Lost & Found

When Leo and Vincent go tumbling into soft, green grass, it's immediately apparent that something has gone terribly wrong.

These aren't the cobble streets of Sablier.

"What the hell--?!" Vincent gasps in exasperation as he scrambles to his feet. He paces a few steps in one direction, then back in the other, his usually aloof demeanor disrupted by bewilderment. "Where are we--? How-- How did you do that?!"

Leo, however, is quiet as he pushes himself up from the ground. His expression is hidden, save for his severe frown. But he watches the other man carefully through his bangs.

"why did you kill him?" he finally asks, voice uncharacteristically stern.

Vincent turns to him with wide-eyed confusion. "He was going to kill you."

"no, he wasn't," Leo argues, tone rising. His hands curl into fists under his ruffled sleeves. "i was going to agree! just until i could get Elliot somewhere safe!! i could figure a way out later, but you--!!!"

"Don't you think he expected that?" Vincent asks with a condescendingly sympathetic note to his voice. "That man was an idiot and a spineless coward. But he wasn't careless."

Leo goes quiet. Vincent is right. And that hurts to admit. But the Duke Nightray had been all too happy to use his only remaining son as a bargaining chip. There was no doubt in his mind that cruel man would find a way to keep the two separate, to keep Elliot's life on the line, up until the very moment that Humpty Dumpty dragged him screaming into the Abyss--

A sudden wave of nausea nearly has Leo wretching at the thought. He brings a hand to his mouth, head down to hide his eyes. He doesn't move as he feels Vincent approach. But when the other man tries to put a reassuring hand on his shoulder, Leo looks up quickly. He knocks Vincent back with a harsh shove.

"don't touch me!!"

Vincent holds up his hands in surrender. "Yes, Master."

"and stop--! talking like that." Leo's shouting dims to an irritated, defeated grumble as he looks away again.

"...As you wish." Vincent coos with a bright smile that makes Leo's stomach turn.

"that's not much better...."

Vincent just tilts his head to the side, closing his eyes for a second as he shrugs innocently. "Uhm, I do have to ask. Leo... Where the hell are we?"

The question makes Leo hunch his shoulders. He wants to sink into himself. He wants to disappear.

"....i dont know," he admits shamefully.

There's a pause between them.

"i. meant to go to the last place i visited. we should have ended up near the orphanage in Sablier. but this. isn't..."

"This definitely isn't Sablier," Vincent remarks.

Leo flinches. He brings his hands up to hug himself.

"this isn't our universe," he mumbles.

There's a long, long pause.

Vincent glances around himself again. It had been somewhere long after midnight when they had disappeared from the Duke Nightray's secret study, but now the sun shines bright overhead. Though it's cold as any winter, the grass beneath them is tall and green. They stand in the middle of a field, a vast forest behind them, a small lake somewhere in the distance.

And one more detail, noticable to the both of them.

No golden lights.

No glitter.

No connection to the Abyss whatsoever.

"Well you brought us here, can you get us back...?"

Leo eases his grip on his own arms just a little. "i-i. have a little device. but i--" He swallows thickly and looks down at the ground. "--must have dropped it...?"

Vincent turns in small circles, looking down at the grass at his feet. But Leo falls to his knees, searching with growing desperation as another wave of nausea builds deep in his stomach.

He crawls through the grass, far beyond a reasonable radius from where he'd landed. Vincent watches sympathetically.

Finally, Leo slams a frustrated fist into the ground. Unable to choke back his tears anymore, he sits back, pulls his knees to his chest, and buries his face in his hands.

Once again, he's ruined everything.

He feels Vincent's presence as the other man kneels in front of him and only hunches further into himself.

"...That's alright. We'll figure something else out," Vincent suggests, though his tone is unconvincing.

Leo shakes his shaggy head without looking up.

"If you dropped it back in that office, maybe Elliot's picked it up. I'm sure he'll be looking for you--"

Finally, Leo raises his head. Staring through the gaps in his bangs, his starry eyes meet Vincent's mismatched red and gold with a hateful scowl.

"don't talk about Elliot like you care about him," Leo warns.

"I do care about Elliot, though," Vincent assures, unphased by Leo's spiteful tone. "He's the only one in that family who ever gave Gilbert and I a chance. He was happy for him when everyone else resented Gil for Contracting with Raven. It's only because of him that my brother was able to live in that house without forgetting how to smile."

Leo is quiet, searching the other man's face. Vincent stands, offering a hand out. After a moment's hesitation, Leo takes it.

"you're the Headhunter though. you... you killed his brothers..." he comments as he allows the other to help him to his feet.

"Now hold on," Vincent holds up a finger. "I'll admit to killing Fred and Uncle Richard. Those two despised Gilbert, and I caught them conspiring to do away with the both of us. I couldn't allow that," he explains. "I would do anything to protect Gil...... That's a sentiment I think you can understand, right?"

Leo glances away.

After all, wouldn't he do anything to protect Elliot...?

"But I didn't have anything to do with Claude and Ernest."

Leo quickly looks at him again.

"are you trying to say there's... another Headhunter?"

"It seems that way."

Leo stares at him through those bangs, until Vincent continues.

"Someone else must have a Chain that's a copy of mine. Or able to imitate her, somehow."

"then. Elliot is still in danger...."

Vincent takes a deep breath, giving Leo a sympathetic, tight-lipped smile as he exhales. The smaller man looks away again.

"It's possible. But whoever that is, has never shown themself again. For now, at least, I think it's safe to tell ourselves that he'll be alright. Unless you can think of anyone who would want that boy dead..."

Leo shakes his head.

"See? Let's worry about the things we can control. For instance..." Vincent reaches out to straighten the robe Leo wears, only to be swatted away. "It's only going to get colder out here. We should look for some kind of shelter. If we can find civilization, maybe we could contact someone, somehow." He looks past Leo, down towards the lake in the distance, and squints.

That suggestion gives Leo an idea. It's a long shot, but....

"do you have your phone?"

Vincent blinks a few times, then quickly reaches into the pocket of his overcoat. "I-- do. But I already tried it, while you were searching for that other device. There's no service here..."

Leo snatches it from him anyway.

When he was in Sablier, that app would load even when his texts wouldn't send. Maybe, just maybe.....

As quickly as he'd grabbed it, though, Leo hurls the phone into the ground.

"dammit..."

"I told you," Vincent sighs. He picks it up, and gives the new crack a frown. "I think there's a house down by that lake. They could have internet..... Mmmm. Does the internet work across other.... Universes? Wait. Really? How... Where did you get this... Dohicke ly in the first place???"

In the shock of the moment, he had glossed over that little detail. But now, it starts to really sink in how absurd that sounds.

Leo takes a deep, deep breath.

"...i'll explain that, if you explain what's going on," he offers, already starting in the direction of that lake.

Sweeping away his competition with a constant lead and a final victory by 22%, Shen (Yuan) Qingqiu has officially beaten Qi Rong and been crowned the MXTX character that was/would be most insufferable if given access to the internet!

In the end, it turns out that this whole elaborate tournament was for naught. Even Qi Rong, the man voted more annoying that 63 other characters, cannot hold a candle to the sheer degree of insufferable that we know our dear Peerless Cucumber was and would be. Absolutely nobody can compare to Shen Yuan's canon keyboard warrior antics.

Thank you all for joining me on this journey! I hope everyone had fun voting in this tournament, as I know I had a lot of fun running things and watching everyone's hot takes. Shen Yuan may have rendered all but the very final round of voting moot with his sheer loveable obnoxiousness, but maybe the real most insufferable people online are the friends we made along the way :).
