artist in denial of being depressed: omg this 2 month long art block has been crazy... sorry i haven't updated any of my fics in a long while! it's just been super difficult to daydream! so weird that i've lost a little bit of passion for my current comfort character and ocs... this couldn't possibly have any implications or alternative explanations

Are you a Kpop fan with photosensitivity? Have you ever started a new MV only to realize halfway through you really could have used a warning for the police subplot, the abusive relationship dynamics or just a hanky warning for the adorable pupper saving someone's life? Curious to range beyond the big names but not sure where to start?
Every week, I round up new Kpop video releases across all the genres - dance, ballad, rock, trot, whatever comes across my feeds - and then annotate them for content warnings. I warn for both the usual (flashing, medical, gore) and less usual (clowns, abusive relationships, Suho's stupidly pretty face) suspects, plus sometimes I tack on my cranky commentary as someone who's been a fan of the scene for over twenty years. If that sounds interesting to you, come on over!
This week's listing features new music from ONF, Chungha, Boyfriend, As One, plus many more!

I don’t know how to explain this well…but I’m 30 years old and I feel like I’ve had to ‘sacrifice’ my entire adult life to unprecedented times, the pandemic and daily anxiety over hateful politicians and whatever rights they want to take away on any given day and I’m just so fucking tired

Whenever I take a long car ride I end up exhausted afterwards, and I’m always like “why am I so tired? I was just sitting around doing nothing all day.”
But the answer, it turns out, is I was doing something. Riding in a car jars your body in many directions and requires constant microadjustments of your muscles just to stay in place and hold your normal posture. Because you’re inside the car, inside the situation, it’s easy not to notice all the extra work you’re doing just to maintain the status quo.
There’s all sorts of type of work that we think of as “free” that require spending energy: concentrating, making decisions, managing anxiety, maintaining hypervigilance in an unfriendly environment, dealing with stereotype threat, processing a lot of sensory input, repairing skin cells damaged sun exposure, trying to stay warm in a cold room.
The next time you think you’re tired from “nothing”, consider instead that you’re probably in situation where you’re doing a lot of unnoticed extra work just to stay in place.

Music Monday #257: NCT 127 - Walk release: July 2024 genre: Kpop, hiphop cw: aggressive flashing, camera motion, Mark and Doyoung in glasses
What's this, a Music Monday again? Yeah, I know, it's been awhile. But finally, finally I'm clearing my summer trio with this track from NCT 127!
I'm purposefully using a performance version rather than the music video, but if you want to watch that surreal affair, it's here with warnings for flashing lights and Taeil's stupid face (though it also includes an adorable Taeyong baby picture, so, you know, use your own judgement) -- since Taeil was still on no-dancing medical restrictions at the time, performance versions don't include him and his lines are visually covered variously by Jungwoo, Doyoung, and Yuta. And if you have no idea why I'm casting salty aspersions on Taeil, uh, we can talk in the comments.
ANYway.... In spite of NCT 127 being masters of what my wife and I jokingly call fungus pop, for me, Walk was a hit right out of the gate. Which was mostly a surprise because the last few A-titles from 127 have needed some time to grow on me first. And while purists may feel the urge to argue, 127 is NCT's hiphop subunit, meaning this fit in perfectly with my hiphop summer obsession. It's a good steady beat with lyrics rooted in a message of ignoring the haters and moving along at your own pace.
As a performance version, there is ... probably zero lore to this, both because of its video type and also because I'm not convinced SM3.0 didn't kill all lores anyway. And that's fine, I guess. On the other hand, the ex-dancer in me enjoys the focus on a choreography that looks a lot easier than it actually is, between close quarters and passing moves. Still, there's a lot of bright/aggressive flashing in here, especially in the back half ...which is a common problem in performance versions, really, but the Nstop version is the most forgiving in that respect. It's a fun three minutes if you can do it and the boys cover the lines so well I almost can't remember where Taeil was supposed to be.
WALK, the 6th album from which this is the promo track, is available on all major streaming services and wherever you do your Kpop buying. While Jaehyun has since started his mandatory military service (and Doyoung is expected to start his soon), 127 has been doing fanmeetings and live shows with US dates coming up at the end of this month and on into March.
Want to see Music Monday deep dives more often? Sponsor a song selection! For the low, low price of one (1) KoFi, I'll write up the song of your choice. ANY song of your choice. Yes, even that one that's been played to death. Yes, your obscure faves too. With sponsors, I can stop skipping weeks and falling further and further behind in the releases! Sponsor a current CB for the next open Music Monday slot or sponsor a throwback for a Thursday feature! But seriously, if you've been enjoying my selections and analyses, we (me and the foster kittens) would love a KoFi in thanks. DW | Mastodon | Bluesky | Ko-fi | Patreon | Discord

fact: when pidgin dialects involve english, -glish becomes the suffix, eg: chinglish, konglish, hinglish fact: slash pair name order puts the top first and the bottom second, eg: deancas vs casdean conclusion: english is an uke language and that’s why we have an omegaverse, not an alphaverse
