OC Questionnaire Tag Game

OK, now I've been tagged twice (by @merilles and @linden-leaf - thank you both :D), I am actually going to do this lol...for Nibenaes and Rochind, since we've been talking about them both so much on the Discord!

(I will thus be answering six questions as two people tagged me lol)

1. What's a core lie your character believes about themselves or the world, and where did it originate?

Rochind believes that he's inherently unloveable.

At first, he's supposedly abandoned by his family - when he's found by Fingolfin and Dírist, he's alone with only an injury over his eye. In truth, his family were actually killed by Sauron's werewolves but he doesn't find that out for a very long time.

Then, he's supposedly abandoned by his best (and only) friend when Mentelossë (@elanna-elrondiel's absolutely wonderful OC!) gets whisked away to Gondolin without her being able to say anything to Rochind, and then Dírist - who had become a foster father, of sorts - dies, which is not an abandonment, but Rochind can't quite help but feel like it might be somehow his fault?

Either way, he then meets Nibenaes, the love of his life, (and reunites with Mentelossë) and starts to work through this until The Break-Up™, when Nibenaes - due to her own insecurities - breaks up with him. Even after they get back together, it takes a lot of work for him to believe that she loves him still...

Meanwhile, Nibenaes believes she's cursed and that everything she loves will inevitably fall into shadow and despair.

This, much like Rochind, comes from her childhood where her family and friends when she was young either died or became miserable - her mother, her father (her sister, in an AU where she and Lind's OC Curunís are sisters), her friend Nelladon...

This is why she eventually breaks up with Rochind. After the first age, they get engaged but as they get closer to the wedding, Nibenaes starts to get this terrible feeling that if they bind themselves together, she will be punishing Rochind to eternal darkness or something.

2. Who are/were the most important people in their lives? Did they choose those people for themselves (and would they choose them again)?

For Nibenaes, the most important people in her life would probably be her father before he died, who she would absolutely choose again (and sort of Curunís, who she would also choose again, although this one is a bit more complicated).

For Rochind, the most important people would probably be Dírist (his foster father), Lorast (his horse) and Mentelossë (his best friend) - he would absolutely choose them all again!

And, naturally, they have each other! (And their daughter, Mallos Ilmathir)

3. Is there a choice they've surprised themselves by making?

I think Nibenaes was genuinely surprised at herself when she broke up with Rochind. Like, she had this whole internal thing going on where she thinks she's cursing Rochind, but she is so clingy to him that I don't think she would have thought she would have done it.

As for Rochind, I think he is a lot less impulsive than Nibenaes and so most of his decisions are super thought out before he does them, but I think in some ways - considering how much the break-up hurt him, and how much his friends were telling him he should not get back together with Nibenaes - that getting back together with Nibenaes initially is something that genuinely surprised him.

4. How does your OC present themselves to the world and does it differ from what they are actually like? If so, who do they feel comfortable taking the "mask" off around, and why did that "mask" develop in the first place?

Nibenaes is easy for this one! Her whole smiling, laughing, general manic energy is how she presents to the world in order to be as un-Fëanorian as possible. Since she left her father's side, a lot of her life has been proving to the world that she is Not Like Her Family (as much as she loves them - it's complicated...)

She only really lets her proper friends see beneath that veneer - so that's Rochind, and then Mentë after they become proper friends (which is a long and complicated process) and a few select others (a few other OCs from the Discord, Elrond on occasion...)

Rochind on the other hand is naturally quite reserved, so the quiet, thoughtful elf you meet is who he really is.

5. What is one thing they would change about themselves or the past? Why would they make that change? How would that change affect who they are and the world around them in their current timeline?

For Nibenaes, I think she would never break up with Rochind. It's her greatest regret, even an Age, a wedding and a whole ass child later; she knows how much it hurt her and - more importantly - how much it hurt him.

As for Rochind, I think he would make it so his original family never died. It's one of his things that he has always wanted, to know what his parents were like and whether he had siblings and to remember it (as he has no memories before he was discovered). It would change how he met a lot of the important people in his life but I think he thinks that it would all work out - it's very idealistic whic, frankly, he deserves.

6. Drawing from the language of flowers, what flower(s) would best symbolise them and why?

Ooooh! I love this question, and I have several flowers. I like the idea of them having bouquets in their colours - Rochind's being green and Nibenaes' being purple.

I like the idea of chrysanthemums; they are a sort of greenish colour, which is the colour I associate with Rochind, and their meaning is happiness, long life and joy. I also like the idea of some green herbs like Rosemary (meaning devotion), or mint (specifically spearmint or peppermint which means warmth of feeling).

As for the idea of Lavender which means love, devotion and loyalty, and is a purple (which is Nibenaes' colour). However, there are a few other purple flowers I like the sound of - purple carnation, meaning capriciousness or changeable or whimsical; purple heather meaning solitude; purple hyacinth, meaning sorrow or 'please forgive me' if given to another person; or purple tulip, meaning royalty or rebirth.

i wonder where the idea of chilchuck being a deadbeat came from when theres like. no textual evidence for it ?

he knows what all of them are up to; he still writes to flertom and she sent him his neckwarmer, so that to me implies that they at least have a somewhat positive relationship?

its more ambiguous with meijack and puckpatti, but since meijack is also a picklock, i wouldn't be surprised if he taught her himself, considering how trades are often passed down through families, and because he talks about sending people to her if he dies.

also the way he talks about puckpatti is very like... it's obvious he wants her to take things more seriously, but he's accepting, and his tone here reads more fond to me than anything else.

like, he keeps his daughters' old toys under his desk? that doesn't scream 'deadbeat' at all, it screams 'empty nester' who doesn't know how to reach out or is scared to do so

EDIT: i know a lot of the 'deadbeat dad' stuff is jokes, but some people are Not joking and genuinely think chilchuck is a bad dad. this post is not saying that you cant joke about it; it is just outlining what canon shows regarding his (clearly positive) relationship with his kids.

adventure time lore is insane. it starts off just being a goofy kids show that has magic for no reason, but then you learn that all magic users are manic and/or depressed (what betty calls sadness and madness). because it turns out magic is actually a cosmic force beyond mortal comprehension, that itself was learned from cosmic entities that predated the existence of time itself inside a sea of monsters. and "magic" really is just understanding more about the nature of the universe than most people. that, in a way, reality isnt "real" and understanding that allows you to mold it. and thats magic. but that drives you to insanity and/or apathy. and there are beings who hold significant cosmic importance who are more prone to magic. and the reason magic became prevalent on earth is because of a nuclear war a thousand years ago, which released the entity that represents the destruction of all life onto the world. and after a nuclear apocalypse this gave way to a new earth, where magic could thrive. but a lot of the beings we see arent even magical, theyre just mutants from what happened 1000 years ago. and humanity as we know it has been all but wiped out. but everything stays the same because cycles of war and violence continue. and it doesnt matter if its nukes or magic. everything stays the same, but still changes.

love when men cry about body hair bc "it's hygiene" and yet 15% of cis men leave the bathroom without washing their hands at all and an additional 35% only just wet their hands without using soap. that is nearly half of all men. that means statistically you have probably shaken hands with or been in direct contact with one of these people.

love when men say that women "only want money" when it turns out that even in equal-earning homes, women are actually adding caregiver burdens and housework from previous years, whereas men have been expanding leisure time and hobbies. in equal-earning households, men spend an average of 3.5 hours extra in leisure time per week, which is 182 hours per year - a little over a week of paid vacation time that the other partner does not receive. kinda sounds like he wants her money.

love that men have decided women are frail and weak and annoying when we scream in surprise but it turns out it's actually women who are more reliable in an emergency because men need to be convinced to actually take action and respond to the threat. like, actually, for-real: men experience such a strong sense of pride about their pre-supposed abilities that it gets them and their families killed. they are so used to dismissing women that it literally kills them.

love it. told my father this and he said there's lies, damned lies, and statistics. a year ago i tried to get him to evacuate the house during a flash flood. he ignored me and got injured. he has told me, laughing, that he never washes his hands. he has said in the last week that women are just happier when we're cooking or cleaning.

maybe i'm overly nostalgic. but it didn't used to feel so fucking bleak. it used to feel like at least a little shameful to consider women to be sheep. it just feels like the earth is round and we are still having conversations about it being flat - except these conversations are about the most obvious forms of patriarchy. like, we know about this stuff. we've known since well before the 50's.

recently andrew tate tried to justify cheating on his partner as being the "male prerogative." i don't know what the prerogative for the rest of us would be. just sitting at home, watching the slow erosion of our humanity.
