• You were no master at it so it was a little hard for you to say if you were singing with your throat or not, and that was one of his reasons why you never sang infront of him, but following some advices from your vocal coach helped alot.

• You were cooking something when you remembered the part of an opera you did when you didn't know Phel.

• Not noticing him, you started singing the solo and, my my, our boy was shocked.

• He realised you didn't know he was there, but he just stared at you awestruck.

• You never raised your voice in front of him, but to hear it so loudly, he was certainly amazed by it. (Doesn't mean that you were screaming, but it is pretty loud when someone sings right next to you, been there, done that myself)

• It was powerful, and even if he didn't understand a word of what you said, he still thought it was beautiful.

After ending your solo, you turned around and saw him, completely frozen in the spot.

Your cheeks went red

"Phel!" You exclaimed. "I didn't know you were home."

• He kinda knew you sang a little, but he never knew what kind of genre you would be into.

• When you heard their song for the first time, you liked it a lot, so he thought your favourite genre of music must be electronic or pop.

• Truth to be told, you were really versatile with your taste in music.

• You two have a shared playlist where you once put an aria by accident, and you didn't notice until he told you.

"Babe, do you listen to classical music?" You stared at him. How did he know?

"Yeah... I usually sing it too..."

"Shut up, let me hear you! I wanna hear you sing the one you put in our playlist."

Panic. Total fucking panic. What if he didn't like it? What if you messed up the high note? What if...?

It lead to some cool theories. - On that note, the game aspects are so cool!! Especially when paired with him going after people online, just good synergy with awesome style! - Fuuta’s scared face after he realizes what he did. The great contrast of other foes simply being knocked out then being met with blood splatter. - The tempo of the song changing with his mood is a really good touch as well. Make the song more chaotic which highlights his character traits well

I care so much about This is How To Be In Love With You- it's visuals are brilliant in the ways it conveys its themes and narrative. Sometimes I wonder how jarring some Warriors MAPs and MVs may look to people who don't watch Warriors fan content

Warriors is probably the biggest fandom with such high animation presence and eventually emerged with traits that are unique to the fandom

What makes them different imo is that they are usually very fast-paced and escalate too fast (also, gore is presented pretty casually/offhand sometimes), with facial expressions of the characters changing very quickly, and that they usually cover entire strings of events rather than a single scene or scenario, and they tend to skip some of those events, since people in the know will understand what's going on

I hope this doesn't come off as nitpicking or critique, I'm not shaming, fan creations shouldn't be held to standards since we're not trying to get into an industry, and more often than not, these "blunders" makes them more endearing

After a few scenes from the music video Yena was shown as she was sitting on the floor and watching the cuts. The staff member told her something and she laughed. Then she recognised the other camera and waved.

"Did you record me just now?"

"Ah, then you must saw my cool face. I feel shy."

Some laughed at her sillyness.

"Unnie made my make-up so pretty. I'm gonna fall in love with myself."

Then the camera zoomed in on her face and she stayed serious. Until she pretended to bite the camera.

Recording Behind The Scene

Overall it was a regular recording video. Taeyong and Chenle visited her one by one. At one point her face was red because of that one long line in the song. But at the end, she looked so happy. The video ended with her little speech.

"This whole week was so exciting for me. I hope you guys also love this song. I put a lot of work on it. Thank you for giving me this chance. See you guys."

I waited until I had a day off to review and listen to IVE's new album, but first, let me share my thoughts on HEYA and the MV. I've seen it a few times since it came out on Monday, but still can't decide how much I like the song.

The MV itself is pretty amazing. The visuals (the beautiful colors, patterns, artwork, etc.) and creativity are really strong, the camera work is awesome, the styling in great, and this is by far their best MV and a great MV in general, but, on the other hand it feels rushed and disjointed... They jump from one eclectic frame to another, and my brain doesn't even have time to digest what I'm looking at - too many colors, too many different members appearing on each shot. The MV doesn't really tell a story or allow you to properly take in the visuals, the members, the sets, the choreo, even the song. It's a very pretty MV, but too fast paced.

Gaeul got the raw end of the deal. She actually has, imo, the most beautiful shots in the MV - esp. the close up on her face when she's looking ethereal; imo the best, most iconic shot -, but she has, like, 0 meaningful lines. For some reason, people don't seem to care for Gaeul? I don't think she has the best stage presence (she probably has the worst), and, for a main dancer, her dancing doesn't stand out, but she's the best rapper imo and she has a really sweet and mellow personality that I find charming and refreshing. She often goes viral for her parts too (her verses in After Like are some of my favorites).

Also, at this point you can call me a Rei anti although I don't hate her at all. I'm just honestly sick and tired of her face and voice. She gets literally all the lines, on par with Yujin, but her voice, to me, is super childish and annoying. There are verses of hers I like, especially the their first songs, but overall, she has way too many lines now. People like her because she's cute and acts sexy, right? To me, she's by far the weakest dancer and her personality is the least appealing (again, not to sound like an anti, but I watch all of IVE's videos on their YT channel and can't stand her anymore). Anyway, she objectively has way too many lines in this song. Her opening verse is terrible to me, and none of the others are any better (esp. the bridge...).

The line distribution in this song is pretty surprising. They gave Liz tons of lines (it seems they're starting to appreciate her again...), and she ate them! Her voice sounded amazing, and Liz is also the best live singer and one of the best dancers (after Yujin, she's the only one who imo doesn't look weak or tired when she dances). Her verses in Heya are some of the best parts of the song, and her first scene is one of my favorites in the MV (I love her outfit and that popping move she does with her chest).

Leeseo too got the lines she deserved. Her first verses aren't great, but I like the rest. I think a lot of people dislike her voice, but I think she's a very talented maknae. I really like her tone (it's catchy and versatile, although sometimes she does sound a bit childish), she has amazing facial expressions, and her dancing is on par with most of the other members. I think Leeseo is great with killing parts.

Wonyoung got less lines than usual, but she had enough screentime anyway. I thought Yujin didn't have enough lines, but it's more like she had less screen time than usual. Her lines in the bridge weren't great though. She would've nailed Liz's post-chorus verse. Imo, she could've taken the second post-chorus. Gaeul should've been given half of Rei's verses, at least.

Even after listening to the song on Spotify, I'm still not sure how I feel about it. It's refreshing and they pulled off the concept change, but Baddie might be better. This song is safer, and some parts are great, but it's not the catchiest, and it has too much rap probably.

Idk... Really glad for my girl Liz, though.

Oh, and the choreo... not great at all. I've seen their Studio Choom performance twice and can barely remember anything. IVE are very weak dancers and their choreographers sadly don't know how to make them look good. I thought things were looking up with I AM and Baddie, but...

Fri(end)s- observations and review

Acting-

As usual, Tae has done a great job at acting. But the actress's acting was just.. meh. Makes me really appreciate IU. And not just that, Tae's acting was fine but they literally had no chemistry. That happens when you don't take time to know your coworker. IU and Tae are great friends and great actors and hence their chemistry works so well. Tae is able to create chemistry with anyone as long as he knows them (as seen with bts members and in his acting works too), even when the other side isn't good at it. But this time, somehow zero chemistry.

Somebody pointed out that there was an 'intimacy director' at the MV set too. Seems like they directed intimacy for all couples except the main one.

Storyline-

From the teasers, I already knew the storyline was going to be fun and interesting. I think it's pretty obvious that the scenes and environment we witness throughout the MV was from Tae's POV.

At first, he perceived that everyone else was happy because they were in love and had partners. In his second life, he was in love (or so he thought) and somehow all his problems in life were non existent. And he stopped noticing other people. So this time we saw the actual state of people around him and no one was actually completely happy, because relationships take work and not all relationships are meant to be. But Tae doesn't know that yet, because he smiles smugly at the camera with the girl by his side.

And then he dies for a second time, but this time, he is smiling. Because he has realised something finally.

In his 3rd life, he wakes up beside himself (selfcest lol). But basically it means self-love. The moral being that a relationship won't change your fate. And that people who depend on a relationship for all their happiness actually lack self-love.

This time he wakes up with a knowing smile. And you know what, he probably knows he won't die this time because he won't be distracted by any strong emotions of love or despair. He'll focus on himself and he'll notice the speeding car before crossing the road.

Honestly, I expected that the song would be 100% english. We already know that Tae is heavily inspired by a lot of western artists and loves to sing in English. The song is good and has some new vocal flavours from him. And it does sound inspired from a couple of songs I've heard before. I can't remember which ones, but definitely inspired. I loved the outro and overall the song is pleasing to the ears.

Edit(+) I appreciate Tae for trying a new cadence and tempo. The words are fast paced in this song and for a non-English speaker, he did very well.

He's not the writer. But he definitely knows what he's singing about. I'm seeing vminnies make endless connections and tbh, i like seeing theories lol. As a lore and as a story, it's interesting.

Daisuke Kurosaki's T2 MV (MeMe)

The scene opens up with heavy rock music, a lab is shown in a blue tinted light. There is a medical examination table with leather restraints underneath an overhead lamp, surgical tools laid out on a table next to it, and glass cabinets filled with other tools. The camera zooms out slowly, giving a complete view of the lab/surgical room(?) until it fades to black and the lyrics starts

Daisuke in the same outfit that he had in the first MV 'thumbnail', except he's much younger (13-14~). Another man, his body blacked out but his outfit consists of a tidy and luxurious suit, is on the ground and writhing in pain. He tries to crawl away, but his leg gives out from too many injuries. The camera panels to young!Daisuke who is holding a pistol, shooting it before the screen goes black

Young!Daisuke then walks back to a large mansion, accompanied by two figures blacked out. They open the door with many locks, guiding him through elegant and sumptuous hallways, until they make their way to the lab that is implied to be underground (since there is a shot of them using an elevator). Young!Daisuke is then stripping out of his assassin uniform and is guided to the table. He is about to be strapped to it before the scene shifts again

The next scene shows present!Daisuke, sleeping on a couch in what seems to be a lavish penthouse. He slowly opens his eyes and looks around, confused to the sudden change of environment. He looks down, frantic, but his hair is still covering his left eye until the scene switches again

The next scene is young!Daisuke again, holding another gun. He goes on a frenzy, skillfully shooting on a roof carefully selected politicians. His face is seen, his hair not long enough to cover his left eye, but the camera is still positioned on the right side, still making it unseen

He then goes back to the mansion, accompanied by the same two black figures. He then steps into the lab, stripping again, but the scene then plays in fast forward, showing the same routine again and again of young!Daisuke killing people and then going to the lab again

The scene then shifts back to the penthouse again, but it's young!Daisuke, this time dressed in rags. He has both his eyes, but they are both normal dark blue eyes. He trips on an expensive carpet, a look of frustration on his face before blood starts to pour from the roof. He turns around on his back, looking in fear until the room starts to rain with blood, staining the walls and floor red

The next scene is present Daisuke, in his assassin outfit. But he is going back to the penthouse unaccompanied. He strips until he's shirtless and is about to walk into what seems to be the bedroom. He opens the door to find his younger self in the same assassin outfit, but both his eyes are visible and look normal. They stare at each other for a good few seconds before his younger self smiles sweetly and genuinely, making present!Daisuke look at him with disbelief. Young!Daisuke produces a gun out of his breast pocket, about to shoot present!Daisuke, but instead a picture is blown into present!Daisuke's direction. He turns it over, revealing a picture of a little girl with shoulder length blond hair and dark blue eyes. Present!Daisuke looks down at it, before moving his bangs, revealing his left eye now an extremely vibrant and radiant blue color that's glowing, before smiling as the song fades out

So the fact that Crunch only has the second season should have deterred me from even starting it, but I guess I didn’t want to watch anymore IMas Side M, so here we are.

I also did not look beforehand if there was any seiyuu I know in it, but this seems like the type of show that has Nobodies. Anyway, I’ve done this before with Futsal Boys, so I can handle this.

So if I thought UniteUp felt like a sports anime, this would be the more generic, played up straight up sports anime of idols. It’s preeetty much Futsal Boys but with idols. In terms of it selling something that doesn’t quite line up exactly for the target audience? I’ve never seen any of the Puri (not Cure) series or Aikatsu, but I’m assuming those are also “magical” transforming idols using cards? The most I’ve been exposed to costume changing cards is Happiness Charge Precure, which, I’m assuming was inspired by series like that. I’m not a fan of it, but I get what vibe it’s supposed to be. So like, sentai toys, but with idols. 

Anyway, not gonna lie, I binged the first three episodes straight up because it was entertaining enough. It’s not as deep as I would have liked, where Blue’s tragic backstory was Not the “I watched someone I care about commit suicide” that I thought it was gonna be, but I guess that was semi traumatizing for a kid. I can’t say the characters are necessarily deep, as Kanade’s reason for dropping soccer kind of pisses me off, and we could have gotten a little more something from Keigo before he left for the 20:32 train. (Why was this the make or break role? Was there an on going rivalry between Keigo and Shin before?) 

The pacing of the series is too fast but at the same time doesn’t really give information. I feel like it really is targeted towards 5-8 year olds with the way the story is written. (Why the characters kept dredging up 2032’s lyrics and talking about it like that. It just felt like it was written sooo simple-y.) Also the semi-repetitive lines/gags from ep 1 and 2, mostly episode 1? Felt like they were dragging for time at some point (a minute too much of Kanade handing out balloons, a minute too much of Kanade and Yellow competing)

Also, I love transformation sequences IF THEYRE NICE TO LOOK AT. The boy’s Dorika henshins are way too samey, so yeah I’m gonna be bored at them. I get it's so they have a generic enough pose so they can CG slap the DoriKa outfits on. The landing pose, dorika catch animations are nice and fun, but iunno, I guess I like my smooth 2D henshins where they are fun to look at.

I complained about IChu’s performances but I see that DF is going to try to cram a performance into each episode. I get it I get it. I think it works for DF though, even if I think the performances themselves are kinda goofy. I like the face model for the guys, but the rest of the body feels a little wonky. (Their hands look under rendered and blobby sometimes I don’t know.) Hold the Phone, this was from 2016, which was also around the time I7 came out. And these guys look leagues better than the first MonGen MV, sooooo I think I know who is winning in this category. 

I guess I can get to talking about the characters now? …I uh, I think Kanade is cute ngl. I like the ponytail and even though his seiyuu sounds unrefined in terms of vocal range/acting, I like the boyish tone. Everyone is generic as hell though, but I was semi pleasantly surprised that Kanade (Red) was butting heads with Yellow (Junya, if I feel like remembering it) instead of the usual Red vs Blue. 

Speaking of Blue, I can’t really say that Kanade’s reason for wanting Shin to stay was super developed but ngl man that chase scene and “I dont want to not see you” etc etc, that shit got to me. See, the tone could have been more serious, if Shin’s tragic backstory was about suicide, so Kanade chasing him thinking that Shin would have followed the same path because of the scandal, etc etc etc. Anyway I’m already writing fic about them in my head while watching the episode skldjflkslfk

Also ngl, Mikami grabbing Kanade and throwing him into the car saying he wanted him Sure Was A Way to Sell to Fujoshis. It’s me, I’m the Bitches. Mikami is supposed to be the fun old star, I guess, I like him, he’s fun. The DF president is also cute! Anyway, I’m looking forward to meeting the other veterans of Sankishi.

Uh oh, I accidentally looked at the seiyuu casting and I guess there actually Are notable seiyuu in here. That’s fine though, I like when they give newbies a chance, but it’s too detached when I know Nobody. (Futsal Boys.) 

Anyway, I guess I’m looking forward to Purple Sweets Shota and his maybe not so tragic backstory with the Black other Shota that might be his Twin, because we love twins. (Not me.) Also, I couldn’t tell if Keigo was also an idol in the opening or if it was someone else? Will also look forward to finding out.

Music Monday #228: VICTON - Virus release: November 2022 genre: Kpop cw: intermittent bright flashing

Yeah, I know, I've been saying I'd feature this MV for how many weeks now? Several. Like, all month. And it was supposed to come up here even before that and then didn't because reasons of my health being complete shithouse for months now. But I am determined, dangnabit! And have some things to say.

Let's just say VICTON has been Going Through It over the last couple of years. Debuting in November 2016 as a seven member unit on Plan A (later Play M) Ent, VICTON has been on a steady if not very flashy progression, releasing several singles and EPs and one OST before finally putting out a full album in 2021, then changing companies to IST in 2022. It could have been a promising new phase - IST is among the more successful of the small labels - but between Chan's DUI investigation last September (and subsequent departure from the group) and then Subin, Hanse, and Byungchan being unable to come to satisfactory contract terms this past April (due to military service requirements, Seungsik, Seungwoo, and Sejun are still on their original contracts), there's a very real chance that we've hit the end of the road. There hasn't been an official disbandment notice, but it wouldn't be unprecedented for a group to have a silent disbanding. On the other hand, the industry also has yet to pull out a success with a group whose members are signed across different labels1, so while I'm still clinging to hope as an ALICE, I know that hope is quite thin indeed.

Getting back to the song itself, Virus isn't really fast enough to be called a proper dance beat while at the same time having too many EDM elements to be properly called a ballad either. The use of flanging on the members' voices works for me, but makes this a somewhat atypical track for a group whose fandom name is an "acronym" for Always We Love the Voice. XD The rest of the EP is more straightforwardly melodic while still being in that space between dance and ballad.

Maybe because of what happened in the two months ahead of its release, the video carries a certain melancholy feel to it that may or may not actually be warranted? This also only has the five members in it which, given the usual production cycle, makes me wonder if they weren't made to take an afternoon to redo the group scenes and then the whole thing re-edited to remove Chan's participation in it. My ear isn't tuned enough to tell if they re-recorded the EP as well - I suspect not, because that could have been a potentially huge expense, depending on where in the cycle they were when he was dismissed, but I really couldn't say.

Seungwoo (who was not part of this EP) has completed his service, but Seungsik and Sejun have only just started theirs (enlistments in March and June of this year, respectively). Given the contract issue and the low level expectation that Hanse and Byungchan will start their manditory service terms next year, if they are still able to work together, another comeback is likely to be some time off yet.

"Choice" is out now wherever you like to do your Kpop streaming and likely still available for physical purchase as well. If that EP tickles your fancy, I recommend giving the rest of their discography a try as well.

1. yes, I know there are groups doing the still-together-across-labels thing, but GOT7 has done one release this way and no one else has been doing it long enough to be called a success yet, so I stand by this claim.

 February 1st marked the anniversary of the formation of the 5th generation. It went by so fast, but I can remember how much work we put into it this past year.

 Recently at work the staff and the other members have said things about how much we’ve improved, that makes me really happy, I think ‘doing my best’ has become my source of motivation and I’ve come to know how much those words can boost others.

I’m looking forward to see how I evolve over the course of this year, I want to become even better than my expectations!
