♙ ⸻ · 。… [ natalie dormer + 35 + cis female + she/her ] the city of new york welcomes agnes seymour to the social season of 1887, the fiancée of alistair arundel. known to be sophisticated and shrewd, their rumored self-important and temporal tendencies might prove to be their unmaking. the street musicians often string along a tune that sounds like red wine supernova by chappell roan whenever they are near, hoping for a coin or two as a reward. unbeknown to their peers, agnes views the social season as something akin to circe's eternal exile but when holding a secret such as having been caught in a scandalous affair with another aristocratic lady, resulting in her hasty engagement to a lesser noble and banishment to america , it would be best to keep their opinions to themselves. ⸻ [ xan + 24 + est + n/a ]
basic statistics :
full name : agnes josephine seymour
nicknames or aliases : she was once tenderly called 'aggie' by her father, who is now too old and too scorned to remember her
age : thirty - five
date of birth : 7 january 1852
position : lady seymour, daughter of the duke of somerset
parents : father : edward adolphus seymour, 12th duke of somerset (b. 1804) prev. m. susan margaret seymour, duchess of somerset (b. 1808 d. 1850) mother : jane georgiana seymour, duchess of somerset (b. 1824 d. 1859)
siblings : lady margaret helen seymour (elder half-sister, b. 1831 d. 1850) angus ferdinand seymour, earl of st. maur (twin brother, b. 1852) margery beatrice paulet (née seymour), marchioness of winchester (younger sister, b. 1854) lord edward percy seymour (younger brother, b. 1856) eleanor guendolen kearley (née seymour), viscountess devonport (younger sister, b. 1859)
marital status : betrothed to alistair arundel
sexuality : homosexual
the secret :
he was not the one to discover them, but the duke of somerset could picture the scene. his most favored daughter entangled in lavender sheets, exposed milky skin reddened not with shame but pleasure. he now saw that agnes had played him for a fool. she'd dodged suitors for years, all in the name of the love of a woman. what's worse, he'd been blinded by his favor for her and allowed it. her lover's family threatened to cry scandal; the lady's advantageous engagement now seemed precarious. somerset scrambled to find the nearest man in need of a wife, and offered agnes alongside a thousand pounds. and while alistair arundel was not a british peer, as a rather wealthy member of the gentry it was appropriate enough to not stir too much suspicion. the family's venture to new york city sweetened the deal all the more. had the cost of his intact reputation been worth it? he could not say.
thoughts on high society :
agnes had once reveled in society. the season delighted her with its parties and its drama— she'd happily participate in the former, but never the latter. she delighted in fashion, and wielded her feminine wiles to leave many cards opponents with empty pockets. but such a world was gone now. new york society came with a new hierarchy, one she hadn't been born into, one she hadn't had centuries of ancestors' shoulders to stand upon. she is determined, however, to rise from the ashes. even if that means gritting her teeth and dragging her lead-filled feet down the aisle.
introduction (tw: death //// tldr: gay nepo baby!):
"i am the descendant of edward seymour, first duke of somerset and brother to jane seymour, queen of england, lord protector for his nephew, king edward vi. are you familiar with him— no?" agnes's eyes rolled over them once, unsurprised at their ignorance. "all you need to know is that he reveled in power and influence; and just as quickly do the mighty rise do they fall." the apple does not fall far from the ancestral tree, she thought grimly. "i will not bore you with accounts of my upbringing, as it is nearly identical to my peers. nor do you need to know the logic behind grape scissors or the science of calling cards. the bright spots of my childhood were perhaps my father teaching me to play cards at an age at which i should not have been playing cards...emptying my brother's pocket of sweets at said game of cards...learning to ride horses...and perhaps any time i was with all of my siblings." "you see, the duke and his second wife, my mother, were quite...prolific. let's see: my twin brother and i are the oldest. agnus is the earl of st. maur, and my father's heir." for the first time in this conversation, her voice falters. "then there is margery, now the marchioness of winchester. then edward, who last year was married to the daughter of the 2nd baron methuen. and last, my most dearest, is eleanor, now the newly minted viscountess devonport. you'll notice that all of my siblings are in marriages so advantageous and respectable it is almost vulgar." she almost makes a remark upon her own upcoming nuptials, but as soon as her mouth opens it shuts once more. "shortly before my debut in society, i traveled to the continent with the dowager duchess of northumberland. i and the daughter of a welsh earl were to accompany her travels, and expand our knowledge of art history, architecture, fashion...essentially all of the things well-bred ladies ought to be an expert in. she became my best friend in that short year," agnes said, her breath choking on her memory. she would not allow her countenance to betray her... "a bond made over greek poets, french philosophers, italian wine and dealing with the duchess' snoring is quite an unbreakable one." ...and yet her eyes trembled with longing. "we, of course, kept in touch after. but her father adores the country while i was practically raised in london, so we only ever saw each other during the season." she omitted how in between she'd practically exhausted nearly all of sappho's known fragments in her letters, and sealed each missive with a lavender sprig. "in the years that transpired after my coming out, i was miraculously able to avoid immediate marriage," she continues nonchalantly, taking a sip of her whiskey. she nearly chokes on it at the sound of the scandalized gasp that escapes her counterpart. "indeed, i hold quite controversial opinions about many things, but especially marriage. i cannot elaborate now, for while this is america, i must retain some sense of propriety. admittedly, i also have the privilege of my status in addition to my beautiful — docile — younger sisters who are more than willing to go to the altar and what's more, there's no relentless mama spending her life trying to force me down the aisle. my papa also once believed that no man was a match for me." "but you are now engaged to alastair arundel, are you not?" "an astute observation." she glances across the room at her intended. agnes was sure that she was as perplexing to him as he was to her. while untitled, the arundel's vast wealth rivaled that of any aristocrat. it was rumored that royal norwegian blood flowed through their veins, but officially, they were but landed gentry. he was not unattractive — strictly objectively speaking — and he seemed well-mannered. why had he not yet married? she did not know. she did, however, know this: he would have his secrets, and so would she.
connections :
old money adversaries / new money allies : any newcomer that threatens the delicate ecosystem of new york high society is bound to garner attention, both positive and negative. agnes herself is acquainted with longstanding families, their daughters having been unceremoniously thrown at her brother last season. she's unsure of how they'll react to her fall from grace, the details however obscured. but it's from the newcomers that she finds inspiration, her ambitions renewed.
infatuation : agnes still has not yet moved on from her first love, but she can't deny that someone has caught her eye. usually bold in her actions, her scandalous past has made her timid. very much so_hot_you're_hurting_my_feelings_ by_caroline_polachek.mp3
fellow londoners : hailing from an influential family, agnes knows positively everyone in london town. her opinions of them? likely less than sunny, but who knows?
can u guys tell my brain is fried from writing that mammoth intro lol tbh i'm better at one on one plotting than putting out wanted connections, so hmu <3
#i had this really slay idea to write her intro in first person#i fear i may have slayed too close to the sun#gildedintro#by xan.#(gifs by me lolz)

THAT WAS SO INCREDIBLY HOT. nghhhhhhhhhhhhh. 🥵🥵🥵🥵 i am unwell, fanning myself rn. just wow!!!!!
so cute and fluffy too, great dialogue :D
but the sexytimes??? i am OBSESSED. 😍🥴😳
Hey Maur!
You know, we should all probably stop considering anything on the site "late," since it always feels so damn good when someone stumbles across an old post and loses their goddamn mind over it.
Because THAT is one amazing feeling you've given me today. I'm so glad you found my self-indulgent, smutty fluff, and that you liked it enough to come and let me know. It always means the world to me to hear from anyone who wants to stop by and tell me what they liked. Gives me an opportunity to say "Thank you" and tell you I appreciate it!
Wanna know what we're flailing over?
That'd be Hall Pass (HC RPF x reader) if you're so inclined.

"Ah. Dried blood."
{Gabriel looked down at the ground. Pools of dried blood and unidentified gore piles lined the icy textures of 9-3. He'd assume that the Machine went deeper for fresher blood, as a rational hunter would.}
{Gabe thinks again.}
"But... 9-4? Judecca? All I recall of Judecca is..."
{A vast expanse of freezing ice. Souls, billions strong, inches away from the surface, in however many kilometers across that one wishes to assume. It could very well be infinite. Gabe hadn't recalled any coasts in Judecca.}
{The archangel looked forwards, to the exit. It had also been filled with dried blood - perhaps the Machine needed a pick-me-up before falling further down?}
"Heh... classic Machine. Blood is fuel, and hell is full."
{...a more rational thought crosses Gabriel's mind.}
"..."
{Gabriel steps into the red hall, and looks down the icy cavern once called an elevator. Without much time of his own left, he decides to jump down. See if the Machine is still active.}
[TIME: 9:14.876 | A]
[KILLS: 0 | D]
[STYLE: 10 | D]
[OVERALL RANK: D]
[SECRETS: 0/5]
[CHALLENGE: null]
{Gabriel hadn't seen one of these before. Unusual. Intriguing. He'd like to see what the Machine had scored in the past, if this had been what it seen every time it fell down a new shaft.}
{Only another minute later, Gabriel landed down into the beginning of Judecca. 9-4.}
{Gabriel spied a terminal off to the right of a sloped hall. He walked up to it. Its Tip of the Day read:}
'blood was fuel. hell is empty.'
"...That's quite ominous. Perhaps the Machine had thought otherwise?"
{The terminal hadn't responded. Gabriel deems it fitting to leave the terminal alone, in search for his equal.}
{The doors opened to Judecca: a vast ice ocean, dark and despairing. Bloodied footprints were set into the ground just in front of the archangel.}
"Hmm... perhaps."
{Gabriel followed them.}
{For a very long time.}
{There is nothing but ice. The footsteps are long gone.}
{Gabriel continued further into the end of Hell.}
{Eventually, something new. A Malicious Face stood, staring off into the darkness.}
"A... face? Hello?"
{The Face turned towards Gabriel, sporting a different expression than the stoic fury that its others had worn, moments before being torn down by a bloodlusty robot.}
{It wore an expression of hopelessness.}
"...why are you out in Judecca?"
{It could not respond, even if it wanted to. The Face looked off into the deep dark deathy depths, walking on its tendrils, ever further.}
{Gabriel followed the Face with curiosity.}
{The cold of Treachery stabbed deep into Gabriel's old wounds, panging in his bones. He hadn't felt this sort of pain in a long time. Perhaps this was a long time coming.}
{The Face suddenly jolted forwards. It had spotted something Gabriel could not. Gabriel gave chase, a burning desire building within him.}
{After so long, the Face looked down at a lump in the ice.}
{Gabriel caught up, his wings glowing with ecstasy.}
"Quite the chase you've put up, eh, Maur... oh."
{The Face had found Gabriel's equal, far from the elevator. How long had Gabriel had to go before he fell, too? He hadn't remembered.}
{Gabriel kneeled in front of the Machine. It seemed to be pawing at its Railcannon in a desperate attempt to destroy the ice. The ice of which had concealed souls. Billions strong.}
"A valiant effort, Machine. Too bad it was in vain. I will miss you, for what it's worth..."
{...Gabriel sparked an idea.}
"Blood is fuel for it, however."
{His idea required a subject to endure the mortifying act of bleeding... dying, even. He looks to the Malicious Face.}
{The Malicious Face seems to know what Gabriel desires. It shakes horizontally, knowing that it won't be able to revive the lump in the ground. It would prefer to mourn it, rather than die in a vain attempt to bring it back.}
{Gabriel understands.}
"Why, perhaps? Is it too frozen, the ice too impenetrable? Would it try to kill me? Is it even possible?"
{Too many questions. Not enough time.}
{Gabriel kneels, there. He mourns the loss of what would once be called his equal. There were others, yes... but only the Machine was able to defeat him one on one. Sisyphus needed an army, and he still lost. Minos had considered peace, and yet his efforts were sinful, so he had to fall as well. He hadn't recalled anyone else... maybe someone lost to time.}
{Perhaps an unofficial character. Gabriel's thoughts recede.}
"Maurice. Would you care to sit with me?"
{The Face steps to Gabriel's side, resting its body next to the archangel.}
"Heh... perhaps we may all die in a frozen sort of peace. Er- well, not saying that the Machine died in peace - it seems quite desperate to continue living, as are all mortals. I do not blame it. That would be hypocritical."
"I, however, do not have much time left. You see, Maurice, I have a story to tell, if you'd like to listen."
{The Face turns a couple degrees to Gabriel's direction. It wishes to listen.}
"I was once a well-respected archangel. Everyone who knows of me knows my story. However, one day in Gluttony, this very machine challenged my judgement. Rather pridefully, I had tried to defeat it, and yet... it outlasted me. My loss rung out throughout the heavens, miles above."
"The Council deemed me unworthy of Our Holy Father's Light, and ripped His warmth from my body. I had 24 hours of life to remain an angel, and they sent me away. I was furious. Vengeful."
{Judecca's invisible jaws gnawed at Gabriel and Maurice equally.}
"The Machine had taken my legacy and turned me into a mockery of myself, and I was hateful. It took a while to reach my abode the next time."
"You see, once it had made its way into Heresy, I had decided to taunt it. It seemed to respond to it, only taking about ten minutes to reach my organ practicing room. The Machine and I fought heavily."
"Again, it won. This time however, it won my respect as well."
"It is a worthy foe. It... was a worthy foe, I suppose."
"Seeing as it's... well."
{Dead.}
{Gabriel took the sheathes for Justice and Splendor, and sat the twin swords below the Machine's frozen corpse as a sign of respect.}
{The Face paws at the lump with a tendril.}
{Gabriel can feel his armor welding itself to the ground.}
{The Face can no longer escape.}
"Maurice? How are you feeling, friend?"
{Maurice cannot emote, stuck to the ground.}
"...ah. You're stuck. I understand."
{Gabriel's down to his last seconds.}
"I can feel the end coming. Maurice, are you safe to continue alone?"
{Maurice hugs Gabriel with its tendrils. It's going to miss hanging out with an archangel.}
"...I feel you, homie. Thank you for your company."
{Resting a hand on Maurice's forehead, Gabriel falls silent and still. His light grows dark.}
{Maurice mourns his friends.}
{It's lonely in Judecca. As it's always been.}
{As it always will be.}
{Maurice hopes that, with its last thoughts, someone will tell stories of him.}
{All freezes in Judecca.}

so again obviously this is far from comprehensive but here is my rough guide for converting Old English words (Wiktionary is your friend here, I also utilize this site) into sth that sounds like Rohanese:
(this post will be updated as I iron out my process)
Existing Breakdown:
Lohtûr "Horse-folk" (Rohanese) > Eohmenn (Old English)
eoh > war-horse, poetic use of horse; þēod > people, folk use Mann/Menn instead, þēod implies “nation” while “Menn” implies “folk”
Tudnas “guard” breaks down into tud “to watch, to guard” + nas “people,” which is perhaps a cognate for the Riders, and would imply then that nas aligns with þēod
Tud (verbal) then becomes weardian, meanwhile Thur (noun) is simply weard (Lord in Old English was hlafweard (bread guardian)) > breaks down into Tudnas “[He Who] Guards The People/Nation” and Thuron “Guard of (insert Rohanese word for bread; likely ending in -on).”
However, instead of using weardian, to keep consistency we'll use scildan/sċildend to match the S > D/T alignment created by Smaug. Scildan means both "to protect" and "to shield"
(above implies that Thur should not have an H; this would also align with Tûrac. Possibly closer to ð/Dh than þ/Th when vocalized?)
Tûrac "king"
Neologically, utilizing -ac as a regal suffix (Tûr “people” + -ac “leader(?)”)
This is why I'm not bothering to provide a direct translation into Old English, though I've utilized it in place of "Brego" for Théodred's steed — Brego developed from proto-Germanic breguz (“the first, premier, chief”), which would make sense since Tûr is an existing element in other words
It therefore suggests -ac may be a superlative suffix, making Tûrac translate literally to "best/first of the people"
Tûca “daring” > spearciġ “spunky”
This implies -a is the Rohanese equivalent to modern English -y/Old English -iġ for forming adjectives
(Yes I played fast and loose with this translation don’t @ me. I’m trying to be consistent and ‘spunk’ is a combination of ‘spark’ + ‘funk.’ So there you go.)
Maur “wise” > læred “learned”
Utilizing "læred" instead of the more direct "wis" simply to avoid complications with Rôg/Wose
Kûd “hole” > Hol; dûk “dwell” > setlan “settle”
This implies that -an is an agentive suffix. Dûk "dwell" > Dûkan "dweller"
Kastu "mathom" > heord "herd"
Kastu is interesting because it’s a Rohanese word for Mathom, which is itself a word Tolkien invented, pulled from māþum (treasure, object of value)
I don’t think it makes a ton of sense for the Rohanese word to directly parallel the Hobbit sense of the word; I would argue it should be closer to Feoh, which means both wealth and livestock — an important thing with societal value less directly tangible than money, I.E. either a general term for livestock or more likely a term for either wild herds of horses or Mearas?? Things to consider.
Utilizing heord as it ties in with Feoh's idea of livestock without the dual meaning of the rune-name, and it maintains the H > K pattern
Lôhgrad > Riddermark
While Lôhgrad gets translated to Riddermark, I’d argue that makes little sense as mearc was generally used in the sense of boundary/limit, not land/country/etc.— however, I also think it’s the least clunky way to translate it while still sounding punchy (Ridderlond doesn’t have the same ring to it lol). I’d still propose that “G” actually remains unchanged; “grad” > “græsmolde”/grasslands. So if you’re looking for a more wordy translation, as this is pretty common with place names (and surnames), it would become “Riders’ Grasslands/Plains” instead of “Riders’ Boundary”
Trâgu > Smaug
this has the best direct translation line; thank you Tolkien Gateway for confirming Smaug is an old Norse word meaning “crafty.”
Younger Futhark does not have a D rune, so it’s likely that S could lead to either D or T in Rohanese (which implies an interchangeability between the two letters; this holds consistent with Germanic languages)
Rôg > Wose
another one that makes my life very easy, since Wose is also already a real Middle English word and its first consonant doesn’t change in Old English (wāse). Yay.
Trahan > Smial/burrow
Trahan can be used as a word for Smial but it’s more likely used in Rohanese as an actual burrow, I.E. an animal’s lair.
thankfully, the Anglo-Saxon word smygel does, indeed, mean “burrow”/”place to creep through” which maintains the S > T trend. Fuck yes.
Roughly (Old English > Rohanese):
(H)E > L (only for initial Es)
Th > N
L > M
H(o) > K(û)
S > T/D (Sm > Tr)
G > G
W > R
C > D
Construction Notes:
“oh” sounds generally change to long “u” sounds when following a hard consonant (D, T, G, K, etc.)
Remains “o” following soft consonants (Loho vs Eoh)
“A” sounds seem to be richer when following a soft consonant (I.E. M/N, L, H, Th), for lack of a better term — “æ” (pronounced like the “A” in ash or camp) becomes “au”
“A” remains as æ following G(r), presumably holds true for D/T/etc
 (long A) replaces english “au” following T(r); implies a consistent lengthening following hard consonants
Rohanese possibly adds an “o” to soft consonants at the end of words (h, th); see “Loho” (horse) versus “Lohtûr” (horse-folk)
Adds a“u” following hard consonants? (Trâgu, Kastu)
Adjectival suffix of "-a" (Tûca) — compare to modern English “-y”
Seems to treat “Th” at the start of the word as a hard consonant closer to Eth/”D”
“E” in English tends to lengthen to “A” or “O” in Rohanese, while “O” tends to lengthen to “U” or “Ô.” Due to lack of direct evidence, I've decided I/Y will lengthen to "Â."
Ignoring initial “H” sound in Old English when dealing with (H)eo; treated as E > L
C in Rohanese treated the same as the Anglo-Saxon Cēn rune (pronounced as "ch" before a vowel, or as "k" after)
Utilizing the A-stem neuter Old English plural system
Nominative/Accusative: -u
Genitive: -a
Dative: -um
Word ends in a consonant? Add as a suffix (Tudnas > Tudnasu). Word ends in a vowel? Convert the vowel (Loho > Lohu). If it ends in a “U,” simply lengthen it (Kastu > Kastû).
Agentive suffix of -an (as implied by dûkan; compare to modern English -er/Old English -ere)
Utilizing the Old English possessive suffix -es, converted to "-os" in Rohanese
Could possibly use the Old Norse concrete suffix -oþ, converted as "-un" (used to make concrete nouns from verbs, I.E. "to hunt, huntian" versus "a hunt, huntoþ")
Utilizing Old English diminutive -can, converted as -cen (confirming e as a possible vowel considering “Mearas,” though it seems to be uncommon)
Generally using Old Norse pronouns, since they tend to have a harsher sound than Old English, which I prefer for Rohanese
Using -a as a nominative verb ending (I.E. “ik dûka” -> “I dwell”)
Utilizing Old English -lic, converted as -mak (adjectival suffix meaning "having the form of," comparable to modern English -ly)
So, for an example of this in action:
Sōðe lufu “true love” > Sōðe heorte “true heart” > Dûno lauh’dûkanu > “true-beloveds”
Sōðe “true” > Dûno (initial consonant change + vowel lengthening rules, chose N for personal euphonics)
Heorte “heart” > Lauho
Lauh’dûkanu > compound of Lauho + dûkan + plural nominative-accusative suffix -u > “heart-dwellers” (you don't NEED the apostrophe but I think it looks better; personal choice)
(Note how close “heart” Lauho + “horse” Loho are lol; unintentional but fitting for the Rohirrim)
ok it’s nowhere near comprehensive considering the lack of material we have to work with, but would anyone be interested in my notes on reverse-engineering Rohanese words??
*edit: “actual” Rohanese not just the old English “translations” that get passed off as Rohanese 95% of the time

Okay, so, today on deeply nerdy things I'm working on (and also looking for advice on; vote at the end of the post!)...
So I've been working on coloring Worm's page from the quarantine coloring book (this is what I have so far), and I decided that I needed to put a name on the side of the boat. Because this stream was the first thing I watched with Gerard and Worm, I decided that “Daydream Believer” would be a good name for the boat (fair warning, it’s a pretty violent game they’re playing in that stream, but to summarize, the part I’m referencing is from Gerard’s turn as the murderer when he starts playing Daydream Believer by the Monkees to creep out Worm and the other dude they’re playing with, which is the moment I linked to.)
But then I thought, this is an alien creature’s magical space-boat. I can’t just title it Daydream Believer in English. So I whipped out my D&D player’s handbook (5e) and went to the Elvish alphabet.
But then I thought, I can’t just write Daydream Believer in English with Elvish letters. I need to translate it into proper Elvish first. Which, of course, the only correct Elvish languages to use are Tolkien’s--Sindarin and Quenya. (In any case, I don’t believe that there is a complete D&D Elvish language.)
So, I brought up a few Sindarin and Quenya online dictionaries and translators, and I came up with a few different translations for “Daydream Believer”, and I wrote them out and transcribed my favorites to try and see which ones looked best in the D&D Elvish alphabet (I know Tengwar is technically the correct Tolkien-based Elvish script to be writing in, but I was already rolling with the D&D Elvish transcriptions, and I think I like the look of them for an alien space boat better, so I stuck with the D&D Elvish). But now I’m kind of stuck between three, and I thought, why not ask tumblr?
The two on the left with the blue highlights are Sindarin translations, and the one on the right with the green highlight is Quenya; I know there are differences in use between the two languages but I figured there’s no particular reason an alien couldn’t speak either of them. The first of the two Sindarin translations is “celain ely thenid pen”. ‘Celain’ means daylight, ‘ely’ means dream, and since I couldn’t find the word ‘believe’ in Sindarin anywhere I looked, I used ‘thenid’ which means ‘faithful’ and ‘pen’ as a pronoun meaning ‘one’. So, the first translation is really “daylightdream faithfulone”, which is fairly close. But I chose that translation mostly for aesthetics, and I worried I had strayed from the truest translation of the words, so I did another.
The second Sindarin translation I did was “eraid ely esteliad pen”. ‘Eraid’ is just ‘day’ instead of ‘daylight’, and ‘esteliad’ is ‘trusting’, which seemed closer to the meaning of a daydream believer as one who is trusting in their daydreams rather than one who is faithful to their daydreams, although that could lead to a whole debate on the meaning of the original song, which--let’s be honest I’m way overthinking this already. I’m just trying to find pretty letters to write on the side of this boat, lol :) But nerdy linguistic overanalysis for a random obscure reference that pretty much no one is going to get is what I’m here for, haha.
So, the third and final of my top three translations is the Quenya one, “árë maur savindo”. Quenya actually seemed to translate the phrase more easily, if only because there’s a word for “believer”. ‘Árë’ is day, ‘maur’ is dream or vision (which, I like the idea that the daydream believer’s daydreams are visions of a sort--oh no I’m analyzing the song again, I said I wouldn’t do that, I’ll stop, haha. I actually have thought about the meaning of the song quite a lot), and ‘savindo’ is believer. The Quenya translator that gave me ‘savindo’ warned that it was fan-created, but ‘sav-’ is in fact the Quenya verb for believe, and there was a whole section in the Quenya-English dictionary I looked at for “one who ___” verbs and they all ended in ‘indo’, so I think it’s a correctly derived translation.
Tl;dr--those are the three best translations I came up with, and I highlighted where I wrote each of them out in Elvish in the image above. So, now I’m asking you to vote: which Elvish translation of Daydream Believer should I write on the boat on my coloring page? “Celain ely thenid pen”, “eraid ely esteliad pen”, or “árë maur savindo”? Vote in the replies or reblog with your vote! :)
Postscript: If anyone wants to see my full Elvish translation scribblings which led to this, here’s what my process in my sketchbook looked like:
(There was a reflection from an old art class in the top left so that’s what I roughly photoshopped out if you were wondering.)
It’s always fun to have an excuse to mess around with translations and practice writing things in Elvish script :)

Consider, once more, the universal cannibalism of the sea; all whose creatures prey upon each other, carrying on eternal war since the world began. Consider all this; and then turn to the green, gentle, and most docile earth; consider them both, the sea and the land; and do you not find a strange analogy to something in yourself? 12, 30, 33, 36!
Hell yes, thank you! :D
12. a song by an artist who’s from where you’re from (town/city/state/country)I almost went for the gimme with Tonight, Tonight, but that isn’t quite the right suburb. So instead, from one who did indeed have…some sort of times at Barrington High:
youtube
30. a song 40 years older than youFor some reason, when I was a tiny child my dad would always sing me to sleep (as a sort of bedtime story) with songs about either shipwrecks or trainwrecks:
youtube
33. a song you have ZERO patience forThat garbage fucking Toby Keith song about “we’ll put a boot in your ass, it’s the American way”. My dad, as mentioned above, has introduced me to some great music; he’s also had a very regrettable pop/contemporary country phase.
36. a great song you discovered thanks to television
So here’s the thing: Chicago has an excellent broadcast music show, JBTV, that shows music videos, interviews, and brief live shows recorded in-house (whose tapings I’ve attended a good few times!). When I was a kid, it aired at ~12AM on Monday mornings, and I’d try my very best to sneak in a viewing on a shitty 9″ set that still had bunny ears and honest-to-god dials. They played a Melissa Auf der Maur video on the episode hosted by one of my teen favorite bands, and I immediately fell in love:

#no! i didn't have cable! mtv was out of my reach#besides in my teen years I was heavily into a certain strain of the Chicago indie scene#anyway ty again!#ask meme#circuitbird

I was bored on the flight so because I'm a fucking dork I decided my entertainment would be labeling the corals I identified in the pic. It was gonna be identifying all the ones I could but turned into "what I could fit on the photo" bc the diversity in this shot is wonderful.
So now I'm gonna introduce y'all to how we get around the fact that you may have noticed that both the species names and the common names for these things are long, take up space, and are just a pain to write out. To get around this abbreviations are used with the first letter of the genus and the first three letters of the species, which is simpler and ends up even used in conversation so you'll hear things like "wow there was a lot of DLAB on that dive that all looked really good!" It also really helps with memorizing the species, since the abbreviation is easier to learn and from that you can get an idea of the genus and species.
(it also leads to hilarity as you see people decide if they're going to say PSTR as "piss-ter" or chicken out and say "p-star." Most settle on an in between "p-stirr" but I've seen that internal battle take place so many times.)
So from the above list we have.
CNAT = Boulder Brain Coral (C. natans)
Plume Gorgonian (Pseudopterogorgia spp) not abbreviated here since I couldn't be 100% on the species.
DLAB = Grooved Brain Coral (D. Labyrinthiformis)
PAST = Mustard Hill Coral (P. astreoides)
OANN = Boulder Star Coral (O. annularis)
MCAV = Great Star Coral (M. cavernosa)
EFAS = Smooth Flower Coral (E. fastigiata)
MALC = Branching Fire Coral (M. alcicornis)
MAUR = Pencil Coral (M. auretenra) (maybe, I zoomed in and squinted and think it's there)
Boulder brain coral (Colpophyllia natans)
Sea Plume gorgonian (Pseudopterogorgia sp) ((I think it's americanus but gorgonians are a pain for ID))
Grooved brain coral (Diploria labyrinthiformis)
Mustard hill coral (Porites astreoides)
Boulder star coral (Orbicella annularis)
-Bonus Background Corals Bc I wanna See How Much I Can ID For Funsies-
Great star coral (Montastrea cavernosa)
Smooth Flower Coral (Eusmilia fastigiata)
Branching fire coral (Millepora alcicornis)
#the DLAB and CNAT can be told apart by the ridge and groove shapes#also coral taxonomy is a fuckin mess these will probably change in five minutes#any bio students try the abbreviation method#i am SHIT at memorization but the abbreviations actually make it way easier for me#gives you a good starting point#and let's you point at a thing and yell THAT'S A MALC#theres efas scattered all over this pic i gave up labeling them all#the poll said you wanted identifications well here it is bitches

[Duplicated:252393] William The Conqueror And His Abbey Church
You can learn about William the Conqueror and his abbey church by heading to Caen in Normandy. The abbey church of Saint-Étienne is part of the Abbaye aux Hommes (the Men's Abbey). The abbey is a former Benedictine monastery and is dedicated to Saint Stephen. It was founded in 1063 by William the Conqueror and has one of the largest Romanesque churches in France.
Building the Abbey Church
William founded the abbey in 1063 and building began in 1065/1066. It was almost complete in 1077 and therefore was consecrated that year on 13th September in William's presence. Only the last two bays of the nave and the West façade with its two towers were still to be built. These additional features were completed in 1090.
Caen abbey West facade
William chose Caen as he wanted to make the town the capital of the Duchy of Normandy. The building work was rapid due to funding received following the Battle of Hastings as well as readily available materials such as Caen stone and wood.
The size of the church is incredible and it has the grandeur of a cathedral. It measures 110 meters long and over 42 meters wide at the transept. The North tower is the tallest at 82 meters.
Architectural Style and History
The Romanesque nave dates from the 11th and 13th centuries. An important ribbed vault featured was added in about 1120, and was the first time it had been used in France. This abbey, together with the nearby Abbaye Aux Dames, is considered to be a forerunner of the Gothic style. The original Romanesque apse was replaced in 1166 by an early Gothic chevet, complete with rosette windows and flying buttresses. Nine towers and spires were added in the 13th century. The choir was rebuilt in the thirteenth century in a Gothic style.
Architectural details of note include the galleries on the first and second levels: the Halbout Chapel; the clock in the North transept gallery installed in 1744; the grand organ made in 1744; the lantern tower; and the rail surrounding the choir.
The high lantern tower in the middle of the church collapsed during the Wars of Religion and was never rebuilt. During the French Revolution, the abbey church became a parish church.
From 1804 to 1961 the abbey buildings accommodated a prestigious high school called the Lycée Malherbe. During the Normandy Landings, thousands of Caen inhabitants found refuge in the church. The Allies were made aware of this and placed a red cross made from a sheet on the rooftop. This showed that it was a hospital and a safe haven. As a result the abbey church was not destroyed during the bombings which took place in July 1944. However, the nearby church of Saint-Étienne-le-Vieux was damaged and remains in its ruined state today.
The Tomb of William the Conqueror
William's wife Matilda died in 1083 and was buried in the Abbaye aux Dames in Caen. In 1087 William died in Rouen and his body was sent to Caen to be buried in the abbey church as he had requested. When William commissioned the abbey church to be built, he had already decided that it was to be his mausoleum.
His tomb has been disturbed several times since 1087. The first time was in 1522 when the grave was opened by envoys from Rome. In 1562, during the French Wars of Religion, the grave was again opened. William's bones were scattered and lost, with the exception of one thigh bone. This single relic was reburied in 1642. A further destruction of the tomb happened during the French Revolution. The current white marble marker replaced it in the early 19th century. You can see the marble stone in the choir today. It is inscribed in Latin with the words 'Here is buried the invincible William the Conqueror, King of England and Duke of Normandy; founder of this house, who died in the year 1087.'
The Abbey
After a series of disasters, the monks of Saint Maur took over the abbey in the late 17th century and decided to rebuild all of the abbey buildings. The Abbaye-aux-Hommes became the City Hall (Le Mairie) in 1963. You can take a paid tour of this 18th-century building. You can visit this site for more information about tours of the abbey.
Practical Information
The abbey church in Caen is on Esplanade Jean-Marie Louvel. You can also access it via rue Guillaume le Conquérant - a small side street leads to the small entrance door. Entry to the abbey church in Caen is free. You can visit from Monday to Friday from 9am - 6.30pm, Saturdays from 9am - 6pm and on Sundays from 2 - 6.30pm.
