been thinking abt a fully fleshed out mercenary au since i posted that oneshot for sixth day of christmas so.... heres a drabble

jimmy and martyn are, ofc, human mercenaries who call themselves the big dogs so they can seem scarier than they really are. theyre mostly homeless theres a rumour abt a witch who lives in the woods and everyone thinks its lizzie but when they show up shes like "oh no thats scar!" and points to her very eccentric and flamboyant neighbor who lives across the river. scar looks NOTHING like a witch but when you go in, you come back out with exactly the potion you wanted, several others you didnt actually need, significanctly less money than what you went in with, and absolutely no memory of actually being inside and making the purchase. hes incredibly suspicious but godDAMN do his potions and crystals work well skizz owns a building plaza named the heart foundation where he rents out sections to people for their stores (yk like those buildings that are connected stores?? i really hope this makes sense). tango is his assistant as well as bigb but bigb is super weird and disappears a lot. tango was the one to suggest the coffee shop idea that martyn overheard. skizz is an angel and tango is an imp lizzie and scar own one of the spaces where they sell very normal things like farm produce and things that would usually be hard for the other members of the community to get like amethyst and food enchanted with elven magic. as well as very specific bones lizzie has found (no, she will NOT tell you where she got them, yes they are organic, she declines to answer if they are ethically sourced). scar is an elf which is why he's able to sell elven enchanted food. the roomies own one of the store spaces and mostly sell wool products but theyve started farming cotton in hopes of expanding their market. they live together on a farm with a fence covered in vines surrounding it so the animals can wander about sometimes. since they sell wool products, they have a lot of sheep, so when they need the sheep back in their pen they hire mercenaries to do it for them. cleo is the only zombie in the community and, while grian was mentioned as an avian in the oneshot, hes actually going to be a fae. everyone thinks etho is a human but he barely leaves home so cleo and grian are the only ones who know for sure whether or not he is gem is the girl who just moved in with the dream of starting a band. she ends up with an imp and an angel both named scott and they call themselves gem and the scotts. they rent one of skizz's spaces for a studio and gem lives in the apartment above it. impulse, scott the imp, lives in a cave, and scott the angel lives in a cottage on the edge of the woods (so not as far in as lizzie and scar) the mounders live in 4 big old creepy houses that look completely different on the inside than they do outside. its also a 'gated' community but they dont care enough to enforce it. mumbo and pearl are both vampires, bdubs is a fae, and joel is an elf. ren is also around to add more people to their little community even tho this uses the alliances made in secret life. he lives in a smaller house a little ways away from scott's cottage. he seems human enough but theres a rumor that he's a werewolf. no one really knows what bigb and lizzie are, scott even introduces them to gem as the 'suspicious weirdos' and cleo and grian joke that not even they know what they are.

Thankfully much less thoughts about these two or else this post would get way too long lmao. I like them but I'm not too insane about them I guess? Etho's very awkward near people he isn't used to which was fun to watch but made their interactions kind of limited for a lot of DL I feel.

Joel's obsession with Etho is hilarious and seeing Bdubs get jealous of his #1 ethogirl status getting challenged is great fun. He's definitely gone through a bit of an arc from "I KILLED ETHO! I KILLED ETHO!!" in Last Life to "Eefo D:< You're making me nervous, eefo D:<" in Double Life to whatever the cow divorce situation was in Limlife. It seems like Etho's otherworldly status has been nerfed in his head and he's much less intimidated by him, while still admiring him in that 'childhood hero' sorta way.

I think because of that I've always seen them a little bit as more of a mentor/prodigy relationship than anything else? Specifically one that Etho is not even aware he's in. Eitherway, I don't really ship them in the romantic sense 🤷‍♂️ etho's just way too aloof and joel's got too much fangirl energy for it to be anything intimate lol

i have watched bdubs and scar and so im gonna talk abt SL again like i did before. obvs spoilers!

i keep my posts pretty meta/only about the game, its mechanics, balance etc so i have no bias on players own actions. but i do want to talk about players and the final moments for a minute here!

obvs i like bdubs a lot and hes been very good at getting to almost the finals in all the series. hope ppl realize that more. if he had more hearts like scar did im sure he could of have gotten further too. etho's ep isnt out but i saw him die in scar's and scar's ep was wild for sure. i mean damn, there was hardly a way etho could have escaped scar when he landed right on top of him, insane. obvs i dont have a view on the others i havent watched but it was interesting to see how they ganged up in this series for the end. scar winning made me happy too, hes a really good player!!

bbut onto the gameplay. i dont wanna repeat myself so im kinda using this as an overall conclusion + specific thoughts about the finale.

its been established clearly that mods assign specific tasks to people at times. and the warden/wither + bogey were not something i enjoyed. this season felt way too "directed" as it went on... and i also think the tasks ability to grant you so much good stuff (a LOT of hearts) is what kept everyone out of being red so easily! which is probably why they did the bogey zombies. which is really just poor balance that no one clearly tested (i recall grian implying before that they dont really test anything but dont quote me on that). maybe a way to have improved that would have been reds were the only ones to gain hearts, and yellow/greens could not. i knew from the start that the heart giving mechanics this season were kind of pointless or overpowered. gifting one heart? really...? that doesnt add up to much of anything in the long run imo unless you manage to get hearts from multiple people. and then on top of that you get hearts back from the secret keeper too. i would have loved if this season was simply "no regen and thats it!" like a sorta UHC deal where you only can heal with specific items (and not 30 hearts prob? bc i understand the tasks were kind of a way to possibly make them die).

on big forced tasks it only made sense with this episode, since everyone is red, so i dont mind that. but again.... they had to force this to happen which is annoying to me. also in terms of balance i really wished they bring back strict rules on enchantments because that also gets frustrating to watch. but perhaps i just like fairness in combat due to watching so much UHC, which also is a death game.

the other issues i had were with reds and red tasks. as pointed out they forced reds in the previous sessions but no one had any time to do red tasks?? and admittedly it was kind of boring bc people couldnt interact about it without failing. but they could not team up properly and i think that is what red life is all about. all the reds coming together because they *need* to face yellows and greens, and hunt people down. but instead the few reds there had to be alone to do their traps, another social issue with this series where tasks often pulled people away from others and left them with videos where they were very alone. there being no space for greens and yellows to exist and get hunted is something i think is great in previous seasons too and it just didnt happen. all that getting forced in that one session just didnt flow well to me.

really even trying to look back at episodes, i cant recall any notable interactions between people i enjoyed minus some brief pauses when they were traveling to do their tasks. there just wasnt a lot of typical socializing! and thats what i didnt like with this series. this plus the balance issues of lives just made this series feel messy, and the length of the episodes due to tasks could be kind of boring if the task was boring or even felt too stressful to force them into places where they could just die (these kinds of dangerous tasks given to greens or yellows felt unfair, as if it was trying to force them to die, and as a viewer i wouldnt want the game make my fave die!).

and as i mentioned in a different post, the lack of fixing some issues in multiple seasons is wild to me. this season faced the same issue as limlife where deaths were not in chat. the episode after, they fixed it (still with some bugs). and then it happened again last session.... and they didnt fix it! this is also annoying bc people dont react to the deaths at all which you kind of wanna see you know? actually im not even sure why they still did it this way. i imagined the clock running out made it more complicated for the system of fying to work. but why this season....? seemed like pretty forward deaths. idk the tech side, but they had 3 solid lives like all the other season, and there were never issues with the death messages happening at all.

but anyways. theres multiple parts of this i mentioned above that just made this gimmick feel so messy and unbalanced, and sometimes not super interesting to watch. it was way too complicated some times. i know theyll likely never do a repeat of the old versions but man idk if i cant find myself liking future seasons if they start stacking so much on top of what is a simple concept. it has started to feel like the three lives havent mattered at all/arent really the focus-- the anxiety of having three times. and the stakes become less and less due to some of these new gimmicks (the ability to gain lives in so many easy ways- limlife and secret life- is why imo) makes death feel less of a problem especially when we know how buddy buddy everyone is now. people need to be limited like before, and be more anxious. 3L, LL, and DL had people quickly establishing their friends bc they knew right from the get go that the series really depended on them being alive and nothing else. the only focus was to stay alive and not die. DL was where ppl kinda chilled a bit on alliances bc they knew each other more but, death was still right around the door with health being tied, it still brought a similar kind of anxiety for players.

i do hope people like grian can recognize these issues behind the scenes bc genuine critique for this series/season is important. like i hope they dont brush off the fact "hall monitors" were an issue-- they can ignore them openly in their videos.... but there is a reason why its a problem that started at all. the concept was way too subjective and hard to judge! so id hate for them to decide "eh, lets not listen to them, im gonna keep doing this and not consider the issue for a new season" right? and hour long episodes? thats crazy, and i dont think it was good for a lot of cc imo, because it made me way less likely to watch or even finish others' episodes. i hope that makes sense... stakes need to be raised, and i think limlife still achieved that to some degree because time was still very sensitive and risky to take. but then SL comes in bringing way too many things that keep them alive far too easily, leaving very little concern as long as they got their task in.

and last thing is from the outside pov i get concerned about this season happening only 6 months after the last one. because that would very very easily cause a burn out/inability to make more gimmicks real quick. i find this particularly odd bc this season too place through multiple holidays...! not sure if they thought this one through very well. considering how much limlife changed things in a way that was a bit more complicated, and then have SL with even more going on.... id just be worried about how much new stuff would even be made after this.

before this season started i was thinking to myself that i would be fine if this was the last one (it was speculation off some posting 3L compilations that was being me think itd be 'over' bc that was the first season). and truly i would be fine if they stopped forever for for a long time. i dont want to start disliking this series if they keep going in this direction... i will ALWAYS enjoy seeing these people play together and it will no doubt keep me watching but, i would hope that i will enjoy what they do for the next seasons and not fall down this path of convoluted, unbalanced and complicated concepts.

⭐️ do you think of the life series as separate from hc/empires, or connected?

🏜️ETHUBS THE MOST FUCKED UP WEIRDOS IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD. MY BELOVED. MY BELOATHED. every moment somewhere in a darkened movie theater inside my mind this video is playing. watching the "he loves me" moment for the first time I think altered my brain chemistry irrevocably [it is also what made me start watching etho. and Here We Are.] since that's a pretty obvious answer though I will say a duo I don't really post about that much but am moderate-to-severely obsessed with is joel and jimmy. every interaction of theirs they will make the dumbest fucking jokes you have ever heard and then try to kill each other looneytunes style and THEN accidentally or intentionally say the most insane innuendo you have ever heard in your life . whenever the two of them are within 50 blocks of each other you bet your ass I am sitting there rubbing my gleeful little hands together

🔥ohh baby I would pick one specific, really really really stupid thing to get sooooo fucking particular about. like. an item (but it has to be useless + dumb. a la diamond hoe) or a pet (but only one named. like. Fungus). a build (must be ugly fortunately this is not difficult for me). at first as a bit but by ep 7 there's a whole narrative arc and I have lost at least one life directly as a result. I say this because this is how I play on smps, where me and my best friend inevitably make up the stupidest fucking lore in the world and get so into it (while every other member of the smp is like. building enderman farms). [on the smp we made during covid I named myself the Food and Drug Administration and eventually got exiled from the country (after a duel in which I died. badly) because I kept burning down their chicken farms for violating FDA standards. and then went on a journey to a far off land to build my own ethical farms but found that violence followed me inevitably. and even when I returned my home was unrecognizable to me . that typa shit]

⭐️hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I surprisingly haven't thought about it that much myself? but I love seeing other ppl's theories on this (I wish I could find that one post abt double life being grian inviting everyone to his insane manwhore summer and them all being like Ya Whatever it's so good). I suppose I do think of them as connected as in taking place in the same universe - e.g. during a life series, the hc server feels empty to the ppl left behind. and then all their friends come back months later with new scars and/or hickeys like hiiii :) sorry I had an errand).

that said I also sort of think of the life server as existing outside the bounds of normal life for them. sort of a "what happens in a life smp stays in a life smp" scenario. whether that's just kind of a tacit social acknowledgement [funny as hell] or a more direct amnesia based thing [ohg. the Implications]

so like the mechanisms are a band but they all have characters that they play and have lore and tell stories (theyre immortal space pirates who roam stars in the starship aurora having fun violence and more violence etc etc) GHSJHKFSH im not gonna ramble abt them anymore lol @lucky-sevens is a very good resource for all things mechs + check out lyric vids of their songs on here + their official site

SO BASICALLY, mumbo right? i know i said hed be nastya and he does share some stuff w her but then ppl reminded me of who would be aurora and what of nastyas backstory and i realized tango would be a better fit for those details of nastya so (ex princess tango + starship impulse !!! zed is the ships doctor btw n his mechanism is his brain) i decided to mix n match stuff from different characters n change whatevers, so now about mumbo:

his mechanism is his blood ! which is replaced with redstone :] this makes him radioactive, and also glow red. hes also like, a powered redstone circuit or w/e they are, and can power things by touching them/being near them even. i think redstone would be terrible for circulation but also that i think redstone itself would be pretty hot, being radioactive and all (especially powered redstone)

the coat + gloves etc are for hiding the glow (and also maybe some of the radiation??? i cant imagine that would be very good for normal people), and the scarf is for his head when he goes out n such

the mustache is fake. yeah. mumbo got meched young and did not get a mustache u_u

i think theyd have a backstory kinda like ashes, mumbo worked for the governemnt as a scientist/weapons expert but double crossed them for the rebellion or smth and got assassinated/sabotaged via lab safety violations

im kinda thinkin if ill keep the original number of 9 mechanisms or if ill add more hermits, i want other mcyts to be album characters and such, with one smp focused on one album maybe, but i dont know if i wanna add hermits as albums characs or as more mechs. maybe them as non-mechs immortals? like king cole or lyf or briar etc. thoughts on etho as carmilla tho?

btw i read everthin ppl say on my posts!!!!! i love all of ur hermitmechs ideas !!!!!!!! im grateful for each and everyone even the keysmashes u_u <3 all three characters in this au so far is now tagged under #hermitmechs!

TLDR Bdubs is a  KNIGHT OF TIME and Etho a MAGE OF BREATH

I tend to ramble so explanations will be UNDER THE CUT

I wrote a lot of this beforehand in notes and to ppl on priv but to preface I use @//dahniwitchoflight ‘s posts when classpecting - good read recommend checking them out if you’re interested!

[ BDUBS : Knight of Space ] Ok so I like firstly rly wanted Bdubs to be a Time player (obvious clock reasons) but truthfully Space is rly HIS aspect as it is often associated with ‘the bigger picture’, objects and creativity -- art.

“Bdubs isn’t a builder, he’s an artist.” - Scar talking about Bdubs’ and his builds and he was sooo right for that. Not just by his builds either but like,,, dude have you SEEN when he draws? When he paints??? Inspirational one of my favourite environmental artists period. This summary by Dahni I think explains him quite well:

“This makes it so Space is grand and can look at things at a higher perspective than others. It is run much more by a strong sense of intuition, and inner knowing of how things are meant to be, without being able to express the specifics in clear detail. They paint things with broad strokes and without clear lines between differences. Considering each difference to actually be a subtle variation of the same thing. Space is also very grounded in the present, very focused on the here and now, and can seem very unconcerned with the future consequences of any decisions they may or may not make. Instead relying on their inner understanding that things are happening the way they are meant to happen and even if small details are different, the larger expression of the idea remains the same.”

That thing about being grounded in the present fits him so well too applying to how he plays in the Life Series. Often in situations where he has to think fast, improvise, unless instigated by someone he trusts, he can form strong alliances but he can break them just as easily. The present and hence what’s happening In The Moment matters to him a lot.

I gave him the KNIGHT class by definition, his role is to “Use his aspect to do [goal] and exploit Space” , using the land to make something useful and something pretty. Especially evident in the Life Series, using the land he’s given and with what he can grab hold of, he tactically crafts them in a way that both looks and has (defensive) purpose: >3L! The Crastle in general, unless broken in forcibly, defensively it is indestructible and (from what I remember) was one of the only landmarks in 3rd Life to survive in one piece. She was perfect u_u,,, >LL! Ice Fort I could go on abt the the ethubs symbolism in the materials they pick- but the fort is built in a way that is used to hinder the movement of enemies (soul sand floors, snowy walls)  whilst putting them on a physical high ground advantage. >DL! Mid Century Modern House. While from appearance the most harmless-looking of bases from an outside it’s probably one of the most sustainable. Easy access to crops, livestock, horseys, to even an easy escape route/panic room when things get worse. Not to mention it was the only base that survived the Boat Boy’s wrath (but maybe that was cuz those couples were close but i digress) All these builds and his builds in all his series are just very pretty! This trait is also very prevalent in his redstone :]

I also read that Knights of Space are like “jacks of all trades” - He’s very skilled at a lot of stuff and Knight of Space made me think of him ^u^!!

[ ETHO : Mage of Breath ] Tbh not AS certain for his classpect but so far I interpret him as very free-spirited, he kinda gets to do what he wants- he’s also very flexible and adaptive without needing to necessarily change himself for anyone in compare to the Mind aspect that deals with switching between roles/masks to fit a situation. Like,,, in the life series he doesn’t Need to adopt a persona or roleplay a role to be interesting when him being himself is entertaining enough etc etc (?) BUT the mind aspect for its sense of balance and rational thinking fits him also -- I just like him as a Breath player :>

Instead focused the logic component of Etho for this analysis comes from his mage class “One who knows/with Breath” by experiencing their aspect-freedom. Etho as a mage of breath I’d constantly on the move whether willingly or by force.

“They know every loophole and twist and turn and can navigate their way around even unfamiliar territory. For some reason I could see a Mage of Breath being very good at parkour type activities. They’ve been forcibly moved around, had their roots torn up more than once, so they’ve learned to quickly settle into strange places or pack up shop and get out without a trace as they need.” “They understand how to give themselves more options in almost any situation, how to place any odds in their favor as needed. They can weasel out of anything.“

To me explains his play style in the life series quite well, especially with the tactical makeshift alliances etc. 

Also I read somewhere knights unconsciously gravitate towards knowing classes like mages and I find that very fitting :]

Maybe I’ll expand on these one day - im sure theres like hundreds of evidence that could support these from other serieses they’ve done/been a part of. But for now using the life series and pieces of hermitcraft acts as a good starter point when psyche and The Social Game in those serves as a great source when thinking about stuff like this!
