Sunless Lives Part 17: I Can’t Do This

They moved northward, towards shorter days and longer nights. They settled in Boston, blending into the city with new names: Mark Brown and Samuel Miller. Under Simon’s instruction Matthew ditched the car and found them fake IDs, prepaid cell phones, a landlord and jobs that dealt in cash and didn’t ask questions, and new looks. Simon grew his hair out into a curly mop that Matthew liked to comb his fingers through and pull on, while Matthew buzzed his. As autumn set in Simon finally retired his button-down uniform for soft henleys and turtlenecks. 

Matthew wasn’t thrilled about Simon wanting a job, but Simon demanded an income of his own, independent from Matthew’s. He was getting good at demanding things from the vampire - and getting them. Matthew found a night shift at a warehouse, while Simon picked up whatever odd hours he could at a corner store - once he’d gotten his agoraphobia under control. That had started with evening walks, just the two of them, where Simon still clung to Matthew’s arm the whole time and shut his eyes when they passed through a dense crowd or under an imposing building. Then, when the changing seasons brought rainy days, they started doing all the things Simon wanted to do. His agoraphobia slowly became easier to manage as they went to museums, and restaurants, and yes, an arboretum. Simon reveled in sheer delight at these things, dragging Matthew by the hand from painting to painting, or huddling together under an umbrella, staring in awe at the colorful trees. It made Matthew feel… something. Satisfaction at taking good care of his pet, he told himself.

Two months in Matthew surprised Simon by taking him to a Brazilian restaurant to celebrate his birthday, and it made Simon cry. It wasn’t his mother’s cooking, but it was close enough. Seeing Simon cry almost made Matthew punch a waiter. They got free brigadeiros.

They spent quality time at home, as well. Simon had some inane little show he liked to watch where the hosts chattered about celebrity fashion and kitchen appliances. It made Matthew want to peel his skin off but he sat dutifully on the couch next to Simon with an arm around the human’s shoulders, providing the domestic illusion that Simon needed.

In exchange, he got another type of quality time.

The strangest thing that Matthew found was that Simon talked to him in a way he had never talked to Matthew when he was human. He talked about his parents, and how little he remembered them. That after they died, thinking about them was too painful, so he never did it, causing his memories of them to degrade into scraps. He talked about his relationship with Isles, and how they’d never even had sex. How once he started working at the VIU, and met other people, he realized he did want sex - just not with Isles. He expounded on his various VIU hookups: coordinator Green. James from HR. Hailey in the mailroom.

Eventually, he talked about the vampires he was sold to.

It started slow. He’d pull Matthew into a cave under the covers late in the day in their tiny studio apartment, hold his hands and whisper to him in the dark. He used simple language and skimmed over the details, but still admitted the worst parts. Lara showed up in glimpses and sidenotes, but was never the main character.

Matthew got the picture.

He talked about Edward Finch first.

Edward liked Simon set up in a particular way before he arrived: flat on his back, with his wrists tied to the bedposts, and fully prepared for anal sex by Lara, with a toy left in. He lay on black sheets - for white, clients had to pay extra. A plastic liner crinkled underneath him. Most vampires like to feed during sex, but Ed preferred to feed before, leaving Simon dizzy and malleable under his hands when he pushed Simon’s legs up to pull out the toy and fuck him. He didn’t expect Simon to enjoy it either - some did - so Simon was free to let his mind escape, to distract himself with other things. Usually he’d pull on the restraints, forcing the rope to dig into his wrist, and he could focus on the pain, the pain there, and not… anywhere else. All in all, Finch wasn’t the worst client at first, not by a long shot.

He started cutting Simon on their fourth session.

Every time Ed arrived, he would undress very neatly, folding his clothes and setting them aside. This process included taking out two pens from the inside of his jacket and lining them up on the bedside table. There they would remain until he got dressed again and they returned to his pocket. This was the pattern until his fourth visit when he let Simon’s legs fall and leaned over him, sweaty and breathing hard - but not satisfied yet.

“We still have some time left - you’ll be a good boy for me a little longer, won’t you Simon?”

“Yes sir,” Simon breathed. That was what he’d been taught to say - to everything and anything. His eyelids were heavy from the blood loss but he forced himself to pay attention as Edward plucked up one of his pens and uncapped it, revealing a small scalpel instead of a ballpoint. Simon’s eyes widened at this, and he lifted his head off the mattress.

“What are you doing?”

In lieu of an answer, Ed set the blade lightly into Simon’s skin just under his pec, and drew it downwards over his ribs.

“Stop, stopstopstop!” Simon yelled, “You can’t do that! Lara!” He turned his face up to the corner of the ceiling where a camera stared down, always watching. This wasn’t supposed to happen; at this point in time, Simon was letting the vampires fuck him and feed from him, and that was it. This was an entirely new pain and humiliation that Simon was utterly unprepared for.

“I already cleared this with Lara,” Edward smiled, “As long as I don't scar you, or touch your face, I’m free to do as I please.” He wasn’t watching the knife in his hand, or the seeping blood; instead he studied Simon’s face, drinking in every ounce of fear and pain.

“No,” Simon shook his head in panicked disbelief, “She wouldn’t do that - No, please, stop-!”

Ed laughed as he made another thin line parallel to the first.

“Do you see the lights flickering?” he asked, referencing Lara’s way of communicating with her clients.

Simon whimpered and struggled, but his wrists were tied securely and Edward sat heavy on his thighs.

“Please don’t do this,” he begged, “I’ve been good, I’ve been good for you, please, ah!”

Another line, crossing the first two.

Lara made fun of him for crying afterwards.

“That was like, soooo vanilla,” she laughed as she rode him, “I can’t believe you were such a baby.”

Feverish from a synthetic blood transfusion and desperate for her care and approval, Simon could only grip her thighs and apologize, apologize, apologize.

Finch got worse, eventually. Sim wasn’t sure when - he’d given up keeping track of the time, given up on keeping track of how many clients he had, how long he’d been with Lara, or when his birthday was. He was drunk most of the time and Lara billed him as an ‘enthusiastic whore’ because he was good at acting. Good at saying the right things, good at making the right noises. Good at being hurt. Good at crying.

But when Edward suddenly dug deep and cut through skin and fat and muscle and scraped bone, Simon couldn’t scream in a pretty way anymore - which was exactly what Ed wanted. He laughed as the blood pulsed out and spilled onto the black sheets.

“I’ve been trying to recapture the feeling of that first cut for ages!” Edward informed Simon excitedly, as if he would care. “Finally…”

He dug in again and Simon shrieked.

“Stop! That’s too much, please, I can’t do this!”

“Exactly!” Edward grinned with ferocious delight. The lights flickered, from dim to bright and back, but he ignored it. He continued gouging into Simon’s chest, reveling in Simon’s screams and pleading.

But it wasn’t long before Simon gave up. Flopped back in helpless exhaustion, and let his body respond however it needed to, with groans and spasms; he wasn’t begging anymore. He knew it was useless.

“No, goddamnit!” Edward shouted at him and slapped his face, “You’re supposed to…” He paused, chest heaving and brow furrowed. He had an idea. He dropped the bloody scalpel back on the bedside table and picked up the real pen. Then he twisted his fingers in Simon’s hair and pulled his head up, forcing him to look at his mutilated torso.

“Watch this.” He poised the pen at an angle above one of the cuts. “Watch me.” And he pushed the pen into the incision, and then sideways, using brute force to push the pen under Simon’s skin. A truly agonizing scream ripped out of Simon as he watched a lump grow under his skin as Edward drove the pen in further, separating layers of skin and setting nerves on fire. Simon felt like his eyes might pop out of his head from how wide with terror they were, watching the pen invade his body. Half an inch. One inch. He struggled like a madman against the restraints, and the ropes cut deep into his wrists.

“What do you think of that, huh?!” Edward crowed.

“STOP!” Simon screamed, “Please stop - Aaah!” Another half inch. Two inches.

The door to the bedroom burst open and Lara’s enforcers charged in - two massive vampires that Lara provided with drawn blood and plenty of cash in exchange for their services, though they weren’t allowed to touch Simon themselves. They grabbed Edward by the arms and dragged him off the bed, pinning him to the floor. Lara stepped into the room, looming over the naked Finch.

“You’re a weak loner nobody and you broke your contract,” she hissed, “Tell me why I shouldn’t kill you right here.”

Simon lay back and shut his eyes, shedding silent tears of relief. Lara was here. He was safe.

Edward was completely unphased.

“I can pay you triple.”

“Bullshit.”

“Check my wallet.”

Lara rifled through his clothes, and found a wallet stuffed with cash. She counted it slowly, mulling over her options. Then she turned back to Edward, tossing her hair.

“You’ll sign a new contract. No knives, or weapons of any kind anymore.”

No, Simon thought, He can’t come back, that was almost as bad as - as bad as -

“Deal.”

“See him out!” she said to her goons, and threw Finch’s clothes out the door. They dragged the vampire away. Lara turned her attention on Simon, falling upon him and peppering his tear-soaked face with light kisses, banishing his insubordinate thoughts.

“I’m so sorry baby, that shouldn’t have happened, you won’t see him for a while, okay? Let’s get you out of these…” She untied his wrists from the bedposts. His hands moved to hover over the pen, still embedded under his skin, afraid to touch it. All his injuries pulsed and burned, but the pen was a white-hot knot of pain sending waves of chills over his body.

“Please,” he whimpered, “Please, help…” 

Her nose wrinkled.

“I’m not touching that.”

“Why are you telling me this?” Matthew eventually asked, after a few of these stories.

“Because I know you won’t judge me,” Simon answered easily, “And I know it won’t hurt you to hear like it would’ve… before.”

“Maybe I shouldn’t say this,” Matthew said as he massaged Simon’s hand between his own, “But I like hearing about what they did to you. It tells me exactly who to rip to shreds when I see them. And it makes me glad that I own you now.” And one thing he definitely wouldn’t say is that he found it to be a massive turn-on.

Simon smiled in the dark, squeezing out a tear.

“You don’t own me, we’re a team,” he chided.

“You keep telling yourself that.” Matthew shifted forwards to kiss him.

Simon laughed against Matthew’s lips, thinking it was a joke.

Or maybe hoping.

BigLaw firm concluded partner's email to Black associate wasn't racist because 'he treated other people terribly too,' suit alleges

Complaints about discriminatory conduct at Troutman Pepper Hamilton Sanders “were often ignored, and, when they were not, met with gaslighting, apathy or swift retaliation,” according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday by a fired Black female associate.

The suit by former associate Gita F. Sankano says she was fired after complaining about an “outrageously demeaning, dehumanizing and demoralizing” August 2023 email from partner Matthew Bowsher, who insulted her cognitive ability. The email was “unfortunately characteristic of his behavior towards her and other Black women at the firm,” the suit says.

Bowsher is not named as a defendant in the Jan. 17 suit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Sankano is represented by the Wigdor law firm, according to a Jan. 17 press release.

Troutman Pepper took 77 days to investigate the email after Sankano’s complaint.

“It came as no surprise when, on Oct. 27, 2023, the firm concluded that Mr. Bowsher had not engaged in discrimination because he treated other people terribly too,” the suit says.

Sankano was fired a couple of weeks after the conclusion of the investigation, purportedly based on performance, but this was a “preposterous explanation,” the suit says. Sankano “received above-average performance reviews each and every review cycle, including in the performance review she received at the time of her termination.”

The Black associate for whom Sankano did at least 80% of her work was not even consulted or informed about Sankano’s firing, according to the suit.

Bowsher told the ABA Journal in an email that he has “barely had a chance to review” Sankano’s suit after receiving it Wednesday morning.

“I’m still in shock from her allegations, still processing them,” he says. “Her complaint has so many falsehoods, so many blatant omissions, it’s truly unbelievable how someone can paint a picture to skew so far from reality, devoid of context and willfully blind to a host of facts which, if shown, would paint an entirely different picture.”

Michael Willemin, a lawyer for Sankano, responded to Bowsher’s statement in an email to the Journal.

“It is unfortunate but not surprising that Mr. Bowsher is incapable of introspection and an honest self-assessment of his behavior. Nothing was taken out of context. As alleged, multiple Black women at the firm have found him to be discriminatory. We included his entire email in the complaint—the reader can judge,” Willemin said.

The suit claims that Bowsher often “belittled” Sankano, even before he sent the email. He also gave Sankano a negative review, the only one that she received, the suit says. No action was taken to correct his behavior, according to the suit.

The email that led to Sankano’s complaint with HR had criticized Sankano for telling the administration department that it had mistakenly identified Bowsher as the “matter responsible attorney” on two deals. In reality, there was to be a 70/30 split between Bowsher and a senior associate. Sankano told the administration department that there was another “matter responsible attorney” and attached a clip mentioning the 70/30 split.

Bowsher’s email to Sankano said “anyone reading” her sentence would interpret it to mean that she wanted the administration department to make the other attorney 100% matter responsible.

“This is very basic, elementary communication,” Bowsher wrote. “This has nothing to do with training, or understanding of multifamily transactional law, this is daily required functioning. You expressed interest in receiving my input/feedback in real time as to your performance, so I am taking 20 minutes out of my morning right now to explain to you, in very clear objective detailed analysis, that when I see something like this, where it is so undeniably evident that you’ve made an obvious and surprising error, and you’re saying you still don’t see the error even after I’ve taken the time to point it out to you, and you’re still saying you’ve done nothing wrong … I really just don’t know what more I can say here. If you don’t even see the problem, I’m not sure how you’ll fix it, but it’s definitely something you need to fix, because if you had this same type of miscommunication with a client or borrower’s counsel rather than with our internal administrative team, I would have to drop everything and get on the phone immediately to do serious damage control, reassuring them that the deal is actually in capable hands. Bottom line: this is not something I would expect from a fourth-year associate.”

Sankano is a 2018 cum laude graduate of the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. After clerking for a state appeals court judge, she was hired at Pepper Hamilton in 2019. The firm became Troutman Pepper Hamilton Sanders as a result of a merger.

The suit describes Sankano as an “incredible asset” to the firm but said she was “set up to fail” after her hiring because her billable hours were “micromanaged.” Sankano was required to email her hours to her supervisor, rather than directly enter them into the system like others in the office. Sankano was the only Black attorney in the Pepper Hamilton D.C. office at the time.

The supervisor said Sankano’s hours didn’t matter because she charged a flat fee to clients. In reality, the suit says, the partner was making herself look more profitable by reducing Sankano’s hours. Sankano eventually transferred to another practice group.

Diane C. Iselin, director of communications at Troutman Pepper, provided this statement to the Journal: “Ms. Sankano’s employment was terminated for legitimate, nondiscriminatory reasons based solely on her performance. We will defend ourselves vigorously in this case.”

Avicia sighed as she stared around the empty apartment, hands on her hip and a critical look in her eye. Armed with a magic eraser and a shopping bag, she cleaned up scuffs and picked up the stray bits of trash. It was strange to think that three months ago, she was sitting in her apartment, fretting over the premiere.

It didn’t take long for the concept of ‘living together’ to crop up between herself and Kahdreg. To be fair, she didn’t really leave Kahdreg’s apartment after they’d reunited. It made sense to move in together. Finding a suitable place to live - especially one with enough closet space for Kahdreg, Avicia, Bellamy, and Kay - had been another headache, though. One which Avicia was happy to not relive.

A soft knocking caught Avicia’s ear as she finished making a round in Kahdreg’s living room. “Coming!”

Placing the eraser and trash bag on the floor, Avicia padded to the front door and flung it open. She was expecting the person on the other side.

What she wasn’t expecting was how average they’d look.

Kallinaera Virlee, dressed in fraying jeans and a tee-shirt and hoodie, her dark blue hair pulled back into a simple ponytail. She didn’t even wear make-up, except foundation. It seemed, without her expensive products, her hair had lost a little luster and she was breaking out a little. Of course, perhaps that was a manifestation of the stress she was under. From what Avicia had heard through the Follywood grapevine, the Virlees had not been kind to Kalli.

But, Avicia had to admit even when the siren was dressed grungy, there was some damnable grace and elegance to her.

At the very least, the siren had the sense to look awkward when Avicia opened the door. “Is Kahdreg here?”

“Afraid not, Miss Virlee. I’m doing the handoff,” Avicia replied with a professional smile. She motioned to the large box, sitting a little bit in the living room. “Feel free to double-check everything’s in there.”

“Understandable,” mumbled Kallinaera woodenly as she headed toward the box. Crouching down and opening the flaps, the siren’s expression creased. Though her eyes looked over the items, Avicia doubted she registered them. For some reason, Avicia felt as if Kallinaera were lost. Before Avicia could dwell on the curious thought, the siren asked, “So, um, the apartment’s pretty empty.”

“We moved recently.” Avicia continued to smile, but she couldn’t keep an edge from her voice.

“We?” Kallinaera’s eyebrows furrowed, clearly not able to put two and two together.

“Kahdreg and I,” Avicia explained, slowly and pointedly.

“Oh, right, right,” Kallinaera mumbled, shaking her head as she grabbed the box. Once she stood straight and hefted her belongings up, the siren eyed Avicia quietly. Avicia waited, raising her eyebrows expectantly. “Avicia, can I say something?”

The usage of her correct name threw Avicia for a second. All the same, she narrowed her eyes and gave a one-shouldered shrug. “It’s a free country.”

“You ruined my life.” The words shot from Kallinaera’s mouth, not exactly heated with rage. As if realizing how what she said sounded, the siren verbally fumbled. “I mean… I know I made a lot of choices that ruined my own life, but you were the catalyst of it.”

Avicia crossed her arms, her expression unimpressed.

“And I’m saying this to blame you or guilt trip you. Just…” Kallinaera continued to bumble through whatever soliloquy she had planned. Her grip on the box adjusted and readjusted. “A lot has happened and I’m trying to understand. It’s… still a struggle.”

With an acknowledging hum, Avicia nodded. She and Kahdreg had discussed Kallinaera at great length over the months back together. After the fiasco at Dead Ringer’s premiere, the Virlees thought it best Kallinaera keep her head low and distance herself. Which resulted in no job, no income, no nepotism, and who knew what else.

As Kallinaera took a hefty sigh, setting the box down, Avicia could tell the siren was adjusting to a new way of living. In many ways than simply physical.

“I’m sorry for making Kahdreg feel like there was no other choice than to be with me. And I’m sorry for what I did to you. All of it.” Kallinaera clumsily motioned with her hands, but her eyebrows remained furrowed. Some cloudy resentment - not aimed at Avicia or Kahdreg - seeped into Kalli’s tone. “And I don't know if my pushing you on the yacht was intentional or not. Which sounds asinine, I know, you don’t have to believe me. I just…”

Another heavy sigh released from Kallinaera as she retrieved the box again.

“I’m confronting a lot internally and trying to live on my own and it’s hard.” At this point, the siren was speaking quickly, her face flushing a darker shade. She wanted to retreat. Still fumbling with the box, Kallinaera headed for the door, her shoulders a little hunched. “So, yeah. Thank you for my stuff and, um, I hope you and Kahdreg have a good life.”

Avicia followed behind Kallinaera, lips pursed as she fought the urge to say something or allow the siren a quiet escape. Part of Avicia had her own things to say, however.

“I acknowledge your apology, but don’t accept it, Kallinaera.” Avicia’s words made the siren pause, almost over the threshold and almost to freedom. Kalli half-turned to look at Avicia, her expression a flimsy mask. Leaning against the wall, Avicia crossed her arms and settled a stern look on Kalli’s face. “Kahdreg believes you can be a better person. I hope they’re right.”

In that moment, something in the air changed. Something other than stiff awkwardness surrounded the siren. Avicia wasn’t charitable enough to call it hope or relaxation. Maybe relief.

Kallinaera gave a stiff nod and offered a weak smile, before turning and leaving, lugging the heavy box alone. A few moments after Avicia closed the door, Kahdreg popped their head out from their bedroom. “Is she gone?”

Once Avicia gave the thumbs up, Kahdreg heaved a sigh and padded from the bedroom. “Sorry, for making you do that.”

“Eh, it wasn’t so bad.” Avicia shrugged and placed the used magic eraser into the trash bag. Glancing up at Kahdreg, sensing their unspoken question, she added, “Can’t say she’s doing great, but I think she doing better.”

Another strange relief fluttered through Kahdreg. They knew Kallinaera wasn’t doing very well, even since the premiere, but knowing she wasn’t absolutely devastated helped. And Aviica knew what their concerns were, so she knew what Kahdreg had been worried about. “Good.”

“Well, I think we’re done here,” Avicia said from across the room, after tying up the garbage bag and taking one more look around. They had moved most everything the weekend prior. The only reason they were here was to give Kalli her things. Neither wanted the siren to know their new address, if only for a completely fresh start.

Hefting the garbage bag, Avicia glared up at Kahdreg, trying to ignore her blush. “It’s a thing people do!”

“I know,” Kahdreg replied with unnerving agreeance. Avicia stepped into the hallway, narrowing her eyes as she waited for the infuriating end to Kahdreg’s words. The orc didn’t disappoint, as they locked their former apartment’s door they added, “Odd food combinations are a thing all pregnant people do.”

The sound Avicia made was a cross between a snarl and a growl, which only served to make Kahdreg’s grin broaden. Unable to fight against the orc’s unfounded claim, Avicia relied on her go-to gimmick as she savagely shoved the garbage bag down the trash chute.. “If this harassment continues, Mr. Vidaroc, I’m taking it up with HR!”

That only made Kahdreg laugh harder, as they shifted the bags to one hand and scooped Avicia up in their free arm. She wiggled in their grip, offering up weak protestations before devolving into laughter herself.

Together, Avicia and Kahdreg left behind the old and ventured home.
