Why do I do this to myself
So long story short instead of being bitter about being cheated out of learning french in the 7th grade for almost 20 years. I decided to just learn the damned language. I've been studying for 2-3ish months. So what does my dumb ass do? "Let's try to translate a chapter of one my fics" It's been 2 hours and I was able to do just under 200 words of the fic. This has been so damned difficult. Upside it has been a good learning experience and https://bonpatron.com/ has been what I'm hoping is a life saver when it comes to grammar. It explaining what rules I broke; though I'm assuming as with any spell checker it isn't perfect, but I think I can get by just fine for where I am at in learning. Any how i decided to pick
"The long road of how starting a fight with superman over clone parenting eventually lead to Danny Phantom become God"
So here are those 200ish words I hope aren't absolutely terrible.
Now to go back and finish so I can move on with my night. Also any advice would be appreciated if you have it.

Puzzlefic Recs
These Days We Celebrate / Reconfiguration by Phoebeus
Original synopsis: “Originally a series of canon-compliant stories spanning the six month gap between the defeat of Pegasus and the arrival of Otogi, it now includes a branch-off story that changes the climax of the Millennium World arc and explores what would have happened if Atem had gotten his own body a month prior to leaving for Egypt. [Manga-canon, Puzzleshipping]”
Type: Series of oneshots + one multichap longfic
Word count: 300k+ altogether
Rating: G/T/E
Warnings: None
Status: Complete
Times read: 3 times for the whole series, at least 5 or 6 for Reconfiguration specifically
Standout characters/aspects: Yuugi's mom & Honda
Notes: The holy grail. The puzzle fic to end all puzzle fics. Nothing beats it. It aligns almost 98% with my personal headcanons, & the small things we disagree on are contextualized in a way that makes sense in the story. Yuugi's mom is iconic in this story, & my own interpretations of her lean heavily on her portrayal in this series.
Haunted House Sweet Home by InkFlavored
Original synopsis: “Yugi doesn't believe in ghosts. He never has and, up until now, he thought he never would. But when he moves into his new apartment, things start disappearing, doors start slamming, and an ancient crown has it out for him. He's forced to face reality: he's living in a haunted house. But will he be ‘living’ there for long?”
Type: Multichap longfic
Word count: 150k+
Rating: T
Warnings: Mention of eventual major character death, brief mention of eventual Yuugi/Atem/fem OC in final chapter
Status: Complete
Times read: Probably 3ish
Standout characters/aspects: Feriha (fem OC) has a very small part, but she is integrated in a well-thought-out manner & quite likable.
Notes: This fic takes a lot of normal aspects of ygo like “cursed object” and “troubled king” and gives them a new spin! Bonus points for writing an OC villain who works as well as Hazim does.
Egyptology Exercises / All This We Do in the Name of Ma’at by Nedjemet
Original synopsis: “My attempt at redoing Yu-Gi-Oh with a focus on character development, magic, and historical accuracy instead of card games. While this is technically a series, "All This We Do in the Name of Ma'at" functions as a standalone story. All of the other stories are just in-universe follow ups to show what the characters got up to after the story was over. These shorts largely function as stand alones, too, since Ma'at follows cannon very closely in the important ways. All of the stories are ordered loosely in terms of when they occured. You can read them in any order.
All of the Egyptology is heavily researched and I did my best to get it right. If something is off and you have a source, please send it my way!
All of the stuff in modern Japan has minimal research done and is more for flavor than anything else. I'm going for anime-level accuracy with that, not realism.”
Type: Multichap longfic + a couple of shorter multichap fics + bonus work diving into the Egyptology research used in the fics
Word count: 200k+ altogether
Rating: T/M/E
Warnings: None
Status: Complete
Times read: Twice for All This We Do in the Name of Ma’at, probably 5-6 times for the two sequel fics
Standout characters/aspects: Nedjemet’s research on the Egyptology aspects is very impressive
Notes: Really good! The main fic is quite plot & research heavy tho, so I find myself revisiting the two shorter follow-up fics more often. More fluff than substance for me.
The Last Puzzle by Tenderwulf
Original synopsis: “11 years after the Ceremonial Duel, Atem and Bakura inexplicably find themselves back in Domino. When they meet their previous hosts, they realize how much things have changed: Yuugi, the now world-renowned King of Games, is going through a marriage crisis, Ryou is struggling to balance studies, work, and his brittle mental health, and Malik... well, Malik is living his best life—and his own yami is nowhere to be seen.
They soon realize they all have to work together in order to solve the mystery of the yamis’ return: some to make sure that they stay, and some to make sure that they don't.”
Type: Multichap longfic
Word count: 300k+
Rating: T
Warnings: Graphic depictions of violence
Status: Ongoing
Other ships: Tendershipping [Bakura Ryou/Yami Bakura], past Peachshipping [Mazaki Anzu/Mutou Yuugi]
Times read: 1
Standout characters/aspects: Yami Bakura’s character development is stellar.
Notes: Very good, altho I confess that I’m slightly more interested in the puzzle storyline than the tender story (which happens to be the main plot lol). Very much worth reading.
Keep the Light Shining by Clydeside
Original synopsis: “Yugi's new job as a lighthouse keeper sounds simple enough... until he realizes he's not entirely alone on the remote island: a dark spirit haunts Crawford Sound.
It lingers like a shadow in the night.
It watches, and it waits.
The past keepers warned of an inescapable terror, but as the days turn into weeks, Yugi begins to think it's not the ghost he ought to fear.”
Type: Multichap longfic
Word count: 50k+
Rating: M
Warnings: Major character death (Atem is already a ghost)
Status: Complete
Times read: 3
Standout characters/aspects: Worldbuilding!!!! This story is so gorgeously atmospheric
Notes: Please please please read Keep the Light Shining, it’s so good. The horror aspects combined with the romance and mystery aspects are so well-balanced.
Lineament by Zuzeca
Original synopsis: “Once seven, now three. A broken Pendant, a crumbling empire, and tugging at the seams of reality, hints of a sinister power returning. His faith in destiny strained past breaking, newly-crowned-and-deposed Pharaoh Set makes the questionable decision to try and solve the Millennium Puzzle with magic. As it goes with magic, his efforts are rewarded…but not quite in the way he expected.”
Type: Multichap longfic
Word count: 50k+
Rating: M
Warnings: Major character death (Ghost Atem again)
Status: Complete
Other ships: Logicshipping [Priestess Isis/Priest Seto]
Times read: 3
Standout characters/aspects: Set & Isis are very interesting & well-developed characters here.
Notes: Really interesting twist on the whole series. Somewhat of a time travel fic, but in a much more satisfying and less cheesy way than most.
Snake Charmer by InkFlavored
Original synopsis: “Prompts: ‘Wow, my pet snake looks so cute this morning and I’d be even happier if I actually had a pet snake.’ & ‘You curse under your breath in a foreign language and I know I shouldn’t be turned on but I totally am.’
Type: Oneshot
Word count: 20k+
Rating: T
Warnings: None
Status: Complete
Times read: 5
Standout characters/aspects: Osiris the snake is an icon
Notes: 100% fluff. Cute snake. Utterly delightful.
Cut Off / Whiskey, No Chaser by InkFlavored
Original synopsis: “Few people choose a day during the week to drink away their problems at a bar downtown. Most people wait until the weekend, content to simmer with their issues until Friday. Others do it at home with friends, and without worrying about how they're supposed to get home in time for work in the morning. All in all, it's rare that someone walks into a bar on a weeknight at ten-thirty to start drinking.
But that's exactly what happened to Atem.”
Type: Two multichap longfics
Word count: 100k+ combined
Rating: T
Warnings: None
Status: Complete
Other ships: Past rivalshipping [Mutou Yuugi/Kaiba Seto]
Times read: 2
Standout characters/aspects: Great way of showing how Atem becomes part of the friend group
Notes: It’s cute! Not InkFlavored’s best work, but all of their stuff is worth reading.
Macchiato Incommunicado by InkFlavored
Original synopsis: “Prompt: ‘my favorite coffee shop is closed for the day so i have to find somewhere else where i can get my overly-advanced pretentious order and i found the place where you work and now i never use the other place anymore because even though you always serve my drink with a “what the fuck has normal coffee ever done to you”-sigh you're really cute and i'd like to go out with you.’
Type: Oneshot
Word count: 15k+
Rating: T
Warnings: None
Status: Complete
Times read: 3
Standout characters/aspects: Points to everyone else in this fic for putting up with Yuugi & Atem’s stupid bullshit.
Notes: Pretty good interpretation of the dreaded miscommunication plot and the cliché coffee shop AU.
The First Leaves That Fall by Clydeside
Original synopsis: “When Yugi arrives in Yubari to settle the last of his grandfather’s affairs, he finds a mountain village in quiet decline. Most people have left for the city, buildings are crumbling, and nature grows dense and wild against its outskirts.
But among those who remain, superstition abounds, and they all offer the same advice:
Stay out of the forest.
Yugi, however, is intrigued. By the puzzle of its shifting paths. The riddle of a wind that speaks, if he listens.
And, perhaps most of all, by the stranger who always shows him the way out before dark.
Or: Yugi falls hard for the local cryptid. Not everyone is cool about it.”
Type: Multichapter longfic
Word count: 40k+
Rating: T
Warnings: None
Status: Ongoing
Times read: 1
Standout characters/aspects: Honda & Miho are really great friends, and bonus points for local Shinto priest Bakura, who is as ominous and strange as ever.
Notes: I love this fic!!!! Again, Clyde is the best at writing spooky & atmospheric stories. I can’t wait to see what really happened in Yubari to make the nature spirits (including Atem) so angry.
Chained to You by SajiSpellhart
Original synopsis: “Taking place after the events of Season Zero, all the shadow games happened but Yugi never found out he was possessed by the spirit of the puzzle. Now he's an adult, living on his own, and he starts to notice strange and spooky things happening around his apartment. When he sees his own shadow moving Yugi begins to suspect his new place is haunted. But is this shadow spirit malicious or... kinda sweet?
Yami does a bunch of stupidly sweet domestic shit for Yugi to help take care of him. Expect romance, fluff, self-care, and Puzzleshipping shenanigans.”
Type: Multichapter longfic
Word count: 100k+
Rating: T
Warnings: None
Status: Ongoing
Times read: 1
Standout characters/aspects: Yami is incredibly cute in this fic.
Notes: Really interesting AU where Yuugi never finds out about Atem as a high schooler, and so Season 0-esque shenanigans continue into adulthood.
He Has a Heartbeat by Kaibbage
Original synopsis: “Atem is back, and this time he's living and tangible. As such, Yugi cannot stop touching him - and vice versa.”
Type: Oneshot
Word count: 3k
Rating: E
Warnings: None
Status: Complete
Times read: 10 at least
Standout characters/aspects:
Notes: So cute!!! One of the best Atem Comes Back oneshots out there. Very sweet short little PWP.
Superimposed / Bird Rock Lambchop (Bird Bigger Bird) by Toffeecape
Original synopsis: “Yugi wants his other self to have nice things.”
Type: Series of oneshots + short multichaptered fics
Word count: 70k+ combined
Rating: E/M
Warnings: Some installments mention major character death (but with the caveat that the characters cross over to the Egyptian afterlife), most have no warnings
Status: Complete
Times read: Superimposed probably like 5 times, whole series twice
Standout characters/aspects: Love Yuugi’s urge to provide for Atem, very sweet. I also love the chapter of Like a Stone into a Pond that focuses on Yuugi’s mom’s relationship with Atem.
Notes: This series is sort of YMMV for me. To be entirely honest, the smut gets a little too weird for me in a lot of installments, so I don’t revisit it too often, but the first installment is definitely my favorite, and I love seeing the intimacy between Yuugi & Atem grow while they’re still sharing a body. The 4th installment is my other favorite, as it focuses less on smut and more on character interactions.
Phantom Limb by Killdoll
Original synopsis: “In the hospital after the fire where Yuugi reassembled the Millennium Puzzle, Yuugi and his Other Self have a heart-to-heart.
(Puzzleshipping, set during anime canon, attempted ghost cuddling.)”
Type: Oneshot
Word count: 3k
Rating: T
Warnings: None
Status: Complete
Times read: 5+
Standout characters/aspects: Really great characterization
Notes: Very sweet examination of the aftermath of (the anime version of) the fire.
Pieces of Puzzleshipping by Phoebeus
Original synopsis: “Originally this was where all of my tumblr prompts and random ficlets would come to live, but it's quickly become home to all of my random puzzleshipping fluff, instead. We shall acknowledge it as such until at least one other ship invades!”
Type: Oneshot collection
Word count: 17k+ combined
Rating: E
Warnings: Author Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings (I don’t remember anything too triggering in these oneshots besides a safeword use that is immediately respected in chapter 10)
Status: Complete
Times read: 2-3
Standout characters/aspects: To be honest, I don’t remember these individual oneshots all that well, but I love all of Phoebeus’ work.
Notes: Bite-sized and enjoyable fluff!
Getting Rivalzoned (and Learning to Live with It) by Oogenesis
Original synopsis: “Finding out that your best and closest and most infuriatingly attractive rival has come back to life is one thing.
Finding out that he and his former vessel have eyes only for each other - well, that's quite a different matter.”
Type: Short multichapter
Word count: 8k
Rating: T
Warnings: None
Status: Unfinished (seems to be abandoned, but I recall the last chapter working fairly well as an ending, so it’s not too infuriating)
Other Ships: onesided Prideshipping [Atem/Kaiba Seto]
Times read: 3ish
Standout characters/aspects: Just so incredibly funny.
Notes: This is my ideal prideship scenario. Sorry, Kaiba.
Visiting Hours by Oogenesis
Original synopsis: “Kaiba, at Atem's insistence, finally brings Yugi along on one of his visits to the afterlife, and promptly regrets it.”
Type: Oneshot
Word count: 1.5k
Rating: T
Warnings: None (possible major character death as Atem has already crossed over to the afterlife)
Status: Complete
Other Ships: One-sided prideshipping [Atem/Kaiba Seto]
Times read: 5ish at least
Standout characters/aspects: Same as the previous fic, just so funny to see Kaiba so deeply jealous while being completely ignored.
Notes: Love how excited to see each other Yuugi & Atem are.
Ours, Not Mine by MagiMevi
Original synopsis: “The spirit found such ease and amusement in simply perusing Yugi's daily memories, and Yugi no longer wanted to just share them with him. He wanted to make them with him – he wanted the spirit to create new memories – he didn't want to just amuse the spirit with the passing fibres of his life – he just – he wanted -
Don't worry about it, partner.”
Type: Oneshot
Word count: 5k
Rating: T
Warnings: None
Status: Complete
Times read: 2-3
Standout characters/aspects: Great exploration of Yuugi’s character
Notes: Yuugi scheming like hell to try to get Atem to live & enjoy himself while in the puzzle is one of my favorite tropes, 10/10.
Take Him (Cut Him Out in Little Stars) by InkFlavored
Original synopsis: “Most people think of light and silence as comforting things. To Yugi, they're anything but. Atem's mind is tearing itself to pieces and no one understands.
PuzzleJune 2019 (Week 3: Light)”
Type: Oneshot
Word count: 5k
Rating: G
Warnings: Creator Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings (Major character death canon to the end of the manga)
Status: Complete
Times read: 5+
Standout characters/aspects: I love Atem’s talk with Akhenamkhanen.
Notes: Definitely one of the most influential Atem comes back fics to my own work! It’s fabulous, 10/10.
The Seldom Seen by Clydeside
Original synopsis: “Yugi’s soul has gone missing after reassembling the Millennium Puzzle in the fire, leaving the Other Yugi to fill his place.
As he tries to hide the truth from Yugi’s friends and family, he searches for his partner and the scattered pieces of his soul. But without Yugi at his side, he is losing control of the Puzzle’s power over the shadow realm… and the creature it contains.”
Type: Mid-length multichapter
Word count: 45k
Rating: T
Warnings: Major character death (albeit tagged as “only sort of permanent”)
Status: Complete
Times read: 3
Standout characters/aspects: Angst!
Notes: I love any fic that examines Atem’s relationships (or lack thereof) with Yuugi’s friends and family.
Jolly Sailor Bold / Shellfish Tendencies by Kudalyn
Original synopsis: “‘The seas sing for those who are lost, and for those who find as well.’
Atem is a siren/merman and Yugi is a ghost haunting a sunken ship Atem comes across. Atem is intrigued by the ghost, hangs around enough that they start to get to know each other, getting attached, and falling for each other over time. But Yugi’s memories start to fade, as ghosts don’t get to stay forever on the living plane, and Atem has to deal with this loss.
My entry for the YGO Big Bang 2018!
Content Warning of character death and mourning, with reward at the end if you stick through it ;)”
Type: Series of two oneshots
Word count: 15k+ combined
Rating: M
Warnings: Major character death (sort of temporary? It’s complicated lol)
Status: Complete
Times read: 3ish
Standout characters/aspects: Honestly really interesting implications about the origins of mermaids……….
Notes: Super fun twist on a mermaid AU.
Untitled Puzzleshipping Doujinshi by Kaluda
Original synopsis: “This is a doujin I made in 2019 that I decided to post here as well. Inspired by the end of the Dark Side of Dimensions film.”
Type: Short comic
Word count: N/A?
Rating: Unrated (I would say G)
Warnings: None (Major character death canon to manga/anime)
Status: Complete
Times read: 3ish
Standout characters/aspects: Such cute art!!!!!!
Notes: Rare comic example, but it’s posted on ao3, so I’m counting it as a fic. It’s really very sweet & short, go check it out!
Angle of Approach by InkFlavored
Original synopsis: “Definition: (in golf) the angle at which the club head strikes the ball. This affects the trajectory the ball will travel and spin.
The only thing Atem hates more than his family’s annual summer vacation is the “family” part. A whole three months away from home, away from friends, and away from freedom. This year, he’s nearly resigned himself to the worst trip he’s ever been on, surrounded by people he couldn’t care less about.
Then he meets Yugi, and decides to make his own fun.”
Type: Multichap longfic
Word count: 130k+
Rating: E
Warnings: No archive warnings apply, general warning for emotional and slight physical abuse by parents, and definitely warning for workplace sexual harassment
Status: Ongoing (Unfinished? Abandoned??? I sure hope not)
Times read: 2
Standout characters/aspects: Yugi is phenomenal in this AU. I’m obsessed with him.
Notes: I love this fic!!!! I usually don’t like fics where Atem is an asshole, but apparently it’s fine if he’s a bottom lmao. Anyway I love seeing Atem very very slowly become a better person against his will, and I’m really hoping Ink_Flavored is still working on this fic. It’s one of my favorite ongoing works.
Dress Up Game by InkFlavored
Original synopsis: “The Mutou family, including the newly resurrected Atem, get invited to a wedding. Neither Yugi nor Atem have anything to wear to the event, but it’s not a big deal. All they have to do is go shopping to pick something out. How bad could it possibly be?”
Type: Two chapter fic
Word count: 25k+
Rating: T
Warnings: None
Status: Complete
Times read: 3
Standout characters/aspects: Really great attention to detail about Japanese culture. Taught me a lot about traditional Japanese weddings!
Notes: This fic is so cute! Really nice fic that focuses on Atem living life after coming back from the dead.
Await Red to Become Anthracite by Zigur_zig_ah
Original synopsis: “Yuugi, security guard un-extraordinaire, leads a particularly mundane life. He sits in front of a monitor for eight hours a cycle, pretends to concern himself with the safety of five-hundred and thirty-nine Roman coins of no value whatsoever, and occasionally, when work is especially slow, occupies the unenviable position of Duel Monsters champion of the known universe.
But something stalks the perpetual darkness of Proxima-b. A horror from beyond the grave, loosed in a moment of carelessness, has set its hollow, empty sights on Yuugi - and Yuugi, try as he might, can't seem to stay away from it.”
Type: Medium length multichapter fic
Word count: 30k
Rating: M
Warnings: Creator Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings
Status: Complete
Times read: 1
Standout characters/aspects: Really fun combination of futuristic sci-fi, horror, canon, and ancient Egypt?
Notes: A bit less romance-y than plot-centered, but the way the story unfolds is really fascinating.
Hindsight by Cloudsmachinations
Original synopsis: “Yugi needs to wear glasses. Atem needs to calm the hell down.”
Type: Oneshot
Word count: 2.5k
Rating: T
Warnings: None
Status: Complete
Times read: 3ish
Standout characters/aspects: I love an Atem that is down bad
Notes: So cute tbh

I read those replies about risks of HRT, and it's interesting how one of those studies says "we actually need to study this more", but that person drew a conclusion that "HRT is definitely causing this".
It is annoying. Cofounding factors are a real tricky bit in regards to studies and that person just... Imagine they can know more of them than researchers.
It's in the notes of this post:
Even I kinda go rough when I say "yeah T raises risk for CVD" considering that, as the study says, trans men are smoking more, exercising less, having more anxiety etc than the general population. And despite the rising risks for CVD, mortality stays the same.
I agree there is still a lot we don't know about HRT, I agree we should research it more. Better yet, design specific meds for us to have that are perfectly attuned to our needs. For example, now I'm at almost a full vial of T every four weeks, (0.9ml out of 1ml, it decreased with my weight), so I don't throw away that much. But at one point I was at 0.5ml every two weeks, meaning I was throwing away half a vial every two weeks, aka a complete vial every month. It was crushing me because there are shortage of those meds and I hate throwing away stuff. Had there been a specific med tailored to specific trans needs, that wouldn't have happened.
But to claim that, because the specific med wasn't approved for, specifically, trans people it means it's dangerous and that we shouldn't use it.... Is just false. We have no evidence of that, we have even less evidence that it would outweigh the benefits. That person is just taking a stance that every med used off label should just have a 30 years cohort of test to decide whether it should be used, independently of whether the people who use it really need it or not. Which, even if it were to happen, would probably not even let pharmaceutical companies take the steps to actually make a med for us because we don't bring them enough money for it.
Doctors are also not usually just morons playing with molecules, they engage their responsibility using those meds and therefore make sure it's used well, they are experts in those domains. In my country at least, if you're not an endocrinologist, a gynecologist or a few other specific specialties dealing with hormones, you can't prescribe HRT. It does mean that yes, blood tests every 6 months are important, but like, if something really bad was happening to my body, we'd know. That's also how we realized that I had a fatty liver, which led me to eat better, which led me to have healthier habits in regards to food. So like... I guess T saved my liver in my case, as it has absolutely 0 symptoms before it's too late (the liver is a stealth bastard).
And again, I could go on and on about antidepressants and antipsychotics. I wouldn't advise anyone to stop them or anything, I think sometimes they outweigh the risks, but I personally had disastrous side effects from antipsychotics (taken to treat depression and anxiety, which is not even for that normally so yeah talk about off label I think that's a bigger issue, but i was at a mental hospital and pressured to take them and all) which led to hypothyroidism and prolactin level issues for me. Those side effects are studied and known to belong to antipsychotics, and little do you know when I stopped (after suffering from massive insomnias and bad feelings, it was a real shit med for me) it vanished.
I don't understand why HRT is the main issue when it's about such a tiny number of people, hasn't shown any bad metabolic side effects (except maybe like raising bad cholesterol but it doesn't mean much, it can still very much be in normal range, i still have normal range for ex), and hasn't had any evidence of shortening lives so far. If it ever changes, then I'll change my opinion, but I really don't think we'll find in ten years that T caused people to die, every expert on the issue argues that it's probably safe.
I think it's saner to argue that, even if you have no issue whatsoever, it's important to exercise, eat well, socialize, and avoid drinking and smoking. That advice is for every single person and it will save lives, way more than stopping T will ever do.

Thank you @whatagreatproblemtohave for tagging me 🤗
Tagging @spookside @feeisamarshmallow @sonofaraven @goodlwife @cloudslou if you feel like it 💕
1. Are you named after anyone? Nope, my parents just liked that name. It’s a pretty uncommon one for people of my generation, but ever since I moved back to Canada I’ve met/heard of a lot of older men wearing it and I’m like???
2. When was the last time you cried? I think a few weeks ago while watching a stream, I won’t go into more details 😬
3. Do you have kids? Nah
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? I don’t think so, unless I’m with someone I’m really close to, which unfortunately doesn’t happen that often. And maybe sometimes on here, but tbh I’m not really sure what counts as sarcasm lol
5. What's the first thing you notice about people? Probably their general demeanour and how they interact with the world and other people. Like whether they’re confident or a little awkward, and how they express themselves
6. What's your eye color? Light brown
7. Scary movies or happy endings? Neither (sad/open endings)
8. Any special talents? Finding something new to obsess over every 6 months to 3 years, and making it my entire personality
9. Where were you born? Does it need to be said... France
10. What are your hobbies? Walking, writing thinking about writing, reading, watching people play video games, listening to music, baking (occasionally), doing jigsaw puzzles, hanging out on Tumblr, in public libraries and in coffee shops
11. Do you have any pets? Sadly no, but my main goal in life is to be financially stable enough to be able to have a dog
12. What sports do you play/ have you played? I did the ballet for ten years growing up, but I haven’t done anything else since I quit. My only form of exercise these days is to walk as much as I can
13. How tall are you? Not tall
14. Favorite subject at school? English (as in the language, not literature). I studied linguistics at uni and ended up specializing in language variation and change, which I guess was my favourite subject, although I also enjoyed phonology
15. Dream Job: The more time I spend there, the more I think I’d actually love to work at a public library. As a kid I used to dream of being a writer, but now I’m really content to just have it as a hobby

How do I lose 70 lbs in 30 days?
1. Exercise regularly
This may seem obvious, but exercise is a good way to burn calories and reduce body fat. If you want to get rid of those extra pounds, then make sure to find something you enjoy doing - whether that's jogging or playing basketball. In addition to burning calories, exercise stimulates endorphins, the brain chemicals that give us feelings of happiness and well-being. Studies show that people who exercise regularly have lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, improved sleep patterns, greater self-esteem, increased confidence and an improved sense of well being.
2. Eat right and drink enough water
The best advice we can give anyone wanting to lose weight is to eat cleanly and drink plenty of water. Avoid processed foods, sugary drinks and fatty meats to start losing weight faster. By eating healthier and drinking more water, you'll feel fuller longer, which helps you eat less. Also keep a food journal to track what you're eating. This will help you identify problem areas and improve your diet.
3. Lose weight gradually
If you only go on a crash diet and restrict yourself from food for weeks at a time, you risk putting on unhealthy amounts of weight. Instead, lose 10 percent of your total weight slowly over a period of two months. If you want to drop down to a size 4 from a size 14, aim for 1-2 pounds per week until you reach your goal weight. Don't worry about counting calories or weighing yourself, just focus on keeping active and monitoring how much you're eating
4. Focus on your mental state
A positive attitude goes a long way towards reaching your weight loss goals. If you let negative thoughts take hold of you (e.g., thinking "I'm not gonna be able to stick to my diet"), they will manifest themselves physically. When you think positively instead (e.g., "I've got everything under control,") you set yourself up to succeed. Be mindful throughout the day. Pay attention to what thoughts are running around in your head and try to replace them with others that inspire you.
Do You Want Weight Loss Fast : Secret
5. Talk about your struggles
When was the last time you discussed your weight loss journey with someone? Share your struggles with friends, family members or even a counselor. Talking about these challenges helps you to stay motivated and keeps you accountable. You might decide to join a support group where members share their experiences and support one another.
6. Find the right diet plan for you
Before beginning any weight loss program, talk with your doctor first to ensure it's safe for you. There are many diets out there, each with its own pros and cons. Before making any changes to your current lifestyle, figure out which diet works best for you. Do some research on popular diets and pick one that fits your lifestyle and preferences.
7. Have realistic expectations
Losing weight isn't always as simple as cutting back on unhealthy foods and exercising more often; after all, you probably gained weight due to lifestyle adjustments and stressors. Expecting to shed pounds without changing anything about your daily routine is unrealistic. Take things slow and don't beat yourself up if you slip up. Remember, everyone starts anew and it takes time to make lasting changes to habits.

WHAT STOPS YOU FROM LOSING WEIGHT? | WAYS TO BREAK WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAU
An increase in weight is one of the reasons why people opt for weight loss diets. Well, weight loss is challenging with a lot of ups and downs. Some look for quick fixes on how to lose weight fast while some focus on slow but sustainable weight loss. Several people will tell you, “It’s calories in versus calories out that matters” – as if the body is a simple math equation. If it was that simple, everyone would have aced it. But, no matter what one does, weight loss is a gradual process and certain obstacles may stop you from losing weight.
Yes, you heard it right. Now let’s understand what can stop you from losing weight.
Plateau -Weight loss plateau is when after losing a few kilos on the weighing scale, the weight plateaus on the scale…wherein the weight just stops dropping down no matter what you do. It is a part and parcel of the weight loss journey. These plateaus can last from a few weeks to a couple of months. But, each problem has a solution, there are various ways to break the weight loss plateau. A few of them are increasing the intensity of workouts, reducing the carbohydrates in the diet, managing stress and getting adequate sleep.
Lack of Sleep It is essential to get enough sleep for your physical and mental health, as well as your weight management. Studies have shown that losing sleep could affect the metabolism by making one feel hungry even when they are not. Sleep deprivation may affect the secretion of cortisol, one of the hormones that regulate appetite. Lack of sleep leads to slow or less movement throughout the day, which means fewer calories burned. On the other hand, this stress hormone instructs the body to preserve energy to power the waking hours. Sleeping does not necessarily help lose weight, but sleep deprivation interferes with metabolism, which results in weight gain.
Eating Insufficiently If you have been eating a few calories, you probably initially shed weight, but it is not a sustainable result. To fuel your metabolism, you need to eat sufficiently. Extreme calorie restriction tells the body to store energy rather than use it. The body does this as a defence mechanism since it does not realize that you are dieting. It simply believes you have run out of food and are uncertain about your next mealtime. Avoid this by losing weight gradually rather than through crash diets.
Medical Condition Some medical conditions such as thyroid can lead to a gain in weight over some time or slow down the metabolism causing slow or no weight loss. Timely intervention for these medical conditions is required to help with weight loss.
Weekend Indulgence If you are taking care of what you do throughout the week but over the weekend let go of yourself and indulge, then you are not doing justice to your weight loss diet. The weight you lose over the week comes back to you with your ignorance of what you eat over the weekend and the vicious cycle of losing weight over the week and gaining it back on weekends begins.
Stress The stress of reaching a weight-loss plateau may skyrocket cortisol levels. High levels of stress can slow or stop your weight loss journey. Here is why. When you are hungry, your body releases cortisol to signal that you need to eat. Prolonged stress raises cortisol levels and increases body fat storage. There are two ways to reduce stress. Ideally, you want to control the source of your stress, or you can control your stress response. Sleep, lift weights, go for walks, talk with friends, journal, listen to music, and talk to your friends…and wait patiently for the weight to come off.
Here are a few tips on how to lose weight gradually –
Exercise for 1 hour at least 5-6 days a week
Eat balanced meals
Make sure you rest yourself enough by getting a minimum of 7 hours of sound sleep
Keep the weekend indulgence limited to not more than a meal instead of 2 consecutive days
Consult a physician in case of a medical condition
Avoid undereating and ensure you are eating a well-balanced diet
Meditate for at least for a few minutes to manage stress
Losing weight can be a challenging journey for many individuals, and various factors can contribute to the difficulty in achieving one’s weight loss goals but, don’t get demotivated if you are not losing weight. Oura ring review
I bought Oura v3 the day it came out, after a couple years of wearing v2.
So why do I have such mixed reviews about my Oura ring?
I didn't know I was getting a Fitbit, and I don't like the step tracker.
You could argue that this is on me, and I'd agree, but I don't like having a step counter. Am I marginally more active? Probably. Am I convinced it's really that important that I get up every hour like the activity score says it is? No. Do I regain focus when I get up every hour because of the ring? No.
I generally just find it a little stressful to have my steps counted. Maybe activity getting gamified is good for some people, for me I think it's a net negative. And unfortunately on a human level I continue to be unable to simply ignore the activity score.
2. I don't trust the scores
As I suggested above, I am not confident that the 3 scores (sleep, readiness, and activity) are particularly well thought through, even after they've had years to tweak them.
If you are going to gamify me, I want my scores to actually reflect progress and health.
Activity. Your score is determined by how many minutes you've been inactive, how many days you made your daily goal, whether Oura thinks you've both rested and exercised enough.
There's more problems here than I can mention in a post, but let's do three basic ones.
First, whether you make your daily goal is binary. If your goal is 500 active calories burned per day and you burn 499, then you get a 0 for that day for your score and that 0 will linger in your activity score for a week. wut. Second, I frequently get in situations where Oura is dinging me points both for not exercising enough and not resting enough. You can't have it both ways, Oura. Third, you can pick your daily activity goal. If you raise it, then you get no credit for activity, but you will constantly find yourself in the situation of #2 where you are getting dinged.
Sleep. Your score is determned by how long you sleep, you often you wake up, how much REM sleep, how much deep sleep, how long it takes for you to fall asleep, and when you sleep.
Oura is extremely judgmental of night owls like me. It will never give me a good score, no matter how much I sleep because I generally go to bed late. In my opinion, they should have some rock solid evidence if they're going to be so absurdly judgmental, and let's examine those studies for multicollinearity.
As for REM/deep sleep, Oura seems pretty good. But of course it doesn't have the accuracy of a medical device, and there's likely people for whom it is more inaccurate than others.
Readiness. Your score is determined by your lowest heart rate while you sleep, HRV balance, temperature, how long it takes for your heart rate to stabilize, how much you sleep, and how active you are (though it seems these last 2 measure are overly dependent on your activity and sleep scores, which are overly biased and judgmental).
These actually seem like the most accurate and useful metrics to me. If your heart rate is up, you probably need to do something about it like stop eating earlier or not watching something scary or reduce your stress, etc. If your temperature is up, you are getting sick and need to make sure to sleep longer tonight. This is hardly my area of expertice, but my understanding is HRV is known for being an important metric for athletic performance.
There are stories of people identifying serious issues early solely because these heart rate started going up, and I totally believe it.
3. I lost v3 after 6 months and never replaced it.
The oxygenation rate seemed like the big feature, but it was always the same. If I recall correctly, it wasn't even supported in the software when I first got v3.
I have heard that v3 is now actually signifcantly better, particularly in sleep accuracy, but it did not seem better during the roughly 6 months that I had it.
I understand hardware is hard. It is! But isn't that even all the more reason why the software shouldn't have lagged so much behind the hardware?
4. Oura ruined my sleep...for awhile
When I first got my ring, I'd wake up early and be excited to see my sleep score, then be annoyed when it was bad and be unable to go back to sleep.
Anything observed...changes.
This might not be true for you, but it was very true for me, and quite negative. I imagine this is not the normal effect, but worse sleep lasted awhile for me.
5. I'm annoyed at how it thinks that in my early 40s I can't go for a run after a day where I went for a long, slow walk.
Yes, this type of thing really happens. Maybe it's true? I don't know. Seems like it's not, but when it does say things like this through the activity/readiness score, I think it needs to prove it to me.
What do you like about the Oura ring, Evan?
There must be some things, because I still wear it!
I realized I needed to prioritize sleep more. I've taken some steps to sleep better and to get more types of certain sleep. I realized that the cold is better for sleep, when that's not intuitive to me.
It's given me a much more intuitive sense of how many calories you actually burn through exercise. I now understand why all health gurus say "diet > exercise," since you can walk for an hour and burn less calories than eating a chocolate chip cookie.
That all made it worth the $299 to me.
The data is directionally correct. It's probably not yet to the level of accurately where it's worth obsessing over any of it, but as I said above, it can be an early warning sign of serious health issues. It can point stuff out you can improve on. It can get you to be more active, and also tell you the days you shouldn't be active.
All of those things only get more important as I get older.
----
As a final note, Oura has a bunch of your health data sitting in a centralized server somewhere. That means it is a honeypot for hackers, governments, etc. Oura is based in Finland, which is probably the only reason I don't naturally assume that it's intrinsically spyware (though it does have a San Francisco office). I certainly worry about any centralized data depots over the long-run of any startup. The incentive to sell your data or metadata or whatever is strong.
This is why we decentralize.

Jogging vs running: Which is better for weight loss?
Weight loss is not exactly a cakewalk – it takes a lot of effort and hard work to shed the extra kilos! But the biggest dilemma you might face on your weight loss journey is choosing the right exercise, especially if hitting the gym is not your cup of tea. If you are one of those who despise the gym, there are plenty of other exercises that can help. Case in point: running and jogging. So, they are amazing exercises but which one is better for you to lose weight – running or jogging? Health Shots reached out to Fitness expert and founder of DtF, Sonia Bakshi to know if running is better for weight loss or jogging!
Running vs Jogging
What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about the differences between running and jogging? You would probably think of jogging as a slow run – which, to a certain extent, is true. Also Read: If you love running, get your form on track with these 5 tricksBakshi says that the main difference between running and jogging is intensity. Running is faster and demands more effort from the heart, lungs, and muscles. It also requires a higher level of overall fitness. Jogging, on the other hand, does not require you to put too much pressure on the body as it takes a much slower and steady pace. As a result, it can be done for longer periods of time. It is also suitable for people of all fitness levels, adds the expert.
Know how to lose weight with running and jogging. Image courtesy: Adobe StockPeople are at a higher risk of getting injured during running. Studies have found that overdoing it or running without a technique can lead to Achilles tendinitis, plantar fascitis, shin splints, stress fractures, and more such injuries. Jogging, on the other hand, doesn’t lead to serious injuries.
Running vs jogging: For weight loss
While the main difference between running and jogging is intensity, the expert says both are an apt choice for someone trying to lose weight. A study published in the Metabolic Syndrome and Related Disorders found that aerobic exercises like running can help reduce belly fat. Jogging, similar to running, is an aerobic exercise that contributes to weight loss. Studies have found that it is an effective way to burn calories and contribute to a calorie deficit. One hour of jogging can help burn approximately 300-500 calories. “Choosing to run or jog will not really affect how much weight you lose because your duration of jogging will be more than the duration of your running,” adds the fitness expert
Things to keep in mind if you are trying to lose weight
As per Bakshi, you should keep a few things in mind whether you start running or jogging to lose weight:1. Start at a slow pace, then progress to jogging, and you can switch to running in a few months.. 2. Don’t overdo it. Have rest days every week to allow your body to heal, especially if you have pain. 3. Choose a softer surface whether you want to run or jog, and avoid running on the road. 4. Do not tilt your head down or slump your shoulders while you run or jog. 5. Maintain a good posture and engage your core while jogging or running. Broaden your chest, and keep it lifted as you draw your shoulder down and back. 6. Keep your hands loose, and use a relaxed arm swing. 7. Avoid hitting the ground with your heel as it may cause your leg to slow down your stride and stress your knees. 8. Do some warm-up exercises and stretches before you start jogging or running. 9. Drink plenty of fluids and take a water bottle with you on your body. You should drink some water before, after, and during the activity. 10. Check with your doctor if engaging in jogging or running is a good idea for you, especially if you are overweight, have injuries, or are above 40 years. Other factors also play a role in weight loss
If you think weight loss is only possible by working out for an hour and eating junk, you’re wrong! Not only is it vital to eat a balanced diet, but you also need to add different forms of workout like strength training, Pilates, or swimming to lose weight and tone up faster, avers Bakshi. So, try to incorporate different exercises in your workout and eat healthy to achieve your weight loss goals. Also, do not forget to consult a professional fitness trainer and a doctor to know what will suit you the best! Read the full article

1. START WITH MINI HABITS FOR MAXI SUCCESS
Have you ever made it your goal to get up at 5 or 6 a.m. every day to wok on your heart project or to do sports? During my studies, I failed so many times in this project that at some point I stopped counting. It wasn't until I slowly felt my way into my desired habit - and got up first at 7:50, then at 7:40, at 7:00 and so on - that I finally hopped out at 6:00 a.m. for seven months without the bed. It wasn't until years later that I understood that I was unconsciously practising the concept of "mini-habits" at the time Webmindhub.com || Hanuman Jayanti 2023 || Best शुभ मुहूर्त
2. LINK YOUR HABIT TO TIME AND PLACE
Have you ever tried to pull yourself together with motivational videos or lectures? Motivational psychologist Peter Gollowitzer found that neither videos nor lectures about the benefits of your intentions have a measurable effect on turning words into actions. At the same time, however, he was able to show that by writing down a so-called "implementation plan" you can increase this probability from an average of 35% to an amazing 91%. [4] The Effects of Implementation Plans Gollwitzer, P. M. (1999). Implementation intentions: Strong effects of simple plans. American Psychologist, 54, 493-503 This plan is nothing more than a simple sentence that links your habit to a place and time. A few examples:

Find Me In Class or... Running Off to Vienna
Hey přátelé,
It officially doesn't feel like I'm on vacation anymore. Classes started last Tuesday, and my schedule means I have 9 am ones every day. I'm not exactly a morning person, but since my schedule last semester at Michigan was essentially the same, I'm keeping up... at least for now haha. We have 3.5 hour classes with a 30 minute break built in, and sitting in class for that long is definitely something I'm having to get used to. Fortunately, most of my classes have been pretty engaging. I'm taking 5 classes in total: Introduction to AI, Database Management Systems, Communication for the Tech Sector, Tech Ethics and Public Policy, and Augmented Reality: Leadership Development for the Tech Sector.
The view from our school building -- makes up for the 20 minute daily walk from our apartment
Unlike my EECS classes at Michigan, each one of these classes is interactive and more discussion based. It was a nice change to be able to form connections with professors easily. All of mine have such interesting backgrounds with many coming from working in the industry. Some highlights of class include playing Kahoot to review Python knowledge in AI and completing a lifeline exercise in Leadership Development to learn more about the other students on my program!
Played a pretty competitive game of Kahoot and learned a bit about the statistics of the tech industry
I'm a big fan of studying in the Law Library on campus, so I wanted to find somewhere similar here in Prague. Enter the Academy of Sciences Library! Our director for the program recommended we register at this library, so I headed over one day after class and the process is surprisingly easy. You do have to pay a small fee, which I didn't expect as most American libraries are free to enter, but it was only about $10 for 6 months. Just look at the architecture and vibes... definitely puts me in more of a studying mood than my apartment.
Beyond all the academic responsibilities that started, my roommates and some other friends on our program decided to travel to Vienna for the weekend. This was probably one of the first places on my travel bucket list, because, like Prague, I had only ever heard good things about the city. It's also only 4 hours from Prague, a straight train or bus ride (we actually took both, one there and one back).
Took a bus Friday afternoon and saw the sun set over a lake
Our Czech teacher had mentioned that Vienna is similar to Prague but a little cleaner and more modern, and I definitely got that feeling when visiting. I'd have to say my favorite parts were definitely the teal and marble buildings and the delicious breakfasts we had. I would be very content if you just left me to marvel at all the pretty places around the city ngl. I'm a big planner and decided to create the route we walked on Saturday which ended up being around 30,000 steps. I don't know what my friends thought, but I'd say I'm now pretty qualified to be a tour guide haha [to my friends-- sorry for killing your feet but thanks for coming along :)]
Blue skies for our first full day (we got rained on on Sunday </3)
I almost didn't want to come back to Prague. Thankfully, more adventures to come!
Na shledanou,

Think about how mad Bakugo is at Deku for his recklessness right now and then be reminded that Bakugo doesn’t even know the half of it, he knows like a maybe 1/4 of it all
Things Bakugo Doesn’t Know
1. Just how insane Dekus training to get 14A was.
Deku was quirkless and deadlifting rusted out dryers with no protection or even consistent supervision, at any point one of the trash piles could have destabilized and fallen on him and cracked his skull open
Deku was at any given moment seconds away from being sliced open by dirty beach trash and dying a slow painful death from god only knows what diseases(tetanus, hiv, flesh eating bacteria, staphylococcus to name a few)
Deku over did said training to the point of collapse and was just lucky the 2 times it happened All Might was with him
Deku spent several months meeting up with a man HE DID NOT KNOW, AFTER DARK, ALONE, AND NOT EXPECT HOME FOR HOURS. All Might could have been a more villainous Twice and kidnapped him with the perfect alibi to have a head start fleeing the gd country, Deku could have been flown to Siberia before his absence was noticed!
2. How Deku shattered his limbs in the entrance exam to save Uraraka
Bakugo hadn’t heard about it before school started and Iida never finished explaining the rumor during their first class and then it was old news so 🤷🏻♀️
3. Literally anything about the Stain incident
Doesn’t know he was attacked on a train while interning and used it as an excuse to go do vigilante shit
Bakugo like everyone thinks that Deku, Iida, and Todo just happened to be working near each other, got attacked, and then saved by Endeavor
He hasn’t a single clue that a Nomu actually plucked Deku up and got airborne with him, and than he was saved by Stain
The government covered up their crime because they all had class privilege (Deku by proxy to AM) and it almost didn’t work because Todo said fuck 12, called the chief of police a slur, and then tried to fight him💀
4. The Fight Against Muscular
Deku just showed up looking like he’d been tap danced on by an 18 wheeler, no one was really aware that he was yet again fighting a serial hero killer
5. That Deku was dressed like even more of a douché bag when he rescued him from LOV
His life wasn’t in danger because of it, but the fact that Bakugo missed out on the goatee and sunglasses at night is a tragedy imo
6. Inko didn’t want him coming back to UA and All Might and Deku AGREED TO IT
Bruh DvK2 almost didn’t happen, like Bakugo was so close to coming back to school and moving into the dorms only to find out DEKU AND ALL MIGHT ARE OUT DOING HERO SCHOOL CAMPUS TOURS AND HAVE LEFT HIM BEHIND TO ROT IN AN OCEAN OF GUILT 💀💀💀
Deku could have gone to any other school he wanted, like other schools would be frothing at the mouth bending over backwards to get the kid with ALL MIGHTS PERSONAL RECOMMENDATION
Bakugo was gonna be left with no closure while his rival and idol have 5 start dinners and get schmoozed by deans all over the world, and he’d probably only find out about it from his mom like a month later after she chatted with Inko. I mean Aizawa isn’t gonna drop any details, it’d just be “they won’t be joining us in todays exercise, or any following days, anyway moving on”
7. Deku meeting toga during the licensing exam
Deku doesn’t know it either but he does know something was up with that girl, Kacchan knows that Sero found Deku hiding behind some rocks with a naked lady … it’s only life threatening if Kacchans jealousy circle back to this memory someday
8. Dekus work study with Sir Night details
Deku met a yakuza leader and almost brawled him in the streets, and no one knows it except for Mirio
Deku was interning under All Mights old sidekick and I don’t think Kacchan had the time to really process that
All Mights old sidekick didn’t like Deku, I think it’d be interesting to have seen Katsuki struggle with that. Because until recent chapters with Dekus return to UA there hasn’t been any scene where Katsuki bares witness to anyone other than him talk shit about Deku
Deku went head to head with a Frankenstein on super solder serum eugenics enthusiast yakuza leader solo and won
Deku went nuclear and destroyed his body countless times to keep up with being constantly rewound
Deku offered to give away 14A to Mirio
Deku stole his dead mentors poster
9. Deku beat up a YouTuber before 9am
Deku is unsupervised for 1 minute and hops on the trend of beating down on a tea loving bargain bin Stain, while breaking in a new support item he got 15 minutes prior
10. Aoyama is making moves and trying to shoot his shot
Bakugo was so preoccupied with his remedial class that someone else was able to take his vacant spot of lurking around after Deku
And they brought snacks arranged into love notes. Frankly the fact that Deku even remembered who Kacchan was after that display really proves how loyal he is, or Deku knows just how good a cook Bakugo is and is willing to play the long game
I’ll stop there cause Bakugo invites himself to the 14A meetings and starts training with Deku, and just glues himself to Deku in general so he doesn’t miss much else until the telenovela level drama at the hospital and everything after it till now
So ya Bakugo only vaguely knows about the reckless fights Deku has gotten into with permission, all the un-cosigned stuff? Completely in the dark.
Anything dangerous Deku’s done that didn’t break a law? Bakugo doesn’t even know that there’s anything to know, like the first time Deku got attacked by the sludge villain or how his bone shattering was purely just AM being a shit teacher with too much baggage to call his old mentor for help
At this point it’s probably best health wise that Bakugo never finds out about it all 😅
#bnha#boku no hero#my hero academia#mha#bnha bakugo katsuki#bakugou katsuki#kacchan#deku#izuku midoriya#all might#allmight#yagi toshinori#stain mha#mha chisaki#Eri#eri mha#You could fill a book with things Bakugo doesn’t know so Horikoshi did it several times over📚

Buds After the Frost
This was supposed to be a short warm-up writing exercise yesterday and then it got... longer. Enjoy!!
...
The doors opened for Maddie Fenton with a pneumatic hiss. Pressurized nitrogen released, splitting open the vacuum seal on the door as its twin halves slid apart, slotting into the wall-mounted sleeves. The nitrogen misted out, cold and dry, air currents catching in swirls around Maddie Fenton’s lab coat. Her feet thocked against hollow metal, amplified by the coldness and the vastness of the containment room beyond.
She paused short of the specimen’s cell, mindful attention drawn to the panel of controls nested rightmost against the wall. The monitor read out stats, tracked metrics of the specimen’s heartrate and blood oxygenation and blood pressure. Dials beneath the screens offered her means of interaction, manipulating the cage’s environment without needing to tamper with it by hand. She ignored these, as she had been ignoring them the entire time, and paid mind only to the single switch which would seal shut the doors behind her.
She pressed it. Another pneumatic hiss followed, locking out the world behind her. Her breath curled, cold. She and the specimen were alone.
“No coffee this morning?” he asked.
Maddie sat down at the control panel, elbow leaning against the dashboard for support. She turned to the cage. “No. One of the interns broke the pot last night. New one should be delivered today.”
Phantom let out a huff of air. “You mean in this whole gigantic mega-hyper-futuristic government lab, there’s nothing that can stand in as a coffee pot?”
“I wouldn’t stay employed long if I tried using equipment to brew coffee.”
“Use one of the big ectoplasm beakers. Ectoplasm washes out with soap and water. Just suds it up and throw it in the coffee maker. I’m an expert about these things.”
“It’s more about protocol.”
Phantom waved her off. “’Protocol.’ Bureaucracy is standing between you and a delicious cup of ectoplasmic coffee, Dr. Fenton.”
Maddie looked forward now, taking him in. He’d hovered to the front of the cell, translucent reinforced glass separating him from the rest of the lab. Green eyes shined above a cheeky smile, a dusting of loose white hairs falling over his eyes, the rest of his bangs swept slightly to the side. His tailed flickered, his aura pulsed, his vital readings blipped out steady, normal, healthy.
“Phantom?”
“Yeah?”
Maddie paused.
“Why are you still here?”
The ghost boy let out a small guffaw. He motioned his arms around him, hands waving. “I dunno. Maybe the big ghost-proof box I’m in has something to do with it?”
“The shield is down, Phantom,” Maddie answered quietly. She set her eyes to Phantom, investigating. “…I put it down last night. It’s down now. You knew this.”
Phantom took just a moment too long to react, eyebrows arching up. “Oh, huh! Nope I didn’t notice. I mean it’s not like I’m constantly throwing myself at the barrier to electrocute myself so no I just didn’t try getting past it last night so I didn’t notice.”
“Phantom,” Maddie said again, voice measured, words stern. “You saw me crank down the dial that controls the shield.”
“Well I don’t know what all those buttons and dials do.”
“Yes you do. You’ve been observing me since day 1. You knew.”
Phantom kicked back in the air, floating a fraction back and higher. “Well maybe I thought it was a trap, I dunno. Or maybe I just like to get in your head, you know? What unpredictable thing will Phantom do next! Gotta write another 200 equations about ghost theory to figure that one out, Dr. Fenton.”
“Phantom.”
“Yeah?”
“Do you not want to leave?”
“Oh I wanna leave.”
“Then why aren’t you?”
“We’re having a conversation. That’d be rude.”
“Will you leave as soon as I exit the room?”
“Who knows?”
“Phantom.”
“Yeah?”
Maddie stood. She left her chair and the control panel behind. She walked up to the specimen cage instead. It was cubic, a skeleton of metal bar ribbings with a metal mesh that plastered the glass sides like a membrane. The top anchored to the ceiling, the bottom—raised by about a foot—anchored to a pedestal on the floor. Maddie stared through the mesh into Phantom’s eyes.
“Is there anyone who realizes you’re missing?” she asked.
Phantom chewed on the question. “Nah. Well um, trick question, actually. Probably not. Assuming I do this right, then no one has even realized I’m gone.”
“Do what ‘right’?”
“You know that thing about Clockwork I explained?”
“You said he’s the ghost that controls time and reality.”
“Yeah. SUPER powerful.”
“And you said you …were from one of those other realities.”
Phantom nodded. “Maybe I touched some things in Clockwork’s lair I wasn’t actually allowed to touch. Jury’s still out on whether I’m in trouble for that or not. I’ve been a little too ‘stuck in this reality’ to know if Clockwork is pissed. But yeah, I got um, bopped into your reality instead of mine. So technically my reality is lacking me right now, and yeah there’s people there who’d know I’m missing.”
Phantom flipped upside-down, as though laying on his back. He rested his palms beneath his head, elbows out, suspended in an invisible hammock, head tilted far back so that he still stared at Maddie. “Especially since it’s been, what, a month that I’ve been gone?”
“2 weeks.”
“What? No way. I’ve been here absolutely forever it has to have been at least a month.”
“This is day 14 of your observation, Phantom.”
Phantom blew a strand of hair out of his face. “Anyway. Two weeks is still long enough to have a search party out on my butt. But whether or not that’s happened is up to – it’s kind of a Schrodinger thing. Because here’s my strategy. Assuming Clockwork hasn’t banned me from reality-hopping forever, I can just get him to send me back to my own reality at the precise moment in time I vanished. And then bam, no one ever knows I was gone. And it makes no difference whether I do that today, or next week, or next month. So assuming you eventually let me go, then I’m all set there.”
“You say that almost like you don’t care when it happens.”
“I dunno, more like I’m just not losing sleep over it. It’s not like I have a say in the matter. You do. I don’t.”
“Is the time you spend here just meaningless, to you?”
“I wouldn’t say meaningless. I’m still aging goddammit.”
“You’re a ghost.”
“I’m complex.” Phantom flipped right-side-up again. “If I start growing facial hair, send me back. I’m gonna have some awkward questions to answer if I show up again with a ghost beard suddenly.”
“…And what if I never send you back?” Maddie asked, careful with her words. “How does your plan work if you stay here forever? If I destroy you first?”
“Um. …It doesn’t, I guess.” Phantom set a hand to his chin, thinking. “Yeah um, please don’t do that. I don’t wanna worry my whole family like that.”
“Do you really mean that?”
“What part?”
“That you have a family.”
“I mean. I think that came up in Interrogation Session #3. Consult your notes.”
“I just have a hard time believing you.”
“Because I’m a ghost?”
“Yes.”
“I’m a complex ghost.”
“I know. You keep saying that.”
“It’s true.”
Silence filtered in between them.
“…What is your family like, Phantom?”
Phantom stiffened a fraction, his eyes finding Maddie’s and shifting away. “Oh, you know, family.”
“Do they exist here too?”
“Huh?”
“You’re from another reality, at least you’re claiming you are.”
“I gotta be. The me from this reality died 6 months ago, didn’t he?”
“The you from most realities is dead, Phantom. You’re a ghost.”
“A complex ghost.”
“The you from this reality was destroyed 6 months ago.”
“Which you validated with your own sciencey equipment, right? You said so! So you know I’m not lying. Unless you think I recombobulated myself from being a protoplasmic smear on the sidewalk.” Phantom caught himself, registering the flinch in Maddie’s body. He deflated a bit, eyes averted. “S-sorry. Inconsiderate phrasing.”
“Why?” Maddie asked, tone flat, blunt.
Phantom’s eyes shifted back. “Um. Just. You know. That accident was. There were um, you know—”
“Human causalities.”
Phantom squirmed. “We don’t have to talk about that, you know? No one wants to talk about that. Okay as a ghost I guess ‘talking about how I died’ is sort of a bit more normal, but this is weird yeah, ‘talking about how an alternate-me died permanently’? That’s morbid. No one wants to talk about that.”
“Okay then. You can go back to answering my previous question.”
“Um. I forget.”
“Does your family exist in this reality?”
“Um, well who really knows, you know? I had like a grand total of 20 minutes of freedom in this reality before you captured me, so, don’t ask me like I’m any kind of expert about your reality. What’s it matter?”
“I want to know if there’s anyone in this reality who’s mourning you.”
Phantom’s face schismed with surprise. His front dropped, and the first look of genuine emotion sank into his glowing eyes. “Woah… That’s um, weirdly nice, of you, I guess. Why do you… want to know?”
Maddie said nothing.
“I. Um. I think the answer is no? So don’t um. Worry about that. If you were worried? Which is weird. I’m the enemy, aren’t I? Evil spooky ghost to be studied?”
“I’m not so sure what you are…” Maddie answered. “I heard you got destroyed trying to save them.”
“The um… the human casualties?”
“Yes.”
“I said we don’t have to talk about that.”
“Phantom.”
“What?”
“Do you know who they were?”
“The… casualties?”
“Yes.”
“Come on we’re on a different topic now.”
“Do you know who they were?”
“I don’t—how’m I supposed to know? I don’t know how I died here, you know? You think I’ve got some kind of like… parallel-universe death vision?”
“So you don’t know?”
“N-no.”
“I have a different question, then.”
“Okay, good, because I haven’t been liking these previous ones.”
“Are you staying just to keep me company?”
Phantom faltered. He looked left, then right, hand scratching at his chin. “I’m staying because I’m in a ghost-proof box.”
“It’s not ghost-proof anymore. The shields are down.”
“I feel like you’re circling around some accusation I’m not smart enough to follow. This feels like entrapment.”
“Then I’ll be more direct.”
“Oh no there is an accusation.”
“I think you do know how you were destroyed in this universe, Phantom.” Maddie took a step forward, and she let her left hand touch the glass, eyes focused on her fingers. “I think you know what happened at the Nasty Burger.”
“That’s—um—the human food… consumption… location… that the local human adolescents meet at, yes?”
Maddie looked up, and she locked Phantom with her stare. He squirmed, and he relented.
“I um…” he continued. “I—yeah—yeah, okay? I know about the Nasty Burger accident. It was supposed to happen to me too in my reality but I—Clockwork—stopped it from happening in my reality.” Phantom glanced left, right, as if staring beyond the confines of his cage. “When I first got knocked into this reality, I went to go find the Fenton portal so I could try to refind Clockwork and fix this and… Well it wasn’t there. And I tried to find some people I know and… I checked out the library in case the Fentons just lived somewhere else and. I um. I found the articles.” His eyes focused on hers again. “They all say you were the only survivor, yeah…?”
“I was sick, that day. It was just a cold. My husband Jack went without me.”
“I’m sorry…”
“It took my daughter and my son too.”
“I’m so sorry…”
“And it destroyed you.”
Phantom opened his mouth, but no words followed.
Maddie looked up.
“You knew this. You’ve known this ever since I captured you.” Maddie let her hand slide away from the glass. “Did you let me capture you?”
“Why would I let you capture me?”
“Because you feel sorry for me.”
Phantom’s eyes flickered about, unwilling to meet hers. “…Nah. Nah. I don’t—come on ‘sorry’? I’m a ghost you know? Bane of humanity! We’re enemies. You were just too skilled a hunter and you captured me.”
“And yet you won’t leave.”
Phantom lapsed silent.
“I um… I wasn’t happy to read about—to know the, the thing at the Nasty Burger happened here, okay? That’s something that I kinda didn’t want to believe existed in any reality anymore, but I guess… And if you were still alive. I was… maybe just kind of happy to see you? That you were okay. And still hunting. That was kind of, like a small relief.” Phantom glanced away, back again. “I wasn’t evil, you know. In my reality or this one. I care about what happened to the Fentons…”
“You let me capture you. …And you did it because you thought it would be a nice thing for you to do for me.”
“I Just—I thought maybe, um… I mean when you phrase it like that. I mean what else could cheer up renowned ghost hunter Maddie Fenton quite like a ghost subject to study? Me, especially? The ghost boy or public enemy #1 or whatever. I’m fun, aren’t I?”
Silently, Maddie pushed away from Phantom’s cage. She moved to the control panel, stiff movements and numb fingers. She entered the release code into the console, and unslung the key from her neck to twist into the override, and she threw down each successive lever in the row of four lining the top of the mechanisms.
The scrape of glass sliding away sounded behind her. All four walls of Phantom’s enclosure dropped away, metal mesh sliding away piece-meal. Phantom stared at her, blinking, floating in place.
“You’re free to go, Phantom.”
“I—uh—well hang on, I don’t think the Guys In White would be too happy about that. You can’t just let me—”
“Go, Phantom.”
“They could like, fire you.”
“I don’t care about this job.”
“I—come on, you still wanna study me, don’t you? Chat with me? If you feel bad maybe just get me a couch and some video games for my cage then I’ll be—”
“Phantom.”
“What?”
“Go home to your family.”
The half-hearted smile dropped from Phantom’s face.
“Come on. You can’t just evict me on such short notice. I’m not ready for Clockwork to kick my ass so soon.”
“Go home.”
“I’m not in any rush! I like talking to you. Don’t you—don’t you like talking to me too? In like a scientific way?”
Maddie lowered herself into the chair by the control panel. She leaned forward, arms pooled in her lap, eyes to the floor. “You have a family to get back to, Phantom.”
“It’s—there’s time travel shenanigans! Like I said they don’t even know I’m gone.”
“Every single day, Phantom,” Maddie looked up, eyes stern, “…I wish every single day that my own family would just come back home. I won’t do the same to you. I won’t do the same to your family.”
Phantom said nothing. A somber acceptance sunk into his eyes.
“They’re… alive, you know. In my dimension.”
Maddie dropped her head, and she blinked away the wetness in her eyes.
“I actually… in my dimension I’m kind of closer to the Fentons than I think the, the Phantom in this dimension was. It’s… complex.”
Maddie said nothing. Silence built between them.
“Jazz is um… Jazz is applying for colleges, y-you know. She got in early-acceptance to Yale but um, we all—they all—visited Columbia last month and I think that’s what she wants the most. I can see Jazz in New York City. I think she’d rock it.”
Maddie blinked again. Tears plicked into her lap.
“…Should I stop?”
“Jack… Tell me about Jack.”
“Oh. Yeah he um… big and goofy as ever. He’s got some kind of eight-armed-octogun he’s working on. I know because I was his target practice, involuntarily by the way. He keeps trying to merge “Fenton” and “octopus” together with mixed results. We—Mo-addie—you… are still trying to talk him out of ‘Fentoctopus’.”
Maddie’s ribcage shuddered, a repressed sob, a repressed laugh.
“And Danny?”
“Danny… um… Danny is...” Phantom’s shoulders fell a little bit. He looked away, and then back at Maddie. “He loves you. I know that.”
Maddie blinked, and blinked again, and her eyes wouldn’t clear.
“And are they happy?”
“They’re happy.”
“Am I happy…?”
“You’re…” Phantom’s tail bounced. “You’re happy, I think. I like to think so. I think you’re very happy. You have a great family.”
Maddie nodded.
“Now go.”
“But I still—”
Maddie reached forward, and she grabbed the ecto-gun propped against the control panel. She lifted it into her shoulder, and flicked the safety, and the charge built along the rising whine.
“Go.”
Phantom balked. He blinked. He kicked away from his wall-less cage. “Not forever. I’ll be back. You won’t be alone here forever.”
He was gone.
And Maddie was alone again.
…
Clockwork surveyed the boy in front of him whose head was bowed nearly to the floor, white bangs trailing along cobblestone, hands clasped, apologies repeated, begging case made.
Clockwork ran a hand along his beard, which unfurled, drew back, undid itself with the shifting of his form to a simple child.
“So let’s see. You have the audacity to break my rules andbeg me to meddle on your behalf in the time stream, all in the same breath? Apologies don’t usually come with additional requests for favors.”
“I know,” Danny’s head dipped lower. “You can punish me however you want for touching the restricted timelines but you have to help it, or let me help this one timeline. Please, please just send me back to the Nasty Burger incident so I can save it.”
“It’s already been saved.”
Danny faltered. He looked up.
“You died at the Nasty Burger incident that night,” Clockwork elaborated, form shifting older. “There is no you to ruin that future. That timeline is safe. It’s a very lucky timeline.”
Danny blinked. “N-no. No that’s not what I mean. Save it like you saved my timeline.”
“That did happen. You’re describing your own timeline.”
“I mean do it to THAT one.”
“You are misunderstanding timelines.”
Danny lapsed silent. Worry bled into his eyes, and Clockwork sighed.
“There is no undoing timelines, Danny. There is only forking them by meddling in the stream. All futures and pasts you witness exist, and do exist, and continue to exist,” Clockwork paused, “with the exception of realities I needed to cull, to prevent utter catastrophe.” His gaze fixed on Danny. “The futures that your evil self destroyed, I did have to cull. And culling a reality is not to be done lightly.”
Clockwork motioned with his staff. “There were a handful of surviving realities that I was able to save. That room you meddled in without my permission—they contain the realities off the main track where, for one reason or another, something else succeeded at destroying your future self. …Your own deaths, in fact. In every one of those realities, Danny, you are dead.”
“I don’t…” Danny shook his head. “So then just tell me how to save that one I was in, okay?”
“Oh, that’s easy.”
“How?”
“You don’t.”
Danny said nothing. Clockwork shifted young.
“You can let it live on in that room, or you could ask me to cull it, Danny. You could ask me to cull every reality in that room, so that the main branch, the one you’re from, is the only reality in existence. So you never have to worry about any existence where your family is unhappy. And it will be that way until you, or I, or someone else, meddles with the timestreams again, and more splits occur.”
Still, Danny said nothing. Clockwork continued.
“Sometimes, a mass culling of realities is healthy for the tree of time, like pruning a plant down to its stalk to survive an unforgiving winter, or a terrible disease. But I did that, just recently, to save all of time from the blight of your future self. It would feel cruel to snip off the first buds that have come after the frost.”
Danny lowered himself to the floor.
“Okay…”
“Okay?”
He nodded. “Okay. Just. I have a different question then.” He looked up, a young devastation wet in his eyes. “Can I still go back and visit that reality, sometimes?”
“No. I cannot give you permission to do that.”
“Please!”
Clockwork spun his staff. A portal swirled into being in the space between him and Danny. Washes of color formed patterns, shapes, objects, images. Like a mirror, it reflected Clockwork’s lair beyond its shimmering surface.
“This is a portal back into your own reality. It is set to the location and the time that you vanished. Go there, and leave through the Fenton portal, and nothing will be amiss.”
“No. No no I won’t. Clockwork you have to let me—”
“I am doing you a favor, Danny, getting you home after you caused more trouble. Do not make further demands of me.” Clockwork curled forward, old, sallow skin sagging, and he turned his back to Danny.
“You have to give me permission—”
“I am the only one who has permission to meddle in realities, Danny. This is an absolute.” Clockwork glanced over his shoulder. “And because this is an absolute, I have no reason to have a lock on the room housing those budding other realities.”
Danny blinked.
“I wonder if anyone might break my rules anyway. I wonder if anyone might be nosy, and enter that room anyway, and water the plants in that greenhouse without my permission.” Clockwork stared forward again.
“Clockwork…”
“Luckily I am the master of all time. I would be able to see this coming. And maybe plan for it. If ever such a person would come into my lair, and meddle in my timelines, and try to spread a bit of his own kindness to the realities he couldn’t quite save, I would be fully prepared to stop him.” Clockwork spoke into the green abyss beyond him. “Unless, maybe, I were to accidentally have my back turned.”
Silence trailed after Clockwork’s words. He kept his back to Danny, staring into the abyss of swirling green ether beyond.
“…Thank you,” Danny answered, quietly. “I’ll be back.”
“I imagine you will. Those realities may get lonely without you.”
When Clockwork glanced back over his shoulder, both Danny and the portal were gone.

Ugh, I have so much to say about this.
1) Children live in the community. They can infect parents, grandparents and others with covid, not just teachers. I know so many children who have lost someone close to them during the pandemic, and it has a real negative impact. There are studies that say losing a parent at a young age is the worst thing for a child's life chances.
2) Children in this age group can get seriously ill with covid - I know kids who have had 6 weeks off school with it because they were so poorly, kids still feeling the impact 3 months later so they can't play their sport or exercise. And, unfortunately, I know someone in this age group who is in hospital, right now, on oxygen, due to covid. She does have a health condition, but prior to this she was able to live a normal life. Now, who knows?
3) Last year, I honestly think teachers worked harder than ever. Balancing the demands of remote and in school education, running testing, keeping up with ever changing rules, enforcing bubbles, enforcing mask wearing. We didn't stop during lockdown, I was in school every week and remote teaching for several hours each day when I wasn't. I was regularly on the phone to students and their families who were facing really difficult times. And then coming back to school, organising more testing, looking after kids who'd had a really difficult time, getting TAGs done despite the ever changing guidance on that. And after that was done, being really hit by covid again, kids off, teachers off, the school on it's knees, everyone doing an insane amount of cover just to keep it open. Yes, things were cancelled during this period, but the core functions of the school kept going. And all of this whilst unvaccinated/not fully vaccinated, so I was very scared of catching covid.
Anyway, last year fucking sucked and I'd like to meet this guy, who probably spent the past 18 months working from home and not dealing with half of this stress. I'd happily punch him.

2022 Plans and Goals
I actually gave up making new years resolutions many years ago because I never stuck to them. I’m not about to change that, but I have some things I’d like to achieve in 2022, so I want to make plans. Plans that I actively work towards achieving. I want to update every month (or week?) with the steps I took towards achieving that goal to encourage me to actually work on them, even if it’s only a little.
Anyway, these are the goals I have in mind (under a cut because it’s long)
1. Pass the Bergenstest
Obviously this is my number 1 language priority! My written test is booked for the 1st of April. I’ve not booked the spoken test yet, but I might have to wait until September as I’ve not had any response from the UK test centres about taking the spoken test and I can’t afford to go to Norway twice in one month.
2. Pull all my skills up to C1 level
At the moment, I think my reading/listening are about C1 level (not a high C1 though), but my speaking/writing are definitely not at that level. It might be a little ambitious to think I could get to that level overall this coming year, but I intend to try!
3. Complete Norwegian Tutor and Enjoy Norwegian textbooks
I’ve had both of these books for ages and I’ve still not finished them. I have maybe 5 chapters left of Norwegian Tutor, but I’ve barely done more than flick through Enjoy Norwegian. It’d be nice to complete them both!
4. Intensively study another language for 3 months (?)
After I’ve passed the Bergenstest, I want to spend some time on a different language. I might pick up Spanish again, or maybe Japanese, but I’m also tempted to start a completely new language and see how good I can get in 3 months (probably Russian because I have so many Russian students). I’m still not 100% decided I’ll do this at all. At the moment I’m leaning towards Japanese because my mum got me some Japanese bilingual short stories and Genki for Christmas, but we’ll see!
Non-Language Goals/Plans
Although I won’t really post about these on this blog, I’m putting them here as a record for myself, as well as for accountability’s sake.
5. Move out of my current house
I’ve lived here for 10 years, and now with my boyfriend living with me it’s just too small. I’d never planned for us to live here together, and certainly not for 3 years. We need to move out. It’s gonna be an absolute ballache, but it’ll be worth it! I think my goal for January is to make a list of all the things that need fixing/replacing and planning a timeline/budget for that (it’s gonna be expensive ugh but hopefully my dad will help seeing as we have joint ownership and all).
6. Learn to fan dance properly
I love my fans! But I currently feel like I just wave them around disjointedly while awkwardly walking/running around. Of course, this goal isn’t easy to measure, so here’s some measurable goals I can work towards:
Perfect antispin flowers
Learn simple body tracing patterns
Learn reels and weaves
Perform smooth transitions between different patterns
See a noticeable difference in my performance skills when comparing two videos side by side
I may also track the time I spend practising. Of course, I’ll keep track of this goal properly on my performer side blog @jo-jenova
7. Go to the dentist
This is super embarrassing to admit (and I’m sure some of you will be horrified) but I’ve been avoiding the dentist for years. I hate them and I’m terrified that they’ll tell me I need to spend thousands to fix my teeth. But if that’s the case then ignoring it isn’t going to make it go away, soo... I need to pull myself together and just do it lol.
8. Prioritise my health more
*Quick trigger warning for mentions of food, diet, exercise and weight loss. Scroll down to the next heading if you don’t want to read this bit!*
I used to train 10-15 hours a week and eat at least semi-healthy. Now I barely exercise and eat a lot of junk food. I’m pretty sure this is at least partially responsible for my lack of energy and I just don’t feel like me, really. So I want to change some things, for example:
Move daily, even if it’s just 10-15 minutes of yoga
Swap unhealthy snacks for fruit and veggies
Stop snacking right before mealtimes
Drink water instead of pepsi max and tea
Cut down on meat
Eat mostly home cooked meals / cut down on takeaways
Stop eating after 9pm
I plan to focus on one aspect every couple of weeks (rather than trying to do everything at once). So one fortnight I’ll focus on increasing my exercise, then the next I’ll focus on eating more fruit and vegetables, then drinking water etc. And if during the weeks I’m focusing on water intake my fruit/veg intake drops off, that’s okay. If I can keep it up, awesome. I just don’t want the pressure on myself to do all of these things all of the time. Maybe I’ll have a primary goal for each month and a secondary goal.
** End of trigger warning **
I may think of some more things to add to this list, but this is all I’ve got for now! I’m going into this year with a surprising amount of positivity given the past two years have uh. sucked. C’mon 2022, don’t let me down!
What goals do you guys have?

Writing Reference: Note-Taking
This isn’t a fun or interesting fact but, I take a lot of notes.
I take notes in class for university.
I annotate the books I read because I know no chill.
I take notes during meetings because how in the world do people remember stuff?
I take notes about my book, create maps, timelines and random facts upon random facts.
I take a lot of notes. Both out of necessity and just, really enjoying note taking.
Just look at this school notes from a couple of months ago!
I love note taking.
So, as someone who had tried many different note taking methods and you know, goes to university with lots of different people, here are some random things I’ve noticed:
1.- There are two kinds of people where it comes to note taking, typing or writing. This can also depend on the class and the teacher, but usually people who type are the kind of people who take note of EVERYTHING. Every word the teacher, team leader, whoever says, goes onto paper.
Personally, this method does not work for me, but I know a lot of people do this in the moment and then later read them and creates diagrams and stuff. I can get behind that, I just never have time for this later on.
People who do paper notes tend to be more picky with what they write because they don’t have time to get it all down, thereby they will be paying closer attention to get the right stuff down. They still might need to tidy it up later, depends on how neat they’re handwriting is.
2.- Everybody’s note taking method will change when they are taking notes for other people. Perhaps you make it more neat, perhaps things you already knew and wouldn’t otherwise write down get written down.
When I’m taking notes for other people I will color code everything. Because my notes are digital I have unlimited colours, so every single number in a practical exercise can be traced through colour.
My best friend in uni will write everything down where usually she only takes note of what she cared about and my other friend will tidy up there hand writing.
It’s like when people act different with a camera on them, same principle.
3.- Some people use art in their note taking. As a kid I did this a lot, next to almost every word I’d have a picture, I claimed it helped me remember. But really it was probably because doodling helps me pay attention and I’m used to getting in trouble for it as a kid. But I know people who do this to make there notes more visible because that’s their prefered study method.
4.- Some people like to keep all their notes in one place, they’ll do this by using post-its and having all the writing inside the textbook, or writing on a printed out version of the PowerPoints.
Other people do the opposite, they’ll have a notebook for theory, a notebook for exercises and the book. Having it all together just makes it too overwhelming.
I love how different our brains can be. It’s amazing.
5.- Another reason hand written notes are sometimes preferred over digital can be readability. So, reading printed word can sometimes be difficult, I can’t keep track of what sentence I’m on, the letters get mixed up and I have no visual recollection of what the page looked like after. I rarely struggle with my own hand writing.
I know this is random and specific, but for these kind of oddly specific details are what really sells characters.
6.- Once you get to your last year in university, you don’t care about how professional or unprofessional you look. I have no problem covering my laptop with kitten stickers, I have no trouble doing an exam with my dragon pen. The first year of uni it felt like everybody was trying to look “normal” or “professional”, but each passing year we gives less cares and have more fun with our time here. So don’t bother to hide your character’s creativity, take notes on pink paper with purple ink and cute pen.
Do perhaps keep in mind that professors won’t let you hand that in. We’re talking notes not homework.
EXTRA: Not exactly about note-taking, but about perception. If you take beautiful notes and your sat somewhere professors can see you, expect them to take note. I’ve had plenty of teachers ask me about my methods, ask me what I do with it at the end of the year and make comments in class about how I must be extremely appreciated by my classmates when they miss class.
I also asked for notes often by classmates.
So if you’re making a character who is very academically inclined, might be worth noting. Also, I treat my notes a bit like an art. They take a lot of time and effort and I know from experience, if you share notes, they will get everywhere and to everyone so I tend not to share. Unless with my very close classmates I usually just explain what was given in typed text.
I’m not saying everyone is like this, but I know a good few people who are protective of there notes. So if your character spends a long time taking very high effort notes, it’s worth noting they may not be open to sharing. But I mean, you’ll know your character better than me.
As usual, check out my book, stories I’ve written plus other social medias: here.
I’m thinking of doing a whole por on University and academic life, but at the same time I know Spanish Universities work kinda strangely in comparison to other countries and I don’t want to confuse people. But what would you guys like?

the graphs don't lie
I did a sleep study last week. Out in 20 minutes, didn't wake up at all till they forced me awake at 6am. Told them it was exactly as if I'd slept at home. Compared to most of the other patients looking zombified by a terrible night's sleep, I was fine.
Yesterday the doctor showed me the graph and gave my official diagnosis of an ailment I've known I have for 8 months.
I have IH, idiopathic (unexplained) hypersomnia (tired a lot). Although it felt like a completely normal sleep, I only got around 15 minutes of REM (opposed to the normal cycles of 60 min 2-4 times per sleep) and never hit deep sleep at all. Literally 0%. This more than anything absolutely shocked the doctor. Even those with a bad night's sleep don't spend anywhere near the 90% of time I spent in Stage 2.
Deep sleep (stage 3) is the part that regenerates and refreshes your brain. For 6/7h of my sleep, I was in something of a limbo, stage 2.
Stage 2 is meant to be a 20 minute occurrence before entering and after exiting REM. A little buffer for your brain to chill. Instead I just went there and stayed there. This is the one stage where the brain really does almost nothing. Probably cuz I'm constantly tired and it always wants a breather, and has little time to do much cranial paperwork (stage 3) if you get what I mean.
But I realized I had IH 8 months ago, only officially conformed yesterday. I've never had a medical professional say "You have this disease". More times that I can count, I've been told I'm tired because of lack of exercise, bad diet, my meds, depression. But I have clocked months at a time without being medicated, where I exercised, and when I had a good diet, literally with the sole purpose of proving to doctors that this is not about meds or living a healthy life. Most continued to completely disregard this fact and point out that, did I know, clonazepam can make you tired? Yes, I know. Which is why I forced myself to get off every drug to prove my goddamn point that "clonazepam sleepy" isn't the fucking answer. Unfortunately, most doctors are fucking idiots that aren't qualified to manage a lunch rush at McDonald's.
But today, finally, during a 20-min video call, the Dr. never once attributed my exhaustion to anything but IH. She said that she spent a longer time than usual looking at my study and my (admittedly very large) file. It took her several hours. She realized that in 8 years, there's never been a change in my fatigue despite hundreds of changes in other areas like meds and diet, leading her to believe that this isn't just a part of my many mental illnesses nor benign factors like diet.
I'm on 9 meds and have a billion diagnoses. Hell, let's list 'em: Bipolar 1, Anxiety, CPTSD, BPD, OCD, Anorexia Nervosa, EDNOS, Schizoaffective (4/5 psychs agree, one would argue full-on Schizophrenia), Psychosis, Depressive Catatonia, Addiction (smoking, weed, alcohol), and I'm sure I've forgotten a few dozen more.
Any time before today, a doctor would always throw a dart and pick one medication or mental illness and blame the fact that I have not woken up refreshed in 8 years on whatever their dart hit.
But she put in the work, ran the metaphorical numbers and came out with, "despite all your meds and all your mental illnesses, I am diagnosing you with a disease of exclusion."
"Disease of exclusion" means it's the only answer after accounting for (excluding) every other possibility. It's extremely hard to get diagnosed with one, especially with my phone book of mental illness and accompanying pamphlet of drugs.
But she's right and I've known it for 8 months when I finally discovered IH's existence. I was only diagnosed as Bipolar and not Depressed after my first manic episode at 20. For 7 years prior, I was Depressed, and pissed through dozens of drugs in that time. Then 7 more years of Bipolar drugs.
I think the key thing that made her take me seriously is the fact that I'm on a dose of Adderall that would usually be reserved for the worst sufferers of ADHD. And I can easily pass out an hour after taking it. That's probably the biggest thing that points to IH: even Cocaine Lite can't make me feel awake.
IH has no cure and few treatments besides throwing Adderall and Ritalin at you. But those 2 drugs are nearly identical; if you've tried one you've basically tried both, along with their other siblings I can't name.
But Modafinil is different. It's only ever used to treat Narcolepsy. I do not have Narcolepsy Type 1. I don't even have N2. But after N2 is IH. So by chain of command, it has a chance of working, as IH is technically in the Narcolepsy family.
It's a bit unfortunate, to me, that it took the many, many months of sitting on the sleep study waitlist just for my self-diagnosis to be confirmed and then for a doctor to tell my psychiatrist to get me off Adderall and onto Modafinil. This reads as unfortunate to me because, a week ago, I spoke with my psychiatrist and asked if there were any other drugs like Adderall that might be worth a try, and he said no.
Ritalin is out because I had a psychotic episode after one pill. Luckily, this was when I was already in the hospital. But I actually did name Modafinil because I'd heard of it. And he. Said. No.
So if he doesn't listen to the sleep doctor telling him to put me on it, well, I get to play "wait 6-18 months to find another doctor who will". I'm not a registered patient of the sleep doctor so any recommendations go from her to my family doctor to my psychiatrist. Family doctor is stuck in "must be diet/exercise" mode. Psychiatrist is in "let's get this 5m phone call over with cuz nothing's gonna help you" mode. Finally I get someone in "let's actually think things through for more than 20 seconds" mode and she can't actually give me the one (and quite literally the only) drug that could fix me.
This is already a novel but just one more thing.
I'm Bipolar 1 before anything else. This means, especially since I'm on Adderall which should never be given to Bipolar people, I'm in a state called hypomania. Just one level below "mania", which is one of the few mental illnesses that is portrayed relatively accurately in media. So think that, but a little less intense.
Before IH, I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, despite only having 1 of dozens of symptoms. I didn't get headaches or days where I couldn't leave my bed. I'm literally just tired. 10/10, 24/7, 365d/y. No exceptions. The only reason I'm able to go to sleep is not because I get sleepier but because I decide it's time to take the sleeping pill that will knock me the fuck out. If I don't, I can very easily just stay up all night, and barely feel any different the next day with the exception of hallucinations. This is because you can't, by definition, get more than 10/10 tired. If that's how your entire life is, your brain adapts to the point where it never says "hey, I'm exhausted, let's sleep." It only ever says "damn I'm tired and could sleep at any moment if you let me".
A lot of people don't realize this, and when I tell them I've been up for 3 days they always say something like "guess you aren't always tired haha I'm very clever." No. I simply either chose not to sleep or realized it was already 6am and might as well start another day. I cannot emphasize it enough: 10/10. 24/7. 365d/y. For EIGHT YEARS.
I'm Bipolar and barely feeling anything from 40mg Adderall. This is not normal. While I'm relieved the doctor didn't do the thing all the other ones did, she still handed me a death sentence in the form of never, ever feeling awake again.
Stay Greater,
