Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alt text is an accessibility tool for many people, primarily those who are blind or visually disabled. It is not appropriate to ever use it as a punchline for a joke to tell a joke. Doing so takes away its reliability and trustworthiness. There are people who are INCAPABLE OF SEEING AN IMAGE OR FULLY SEEING AN IMAGE OTHERWISE. Using alt text to tell jokes HURTS THESE PEOPLE.
This post has like 8,000 notes. I'm so disappointed in how many people think this okay, but even more sad that many people don't understand how this is harmful or what alt text is even for. Please don't propagate or encourage these jokes. You are misusing and actively harming an accessibility tool. If you didn't know that this is what it was for, now you do know! Please do your part and don't spread such things.
Personal edit: I'd like to clarify that if you didn't know this, I don't want you to feel attacked or anything like that. It's okay you didn't know, but now that you do, you can do your best moving on! I said I was sad because I'm a visually impaired person and it can be sad that people don't know these things. I would have phrased this post a bit more objectively if I had known people would see it! It was just meant to be a personal expression of my feelings. I made this post as a visually impaired person myself who uses a screenreader.
Informational edit: This is ableist/bad because it ruins the integrity of the tool and makes people misunderstand what alt text is for. If people do this, it makes people falsely learn what alt text is and use it for notes, captions, or jokes. Misusing alt text ruins the integrity of the tool because it makes it so one cannot consistently rely on alt text to be accurate. It is also ableist because alt text literally just tells someone what an image is/says, so if someone cannot see the image, they don't necessarily have a way of knowing that the alt text is inaccurate, or they might be able to tell that it's a joke/caption, but then still have no idea what the actual image is/says.

How & Why to add Plain Text to your Coining Posts!
[PT: How and why to add plain text to your coining posts. END PT.]
What is plain text?
Plain text is just text without any outside formatting (i.e. bold, italics, big, etc.) that's added to posts that have them.
Why do posts need plain text?
A lot of the time, it's for people who are visually impaired and/or who have any vision issues! Bolded or italics may be harder to read, big text might be worse for some people instead of better, and colored text could mess with a person's eyes (like me!) for some examples. At the end of the day, it's for accessibility!
Okay, how do I do plain text?
There's a few different ways you can write the plain text itself, and really, how you do it is up to you.
[PT: Text. END PT.]
[pt: text. end pt.]
PT: Text. END PT.
pt: text. end pt.
Those are just a few of the most common ways we see people write them; essentially, the core components are "PT" (to indicate a start of a plain text) and "END PT" (to indicate the end). As for the plain text itself, it should be the exact same thing but with proper grammar/vocabulary (other than capitalization, if you prefer all lowercase). Some examples are:
hallo!!! how r u doing today :333 -> PT: Hallo! How are you doing today? :3 [cat emoticon]. END PT.
vi'm doing good, how about kyu? -> [PT: Vi'm [I'm] doing good, how about you? END PT.]
th4t's g00d! h4v3 y0u n0t1c3d th4t 0ur tqs 4r3 ch4ng1ng 3v3ry m3ss4g3? -> pt: that's good! have you noticed that our tqs [typing quirks] are changing every message? end pt.
why ywes, the fictional character has! h♡ believes that the op of this post is a dork -> [pt: why yes, [i have]! h[heart] believes that the [original poster] of this post is a dork. end pt.]
Personally, if something needs to be changed in a plain text—that being an acronym, pronoun, or something else—I flip-flop between adding it next to it in brackets or parenthesis or just straight up replacing it in brackets. Either or works!
Where should I put plain text?
It depends on the text you're making plain, if that makes sense. For example: if it's something unreadable (i.e. replacing letters with numbers), then you're gonna want the plain text before the actual text. On the other hand, if it is readable—at least to screenreaders—you should put the plain text right below the text itself. Some people like to put all of the plain text at the end of their posts, too; the only thing you're going to want to stay away from is putting it under the cut! This is because if you change your URL (I believe) or deactivate your blog, anything under the cut is no longer accessible and therefore your post no longer has a plain text.
But, plain texts don't fit my post's aesthetic/make my posts look more cluttered!
Have you considered that, in that case, it isn't the plain text's fault? If your post has so many things that need separate plain texts that it ends up just making your post look bad, then I don't think that the plain text is to blame; having a million different things of text colored and bolded and using fancy fonts is just unnecessary. I like to think that my posts are fairly aesthetic, albeit a bit simple.
Could we get a boost for this post? (not forced!) @radiomogai @the-astropaws @local-maneater @hysangel @rabidbatboy @vampitsm @icwdtea @smilepilled @pupcoins

could you give me blind Craig headcannons for my story? Thanks ^_^
all these are assuming he loses his sight later on, aka hes not blind since birth, so tell me if im wrong lol (also partial blindness hcs bc its very underrepresented though a lot more common smh,, but like, can make him totally blind if you want lol you do you)
mandatory disclaimer im not blind nor i know that many blind people so this might be Very wrong lmao (feel free to correct me yall 😭) (also if u arent blind either i recommend u to ask blind ppl and/or blogs like @/cripplecharacters for advice with this)
big on the ignore it till you make it<3
nooo hes not going blind wdym his vision is awesomeee (this guy cant see shit)
probably hid it for as long as he could bc internalized ableism + pettiness = bad decisions
also this overwhelmed the shit out of him, meltdowns often bc autism aint good yall
didn't get the diagnosis till he was almost not leaving home bc he could barely manage there without seeing, outside was a big fat nope
when he did get it, he already could assume what was happening, but the diagnosis made it real- cue the panic attacks<3
he clyde and tweek decorated his white cane with space stickers to make it fun :) (will always be a sucker for characters decorating their mobility aids im not sorry)
spends his nights looking at the stars, trying to memorize them before he cannot see them at all. the thought of losing them forever terrifies him
insecurity oh my god. his friends have to reassure him they won't leave him after he can't see every other day. little guy acts all confident and craps but oh boy he's actually Not 😭
jimmy teaching him cpunk he's just that awesome<3
"how does he deal with ableism?" well he curls up and sobs actually :) /hj
ppl grabbing his cane would send him in a panic at the beginning
THEY'RE NOT HELPING FFS
went from frozen and almost in tears to cursing them out though; he's vocal about his feelings like that<3
when he's with friends they're typically the ones who proceed to curse them out first btw lmao (possibly trip them too. oopsie 🥰)
holding hands with tweek. yes using the cane is easy but tweek is easier. craig would genuinely trust him with his life yall
he's very used to holding tweek's hand since before too, so not much of a change really :)
learnt how ppl's walking sounds very early on
cartman cannot be normal abt disabilities ever so he probably "pranked" craig a lot early on
he got so much shit from everyone for that though so not anymore
craig and butters bond over it :3 with butters' eye injury and all
(their experiences are not the same but taking into account butters is who has most experience with vision problems in all south park, its the best craig can get atp)
got pissed at like 20 screenreaders until he found one that worked for him
will listen to space documentaries, close his eyes, and imagine everything they say. makes him very happy :)
gets a guide dog later on im not sorry service puppies are the best ever
not gonna learn braille his ass is too lazy lmfao
...these arent a shitton of hcs wdymmmmmmm (sorry for text wall it will happen again)

TW: child sexual assault (CSA. not censoring because some people might use screenreaders and they could have a bad experience reading this), suicide, depression and poverty.
sadly i can attest to this myself. it's so so shitty how loablr posts, youtube gurus and specially subliminals all coax you into surrendering to this "magic" where ur whole life can change overnight.
I'm 15, and i had been looking into loa since i was 12/13, and I'm just now coming to terms with the way i realized so much out of something so ridiculous and ineffective. these people make it seem like you can get on a luxurious airplane just by thinking about it and ... somehow i still feel bad for letting that belief go. because although i know its ineffective, my younger self is in the back of my head like "noooo", yk?
so yeah, and i also tried the "void state" for MONTHS. like day. after. day. after. day.
and nothing happened. i just felt (and feel) more hopeless with life changing and escaping from my abusive parents.
LOA doesnt save anyone, yall. it fucks you in all the ways it can. it deceived me into a reality where I could revise my poverty and the csa i went through and it just made me hate myself even more. as if i was my abusers or the money that was lacking in my house. it made my suicidal ideations grow badly, like every single day I'd think of ways to end my life and "wake in my desired reality".
- v (and im soo sorry for the rant. also, my pronouns are she/her, since i forgot to indicate that in other asks)
I'm so sorry you had to go through all of that, and yeah, I can understand the guilt of letting something like this go. I really hope you can get the actual help and support you need soon.
(Also for anyone out there reading this, I am putting all the resources/tips I can find on getting out of abusive situations in my pinned post. Please look into them if you are in need of help yourself.)

hey sorry if this is weird n feel free to ignore but using fonts like in the oral hygiene one looks cute but some ppl (like myself) struggle to read them or use screenreaders which can't read them at all :'3 it's not that big of a deal if it's only tiny bits of text, but I was wondering if you could maybe provide a plain text version of posts where you use them a lot?
sorry if this comes off as rude or pushy, I really like this blog and thank you for running it, I just know there's people like me out there who might need these resources significantly more than me who might not be able to read posts like that because of the font TwT I hope you're having a good day, and thank you if you consider this! :3
No don’t worry it’s not rude or pushy at all! I thought the font might be a bit too much but wasn’t sure ~
I edited it to have the default tumblr fonts so it'll be easier to read & screenreaders will be able to see it properly (I didn't think abt screenreaders not working with the font my bad), reblogs won't reflect that but the original post should be much easier to read now ₊‧°𐐪♡𐑂°‧

I dunno if anyone here is aware, but things are BREWING on Reddit right now.
The company announced that they were going to start charging for use of the API in advance of their IPO, to make the site more profitable. If you don't know what an API is, basically, it's the thing that an app connects to on a website. They did this because far an away most people who use Reddit on their phones do it through a third-party app, because the official one is so so bad. It doesn't have tools for moderating on it, and it also doesn't support screenreader use. Yes, really.
Developers of these apps announced that they weren't going to be able to keep running them. The people in charge of Reddit then tried to present it as a sensible choice on their end to keep the lights on and to deal with the fact that some of the third-party apps weren't free, and told everyone that they'd spoken with the developer of a very popular app, Apollo, and he'd tried to blackmail them for $10 million to "go away easy" when they just wanted a teeny tiny fee! The Apollo dev revealed that he had the receipts from the phone conversation (it's legal to record with one party's consent in his jurisdiction) and that he'd explained that the teeny tiny fee would cost him millions as the per-hit charge on the API was much higher than any other website's (except Twitter post-Elon, and you might recall that all the third-party apps and bots and websites that connected to Twitter via the API now don't do that because it's way too expensive) and had suggested reasonably that they just buy the app.
Realizing that they had a problem, Reddit announced an AMA with their wanky founder and CEO, Steve Huffman, /u/spez. The AMA drew immense interest, Huffman responded to a whopping total of 14 questions (while never actually answering the questions that were asked), and took the opportunity to cast aspersions on the Apollo dev as a liar and blackmailer that they just couldn't work with.
Now thousands of subreddits are planning to go private, lock to new comments and submissions, or some combination of the two as, essentially, a moderator strike.

Random question but i just started learning Japanese again (I did make an attempt a couple years ago but didn't learn much beyond the script and rudimentary vocab & sentences) and would love to know if you have any learning tips for a newbie! anything that helped you in your learning process is welcome!
(& are classes necessary or can it be done fully online & with books?)
My journey to learning Japanese has been full of fits and starts has been ongoing in some capacity since I was about 12, I think.
Anyway.
I did take a few classes in Japanese in college, which I think helped a lot: it taught me hiragana and katakana, which are just. Vital. And a few other bits and pieces. And then I let it rust over, because...well, college classes gave me some useful starting points, but it wasn't...a good way for me to learn a language.
When I picked it back up again, I had a few new things on my side:
Knowledge how to find and obtain Japanese content, both written and spoken, to actually try to understand
Friends! Who spoke! The language! And who could help me get over my terrible anxiety at actually trying to use it. And give me resources like recommending the dictionary I use and a couple of reference guides, and one even gave me her old class notes. I didn't really have friends to check in with on my understanding before, which made a lot of things harder.
Social media aka actually seeing people using the language naturally and not as a product of fiction. Super helpful in learning natural speech!
Etc.
I think if you have katakana and hiragana down, and some idea of how particles and grammar works, it's worth picking up some easy reading or kid's TV with a dictionary to see how accessible it is to you. If you can manage at least kind of, then that's a path you can take if it helps you. If not, you might need more formalized support to get to a place where you can self-learn.
It really all depends on how you learn, I think, and how inclined to languages you are, to figure out what you need.
Self-learning has been really, really good for me, but well. I'm that kind of person, and I'm the kind of person who grammar just. Makes sense to, hence my career field in "fixing people's grammar." And it's also fair to note in addition to Japanese classes, I took Italian in high school and my major program in college also included a number of grammar and linguistic classes to understand how...those kinds of things work.
So self-learning works for me, because of who I am and the basics I have in languages and grammar as concepts. This may not be the case for you, and that's fine! Classes or formalized programs can be really, really helpful for people who need structure or aren't good self-starters, none of which are bad things, but require different support.
Anyway, I hope some of this helps, and if not, I guess you can try asking again in a different or more specific way.
I've also talked about this a couple different times that might help?

Hello! I saw your post about IDs and found it super important and informative. Thank you for sharing!!
I have a question, if it’s no bother. Is IDing things with extensive detail better or worse than a two-sentence ID (or something similar)? I’m still learning and I wonder if cutting down would be a good idea, or if it’s not a problem to continue with longer descriptions? (Im also taking a ‘bad ID is better than no ID’ to heart, especially as I’m trying to ID art—something I’ve been avoiding because of its complexities. Overall you’ve really helped out and I wanted to thank you !!)
Thanks for asking! As this post puts it, people will have all kinds of personal preferences about the level of detail to include. I write what I consider to be kind of medium-length IDs, particularly when I describe fanart, but that's not like an objectively correct way to do it — so it's good to have a lot of different ideas and styles floating around out there, written by a variety of people.
Generally, it's best to err on the side of not too long — but if you want to write something a little longer, it might be appropriate if you mention the most important details first, so a reader can skip the rest of the ID once they feel like they get the picture?
Also, depending on the content of the post, the length of an ID might vary! If it's just a gif or something expressing agreement or disgust, with no other details relevant to what it's conveying or its humor, you can keep it short at "a person making X expression," or similar.
On the other hand, describing fanart, I get a little more into mood, color, and character outfits (still going in broad strokes, though). The exception is comics or other really complex/detailed art, which warrants a lot of summarizing. Occasional line breaks are important in this case so people who need IDs but don't use screenreaders can easily parse it.
One last thing — this isn't relevant to images that you're about to post, but when describing other people's posts, sometimes I look at the notes before writing an ID to see what aspects of an image people are commenting on. If I see a lot of people noticing and having an emotional reaction to some background detail in a piece of art, for example, then I'll be sure to mention it.

okay yeah so maybe Terezi doesn't really use screenreaders or braille because of sci-fi bullshit but have we also considered the watsonian explanation? If Alternia engages in bullshit eugenics trash (like we know they do, because Terezi and Karkat and Tavros bring up getting culled repeatedly due to their myriad medical issues), why the hell would anyone be funding development and creation of accessibility devices? Alternia is a bad place!! It's a constant warzone!! The Condesce is killing those she doesn't like and anyone who can't be a soldier in her forever conquest-- why would she also be putting money into ensuring that all computer software has screenreaders or accessible recuperacoons or stuff that might actually be useful to her citizens? This is Meenah Peixes, although an alternate version of her-- she's not gonna waste money on that!!
TLDR; Terezi doesn't use a screenreader because they're really hard to get on Alternia, because hellish endless warzones don't really like the fact that disabled people exist.

As a different method to indicate tone, mayhaps adding a whole word no slash in brackets? Like the (lying) thing but for all types of posts.
Example: "I'm sure you handled that situation too the best of your abilities! (Genuinely)"
Although depending on the screenreaders some people are using, perhaps writing it with a period instead like a sentence sounds better.
Example: "I know that show gets a bad rap, but I enjoyed it. Genuine."
Although because of the way sentence structure works on tumblr, what with periods being used to indicate speech pattern rather than finished thoughts necessarily, those might become misconstrued.
The best thing sounds like what I try to do in real life and say
"I think that dogs should always wear ballgowns. I'm joking!"
But like. That sounds fake af???
Of something applies to an entire post, #satire or #serious are cool, but I've definitely seen sarcasm used to illustrate a point in the middle of a serious post. I guess in that case method two works, but I feel conflicted about generally speaking.
This one's a thinker for sure.
The parentheses are what I generally prefer to use, but I don't really know enough about screen readers to know if that sounds okay.

hi! from the ask game:
3. are there any positive things that have happened to you due to your physical disability/disabilities?
5. do you use any type of disability aids? (compression socks / gloves, braces / orthosis, cgm, nebulizer, glasses, hearing aids / cochlear implants, screenreader etc.)
6. do you have any physically disabled friends? (both online and irl count)
14. what is the most inconvenient symptom you experience? (ex. unpredictable incontinence, sudden migraines etc.)
16. if you experience any type of chronic pain, what would you consider a “good” day on a scale of 1-10? and what is your normal on a 1-10 scale?
18. what is your favourite meal when you’re in a bad flare up, when complicated dishes might be hard to prepare?
hope you have a nice day!!
hiii thank you. ask game here
3. I think knowing other disabled people and getting into disability culture was very positive for me. this next one is both positive and negative but being unemployed. I can't work with my health as it is, and sometimes it gives me some freedoms that i didn't get when i was working. sometimes it's not good but you win some you lose some
5. i wear glasses but i don't consider them a disability aid... i have braces. i've used them for knee, ankle, and wrists but my wrist braces are the most used and my favourite. I've had some soft ones and some hard ones with an insert and i prefer the hard ones. i have compression socks but they didn't help me. i don't think it's necessarily a disability aid but my heated blanket is essential to me. heated blanket my beloved
6. yeah i have a bunch online. i had a couple offline that i mostly fell out of contact with.
14. there's a bADL (or two) that i struggle with and has Consequences. it's definitely the most inconvenient to struggle with for me because it's not something i can get help with. after that though it's migraines for sure. i hate those guys
16. i'm not super good at these sort of scales... because i never feel like my worst pain ever is a 10. surely there are worse pains out there. so thinking that i wouldn't label anything past 8, im usually at a 3-4 on a good day and 5-7 on bad days.
17. i don't have one... if i can't cook a meal usually i don't have a meal. i hate most take away foods and pre cooked meals so it's really just like. snacks. there's a sorbet i like to eat with berries if i have it if that counts
thank you for the well wishes. you too!

hi im here to talk about alt text and why you shouldn't misuse it and also why it's worse than not using alt text at all
please keep in mind that i am not blind or visually impaired whatsoever, and i do not (frequently) use a screenreader. please feel free to correct me if i get anything wrong
okay anyways, previously i had made this post. and then in response to that post i received this ask. i may have come off aggressive but quite frankly i actually think i was being rather polite
though, it did make me realize, i was rather vague in the original post as to what exactly alt text is, why misusing it is such a bad thing to do, and what exactly encompasses "misusing " it. so im going to talk a bit more about it.
i am tagging the mogai & edit communities because this is mainly where ive seen the problem of misusing alt text arise, as well these communities primarily rely on images in them, so i thought this would be useful for both
for those who don't know. alt text is an accessibility feature, as i've said before. more specifically it is for those who use screenreaders
if you don't know what a screenreader is, it's like. a voice that reads text on the screen. it's meant for those who are blind of visually impaired but it can also be used for other reasons (some of which i've heard are dyslexia, migraines, etc)
screenreaders cannot See images because they're not, like, Alive, so if they sense an image they usually just say something like "image" or "photo" or whatever. but you can add alt text which will describe your image and the screenreader can read that.
now there's not using alt text and misusing it.
not using alt text is not like encouraged but it's a passive action. or rather, an inaction. you're not doing something. there’s also usually at least a reason, such as your blog not being popular, not having spoons, etc.
misusing alt text is something you’re actively doing, likely just for comedy or for aesthetic. by misusing alt text, you are misleading people who use screenreaders, especially those who are blind or visually impaired. if you don’t use a screenreader, you might not think it’s that big of a deal, but people rely on these to, you know, SEE. if you misuse alt text you are feeding the screenreader and thus the person wrong and false information about what is on their screen. it’s just cruel. those who use screenreaders deserve to see the same things you see.
what exactly is misusing alt text, though?
basically, using it for any reason that isn’t describing an image. if you’re not describing the image, don’t touch alt text at all.
some ways ive seen alt text misused is to indicate credit for an image (so the alt text read someone’s url instead of describing the image). ive also seen someone use it to write… a bio. like, info about them. some people may purposefully describe the image in a way that is inaccurate for a joke, that is also misusing alt text.
if you are genuinely trying to describe an inage, that is not misusing alt text
anyways, hope this helped

Copying tags in accessible ways on mobile
(Large text: Copying tags in accessible ways on mobile)
People screenshot tags all the time, whether to share a funny joke or add important commentary, but they often don't realize that this is inaccessible to vision-impaired people and many others. This is a problem because a lot of people primarily use Tumblr on the mobile app, which doesn't let you interact with tags at all unless you screenshot them. However, accessibility is always worth the extra time and effort you can spare, so here are some ways for you to easily copy tags without spending too much of either!
Image-to-text softwares
(Large text: Image-to-text softwares)
If you simply must screenshot those tags, you can still convert them back into usable text! There are plenty of easy-to-use websites that allow you to take any downloaded image and extract the text from them. I prefer onlineocr.net, but the Google Translate app has the same feature! All you need to do is input the image and hit the button, and it'll spit out the text for you to copy. This method is fantastic for images with lots of text, not to mention it's easy to do and generally accurate, and I use it all the time to great effect!
Going to browser
(Large text: Going to browser)
If you're on mobile, it's probably a safe bet to say that your phone also has a browser app. If so, all you need to do to copy the tags from a post is copy the link of said post into a browser and then copy the tags from there. This method can mean extra formatting, since hashtags and links won't copy over, but it's relatively low-effort to do and doesn't take long at all!
Going on PC
(Large text: Going on PC)
If you're on mobile, you can also consider saving the post with desired tags to your drafts. This means you can easily access it on another device, aka a computer, and copy the tags there! Copying tags on desktop is possibly the easiest way to do it, since all you need to do is highlight the text and paste it later- it'll even save the link formatting when you do! The only extra step you might have to do is add spaces between the tags, since they'll automatically come smushed together and only separated by hashtags. This method might mean you take a little longer to reblog the tags, but it is very much worth it to make the post accessible to all!
Going forth
(Large text: Going forth)
These methods are a smidgen more effort than just screenshotting or prev tagging, but I don't think it's a bad tradeoff at all! I hope this can provide quick and easy ways for everyone to get more used to thinking more conscientiously about accessibility. And these aren't your only options- alt text helps people who use screenreaders, and you should always add an image description below screenshots if you're going to add them. Hope this helps!
TL;DR: Instead of screenshotting tags, which makes them inaccessible, other options are: using image-to-text software, copying the tags on a mobile browser, or copying them on desktop Tumblr.
