hello hello i am here with some abby x autistic! reader content bc i know i cant be the only autistic person obsessed with her. yes this is completely self indulgent.
i kinda just threw words on the page, but i hope someone out there will enjoy :)
it takes ages for you and abby to actually get together because you were entirely oblivious to her advances. during breakfast you had spent a solid thirty minutes talking about the different wildflowers that grew in north america and their significance in literature. abby thought your passion for the subject was sweet so while on patrol she picked some flowers that kind of looked like the ones in the pictures you showed her. when she presented them to you, your squeals of joy made her entire face light up.
“ah, thank you!”
you think nothing of it, assuming she was just being nice. you always assume she’s just being nice. so when you accidentally end up on a moonlit picnic date with her and she asks to kiss you, your eyebrows raise in confusion.
abby looks mortified “oh god, did i make things weird? i’m sorry.”
“no, no!” you reassure her. “i just…didn’t know this was a date.”
she could throw up on the spot. had she misread the situation? sure she never said the word “date”, but she told you that she wanted to spend some time alone with you. she brought you flowers, wine (if you could even call it that) that owen had been fermenting, and you two had been cuddling under the stars for the better part of an hour.
“you can kiss me.” your fingers fiddled with the stitching of the blanket beneath the two of you. “i would like that, actually.”
when you start dating you apologize profusely about all of your sensory quirks. you didn’t want to cuddle after she washed her hair because you hated the feeling of her wet hair on your skin. she kept separate blankets for you because you didn’t like the texture of the fabric on hers.
you nearly cried after the only time you snapped at her. someone was playing music in the mess hall, everyone was talking over each other, the smell and texture of the mushy broccoli was overwhelming, and abby was asking too many questions about your assignments for the day.
“please just be quiet for a second!” your tone had been a little sharper than you intended. abby looked hurt until tears welled in your eyes and you apologized over and over. you talked it over after dinner and obviously abby wasn’t mad at you (not that she ever could be).
after that, whenever she would play music she always made a point to ask
“is that too loud?”
and you absolutely hated patrol. all the yelling, the occasional gunfire, that god awful clicking. it was an overstimulating nightmare. abby often picked up your shifts whenever she could to save you the misery of leaving base. on the off chance that she couldn’t, she would always make sure a few pairs of ear plugs were in your bag.
you fight the need to vocal stim around people who aren’t her. it was a weight off your shoulders when you finally felt brave enough to explain it to her. at first, she just ignored them, growing accustomed to the empty noise. one day, when you’re softly meowing on repeat, she decided to join in. the two of you would meow back and forth until you erupted into giggles.
abby never made you feel weird about anything. sure, she had questions, but never in an invasive way. she just wanted to cater to and accommodate you as best she could. all because she loves you.
i may write more of this if people like it? i have a plethora of experiences to draw inspo from lmao

coffee talk - ellie williams
the late summer air might've subconsciously motivated ellie's walk that day, her relaxed demeanour acted as a foolish guise from her anxious thoughts. she usually waited until the last possible minute to leave for class, but something today was different.
maybe she hoped that if she walked around for awhile, her body and mind would tire themselves before class, leaving herself sleepy with concentration instead. maybe she hoped that her early start would somehow prompt a late arrival to class, giving her an excuse to just not go.
ellie sighed, squinting in the sun. it was too early in the semester to start that bad habit.
she came across a little campus cafe on her wander, quickly recognizing it as the one that dina had frequented. she hesitated briefly, trying to peer through the glass windows in a not obvious way. it looked relatively empty, compared to the usual crowd, so ellie dragged herself inside.
the air conditioning instantly hit her warm skin, causing goosebumps on her arms. a small group had claimed a table by a window, chattering away with laptops covering the table top. ellie wasn't exactly sure what she was looking for, and the line was pretty short, not allowing her much time to think. ellie lingered in the doorway, wondering how strange it may appear if she turned on her heel and immediately exited the establishment right after entering, until she heard possibly the sweetest voice to ever hit her ears.
"have a nice day," you regarded softly, handing someone their drink with a quick smile.
you were still relatively new at the job, fumbly and awkward with the interactions. your previous job had sucked. your co-workers were mean, you were paid basically nothing, and you were left with little time to complete assignments. your final straw was getting yelled at over the phone by your manager after calling off of work with the flu.
finally gathering the courage to quit, your friend had rallied you up to work at a campus cafe alongside her. the idea of that sort of work scared you, talking to customers, making drinks, but the pay was good and the hours were flexible. you put in an application and by the end of the week, you had started the training process. it was relatively comfortable, until your friend had suddenly decided to quit and left you alone.
"sorry," she had apologized weakly. "i think i might pick up doordashing or something instead."
you pushed out a quick sigh, drumming your fingers on the counter before plastering a smile on your face, moving to greet the next customer.
ellie craned her neck, trying to see the owner of the voice above the heads of the people that stood in line. once her eyes landed upon you, ellie sucked in a breath. she moved wordlessly into the line, no plan of action in mind.
she watched, dazed, as you entered orders and nodded. when you turned around to grab something and ellie spotted the bow that you were wearing in your hair, her palms began to feel warm. she strained her ears, desperate to hear your voice again above the sound of conversation and the typical coffee shop music.
ellie didn't even notice that there was another person, some guy, also behind the counter until he switched spots with you, greeting a different customer.
fuck, ellie thought, rapidly looking around to watch where you were going. you disappeared into the back, behind a set of secretive doors. ellie's heart sank. she would be up soon, and she didn't even know what she was doing. she didn't want to talk to some random guy.
she just... wanted to talk to some... random girl?
fuck.
someone else wandered into the cafe. ellie contemplated making that person's day, wondering if she should just leave the line. of course she should, this was stupid, but then you reappeared. you were carrying a small brown box, and huffed at a strand of hair that had fallen into your face.
ellie was almost up, and she rapidly began praying to any type of higher power that would listen. please don't let it be the guy, please don't let it be the fucking guy-
"hi," you greeted automatically, restocking a small display of reward punch cards. "what can we get for-" you finally dragged your eyes upwards, freezing at the sight of ellie.
your gaze widened and you mentally cursed yourself for having a horrible poker face. the girl standing in front of you was extremely attractive, to say the very least. you felt trapped in her green-eyed gaze, hand hovering above the cards that you were previously toying with.
ellie cleared her throat, shifting awkwardly on her feet. if anyone's voice matched their appearance perfectly, it was yours. you looked doe-eyed, caught off guard, and ellie's face flushed.
you blinked at the slight cough, snapping back into customer service mode. "what can i get for you?" you asked, pointedly changing the we to i. she had freckles. the smile you offered wasn't forced, but genuine.
fuck. fuck fuck fuck. she had to actually order something, not just stand there and stare at you. it was ellie's turn to be wide eyed, as she scrambled to pinpoint something from the menu. god. she really didn't want to be that person. you had all that time waiting in line, just pick something for christ sake!
you stood awkwardly, smile wavering as you waited for a reply. at least while the cute stranger was distracted by the menu, you could use the opportunity to stare.
mentally, ellie was a mess. she had held the skill of reading for the majority of her life now, but ellie couldn't make sense of a single word that was displayed on the menu. everything blurred together and she could feel your eyes on her as she scrambled for something to say.
"uh, what do you recommend?" ellie questioned, meeting your gaze. her cheeks burned when she noticed that you had winced. ellie wasn't being cute or friendly, she was being annoying. the last thing that you probably wanted was to rattle off a list of seasonal beverages you had been asked to promote. ellie mentally cursed herself, but you were stuttering for an answer before she could take her inquiry back.
"oh! um, well there's the..." you glanced over your shoulder at the seasonal drink specials, and ellie held back a grimace. poor fucking girl, she thought.
your face burned. you were still pretty new to the job, and honestly, penny pinching. despite the few that you've snuck during your shift, you hadn't tried many of the drinks yet. you so badly wanted to have a quick answer, something to impress her with your amazing taste. instead, you faltered, taking too long to answer.
"sorry," you laughed, shaking your head sheepishly. "i'm pretty new to this," you explained, ignoring the stare that you were getting from your co-worker. please don't ask to help me, you silently pleaded. despite the awkwardness of the interaction, you didn't want it to be cut short. you wanted to know if her freckles were always that visible, or if they popped out more due to the summer sun.
"that's okay," ellie said, a little too quickly. she looked down at the nametag that you wore on your apron. your name was written neatly, in your own style with a mix of cursive and regular letters. you had drawn a little flower next to your name.
"that board has some of our summer features though," you explained, finally regaining your footing. you nodded in the direction of a display board. "they're super popular, people really like them. i've tried the lavender one actually, it's super good. uh, we unfortunately don't get the pumpkin spice stuff in for... two more weeks, i think? so... i'm sorry about that," you quietly rambled, wringing your hands.
"pumpkin spice? it's barely september," ellie commented, wrinkling her nose. her attention was drawn to your nails, painted perfectly and neat. she wondered how big of a fool she would be making herself out to be if she attempted to flirt with you.
you shrugged, grinningly bashfully. "it's good," you resigned.
noted, ellie thought. i like pumpkin spice now. ellie opened her mouth to ask about the lavender thing, but the girl behind her in line obnoxiously cleared her throat.
ellie's eyebrows raised and you glanced apologetically at the other girl, who was tapping her foot.
"i'll be right with you," you commented. the girl scoffed and ellie's lips twisted at the sound. you were so sweet, wasting one of your pretty smiles on someone who didn't deserve it.
"yeah, no big deal," the girl replied sarcastically. "it's not like i have a class to get to or anything." she looked around the room, trying to garner support for herself, but no one was paying attention.
"i'll be right with you," you reiterated with a harsher tone. ellie fully blushed, feeling guilty for delaying the interaction. now you were getting backlash and your co-worker was completely eyeing you up, and ellie felt at fault for it. you met her eyes again, apologizing with a sad smile. ellie's grip on the strap of her bag tightened.
"sorry," ellie mumbled as her cheeks burned. "i'll get, um-"
the girl in line sighed again and ellie lost her train of thought, noticing that you were holding back your frustration with a tight smile. finally, a good idea emerged in ellie's head. she knew dina's order by heart. dina was certainly a creature of habit, at least when it came to her food and drink orders. ellie had heard dina order a million times.
ellie confidently allowed dina's coffee order to roll off of her tongue. you blinked in surprise as she gave specific directions, a direct contrast to how clueless she had seemed just a moment ago.
you frantically entered the order into the system, scared of making a mistake and looking dumb. "hey," you called softly, gaining the attention of your co-worker. you recited the order to him, to which he nodded in understanding.
"what's your name?" you asked politely. you grabbed a sharpie, waiting.
ellie's heart skipped a beat and she thought maybe she would have stood a chance, until she realized that you were asking for the drink and not because you genuinely wanted to know.
except, really, you did want to know. having to ask was just a perk.
"ellie."
"ellie," you repeatedly warmly. it was the best thing that ellie had ever heard. "i like it," you mumbled, grabbing a cup from a stack.
"thank you," ellie mumbled, watching as you wrote her name on the cup. your teeth pulled at your bottom lip in concentration, determined to use your best writing. once you had gotten to the second L, you looked up.
"oh," you realized sheepishly. "you can go wait at the end," you gently instructed her. ellie could've facepalmed herself for her stupidity, but didn't want to drag herself away from your presence. ellie wanted to say something more, but failed. she did, however, feel as though she had caused you enough trouble for the day. ellie gave you an awkward smile, as genuine as she could manage, before moving to step away.
once ellie had turned away, you realized your mistake.
"oh! wait!" you called, your voice louder than it had been all day. ellie froze, wondering if she had done something wrong or maybe you wanted to ask for her number.
the girl who was supposed to be next groaned.
"i'm so sorry," you whispered once ellie's body was in front of you again. "i forgot to have you pay," you muttered your confession, humiliated as your co-worker made a tsssk sound.
ellie thought that after this, she might drop out of college and move somewhere, maybe the country. somewhere far away from civilization.
"fuck," ellie swore under her breath, quickly rummaging through her bag for her wallet. "sorry," she said. you gave her the total, eyes lingering on ellie's tattoo while she swiped her card.
"um, do you want a reward card?" you asked, your voice sounding more robotic compared to before.
ellie was ready to automatically say no, but she took in the sight of your rounded cheeks and bashful smile.
"i would love one," ellie replied, and she felt as though her body jolted when your fingers grazed hers, handing over the card.
"if you buy nine drinks, the tenth one is on us!" you chirped, clearly haven gave this spiel before.
"jesus, nine?" ellie grumbled, and to her horror, your smile dropped.
"that's a great number!" she exclaimed awkwardly, scrambling to fix her mistake.
you nodded. "have a good day," you dismissed, and ellie's stomach lurched.
as ellie made her way to the end of the counter, she heard an exasperated "finally!" before you began to mumble apologies. ellie rolled her eyes. asshole.
when her name was called and she was handed her drink, ellie froze. her name, written pretty in your handwriting, punctuated with a doodle of a smile. her pulse quicked, and ellie wondered if she had always been this pathetic or if she had just gotten soft.
before she left, she turned around to give you one last look. you saw her heading for the door, and strained your neck to look at ellie once more before she was gone. you made eye contact, and ellie almost did an awkward half wave that certainly would've kept her up at night, cringing.
you tore your eyes away from ellie, mentally cursing yourself. but god, she was cute.
ellie shook her head discouragingly, once again met with the warm breeze of the afternoon as she stepped outside. she stared down at the little smiley on her cup. ellie frowned. she didn't really like coffee, but she also didn't want to throw it away. she heaved a sigh, holding the beverage as she began her trudge to class.
the doodled smiley carried ellie on a high throughout the entire day.
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧
ellie had come to find out that maybe, she wasn't particularly good at rationalizing with herself.
she figured that she would have a pretty good chance at seeing you again if she were to visit the cafe on the same day of the week and at the same time that she had previously seen you. she also figured that purposefully seeking out a stranger at their place of employment was pretty damn creepy.
when ellie passed by the cafe on her newly adjusted route to class, she craned her neck each time in hopes of catching a glimpse of you through the window. unfortunately for herself, ellie hadn't been so lucky.
if she had seen you, would she go inside?
mentally, ellie told herself no, but the answer was lousy.
maybe ellie would have, but only to try that lavender whatever drink that has been advertised on the chalkboard sign outside of the cafe. the flowers decorating the board looked a lot like the one doodled on your nametag and... did you draw them? was it your handwriting in purple, swooping letters that she saw now, nearly every day?
will power strong, but her delusion even stronger, ellie did not revisit the cafe and she did not have a crush on a barista that she met only once.
it was purely coincidental that exactly a week later, ellie left early for class again. she accidentally found herself walking the path to the cafe, and since she was so early anyway, ellie found no harm in stopping inside to get a break from the early september heat.
it was practically empty inside, so ellie's gaze quickly found its way to you.
you appreciated a slow day. the campus starbucks had finally staffed up enough to open for the semester, consequently stealing a lot of the little cafe's business. your coworkers complained and groaned about the matter, but you didn't mind. you sort of preferred it like this anyway.
the door chiming drew your attention instantly, and you were quick to recognize the auburn haired girl from the previous week. the sight of her made you grin, teeth on display before you had a moment to overthink it.
ellie's eyes were on you from the moment she stepped inside, and you noticeably faltered.
you weren't smiling right, so you straightened up your posture and dropped your eyes. you didn't want to smile too much, in a way that would be strange to greet a customer that you had only once before.
you pressed your lips into a tight smile. more formal, less i'm glad to see you again. i totally wasn't keeping an eye out for you during every single shift.
there was no line to restrain ellie today, and she sort of wished that there had been. a handful of seconds felt like ages as ellie shuffled to the counter. you were fidgeting, looking at ellie and then looking away.
ellie thought that she might be able to be confident today, swift and suave and just flirty enough to let you on to the idea that she could potentially be interested.
interested in what exactly, ellie wasn't so sure. she had girlfriends before, of course, and had admittedly flirted with her fair share of girls through time. obsessing over somebody random after one encounter though, that was new.
"uh, hey," ellie coughed. off to a fucking strong start, moron.
"hi!" you chirped, wringing your hands behind the counter. if you remembered her, and acted as such, would she think it was weird? what if you pretended not to remember her, but she did remember you, and then she thought that you were rude?
the sound of your voice filled a void that had been left within ellie since the previous week. the reaction it prompted within her was so fucking ridiculous that she deemed herself to be an idiot.
ellie did not have feelings for a barista that she saw once.
well, twice now, but still. no fucking thank you.
"what can i do for you?" you questioned, customer service manners causing your voice to raise in pitch.
there's a few things that you could- ellie scrunched her eyebrows with a pained expression, tearing herself away from the disgusting thought. jesus christ, what was actually wrong with her?
your smile never wavered as you waited, but your heart was racing. why on earth was it so awkward?
c'mon, fucking pull yourself together. if it goes wrong, you never have to show your face in here again, ellie thought.
"i actually wanted to try that drink you recommended last time," ellie said smoothly.
surprise registered clearly across your face, along with one blaring thought. she remembered you!
the second thought, the always displeasing afterthought, dropped like a weight in your chest. you were pretty sure the cafe didn't have the ingredients you would need.
you smiled anyway, (she remembered you!) giddy and nervous.
"the lavender one, right?" you questioned, and ellie was so in. you remembered the interaction, which might not mean anything at all, but it was better than being forgotten.
"right," ellie confirmed, nodding once with an easy smile.
"right," you repeated, and ellie instantly noticed the uncomfortable expression on your face. shit.
“um so,” you winced as you started, really not in the mood to receive the lashings of an unhappy customer. “i believe we are actually out of the lavender, i can go check in the back just to make sure if you want…”
ellie wanted to say no, that’s totally fine, you’re beautiful and don’t even worry about it, but her mouth tended to work faster than her brain.
ideally, she wouldn’t be opposed to a moment alone to compose herself, so ellie mumbled a quick “sure, that’s fine,” and tried not to be a creep as you turned and quickly walked away, disappearing behind a set of doors into the back.
you already knew there was no possible way that you could make the drink, and you already knew that there were no extra ingredients hidden in the back. you wondered if you could stay hidden and just not go back out.
"i am so sorry," you began, voice high and apologetic as you made your way back to your standing place. "unfortunately we don't ha-"
"that's fine!" ellie squeaked, crimson patching its way onto her cheeks. ellie thought that maybe she should buy you a drink, since it seemed like she only showed up to cause extra trouble for you.
ellie pictured it so clearly in her mind, asking whatever your favorite drink was and ordering it, only to give it to you instead. was that smooth, or lame? she imagined telling jesse and dina about it later and pictured them giving her praise instead of wincing in second-hand embarrassment, so it was game on.
"is there anything else i could get you?" you questioned, tugging at your bottom lip with your teeth.
"actually-"
"hey, excuse me, can i get an ice water to go?"
ellie quickly snapped in the direction of the person who interrupted her. a guy stood near a table in which he was previously sat, packing up a laptop and notebook.
"of course!" you turned away from ellie and she would have sworn that she felt her heart burst. "what size?"
ellie watched intently, jealous as you prepared the simple water cup. why couldn't she be an easy customer like that? what the fuck was wrong with her?
"sorry about that," you muttered sheepishly. your hand hovered over the cash register, still waiting to take ellie's order.
your nails were painted the same color as last time, ellie noted, but they were starting to chip.
"it's all good," ellie breezed, and suddenly remembered that she actually had a class to get to. she recited the previous coffee order without a second thought, thanks dina, and you nodded along intently. you weren't really great at remembering faces and their orders, but something in you made you want to memorize ellie's.
ellie paid (you remembered this time, but no co-worker was around to see it) and she held back a snort when you pulled out a little pink stamp pad.
"do you have your reward card?" you questioned, leaving ellie to look dumbfounded.
"my what?"
"the reward card? buy nine drinks, the tenth is on us?"
"oh! oh, shit," ellie fumbled for her wallet, making a sound of recognition as she pulled out the card. "of course i do," ellie remarked. you swallowed a giggle.
you stamped her card with the pretty pink ink and then began to make the drink. ellie mentally cursed herself for once again ordering something that she didn't like, but it was too late now.
"here you go!" you presented. you had wrote ellie on the cup, even though you technically didn't need to since no one else was around. ellie appreciated it anyway.
"thanks," she murmured, failing to meet your gaze.
"have a good day, okay?"
"you too," ellie remarked, holding up her cup in parting.
when she was outside and the fresh air began to clear her mind, ellie forbid herself from ever going back to that cafe. it was painfully and unnecessarily awkward, especially considering that she didn't know you.
still, her heartstrings were tugged as she stared down at the drink in her hand. last time, your co-worker had actually been the one to make the drink, so ellie didn't feel any guilt about pouring it down the sink.
however, you were the one to make it today. and you were so sweet, and ellie couldn't bear to just throw it away.
ellie gulped, staring at the cup with a grimace. she took a fast, quick sip, and then coughed into her arm so she wouldn't gag.
ellie still fucking hated coffee. but she finished off the drink, just because you made it.
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧
the next morning, ellie was up early with a mission. a study session with dina wasn't exactly the best thing to motivate ellie to wake up early, but an excuse to see if you were working definitely was.
ellie had no clue of your schedule except for the one day of the week that she had already seen you. it might have been a long shot, but fuck it, the least she could do was get dina a coffee on her way.
campus was quiet when it was early. ellie certainly preferred it that way. it was peaceful, the way the morning light projected a certain softness onto her surroundings. she knew the cafe was open this early, ellie had googled it about seven times the night prior and twice more in the morning to be safe.
to confirm the information once more, ellie could see the glowing lights through the window. it appeared empty, and ellie couldn't even tell who the person was inside until she entered.
"hi," you said almost instantly, and your tone made it clear that you were surprised.
"hi," ellie repeated, not being able to believe her luck.
you had been wiping a table, but you placed the rag down and moved to the counter as you continued to speak.
"you're really determined to burn through that reward card, huh?"
your joke caught ellie off guard, and her feet were carrying her before she told them to. ellie didn't even feel like a person yet, how were you making jokes so early?
"i'll be getting my free drink by noon," ellie retorted.
"ambitious, i like it," you laughed.
ellie was going to have a good day.
she didn't really give a fuck about the reward card, honestly, ellie would only use it if you were around. she was prepared on the off chance that you would be working, and caught you by surprise as she slapped it on the countertop.
"so what'll it be? your usual?" you questioned, tilting your head to the side.
ellie mentally cursed herself for hitting rock bottom, because receiving basic customer service shouldn't be having that effect on her.
"yeah, actually," ellie confirmed, looking flustered as her face dusted pink.
"perfect," you murmured, fingers dancing along the order screen. shit.
"um, shit," you laughed awkwardly, face burning. "i promise i know it but also could you like, remind me?"
ellie laughed because everything about you was so endearing and also because she didn't want you to feel embarrassed.
"for sure," ellie enthused, going through the steps of the order. as you tapped the screen, ellie noted that your nails were painted a different color today.
you were a little slower at making the drink today, not that ellie minded. it was peaceful, watching you hum as you did every step so delicately. ellie felt lucky to be the only person there with you, and then hoped she wasn't weird for having the thought.
the song playing quietly through the speakers above caught ellie's attention once she had noticed that it was the one that you were humming along to. the sound of the acoustic guitar got stuck in ellie's head like a daydream, your absent minded mutters filling the spaces of silence.
"oh man, i love this song," ellie gushed.
"yeah?" you looked up with a grin, pleased by ellie's comment. "me too."
perfect girl. ellie watched as you picked up a sharpie, turning your back to her.
"what other stuff do you guys play here?" ellie questioned, craning her neck to try and see what you were drawing on her cup.
"uh," you didn't think that you had ever been this concentrated on decorating someone's cup before. "anything, mostly. we play our own playlists, like, whoever's working, you know?"
ellie nodded, even though you couldn't see her. "this is yours?"
"my playlist?" you turned back around, immediately caught in ellie's green eyed gaze. "yeah! i don't play my own stuff much though, unless i'm here alone."
"i get that," ellie murmured, watching as you once again made yourself busy.
it was quiet just for a moment, until you handed ellie her drink. your fingers touched for just a moment but your pulse quickened. you hoped you weren't making things weird, but worried that you were by the way ellie dropped her eyes after the small touch.
ellie was silent while she payed, but only because she was trying to think of something more to say.
"hey," ellie said suddenly, causing your eyebrows to raise. "you didn't stamp my card," she complained.
"oops," you said, reaching for your stamp.
"i can't believe you're trying to cheat me out of a free drink," ellie stated, feigning fake shock.
"yeah, guess you'll just have to come back more," you responded through a laugh.
your joke sobered ellie's expression. the brief change made you freeze, and you couldn't decide whether or not the joke was incorrect. oh my god, you barely knew her. then again, it could have been passed off as just a joke about getting more business.
"guess i will," ellie agreed quietly, and your breath caught in your throat. was she joking or flirting? was there something, or were you sleep deprived and crushing on an extremely attractive girl that you barely even knew?
ellie felt satisfied with herself, though was determined to leave before she could manage to fuck anything up.
"thank you," she concluded, moving towards the door.
"anytime. see you soon for that free drink, right?"
ellie scanned your features and cracked a smile. "definitely. have a good one, okay?"
"okay," you sighed and then coughed awkwardly. "have a good day!"
after ellie had left, you slid down to the floor and covered your head in your hands. what the hell were you doing?
ellie quickened her pace to get to dina's, but after one glance at her cup she stopped short.
in black sharpie, you had drawn a flower and a little bee. and then, ellie's name in cursive.
fuck.
ellie looked back towards the direction of the cafe, wondering how creepy she might come off as if she were to march back in there and ask you out.
the doodle on the cup quite literally made her heart ache, and she stood indecisively on the sidewalk.
ellie had gotten this coffee for dina to be a good friend.
ellie also could not fucking stand the idea of passing this cup off to dina and then seeing it be thrown in the trash.
"fuck," ellie muttered.
whatever, dina could use her own fucking cup.
ellie would explain, sort of. maybe.
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧
"ellie, what the hell is wrong with you?"
dina's shoes slapped heavy against the pavement in a rushed attempt to keep up with her best friend. her hand reached for ellie's arm, a little aggressively, as ellie nearly shoulder checked some guy zooming past on a skateboard.
"huh? nothing," ellie dismissed, blinking around her surroundings as if she had never been on campus before.
"yeah? nothing? since when do you ever want to get a coffee," dina mocked the way ellie had proposed the plan earlier, earning a frustrated sigh from the auburn haired girl.
ellie shook her head, fixating her eyes on the little cafe that she was growing quite familiar (and fond) of.
"change of scenery would be nice," ellie grumbled. "come on, i'm being a good friend. you love this place."
"you're being so weird," dina muttered, stepping ahead of ellie to open the door.
the sudden chill of the air conditioning was a shock to ellie's warm skin. she tried not to look at you as she trailed in after dina.
"i'm gonna get-"
"let me," ellie interrupted, causing dina to raise an eyebrow. "how about you find us a seat and i'll order drinks, yeah?"
the environment was loud with orders and chatter, leaving little room to set up and study. ellie straightened her posture, appearing a lot more confident than she felt.
dina nodded, rolling her eyes with a grin. "i'll grab a table."
ellie waited until dina's back was turned to take a shaky breath as she pivoted to the ordering counter. there wasn't much of a line, only one person, though a gaggle of people waited off to the side for their names to be called.
you didn't notice ellie until she was in line, shifting on her feet and stealing glances that she probably assumed you wouldn't catch.
"hi," you chirped, gaining her attention.
ellie's gaze snapped upwards. she felt surprised to hear your voice, even though you were the sole reason for her even coming inside in the first place. the smile that graced your lips made her head spin, and she was suddenly all too aware that dina was probably watching her now.
"hi," ellie repeated, a little too meekly for her own liking.
"how are you?" you questioned, dropping any trace of your customer service voice.
"good now," ellie replied.
you raised a curious brow but smiled anyway, the presence of your ever growing favorite 'stranger' was exactly the type of break that you yearned for on a day like today.
there was no denying the silly way that ellie made you feel, no matter how much you argued it with yourself.
it wasn't typical of you to get butterflies while customers were ordering.
you relaxed your posture, grateful that there was a lack of impatient people lining up behind ellie. your co-worker was making drinks so you were free to chat, even just for a minute.
"what can i get for you?" you forced yourself to meet ellie's eyes, which you realized quickly was a difficult task.
looking in her eyes for too long made your head whirl. her gaze was so steady, so intentional, it honestly threw you for a loop.
when ellie began to recite the coffee order that you were expecting, you laughed a little and tapped away on the ordering screen and ellie's mouth felt dry with nerves.
"-and uh, a water. please," ellie finished, resting her hand and wallet on the counter.
"switching things up on me now?" you joked, shaking your head with a tsk. "just as i was starting to memorize it."
"gotta keep you on your toes," ellie quipped. if she leaned in closer, just a little, she could smell your perfume. "surely all your other customers don't give you enough of a hard time."
you smiled knowingly with a quick laugh, grabbing the card that ellie was now holding out to you. your fingers touched just briefly and ellie flushed instantly.
"you're totally the most difficult customer we've ever had," you deadpanned.
the humor was on ellie's caliber, and she had started it, yet your sarcastic remark instantly had her feeling guilty.
"right," ellie muttered, and she felt stupid because she knew it was a joke and you were only playing along and what did she expect, a fucking compliment?
"i'm kidding," you rushed, sliding ellie's card back to her. "you're like, the best one."
now ellie really felt like an idiot. she fumbled to return her card into her wallet and tried to ignore how warm she felt.
you smiled awkwardly and ellie wanted to believe that you were being sincere on a personal level, not just reciting some customer service bullshit. completely aware of the fact that she was overthinking it, ellie choked on a laugh. maybe she was just scarred from the trader joe's shopping experience.
"you say that to everyone," ellie recovered, her voice a lot smoother than she felt.
"oh," you disagreed, wide eyed. "pinkie promise. i like when you come in 'cause i don't have to worry about potentially being yelled at or like, verbally attacked."
ellie briefly contemplated making a stupid joke, but your twitchy smile made her heart ache and she wished that she could hang out in the cafe all day, ready to defend you from any asshole that comes in with an attitude.
"never," ellie responded, finally catching your eye. "i would never."
"i know," you replied softly, and immediately felt your face grow warm with embarrassment. why were you being so earnest? you didn't ACTUALLY know, anyway. but you wanted to trust those green eyes, so you did.
this is good, ellie thought. she wanted to say something else, maybe ask a question, but you pushed off the counter and clicked your tongue.
"i'll get you the water while you wait for your coffee," you said quickly, turning away and making yourself busy.
ellie's mouth snapped shut, her racing thoughts stopping dead in their tracks. she noticed that the bow you wore in your hair matched the color of your slouchy sweater and she had to get to know you.
pouring a water obviously didn't take as long as preparing a coffee, so ellie didn't understand why she seemed so caught off guard when you handed her the water.
"thanks..." ellie murmured. talking was usually pretty easy for ellie, considering how long she's been able to do it, so the fact that her mouth and words were drying up now had her about ready to tug at her hair in frustration.
"sorry," you smiled sheepishly. "i would totally make your coffee so you wouldn't have to wait, but i'm on register duty.. so..."
ellie noticed as you tapped your painted nails on the register and oh my fucking god, your nails matched your bow and sweater. how the fuck?
"that's okay, i don't mind waiting," ellie replied smoothly, and the words left her mouth before she could even process them. "as long as i can wait over here?"
here was referring to exactly where she was standing, at the counter with you. your cheeks burned and you nodded once, a silent reply.
"sure," you finally managed to choke out. "i don't blame you, it gets overwhelming waiting in crowds like that..."
fumbled. fumbled fumbled fumbled.
"uh, yeah."
as awkward as it was, you hoped it took a while longer for ellie's drink to be finished. she was cute, there was no sense in trying to deny yourself from acknowledging it. it's not like you were going to say anything, and if it made five minutes of your day more interesting, so what?
"don't tell me you forgot about the reward card," you teased, an easy fall back.
"never," ellie replied, but her eyes widened as she struggled to find it in her wallet. "shit."
you shook your head in disapproval. "and to think i just called you my best customer?"
"ouch," ellie mumbled. "i'll find it, i swear," ellie rushed, taking the idea of a stupid card much too seriously. she was well aware of the fact, but still. you were the one to give it to her after all.
you giggled at her strained expression and rose colored cheeks. "don't worry about it. hey, have you been to that coffee shop downtown?"
ellie's heartbeat quickened, and she wondered if you could tell based purely upon the look on her face. she was nearly ecstatic that you were genuinely talking to her, asking her something, and she wanted to deliver. it was a little deflating though. ellie didn't really love coffee shops, and she didn't want to provide you with an underwhelming answer.
"which one?" ellie inquired, loving the little smile that appeared on your lips before you answered her question.
"it's on the corner of main, on the inside it has this super cool v-"
"vinyl store?" ellie finished, beaming with excitement. "dude, i fucking love that place. i'm there like, every week."
"yeah?" you enthused, butterflies swirling your stomach. "me too! maybe we like... saw each other there before."
"i don't think so," ellie said instantly.
"i mean, you might've, maybe you just don't remember," you offered.
"i would've remembered," ellie replied seriously. she quickly wondered if her response was too cheesy, but you drew your eyes downward and tried to suppress a smile and ellie felt fine.
"fair enough," you mumbled, tracing shapes on the counter.
"so, do you collect vinyls or do you just-"
"did you forget my drink order or what?" dina joked, coming up behind ellie.
ellie shook her head, shifting awkwardly on her feet. shit.
"just waiting," ellie mumbled. she didn't know why she felt uncomfortable, maybe the idea of crushing on the barista at her friend's favorite coffee shop when she didn't even LIKE coffee but was suddenly spending all of her free minutes there, was, odd.
you recognized the girl next to ellie, dina. she came in pretty frequently.
ellie's name was called by your co-worker as her, no - dina's drink was placed on the counter.
"well, wait no longer," dina laughed, playfully shoving ellie away.
ellie glanced at you briefly before grabbing the drink, handing it off to dina with a cheesy grin.
oh.
oh.
the smile dropped from your face just as it felt as though your heart dropped into your stomach. you felt so stupid. especially considering all of the effort you had put into trying to make ellie's cups look cute, and they weren't even for ellie.
you watched as they sat down together and huffed out a sigh, startling as your co-worker tapped you on the shoulder to inform you that they were going on break.
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧
ellie couldn't stop thinking about you. she had avoided the cafe for a few days following your last interaction. she didn't understand why, but it made her feel guilty.
it's not like she even had a reason to feel that way. but hey, she was a loyal girl. if she decidedly had a secret crush on a barista that she barely knew, it was sacred!
the way that your demeanor had changed was stuck in ellie's head, and honestly, maybe it was making her a little too hopeful. the look on your face had to have meant something.
on the other hand, this was coming from someone who's idea of flirting was smiling while somewhat remaining eye contact.
seriously. seriously? fuck it.
ellie didn't like coffee anyway.
if she completely humiliated herself and ultimately freaked you out forever, she just wouldn't go back to the cafe! easy!
the sunlight covering campus was soft. it would be dark soon, and ellie felt exhausted after a long day of classes. she was well aware that this was definitely a long shot, but she had to try. she had been buying a lot of coffee lately.
please, please let it be worth something.
the sky was fading blue when ellie appeared upon the cafe. the sign on the door said CLOSED! but the lights were on and ellie could've fallen to her knees and screamed thank you to the universe because she could see that you were inside.
you didn't flinch when the bell on the door chimed, signaling its opening.
"we're closed," you stated without looking up, powering off a small machine.
"i know," ellie breathed, standing in the doorway.
you blinked, suddenly feeling flushed. you straightened your posture and waited, unsure what to make of the situation.
surely she wasn't secretly one of those people who were like, i don't care if you're closed, give me my damn coffee now!
you silently pleaded to the universe for that to not be the case. you already had a rough day as is.
"what do you want?" you asked, a hint of exhaustion in your tone.
everything in ellie's body wanted to backpedal. maybe she really did misread everything.
"um, i wanted to say.. uh-"
oh for fuck's sake. just say it.
"i wanted to say sorry?" ellie offered, false confidence leading her to the counter.
"sorry for what?" you questioned, wrinkling your nose.
"i don't like coffee," ellie blurted out. the absurdity made you laugh.
"that's.. okay?" you crossed your arms, raising an eyebrow at the green eyed girl.
"i've just been buying them for my friend," ellie continued, adding more emphasis than necessary to friend.
you pretended not to be delighted. "that's okay. it doesn't matter who customers buy their drinks for," you pointed out.
ellie swallowed a sigh. being referred to plainly as a customer (even though that's exactly what she was) was possibly the most devastating thing to ever happen in her life.
"i know," ellie replied, really amping it up. "i just wanted you to know. that i was buying them for a friend."
your heart was beating so quickly, you felt like a hummingbird.
"oh," you muttered, feeling stumped. "it doesn't matter what i think," you said quickly, looking at the floor.
"it does. i liked the bee. and the little flower. they were cute," ellie explained. her cheeks were completely red and yours were certainly warming up as well.
"thanks.. i thought they were cute too," you said softly, kicking your shoe at the ground.
"great. can i have your number?"
as the words left ellie she blinked heavily, startled by her own actions.
your brain turned to mush. you wanted to laugh but nothing came out so you just stared at ellie in silence.
"mine?"
ellie nodded.
"sure," you breathed, walking to pull out a pad of paper by the register. you retrieved a pen and wrote your number, followed by your name in cursive.
ellie waited in silence, holding her breath. you very easily could've just typed your number into her phone, but ellie found it incredibly endearing that you actually wrote it down instead.
"it's really nice of you to do stuff like that," you murmured, handing the paper to ellie. "buying coffee for a friend and all that."
"not entirely," ellie disagreed, forcing herself to meet your eyes.
you raised your eyebrows in question, and ellie shook her head.
"it wasn't exactly selfless."
"why?" you asked, a curious smile embellishing your features.
"i was only buying stuff so i had an excuse to come in."
you bit back a grin and leaned against the counter. "it's still nice of you to get something for someone else if you didn't like coffee... but why didn't you get like, a smoothie or tea or something?"
ellie didn't have an answer, you could tell by the look on her face and it made you laugh.
"what do you like?" you asked.
"i don't know? tea's fine. hot chocolate?"
you rolled your eyes, pointing to the menu above you that clearly had hot chocolate labeled as a menu item.
"so what? it's september." ellie wrinkled her nose in disgust.
"oh, you're one of those people," you observed, watching ellie's features contort into confusion.
"one of what people?"
"people who only drink seasonally appropriate drinks," you pointed out.
"i... guess?" ellie tried to hold a decent conversation, but she was still buzzing about getting your number and the way your perfume was the best thing that she had ever smelled.
"want me to make you something?" you questioned suddenly. "i bet that i can make you something that you'll actually like, and it won't be coffee."
ellie nodded immediately, but her words conflicted her. "aren't you closed?"
you shrugged, grinning at the girl standing opposite of you. "it's not a big deal. plus, it gets creepy at night. it'll be more fun closing up with some company."
ellie nodded once more, and she would absolutely stay for every single closing shift you ever had if you wanted her to.
you paced back and forth a bit, pulling out some supplies and flipping on some machines.
"what kind of tea do you like?" you inquired, peering over at ellie. "black? green? white? oolong?"
"the... fucking, brown kind?"
your eyebrows raised as you scanned her features, trying to determine whether or not she was joking.
ellie cracked an uneasy smile.
"do you like matcha, or do you think it tastes like grass and dirt?"
"uh-"
"right! i got it," you said decidedly, making yourself busy as ellie watched in confusion and wonder.
the tea that you made was simple, but not plain. it was earthy but not too bitter or dark, and it was a brighter flavor compared to coffee.
ellie chatted with you while you were busy, about majors and assholes on campus that drag their feet and take up entire walkways.
she was actually really easy to talk to, and funny too.
ellie was just glad that she didn't need an excuse to talk to you anymore.
"okay," you announced with bravado. "try this."
you placed the cup in front of ellie, and she hesitantly took a sip.
"it's totally fine if you hate it, there's zero pressure," you clarified.
ellie popped the lid off of the cup, smelling the tea before she took another drink. "it's actually really good," ellie enthused.
"really?" you beamed, feeling quite proud of yourself.
ellie frowned but her heart soared. it was, to ellie's taste, the perfect drink.
"really," ellie confirmed. "how much do i owe?"
you swatted her away, smiling slyly. "consider it your tenth."
ellie faked a gasp. "is that allowed?"
"for you, yeah." you thought for a moment, chewing on your bottom lip. "but will you please bring your reward card back sometime so that i can stamp it? i bought a bunch of cute stamps and i don't really get to use them 'cause no one ever-"
"absolutely," ellie replied seriously, eyes flicking over your face. this would possibly, definitely, be her best fucking semester yet. ever.
and her favorite cafe. and her favorite drink.
and her favorite barista.
ellie stayed with you while you finished closing, which was sweet.
together you made plans to go to the vinyl shop, after ellie asked if she could ever see you when you weren't on the clock.
you made ellie another tea for the road, but you spent extra time decorating the cup with frilly flowers, little animal characters, and ellie's name in your very best handwriting.
ellie would hold on to that cup, too.

Someone to take her home
Hey guys so I wrote this a while ago! This is a Henry one shot it an OFC because I'll die on the self insert hill! LOL it gives me so much comfort. Is that weird IDK. Anyway this story is kind of heavy. I wrote this to get out some feelings about an SA that I had experienced. I've always been someone that if I'm stressed I rewrite the situation with a comforting outcome or a better outcome to release the stress or make myself feel better. I wanted to sort of write myself a way to get some comfort from the trauma. And I hope having a character like this sweet soft version of Henry may help some of you too. I never reached out for myself for help and maybe I should have but if you experienced something please talk to someone. If you need someone to talk to or just want a place to let it out my DM's are a safe space <3 Just as disclaimer this doesn't mention any of the actual situation that happened to me. Just a filler to get out the emotion. Still this is a fluff with lots of love and sweet gentle young Henry bc I just know in my soul this was and is how he is as a person!
Warnings: Light Cursing, Trauma, Mentions of sexual assault. (Please reach out for help even if it's just talking to someone about your situation. My DM's are open if y'all wanna talk after this <3)
Description: OFC goes to college party and meets Henry and they become fast friends. and he helps her when things turn bad with a guy he warned her about.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I stared at myself in the mirror one more time. I needed to leave soon. If I looked any longer I would find something I hated and talk myself out of going. So I grabbed my bag and turned off my bedroom light. Nervous didn’t begin to describe how I was feeling. I’d never been to a party like this before. Sure I’d been out a few times in high school. But it was usually theater cast parties. And one time my friend and I stole some captain morgan from her parents liquor cabinet. But this was on an entirely different scale.
Most of my drinking was a night in with the girls with wine or movie night drinking games. God I sound so boring. It’s not that I don’t enjoy partying. I was genuinely excited to be invited out tonight. Lilly and I had worked together for a few assignments in class. And we would say hi when we ran into each other in the dorms. But, I never expected to get a text this afternoon inviting me to her boyfriend's party. Purdue was an incredibly large campus. Upwards of 40,000 plus students. Yet somehow Lilly’s boyfriend Riley Hardesty seemed to know everyone. He was known for throwing huge parties all year. They weren’t exclusive. You could just be driving through the neighborhood and stop in. But she told me a friend of Riley’s had asked her about me.
Matt Parker. I know of him. He’s in my English 204 lecture. But we’ve never talked. But he is really attractive. So maybe something good would come from all of this! I decided just to walk as my dorm wasn’t far from the house Riley and his roommates lived in. It was a cool night in mid october and I was definitely regretting the little black denim skirt I was wearing. I was smart enough to wear a cardigan but it was still cold. Thank God it's only 2 blocks down. I bit my lip nervously. Am I even going to know anyone here? Anyone I actually talk to? It’s too late now. I already got dressed and ready. I walked here. I have to go through with this.
I took a deep breath and walked inside. Things were already full swing. I could hear the music outside before I even opened the door. No one seemed to notice me and honestly I was okay with that. I looked around scanning the room. Almost everyone had a drink in hand, standing around in groups talking. The smell of pot hit me immediately as I started to walk through the house. I wasn’t the least bit surprised. I made my way to the kitchen where I found multiple drinks, alcohol and mixers available. I kept it simple and grabbed a wine cooler. Something fruity. I was definitely going to need a buzz if I was going to be here longer than 5 minutes.
I pushed my way out of the kitchen and found a quiet corner to drink and observe for a while. I was busy listening to some guys talk about last weekend's football game when I heard someone’s voice. And I realized they were talking to me. I shifted my eyes seeing a guy standing next to me. He was maybe 6’1, blue eyes, and brown hair with soft curls. I gave him a gentle smile,
“I’m sorry, what was that?” I asked. He smiled and chuckled softly. His smile was beautiful.
“I uh, Just noticed your shirt. Are you a Def Leppard fan?” He asked. I looked down. I completely forgot that was the shirt I was wearing. I just thought a band t-shirt would look cute with the skirt. But
“Yeah! Well I know a few of their songs! My Mom was in her 20’s in the 80’s and she loved them!” I said.
“She has good taste! They’re awesome! Are you here by yourself? Not trying to be creepy I just noticed you were by yourself over here and I wanted to make sure you were alright,” He rambled. I nodded.
“I look that out of place huh? Yeah, I um. I’m friends with Riley’s girlfriend. Well not friends necessarily. But I know her. Anyway she invited me because of some friend of Riley’s but I don’t know this isn’t normally my scene. Wow that was a lot,” I blushed. “Sorry,” I mumbled.
“For?” He smiled, raising an eyebrow. “We’re talking. I like getting to know people! And I totally get it. This can kind of be a lot sometimes. I actually came with some friends but I needed to step away from all the crazy for a second. I’m Henry by the way.” He smiled, extending his hand. I took it and He squeezed mine softly.
“Alayna!” I said.
“It’s nice to meet you!” He smiled. “Which one of Riley’s friends? If you don't mind me asking,” He raised an eyebrow.
“Matt Parker,” I said bluntly. “You know him,” Henry took a sip of his beer and nodded.
“I do, He’s alright. We’re sort of friends I suppose. He may have good intentions. Listen, I know you don’t need my advice, but just be careful around him. I don’t know what you were expecting with him or hoping for. But he can be a little, well, if I had a daughter I wouldn’t trust him with her. But I could be wrong. I’m sorry, that was a bit much. I don't want to ruin your evening,” He said.
“For?” I smirked copying his face from earlier. “You seem to have pure intentions. Just looking out for someone. That’s really kind of you actually. I honestly don't know what I was expecting. But I can handle myself. I didn’t really come out tonight for him. I wanted to actually let loose and have fun for once. I’ve been trying to have more adventures, meet new people, make new friends.” I smiled looking him in the eyes on that last part. He gave me a big smile and held out his beer bottle to cheers me.
“To new friends,” He spoke and we clinked our bottles together. “I like you, I mean talking to you.” He said.
“I like talking to you too! I was honestly super anxious about coming tonight. I was worried I’d be too anxious and awkward to have fun or it would be too much. Because this is a lot. I’m 100% sure I saw someone do coke off the kitchen counter. But I’m actually enjoying myself. Right now anyway.” I laughed. Henry chuckled.
“Good! Well, I’m going to go find my friends but, what's your number? I’ll send you a text real quick and if you get overwhelmed or uncomfortable or need to escape all of this for a bit come find me! Or text me. I’d be happy to be there for you. And we can just chill out for a while.” I smiled and gave him my phone number. It was nice to meet someone as kind as Henry. You don’t meet a lot of people that… genuine and gentlemanly in places like this. He gave my shoulder a gentle squeeze before he walked off to find his friends. I wandered off to get another drink while I was standing in the kitchen waiting to grab another wine cooler. I felt someone lay their arm across my shoulder.
“Hey gorgeous,” I recognized Matt’s voice. I gave him a soft smile.
“Hi,” I spoke.
“I’m glad you came tonight, You having a good time,” He asked, clearly buzzed.
“Yeah,” I said tentatively “One hell of a party!” I laughed.
“For sure!” He smiled and moved to the side of me taking his arm off my shoulder. “What are you drinking babe?” He asked.
“Just Mike's lemonade.” I chuckled awkwardly.
“Aw come on girl you can do something stronger than that huh?” He joked. I shook my head.
“I probably could but I’d rather not get sick.” I said.
“Aw well come on at least do a shot with me?” He asked, giving me a puppy dog face and pouting. “Just tequila, we got training wheels!” He added.
“I don’t know… I don’t wanna get too crazy,” I said.
“Nah, it’ll be alright, it’ll just loosen you up a bit!” He spoke already pouring the shots. He slid one over to me. And a piece of lime. “Ready?” I picked up the shot and stared at it questioningly.
“Alright,” He smiled. We clicked the glasses and hit them against the table before taking the shot. It was super bitter. I immediately followed it with the lime. But it didn’t help much. When I looked up again Matt had gotten me another Mike’s from the cooler.
“Atta girl!” He smirked. He took a step closer and I took the drink from him. Then I heard someone call his name from across the house. They were starting another game of beer pong. “That’s my que babe, but wait for me yeah? I’ll come back to you after this game!” He smirked and left a wet kiss on my cheek before running off to join the boys.
Charming is certainly not a word I would use to describe him. But he’s nice. And he’s just trying to make sure I have fun. There’s no harm in that. I wandered around the party again. I opened up my new bottle and tossed the cap on a nearby coffee table. I thought about watching the beer pong game but I honestly wasn’t interested. I found the door leading to the backyard and saw there was a bonfire going. I stepped outside and found an empty seat by the fire. I watched it crackle for a bit and took a long sip of my drink. I felt a warmth inside me and knew it was coming from the alcohol. I started to relax as I listened to the fire and the white noise of the people chatting around me. It was a gorgeous night.
“Hey!” I heard a voice from behind me. “Funny meeting you out here!” Henry spoke, pulling up a chair next to me.
“Hey!” I said excitedly. “It’s calm out here. I like it!” I said. Henry smiled.
“I do too, I love a good fire. Fuels the soul.” He half joked.
“ I love the smell! Is that weird?” I laughed.
“No,” He chuckled softly “Not at all! So, besides the band on that very cool shirt, What other music do you like?” Henry asked, leaning back in his chair and taking a long swig of his beer.
“Oh all kinds. I’m a big lover of the stuff from the 70s though! Elton John, Heart, the Beatles, I guess they’re technically 60’s. I know it’s kind of old school but. I feel like they just don’t make music like that anymore.” I explained.
“Classic! I like it,” He smiled.
“What about you?” I asked.
“Oh I’m all over the place too. I’m actually a big country fan!” He smirked.
“I wouldn’t have expected that from you but I respect it. It’s not my favorite genre but there are definitely some good ones there!” I smiled. Henry and I chatted for a while. We talked about our majors. He's a history major. Where we’re from, he has an accent but I didn’t want to ask and be weird about it. He told me he’s from the UK. We talked about books, history and our friends. It was nice. A little while later I felt an arm around my shoulder again. I knew it was Matt.
“There she is! Did you think I forgot about you babe?” He asked.
“No,” I smiled blushing softly. He smiled.
“Hey Henry! Are you having a good time, man?” He asked. Henry nodded and finished his beer.
“Yeah! Actually I should go get another one. It was nice talking to you Alayna!” He smiled at me before he got up and left. I don’t know why but I could tell Henry wasn’t the biggest fan of Matt. He said they were friends earlier but I think he was just trying to be nice
I was shaken from the thought when I heard Matt’s voice again.
“Hey, follow me!” He said enthusiastically.
“Okay,” I smiled. I got up and followed him back inside. He led us upstairs and down the hall to what I assume was his room.
“Too many people out there, I wanted to be alone with you,” He smiled.
“That’s really sweet! It is pretty crowded.” I said.
“Yeah,” He said blankly. “Are you enjoying the party?” He asked.
“I am,” I said half telling the truth. I enjoyed talking to Henry.
“God you’re so gorgeous,” He said. “I always want to talk to you in class but you always leave so quickly I never get the chance.” He said.
“Thank you,” I blushed.
“Can I kiss you?” He asked. I don’t know if I wanted it or if it was the alcohol but I nodded. He smirked and leaned in kissing me on the lips. It was gentle at first but then he quickly started using tongue. I felt kind of awkward. So I backed away. “Oh sorry, you okay?” he asked.
“Yeah,” I lied. He just nodded and went back to kissing me. I kissed him back a bit but then I felt him start to feel me up. I froze. I really didn’t want that. He moved his hand under my shirt and I stopped him.
“Uh Matt, I really don’t know about this.” I said nervously. He pulled back
“It’s fine, nobody's gonna come in, don't worry about it.” He said and started kissing my neck. Oh god this sucks.
“No I mean. I don’t… want to do this.” I stuttered.
“Come on, it’ll be fun babe, it’ll be alright.” He kept feeling me up and continued kissing me. I felt stuck. He pushed himself against me, grinding into me. He moaned. I swallowed hard. Fuck, I really didn’t want this.
“No, Matt, I really don’t want to.” I said again.
“Shhh just go with it.” he said, shushing me. “You’ll enjoy it, I promise.” He said, sliding his hand under my skirt and rubbing his fingers against me.
“No, stop Matt,” I said again, my voice quivering. He was definitely stronger than me. He used his other hand to take himself out of his shorts and he grabbed my hand putting it on him while he kept touching me, forcing his fingers inside. It hurt. I don’t know how but finally I found the strength to push him away from me. He stumbled back and fell against the bed and I ran out of the room. I could feel the tears stinging in my eyes already but I had to get out of this house. I quickly ran down the stairs and out the front door. Matt was pretty drunk so I don’t even think he tried to follow me. I walked a little way down the street and stopped letting out a sob. What the hell just happened. How did I let that happen? How could I have been stupid enough to trust him or follow him? I didn’t know what to do. I probably should have headed back to the dorm but I didn’t want to be alone right now. I took to my phone trying to think of who to talk to.
I saw I had a text. It was Henry. “Hey it’s me! Henry I mean lol feel free to text me anytime.” I sent him a quick text taking a deep breath and trying to pull myself together. I didn’t want him to see me like this. I was so stupid. He tried to warn me.
“Hey, it’s Alayna, where are you?” I sent it. To my surprise he responded almost immediately.
“By the fire, You okay?” it read.
“Would you wanna go on a walk with me?” I asked. There’s no way I could go back there.
“Sure :) where are you?”
“On the front sidewalk like 3 houses down toward campus.”
“Be right there!” true to his word about 2 minutes later I saw him walking down the sidewalk toward me.
“How are you?” He asked.
“Good,” I nodded absentmindedly.
“Were you leaving?” He asked.
I um,” I stuttered “Yeah, it was just… too much. I was gonna head home. I feel stupid I was just gonna walk home. I'll be fine, I’ll let you have fun. I don’t wanna interrupt your night.” I rambled.
“No! Please do! I’d be happy to walk you home. Talking with you was the most fun I had tonight actually.” He stated simply. I smiled weakly.
“I’m glad.” I said.
“Are you alright?” He asked me. I sighed trying not to get emotional.
“Yeah, just a little overwhelmed and tired.” I lied. We walked in silence for a bit. I couldn’t believe how kind he was. The fact that he would leave his friends to walk me home. He was genuinely concerned about me. That feeling made me even more overwhelmed and finally after everything I could help but start crying. I felt like I had no control over my body as I started to sob. I felt my shoulders start to shake. Henry stopped and put his hands on my shoulders.
“Alayna what's wrong?” He asked me. I tried so hard to speak.
“He wouldn’t.. And I said… no, but he kept…” it all came out in broken sobs. Henry didn’t say anything. He just pulled me into him and hugged me tightly. After a few seconds. I started to calm down and tried to steady my breathing.
“Shh it’s alright, just breathe.” I heard him say. I slowed my breathing. “Did he touch you?” He asked gently, trying not to upset me again. I couldn’t speak, I just nodded. Henry went stiff. I looked up and saw his jaw was clenched. “Mother fucker,” He mumbled quietly under his breath. Then he spoke louder “Do you want to go talk to someone? Like report it?” He asked. Again his voice was gentle. I shook my head.
“I can’t, I know I should but I really can’t, not now.” I said. He nodded.
“Okay, well let's get you home.” He said. I started to walk again. Henry kept an arm around me as we walked. We were quiet the whole way there. He walked me all the way to the door. Wanting to make sure I got in okay.
“Thank you,” I said. But just as he turned to leave I grabbed his hand. “Wait, please don’t go.” I said, trying not to sound desperate. Not that I had the energy to care.
“You want me to stay?” he asked. I nodded.
“Yeah, no, I .. I don’t .. You don’t have to, I’ll be okay.” I said.
“Hey,” He paused, grabbing my hand. “It’s okay, I don’t mind.” So I took off my shoes and slipped into the bathroom to change into some shorts. I laid in my bed and Henry sat next to me. “Do you want to watch something?” He asked. I nodded. And turned on my TV scrolling aimlessly. I stopped on some old 90’s sitcom.
“Thank you, for staying,” I said.
“You shouldn’t be alone right now. And I meant what I said. I had more fun talking to you tonight than with anyone else.” He smiled sympathetically.
“I did too,” I said. I sat up going to kiss him but he stopped me.
“Not tonight, darling. Believe me I would love to kiss you. But I think you’ll regret it later if you do this now. I like you. I’m not going anywhere. Let's take this slow. You’ve been through a lot tonight. I’ll still be here when you’re ready. But I think tonight you need to rest.” he said. The universe gave me Henry tonight. If I hadn’t ran into him. I’d have been alone after being sexually assaulted by a guy I barely know. Any other guy wouldn’t have treated me like him. He was so gentle and respectful. He was genuinely looking out for my best interest when he could’ve taken advantage of my vulnerability. I just nodded.
“I’m sorry that was stupid.” I sighed.
“No, it wasn’t” he put his arm around me pulling me into his side and I naturally rested my head on his chest. “You don’t need to apologize. Try to get some rest.” He spoke gently. I could hear his heartbeat and my breath slowed to match the rhythm. Eventually so did he. I looked up to find him asleep with his arm still around me. I settled in snuggling into his side. All the noise around me slowly faded away and I finally got to rest, falling asleep in Henry’s arms.
Play For Me. Please.
Ominis Gaunt X Musician! MC! Hufflepuff! Reader
A cute little drabble. E for Everyone. I gave into the urges. Basic stuff. You can play instruments and you sing like a angel. Basic Fanfic stuff lol
The song used is I Hear A Symphony- Cody Fry
Ominis never had the best childhood. He was always a puppet used by his mother. He has grown tired of this fate he was forced into but, he would have to solve this problem after he has graduated Hogwarts.
His Fifth year so far has been very eventful in his book. Sebastian friended the newest student, a late fifth year.
The fifth year and Ominis didn't have the best start to your friendship. He misunderstood your intentions and soon let you into his little circle. You gained the trust of Sebastian and Anne. Ominis didn't fully trust you but, he was slowly becoming more and more comfortable with you.
When you started at Hogwarts, you were sorted into Hufflepuff. Honestly, he and Sebastian thought Slytherin would have fit you better with all the trouble you seem to attract. But, when it comes down to it, you didn't fit into any house. You had every aspect of all the houses. You did show more Hufflepuff traits at times but, they really just wish you were sorted into their house so they could be with you more.
Ominis and Sebastian would spend all of there free time with you, of course, when you weren't on some assignment. Everyone in Hogwarts always saw the three of you together, be it breakfast, lunch, dinner, in the halls, class, etc.
As time went on, Sebastian soon deep dove into books and into searching for a cure for Anne. You both understood what Sebastian was trying to do and Ominis didn't want anything to do the the Dark Arts. You, on the other hand, were slightly enticed with the forbidden. You learned a number of spells just to know how to do them.
But, no matter how hard you tried to be there with Sebastian to go down the road he was traveling, you couldn't and he was straying farther away.
Soon enough, It was just you and Ominis. You keep getting brushed off and only talked to do things for Sebastian's benefit. With the distance, the two of you became much closer, to the point of Ominis revealing his past to you. You did the same. He seemed to become more and more reliant on your presence. He'd hate to admit it but, he has grown fond of you. He hates the idea of not being independent because of how far he has come in his life but, he loves you more than his independence.
You, on the other hand, has always been fond of Ominis. You found him to be very attractive and loved his eyes. They may be murky to others but, to You, you can see so much more. You love it all.
You found yourself alone one day on the castle. Ominis was in class. You sat nearby, bored out of your mind. A group of students walked by but, what they said peaked your interest. Hogwarts has a music room somewhere? You love music so, this peaked your interest.
You stood up and walked to one of the many portraits on the wall if they knew where it was. They pointed you in the right direction. The portraits and such in the castle really like you for some reason. You then asked the portrait to tell Ominis where you went when he got out of class for you. Of course, being courteous to the portrait. They agreed and off you went.
After a short walk, you found the music room. Some ghosts played with the instruments, other than that, you were alone. You saw a beautiful grande piano sit in the middle of the room. You saw a violin resting on it as well.
You walked closer to the piano in amazement. You haven't played an instrument since you cam to Hogwarts. You were so happy to find a room to play in again.
You sat down in the bench. You pressed down the pedals and play a few cords. Getting the familiar feeling of the keys. You shook the jitters out of your hands before clearing your throat.
The room soon seemed to pause the chaos of musical noises as the Hufflepuff girl began to softly sing,
I used to hear a simple song That was until you came along Now in it's place is something new I hear it when I look at you
After her first chorus, her hands began to cascade across the ivory keys. Her eyes closed as she started to feel the music flow through her. She pressed the pedals as she played the cords.
On of the ghost ladies gasped and whispered to the people around her. They flew to grab some stringed instruments. It was like it was rehearsed. They slowly joined the young girl in her song.
With simple songs I wanted more Perfection is so quick to bore You are more beautiful by far Our flaws are who we really are
She played with her heart opened and her eyes closed. As the song progressed, she didn't hear the door to the room gently open. Ominis made it just in time for the second chorus. He took the chair next to the door and listened to your angelic voice fill the room. His wand made out a slight picture for him to "see" what was going on. He knew you were playing the piano and the ghosts were playing the strings. He sat in awe as he listened to you.
I used to hear a simple song That was until you came along You took my broken melody And now I hear a symphony Ah-ah oh-ooh-oh ah-ah
Your hands became more dynamic and your motions became more filled with emotion as the end of the song came closer. Everything sudden paused, Y/n slowly opened her eyes and sang the last part of the song,
And now I hear a symphony
You finished the song. You felt eyes on your back. You turned and saw Ominis sitting there. You suddenly felt very shy,
"U-um, Ominis. I expected class to be a but longer?"
Ominis gave you a grin,
"We were released early. Who was the song for?"
He slowly stood up and made his way over.
You turned back to the piano and play some notes. Your face reddened,
"O-oh. You know. A p-person I know."
Ominis sat on the bench next to you. He turned to you,
"Do I know him?"
You nodded slightly. Ominis knew it was for him but, he wants you to come out and say it. So, he'll keep prodding until you admit it. He softly whispered to you,
"You're are more beautiful by far, Our flaws are who we really are."
You looked towards him,
"You are beautiful to me. Your flaws don't matter to me. It makes you more beautiful to me."
Ominis smiled and moved his hand to yours. He held your hand as you looked at him in surprise. He moved his other hand to your face and traced your lips with his thumb. He then leaned in and kissed you softly. You both were blushing as he kissed you. Once you parted, you sat hand in hand and forehead to forehead.
Ominis whispered softly,
"I'm in love with you. Please be mine."
You smiled,
"Of course. I'm in love with you too."
He squeezed your hand once more,
"Play for me. Please."
You giggled and slowly released your hands. You turned and started to play some more cords and songs you know. Ominis just sat with you and leaned his head on your shoulder with his arm around your waist. Finally, the fire can finally burn between you two. Nothing will be able to split you both apart, Not in a million years. Ominis will fight to protect this special connection you two have formed. He will protect you all that he can. He loves you and you love him.
Janitor AU (Ambush Part) a1 d2
[Caution: These are not full fics, or even full parts of fics for some, these are part of my writing progress archive!]
Concept: Reader is a member of the cleaning staff at JYP. With a decent history of managing to avoid the idols on staff, Reader keeps to themself and keeps their head down. A chance encounter with SKZ in one of the practice rooms may change that...
Word Count: 1,293
Notes: LMAO Just saw that I already posted this and just didn't put it on the ML. RIP. I'm keeping this one instead of the old one <3
I remember spitting this out really fast and then hitting a dead stop and hating everything about it. Not sure what that was about, it's a pretty standard first attempt for me. Not feeling editing notes rn, so just. have at.
This was pretty heavily inspired by a BTS fic on Ao3 that was MUCH smuttier and about a Brat, but I can't remember the name anymore. If it reads as familiar to anyone, will you please tell me what it reminds you of? I'd love to give proper credits.
Original Notes: This is the first one that really looks like the w.i.p it is lol. The beginning is super awkward and I'll probably redo that entirely. This concept is inspired by another fic, but I'll have to hunt it down bc I can't find it rn. I saw that one and went "I want that but without the smut" and so I wrote it lol. This one needs a lot of work, but I probs got frustrated bc it looks like I left off in the middle of sentence lmao.
Warnings: None that I know of?
Masterlist link |
You hum lightly to yourself as you pull your hairband up from where it rested around your neck and push your hair out of your face. You double check that you have the appropriate ‘cleaning in progress’ and ‘wet floor’ signs up and turn to hijack the sound system every practice room was equipped with.
This was the most envied privilege of your assigned areas - you got to blast your music loud and proud as you cleaned instead of hoping your headphones can go loud enough to be heard over your machines without bursting your ear drums. It was envied in your opinion anyways. You wouldn’t trade areas for anything, even if the stink of sweat was overpowering sometimes.
You can’t help your amusement at the thought that there were some fans of the idols you worked for that would adore having to smell their stank every day. It was just an occupational hazard for you, though.
You’re sure being janitorial staff is no one’s dream, regardless of which building you happen to be cleaning. It works for you, though. You wouldn’t say it had been remotely in your life plan to be scrubbing huge mirrors, or airing out the smell of sweat from the JYP practice rooms, but you enjoyed the peace it allowed you.
Two years out of college, with an unrelated degree, in a country you’d never dreamed of moving to, and you still wouldn’t trade it for the world. The twists and turns of life that had lead you here hardly mattered anymore.
Besides, you don’t see the idols as much as you’d assume for someone who cleaned their practice rooms for a living. It was another privilege of yours, if anyone were to ask your opinion. Not that anyone asked you much of anything, aside from your supervisor. Your quiet existence as just another cog that kept everything running smoothly was soothing to you.
You could be loud and take up space outside of work. Not that you really did, but you could if you wanted to. Maybe you should. You were still virtually friendless a year and a half after getting this job. You only really spoke to your coworkers, and barely at that. Your homebody tendencies continue to sabotage your social life.
You had plenty of online friends, it was fine.
You’ve digressed. No idols equals privilege of your area. Right.
You knew several of the newer folks spent a few weeks after their hire giggling to each other when they got to see the idols just casually hanging around and doing their jobs, but you’d avoided them from the start.
At first it was just because you were shy and many idols had a bit of rbf going on. You’d been incredibly intimidated by both their beauty and their success, and your Korean hadn’t been as eloquent as you’d have liked it to be. By the time you’d spoken to enough trainees to relax around the idols, you’d still been unsure with your Korean. And then when you’d gotten that in order it’d been so long you simply felt awkward.
You’d been working in the building for a year and a half and had done a spectacular job at crossing paths with as few idols as possible. You weren’t about to seek them out now. You’d been sought out yourself a time or two, by idols that were close to the trainees you spoke with more frequently. Apparently you’d been labeled “the nice janitor noona with the snacks” and curiosity and food were fabulous motivators.
It didn’t happen frequently. When you’d asked about it, you’d learned that apparently you were being gatekept by the trainees. Ostensibly so they could keep your snacks for themselves, but you liked to believe they just liked you.
You finally get your phone connected to the speakers and start to blast your work playlist. You can’t help doing a little dancey-dance as you begin to sweep, mop, and wax the hardwood floor. What could you say? Your playlist was simply bop after bop.
You’re in the middle of dipping your mop handle low and pretending to sing along to Fall Out Boy when the door creaks open slowly.
You straighten quickly but there’s no way the person at the door didn’t see you goofing around.
“One sec!” You call out quickly, forgetting to speak Korean in your haste. You dash over to the sound system to pause your music, your ears ringing in the silence. When you turn around you’re confronted with the amused eyes of one Lee Know of Stray Kids.
“Ah, Lee Know-ssi!” You bow quickly but politely in greeting. “I’m sorry, this room is being cleaned right now, it’s not available for practice.”
Lee Know gives you a slow nod, looking like he was holding in a laugh.
“I know, I saw the sign,” Lee Know replies, tilting his head at you. You secretly let out a breath of relief at that. For a second there you’d thought you’d forgotten. “I was just curious who was playing music loud enough to hear outside.”
You immediately fluster at that, waving your hands in front of yourself, “Ahhh, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to disturb!” You gesture at the floor machine sitting pretty in the corner of the room with your supply cart.
“I’ll be waxing the floor in a bit, usually the machine is loud enough to cover it. Hadn’t gotten there yet, though.” You laugh nervously, popping your wrists and fingers just for something to do with your hands.
Lee Know shakes his head, waving your apology aside. “No, you’re good, I got to see something fun out of it.”
You’re sure you flush bright red, and you cant help but bury your head in your hands with a groan. You can hear Lee Know stifle a laugh, but you’re too busy languishing in your humiliation to pay attention to him.
After a moment you peak at him from between your fingers. He still looks like he’s trying very hard not to laugh at you.
“If I bribe you with snacks will you erase this from your memory?” You plead with him. He raises an eyebrow at you and hums consideringly.
“Depends on the snack.” He finally concedes, prompting you to start towards your cart, much more at ease with a potential solution in sight.
“I’ve got a couple kinds,” You start to explain, “Everyone likes to ambush me for them, so I’ve learned to come prepared.”
You hear another huff of laughter from far closer than you were expecting, Lee Know having wandered over while you were distracted with rummaging though your cart. You have to move several things out of the way before you can grab the small basket containing your prize.
You may have gotten used to being ambushed for snacks, but that also meant you’d gotten used to hiding them so that you’d at least get to eat some of them. You swore the trainees could smell when you had their favorites stocked up. Animals, the lot of them.
“Who’s ambushing you?” Lee Know questions with amusement.
“Everyone who knows I have them.” You reply with false despair. “The trainees have a sixth sense for them, I fear.” Lee know snorts at that and you grin at him with equal mirth.
“Ah, yes, as a former trainee, I can confirm that they do.” He tells you somberly. You click your tongue and shake your head.
“I knew it.” you say, “They only love me for my snacks. And here I thought they just liked to talk.” You place a dramatic hand over your heart, acting hurt and betrayed.
Lee Know chuckles at you, but doesn’t respond as he leans in to
HI Liv, when you have time, could you please recommend fanfics that have the dynamic of Draco not knowing how to deal with his feelings for Harry, moving away from him and self-sabotaging due to his traumas and then him and Harry making it work?I went through something like this recently and I think reading something like this will bring me emotional comfort. Thank you anyway. Take care and have a good week.
Hello friend! I hope you’re taking good care of yourself 💗🫂 of course, I personally find these very comforting so hopefully they will work for you. Sending love! Happy holidays xo
Pride by @writcraft (E, 9k)
Harry and Draco form an unlikely friendship after the war. Even as the friendship becomes more, Draco is quick to push Harry away before they become too deeply involved. As Harry fights to save an iconic wizarding pub and gay safe-haven from being closed down, circumstances force Draco to confront his true feelings head on.
What Real Thing? by @l0vegl0wsinthedark (E, 12k)
They don’t cuddle, they don’t talk about their relationship (or lack thereof) and they certainly never fall asleep in each other’s arms.
Thickets, Anonymous (E, 17k)
When Draco returns to the UK after two decades of building his career as an internationally-renowned artist to look after his ailing, estranged father, he crosses paths with his former flame, Harry Potter, in the most unexpected way.
Unfinished Business by cupiscent (E, 20k)
Ten years after the War ends, Harry and Draco still haven't got their act together. But maybe it's not too late.
Better To Burn Than To Fade Away by Ren (E, 23k)
Harry Potter is a legend in the world of broomstick racing. He's won almost every cup, trophy, and bowl – except for the historical London-Nome which has been on hiatus for the past several years. Now the London-Nome is starting again, and Harry will do anything to pull off one last big win.
I Bet That You Look Good on the Dancefloor by birdsofshore (E, 28k)
Harry felt lit up from inside as soon as he entered the bar. There were blokes dancing together, their bodies close to one another, not keeping a wary distance as Harry was always careful to do when he was near another man. God, he wanted this – wanted it so much he could taste it, a metallic tang of heat and desire. He suspected nothing would ever be the same again – especially when he saw who else was in the room.
Make Me a Headline (I Want to Be That Bold) by @dictacontrion (E, 31k)
Draco never expected to see Harry doing that again. Especially with someone else, in a grainy photograph that's landed on his desk one Monday morning.
Potential Gravity by @lol-zeitgeistic (E, 32k)
Draco is not good at Cards Against Humanity, but Harry’s not good at being human, so it all works out. Except for the explosions. And Harry’s inability to live when Draco’s not around.
All Roads by @korlaena (M, 36k)
Draco hates his job at the Prophet. He hates it even more when he’s assigned to write an article on Harry Potter, who left the country three years ago after their falling out. Draco doesn’t want to face the truth about himself, but he’s stuck between Harry and his duty, and he’s out of options.
(We'll Call This Fixer-Upper) Home by @phdmama (E, 52k)
Draco Malfoy hasn’t set foot on English soil in ten years. After the war, he fled to America, where he found himself in a community, and healed himself through following his heart into music. He’s now the lead singer and songwriter for an internationally known band, who have come back to headline the Wiltshire Music Festival. But as Draco is about to learn, his past isn’t as far away as he might have believed, and his future may hold more than he ever could have dreamed.
Super Rich Kids by @thusspoketrish (E, 81k)
Draco Malfoy has become disillusioned by the glitz and glamour of the scandalous lives of the Post-Second Wizarding War Pureblood Elite. Enter: one existential crisis, one group of thieving cynical friends, and several terrible, terrible decisions.
Dwelling on Dreams by @the-sinking-ship (E, 135k)
Draco thought he could avoid Potter for the duration of his brief return to England. He’d stick to his schedule and be back home in Paris, where he belonged, in a few short months. No trouble at all. He had plenty to occupy him, what with the opening of the London branch of his successful apothecary, his innovative research, drinks with Pansy, a backlog of unread potions periodicals.
Small Miracles - Part Two of My Scanlan Shorthalt fluff fic
Part one: Tentative Love
Small Miracles
Scanlan Shorthalt and Other Vox Machina characters Created by Critical Role
Story By Melissa C. Scraper
Few months before Scanlan had proposed to Lucy they had all journeyed to the abanadoned Collins Family Estate “I said to stay in the basement for a reason.” Lucy said looking away they had found their way into the formal dining room using Pike’s connection to the everlight, “You asked about the scar on my arm. The secret package behind the south wall has suit of armor in it. When I started running I tripped over it.”
“This was a massacre. Like the Briarwoods did to my family.” Percy sees a portrait of Quentin “I think your father was a business associate of my parents he looks vaguely familiar.”
“Please don’t look at that portrait. I hated sitting for it. It was family tradition for everyone In the family to sit for portrait on their 15th birthday.” She looks “wait a minute, i looks like at some point Gabriel damaged it there is letter in the frame.” She gets it out.
Scanlan “Where is the music coming from?”
“My father’s spirit is playing his piano for me.” It would take all night for them to figure out how to carefully remove the seven bodies of Lucy’s family. ”the trick will be actually burying them in the graveyard. The caretaker never consistently locked the gates.”
A few days later at the Inn “It’s okay everyone this is the Collins family attorney, in name and in title, Desmond Collins this is my..boyfriend, Scanlan Shorthalt.” she didn’t want to call him lover because they were intimate in other ways everyone else introduced themselves “Make Sure my family gets grave markers and bury Eli in my crypt.” They look at her “as soon as we are presented publicly we are assigned crypt in the collins mausoleum. Desmond has one too.”
Desmond “I will make sure everything gets done.”
“Sell the mansion. My home is Whitestone.” She looked at him “Sell the dead to the family company to the workers. I know part of the reason they hate our family is because it has always profited off their work and barely paid them.”
“Are you sure?”
“it never felt like home to me, Monty. I know it never felt like home to you either or you never would have left town with Leticia. The same time my parents met.”
Desmond takes out last will and testament “Your grandmother left everything to you.”
“I know.” she signs all the papers “Time to burn bridges and not look back. I want you to give 10, 000 gold pieces to Mister Stokes the former groundskeeper I saw that he is living in town now. Tell him whatever you wish. He deserves it after years of dealing with Gabriel.” She looks at Desmond “Monty, set aside money so you and Leticia can adopt I know you always wanted kids but never were able to have your own.”
Scanlan stands there mindlessly strumming his mandolin he was still trying to finish the song, he had been trying since they officially started courting to write this song. He sits with Percy “She is so gentle how is it possible that after all she has been through she still wants to help people?”
“The best I can say, my friend is that Lucy wants to help people not end up the way her family did.” He looked at him “Stop trying to r write the song. It will come to you when the time is right. I have feeling her family has enemies in this village. Did you see the people glaring as we arrived.” After Desmond leaves Lucy sits with them.
Lucy takes the note out she found in her portrait out and opens it.
Lucy, I don’t know if you will read this I hope you are somewhere happy and safe. You’ve probably met with Desmond by now. I have feeling I know what you will do with the house. I feel like I was terrible father to you. I am sorry for the things I may have forced you to do in your life, I am sorry for betraying your mother. She tried so hard to change me but I was already of questionable morals when I met her. Your mother had an older sister who lived in town before she. I couldn’t stay loyal to one woman. Their brother came to town intent on shooting me after their sister was found dead.
But I don’t need to burden you with my issues. I left money for you with a friend of mine in Whitestone. Desmond doesn’t know about it but should you ever end up there ask for help. Live your life, I was never allowed to live the life I wanted. I wanted to be a sailor. Do be the light in someone else’s life that you were in my brief and corrupted life, your father Quentin Charles Collins
She hands the note to Scanlan “Her father has money somewhere in Whitestone. That he buried there for her.” After spending two weeks and finally figuring out that it had been buried near the Sun Tree.
“I know normally men kneel when they are about to propose but I am already shorter than you. Lucero Angelique Harridge DuPres Collins will you take this humble jack ass as your husband I will do my best to continue taking care of you.” Suddenly trinket lift him up where he is looking her In the eye “What’s your answer.”
“Yes.” He kisses her as his hand gently caresses her cheek “I love you. I do I do I do.” He looks at Vex “Can trinket put me down his nose is in awkward places.” They laugh as Trinket lowers him to the ground
A little over a year later “Calm down it is not deadly disease unless you think of baby as a parasite.” Lucy says as she returns from her visit with the De Rolo Family Physician. Suddenly it dawns on Scanlan what she just said and he trips over the fireplace hearth as he goes over to her
“Really?” his face breaks out into a big dopey grin “I never thought I could be more happy that I was when you became mrs. shorthalt.” He stands up and kisses her “I guess I won’t be able to sit on your lap for few months. That was one of his favorite things about coming home to her. Sitting on her lap as she’d played with his ponytail “You’re my home, you know that right?” he said
“You’re mine too. You saved me in more ways than you understand.” She whispers “If the baby is a Girl we should name her Daphne Juniper.” She smiles at him “Let’s go for walk we haven’t been for walk in few days.” As they walk “I think the baby was conceived that night at harvest festival in Vasselheim.”
“when you accidentally figured out playing with my ears…turns me on.” He said with a smirk “I can’t believe you remembered I told you my mother’s name, was Juniper.” They sit on the bench Percy, Vax and Grog carved for them as a wedding present. “Your father appeared in one of my dreams shortly after we got married. He told me not be the man he was.”
“He saw his own mistakes too late, his music was the only way he could think of to show me love because he was raised by an emotionally distant father who always waited for him to make mistakes.” She smiled “You are wearing the shirt I made you.”
“I like it more than the shirts I paid for before you gave it to me to keep me warm. I never thought I would be a father. You never explained why you refuse to hold seances.”
“Because they don’t just create an opening for the ones you want to talk to. They create an opening for dark spirits to enter too. My mother’s journal said Shortly after I was born, my father roommate from university showed up at the mansion with cursed mask that belonged to warlock and he put it on while under the influence of the warlock he tried to seduce my mother. My father had to stab him. And he fell off the cliff and into the water.”
“How are you the only sane one born in that house?” he said smiling pulling her out of the morbid mood that she tended to switch to when her family was brought up “If we ever have other children I think we should name one of them Elijah. After your brother.”
“That’s a good idea. I was just thinking about what you did for my birthday. Not in the bedroom.”
“I still can’t believe I convinced Grog and Percy to be part of that dance number.” He grinned “But I love to see you laugh and smile though.” She flinches a little “Should I make a brilliant cover story for he bruise I will obviously get from tripping over the fireplace?”
“Have you forgotten that Percy tripped hitting his head on the dining table when Vex announced she was pregnant. He’s way more dignified than you. I swear he mumbled fuckin’ ow.”
“You weren’t there when Vesper was born. He forgot to open the door first and walked into it.”
Meanwhile inside Percy “I am going to have the craftsman make crib for them.”
“Percy Darling, you are blacksmith. You could give them silver rattle as a token of good luck. Like Lucy has done for our daughter.” They all look down at their wrists, they had gotten so accustomed to the hand woven bracelets she gave them for their birthdays that they almost forgot they had them “She made the dream catcher we have over our bed.”
Vax looking out the window “There’s going to be another death in village soon. Our lady of the ravens is roaming around.” He knew Lucy could see it too but lucy had learned not to spoil their calm moments by mentioning the frailty of existence “She uses the money she has to help others. We should do what we can to make her pregnancy comfortable.”
Vex “Brother, we all agree with that. Come here we are going to show you how to sew and we are going to make baby quilt for their baby.” Lucy had taught her how to do quilts and sometimes she would do it as form of meditation. She laughs as he cusses under his breath every time he pokes himself with needle “Honestly Vax you can handle daggers and swords but 1 tiny needle draws blood.” The intended to work on the quilt when Lucy and Scanlan went for walks. “Why aren’t you making your husband work on this thing too?”
“Because, Vax, he’s making his own gift for Lucy and Scanlan’s baby.” On fact Percy would go overboard and fashion silver rattle and build and cradle for baby Daphne himself. Lucy deserved his respect and he knew she would never accept a title.
A few months later with Pike as Midwife, Scanlan paced nervously outside the bedroom and when he heard the baby cry. He carefully knocked on the door “Is it safe to come in.”
Lucy “Come say hello to our daughter.” She said quietly “Daphne this idiot here is your father.”
“Hello there little one.” He smiled at lucy and brushed her hair out of her face “I can watch the baby while you sleep.” He carefully takes the baby into his arms “Hello Daphne Juniper. Your mom and I promise to do our best to protect you and let you just be yourself.”
“Don’t forget t you need to eventually let her sleep too, Scanlan.” She kisses him and as soon as the door is closed Lucy falls asleep
“Hey everyone say hello to the newest member of our group. Daphne Juniper Shorthalt.” He looked at them “Before you ask. It was my choice to wait outside.” He said to Percy.
“That’s not what I was going to say.” He pulls out gift he made for Scanlan. “I figured it would be good for you to have rocking chair in proportion to your body so you don’t accidentally hurt yourself of Daphne.”
Scanlan “Before I forget again. Lucy wants Vax and Pike to be Daphne’s godparents.”
Vax’ildan “Why me. I was dick to her the first time I said anything to her.”
“Because she wants Daphne to learn about the balance between light and dark. Life and death. One can’t exist without the other.” He looked at percy “Thank you. You went overboard . you hmade an ornate hand carved crib, a silver rattle and whatever that is.”
“it was supposed to be silver spoon but I couldn’t get it right and kept cutting them so I made it into windchimes.” He blushed “What can I say I like it better making gifts than I did making weapons when we were just roaming band of psychos.”
Pike “But gods we have good stories to tell the kids when they are old enough.”
“I never told you about the in the chest with the money Quentin left for Lucy.” Scanlan said “It said we are all stories in the end. Make the rest of your story the best one you can.”
Percy “The people of the town want to make Lucy the first saint of Whitestone.”
“She is not a saint she is just person who wants to atone for the sins of her family.”
Kiki “She found a dead bord in the manor garden and insisted we have funeral for it. Let’s go for walk Vax.”
A few weeks later “I know I am expected to stay in bed for two months. But I hate being in bed.” Lucy looks around “Where are Scanlan and Daphne.”
“He takes her for walk in her pram, to help her sleep when you are sleeping.” Percy explained as Lucy sat down “Here have something to eat.”
“As long as someone else cooked it. last time I ate something you made, Percival. I was sick for three days.”
“What can I say?” he smiled “I am a good blacksmith but apparently cooking requires a delicate touch.” He placed a bowl of stew in front of her “Believe it or not. Scanlan made this. He’s asked Vex and Pike to show him to make food for you and when she starts eating solid food, Daphne. You’ve made him a better man. He was a decent man.”
“I saw the man he hid from all of you. He was afraid you’d reject him if you knew his truth.” She sighed “That’s how I felt.”
When Scanlan gets home with baby daphne. He takes her out of the baby carriage and walks over to lucy and kisses her “Hey princess.”
“Hey there handsome. What is the baby wearing.”
“A gift from Gilmore and Deidre.” It suddenly dawns on the other that h the baby is wearing beret that matches Scanlan’s “I think it is adorable.”
“She’s only three weeks old she doesn’t need to draw attention, people are drawn to babies anyway. It is not the beret I object to. Babies have sensitive skin and Gilmore gave her a silk romper.” She sighs everyone, in their lives, wanted to spoil the baby
A few months later “Pike, can you watch Daphne tonight. My wife and I need time to ourselves for a little while we are going to the Inn.” When Lucy comes out of the bedroom after putting on the clothes that Gilmore just made for her, his jaw dropped “Be Still my heart.”
Gilmore “I told you I could make an outfit that makes him speechless without showing cleavage.”
“Thank Diedre for the hat too.” She said as she went ot pay him
“No. it is gift. I can get paid by other customers you are a friend.” He kisses lucy on the cheek “be careful not to accidentally create another life tonight.”
“You just want a boy to see if I will make you a godfather, Gilmore.”
“If I did have a godson his presentation outfit would be fabulous.” He said as he left
Lucy giggled and went over to him as he stood on the stepstool to kiss her “Hey there handsome.” she said, it would be obvious to people who didn’t even know them well that he made an effort to always show he loved her. “I love you. I didnlt forget you birthday I just hadn’t finished you present yet.” She goes overo the window seat and opens the cabinet taking out a wooden box containing and hand carved bamboo flute
He opens it and stares at it for few minutes “Lucy. Is this why you have been borrowing books from the library.”
“I gave those to her as a gift, Scanlan.” Vax elbows Percy “Ow. You didn’t need to elbow me that hard Vax’ildan.” Scanlan starts playing the lullabye he’s been writing for Daphne, it was obvious to everyone around them that his inspiration was now his wife and daughter and not just self praising prose.
To be continued…
TW: depression, sui ideation, the big sad, etc etc
I hate schoolwork. It’s petty, it’s silly, it’s beneath me, but I am so fed up with it. I am 20 years old and I haven’t graduated high school. There are so many good messages on here about not needing to meet any artificial timetable. That we can do things in our own time. But holy crap guys I’ve been stagnating for so long. I’ve been fighting an uphill battle with this part of high school for three years now.
I started homeschooling halfway through Grade 10. I have self-guided courses that I can do on my own time which still earn me credits to go towards my high school diploma. When I started, I was working at a pace that (if maintained) would have let me graduate a year early. I was masking ADHD, anxiety, and depression so all of that slowly leaked out. I was procrastinating, oversleeping some days then under-sleeping others. I developed an unhealthy habit of eating when I felt bored and like I needed a distraction. Some life things happened like my mom getting cancer (she’s alive and well, but her neutral state of “healthy” will never be the same) and my dad kicking out the three of us (mom, brother, and me) for a while because my dad and brother had a fight.
Those nights were the closest I got to killing myself. We had nothing but the clothes on our backs and some cash we were able to use for a hotel. He did this to his immunocompromised wife during the height of the pandemic. He didn’t care. Even when we were let back in the house (because we threatened to involve the police) he didn’t speak to us for days. I was hardly eating. A family friend talked to all of us over Zoom and referred to my dad’s doings as a “hiccup”. I want to be a forgiving person. I like to think that everyone deserves a second chance. But I can’t say honestly that I’ve forgiven my father. I don’t think I’ve even forgiven the family friend for calling it a “hiccup”. He probably didn’t even know the whole situation, but it stung so bad. And I hugged my father that day. As if it was fine. As if he doesn’t still scare me and I lose the air in my lungs when he stands behind me.
Ever since then my life has been derailed. In the summer of 2020 I started treatment for depression and anxiety. The summer I should have graduated. Some time in 2021 I was diagnosed with ADHD twice because the first person to do it never kept proper records and then left the hospital she was working at. So it was as if my diagnosis never happened. So 6 months after the first time, the second diagnosis finally happened. I’m on medication for it now. I thought it was helping, but I’ve been so useless again for months now and with no changes in meds to explain it. I also might have undiagnosed autism, which really stings because I was neglected when I was younger and the excuse was that my brother needed the attention since he’s autistic. Anyway. I don’t have the energy to shower regularly. I hate needing to make food for myself. I literally have two courses left then I’m done high school for good. 5 basic-ass assignments then it’s over. But instead I watch YouTube and try to make stupid music on my laptop to get a tiny hit of dopamine. I search “help” and sort by latest on Tumblr to see if there is anyone I can comfort or cheer up. Is it actually altruism? Or am I just so starved for attention and validation and companionship that I try to please anyone I can? Do I try to help others because I may as well since I’m the only person I can’t come through for?
With all of this, I have friends who are pressuring me to move out very very quickly. They know how much living at home is making me hurt and ache so I know they’re coming from a good place. But I can hardly take care of my own health and hygiene, how they hell do they expect I can take care of a home and hold a job?
That’s why I don’t just hate schoolwork. I definitely do, but that’s not all of it. I hate schoolwork because it’s a testament to just how stuck I am in life. In this one place. Writing a few sentences to an essay each day if I’m lucky. I hate it. I just hate it so much.
One of those friends. We like each other. So so much. We want a future together. Her and I. But she is one of the ones trying to rush me. I know we both want me to be in a good place before starting a relationship. But she also doesn’t want to be in limbo forever while I work out my issues. So it’s like an ultimatum. At this rate I need to move out in the next month or two or I’m gonna lose her for good, it seems. That’s as far as one of our mutual friends of the group knows. So now I have another point of pressure to get my act together before things crash and burn even more. But it had the opposite effect because I feel lost and stuck and like I can’t do anything.
This is just to vent. Cause idk what else to do than rant and maybe just maybe I’ll stop being a piece of trash. God. I hate myself so much rn. I’m such a stupid worthless prick. Dammit.
#just ranting#personal rant#tw depressing thoughts#tw sui ideation#haha now I’m the one screaming out for help cause I feel lost and like nothing is worth anything now ahaha
this isn’t how it works but i'm gonna do it anyway (tony hawks regular voice)
🎱 haven’t posted anything yet so: bookmarks 147 and gifts 1 :)
🍓 i got into writing fanfics a long time ago when i discovered fanfiction.net as pretty much a kid and i thought "hey that's neat maybe i can make my own little stories" and since then have never totally finished a fanfic 👍 it's called cosmic dread and it's terminal
🌵 not particularly writing music (but yeah it still works) and not a playlist (a beautiful album), just want to share because sturge Should be shared: https://spotify.link/ofKYQWtEjIb
🕯 eugh. like a 4 for editing. it's a love/hate relationship and i'm not sure which of us is in the wrong. we might be doomed (shaky soap opera breath) but i still love him...
🛼 oooh. okay. 🤖🚀💥⚠️🤕 ??? is this anything ???
🥑 i know who's going to send me some obscure gifs and tumblr posts about it
🥤 ahhh. i immediately wanna recommend cargocrate's star wars stuff but this is a trek/tng blog. we're not mutuals but damsondaforge's work is amazing and hits all the right spots 🫶
💌 please don’t ever ask me that again. we don't say that e-word around here
🌻 my bestie juniper :) i love u i hope ur blossoming in ur new job weehee
🐇 i'm... going to assume reader-insert means (Y/N)? i don't like reading or writing reader-inserts (sorry) because it doesn’t feel believable, to me or the audience i'm writing for. i'd rather get lost in a story than have to talk myself INTO a story everytime the reader insert does something i wouldn’t do. i love original characters though, we need more of those beauties
🧃 mm that's easy, this is like my first ever post on this blog. i'm a dog groomer and i almost faint when a dog slobbers on me 😀
🎲 ha! free time. what a concept! i get maybe 3 hours a week that i can confidently label as free time
🍄 favourite dataforge headcanon: data is the little spoon and i'm right
🧸 make me smile or laugh or cry (not in a mean way, i'm just an emotional guy)
🪐 my niece! she's the best 4 year old ever, i love her. i guess work is going well but i'm expanding the business so those three hours of spare time are in dangerous waters. my gender transition is chugging along nicely too, just waiting for my hrt appointment next month and i'm firmly on the wait list for top surgery. woohoo!
📚 a dog on the cancellation list (chow called sui mai 🧡), supplies i need to order for the salon and some crime shows my writing workshop suggested (e.g. taggart, cracker, trial and retribution etc.)
🍬 i'm pretty sure i don't have any unpopular opinions about any of the tng characters. i'm just like sitting here until u hear some unexpected snarling and frothing macbeth-style
🔪 weirdest topic has probably been about go karting and homelessness and any possible connections there. please don’t ask
🦷 nobody is assigned a timeline. do things in your own time and enjoy the seconds, minutes and hours. depression is a terrible beast that gnashes those second hands between its teeth, but once you reclaim your life - go and live it. make decisions and follow through
❄️ oooh i'm not sharing that on the big wide web but cargocrate would turn any old dust into gold. trust that guy with my life
🌿 oof. writer's block, for me, can be defined as low confidence and nothing more or less. what you write isn’t good enough, how you write isn’t good enough, who you write isn’t good enough. it's tricky but writer's block can only be conquered by practising and improving, having a strong support network of like-minded people (other writers, not just people who like to read), a healthy feedback system for all involved and a life to live and experience (to inform your work and to help create ideas). often, writer's block is just the wall you erected yourself and you're panicking because your view is limited. let go of ego, let go of the block
🥐 "minion... is that your pinis...?"
🏜 i haven’t received ao3 comments but feedback from friends is Always useful :D i prefer honesty, and i love it when people tell me what i can try in order to make the piece work better. but you can't go wrong with a solid "AAAAA-"
🍦 augh god i'm gonna get blasted but i really dislike tasha yar's character. i could talk about the technicals that led to this conclusion but we want some good things, so. i like that she was a symbol for women, at the time of airing and still today, to pursue a career that's male-dominated, and the respect she commanded in the position. i enjoyed how unapologetically stubborn she could be with safety of the crew. i honestly cannot summon more thoughts, i'm so sorry tasha
🥝 i don't lie, or i at least don't make a habit of it. i used to lie as a kid (because i got myself into some difficult situations) but hated the feeling of it. i think the last time i lied was a couple of weeks ago when i told my boss the writing workshop had gone well, but i hadn't actually gone. i'd been so defeated by period cramps that i was worried about driving on the motorway - but i wasn't about to shout this across the salon where everyone could hear
🦋 ocean vuong is always on my heart and mind. but also that fucking data & picard song. it's ripping me to pieces. i've almost memorised picard's security code
🦴 mm. science fiction in general is a huge imspiration to me, as well as drama, but my biggest helper isn't media, it's poetry :)
🍅 my biggest weakness with writing is dialogue, i think. i've always struggled with it because i struggle anticipating what Real people are going to say to me, let alone the fictional people in my head. i need to work more on drip-feeding character through dialogue and drive stories forward using it
🐚 it depends on the surprise lmao. if i have to go/be somewhere specific for the surprise, i would really rather people tell me what it is and let me choose if it's worth the time. if it's like a takeaway dinner or some extra dessert i didn’t know about, i'd be a fucking Fool in the tarot deck to turn it away
🪲 again, this feels like an opportunity for people to steal my work so nah i won't be sharing my wip on here. the wip will be shared when it's no longer a wip !
☁️ an old chat with a friend. not sure how we got talking about it but we wanted to know what we'd each look like as a plate. crate thought i'd be orange and a little wonky and i thought he'd be green and patterned. since then, i've always thought of myself as the wonky orange plate :)
🐝 i really only have a couple of friends and this post is making light work of my records 😭 okay i'll play the sentimental card instead and say, my mother. we never used to get along and came to blows (verbally) nearly every week, but much of that was my own fault for being such an angry child. i was acting out of hurt, but i shouldn’t have taken it out on her. now, we live and work together, and i can easily call her one of my best friends 🧡
🌸 mattie! he's a rescued greyhound from the racing industry over in ireland. i love him with my whole and fragile heart
🎨 hhhh there are too many pieces of fanart out there...... but i'm always a sucker for A Fistful Of Datas fanart 👀
🧩 mischaracterisation! ooc! no paragraphs/strange formatting! extremely Long paragraphs! infodumping! a genuine lack of interest to create a story that moves people (this one is tricky to define but, essentially, no substance whatsoever)!
May 25, 2002
Oz park, Chicago, Illinois
Kazuo tugged at the collar of his gown. It belonged to the school, and smelled like mildew. His cap was itchy, itchy enough that he wondered if he'd get lice. The school spirit was overwhelming and made him want to hurl. He shuffled in place, classmates glancing at him and moving away. That at least pleased him.
Ever since he'd kicked the living shit out of Jack, his peers had left him the fuck alone. Which had really been his goal. If everyone was going to treat him like a freakish loner, then that's how he was going to act. He didn't want to be here, but he needed his diploma. He didn't know what he'd be doing after today, but he figured that piece of paper might help.
He wanted to leave.
Leave Chicago. Run away.
He thought about his grandfather. Honestly, he did hold a degree of resentment towards the man, mostly for not helping him. He hated his father. And feared him. His father wasn't afraid to hit him, and Kazuo was well aware that he likely wouldn't survive if he dared retaliate.
"Fuck, let's get this shit over with," he muttered, kicking at the grass. They were in Oz park near the school. Some grand-sounding music started up, and he raised his head. He was in line behind and in front of a bunch of morons. The valedictorian had started droning on about school spirit and how they were all a big family.
Bullshit.
Kazuo was lonely. Horribly so. He'd been forced into isolation. He exhaled sharply, rolling his eye so hard he swore he could see spine - now the principal, his old nemesis, was going on about having fostered such a fantastic sense of community and respect for people of all walks of life among the student body.
Again, bullshit.
This was taking forever. He was wishing he'd chugged a bunch of milk to cropdust these bastards mercilessly, and it was also unseasonably warm and dairy puke didn't sound as fun. The principal finished yapping, and the music kicked up once more. Kazuo scanned the crowd. There was nobody there for him. His grandfather didn't care, and dear ol' dad didn't care and was busy with his job - Kazuo had been right, he was running an off-track betting operation. Better than a phone sex operator, at least.
The line shuffled forward as names began to be called, the morons in attendance losing their shit over their spawn making it out of high school without being pregnant or getting a DWI. It was like the opening scene of The Lion King, but stupid. He listened to the names being called, mentally assigning each an insult, Douche, cunt, dickbag, jackass…
Their graduating class wasn't massive, so when he heard, "Kazuo Mitsuwa," he trudged onstage to silence. Which he had expected, so he took his diploma, spread his arms wide, announced, "You love me! You really, really love me! How unfortunate for your sense of taste," flipped the double bird, sprinted to the edge of the stage, and front-flipped off, screaming, "EAT SHIT AND DIE, MOTHERFUCKERS!"
He landed in the aisle among stunned onlookers, ripped off his cap and gown, flinging them into the crowd, and bolted towards Webster Ave. He'd hidden a 2-liter of Coke in the bushes that was mostly rum, and now…he was gonna go to the Applebee's on Grand Avenue, get food to go, and then get trashed.
It was dark when Kazuo stumbled back home, head pounding. His key bounced off the lock a few times before his dad flung open the door, looking furious, "Where the fuck have you been?" "Grad…grad…gradiashunnnn…." "For this long? Bullshit." Kazuo was still coherent enough to note that his dad didn't seem to notice he reeked of booze - probably due to the constant smoking, "Got paper." "Well, good job, you worthless little bastard." "I gotta lie down." "Don't get too comfortable. I signed you up for bartending classes starting tomorrow. Even a moron like you can do that."
"But…" Kazuo turned, vision going in and out of focus, "I don…don' wan…" His head snapped to the side as he was struck, an angry red welt already appearing. Kazuo stepped back, tears in his eye, hand to his cheek, "W…w…why?" His father grabbed him roughly by the shirt, pulling up so that he had to stand on his toes, "You listen to me, you drunk little shit," he hissed, "I have spent way too long providing for you. You're going to take these classes, get a job, and pay me back. You owe me."
Kazuo struggled for a moment before Kenjiro flung him into a wall, cracking the plaster. The teenager immediately cowered, drawing in his legs and covering his head, "Do…don't hurt…" Kenjiro glared down at his son before shoving past him. Kazuo took the opportunity to flee to his bedroom, locking the door behind him. He crawled into bed, under the covers, shivering.
Alcohol still fogged his mind, but it had been partially cleared by fear. He pulled the tattered He-Man blanket over his head, sitting up, focusing on the painting on the wall that always comforted him - the one his mom had painted of the man with graying hair and kind eyes, "You…" He said quietly, "You look like you'd treat me right…" Kazuo sighed, flopping down. No way to get out of it.
Tomorrow, he'd still be under his dad's control.
Friend!
I am sorry you had a rough week, but I'm so glad you find some joy in my silly asks. Let's see if I can make you smile again. ( ͡❛ ͜ʖ͡❛ ) (Even if you don't deserve it because you tried to murder me again with white tee Honey...)
I have very much to say about your heist answers, but I feel it may reveal me a bit too much, so I'll save that for my big reveal day. heh heh But suffice it to say that your answer is CHEF'S KISS, and your read on the guys is spot-on. I loved it! Your answer also reflected you so well! I see my little planner in every detail!!! ♥️
Okay, so after that resounding success, let's have a little more fun together. Enjoy the chaos of this blizzard of weirdo questions.
Recommend me ONE song please, but it can't be from any of the bands listed in your pinned post. 😉 It can be k-pop or not.
Biggest pet peeve:
Do you have a favorite word (can be either based on the way it sounds or what it means) or, on the other side, one you absolutely can't stand?
Hypothetical: In this alternate universe, as soon as you turn ten, you are assigned elemental magic. Which element are you assigned: earth, fire, wind, water, darkness, light, metal, nature?
If you could live in one of these eras, which one would you choose: Rennaissance, 1880s, 1920s, 1950s, 1970s?
Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, or Slytherin?
Greatest movie villain:
Three wishes from a genie:
Have a rocking weekend, bestie! ♥️
HO HO HO mbb secret santa
Ahh, you definitely made me smile again, thank you!
And here we go!! So I listen to a TON of bands and singers and I love to make playlists for people. Since I don't know much about your musical taste beyond Monsta X, I'll just recommend one of my favorite songs, Circle The Fringes by The Gutter Twins. It's honestly hard not to recommend a dozen songs but I will restrain myself lol
Biggest Pet Peeve: I HAVE SO MANY but the one that makes me grind my teeth is when people call whipped cream "whip cream". Please don't ask me why, I just really hate it.
My favorite word is meander. I just like the way it feels in my mouth.
I think I would be assigned earth. I've always vibed with it and more than one person has called me an immovable object lol. That seems very earth-like to me.
That's tough but I think the 1920s. I've done a lot of reading on that era, I love the architecture, the fashion, the music. Most past eras suck for a lot of reasons, but I think I'd do all right in the 20s.
Hufflepuff for sure, always have been.
I sat here and thought about my favorite villain for a really long time, and it's hard!! There are so many good ones. One of my favorites is Maleficent (from the animated Sleeping Beauty, I can't stand the live action ones).
Three wishes: to understand (and speak) all languages, eternal youth, and to be able to freeze time
I hope your weekend was wonderful!!
I'm just going to go ahead and say this: Crowley went past "protective" to "possessive and controlling" this season.
Aziraphale made blunders, too, but he was trying so hard. He made some direct requests instead of using hints and codes and puppy dog eyes, he reached out repeatedly in more than one way, he gave Crowley all the space he seemed to require, and he kept trying. Taking the Bentley looked like trying to maneuver Crowley into the bookshop to me - and the Bentley was totally into it!
It's not clear how sapient the Bentley is, or how it feels about it's existence. It is clearly fantastically loyal to Crowley or it would never have gotten to Tadfield, but it's also a bit passive-aggressive with him, with all the Queen, as if it's resentful or rebellious even while it exerts itself to please and protect him. For Aziraphale, though, the car lays itself out - tears off at rather higher speeds even than usual, out of Crowley's orbit; but once on the road it's open to slowing down, taking its time, changing its color, playing different kinds of music, learning to honk - that car was having fun and so was Aziraphale, but Crowley couldn't relax and let them have that. No, he felt like he had to hijack the radio like an administrator from Hell and did his best to control everything - no yellow, no honk, no sweets! But when Shax, an actual threat, got into the car, where was his monitoring then?
Meanwhile: "Can't you do something?" Maggie and Nina demand as they bravely resist the demonic assault, and Aziraphale says aloud something that confirms a headcanon of mine at the same time that it flips it: "Of course I could, but he enjoys rescuing me so much."
Aziraphale is deliberately hiding his light under a bushel. I always thought he was - we get glimpses of it in the first series - and attributed it to PTSD. My reasoning, based on S1 and the book, was: Heaven requires him to be a soldier, a frontline fighter, and he's perfectly capable of doing that, has in fact done it before (at least during the War, probably also from time to time during his tenure on Earth) and must have been successful at it or he'd scarcely have been picked for the Eastern Gate, but he hates it, hates it so much (due to war trauma?) that he won't lift the sword or pick up the thundergun until all his other options close down. (Plus, stingy miracle budget and too many rules.) And I may still be right about that, but - he doesn't say "I hate it." He says "Crowley enjoys rescuing me."
He's making himself smaller and less effectual than he is, so that Crowley can feel heroic.
Mind you, it's clear to us as viewers that Crowley also likes it when Aziraphale does something badass - gives away a flaming sword, blows up his halo. But the protectiveness and the giving in to puppy dog eyes and the rescue games have been prominent enough over time that this is obscured to Aziraphale. He's not comfortable telling Crowley about blowing up his halo, and there is a very real possibility that this is because he thinks Crowley will love him less if he does too much of that sort of thing. Or maybe that Crowley will feel less loved if he feels less needed.
And Aziraphale has a long, long history of being belittled and controlled by the "love" of Heaven, and tailoring himself and his expectations to suit.
I'm not saying that the relationship is turning abusive here, and I don't think assigning blame is relevant or useful. The truth is that neither one of them has any idea how an open, healthy relationship - even an ordinary friendship, much less the eternal-life partnership that they can only find with each other - is constructed. It didn't matter so much when they were frenemy agents, when they could talk in code and work together while officially opposing each other, working for different sides and conspiring to subvert both. They could find a balance, pulling opposite ends of a rope and whirling around to create an equilibrium of two. But they have only ever officially operated from within abusive hierarchies.
Aziraphale survived as a Heavenly agent by lying and making himself small and making excuses for his indulgences. Crowley survived by swaggering and bragging and being ready at a moment's notice to burst into action in order to maintain control of his situation. You don't lightly leave behind survival tactics when they stop being necessary. You don't easily recognize yourself falling back into old habits when they stop being useful and start to hurt you.
Crowley loves his plants - they seem to be the only furnishings of his flat that he took with him, leaving behind his da Vinci cartoon, his eagle lectern souvenir, his wrestling angels statue, and who knows what else? He loves his plants, and he terrorizes them for their own good. He loves his car, and he won't let it try new things. He loves his angel - and he won't move in with him, won't share information, won't trust him with the car, doesn't listen well enough to hear what he's trying to say or have a good productive argument about the issues behind the issue of protecting Jim - and here they are.
They have no idea what they're doing.
But Metatron knows exactly what it's doing.
Good Omens Season 2 spoilers ahead, obviously.
So I, like all us fans, was screaming-crying-throwing hands at the Last Ten Minutes of Episode Six, shouting that Aziraphale better be already preparing that apology dance, the bastard.
But when I calmed down a bit, I realised the person I was actually mad at — was Crowley.
It's no wonder that it was he, and not Aziraphale, who got the talk about not communicating enough. Because it was he who wanted something else out of their relationship and never said a word.
To Aziraphale, they were already an "us" after Armageddidnt. He was with Crowley, not hiding from Heaven or Hell, calling the Bentley "our car", casually touching him etc. I don't think he even thought about more physical relationship, and, apart from that, they really were an item from his point of view.
And he never stopped being an angel and wanting to do good. He totally wouldn't go back to Heaven and betray Crowley, but that's not what he was offered! He was manipulated into thinking that he was going to be in a position of power, able to actually make a difference, and with Crowley by his side.
And the Second Coming? Aziraphale only learned that it was what Heaven was planning when he took that elevator. But Crowley? Crowley knew. And never bothered to tell his angel. And now Aziraphale is going to face the music alone.
So... yeah. If you wanted kisses and holding hands, if what you had was not enough for you, then maybe you should have said something sooner, Crowley.
Not withholding the important information or acting like you were betrayed by Aziraphale just being himself.
I wish them a happy ending, I do. I love them both. I just don't think it's only Aziraphale who has to learn something out of all this.
— as always, i’d appreciate any thoughts or comments you may have, and please drop a like and/or reblog if you enjoy reading ♡
The movies lied—college really isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. Who even has the time to constantly go drinking and clubbing, deliver assignments on time, maintain a social life, all the while be expected to have a blooming love life? Definitely not you, and not when there’s a pain in your ass by the name of Jeon Jungkook.
The douchebag in your music theory class who’s always trying to one up you.
To be fair, he’s not a bad person (probably), but he’s just so goddamn annoying.
It’s only your first semester, but you’ve already found a sworn enemy in Jungkook. The funny thing is, you and him share the same circle, and your friends all adore him to bits.
Curse Kim Taehyung for bringing you into this mess.
(You got a job at the campus library nearly halfway into the semester, and that’s where you met Taehyung, a fellow part-time librarian and full-time stressed out college student. Though your majors and interests don’t exactly align—he’s studying Art History while you’re pursuing a Music degree—you somehow hit it off and he became your first real friend at college.
Taehyung introduced you to Jimin, his roommate, who then brought in someone that you recognized from class named Hoseok but had never really talked to before and… tragically for you, the bane of your existence, Jeon Jungkook.)
At every party and get-together that Taehyung drags you to, Jungkook is there. There was a part of you that hoped he was only an asshole to you because you two had been competing for first place in class, and it wouldn’t have mattered that much if the person with the highest GPA wasn’t given the opportunity to intern at an up-and-coming record label where one of the executives was old friends with your professor.
Neither of you got it in the end; the professor said you and Jungkook had too much “unhealthy” competition going on and decided to bestow the honor upon the third highest ranked in class which was Hoseok. (Okay, that was good for him, but still.)
Anyway, even outside of academia, Jungkook is insufferable only toward you while he’s a ray of sunshine to literally everybody else. You’ve seen him interact with other people, and you’ve witnessed how his attitude completely switches up when it comes to you. No, whenever he talks to you, sweet and bubbly Jungkook immediately morphs into a cocky and patronizing version of the man.
He probably thinks he’s so much better than you just because he happens to have a great singing voice (not that you would ever admit this to him) and you can’t belch out a single note to save your life. But newsflash buddy! Not every music major has to end up a singer.
Taehyung, Jimin, and even Hoseok have assured you that Jungkook doesn’t hate you, but who are they to say? They’ve never received the same treatment as you.
“On Earth, We’re Briefly Gorgeous?” You skim the cover and quirk an eyebrow. “Huh. I didn’t know you’re into stuff like this, Jeon.”
He isn’t. Though he was surprised that the school library even had a shelf for contemporary autobiographies, the only reason he borrowed it was because Taehyung mentioned in passing that it’s one of your favorite books.
“There’s a lot of things you don’t know about me,” he mumbles under his breath, which you don’t catch.
When Jungkook lingers, you look at him in confusion. “I already know who you are. You don’t have to give me your student ID. You can go.”
“You should, uh, check if I damaged the book or something.”
“Did you?” you narrow your eyes at him.
“No, no… I mean– Just do it, will you?”
Rolling your eyes in annoyance, you reach for the book but his hand shoots out to stop you. “Not right now,” he stammers. “Later.”
What the hell are you doing? You want to bark at him, but it’s nearly 9 o’clock and this tiresome day has drained the life out of you.
After you finished your last exam this morning, all you wanted was to go back to your room and get some much needed rest. But alas, the universe had different plans. Taehyung begged you to cover his shift at the library because the dumbass messed up the dates and bought his bus ticket home today instead of tomorrow to visit his family. You’d do anything for your friends so naturally you said yes, at the expense of your physically deteriorating form.
Right now, you just want to teleport to your dorm and sleep till the sun swallows up the Earth. “Fine,” you grumble, not having the energy to deal with whatever Jungkook’s schtick is, “anything else?”
He purses his lips, glances between you and the book, then shakes his head. He taps his fingers lightly against the wooden desk between you, like he wants to say something else but doesn’t know how to verbalize the words. If you weren’t so tired, maybe you’d even make fun of him for getting his panties in such a twist.
“Okay, um,” he says finally and turns to leave, “goodnight then.”
You only hum and wave a disinterested hand at his retreating form, not caring that he can’t see you. Leaning back against the chair that offers you zero lumbar support and has been killing your back for the past few hours, you groan loudly.
The library barely had anyone coming in today, probably because finals were over and everyone was either recovering from nights lost to exam preparation, or out drinking to celebrate the end of the semester. You highly doubt there would be anyone dropping by ten minutes before closing time, so you push yourself to your feet and start to gather your things.
After entering Jungkook’s name into the computer and ticking his borrowed book as ‘returned’, you flip through it boredly per his request.
A piece of yellow paper slips from the pages and falls to the floor. When you go to pick it up, you freeze at the sight of a neatly scripted line in black ink. Surprise (or perhaps shock would be a better word) parts the fog in your brain.
Dinner this Saturday? – JK
The next afternoon, Jungkook comes back to the library with no book to return nor a need to borrow a new one.
“Hey,” he gives you an awkward wave as he approaches, “how’s it going?”
You give him a small smile in greeting that you know must look weird and manufactured. Never in your few months of knowing him have you ever smiled at him on purpose. “Fine, thanks.”
“Did you, um, check the book?”
You stiffen, and this makes him stiffen. Jungkook knows you saw it.
Do you say yes? No? What’s the best course of action here? What did he even mean? Why would he ask you out for dinner? What does he want? Why was he acting so self-conscious about it? God, why isn’t Taehyung here to help you through this crisis?
Your lips tighten into a thin line as you contemplate your plan. Jungkook has never seemed shy around you. Maybe he’s just trying to be nice because all your friends are home to see their families, and you and him are the only ones who aren’t. Maybe he just pities you because he thinks you might be lonely.
“Yes,” you decide.
“And?” he prompts, growing more nervous by the second. What is up with this guy?
“Do you need to talk about something over dinner?”
“No, not really,” he says, scratching the back of his head. “I just want to hang out with you, one on one. Get to know each other better, y’know…”
“Just the two of us?” you narrow your eyes at him skeptically. “Are you… asking me on a date?” That can’t be possible, right? But then, he was acting weird when he was returning the book. And he’s here again now, anxiously glancing between you and the door like he’s ready to bolt any second.
You can’t figure out what it means.
Is he messing with you? Is it all part of his plan to trick you into dressing up for him only to stand you up and humiliate you? He’s annoying, but you’ve never thought of him as someone who would do such a thing.
No… Jungkook might be the most irritating prick on the planet but he’s not that douchey.
“Yes?” he doesn’t sound so sure of it. He looks like he’s summoning the ground to swallow him whole under your scrutinizing gaze. “I mean,” he adds in a small voice, “if you want...”
It isn’t that you don’t find Jungkook attractive. God knows that man is blessed with looks that people dream about, but you suppose the hostility between you two has distracted you from that fact. Irritation eclipses attraction.
But that irritation is nowhere to be found now, not even an inkling. There’s mostly perplexity, and that certainly isn’t enough to trick you into thinking that Jungkook isn’t one of the most handsome men you’ve laid eyes on.
You can’t think properly in this stupefied state. The words slip out before you can make sense of the whole situation. “Sure, yeah, okay.”
Jungkook looks just as surprised as you are once you realize what you just said. Your eyes widen and your lips part. You should definitely take it back, this is absurd! Where’s your goddamn voice when you need it?
“Yeah? It’s a date?” he asks, gazing down at you with those stupid doe eyes that you haven’t fully taken in until now. They compel you to nod.
“Yeah… it’s a date.”
What is happening?
A few seconds pass, and part of you thinks he’ll start laughing in the middle of the library but you’d be the one embarrassed.
Instead, Jungkook gives you a big bunny grin that has you startled. You’ve never been on the receiving end of it before, having gotten used to his arrogant smirk and condescending tone the entire semester. But this is clearly something you didn’t expect. It’s kind of… beautiful, actually.
Before you can react, he’s already headed for the door. He waves enthusiastically, nerves seemingly gone now, and calls out in a loud voice that you would usually frown at and shush people for. “I’ll text you!”
What if it ends up a huge disaster? Well, then you suppose you’d go back to hating each other and forget the whole thing happened. But there’s a possibility even worse that you can’t even begin to fathom right now. If it goes well, would there be another date?
What should you wear? What’s a good outfit that doesn’t make it seem like you’re trying too hard? It’s January though, should you sacrifice warmth for fashion? Where’s that pair of lace underwear that you bought last month–
Wait, why do you care?
God, why is this happening?
You were definitely overthinking this. These were the questions plaguing your every waking moment since that day at the library until this afternoon, a couple hours before your… date. Your brain went haywire the moment he left the library and evidently, it didn’t get a chance to calm down.
(When you called to tell Taehyung about it after the realization that you would actually be going on a date with Jungkook hit you like a truckload of bricks, your friend gasped and mumbled to himself something you couldn’t quite catch over the phone, something about owing money to someone.)
In the end, you settled on a fitted sweater and your favorite winter coat. Mostly because Jungkook showed up right on time and you spent too long fussing over the possibilities to think of anything else to wear.
It was awkward at first with neither of you knowing how to act. What’s a girl gotta do on a date with her arch nemesis? No one writes guides on these kinds of things, not even Buzzfeed. You actually considered shaking his hand when you saw him, but he pulled you into a loose hug before you could do anything else.
Throughout the evening, he felt like a stranger. It wasn’t the Jungkook that you’d been used to, the one who constantly volunteered to make your life a living hell.
No, tonight you were with a different Jungkook. You laughed with each other, smiled at each other, let your hand intentionally brush the other’s but never gathered enough courage to actually lace them together. There was still banter, but not the kind that you hated.
There was no trace of the jerk who always irritated you to no end and instead, Jungkook was softer, incredibly sweeter and thoughtful. You felt like you were meeting him for the first time.
It was refreshing, but also… disheartening? These past few months, you could’ve liked him rather than despise him had he shown this side of himself to you. You suppose that’s a question for another occasion; you don’t want to risk turning the mood sour.
Now, as he’s walking you back to your dorm, only one question lingers on your mind.
“Tonight was actually… really nice,” you admit shyly.
He laughs softly then. “Did you expect it to crash and burn?”
“Yes,” your lack of hesitation only spurs on his chortles. He sounds like he could be an Elmo impersonator.
Once the laughter dies down, you’re left staring at each other in front of your building. The mid January cold bites at your exposed skin, making you shiver lightly and your nose redden. Your skin heats up for a reason other than the wind.
“We’re here,” you say, lamely pointing to the front door. “Guess I should head inside…”
You watch Jungkook visibly gulp as he nods, eyes locking onto yours for a brief second before his gaze falls to the ground, then back to your face again.
You haven’t gone out with someone in a while, but you still know what should happen now.
Will he kiss you? Do you want him to kiss you? Wow, you think. You never imagined there would come a day where you would have to ponder about something like this. Taehyung would be hounding you for days if he got to pick your brain right now. Oh One Direction, just how fast the night changes indeed…
Jungkook takes a step closer and your heart involuntarily picks up a couple beats. When he leans down, it has your stomach doing somersaults. But the tingly sensation is soon replaced with disappointment when you feel his lips press against your cheek.
Damn.
“Goodnight,” he smiles when he pulls away.
You’re sure you look flushed, but it isn’t something that can’t be easily blamed on the cold. You return his smile and bid him a safe walk home before turning toward your dorm.
Once there’s some distance between you and Jungkook, you can’t help but ghost your fingers over the spot where his lips were.
Goddamn. God damn him, god damn those stupid lips and god damn those stupid eyes.
This isn’t how you imagined you would spend your semester break. The moment you set foot in your room, you know you’ll begin to analyze every single detail that happened over the last few hours. You had a good time, but didn’t he? Is that why he only pecked your cheek like you were his grandma?
Oh God, not to mention the way your heart dropped when he didn’t kiss you. On the mouth! Jeon Jungkook!
As you riffle through your cluttered purse to fetch your keycard with an even more cluttered mind, a hand lands on your shoulder. Instinctively, you gasp and jerk away.
Naturally, your heels are your downfall in this moment of hasty panic. Your purse drops to the ground as your arms flail in the air. Seconds feel like hours as you await the impending collision between your butt and the asphalt, though it never comes.
The hand that was on your shoulder is clutching your arm tightly to keep you upright. It might leave a bruise tomorrow, but at least it’s the only thing keeping you from falling ass first right now.
“Shit! I’m sorry, that was so stupid,” Jungkook stutters as he helps you steady yourself. “I called your name but you didn’t respond.”
He should be the one embarrassed, but somehow you are. When he picks up your purse and hands it to you, the awkwardness from earlier returns. You’re staring at each other again; whoever is watching the security cameras must be having a blast.
You clear your throat. “Oh, I must’ve been… thinking. Did you, uh, need anything else?”
“No,” he mutters as he fumbles with his fingers. “No, I…”
Okay, this just took a turn for the worse. This is going to be what you fixate on for the rest of the break—how you almost fell on your ass in front of Jeon Jungkook, because of Jeon Jungkook.
He seems to be having a different kind of dilemma than you though. He still has an apologetic look on his face, but he shakes his head a little more harshly than necessary, as if that would erase what just happened from existence. He clasps his hands together firmly, like he’s about to give you a sales pitch.
Fuck it, Jungkook thinks, now or never.
“I chickened out earlier,” he says and loops an arm around your waist, tugging you closer and effectively making you gasp at the suddenness. His other hand brushes your hair from your face and settles on your cheek, the one he kissed only minutes prior. “I wanted to do this.”
He leans down for the second time tonight, and this time you know what’s coming. More importantly, you know you want it to happen. Your faces are so close that you can see the small scar on his cheek; your fingers itch to trace that line of his skin. You hope there’ll be another time for that.
Still, he doesn’t kiss you just yet. He waits a moment to see if you’d pull away and when you don’t, he just smiles. Like he can’t believe this is finally happening.
His pillowy lips meet yours in a tentative greeting. It’s slow at first, you’re both just testing the waters.
A goodbye to your old dynamic now that a line has been crossed and you two can never go back to the way it was. A hello to a new beginning and to the seeds that it’s planting in your chest, right beside your heart.
His body wraps around you as his mouth envelopes your own, everything is just a little surreal that you get lightheaded. It’s kind of… nice, and you tell yourself it’s the heat radiating off his body that’s making you feel this warm.
When you pull apart, you would’ve thought it was a fever dream if it wasn't for the blush that colored his cheeks. His lips are shiny from the kiss, and his eyes are still glued to your mouth.
Okay, so maybe there are two things you’ll never forget about today: How you almost fell on your ass, and how he kissed you.
He laughs breathlessly to himself and pulls you closer, resting his forehead against yours while you remain speechless.
“I’ve been wanting to do that since your presentation on tonal systems.”
Eight Years Later
Wednesday. The absolute worst day of the week.
You can’t even remember what made you hate Wednesdays so much, but you always feel a sense of dread whenever the middle of the week rolls around. Maybe it’s because every bad news you’ve received in your life has mostly been delivered on a Wednesday. That’s why you never work, or do anything really, on this day, and given that you don’t have a traditional 9-to-5 job, it gives you more leeway to skip work anyway. It’s your own self-care day, where you allow yourself to stop worrying about anything and just be.
Nothing bad can happen if you don’t let it, right? (It’s definitely not a logical plan, but whatever, let’s just entertain this.)
When the incessant rings of your doorbell echo throughout your apartment at 7:56 on this—surprise, surprise—Wednesday morning, you already know it can’t be anything good.
Your sleep-hazed brain doesn’t allow you much to work with. It’s too early for deliveries, and all of your friends and co-workers know better than to bother you on Hump Day, least of all in the morning at that. So when you throw open your door, ready to tear a new one into this godforsaken person who woke you up from your slumber, never would you ever expect to see a ghost from your past standing in front of you. Not in a million years—because it has been years, hasn’t it?
No, not a ghost—the ghost, one who has been haunting you since the summer of your college graduation.
Him. In the flesh. In a simple black blazer thrown over a t-shirt but still looking every bit like the sun on the day he left you. Jeon Jungkook.
You must still be dreaming, right? There’s no reason for him to show up at your door after all these years of radio silence and oh yeah, especially after he—once the keeper of your heart—crushed it into pieces and even went the extra mile to cut it up like finely-chopped garlic, and left you. Besides, how does he even know where you live now? There is absolutely no reason for him to be here. It must be the bottle of rosé you wholeheartedly chugged last night while rewatching Goblin. That’s right, this is just a figment of your worst imaginatio–
“Long time no see, stranger.”
You almost jump. Oh no, it speaks. Was your wine laced with hallucinogens? Your brows knit together and your lips part in bewilderment.
In this nightmare of yours, he looks good. Jungkook always did manage to look effortlessly handsome even if he had just rolled out of bed. Still the same pillowy pink lips, same sparkling doe eyes boring into yours. His hair is styled differently, in an unfamiliar way that you’ve only been acquainted with through the photos that he gets tagged in online. He’s back to his black hair though, with zero traces of the blond head that he sported last year. You never did get a chance to see what it looked like in real life, but once in college, you and him had laughed about the possibility of him dyeing his hair golden and how it would look so terrible. That didn’t turn out to be the case, obviously.
It’s not until the figure in front of you snaps his fingers that you realize you’ve been gaping for the past few minutes. You reach a hand out to poke him in the shoulder, and you almost gasp when he doesn’t dissipate into thin air.
What the fuck.
Jungkook only chuckles. “Aren’t you gonna invite me in?”
You let yourself gape at him for another minute before you speak. “Why are you here? How do you know where I live?”
“A little birdy told me,” he smiles, but soon gives up when you remain unimpressed. “Fine, it was Tae.”
Taehyung, that fucking traitor. You make a mental note to send him a very strongly worded letter.
You exhale in annoyance. “Get to the point. What do you want?”
“So…” he starts, rubbing his hands together as he looks at you, “I’m assuming you know Jin, right?”
“Jin? Kim Seokjin?” you stare at him like he’s stupid. “Global superstar Jin? Two-time Grammy nominee Jin? Turned-down-an-offer-to-be-in-a-Bond-soundtrack Jin? The guy with the face of a Greek God and the voice of an angel? That Jin?”
He pokes a tongue into his cheek, a very Jungkook thing that you haven’t seen in a very long time. He used to do that when he was annoyed or jealous, and to be fair, they often overlapped. “Yeah, that Jin.”
“Sure,” you shrug, “I’ve heard of him.”
“Well, I’m producing his new album. No, I should be producing his new album, and…”
You raise an eyebrow, shooting him a pointed look. And? C’mon, out with it.
“He’ll only sign with us if… if we get you on board as the primary songwriter.”
If it were anyone else saying this to you, you probably would’ve jumped up and down in pure excitement and called every single person you know to brag about the international pop sensation wanting to work with you. Snatching an opportunity like this will most likely ensure that you’ll never be unemployed again, not when you’ve had a hand in creating a Kim Seokjin album. It’s the big break you’ve always dreamed of, the one to propel you forward and get your name circulating around the industry. Just imagine the kind of apartment you could get with Kim Seokjin-level royalties.
If it were anyone else asking, you would’ve fainted, woken up again, and said yes in a heartbeat. Instead, it’s your ex boyfriend who’s propositioned you out of the blue because it’s really him who needs to make this work.
In the moment—and to be fair, in the morning too—you’re not level-headed enough to weigh the pros and cons. If he’s the producer, you’d also be working with him and you don’t think you have the capacity to handle being in the same space as Jeon Jungkook, and even for months on end until the album is fleshed out. But it isn’t even just that, there’s a petty voice inside your head screaming at you to forgo whatever success you may garner from this project, just for the sake of fucking him over.
You’ve heard enough chatter about Jin to know that he isn’t someone that can be sweet-talked and bargained with. If he wants something, he has to get it. If not, the man walks.
You succumb to the pettiness. “I’ll have you know, my email is just blowing up with offers. I’m doing quite well for myself.”
Okay, it’s not completely untrue. Your inbox might not be on the verge of combustion from an overload of messages, but you have made a name for yourself. Since your project with Agust D last year, your songwriting has definitely been a sought after commodity, but not anywhere near the circles of Kim Seokjin though.
The smirk on Jungkook’s face drops, and in its place a smile blooms across his lips, an earnest smile. “I know.”
You’re taken aback by the sincerity, and how you still think his smile is beautiful enough to part way for the sun on cloudy days. Like Kim Taehyung, your own heart becomes a traitor when it misses a beat.
Jungkook’s acknowledgment of your achievements has you blinking at him to make sure you heard him right. It takes you a moment to regain your composure and straighten up. “Oh… Then you know how it is. I don’t have time to take on another project. Off you go now.”
“C’mon, you won’t even consider it for an old friend?”
Your mouth sets in a grim line as you stare at him, and he knows from the way your jaw clenches that he’s said the wrong thing.
No, he’s not an old friend. And while he knows of your achievements and that you’ve created somewhat of a decent life for yourself, he doesn’t know that your first day of work started with false bravado and nearly ended with a breakdown in a lavender-scented bathroom stall when you remembered that the only person you wanted to talk to about your day wouldn’t be there when you got home.
He doesn’t know you used to get so shitfaced on a weekly basis that Taehyung became genuinely concerned for your health at one point, that he and Jimin had to sit you down for a talk before they thought your liver would give out.
He doesn’t know how much it fucking hurts to be suckerpunched by someone you thought was the love of your life, to be disregarded and abandoned as if years together held the significance of mere days in the end. To be left without a single word as to why you weren’t good enough for him.
So no, Jungkook isn’t an old friend. Sometimes you think maybe it would have been better if that’s all he ever was to you.
“We’re not friends,” you declare eerily calmly that you even surprise yourself. The door closes in his face with a click. The wood under your palm should feel light, but somehow it weighs a thousand pounds now.
Old friend, you mull over the word in your head. Is that all you’ve been reduced to? You’re reminded once again that you hate Jeon Jungkook, and this sensation poking into your heart like a sharp needle is just your accumulated disdain toward him—nothing more.
For a split second you wonder if you should have let yourself feel that January cold instead of his warmth.
You can’t go back to sleep now that your entire morning has been ruined.
[08:38] You: Kim Taehyung.
[09:09] You: ?????
[09:09] You: that’s all u have to say ???
As irritated as you are at Taehyung, you refrain from calling to yell at him while he’s at work. So when he casually strolls into your apartment at lunch with a takeaway bag of two poké bowls from your favorite diner, you know he’s here to spill the beans. (And also to butter you up; he even splurged on a side of tobiko and a large taro boba for when you’re finished.) The sight of the food dilutes your anger; you gotta hand it to him—Kim Taehyung knows the way to your heart. (Hint: it’s through your stomach.)
The moment he sets his and your food on the dining table, you immediately narrow your eyes at him. “Explain, Kim.”
Taehyung runs a hand through his hair, sighing as he begins to mix the content of your bowl for you. “Jungkook asked me where you lived like a month ago, said he needed to ask for a work favor. But then he didn’t do anything after that so I forgot about it.”
“Why didn’t you tell me when he asked?”
“He told me not to.”
You cross your arms in front of your chest, mouth hanging open to gape at him, flabbergasted. “And you listened to him? You’re supposed to be on my side!” Are you childish for wanting Taehyung to be on your side? He has always been closer to you; he was your friend first. “I can’t believe you’d do me dirty like that, Tae. I feel so betrayed right now. I got you in the divorce and Jungkook got Jimin. I can’t believe you’d go running off to daddy like that.”
He scrunches his face in distaste. “Ugh, please don’t call Jungkook my daddy.” He pushes the bowl toward you.
Silence settles over your apartment aside from the sounds of cutlery against ceramic. As you munch on your rice and spicy mayo salmon, Taehyung asks warily. “You good though?”
Jungkook has always been a sensitive subject, clearly. With your shared circle of friends from college and even now with your mutual connections in the industry, you’re surprised that you haven’t run into him at all in the past five years.
You only grumble around a mouthful of food. You take your sweet time with your poké and when you’re finished, you wash it down with a generous sip of the boba Taehyung brought over. Salmon and milk tea are probably not the best combo though.
“Positively dandy.” It’s just my ex who I haven’t seen in half a decade and would’ve liked to never see again for the rest of my miserable life. “Live, laugh, love, Kim.”
He only squints at you. Though your face is devoid of any emotion—you have to praise your own poker face when someone brings up Jungkook, it’s taken you a hell of a long time to master—your bitter tone is a dead giveaway of how much the surprise reunion is affecting you.
You should’ve suspected that Kim Taehyung was up to no good when he suddenly called to treat you to lunch two days later. The man even insisted that you order the most expensive thing on the menu, something that you and him have only reserved for celebrations.
You never thought that one day, food would be your downfall.
A figure slides into the chair next to yours after you gulp down the last of your drink, and it became all too clear what Kim Taehyung had been scheming. You should really be more cautious when people randomly start offering you food; it’s becoming a problem.
You look at the intruder with wide eyes, fingers still gripping the glass. “What are you doing here?”
“Listen.” It’s Taehyung who speaks up, drawing your attention away from Jungkook. “Just hear him out–”
“Kim Taehyung!” You kick him in the shin under the table, to which he yelps and gets a few heads turning in the semi-crowded restaurant. “You backstabbing bitch!”
“God, you’re so dramatic. Just hear him out, okay? I think this could be really good for your career.”
Your jaw clenches, and both men notice the way you slightly scooch away from the one next to you. Damn them and damn you. You’re always more pliant with a satiated stomach; maybe that’s why Jungkook didn’t show up until after you had finished eating.
Waving a hand in the air in defeat, you motion for your ex to do whatever it is that he came here to do. Mostly, you want to waste his time just to say no to him in the end.
Jungkook immediately launches into a whole speech about how this could be Jin’s greatest album yet if they had you on the team. Apparently Jin has been itching to sink his claws into you ever since he found out you worked with Yoongi; you knew the two of them were friends, but you didn’t realize that your work even drew that kind of attention.
As the man explains what the album concept would be, your resolve almost breaks. Fuck, if it doesn’t sound like something right up your alley. You’re already envisioning everything you could do with this album, the lyrics that are practically writing themselves inside your head. Nevertheless, it isn’t that simple. There’s always a but, and that but is sitting right beside you, droning on about how this album might actually be the one to score Jin his first Grammy win. Jungkook didn’t seem fazed when he saw you the other day, and he sure isn’t fazed now. You’re supposed to be someone he used to love, but the way he’s so nonchalant makes you feel like you were never more than just a mere acquaintance.
When he’s finished, you don’t respond. Instead, you turn to your friend. “Seriously, Tae,” you scoff, glaring at the man sitting across from you. This is the second time that Kim Taehyung has betrayed you in a span of two days; one more strike and you might just key his car. “I can’t believe you ran off to daddy again.”
He rolls his eyes at you while Jungkook raises a brow in amusement and leans back against his chair. “I told you not to say that,” he grumbles. “But honestly, I’m saying this as your best friend–”
“My best friend wouldn’t use my greatest weakness to trick me.”
“Oh my God, just—listen, do you not see what an insane opportunity this is? It’s Kim Seokjoon, for crying out loud. Even I know who that is and you tell me all the time that I have zero knowledge of pop culture.”
“Kim Seokjin,” Jungkook pipes in before you can.
“Oh, shit,” Taehyung scratches his head awkwardly, “right, well, my point still stands. You’ve always wanted something like this to happen, so why are you doing this to yourself now? Just because it’s Ju–”
“Tae.” Your gaze hardens as you look at him, and Jungkook sees how you and the older man communicate without having to utter a single word. He never understood the connection, the bond, between the two of you but he has always appreciated the fact that you have someone like Taehyung. Someone who understands you in ways that he couldn’t, who looks out for you and takes care of you no matter what, who made sure you wouldn’t fall when Jungkook was the one to shatter the ground beneath you.
After a minute, Taehyung softens. “I’m just saying,” he nudges your foot under the table to ease the tension, “when are you gonna get a chance like this again? Some things aren’t worth sacrificing your dreams for.”
He’s right, and you know you’re being childish. When are you going to get an offer of this magnitude? This is your dream; this is something you’ve been working toward all these years. Are you really about to let it pass you by because of Jungkook?
You turn away from both of them and close your eyes, sighing as you expel the weight in your chest. “Fuck,” you mutter under your breath, “my life is a dumpster fire waiting to blow up. Fucking hell.”
“Language, sailor,” Jungkook scolds you lightly. “How can someone with such a foul mouth write lyrics that beautiful? You never used to swear this much.”
You choose to fire back at him rather than focus on the fact that he listens to your songs. “The keyword here is “used to”. You don’t know me anymore.”
He stares at you, and once again he knows he’s dug his own grave, earning even more points in your bad books. He only meant to be playful, but now he doesn’t know how to respond to that.
Thankfully, Taehyung chimes in. “It can’t hurt to think about it right? It’s a good opportunity.”
Your brows knit together and you fist the hem of your shirt. You look a little distressed, and Jungkook remembers how you used to do this to will yourself before you committed to something you really don’t want to. It used to be research papers for psychology classes, but now it’s him.
“Fine, I will think about it.”
“That’s all I’m asking,” Jungkook says, his voice a little smaller now. He hands you the folder that he’s been holding, and you gulp when his hand brushes yours, just barely. “Here’s the creative brief. Let me know what you think, alright? My business card is in there.”
As Taehyung watches the two of you, he isn’t entirely convinced if this is such a good idea anymore. Career-wise, you’d be out of your mind not to snatch this offer right off the bat; but emotionally speaking, there’s still something that he can’t properly decipher between you and Jungkook.
He sees the way the younger man glances at you, and the way you wouldn’t look at him. Taehyung has noticed how your tone has grown subconsciously more defensive and overly nonchalant the past couple of days, as if you’re trying to convince yourself and everybody else that you’re doing fine. For years, you’ve been claiming that you despise Jungkook and that the resentment you have toward him will never change, but no one has really been able to confirm that hypothesis. You haven’t been in the same room since college, and it’s a hell of a lot easier to say you’re over someone when you aren’t standing in front of them and looking into their eyes.
Nonetheless, it’s his duty as your friend to make sure you choose what’s best for you, and this—no matter how ludicrous it sounds to you—will do you more good than harm. Whatever may happen, he knows you’ll never forgive yourself if you miss this chance. And just like how Taehyung has helped you through your toughest days before, he can do it again. You’ve recovered from Jungkook once, you can do it a second time.
…Right?
Naturally, you had to go and get sloshed that night. Alone, because Taehyung had a work function that he couldn’t skip and though he promised to take you out to drown your sorrows the next day instead, you just couldn’t wait to forget about Jungkook.
On his birthday the year of your breakup, you had called him to wish him a happy birthday even though he never made an effort to reach out to you at all after you went your separate ways; or rather, he went his own way and you were left there all alone. The line rang, and rang, and finally when the call connected, you felt the air get knocked out of your lungs at the sound of a woman’s voice filtering through the speaker, airy and giggly.
“Is this… Jungkook’s phone?” you tried to keep your voice from breaking.
“Jungkook?” the woman sounded confused. “I’m sorry, I think you have the wrong number.”
You promptly ended the call afterward, not knowing whether to feel relieved that no, he didn’t get a new girlfriend, or dejected because he changed his number and didn’t tell you.
Well, of course, why would he? You broke up and Jungkook made it blatantly obvious that he didn’t want anything to do with you anymore. It hurt you to admit it—something that had once been so unimaginable now taking over every aspect of your life—that you had become strangers who once meant the world to each other.
Shit happens. People wake up and fall out of love everyday. People change, then they leave. Life goes on.
It didn’t mean much, but you deleted the number that night.
Now, as you’re staring at this new set of digits you took from the business card Jungkook had given you, anxiety bubbles in your stomach. The fact that you’re actually considering it, means you’ll say yes. It is an incredible opportunity, Taehyung didn’t need to do all of that for you to see it. But partly because it’s Jungkook who’s asking, and you’re weak despite how many times you’ve claimed to hate his guts. Despite wanting to say no with your entire being, he affects you in ways that you never thought were still possible. Though you haven’t agreed to his proposition, your mind is already picturing what will happen when history inevitably repeats itself.
You’ll say yes, he’ll take what he needs from you, and he will leave. You will go back to being strangers again. The numbers staring at you in blue light will be another set for you to delete.
That’s why Jimin is here now, at the wine bar where he’s found himself with Taehyung so many times before just to pick you up and drag your drunken self home.
But Taehyung isn’t here tonight because of the aforementioned work event so Jimin brought backup—it just happens that it’s the same person you're trying your hardest to forget about.
(They were lounging on Jungkook’s couch playing video games when the call came and interrupted Jimin. When Taehyung’s voice rang through the speakers to inform him of your situation and how Jimin would have to handle it alone this time, Jungkook’s curiosity was instantly piqued.
“I’ll take you,” he said to the older man. “You didn’t drive here anyway.”
“Oh, you’re with Kook?” Taehyung asked hesitantly, then went quiet for a moment after Jimin confirmed. “Yeah, sure, you should take him with you. She probably won’t remember it…”)
“Jiminie,” you whine loudly once your friend helps you into the car, Jiminieee.”
“Yes, what? I’m right here.”
“I saw Jungkook again. Twice.”
“Oh?” He looks at the younger man, unsure of how to proceed. “How did it go?”
Jungkook watches your face in the rearview mirror. Your hooded eyes are looking out the window, blinking lazily every few seconds before closing completely shut. He thinks you might have fallen asleep until you speak up a few minutes later.
“He didn’t ask how I’ve been doing. He just showed up out of the blue because he needed something from me and didn’t even bother to ask if my life’s been okay or anything. I–It made me feel so insignificant.”
For a moment, the already stuffy air in the car thickens. You sound like you’re sober, like you’re saying all of this under the guise of inebriation to see how he would react. But before either man can respond, you’re lolling your head to the side and mumbling incoherently again. Jungkook swallows, and Jimin remains quiet for the rest of the drive. The only sounds are your occasional hiccups and giggles.
When the car pulls up to your apartment complex, Jimin is too preoccupied with hauling you out of the vehicle to notice Jungkook’s hesitation to help him lug you into the building, but he does anyway. He hasn’t touched you in years, and you won’t even remember it in the morning.
It’s been so long, but when his arm wraps securely around your waist, it seems like no time has passed at all. His hand on your body still feels familiar and not as foreign as he would expect. Since you’re mostly leaning against Jungkook, it stirs a strange sensation in his gut when your head falls to rest in the crook of his neck.
The elevator ride only lasts a few minutes, but he can’t focus with the way your warm breath is fanning his skin. When he crashed your lunch date with Taehyung 12 hours earlier, he didn’t expect the day would end like this—with you in his arms again, though the circumstances could’ve been better.
Once you make it to your door, you immediately perk up. “Oh?” You turn to Jungkook, as if you’ve only just noticed him for the first time tonight. “Chimmy, who’s your friend here?”
Jimin doesn’t reply, too busy ruffling through the chaos in your bag to find your keys and letting Jungkook hold you up by himself. (He never understands why women carry so many useless things around. The only things a person should need to bring with them outside are keys, phone and wallet. Maybe a pack of gum and condoms. Why do you even have a flask of vodka when you were already headed to a bar?)
When he takes too long, you turn to him and whisper. “Bitch, your friend is so cute!” (Only you think you’re whispering.) Jungkook chuckles as he tightens his grip on you. He can’t help but think you’re adorable—you’ve always been a cute drunk in his eyes, though if you would probably smack yourself over the head if you were aware of the words coming out of your mouth. It’s nice to hear that you still find some part of him tolerable.
Jimin lets out a triumphant sigh when he finally pulls your keys from the bag. The way he navigates your apartment in the dark and makes a beeline for what Jungkook assumes is your bedroom makes him wonder how many times the older man has done this whenever you’ve had one too many. Jungkook purposefully, albeit awkwardly, stands in the middle of your living room, glancing at your open door at Jimin who’s setting you on the bed and struggling to take off your jacket because you keep flailing your arms trying to hug him. Jungkook could help, but he feels like being in your home is already pushing his luck, let alone your bedroom, even if you aren’t quite conscious of his presence.
He takes the liberty of looking around, smiling to himself when he sees traces of you in every corner. Picture frames are scattered across your apartment—of you and your friends, your family, even Taehyung’s dog Yeontan because you love the little fluff ball so much. Dainty trinkets from your travels and art prints that you always said were pretentious but you secretly liked them anyway.
No photos of you and him, but that makes sense of course.
Jimin emerges from your bedroom after a while, leaving the door ajar to see if you’re sleeping soundly before they leave. This is the first time in years that he has seen you and Jungkook in such close vicinity of each other. Sure, you’re drunk out of your mind, but still.
“She didn’t mean what she said earlier,” he says as he hands Jungkook a glass of water.
“She did. It’s fine, it’s not like she said anything wrong,” he takes a sip to wash away the slight sting creeping up his spine. “Of course I wanna know how she’s been, hyung. I just didn’t think I had the right to ask. I didn’t know it made her feel that way.”
Jimin sighs, unsure of what to say. Wounds that he thought had scabbed over are starting to bleed again, but this time it seems like it’s affecting the both of you. You were once each other’s safe haven, but now the waters are murky, and no one has a single clue on how to chart them.
A couple of sentences, but this might be the most that Jungkook has talked about you in years. You’re in the same circle of friends, your name was bound to come up in conversation. Whenever it happened, he would simply not contribute anything to the topic, or excuse himself to go to the bathroom until chatter about you has stopped.
He has always refused to disclose anything about the breakup when anyone asked. No one knows what really happened back then; not his brother, not his closest friends, and certainly not you.
