Can we just talk about Elisabeth sladen for a second??? Can we talk about how a normal girl from Merseyside became a feminist icon by staring I'm a B list sci-fi show and never took that position lightly. Can we talk about how she became that icon not just due to the script but because in every scene she was in she took the blandest material and made it art? Can we talk about how everyone that knew her said she was the kindest, most down to earth person that always had time to support the crew and people that were supposedly "below" her on set? Can we talk about how she basically introduced classic doctor who to a whole generation?? (In an episode that butchered Sarah Jane's character by implying she was in love with the doctor but I digress) Can we talk about how in every ep she was in one close up was the most emotionally impactful storytelling you'd ever seen? Can we talk about how she was one of the most talented actors of postwar British television and continued to hone her craft until she was cruelly taken from us far too soon? Can we talk about how her icon of a daughter continues her legacy because she recognises how much Sarah Jane changed not just doctor who but British attitudes towards explicitly feminist protagonists in general? Can we talk about this???

A Marvelous Surprise

I’d always thought that my life was pretty perfect. I had everything I could ever want: a supportive family, great friends, and a boyfriend who was not only incredibly talented but also genuinely kind. My boyfriend was none other than Oscar Piastri, the Formula 1 driver who had taken the world by storm. But, as I found out one sunny afternoon at the racetrack, sometimes even the perfect life has a few extraordinary surprises.

The day started like any other Grand Prix day. I was in the pit lane, surrounded by the clamor of engines and the frenetic energy of the race day preparations. Oscar had been busy with the team, and I was making my way through the paddock, trying to stay out of the way but still soaking in every moment of the high-octane atmosphere.

I had my usual race day ritual—cheering for Oscar from the best spot I could find and, if I had a moment, catching up on social media. My love for Marvel was well-known among my friends, and they had teased me about it endlessly. Every interview I did where I gushed about my favorite characters—Bucky Barnes, played by Sebastian Stan, and my all-time favorite actor, James McAvoy—was met with knowing smiles and playful jabs.

Oscar had heard it all, of course. He was always so patient with my endless Marvel monologues. I had even been lucky enough to attend a few fan events, where my excitement for superheroes could be fully unleashed. But nothing could have prepared me for what was about to happen.

The race was in full swing, and Oscar was driving brilliantly. I was on the edge of my seat, my eyes locked on the track, when my phone buzzed with a new message. I glanced down to see a text from Oscar: “Meet me at the hospitality suite after the race. I have a surprise for you.”

My heart raced—not from the thrill of the race, but from the anticipation of Oscar’s surprise. The remainder of the race felt like it dragged on forever. When Oscar finally crossed the finish line, victorious as always, I couldn’t wait to see him.

After the post-race celebrations, I headed to the hospitality suite. The area was relatively quiet, a stark contrast to the chaos of the pit lane. I entered the suite, expecting to find Oscar waiting with a small token of his appreciation or perhaps just a sweet gesture to celebrate his win.

What I saw instead took my breath away.

The suite was filled with the unmistakable aura of Marvel’s finest. There, standing among the elegant furniture and decorations, were some of my absolute favorites—Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Elizabeth Olsen, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., James McAvoy, Evan Peters, and Anthony Mackie. They were chatting amongst themselves, their faces lit with amusement as they turned to see me enter.

My jaw dropped. My eyes darted between them, not quite believing what I was seeing. I stumbled into the room, feeling like I was walking through a dream.

Oscar stepped up beside me, his grin as wide as ever. “Surprise, YN!” he said, his eyes twinkling with mischief and affection. “I know how much you love Marvel and James McAvoy, so I thought I’d arrange a little meet-and-greet.”

I couldn’t form words. I just stared, blinking rapidly. Chris Evans noticed and chuckled. “I think we broke her,” he said, leaning toward the others.

Elizabeth Olsen came over, her smile warm and genuine. “Hi, YN! I’m Elizabeth. We’ve all heard so much about your love for Bucky Barnes. It’s great to finally meet you!”

Sebastian Stan, ever the charming Bucky, approached with a wink. “Hey there. I see you’re a fan of my alter ego. I have to say, it’s always amazing to meet someone who appreciates Bucky like you do.”

James McAvoy was next. My heart skipped a beat as he extended his hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, YN. I’ve heard you’re quite the fan. Your enthusiasm is contagious.”

I shook his hand, barely able to contain my excitement. “James, I can’t believe it’s really you. You’ve been my favorite actor for as long as I can remember.”

Evan Peters and Anthony Mackie joined in, their smiles infectious. “So, YN, what’s it like having Oscar Piastri as your boyfriend?” Evan asked playfully. “Is he as impressive off the track as he is on it?”

I laughed, still trying to get my head around everything. “Oh, absolutely. He’s amazing.”

Scarlett Johansson then stepped forward, her presence commanding. “YN, I’ve heard so much about your passion for the Marvel universe. It’s wonderful to see such enthusiasm.”

We spent the next few hours in a whirlwind of conversation, photo ops, and laughter. I felt like I was floating on a cloud. Oscar watched with a knowing smile, clearly enjoying the joy his surprise had brought me.

I chatted with each of them about their roles, my favorite scenes, and even got some behind-the-scenes stories. Chris Evans regaled me with tales from the set of the Captain America films, while Robert Downey Jr. shared funny anecdotes about his time as Iron Man.

When it was time to say goodbye, I was reluctant to leave. I hugged each of them, my heart full of gratitude and happiness. “Thank you all so much. This has been a dream come true.”

As I walked out with Oscar by my side, I felt like I was walking on air. “You really outdid yourself this time,” I said, leaning into him.

Oscar kissed my forehead. “I’m glad you enjoyed it. You deserve every bit of happiness.”

The ride back to our hotel was quiet, filled with comfortable silence and shared smiles. I knew I’d be reliving every moment of the day in my mind for a long time. The memories would be a cherished part of my life, thanks to Oscar and his incredible surprise.

As I finally settled into bed, I found myself replaying the day’s events. It felt like I was living in a Marvel movie, where everything came together perfectly in the end. I had my superhero dreams come true, and it was all thanks to the love of my life who knew me better than anyone else.

I absolutely love the voice acting for twisted wonderland. Everyone does an incredible job portraying the characters and making them come to life. But there's just something about Aces' VA that just fits the bratty teenage boy so so so well. Like, he's one of the few that I hear talking, and I just picture the most irritating (this is a compliment) teenager I've ever met. There's so many instances where it comes up, but I think some of the most noticeable lines are the ones where he's teasingly saying Deuce is bullying Epel and when he's calling Jack cold for not immediately agreeing to Orthos' sleepover investigation at ramshackle. He just really embodies the character so well.

Who's your favorite va in twst, if you have any?

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree ^^ Everyone in the TWST VA cast plays their character(s) so well (and this is coming from someone who normally does not pay attention to VAs whatsoever)! It's really amazing particularly because some of the VAs are actually first-time voice actors that have their backgrounds in other entertainment mediums such as stage plays (where the performance is just as much as in their body movements and facial expression as it is in their voice). I'm impressed that they're able to channel so much emotion into their vocal performances.

Ace's VA (Seiichiro Yamashita-san!) is super talented in how he embodies his character. It's exactly as Anon said, you just hear Ace's voice and go, "Yup. That is THE most annoying, bratty ass teenage boy I have ever heard". My favorite lines from Ace are whenever he’s teasing others (his voice has such strong shit-eating grin energy in these moments) and when he’s doing impressions of other characters (he’s so good at doing them; hats off to Yamashita-san for voice acting Ace who voice acts his classmates and teachers 😭)!!

As I said earlier in this post, I'm not super into the VA scene (it's hard for me to remember their names and previous roles), but I can appreciate all of their different voices. My favorite performances tend to be the visceral emotional breakdowns, with some standouts being Silver in book 7 and Idia's crying during his post-OB flashback. If we're talking more generally, I like what I call the "ASMR" voices (soft, calm, and overall pleasant) like J word's and Roro's which probably explains why I like them so much/j.

I think on this fine Saturday afternoon it's a good opportunity to take a breather and remember that there are really no ethical paparazzi pictures. Every single one is inherently exploitative.

Just because photos were taken on a movie set, when someone is 'working,' does not make the practice any less invasive and creepy. Imagine just going about your day, doing your job and having some weirdo snapping pictures of you to sell without your consent for others to endlessly repost online.

There are thousands of pictures of your favourite actor online already. Plenty taken with his knowledge and consent. I'd really like to see more of them on my dash, rather than the creeper shots.

And don't get me started how disseminating these pictures directly leads to people going to said sets. What starts off as admiring how good someone looks has real world implications.

No, hanging around a movie set and disrupting people doing their jobs is not harmless fun or a way to show your appreciation.

If you hang around a movie set, you are a stalker.

Don't tell me that it's okay to take your online admiration for someone offline. You may admire him but he does not, and will never, personally know you. He will never be your friend/boyfriend/daddy. He is a stranger.

The only way meeting your favourite actor is going to happen is at a convention or maaaaaybe a movie premiere if you're incredibly fortunate. You know, places they appear specifically to meet fans (or not in the case of premieres, where the purpose is to promote a movie. Which is also completely understandable if actors don't stop. You are not owed an interaction).

Of course, you cannot help it if you randomly run into someone you admire in the wild. Even then, consider that they probably won't be all too thrilled to be approached in public by a complete stranger. It's up to you to gauge the situation, but remember there is a person at the heart of all of this.

Boundaries and respect are a kindness which deserves to be extended to each and every human being regardless of their looks/talent/fame/wealth.

Fandoms blur those lines a little too often for my liking and I think just scrutinising what you're interacting with, or what behaviour you could be possibly falling down that slippery slope towards is nice to do every once in a while.

I mean no malice with this post and it is not directed at anyone in particular. It's something I cannot help but feel strongly about because I've seen this destructive cycle time and again in fandoms over the years. It's not healthy and it makes us all a little bit more disconnected from our humanity for it...

Pete Appreciation Post

Pete and Nat:

As her partner, he not only handles but actually and actively loves her family.

He goes to Al-Anon meetings WITH her (1x2).

He doesn't show up to Christmas empty handed (to steal Carmy's words that'd make him an asshole). He continues to be joyful and make small talk while being ripped to shreds for his attempt at a funny, genuinely considerate tuna casserole (2x6).

One of Nat's biggest traumas (flashback to 2x6 of Donna grabbing her by the face while threatening to kill herself) is juxtaposed with her greatest joy - ending the day with Pete on the couch watching TV (2x8).

Everything Pete does and says in 2x10. I don't even know where to start. Him so beyond proud and supportive and excited and happy for Nat. Him trying to convince Donna to come inside by playing to their shared pride of Nat (and Carm). His reaction after the conversation with Donna. Chris Witaske you talented actor and Pete you beautiful, patient, loving, understanding, forgiving man.

Pete and Carmy:

Pete makes such an effort with him (to steal Mikey's words he gives like the biggest fuck). He genuinely embraces Carmy and wants so desperately to be embraced by Carmy in return:

He brushes/laughs off an unexplained past incident involving Carmy (and presumably Michael) that sent him to urgent care. Very bro siblings roughhousing behavior (1x2).

He lets Carmy use his and Nat's freezer even though he knows she'll be mad at him for it. Very brothers ganging up on their sister/two siblings scheming against the third (which I imagine happened between the Berzatto siblings so much and in so many combinations) (1x5).

He was so hype and adorably complimentary about Carmy's homemade ecto cooler and ugh I wish Carm had given more credit there because they are clearly just both big nerds at heart (1x4).

He defends Carmy for being called a loser at the catered party by bringing up his career as one of the most lauded chefs (as I've said before, he and Syd were the two members of the Chef Carmy club). And he does so in front of a large and intimidating assortment of friends and family (to paraphrase Carmy paraphrasing Marcus we see that Pete can throw down huh). Very protective big brother vibes (1x4).

He then individually compliments Carmy's courage for leaving home and making an incredible career for himself. He also makes a point to tell him that Nat is proud of him. Emotionally supportive brother behavior (1x4).

He thanks Carmy for letting him be a part of his family! It's beyond sweet to say that to your in laws, but when your in laws are the Berzattos (1x4)?!

Pete And The Berzattos:

He still gets ribbed more than not, but at the end of the day he's accepted.

Carmy saying I kind of like Pete now (1x5).

Stevie saying his heart was in the right place after the tuna faux pas (2x5).

Fak saying he'll be a great daddy (2x10).

Donna congratulating Pete about the baby thus signaling her approval (2x10).

Pete Is An Only Child:

I've been convinced since S1 and S2 only confirmed.

The genuine love and effort he puts into each family member (blood, extended, and honorary) of the Berzattos not only shows Pete is truly a nice guy, but it speaks to his deep desire to be a part of a family - to belong (see all examples above).

We learned Richie and Sydney are only children (It must have been nice to have Nat and Carm. Yeah, now you do too. *sobs*) so another proof point that all partners to the Berzatto siblings are onlys.

Stevie. In his speech, he says You guys have been so kind to me. You let me hang out with your every holiday. I don't have a family like this and I'm really grateful you make space for me at this table and you make time for me on the holidays. You can imagine an exact speech coming from Pete. And like Pete, Stevie genuinely loves and gets along with each of the Berzattos (2x6). A last parallel between these two: Donna speculates if he's gay and that is totally something I can imagine her, Mikey or Richie saying about Pete at first meeting.

Something about not knowing Pete's last name or anything about him outside of his relationships with the Berzattos signals to me he's not from a big family and/or is not close to them and really just exists in the Berzatto cinematic universe.

Takeaways:

Pete is the MVP of The Bear. We better get more of him in S3.

The Berzattos attract only children and strays like moths to a flame.

CALL ME BY FIRE (SEASON 3): Participation of Jeff Satur

Now this has been the most uncanny crossover I never saw coming. A show I've been watching for years, and my introduction to thai BL which initially put Jeff's name on my radar. Here's some context for any fans who have heard of his participation and want to know more.

Call Me by Fire is a mainland Chinese TV competition show. They invite 33 established male celebrities with the goal to form an ultimate "boy band" by the show's conclusion. What tends to be the incredible pulling factor is they'll invite a combination of singers, musicians, actors, dancers, idols, presenters - incredibly well known faces in the industry - many of them hugely respected OGs in their field. (The demographic is usually late 20s+) so there's an intentional sense of maturity, experience and wisdom amongst the ensemble. The emphasis isn't really on forming this 'fictional' boy band, it acts as a mechanism for us to get more up close and personal with these artists. Allowing viewers to appreciate their creative genius, as well as who they are as people.

This show came as a spin off of another series 'Sisters Who Make Waves' which has the exact same premise but for female celebrities. Because it became such an instant hit, they made a male version shortly after.

As a Chinese speaker, I've been watching both shows since they started in 2020. Both are in their third season (with Call Me by Fire broadcasting right now). This year they've decided to include more participants (of mainly Chinese/Asian descent) from America, Korea, Japan, Vietnam and Thailand - along with the majority from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Why I find this show both incredibly entertaining and compelling is because you get to watch spectacular collaborations between some of the most talented artists of this generation, and witness them embark on a journey of brotherhood through a shared love for performance (they live, work and perform together for the duration of the show). For me, theres also a massive nostalgia factor, because a large portion of these artists will be people I grew up watching.

There will be a lot of new attention on this show due to the Jeff's involvement (whose dubbed ‘Luo Jie Fu’ in Chinese). We’re only on Episode 2, and he's already making a huge impression, earning one of two MVPs spots after their first live performance - his group ranking 2nd out of 8, and his personal ranking being 7th overall (based on the live audience popularity vote).

The show is uploaded onto Youtube in full (post-broadcast on a Saturday). Just to warn you, the episodes are usually very, very long (sometimes between 2-3 hours in total), but I personally really enjoy that. There are English subtitles but the translations don’t always capture the nuances.

Jeff is doing a superb job so far and he's very brave for taking this on. He brings something distinctly unique in his showmanship and personal sense of style. It's a daunting prospect for someone who can't speak or understand Chinese, but the other brothers are doing their best to help him feel as welcome and settled in as possible.

genuine question from a baby spn watcher who just started watching in 2024 and is not even done yet: why is there a anti misha and anti Castiel tag on some of your posts? I don't understand what he has done and I'm so confused. I'd really appreciate it if you could explain a little bit on the lore. thanks.

It’s simple really. I do not like the character and I do not like the actor. So, I’ve tagged posts that are negative about those things so people who do enjoy or like them can avoid them if need be. Castiel, as a character, started out okay but due to Misha Collins being… Misha Collins I quickly soured on Castiel altogether. Not the character’s fault, but it couldn’t be helped. Also, I find most of the storylines that include Cas to not serve any real purpose seeing as the character was killed off originally in season 7 and only brought back because destihellers threw a bitch fit. Which isn’t a good look and left a bad taste in my mouth. If you happen to like Castiel/Misha then perhaps I am not the blog for you, but if you enjoy the other content I post then I’d suggest just steering clear of those tags.

In short: Misha has exhibited incredibly problematic behavior by baiting destiel shippers with the promise of Destiel scenes or Destiel being canon, only for that not to happen because it never was going to happen, and continually saying things like, “if the CW weren’t so homophobic Dean and Cas would be balls deep.” He knows that’s false… but panders to them anyway because it’s the only way he can stay relevant… he has no real job prospects, is a z lister at best, and he isn’t like able enough to be hired for anything anyway… besides the few people who actually enjoy him… no one fucking knows that guy. He has very little, if any talent, and he’s crass, pompous, and rude.

I'm making this as contribution to Mairuma Manga's chapter 304

I'm surprised no one said shit on how Clara saved the day with her optimistic and fun personality. Honestly it was unexpected but also unsurprising and comforting that Clara was the one who stopped them. I genuinely thought Ameri was the one who would interrupt but you know, nevermind.

Also it makes sense in a way, Nishi didn't want to make Clara feel left out in the situation so she dropped the bomb (cliffhanger) on us so we would want to remember and look forward to what happened next and that's when Clara came in. The love trio does have to stick together afterall.

So without further a do here are 5 things I love about Clara Valac! Our adorable little charming playful demon!

Clara's amazing nicknames

These three being the dorks that I wouldn't trade for the world.

Like literally Azz-azz and Irumachi sounds so cute wtf- and like other nicknames Eggy-sensei. It reflects her personality well and actually makes her unique. ( I want to say quirky but it sounds weird so no. )

Her voice actor is also delivering her lines incredibly accurate also her voice actor is also known to voice Valac's entire family. Now that's what I called fucking talent. Since we're getting off-topic, let's move on to the next one.

2. Clara's overlooked selflessness.

I hate seeing Clara cry but I have to like put an image to showcase her selfishness.

You know how the netherworld always say that there are rarely other demons who would care for other people than themselves? If Clara was selfish, she wouldn't care for the other demons consent and she could easily force them to play with her.

But no, she wanted people to play with her with consent. She wants the other demon have fun as much as she has. There are many things that she could do but didn't because she cares for other demons feelings. She is a rare demon that wants to play and both side to have fun.

3. Clara has no doubt that Azz-kun and Iruma loves her.

Her eyes shine with utter confidence.

5. Clara's patience and endurance.

This is just adorable-

Clara's patience and endurance is honestly so admirable. I kinda lost count on the times, she endured being left out. We know well that Clara loves Iruma and Azz-kun so much that she doesn't want to ever get separated from them.

So the fact that she endured the clinginess of hers and have patience is so amazing of her. She truly does act like the role of the big sister sometimes. Honestly this is probably one of the few things that Clara does better than Azz-kun because let's be honest, he wouldn't last two weeks of separation from Iruma ( without training that is.).

Does it ever just hit you how fucking talented Noah is? Like, objectively you know this. It's nothing new, but then you're listening to a song of his and just get hit with this feeling of.. WOW! This man is a poet! And he's a composer. He's a singer. He's a musician, a multi instrumentalist at that. He's an actor, voice, stage, tv and movies. But most of all I'm in awe of his musical talent. The music he writes is so well crafted and beautifully performed. To think that this man is able to create these perfect pieces of art out of nothing. Like. There's nothing, the song doesn't exist. And then he just. Sits at his piano and. Makes a song. You know? It's incredible. And yeah, I know that's what all musicians do, but let's face it, not everyone is as talented and authentic as Noah and he doesn't have like a huge machinery behind him crafting these songs. And that's why his songs have so much soul you can sense how he makes music from a place of pure joy of creating and he has things he wants to say and get out in the world. And how lucky are we that we get to enjoy the fruit of his creativity. It's easy to mistake him for being just some guy, like any guy you see walking the streets of Toronto or whatever, but once you know of his talent, you'll never think he's just like any other guy. You'll know he's a very very special somebody. A rare talent and a true artist. I hope he truly understands how loved and cherished and adored and appreciated he is. Not just because he's hot or because he played Patrick on Schitt's Creek, but because he creates something that touches his fans and we see the authenticity of his art and the amount of talent and skills that go into making it. I hope everyone who meets him recognizes that they are in the presence of greatness. And I know he probably doesn't think he's that great or special, but it's our job as his fans to remind him of that. I mean, he's chosen show business after all, at least some part of him craves the applause. And we're more than happy to give it to him, because he gives so much to us. Music that lives in our hearts and minds, as a soundtrack of our lives. Like a gift straight from his fascinating wonderful mind to ours. And isn't that just amazing. The way it allows us to connect to a part of his mind. The part that he's willing to put out there for all of us to see, which is pretty damn brave by the way. Anyway, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to write such a long thing. I just wanted to make a silly little shit post, but once I start waxing poetic about Noah, there's no stopping me. So I watched most of Luo Yunxi's (allegedly) mediocre filmography ... here are some thoughts.

First off, the words (allegedly) mediocre and "TTEOTM" or "Love is Sweet" are not allowed in the same sentence. That's why I wont discuss them here. These dramas are talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique ... next question.

As for the rest... I have some thoughts and I'm willing to share them:

First of all, I enjoyed all of them and that came as a surprise. I had seen fans joke about his filmography with one smiling and one crying eye, voicing that they hope he would soon be a position to pick better scripts. However, on paper I think the scripts weren't bad per se, but the execution is a bit questionable.

The kind of roles he picks ...

... are actually really great. He seem to gravitate towards deeply conflicted and complex characters, that allow emotional and nuanced portrayals. Non of them are perfect, but they try. Sometimes, the script or directing doesn't allow the characters to be as convincing, as they could be. In other cases, the actors he share a scene with, are utterly unconvincing in their performances.

I appreciate that all his chosen dramas have actual plot besides the romantic story and I didn't have to sit through something as boring as a pure romance without any substance (looking at you, Hidden Love). I also would guess, that he chooses his show based on the roles he plays, because those are often considerably better than the script overall.

Trapped by lackluster writing ...

... is a serious problem, especially when it involves cringey lines as well as wattpad level backstories. I think "Lie to Love" had the weakest script, "Broker" had some really over the top and cringe backstories, while "Lightchaser Rescue"'s biggest problem lies with the directing and production. "Princess Silver" was great overall and I wish he played a bigger role. I'm still not sure what went wrong with "And the winner is love", but I guess it's a combination of everything. Kudos to the actors, that pull off these bad or cringe lines with the same level of dedication and passion... I'm sorry, that I had to skip them anyway.

Acting circles around other actors...

... it's not a regular thing, but it tend to happens with some of his FL. It's not even that they are bad actresses per se, but often written with so little character, that there isn't much anyone can bounce off of. Su Xieyi (Cheng Xiao in "Lie to Love") and Chong Xuezhi (Yukee Chen/Chen Yuqi in "And the Winner is Love") are particularly guilty of this. It's also not something that can be blamed on lacking chemistry between the lead actors, as those two did not convey any chemistry with anyone in their perspective shows. A lot of the female characters in cdramas are hard to watch - and it's the main reason I have not been able to watch Ashes of Love yet.

I recently read a reddit post, that pointed out that Luo Yunxi always has good chemistry with his FL, but that those don't necessary give back the same energy. This leads to his characters always seeming more in love with their romantic partners. Luo Yunxi sells every love story... I really wish he would be paired up with more emotive actresses portraying well written characters.

His strengths ...

... lies in costume dramas for sure. He just looks like he came right out of a painting. This is also where his dance background shines the most. His wire and fight scenes are always excellent. However, I do understand that those are strenuous to shoot, particularly in the summer. In addition he excels in portraying suffering and a storm of conflicting emotions. He is a great actor, with exceptional facial expression and good voice acting. As an audience, you can feel his commitment to all of his roles. This becomes even more obvious, once you find out how often he was injured on set and still pulled through. I wont forget that one leaked clip of him doing wire stunts with his wheel chair waiting on the side ...

What I want to see him play in the future....

... is a more comedic costume drama. "Love is Sweet" but with long hair and fight scenes! I also would love to see him as a villain (again), but I guess he has outgrown these roles - at least in dramas. I also need another show similar to TTEOTM, that is more mature than most dramas of this genre and doesn't focus on the romance. Lastly, a 3rd drama with Bai Lu would be great!

What I learned from this going forward ...

... is to give less popular shows a try. So far, some rather popular or loved dramas (Hidden Love, Ashes of Love, Immortal Samsara etc) failed to impress me. I also learned that I need at least one character to latch onto, while starting a show or I will not get into it. A lot of shows sadly lack these convincing and obsession-worthy characters.

Good morning, anon! I just finished a quasi-rewatch of School 2013 (quasi because I had watched most of it before but for reasons having nothing to do with the show never finished it) and my god does it hold up. What an incredible drama, and one that absolutely should not be remade by people who don't understand its themes or take it seriously. *glares at GMMTV*

I was literally just telling @neuroticbookworm and @twig-tea last night that I didn't plan to write about it because this drama is 11 years old and very dearly beloved, so it didn't need another essay from me. But since you asked, I will share a few things that make it so special:

It really understands the function a school plays in a community, how important teachers can be in a young person's life, and the often disheartening limits of what teachers can do.

It treats platonic friendship, and the pain of losing a dear friend who is your family, with the utmost seriousness. Despite what some atrociously titled remakes would have you believe, the arc between Go Nam Soon and Park Heung Soo is not a story about "frenemies." It's a story about best friends and chosen brothers trying desperately to heal from a deep fracture between them.

It really cares about every young person in its story, takes their struggles seriously, and gives them chances to redeem themselves when they make mistakes. This drama believes that every kid, even those who have engaged in violence and bullied others, are worth the effort and can be redeemed.

But it also acknowledges that not everything can be fixed and not every kid with a hard life can be saved. It's gut-wrenching, but it's real, and the failures make the triumphs of the story resonate that much more.

It manages to write so many compelling and deep relationships without ever giving in to the impulse to turn them romantic. There is not a single romance plot in this drama and yet it has some of the best relationships I've ever seen on my screen.

It has a phenomenal cast. Lee Jung Suk and Kim Woo Bin are the obvious standouts, and this show absolutely would not work without them and their unreal platonic chemistry at the center. But it also has Jang Nara and Choi Daniel as our beloved teachers and a cast of very talented young actors playing students (a couple of which would go on to be drama headliners themselves). Even the green actors in the cast lent to the authentic feel of the classroom.

If you haven't watched this one yet (and enjoy crying buckets), I highly recommend putting it on your list and definitely watching the original instead of any imitators. And if you have watched it before, I am happy to report that it holds up spectacularly.

In some of my past comments and posts I've definitely been a bit hard on Luke Newton. So this post will be more of a praise.

Luke takes his acting and his role in Bridgerton very seriously, I really appreciate that. Luke really knows Colin as a character. I love that he goes to all departments to understand where the character is at - I think that is very commendable.

This is also a very lovely nod to all the people who are involved in making a character come to life, its not just the actor, and you can see that Luke knows and appreciates that. A lot of people don't realize that it does take a village, and I like how Luke is very honest with that.

I love that when Luke is talking about the carriage scene in episode 4 he knew that it was such an important scene. His facial acting is always on point (its one of the reasons why I think he is so talented). I'm glad that all of the work put into that scene really paid off and it's getting the praise it deserves.

It seems since the series will continue with more intense intimacy scenes, the two part release may have been a good thing.

I do think that some of Luke's actions have been questionable but I don't think that he is irredeemable. It has to be incredibly hard at times to be in the spot light constantly (the Bridgerton promo is no joke), leave a long-term relationship (they take a lot of time to heal from no matter the circumstances), all the while trying to balance having somewhat of a normal life because we know that Luke is an introvert.

I really am rooting for him, but I am also critical of him because I can't condone some of his actions.

Ship wars and why they don't let us appreciate and enjoy good characters (Akane Kurokawa and Kana Arima). PART 3

Channeling Ai's charisma: ¿Another reason to hate Kana and Akane?

In this post, I'd like to talk about how both Kana and Akane managed to channel a part of the legendary figure known as Ai Hoshino (Akane, by acting like the person who was Ai. Kana, by performing like the idol who was Ai). However, instead of that being a reason to applaud both of them for their incredible abilities as performers in the entertainment industry, it became another reason for anti-fans to hate the characters. The figure of Ai Hoshino as a tool for measuring a person's talent.

At this point, the figure of Ai has practically become the epitome of what a “perfect idol” should be. And even that title has transcended to what a “perfect performer” in general should be. For that reason, the fact that both Kana and Akane came to mirror Ai's talent at one point, is the author's way of telling us how great both of their abilities are as performers. It's not a competition to see who can replace Ai. Of course, it is essential to clarify that, although both characters have suffered criticism from their respective anti-fans, Akane is the character with the most unfair treatment. And this is due to the way in which the antifans have decided to interpret the moment in which she acted as Ai for the reality show.

Anti-fans have never been able to forgive Akane for the fact that her acting had such an impact on Aqua. ¿Why? Because they decided to think that Akane acting as Aqua's mother was going to cause him to fall in love with her. Instead of seeing it as a showcase of Akane's amazing acting skills (the way she can bring a character to life, especially a character as mysterious and with many secrets as Ai) the anti-fans interpreted that action as a threat to their ship AquaxKana. Thanks to that, the antifans have created their own version of the manga, where Akane has copied Ai's personality and acts like her around the clock because she is obsessed with Aqua. A version where they can forget that Akane is an ACTRESS.

“I hate Akane because she only copies Ai.”

Akane didn't copy Ai. She acted like Ai for a job. No one says things like “Andrew Garfield is copying Peter Parker” or “Heath Ledger is copying the Joker”, right? Because it's just wrong to reduce an actor's work to something as basic as “copying”. And all to create illogical reasons that anti-fans use to say that their ship is the right one. “Kana is better for Aqua because she's like Ai without knowing it, it comes naturally to her, not like Akane who just copies her”. (I wish I was making this up, but I've actually seen comments like this). ¿Why forget all the other good attributes of Kana and say she's good for Aqua only “because she resembles Ai/is like Ai” ¿Why reduce a good character to her resemblance to another? When it came to Akane, her impersonating Aqua's mother was “weird” and “creepy” and “toxic”. ¿Why now, with Kana, the exact same thing suddenly becomes a reason for Aqua to love her? It has already been established that to Aqua, Kana is like a light in the darkness. Kana doesn't need to be Ai. During her first concert, a panel of Kana was shown very similar to Ai's, but not to establish that she would be the next Ai, but to show the great potential that Kana has to be an idol. In a way, Akane and Kana haven't let Ai's spirit die completely, and that's wonderful. It's like a way of saying that Ai will live on forever in the next generations of big stars. (If only antifans could see that).
