That point from a few reblogs ago that says "Y'all are allowed to hate stuff without trying to make it a sociological, moral or political problem" is true in general. If you like movies that suck, or your fetish squicks me out, or you write stories about ships I hate or whatever, that's fine.
I still say astrology is actually bad.
Astrology is essentializing and it's a failure of basic epistemic hygiene. It puts people in boxes according to irrelevant circumstances at birth based on no evidence. It encourages/excuses discrimination based on those circumstances.
Astrology is less dangerous than biological determinism just because nobody in power is trying to encode it in law right now, not because it's actually a different kind of thing.
it does still make me insane specifically how many queer people lovingly embrace astrology. I went to a poetry workshop yesterday that was genuinely quite good but also included an option to disclose astrology designations during introductions and so many people broke out some variation of "I'm a [x] sum but I have a [y] placement and it SHOWS" girl no it doesn't. that's meaningless correlation you completely invented the causation

genuinely think it's good and healthy to follow at least one person in each of your fandoms who reblogs good gifsets but has just...absolutely dogshit takes on the show, or who ships that ship you despise. keeps things fresh. keeps things grounded. you gotta stay humble
#lauren feels things#fandom#this is mostly a joke post#obviously create the experience on tumblr that yOU want#you are not obligated to do any fucking thing on this website#but like....there are a few people I've been following on my other blog#(my real and anonymous one where I do most of my reblogging/fandom stuff)#and I've been following them for YEARS#or they're mutuals from the fandoms I've written fic for#and they just post the most out of pocket shit#or they ship ships that totally squick me out#or - the most annoying sin of all to me -#they post sanctimonious explanations about how the creators/actors/whatever#really feel THIS way about this particular thing#and all you other fans are wrong#(and like......no they don't. unless that actor or writer has said that#you have no idea they think that. also it doesn't matter what they think.)#but I'm honestly not kidding when I say this makes my personal fandom experience better#bc a) some of these people are just pals I disagree with!#and b) none of them are - like - toxic or anything#there's a certain kind of fandom discourse I do not tolerate#these people are mostly just kind of silly sometimes about stuff#and ultimately harmless#but it helps me understand a fandom better#and the fact that I've been doing it for like a decade now#means that i truly never get offended or hurt or feel any kind of way#when I see a bonkers take on something#bc I'm just like 'oh sure you're wrong but whatever good for you seems like you're having fun'#and sometimes ppl in fandoms take things SO PERSONALLY!#and it's okay that some people who make art you like or amazing gifsets feel differently about the thing you both love

You know that whole "those who do not remember history are doomed to repeat it" thing?
This really is starting to look like TruePhan vs AntiPhan 2.
So maybe everyone should brush up on why that was such a disaster before we irradiate the Phandom for another 10 years.
I'm a cockroach here, but goddamn, even cockroaches get tired of being bombarded after a while.

Ok I don't engage in fandom discourse bc I do not care about it but I will say that I do find it very funny when people clutch their pearls about incest ships which are... well, nearly every major ship in the fandom to some degree, and it's like how are you this upset about it, you have read and watched the yay incest books/show. Like literally the entire targ line is yay incest and every other major house is out there marrying their cousins you are in the wrong fandom my dude.

God every time I see shit like this 🙄
Archive of our Own is an archive. Anyone can join and submit work. Do you know what that means?
It means that you get a whole range of works, from micro to long, from unreadable to unbelievably good.
And kudos to hit ratio isn’t going to tell you jack because everyone’s tastes are different/everyone has different expectations, and for some reason people aren’t being liberal with kudos like? It’s basically a stamp saying; “hey i was here and i read this and i enjoyed it”
Anyway this is all to say that I have clicked on many fics that are not my thing and skipped out of them after a few paragraphs because it really doesn’t take long to know. It didn’t kill me to figure it out myself.
If you REALLY like being told what to read/aren’t capable of deciding for yourself there are almost definitely people with rec-lists for you.
Another AO3 thing I’m curious about, how do yall decide if something is good enough to read? Usually I follow a rule of 1 kudos for every 10 hits. One because it’s easy math and two it’s yet to fail me. Thoughts? Do you just go for it and pray it’s good?

The proship label says nothing about what content a person consumes.
Proship means you have a "ship and let ship" mentality. The "pro" in proship doesn't stand for "problematic."
"Proship means you ship adult x minor." No it doesn't. Proship means you won't harass or belittle someone who does. Proshippers don't assume the moral values of another person based on fanfiction.
There are Proshippers who are uncomfortable with age gap ships, there are Proshippers who are uncomfortable with shipcest, etc. There isn't a human being on the planet who isn't squicked out by some topics and Proshippers aren't a monolith.

someone: I miss when you could ship what you want without other people attacking you based on strict rules.
someone else: yeah man, you're so right, the only rules are- (insert the exact strict rules that the op was rolling their eyes at)
like you fucking idiot.
you're literally embodying exactly the opposite of what the original commenter was saying.
like I get being squicked out by incest and pedophilia ships, but "confirmed sexuality?"
lol, so we can't ship heterosexuals with their dumb gay friends? also "anything problematic" can literally mean anything they don't like.
so.
in summation. what a goddamn moron.
just let people ship whatever.

Is anyone gonna explain to people that ‘proship’ does not actually mean ‘problematic shipping’ or ‘problematic ship’ or are we just going to let this misinformation spread some more?
It means pro-shipping. The prefix pro, meaning ‘supporting.’ In favor of shipping.
It only became a defined position after anti-shippers who initially identified themselves as anti-a specific ship started harassing creators they didn’t like, doxxing them, and trying to get them fired from their irl jobs for shipping reasons around 2014-2016.
So people who had been in fandom for long enough to know where that kind of rhetoric leads (ffnet purges, LJ strikethru, as well as the direct harms caused by doxxing) observed this increasing trend of harassment and rallied to say ‘oh you lot are anti-shipping, as in opposed to certain ships? Well in that case, we are pro-shipping, because we follow the adage of ship and let ship.’
Before that point, it was just basic fandom etiquette to not bother people who ship stuff you don’t like, and to understand that if something squicks you out, it’s not the fault of the people who made it.
If someone says they are pro-ship, it means fuck all about what they actually enjoy in fiction.
It just means they’re opposed to harassing creators for making content that doesn’t cause tangible harm to real people. A better way to understand the ideological position is being anti-harassment and anti-censorship.
I have a lot of ships I find disgusting blacklisted so I don’t have to see them. But I am not interested in forcing people to comply with what I think is gross. That’s what it means.
Curate your online experience, and understand that your disgust response is not a defensible moral indicator or a justification to harass, deplatform, and dox fan writers.

Toxic Proshipper Red Flags!
(Disclaimer, this post is written by a proshipper to help those new to the community.)
Shames you for having squicks/hard limits. While its understandable to be wary of certain groups thanks to antis, not everybody that likes vanilla stuff is an anti.
Makes their posts hard to filter out. Not wanting to put your posts in the main tag of a toxic fandom makes sense, but going above and beyond to make posts difficult to block goes against the ship and let ship mentality.
Refers to ships as 'proships'. It is mostly antis that do this. I assume either a bait account, or people still new to the proship side of this discourse.
Insults shippers, not ships. There are ships that I fucking despise with the wrath of a 1000 dying suns, but that doesn't say anything about the people that ship them other than they have different taste than me. If you see somebody assuming stuff about someone based off what they ship, stay away.

Seeing some takes on the idea of shipping the Yaoqing trio together where people are deeply disappointed and getting moralistic about the age gaps, and saying it's a "bad" ship, and I just.
Listen.
This is a bunch of people who live a ridiculous amount of time. Foxians have the shortest lifespan here, and even they live up to 450 years old. That's insane. Jiaoqiu may have been an adult when Feixiao was a teen, but with a lifespan that crazy, I really don't think their actual age gap matters now that they're all clearly adults with full time jobs and stuff.
You're a long life species on the Xianzhou? When you say you like older men you could be talking about like, dudes in their thousands. You've got as many couples with age gaps in the tens as you've got in the hundreds. We can't reasonably apply normal person age gap ideas to long life species and we shouldn't be trying. Ultimately they're all adults in current canon and it's silly to claim they can't date.
I think it's totally fine if you prefer to view them as platonic or familial, all completely sensible interpretations as always, but you don't have to justify it by claiming that shipping them romantically is somehow bad and morally wrong. It's okay. Hold my hand. Look me in the eyes. You can interpret them as you like. And if the ages make you personally uncomfortable, that's fine, you do not have to engage with the ship, you can block the tag etc. but don't act like it's wrong for it to not bother others.
What squicks you out in fiction isn't universal. Just make peace and ignore it.

It's valid to say that things squick you out without insinuating whoever does ship things with age gaps like that is a bad person. If it was just "hey I don't like LukaMiku when Miku is portrayed as 16, it squicks me out!" instead then it would at least not be combatitive and more respectful of others shipping preferences.
LenKu squicks me out no matter if he's 14 and she's 16 or they're both 30 or 80 years old. I wouldn't call someone "problematic" if they shipped them as teenagers, I'd just ask them to tag it so I could avoid seeing it. Their shipping preferences aren't indicative if they're a bad person IRL.
the point you're not getting is that this ISNT ABOUT THE GODDAMN SHIPS THEMSELVES, it's about a PROBLEMATIC DYNAMIC, i dont particularly hate mikuluka, i only hate when they're portrayed as 16 and 20 in a romantic/sexual relationship, a 4 year age gap isnt bad when they're both adults and are in the same wave, u wanna ship a 26 yo miku with a 30 yo luka? go ahead! but making them 16 and 20 is disgusting and idk wtf is wrong with you to try and defend that from getting called problematic, i dont give a shit if you like it bc i dont know you and it's not my issue, but if you're gonna consume something problematic at least accept that it IS, don't be so petty, let's call things by their names

not sure why people act like self inserts are one of the worst things to happen in a fandom space when it comes down to the following: "i like this thing, and i created a character based off myself to be part of it because i love it so much!" a simple concept, right?
and people have a visceral reaction to this for some reason? it doesn't ruin the sanctity of canon; by that logic, all shipping and headcanons that aren't canon compliant would squick you out. is it a thing where the average person isn't an "expert" in character or story writing, and therefore everything they write about their s/i is bad by default? by that logic, any fanwork is inherently worth less, and we all know (if you aren't an elitist) that isn't true.
even if it's just "for no reason," you don't have to talk about how much you hate it and lay it on so thickly... just say it's not your thing, if you must for whatever reason, and move on. i don't know why it's so difficult to be neutral on something nowadays. just move on.
it's truly lost on me why indulging in something people love via self inserts is this horrendous crime that warrants a "cringe" reaction
