Jogging vs running: Which is better for weight loss?
Tumblr media
Weight loss is not exactly a cakewalk – it takes a lot of effort and hard work to shed the extra kilos! But the biggest dilemma you might face on your weight loss journey is choosing the right exercise, especially if hitting the gym is not your cup of tea. If you are one of those who despise the gym, there are plenty of other exercises that can help. Case in point: running and jogging. So, they are amazing exercises but which one is better for you to lose weight – running or jogging? Health Shots reached out to Fitness expert and founder of DtF, Sonia Bakshi to know if running is better for weight loss or jogging!
Running vs Jogging
What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about the differences between running and jogging? You would probably think of jogging as a slow run – which, to a certain extent, is true. Also Read: If you love running, get your form on track with these 5 tricksBakshi says that the main difference between running and jogging is intensity. Running is faster and demands more effort from the heart, lungs, and muscles. It also requires a higher level of overall fitness. Jogging, on the other hand, does not require you to put too much pressure on the body as it takes a much slower and steady pace. As a result, it can be done for longer periods of time. It is also suitable for people of all fitness levels, adds the expert.

Know how to lose weight with running and jogging. Image courtesy: Adobe StockPeople are at a higher risk of getting injured during running. Studies have found that overdoing it or running without a technique can lead to Achilles tendinitis, plantar fascitis, shin splints, stress fractures, and more such injuries. Jogging, on the other hand, doesn’t lead to serious injuries.
Running vs jogging: For weight loss
While the main difference between running and jogging is intensity, the expert says both are an apt choice for someone trying to lose weight. A study published in the Metabolic Syndrome and Related Disorders found that aerobic exercises like running can help reduce belly fat. Jogging, similar to running, is an aerobic exercise that contributes to weight loss. Studies have found that it is an effective way to burn calories and contribute to a calorie deficit. One hour of jogging can help burn approximately 300-500 calories. “Choosing to run or jog will not really affect how much weight you lose because your duration of jogging will be more than the duration of your running,” adds the fitness expert
Things to keep in mind if you are trying to lose weight
As per Bakshi, you should keep a few things in mind whether you start running or jogging to lose weight:1. Start at a slow pace, then progress to jogging, and you can switch to running in a few months.. 2. Don’t overdo it. Have rest days every week to allow your body to heal, especially if you have pain. 3. Choose a softer surface whether you want to run or jog, and avoid running on the road. 4. Do not tilt your head down or slump your shoulders while you run or jog. 5. Maintain a good posture and engage your core while jogging or running. Broaden your chest, and keep it lifted as you draw your shoulder down and back. 6. Keep your hands loose, and use a relaxed arm swing. 7. Avoid hitting the ground with your heel as it may cause your leg to slow down your stride and stress your knees. 8. Do some warm-up exercises and stretches before you start jogging or running. 9. Drink plenty of fluids and take a water bottle with you on your body. You should drink some water before, after, and during the activity. 10. Check with your doctor if engaging in jogging or running is a good idea for you, especially if you are overweight, have injuries, or are above 40 years. Other factors also play a role in weight loss
If you think weight loss is only possible by working out for an hour and eating junk, you’re wrong! Not only is it vital to eat a balanced diet, but you also need to add different forms of workout like strength training, Pilates, or swimming to lose weight and tone up faster, avers Bakshi. So, try to incorporate different exercises in your workout and eat healthy to achieve your weight loss goals. Also, do not forget to consult a professional fitness trainer and a doctor to know what will suit you the best! Read the full article

Is Running Good for Fat Loss?
Tumblr media
Running is a popular form of exercise that is known for its many benefits, including weight loss. But is it particularly good for burning fat? In this article, we'll take a closer look at the science behind running and fat loss to help you understand how it can be an effective tool in your weight loss journey.
Understanding Your Metabolism
Before we dive into the specifics of running and fat loss, it's important to understand how your metabolism works. Your metabolism is the process by which your body converts food into energy. The energy is then used to fuel your body's functions, including exercise. When it comes to weight loss, the key is to create a calorie deficit, which means burning more calories than you consume. This can be achieved through a combination of diet and exercise.
Running and Cardio
Running is considered a cardio exercise, which means it increases your heart rate and breathing for an extended period of time. Cardio exercises, such as running, are often recommended for weight loss because they burn a significant amount of calories. In fact, running at a moderate pace for 30 minutes can burn around 200-300 calories for a person of average weight. This means that regular running can make a big impact on your calorie deficit and help you lose weight.
The Role of EPOC
Another factor to consider when it comes to running and fat loss is the concept of EPOC (Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption). EPOC refers to the increased oxygen uptake that occurs after exercise, which can lead to an increased calorie burn. Studies have shown that high-intensity exercises, such as running, can lead to a higher EPOC effect than low-intensity exercises. This means that running can not only burn calories during the exercise itself, but also continue to burn calories for hours after you've finished your workout.
Targeting Fat Loss
While running can be an effective tool for weight loss, it's important to note that it is not specific to burning fat. When you exercise, your body burns a combination of carbohydrates and fats. The ratio of carbs to fats burned will depend on the intensity of the exercise and your fitness level. To target fat loss specifically, it's recommended to engage in high-intensity interval training (HIIT), which alternates periods of high-intensity exercise with periods of rest or low-intensity exercise. This type of training has been shown to burn more fat than steady-state cardio. Running is a great way to burn calories and lose weight. It's a cardio exercise that can increase your heart rate and breathing for an extended period of time, and it can also lead to a higher EPOC effect. However, it's not specific to burning fat and it's best to combine it with other forms of high-intensity interval training to target fat loss specifically. Remember that a healthy diet and regular exercise routine are essential for weight loss, and always consult with a doctor or a professional before starting any new exercise program.

From Couch to 5K: A Beginner’s Guide to Weight Loss Through Running
Starting a running program can be a game-changer for weight loss, even if you’re starting from scratch. Here’s a simple guide to help you go from couch potato to 5K finisher:
Start Slow: Begin with a walk/run program. Start with 30-minute sessions, alternating between walking and jogging. For example, walk for 4 minutes, then jog for 1 minute.
Build Gradually: Increase your running time gradually. Aim to add 1 minute of running per week, reducing walking time as you build stamina.
Tumblr media
Set Goals: Set short-term goals, like running continuously for 10 minutes, and long-term goals, like completing a 5K. Celebrate each milestone to stay motivated.
Get the Right Gear: Invest in a good pair of running shoes and comfortable workout clothes. Proper gear reduces the risk of injury and makes running more enjoyable.
Stay Hydrated and Eat Well: Proper nutrition and hydration support your running performance and recovery. Focus on a balanced diet rich in protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats.
Rest and Recover: Allow your body time to recover. Incorporate rest days and cross-training activities to avoid burnout and reduce injury risk.
By following these steps, you can transform your fitness routine, achieve your weight loss goals, and enjoy the benefits of running.

After receiving some really hurtful comments from another user of the exercise app I use this morning I had two choices; ignore all the hard work that I've done and not do the goals that I've set myself.... or I could do what I said and jog it out. I'm all for constructive criticism but when it's said solely to hurt that person, that's not cool! There's no such thing as not having the right body ready for something. You're ready when you believe that you're ready. Not when some hurtful arsehole says you should be ready. So here I am, 16st11, jogging it out. My body is ready for running! #aaptiv #wwxaaptiv #bodyconfidence #runningforweightloss #bringiton https://www.instagram.com/p/B1jSzIAnXgs/?igshid=qj01qfas9k01

Today's run was challenging. ~1 mi walked, 1.7 miles ran/sprinted. I dunno if I was lacking protein or if it was just hot/humid, but I was exhausted afterwards 😅

On my run a couple of days ago over by Polecat trail. Now obviously I don't normally do selfie shots but I thought I'd give it a try this time. Unfortunately the sun was too bright behind me for this shot as it blew out the view of the city in the valley below. It's a fairly decent phone pic anyways. Also not present in the shot for obvious reasons are my beloved Ascics running shoes!
