Made a compilation of my favorite pieces from each month of 2024. Iâll put the template I made in a reblog if anyone wants to use it. Top right of each image lists character and fandom, bottom right is which day of the month I drew it. (which is different to the date it was posted here, in most cases, since this blog runs on a queue thatâs usually around a month long)
Ramblings about each month and the year overall have been placed under a cut.
Itâs interesting looking back⌠I didnât even realize how recent some of this stuff was until I was going through my photos. Like September and October werenât that long ago, but it feels like itâs been ages since I drew those piecesâŚ
Iâd completely forgotten about my brief foray back into dsmp stuff at the start of the year. Sure is wild how many of the creators turned out to be terrible⌠Honestly, thatâs a big part of why I havenât gotten back into it in earnest at any point - every time I feel like Iâm ready to get back into it, some completely insane controversy comes out about another cc and I end up backing off until itâs been long enough that it doesnât feel insensitive to being up the âcharacter =/= creatorâ argument again.
Unsurprisingly, Undertale has a big presence throughout the year, along with Deltarune. No matter how much time goes by, I donât think Iâll ever stop being into it. First ever fandom, you know? Shaped my personality at a formative age, and all that.
I didnât really do much colored stuff in January, apparently. Guess I was more focused on playing around with negative space that month, given the dsmp drawings. (and the Chara one, which is just me doing that but with color. I actually did drawings like that for a couple Undertale characters, but the Chara one was my favorite so thatâs the one that made it in)
In February I drew a whole bunch of Burgerpants. Only grabbed one, since I did some other neat stuff that month too, but there were a whole bunch to pick from. Something about him just really appeals to me. I did some Homestuck that month too, along with a fair bit throughout the rest of the year. Itâs really terrible that Homestuck is so good despite the everything about it. I think itâs going to live rent free in my brain until I die.
In March I did a little bit more dsmp, but Iâm pretty sure it was basically only that drawing. What can I say, nuke imagery is simply too fun to play with. I was really happy with those Undynes as well. I was experimenting with color a lot that month and honestly Iâm still proud of those pieces. I should try doing more stuff like thatâŚ
There must have been something in the water in April, because I was just absolutely churning out some of the best digital paintings of my life⌠that third one especially, with Frisk in the bed of flowers, is just⌠damn, I need to do more stuff like that.
May was another month where I didnât do much colored stuff, but I did do some Trigun art. I think that was probably the month I rewatched the original anime and realized how good it is. The Chara drawing was inspired by - you know those old pieces, I think the artist was called Teoft? They did a series of Undertale pieces with various characters as super ominous looking angels. My style doesnât really carry across vibe as well (at least not with the brush I was using there) but it was fun to play around with and I never get tired of drawing wings.
June is all OC stuff, because thatâs the month before Artfight so I was remastering all my old OC refs. Inevitably, Iâll end up doing that again this year, since Iâve changed a bunch of their outfits since thenâŚ
July is Artfight month, which I usually put this blog on hiatus during, but I ended up drawing so much stuff that year I didnât have to. Like not only was it the most prolific Iâve been as far as Artfight attacks go, but I was also doing enough stuff on top of that to have had genuine trouble picking only four pieces to put here⌠like, again, clearly something in the water.
In August I was playing around with representations of the player in Undertale and Deltarune. Puppet imagery has historically been my go-to for that, but that was around the time I finally played Slay the Princess, so I had hands on the mind too. The eyes were inspired by Murderbot Diaries fanart, because thereâs a character in that series who often gets represented that way and I always thought it looked super cool.
I had a really cool piece I was working on September for the Undertale anniversary, but I never ended up finishing it. So instead thereâs a bunch of Deltarune stuff. I mean, close enough, rightâŚ?
In October we see the first appearances of both Parkciv and ISAT, though my earliest ISAT stuff is actually from late September. All of the Parkciv drawings Iâve posted were done in one day and I havenât drawn anything for it since. ISAT, on the other hand, is still dominating this blog. When the hyperfixation hits, amirite?
November is entirely ISAT, somewhat unsurprisingly. What can I say, I just really like Loop. And drawing them in dresses is fun.
December, on the other hand, is entirely Undertale! Not that it was the only thing I drew necessarily - I did some ISAT stuff too - but that was the month I started my Undertale AU askblog, so it was occupying an even larger portion of my head than it usually does. Actually, the majority of the art I did last month was for the askblog - Iâve been focusing on it pretty hard. Itâs probably the most consistently invested Iâve been in making an au since like⌠Reverietale.
Overall, Iâm really happy with what Iâve made this year. I donât think Iâve necessarily made any insane strides as an artist or anything - I got slightly better at anatomy and perspective, but nothing crazy - but in a lot of ways I think thatâs a mark of how far Iâve come as an artist - that Iâve reached a level where I donât really feel like there are any big changes to my style as a whole I need to make to keep improving, and instead Iâm taking what I already have and refining it. I think over the course of the last year Iâve reached a point where I actually consider my art to be consistently at a professional level.
I think, at some point soon, Iâm going to start actually doing commissions for real. Iâve already got most of the pricing stuff figured outâŚ
Well, happy new year! Despite everything⌠I think Iâm looking forward to the future.

OH HEY WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT IâM BACK
Yall never get regular posts from me omg you guys IâM SO SORRYYYY
but but but but but yaâll wont believe it
I have been⌠DOING ART?! youuuuu heard that right folks i me MYSELF AM d-doing art.
Ok soooo i got a few updates
Life is still incredibly hectic i swear i feel like one of those fanfic writers tha5 post like
Hey sorry it took 8 years i was in a coma! But thankfully thatâs not⌠entirely the case?
Iâm on the list for an appointment to see if i have adhd because hearing my friends who are diagnosed and medicated talk about literally MY EXACT ISSUES AND IT HELPING i was like⌠damm maybe it is the good ol case of audhd ⌠so hopefully hopefully i can get something to help with that!
Uhhh in other news Iâm saving for a laptop so i can get into video editing and idk make some animation memes and animatics!
But ofcourse
Ofcourse
I promised art letâs not dwindle any more!
First of all we have some art i did for my story quest for the moon (i did blur out a bit just cuz well idk my audience that well so iâll be bluring it even though it takes away a bit of context)
Then another piece for that series and then⌠omg.. no way is that?! Is it?!
Hehe surprise letâs get into the first art!

3 GOT ANOTHER REDESIGN AND MIGUELSâS FIRST FULL ART
Welcome welcome to my sweet sweet sweet baby angel boy Three thatâs right heâs been on my mind again so i drew him⌠kinda like a splash art? If he was in a gacha game very cute very demure (if that memeâs old already⌠no itâs not)
And then we have THE VILLAIN of quest for the moon
Miguel also our main character ash in the corner hiiii ash
Miguel is basically like the mentor thatâs secretly just try to steal your powers type heâs very much an opportunist and i love to draw him and loooove to hate him! This piece is basically foreshadowing extravaganza that will⌠eventually be clear i swear I promise I PROMISE but for now enjoy the piece it took sooo long
Next art!
This is still a work in progress itâs not done yet but Iâm incredibly proud of it soooooo Iâm showing it anyway and then weâll get into the surprise
MEET MY SON ALEXANDER
ohhh my goodness after being in art block for so long it feels so nice to just get a solid redes out iâm soooo happy with how heâs turning out AA thatâs my son MY BOY one of my oldest ocâs from so so so so long ago and fun fact i drew both pieces with the exact same brush heheheh the headshot next to him is his brother phoenix
Ok NOW FOR THE SURPRISE
Guess what! Thatâs right i have actually ACTUALLY started finding my way into the new project reignited
Thatâs right we got a MAIN CAST now
Now obviously some are.. easy to find the original inspiration for but they wonât be that similar to the redesigns they used to be no no no
Welcome the new crew of project reignited!
Muse, Plume, Thea, Orianne & caelusss
Muse is the main character a human boy who is just trying his best who gets swooped up into helping a dragon girl save her kingdom and the magical dimension while also fighting to preserve his home town!
Plume a dragon girl (plume, bloom you get the gist) who somehow ended up on earth is now tasked to find help to save her people and mother while also discovering the beauty of earth
Thea the daughter of an urban development company ceo and the love interest of muse (did i get myself this invested into a ship that i made it canon here⌠yes.) sheâs a frail girl but is forced to step in as her fathers ideas turn from helpful to greedy and destructive
Orianne Thea and Museâs friend and the more motherly of the group but faced with difficult circumstances and changes in her life can cause her to lash out as her life is completely steered of its course by magic and her dad remarrying.
Caelus! Museâs closest friend a pretty chill guy that works at an icecream parlour during the week and helps his family with their market food stand in the weekend, he really wants to be a culinary chef but doesnât know if he can truly achieve his goals in his hometown.
Thatâs the gang this will from now on be an original concept and no longer a winx rewrite yes winx will be an inspiration for this work but i do not intend to go the fairy route nor make the world building as big as i had made it in my rewrite⌠what you will see is me taking my rewritten work as a basis for this story considering i have basically rewritten my version of domino, zenith and solaria from scratch sooooo SWEET BABY BOY CRYOS MY BABY will be making a return later on in this story heâs mine heâs my son my boy i can do with his character whatever i pleaseeee ok ty
Thatâs the update thatâs the post thank you all for enjoying my content and my terrible upload schedule life had beeeeeen hectic ty ty hope yaâll stay for more and if this was your first post of mine you sawâŚ. Check out my other work pls and thank u
Oki

hi ian i come bearing angst fuel for the yuusha as twsted elsa (maybe an idea for her possible overblot idk she kinda reads to me as someone whod preemptively isolate in the case she feels...blotty)
(also seeing that art of her playing violin totally didnt fuck me up im still nursing my bruised heart đĽ´đĽ´đđ)
https://youtu.be/NDldNaEZTt8?si=Wm71pgTltuJLjFvk
^^this is from the frozen musical where they gave a song to elsa to explore her emotional turmoil and it just fleshed out her character so much more than the orig movie (ok i havent seen frozen 2 oops) but just this section here:
Is everyone in danger as long as I'm alive?
Was I a monster from the start?
How did I end up with this frozen heart?
Bringing destruction to the stage
Caught in a war that I was never meant to wage
anyways lmao i jus think the song is neat i think yuushas neat (i wanna see more of her ahehehe i love seeing infodumps abt ur yuus)
-diodellet
(throwback to this âwhat if yuu had magicâ ask where i had a â¨realization⨠and this more recent yuusha lore drop that i gave zero elaboration on đ)
very rough ob yuu design??? idk i came up with it on the spot ;;; and itâs kinda based on disneyâs concept art of elsa when she was supposed to be the villain.
evil ice queen vibes :3
also i know the ob monster is supposed to be based on the villainâ which is elsa in this caseâ but lowkey. an ice monster is way cooler.
also also i just realized after i drew this i couldve done a grim/yuu tandem overblot ough đ¤§đ¤§ (next time I'll do that instead if i ever go back to this concept)
(read more below because it got SO long)
AAH anyways hi hi dio!!! when i saw your ask i went â
â with this entire post
AAGH HOW MANY MORE UNINTENTIONAL CONNECTIONS ARE GOING TO BE BETWEEN FROZEN AND YUUSHA
i guess watching the movie everyday when it came out when youâre like 9 does something to your brain chemistry (and still haunts you at least a decade later) đ
but anyways the angst ;;; overblot yuu ;;;;; my brain is rotting and the worms have taken over
also i didnât even know that there was a frozen broadway musical so im gonna have to check it out later đđ¨đ¨đ¨
(also dont worry frozen 2 is a nice watch for the most part but the way they concluded the characters did not feel 100% satisfying to me đ BUT i love some of the songs tho ;;; kristoffâs goofy 80s ballad song is one of them specifically, i need everyone to listen to it)
hfgnnfhfgv anyways thank you so much iâm chugging that angst fuel as i expand more on a possible ob yuusha with another infodump đŞđŞđŞ
â ď¸â ď¸â ď¸ ALSO IM SORRY BUT mentions of taking oneâs own life so please proceed with caution â ď¸â ď¸â ď¸
i had to reread what my initial thoughts about it bc it was months ago??? and after rereading im just like, huh what was i onâ (just that feeling when you just cringe at your old posts ;; but idk i think the insanity/cringe sometimes can loop back into being a genius and the cycle just continues)
anyways iâve been on and off writing yuushaâs bio and overblot yuu was just at the back of my mind chilling but i didnât really do anything with it.
but now that i have the opportunity,,,, im gonna go on the magicless route this time bc i feel like I've said all what i thought if it was an overblot due to her own magic.
so uh from what i gather overblots are a mix of overuse of magic + intense negative emotion.
since itâs magicless yuu, i guess the one of the general headcanons around the fandom is that theyâve been too exposed to overblots and then intense negative emotions suddenly just triggered their overblot.
uh anyways onto the elsa parts
Is everyone in danger as long as I'm alive? Was I a monster from the start? How did I end up with this frozen heart? Bringing destruction to the stage Caught in a war that I was never meant to wage
THE LYRICS ARE SO GOOD ;;; i really love how some broadway interpretations expand on the source material
and yeah you're right đ¤§đ¤§đ¤§â yuusha would try to hide and escape, especially as she overblots bc she would try to avoid hurting people (and like elsa, it'd only hurt others more trying to escape bc of probably how she leaves destruction in her wake trying to make others stay away from her đ)
(this is a small tangent but i remember thinking about an overblot kalim and i imagine him to be similar, like he would not hurt anyone intentionally in his overblot.)
anyways so the way it would go is that i imagine her friends got fatally injured either because a) she feels that sheâs too âuselessâ without magic to help and wasnât able to do anything OR b) her attempts at helping to try and prove that she can help without magic made everything worse.
and then she just goes into a guilty spiral then boom â overblot.
ALSO in the song, the way elsa briefly contemplated taking her own life but then realizing thereâs no guarantee that would solve anything hnghgh (<- another unintentional parallel to my yuusha lore because thatâs actually how she ended up in twst except she did NOT have the latter realization)
thereâs this âyuu is deadâ theory iâm just using and that the black carriage actually just caught yuushaâs soul after she took her own life from all the burden.
also some bonus angst context for that violin post :3
yuusha back in her homeworld is raised and known to be a gifted musician. people can feel the life and soul in her music but when people interact with her, they are usually met with an ice-cold (heh) personality.
the dead family member was the one who taught her music and the only one who was kind to her.
thereâs always an expectation from her family to perform well and to keep up appearances as to not be a humiliation since anything she does can reflect on her entire family. (also hi, slight yuusha/jamil parallels maybe???)
the way she presents herself also stemmed from an incident as a child when she went apeshit on another kid bc she was defending a friend.
so from then on she was taught taught to conceal donât feel those emotions â which just unfortunately extended to any positive ones, not just negative ones like rage.
so when she is brought to twst, thereâs no memory of her being forced to hold back her emotions so sheâs just unapologetically affectionate and open with everyone bc thatâs how she really is.
but every now and then, memories of her breaking down haunt her in her dreams or as subtle reminders in the waking world.
then yuusha just goes on her day like she just wasn't reminded of her past.
(unnecessarily tragic lore my beloved, but anywayâ)
another extremely brief tangent and bonus -> the two songs i had on loop while drawing pre-twst yuusha
lindsey stirling my beloved i love her music
the songs are such a vibe
her instrumentals in âlose you nowâ especially makes me feel some sort of way đ
#AHH THIS IS /SO/ LONG#THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN IM GIVEN THE CHANCE TO RAMBLE#but thank you for the ask dio!! đ¤§đ¤§#it makes me so happy to hear you like yuusha đđđ#this also took a bit because i needed to like#actually turn all these thoughts into actual coherent words#and for them to actually. make sense together.#idk im proofreading this myself during the gamer hours of midnight hfdjslkf#i sure /hope/ they do make sense for the most part because this is pure massive brain vomit#[â⌠chatting#-⧠my art#-⧠oc rambles#(đ) yuusha tala#pretwstđ#-âŚâ]#at this point too iâm sticking to the twst elsa concept#it just felt weird admitting it bc i have a history with this movie and its fandom in general#kids would ask you âwhos your favorite disney princess it cant be elsaâ bc everyone would pick her so i'd have to pick another </3#she was too famous and therefore too obvious and basic#not to mention âlet it goâ was EVERYWHERE and it did become annoying at one point đ#the fandom around frozen back then was v questionable too ngl and i was also in that hole for a bit so it's just /ack/#but rewatching the movie i realize how elsa kinda speaks to me hgjkdsjfaljsd#i could lowkey highkey rant more about her but anyways#imma be an elsa defender and apologist for as long as i am able

okay so I might having a moment with this prosecutor oc in my head. like yeah I can pretty much call her an oc, I just need to draw her. also the attorney is also slowly forming in my mind, their stories. would it be cool if I uh. Showed them w art when I drew them? Idk it feels weird posting on main cuz no one really looks at it there anyways (not a lot of traffic on my main) Art reminds me, the Gramarye troupe really inspired me because like. I've changed 2 character designs I've had to be more magician like cuz I realised how much more it fit them (a 3rd one also pending that I've yet to draw but I need to get myself to do that first)
As a non oc aside, I've been thinking about the Klavier investigations game. Where like, basically Edgeworth would be looking over finds of cases to see how fair they are but since he's so busy, he would send out trusted prosecutors (Klavier being one of them) to reinvestigate scenes and talk to witnesses to see if the initial investigation was actually correct. And like, Klavier being like, Idk I see the idea of him not wanting to investigate alone and inviting only Apollo at first but then later on Athena would join too, maybe with Apollo being sometimes absent for whatever reasons, many possibilities. Like I'd love to see Athena and Klavier working together too I think it would make for interesting stuff. Maybe Simon could make some appearances too, being another trusted prosecutor Edgeworth would trust to thoroughly investigate. Also Franziska if she feels like it..... we haven't seen her in a long while.
ace attorney OCs? HELL YEAH It's absolutely cool of you to show your art, and honestly highly encouraged!! And y'know me, I would love to see it. Hell, if you ever post it, I'll repost it on my main :) Well, not only a reminder for you but for everyone else too: do art for yourself first, for your own enjoyment!!
also magician-based? đ (<- really loves magic stuff)
anyway KLAV INVESIGATIONS YIPPEE!! It would make so much sense for Miles to go back in old cases and see if any corruption was involved. *sips tea* ah yes, the Dark Age of the Law (TM). And yes, let Miles do another "That Man" line smh /aff. I'm sure Klavier would love an investigation partner (bc Ema would usually be there) and wouldn't y'know it, there's Apollo :) Some small cameos of Trucy and Simon would be so dope to have!! WE COULD HAVE GUMSHOE CAMEO. But dude, Klavier and Athena team-up? I want to see that frfr! Like I already know some bonding/emotional moments between Apollo and Klavier but there could also be some with Athena bc y'know the therapy thing. But also family related stuff.
also FRANNY BRING MY GIRL BACK đ "what for?" uh. interpol stuff yeah yeah totally :) I'll take a cameo if I have to. But if Klav and Franziska interact, I would die happy
thanks for the ask, nicc!

A couple of replies! Starting with the one related to our Jamil art from yesterday hehehe.
Anonymous asked:
Scarabia n.1 boyfailure! You made him look so cool!!!!!!! I tend to rag on this design quite a bit, but I think Jamil's OB has become my favorite exactly because to me it's almost equally ridiculous and awesome. With the kind of life he has, he deserves to act a bit silly (violently attacking people).
Also I can't stop thinking about the jp fandom calling his outfit "ecchi". Honestly, I really can't blame them... I like the legs...
Yessss him!!! Thank you so much, Anon â¤ď¸ Ah Jamil and his silly emotional self⌠laughing maniacally kicking people around lol
He really is ecchi, the legs are amazing. While it took us 4 days to finish this one and Iâm very satisfied with it, a part of me wishes we drew his legs too, they are absolutely criminal.
Overblots are such a delight and a pain to draw at the same time. Iâm very happy we finished Jamil⌠itâs been a year since our last OB boyâŚ
irregardlessly-tish asked:
The headcanon about Ortho and Mira got me thinking about Ortho being rivals with a house Alexa and similar things. Ortho hating on commercial use AIs being all grumpy "you're giving the rest of us a bad name! >:["
(this is related to this post)
Omg YES Ortho and his surprisingly serious beef with all these AIs!! He is MUCH BETTER THAN ANY OF THEM, right? >:( !!!!

So I saw that in a past ask that only two guys in Idiaâs shippings is actually interested in becoming serious with him. How does Lilia see him then? As a friend with benefits? And is Idia aware of this or does he think they could become an actual thing?
The thing is, I donât think Lilia is interested in having actual committed relationship with anyone at this point. I donât know if he ever did (well, with one particular exception in his youth), but now he pretty much lives in the moment and enjoys human connections that happen to him right here and right now. Idia is pretty young, so Lilia wouldnât want him to get too attached. While Idia isnât a fae and his lifespan is much shorter than Liliaâs, Lilia is pretty old and yeeeeaah actually dating him would be rather cruel. I also think that Lilia probably considers himself not really... worthy of such a dedication? Idia is young and is going to change someone for serious relationships, and Lilia doesnât see himself as someone who Idia would actually be in love with. Lilia doesnât know how much he means to people around him, and Idia is no exception. So this approach would actually hurt Idia more in the end.
But another thing is, Lilia also hates having these conversations, so he isnât going to have one lol To him heâs just having fun with Idia as long as itâs fun for them to be around each other. And since Idia is pretty young, Lilia also naively believes that whenever they stop spending time together, Idia will get over it. So yeah in a way he is still being cruel, albeit unintentionally.
Idia doesnât know what their relationship is. He is a pessimist, and he just knows that something is unavoidably going to go wrong at some point, but he is also in love and really doesnât want it to end. He probably tries not to overthink it to avoid getting too hurt and disappointed, but deep inside he would love to spend time with Lilia forever.
This reply ended up being not so funny, Iâm sorryâ

Say, a quick question about fem Kalim, since she is the heiress of her family, would she be subjected to the same marriage law as Princess Jasmine where she has to marry by the time she turns eighteen?
Huh! đ¤ Good question, I havenât thought about it.
Itâs a bit tricky because the Asims arenât really royalty + Jasmine was the only daughter and Kalim has 30+ siblingsâŚÂ but for the sake of some juicy drama it could still be the case (being forced to marry during your 3rd year of college, yikes).
I guess itâll depend on the scenario weâre going to go for any specific post or comic.
Anonymous asked:
hey saw you're getting into Treyvil! I read a really adorable fic on AO3 called Adequately Inadequate. I think the author was something like FabFoxFics or something like that.
Thank you for your recommendation, Anon! â¤ď¸
While I donât really read fanfics, Iâll still post it in case anyone is interested. Maybe Iâll check it out tooâŚ

[Soulmate Demons AU old arts / secret board]
Yes, we had drawings that we decided not to publish openly but to keep between ourselves, out of respect for our mutual friend who does not like this ship. ....If to think so, itâs kinda selfish, depriving people of such drawings by declaring and reminding under each similar art how much you donât like it and putting pressure telling about being traumatized by this ship.. I no longer intend to hide it just for the sake of one person who, in the end, never was there for me after all their words and promises. If you happen to see this.. that's your problem, sorry.
This is another art related to Dark or Evil Soul, and believe me, this is the peak of what these two are capable of in relation to each other in terms of vulgarity. Probably because I can't imagine anything more dirty between them.. and I don't want to.
It was someone's bad joke (mine. Me and Corrupt didnât get along very well back then, and I could afford such a prank). I'm still a little ashamed of it. Soul too, by the way. He freed him pretty quickly haha. What about Corrupt? He was quiet for a long time after that..
This is something very unfinished, but it's a whole story. WIP, if you call it.. Based on the fact that BF dislikes Corrupt very much, due to the fact that he himself was with Soul before, and due to the fact that he completely distrusts Corrupt, sees him only as a monster, and constantly expects some kind of meanness from him, saying that Corrupt just got in his way into Soul's trust and manipulates his mind. I still want to finish this even though quite a long time has passed. This is one of the things I don't want to leave unfinished, but there's a lot of work there. One way or another, as in the case of the âcomicsâ about the Monster, this will be a separate post along with all the text that comes with it. In the worst case, it will only be text rewritten into a more detailed fanfic.
I think you have already noticed that I figure in moments like this.. donât worry, Corurpt took revenge on me for such antics when he had such an opportunity. Well, BF and Corrupt more or less got along by that time too. It was a punishment, and thatâs what we were roleplayed, I donât remember how it started, itâs just that someone like this kind of thing. I wonder what it feels like to be forcefully licked....
*sigh* ...This was originally going to be worn by Soul, but Corrupt ended up being the victim instead. Soul himself did not mind participating in this. Strange affair.. This is based on what my friend originally came up with, portraying it as if it were my idea (as if!). I'm not usually into putting guys in dresses, but I have nothing against it, I just don't understand it a little. It wasn't such a problem for me to drew it, but Corrupt hates this memory very much..
I ended it when we stopped communicating. He's still following this board, but he probably didn't even notice it. Or pretended that I no longer existed, I donât know.. Another shot from our roleplay. They fbeing forced to kiss due to the fact that both were under the control of voodoo dolls. Did someone (it was one of âourâ corrupted OC, who at that time lived with them) just decide to ship them too aggressively? Funny, but weird. Going through these drawings, I experience what you people call âcringe,â but not to a strong enough degree. Just.. back then I didnât think about what it looked like, because I just wanted to please someone I considered my good friend. Now.. this isn't even something I would normally draw. Well.. that's all for now. Not like anyone was waiting this shit.

Old art #12: Fate/Once Upon a Time

Some more ancient history. I used to be obsessed with Fate/Stay Night and could not swallow the ending of the Fate route of the visual novel/2006 anime when I was in high school, so obviously I drew several hundred pages of fan comic to fix it. I used to post it on DeviantArt, but life got in the way back then, so I left it in like chapter 3. (Yes it took like a hundred pages per chapter because I'm me). And I had something like 52 chapters planned, I think. I still pretty much remember the story, so I've been considering reposting the pages somewhere with a summary of how it would have gone, to give closure to people who loved it back then, even though it's very late, and it's pretty unlikely anyone from that time would stumble across it anymore.

At least I had been able to draw and post the whole reason why I began to make the comic, by the end of chapter 1, so I wasn't completely torn about it when I wasn't able to continue. Anyway... in case anyone was curious, this is kind of where I come from. This was my start in fan works. It was a fix-it comic that consumed my life for a while. (Two years, I think.) I could not stop, I was drawing every minute I could. I remember carrying a folder with me everywhere, not only was I drawing on breaks at school and secretly in class, literally even during my folk dance groups' training camp I was already in some corner drawing if we had a five-minute break, same at backstage while someone was braiding my hair for a performance. I could not waste a minute. (My days were full already.)

This was the first long story of mine that had readers I didn't know, who left comments and begged for me to continue. That was really something. I bet that really marks a turning point for a lot of storytellers. I had had ideas for fan works before, but I had always resisted because it "isn't original". Fate/Stay Night was the first time my need to create was too strong, it made me throw that philosophy out the window for a while. (I'm glad it did, obviously, even though part of the reason I quit was because I decided I had to focus on my original fiction at the time.)

My English was still not great, and I had even more problems with anatomy than I do now, but this project definitely made me develop both of those skills a lot. It's always the uncontrollable need to create something that makes me get better at things, because there's just no other way to accomplish what I want than to acquire the skills I need for it, and my brain just doesn't accept not succeeding. If it weren't for this fan comic, I probably wouldn't have done a lot of things I have since then. So I feel like I owe a lot to Fate, and I have many fond memories of this project.

Obviously, I also got mansplained a lot, since it was a pretty male dominant fandom. Guys who hadn't even bothered to read my story yet came to me like "Uuuuh do you have a clue how Fate works, I bet you don't so let me go on paragraphs of monologue" of things that I of course knew just as well as them. Or telling me that my story wasn't even possible because X, Y and Z problems would need to be solved before there could even be another Grail War as the Grail was destroyed... like, really? You thought I didn't think of that? You didn't even consider that maybe I actually have a brain and came up with entirely new concepts that don't exist in canon? (Not to mention, a gigantic franchise with multiple contradictory routes for the same story is a really stupid place to start telling people what is or isn't possible, geez. Why so small-minded?)
Or they were just dismissing me because my story "looked like a shojo manga". (Lol, I know, and that's not an accident. That's what's so great about it, actually. When you combine the high stakes and suspense of shonen with the aesthetic and emotional expression of shojo, how can you lose? When you combine conventions from two different sources, you'll always end up with something that doesn't exist in either of them. A union, a synthesis, is more than the sum of its parts. That's my philosophy, anyway...)

And appearances can be deceiving. Once these guys actually read my story, they told me I was "so good at creating suspense!!!!" and the emotional catharsis of a particular scene had them writing to me that I made them cry. Hah. In your face. (I certainly thought that, even if I had too much manners to tell them.) Don't you just love changing people's minds?

Anyway, looking back at this more than a decade old thing made me quite emotional.
Shiro x Saber forever. đđđ

8 for the weirdly specific art ask game, please!
(Ask game)
8. What's an old project idea that you've lost interest in
The questions are specifically about drawing, so I'll stick to that. Generally, I'm more likely to finish a project slower/later than intended than to give up on it, but when it comes to drawings... It probably happens.
(Note that I have ideas all the time. I'll stick to the stuff that was the most likely to get done.)
It might be largely ideas for comics? I just don't have the skill or energy to make satisfying comics, even though it's a medium I like. Initially, the "Despair" AU to my fiction @murderfabrication, Fabricated Despair, was going to be a series of comics. After a long while, I realised I was never going to do it, and switched it to text as well. (I don't regret it at all. It's a fun format to write, whereas making a comic would have probably resulted in more work than enjoyment for me!)
Since my characters Akiro and Jan are fairly popular among the people who do know my OCs, I oftentimes think it would be cute and might be well received to make short comics about them. I don't know where the hell it went, but I'd drawn a first panel for a comic showing something that happened to Jan as a kid (something that can't possibly be shown in Murder Fabrication), and then never felt able to finish it. Another example was this comic draft, for a silly joke about Akiro playing TGAA and getting attached to a character who looks like Jan (and is a pathetic little meow meow).
I'd even drawn the hands...
I think the joke to what would have been the first "arc" was that when you look at Jan up-close, he looks less "cool" and more "cute". I also remember turning this shot of Jan looking confused in the middle of my storyboard into a Discord emote.........
There are probably a lot more comic ideas I've had, maybe even storyboarded on a post-it note, but then never made a reality. Looking at my Jan sketches (not shown), I feel like I either struggle with trying to be efficient or just get too in my head, because I drew him way too stiff and drew his proportions poorly - I can tend to draw stiff characters, but proportions I usually nail.
In any case, it was a while back and I've definitely lost interest in that specific silly comic.
Another example I could bring up is that I was initially planning to make Danganronpa-style splash art for every Murder Fabrication character, but never did it. I still plan to make solo illustrations in my style, but it might take a very long time. It's no longer a priority! But in any case, I'm glad I decided not to stick to the Danganronpa style, since I don't enjoy drawing it.
Thanks for the ask!
#ofc this includes fanart if you just look at my many unfinished .psd files as a reference for ''project ideas''#the yappeeerrrrrr#ask#ask game#adding as a note: isabella and ciel are the only charas i did splash art for. and isabella's i redrew years later in my style#i'm actually very proud of that art

Forays Into Fandom
I felt it would be appropriate for one of my first posts on Tumblr to be about fandoms, and Iâve had this bouncing around in my head for a little while, so I wanted to share it. Basically, itâs my timeline of discovering fandoms and hyperfixations on media as well as some thoughts on my experiences with fandom recently. Also, heads up, itâs pretty long XD
One day, when I was 8 years old, I was at over at my best friendâs house and found a book with an orange cat on the front of it. I was intrigued, and I asked to borrow it. From the very first page, I was captivated.
Thus, I was introduced to my first real fandom: Warriors (aka Warrior cats).
And the rest is history.
Over the years since then, Iâve had the joy of discovering many more fandoms. I was in many fandoms before I knew what the term was, and I wrote fanfiction and drew fan art before I was aware that those were things other people did.
Around the time I first found Warriors, I started discovering more fandoms, most of which were book-based and of the fantasy fiction genre. This kicked off what one might call my âfantasy phase,â which I would say is still technically going. Back when it started, however, it was marked by devouring any and all (mostly) age-appropriate fantasy books. As I said, I donât think my fantasy phase ever stopped. But that time of my life was when my love for all things magical and mythical came alive. My tweens brought more fandoms, including bigger/more well-known fandoms like Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and Avatar: The Last Airbender, as well as smaller fandoms like the Books of Beginning, the Land of Stories series, and Michael Vey.
The next major milestone in my fandom life came when I started watching the TV show Once Upon A Time. OUAT was the first fandom TV show I ever seriously watched, and it introduced me to my first OTP: Captainswan. I donât think I have ever fangirled harder over a fictional couple nor shipped characters more intensely. I literally put their wedding anniversary (the date their wedding episode aired, that is) on my Google Calendar: May 7th, 2017. I love Once Upon A Time so much; I love how hopeful it is, I love the fantasy elements, and I love the characters and their relationships.
Then, my Tolkien hyperfixation started when I went to go see The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in theater. It was my first Tolkien movie, and although people often criticize The Hobbit movies (myself among them), I will always be grateful for that film. It drew me into Middle-Earth and kept me spellbound throughout the entire movie. I had read The Hobbit when I was younger, for a book club, so I was generally familiar with the story: I knew Bilbo and the dwarves journeyed to Erebor to take back the mountain from the dragon Smaug. Despite the changes in storyline that they made for the movie, I was able to follow along enough to enjoy it. This led me to watch the other Hobbit movies and some behind-the-scenes/making of videos.
Right around the time I started watching Once Upon a Time and saw The Battle of the Five Armies, my mom started letting me use her Pinterest account (and then shortly thereafter, she let me create my own). Pinterest was my gateway into social media, and more importantly in this case, fandom media. I knew Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook existed, but I didnât know of Tumblr until Pinterest. I was surprised and delighted to find that people posted online about books, TV shows, and movies that I enjoyed. Tumblr posts on Pinterests were how I learned of the term âfandomâ in the first place. They were how I learned of the âgolden age of Tumblr,â of SuperWhoLock, of iconic Tumblr posts (e.g., none pizza with left beef), and of fandom overall.
This marked another turn: I stumbled across a piece of fanfiction. And I was enthralled. Most of my reading was Hobbit and Captainswan fanfics. However, I felt quite guilty for reading it, because my parents had told me that I shouldnât browse any websites they hadnât approved first. I didnât ask them because I was scared they would say no, since they didnât know what it was. So although I enjoyed reading fanfiction, I felt like I had to hide it from my family. Finally, after two weeks of summer camp and vacation where I didnât have access to any electronic devices that I could read fanfiction on, the habit was broken, and I stopped reading fanfiction. However, I dreamed that perhaps one day, I could admit what I had done to my parents and I could read fanfiction again. (More on this later.)
Because I needed something to fill the gap that fanfiction left, I decided to dive into Tolkienâs stories. I read Lord of the Rings and then took on The Silmarillion. Those took me into high school, along with Marvel moviesâI started watching those with some of my friends, and Marvel was one of my top hyperfixations for quite a while. I also discovered a few other fandoms in high school that I really enjoyed: two of the more well-known ones would be Fablehaven and The Selection (the latter was my first taste of a romance-focused series). I was still an avid Once Upon a Time fan, though my hyperfixation on it waned when season 7 aired (I didnât watch past the first couple of episodes because the majority of the main cast was gone and the overall story was different).
In late high school, after Once Upon a Time had finally ended and my Marvel hyperfixation started dying down, I began watching Doctor Who. I had always thought the show sounded interesting, but it wasnât until a friend of mine insisted I sit down and watch the first couple episodes with her that I decided I wanted to watch it. (I have never, ever watched a show for which I have gotten SO many spoilers. Never. Most of that was definitely my own fault, because I had seen lots of SuperWhoLock content on Pinterest and I wasnât super careful about avoiding spoilers once I started watching the show, but occasionally I would just run into something on social media or a friend would tell me something. I still havenât fully caught up on the show, lol.)
When I started college, I found a roommate who, among the many amazing things about her, shared a love of fandoms with me. We had a lot of big fandoms in common, but also some smaller or less-known ones too. Because of this, we have had tons of discussions about different fandoms, watched TV shows and movies together, and freaked out about new announcements concerning fandoms. To this day we still do those things; weâve been sending each other stuff about the upcoming Percy Jackson TV series, and we watched the first two Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials together.
Another turning point came when I discovered the band Greta Van Fleet in 2021. Before this, I had enjoyed different bands, but I had never really found a favorite band, so to speak: one where I liked all the songs, where I knew all the membersâ names, where I kept up to date with their tours, where I watched interviews with the band, where I knew lots of background info about the band, etc. Most times, I heard a few songs from a band and went âTheyâre cool, but Iâm not hooked.â This time was different. I really liked their first song I heard, Talk On the Street, so I decided to check them out. I listened to their songs and thought, wow. Their songs match my taste in music SO well! I was like âYES, Iâve found a band that plays the exact kind of music I like to hear!â. Another reason I liked the band was that the songs were not all about drinking, drugs, and sex. Most of them were about other, more philosophical things, without any loss of rock ân roll. This, I would say, is really where music and fandom collided for me. A band fandom (âbanddomâ?) definitely feels different than a media/fiction-focused fandom, because these are real people, and as such, Iâve drawn different boundaries in terms of how I engage with it. My hyperfixation on Greta Van Fleet has calmed down a bit, but they still have a very special place in my heart.
My newest fandoms are Inkheart and Shadow & Bone/Six of Crows, which I discovered in 2022. Inkheart was one of the books that had been on my to-read list for forever, and I finally decided to read it. I absolutely loved it (and the sequels); the style really took me back to the start of my âfantasy phaseâ when I was younger. As for Shadow and Bone, one of my friends persuaded me to watch it, and one night when I didnât have any schoolwork, I decided to watch a few episodes. After the third episode, I was invested enough that I had to finish the first season, and then I read the books before the next season came out. I hadnât realized before what a large fandom the Six of Crows books had, but upon reading the books, I immediately understood whyâthe character arcs and relationships are so compelling, and the setting and plot arenât what I would expect of the typical fantasy world in fiction. (Interestingly, Inkheart and Shadow & Bone/Six of Crows are the first two fandoms I have published fanfic for!)
Sometime during college, I started reading fanfiction again on and off. And I found myself comfortable with admitting to my parents/family that I used to read fanfiction, and that I read it now. I havenât discussed it with them further, and still donât really talk about it much (though sometimes I'll tell my sister about fics Iâm reading). January 2023 saw me getting back into reading Tolkien fanfiction, especially Tolkien fanfiction. I found some of the old fanfics I had read during my first fanfiction era, and I felt like I was a young teenager again, reading the stories I had read back then. I reached out to one of the authors, and it gave me so much joy to tell this person, âHey. I couldnât tell you back then, but I read your stories years ago and theyâre some of my favorite stories. Thank you.â Iâve kept reading Tolkien fanfiction since then, and weirdly enough, it prompted me to read The Silmarillion again (it was my third time through, and it was the easiest time Iâve had reading it by far). Iâve been in the grip of the Tolkien fandom all year, and Iâm planning on sharing a âFanfiction Wrappedâ soon (well, itâs going to be a fic rec list, but now Iâm thinking of doing a real Fanfiction WrappedâŚlol) for my favorite Tolkien fics Iâve read this year, as well as the handful of fics for other fandoms I discovered in 2023. Iâve found so many great stories and wonderful authors this year, and I want other people to get to experience the joy of new stories and authors too. Plus I love finding fanfic rec lists, so I thought it would be fun to do a rec list of my own.
For so long, I didnât realize how much of a community aspect there is to fandomâand I think thatâs because my parents kept me safe from the internet. I understand that and I will always be grateful that they kept me protected from really nasty, dangerous things that are present on the internet. I donât feel any resentment towards my parents for that whatsoever. But now, as an adult in my early 20s, Iâve discovered that I can make my own choices about the community side of fandom and how much I choose to participate in it. Itâs still something Iâm pretty tentative about, at least when it comes to posting publicly; Iâm very aware that anything that is put on the internet may very well be there forever. Public Discord servers feel a bit more private, because you have to join them to see the conversations taking place there, but theyâre still public. Especially at this point in time, internet safety and privacy is quite important. However, you can still have fun while being safe, so thatâs what Iâm hoping to do. Iâve created this blog, Iâve joined some public Discord servers for fandoms, and Iâve even posted fanfiction. I have no idea how much further Iâll go into the online world of fandoms and fandom communityâor just into the world of internet interaction and posting in generalâbut Iâm interested in seeing where the journey will take me.
And who knows, maybe thereâs a kid (or teen, or young adult) out there like me, who is tentatively taking their first steps into fandom and figuring out what this is all about. If thatâs you, hello! And if not, hello to you too!
At the start of the year, I discovered the song âStill Into Youâ by Paramore through a YouTube compilation of Hobbit TikToks. (Yes, I know, Iâm literally 10 years late to the game on that song, lol.) But it made me think of all my fandoms that Iâve had hyperfixations on and that come up now and again, like the Tolkien fandom.
So, to my fandoms: after all this time, Iâm still into you :)

Eeee Shauni I always look forward to your commentary! Honestly, you pick up things that I wasn't even consciously aware of, but are still somehow There and do reflect how I view the character/s in some way!
(Caution: Extensive rambling about badgers ahead)
The poses were honestly something I didn't put a lot of thought into, I just kind of drew what came naturally for each of them, but your analysis absolutely tracks with how I see them. Whenua's had a bit of a hard life in canon and virtually all of these AUs for one reason or another, but in KNPS his day job at least has some moments of peace where he can just putter around in the dark reshelving books and cataloguing books and whatnot. There's still the possibility of a Makuta attack, so he doesn't entirely let down his guard, but at the same time he's not braced for an attack and ready to run or fight during every waking moment of every day. I hadn't thought about what his closed/open stance say about him, but that absolutely tracks with how I view his character development.
In KNPS, Toa's eyes glow when they use their elemental or secondary ("mask" but not mask) powers. While Whenua's not actively using his powers here, the aqua-green colour kind of alludes to that. As a werebeast, he doesn't have access to his powers so that green colour doesn't show up there.
Ok, that's a lie. I actually just couldn't find a place for it that made sense in that image, but I sounded really clever for a moment there so I'm going to claim it was my subconscious doing A Thing and it just took the rest of my brain a little while to catch up.
I did consider giving werebeast Whenua a little green bowtie or something (his attempt at feeling somewhat like himself and looking a bit more respectable), but I've tried drawing that before and reached some unexpected complications. Depending on how stylized/realistic I draw him, a bowtie plus the suspenders can either make him look too goofy and cartoony or... if I make him too humanoid looking... what you get is, um, furry Magic Mike, basically. Sir that is a stripper outfit. Put a fucking shirt on that beast.
(Fly? I didn't intentionally draw one, but there might be a few unintended coloured specks in the image courtesy of my puppy Kevin chewing up my stylus, which hasn't quite worked the same since and keeps making unwanted dots and marks. I tried to clean them all up before posting, but I may have missed a few somewhere, My laptop being a bit old and crappy and not quite showing colours properly does not help.)
He is inherently going to look a little goofy as a werebeast with his suspenders and broken glasses, and he may or may not intentionally be going for a bit of a Beatrix Potter cottagecore critter vibe here, but... he's also the size of a small black bear, with long claws and sharp teeth and predator instincts, and woe betide any being who forgets that. In fact, having the instincts of a small animal (as opposed to a large apex predator) probably makes him potentially more dangerous, since he doesn't have the instinctive confidence of being top of the food chain, and is more likely to perceive other beings as a potential threat and react preemptively to that. The consequences of Whenua having a distorted perception of his own size and vulnerability could be potentially funny, but could also have serious consequences for anyone that triggers his fight or flight response.
The alternate werebeast expressions came about because the mouth was giving me a lot of grief in getting the expression right for the main image and I wanted to get a handle on how his face actually worked. I wanted to convey some humanlike emotion (in this case, annoyance) without cartoonifying the face too much. Avoiding stuff like this, basically:

So in a lot of disney and disneyesque art (and by extension, a lot of furry art), the animal's mouth doesn't move from the actual jaw hinge, they bring the movement to the end of the snout to make it move in a more humanlike way. There's nothing wrong with this kind of stylization, of course, but it wasn't what I was going for here and I wanted the mouth to work somewhat like an actual badger's (not sure if I entirely succeeded, but I think I'm getting there). The challenge for the main picture was showing just enough fang to remind you that this guy could mess you up if he wanted to, while still maintaining a fairly Whenua-esque expression and not making him look like a snarling mindless beast.
I did try drawing a smile. Thing is, smiling is fairly rare in nature. For most mammals, baring one's teeth is a sign of aggression. Canines, dolphins and some mustelids can make expressions we perceive as a smile, but searching for "badger smile" gives results like this...

Which is unfortunate for Whenua, since it can make him look frightening even when he's trying to be friendly!
For contrast, I did a content/peaceful expression and an actual deliberate snarl as well. I think the latter looks fairly terrifying and would make a certain werewolf think twice before trying to grab him by the throat again. Still, I could have pushed it even further if I'd wanted to...

Anatomically, his face is a little different from a real badger's. He has a higher forehead to imply there's still a somewhat humanish brain in there, and more of a chin. His ear placement hasn't changed much so he can still wear his modified glasses, though he did have to widen them across the bridge. Though looking at it now, I kind of want to tweak the stripe pattern a little to give him more black markings around the muzzle and a narrower nose stripe, which seems to be a more common colour morph.
Some Whenuas from various fan Human and human-adjacent AUs!
The first image features three versions of Whenua from @magicalgirlmascot's Kini Nui Public School AU, the second is my Toa Metru Fantasy AU /DnD AU and @bionicle-ramblings' fairy tale AU, third is Professor Whenua from my Pokemon AU idea.
Kind of an interesting exercise in bringing out different aspects of a character that relate to his canon self in different ways, a bit like refracting them through a prism. (Also an exercise in silly hair lore)
I've put a few notes in the images but as always, there are a lot of small character details so I'm curious to see what people pick up on.
Also, all of them together for size comparison:
#there's probably more i could say about the various versions if anyone's curious but i'll leave it there for now#knps au

Case File: Poe - Devlog 1:Â Planning, Concept, and Art Style!
I posted my first devlog for Case File: Poe on my site, but Iâll post it here too! It's about the art planning and concept progress so far :)
It's a little long but keep reading below to read more!Â
Whenever I come up with an idea for a new game or comic, I usually always like to start with the characters first. However, for Case File: Poe, the premise came to me first while I was working on my previous game, Dolchio. With the rough plot in mind, I sketched out some character designs and realized that I didnât like them or feel attached to them at all lol.
So I thought I'd use some old character designs and find a way to stick them into this new game! So thatâs how three of the four main cast members were added to the game (Poe, Rokio, and Morg). With the characters decided, I could move on to writing and conceptualizing how the game would look and play; Without the characters and loose plot, itâs really difficult for me to write or do anything else.

Now that the characters are out of the way, itâs time to write! Which Iâm gonna talk about in another devlog because writing this story is my poor little brain work harder than it ever has in yearsâŚ!! I thought Hansel had a complicated story, but this one is a whole different beast and Iâm honestly having some trouble staying organized. But Iâm hoping itâll pay off in the end! No worries though, Iâd say the writing is about 70% complete as of posting this devlog, and I started back in February 2022! :] Hereâs a blurry image of one of the many several writing/outlining/planning pages Iâve done hehe (blurred for no spoilers!)

Moving on, now I could start drawing. I donât like drawing until I have a good chunk of the writing done because I donât want to have wasted some time drawing something and then end up scrapping it if I decide to change the game around later. I originally had planned for Case File: Poe to be a top-down RPG, like Hansel or other standard RPG make games. So I drew a few character sprites for the game and played around with different styles. But I wanted the game window size to be larger, and forcing full screen on the game would make it look weird if I used small pixel art. So I tried making bigger sprites, or even upscaling them. Long story short, I had to scrap the RPG style and go for something else.

I knew that because of the nature of the game, a strict sidescroller like the style of Dolchio wouldnât work the best because I want the player to be able to explore the map. While the sidescrolling style would allow for some exploration, it was more suited for Dolchioâs linear storytelling where exploration wasnât as integral to beating the game. Thatâs not the case for this game, as it is about a mystery. Exploring and gathering evidence is the most important part! So I had to go all the way back to the drawing board and play some other games to find some inspiration. And so I did find some gameplay inspiration from games such as Ace Attorney, Professor Layton, Shin Megami Tensei, Danganronpa, Your Turn to Die, Virtueâs Last Reward, and 13 Sentinels.
With RPG Maker MVâs clicking/Mouse support, I figured out what I had to do! Like a clicking adventure game, I was going to have to make a game where the player can explore the whole environment by directly interacting with it and its characters. With that in mind, I started creating concept art and sketching out some of the art for the game!
So with plot, gameplay ideas, characters, and concepts are out of the way for now, I could move on to thinking about the general art aesthetic that Iâd like: I want Case File: Poe to look good. Like, really REALLY good and Iâm afraid that my art skills arenât at that level yet. I donât it to look or feel like an RPG maker game. So why not just use another game engine?? Iâve made some stuff using Game Maker Studio and Iâm confident with it and I could use that but⌠I like using RPG maker!! Itâs fun hehe >:]
Regarding the art, it just means that I have to practice some more and actually take my time on it. Seriously, I usually donât have the patience to take my time drawing and so I like to rush and finish all my pieces under an hour. Itâs a bad habit, I know!! Which is why Iâm forcing myself to sit down and not rush through the art, and to make myself polish the artwork as much as I can! And so, yesterday I completed a cutscene CG test where I took all of the time I needed to get an idea of how much time I would need to set aside for the art of the game. This CG took me a little over 3 hours instead.
And Iâm definitely happy with the way it came out!! Yes! The game is coming together in my head! Next, I have to figure out the interface, world map, other graphic design stuff but Iâll leave those for later. My priority now is to finish writing the game and start the script. After that, I can go ham on the art and theeennnn start the programming!
I know this was a long read, but thanks for reading through it! Hopefully I can get these devlogs up regularly that way I can make myself consistently work on the game. :]

thanks for tagging me @sunshineinbetween! :D
1. Why did you choose your url?
Mostly just wanted a change of pace from my old one! (Also my biological & abusive father was stalking my old url so.) But basically uhhhh i love wandering around in the middle of nowhere like a lost child and also corvids <3
2. Any side blogs?
Quite a bit actually! None of them are super active anymore because I stopped caring about social media. Only one that's still kinda used is @softsayings which is a joint blog between rickshaww and I.
3. How long have you been on tumblr?
...I wanna say 2017??? Is when I made my first account? I abandoned it after a couple of months and never picked it up again (it was a kin blog, surprising probably no one) and I made this one in,,, March 2018 according to the archive. So when I was about 16.
4. Do you have a queue tag?
I do not and the only thing I put in my queue is the anthropocene sea foam post whenever someone reminds me about it <3
5. Why did you start your blog in the first place?
This blog originally was a witchcraft blog. I. don't think that's the case anymore lmao.
6. Why did you choose your icon/pfp?
@rickshaww my beloved drew us for my birthday present and I wanted to show it off :3
7. Why did you choose your header?
Cool and sexy abandoned building we found during a roadtrip and one wall looked like album art!! (Also think it's especially cool how that building had the lyrics from the Garages' Deicide written on the wall and how I'd absolutely never even think about doing something like that.)
8. Whatâs your post with the most notes?
On this blog, it is, and I quote, "AAAAAAAA DISCIPLINE FUCKS HARDCORE" which 30 whole people seemed to like and I pray my blog never gets any bigger because if it gets like my old aesthetic blog I will just nuke this one and start over.
9. How many mutuals do you have?
No clue! I think I'm mutuals with most of the ppl I follow/that I regularly see on my dash though.
10. How many followers do you have?
109!! And I never want to get above 200.
11. How many people do you follow?
201! Also want to stay pretty low,,, too many and it gets overwhelming.

uhhhhhh I cannot recall. Probably? Do the anthropocene spam posts count??
13. How often do you use tumblr each day?
Oof.
14. Did you have a fight/argument with another blog once?
Uhhhh,,,, no...??? I don't think so, at least not a real one.
15. How do you feel about âyou need to reblog thisâ posts?
You put too many of those on my dashboard and it's an instant unfollow babey!! I do not wish to see it <3 if I think it's important and I have enough energy to care I would reblog it anyway, you guilt-tripping me automatically makes me stop listening <3
16. Do you like tag games?
I do!!! Would love to remember to do themđ. They make me feel like we are all sitting around a campfire asking each other weird questions.
17. Do you like ask games?
Sometimes!! I think it's funnier when I get just. random asks out of nowhere though. (my inbox is literally always open btw, go ahead and send me stupid shit if you're bored)
18. Which of your mutuals do you think is tumblr famous?

Mass Effect development insights and highlights from Bioware: Stories and Secrets from 25 Years of Game Development
This is the Mass Effect version of this post.
[In case you canât read it the subtitle in the bottom left logo above is âGuardians of the Citadelâ]
Note: Drug use is mentioned.
Cut for length.
Mass Effect 1
ME began its life in a vision document in fall 2003
Codenamed âSFXâ
Conceived of by Casey Hudson and a core team from KotOR. Its genesis was the intention to create an epic sci-fi RPG in an original setting that BioWare owned (so they could have full creative control), and in a setting that was conceived of first and foremost as a video game
Initially players could control any squadmate, but they wanted it to be about Shep and for players to be focused on Shep being a battlefield commander, rather than on switching bodies
By the start of 2004 its story was shaping up. Initially humans landed on Mars in 2250 and discovered evidence of an ancient alien race and a powerful substance, Black Sand, which rapidly advanced tech to the point that FTL travel was possible. (My note: obviously now the Prothean artifacts on Mars & associated mass effect force tech enabled this in the final canon, but I wonder if aspects of the âBlack Sandâ naming-type & powerful substance stuff was rolled into red sand from final canon) Humans were suddenly capable of travel to multiple star systems and made contact with a multitude of other species. At the start of the first game, these species together with humans had a fragile peace, with focus placed on the political center of the galaxy, a hub known as Star City, later renamed the Citadel
Multiplayer was a vision for the series as far back as 2003. The plan was for ME1, an Xbox exclusive at launch, to take advantage of the platformâs online components. Early designs saw players meeting in one of the central hubs to interact and trade items in their otherwise SP adventures
By 2006 it had the name ME and the story was more specific, with the theme of conflict between organic and synthetic lifeforms. The storyâs scope now stretched across 3 games and included scope for full co-op MP
They tried to do MP in every game, discussing it from the get-go, but it always just fell by the wayside. âWhen youâre trying to build something that is a new IP, on a new platform, with a new engine, youâve got to really focus on the core elements of the game.âÂ
The conversation system prototype was made in Jade Empire, and some of MEâs earliest writing was done in an old JE build. At first there was no conversation wheel. Paragon was âFriendlyâ and Renegade âHostileâ. In the prototype Shep was a silent unnamed Spectre. Many conversations in the prototype about the playerâs choice in smuggling a weapon through Noveria made it into the game
In said prototype a merchant referred to themselves as âthis oneâ, though the word hanar never appeared. The PC in it also had the option to end a conversation with âI should goâ. In the prototype also, Harkin was voiced by Mark Meer
An early version of the Mako got used as the krogan truck in ME2
Early concepts of the Citadel were drawn in pencil by CH. A piece of concept art of its final design was painted based on a photo of a sculpture near Aswan, Egypt
As with any new IP naming it was a struggle. They put out a call to all staff for ideas, did polls, made a name generator that combined words that they liked in random ways and made pretend logos of ones they liked in Photoshop to see if they could make themselves love the name or find visual potential in it. (Some of these names are in the pic at the top of this post.) CH liked âUnearthedâ as it was a reference to Prothean ruins dug up on Mars and humanityâs ascendance going away from Earth. They knew the game would have a central space station featuring prominently so some of the ideas were based on that - âThe Citadelâ, âThe Optigonâ, âThe Oculonâ. âElementâ was another one they had in mind due to the rare substance in the gameÂ
CH: âI was a big fan of John Harrisâ book Mass, which had epic-scaled sci-fi ideas, so that was a word that came up often. Many of the names came from the idea that the IP featured a fifth fundamental physical force (in addition to the known four of gravitational, electromagnetic, strong nuclear and weak nuclear) so the word âeffectâ came up pretty often.â Ultimately none of the ideas really felt right. One Monday morning they were going over the names and Greg Zeschuk said he had an idea on the weekend: âMass Effect!â CH: âI said, âI donât hate itâ, which in the naming process is a high compliment. And it stuck!â
CH on Shepâs Prothean vision from the beacon:Â âIt was hard to imagine how we would do this. CG was - and is - really expensive. Instead I wanted to try doing it through photography and video editing. So I went to a local grocery store and bought a few packages of the weirdest looking meat that I could find. Then I set up a little photoshoot in my basement, complete with some electronics parts and some red wine for juicyness.â He used these props to create a video sequence where the photos were rapidly cycled and blurred, along with production paintings, to create the scary vision an organic/machine experiment on the Protheans. These mashups were also used as inspiration for concept artists and level designers who were working on these themes
Tali used to be called Talsi
On the licensing side they often joke that theyâre licensing N7 not âMass Effectâ due to N7â˛s popularity
There was a confidential internal guide to the IP in 2007 to help devs along and summarize/synthesize the vision etc. Some excerpts from it are shown in the book and this is the first time the public have ever seen them
Early versions of Asari had hair
Asari were designed as a nod to classic TV sci-fi (with human actors wearing obvious makeup and prosthetics to play aliens)
The turian design guideline was âwe want them to be birds of preyâ. They also wanted a range of alien types, some close to human like Asari, while others were to be a lot further away, like turians
BioWare patented the conversation wheel, which was a first for them. CH had been frustrated with reviews of Jade Empire that said that the actioncentric game was too wordy [with its list dialogue]. âIâm like, story is words. [...] What is it about our games that is making people feel like theyâre wordy?â Then he thought âIn a game you kind of need to feel like youâre continuing to play it. Maybe you should continue feeling like youâre playing it actively into the dialogue.â â[The wheel] kind of gave a new experience with dialogue when you did start to react based on emotion, and thatâs ultimately what weâre trying to bring out in our gamesâ
The original krogan concept was based on a bat âwith a really wide squidgy face. We just used its face on top of this weird body and it kinda workedâ
Geth musculature was based on fiber-optic cables, with flexible plates of armor attached
The vision for the IP was 80s sci-fi inspired space opera
The concept art of Saren lifting Shep by the throat inspired a similar scene in-game. The staging wasnât planned til designers saw that art
A squadmate with Shepard on the way to meet Ash in an old storyboard was called Carter. Early name of Kaidan or Jenkins?
Bono from U2 was kinda instrumental in bringing us MEÂ lol
Finding the right cover art for ME1 was notably tricky
Matt Rhodes got his start drawing helmets for ME1, including one which would become Shepâs âsecond faceâ. He estimates he drew between 250-270 different ones
Some of the sounds in-game were people smashing watermelons with sledgehammers and sticking fists into various goos
The audio team had fun trying to slip the iconic main theme into unexpected places throughout the MET. âWe were very aware of how powerful that track was for the fans and it was tempting to overuse it for any moment we wanted to make really emotionalâ.
The theme was creatively repurposed in ME3: slowed down and reworked as the ambient sound for the SR-2. âIf you listen to it for a really long time, just stand in the Normandy and listen, youâll actually hear the notes change slowly. It doesnât sound like music, it sounds like a background ambiance, but itâs there.â (My note: Well no wonder the Normandy feels so much like home?? đ sneaky..)
Bug report: âMako Tornadoâ. There wasnât enough friction between the tires and the ground, causing testers to lose control of the vehicle and send it spinning into the air like a tornado. âAs it turns, the front end comes up, and then it starts spinning and spinning and spinning and spinning faster and faster and faster until it just flies up in the skyâ (My note: Sounds like a regular day in the Mako to me)
Cerberus originally had a bigger role in this game. It was cut but they had a whole explorable outpost. âI called it Misery,â says Mac Walters, âIt was this planet with a little outpost that said âWelcome to Miseryââ. Everything on the outpost was shit - dirty worn stuff, no windows, no kitchen, the vehicle bay was open to the elements etc
The Reaper sound is literal garbage. Some audio designers went on a recording trip to a national park. One of them got fixated on a garbage can, âa metal bear-proof receptacle with a heavy lid that creaked horribly when openedâ. âIt was like, ominous, spooky, tonal and almost musical. I decided to throw a mic into the garbage and record it moving. I didnât know what it was going to be until laterâ
They were making lots of noises to record like throwing logs and rocks around. An old couple peered at them through the window of their camper van in the woods and must have called the cops because then the cops showed up, pulled them over and told them to stop. The cops towed their car (the driverâs plates were Cali plates and expired), drove them to Edmonton outskirts and then the audio producer Shauna got a call and had to go pick them up âlike three little boysâ. âWe got a stern talking toâ. Once back they were playing around with the garbage sound, editing it etc. Casey heard it and proclaimed âThatâs the sound of the Reapersâ
Preston Watamaniuk: âThere are things I could have done to Mass 1 to make it an infinitely better game with better UIsâ and some simple cuts and changes. âBut when youâre living with it, itâs very hard to see those thingsâ
BioWare Labs
As social media and smartphone games exploded, BioWare dedicated a small team dedicated to exploring opportunities here - BioWare Labs
Mass Effect: Galaxy used a unique graphic art style and static visual presentation common in visual novels. It has the distinction of being the only iOS game BW have made during their first 25 years
Scrapped ideas were a 3rd person space shooter called Mass Effect: Corsair and 2 DA titles - a strategy game and a top-down dungeon crawler starring young Wynne. (My note: Maybe the corsairs stuff was rolled into Jacobâs backstory in 2, the Alliance Corsairs)
Corsair was a very short-lived project that never got its feet under it. It was a spin-off on Nintendo DS featuring a behind-the-ship perspective and branching dialogue. At one point it had MP. The idea behind it was basically âME: Freelancerâ - fly your ship around, do missions, get credits. It had a limited branching story but was a gameplay-centered experience intended to fill the gap between ME1 and 2. That gap ended up being filled by Galaxy
Galaxy and Corsairâs smaller screen allowed concept artists to use bold colors and a simplistic character design style to help those games stand out from Shepâs story
Nick Thornborrow did some art for Corsair but was worried his art style didnât fit ME. He moved to DA where he feels his art style fits better
Lots of BioWare VAs and even a lead writer and the VO director are drawn from Edmontonâs local community theater scene, which is vibrant. Think this is how Mark Meer got involved
Mass Effect 2
Player choices carrying over was a first for BW
Dirty Dozen-inspired plot
Its plot is a web of conditionals (see Suicide Mission)
Was more of a shooter than anything BW had made since Shattered Steel
There was 2 camps on the team, those who wanted to push combat and systems forward and redefine the ME experience and those who wanted to make a true sequel, with the same gameplay and systems but a new story. Karin Weekes:Â âI think it ended up being a good push-pull. It felt like a pretty healthy creative conflictâ
âME2 was a game you could hold up to someone who argues that games arenât a serious medium and go âOh yeah, then why is Martin Sheen in this?ââ Sheen was their first pick for TIM
The idea for TIM came from a mash-up of concepts CH had collected over the years. The name âIllusiveâ originally came from his pitch for naming DAOâs Eclipse engine, a word inspired by Obi-Wanâs line âItâs not about the mission, Master. Itâs something... elsewhere. Elusiveâ. âI thought, what if we called our next engine 'Elusive', but used an âIâ, and then itâs like âIllusionâ. [...] I still really like the word with an âIâ and what it conjuresâ
When ME1 DLC was in production, CH had been watching a lot of CNN, specifically Anderson Cooper. âHow is one guy travelling to all these places and never looking tired and always being able to speak with clarity?â CH says it seemed almost superhuman. âWhat if there was someone who is the absolute maximum of the things you would aspire to be, but also the worst of humanity?â Cooper, though not evil, became an inspiration for TIM down to the gray hair and piercing blue eyes
Inspiration for TIMâs behind-the-scenes role pulling political strings came from Jack Bauerâs brother Graem in 24. Graem âcan call up the president and tell him what to do and hang up, because heâs so connected and so influentialâ. Sheen had played a president and his performance brought gravitas and wisdom to the role. He had quit smoking, but the character smokes. He didnât want to fake it, but he also didnât want to smoke, âso he actually asked for a cigaretteâ to hold so he could stop his words to take drags with natural cadence
Writing was still pushing to write and revise lines hours before VO started. A series of problems like injury and some writers leaving for other opportunities left it so that Karin, Lukas Kristjanson and editor Cookie Everman hand to land the story safely, with PW helping where they could. Lukas:Â âWe took over the writing bug and task list, and I canât stress enough how much [Karin and Cookie] did to get ME2 out the door. Thereâs no part of that thing we didnât touchâ. Karin:Â âThat was the most dramatic 2 weeks of my lifeâ
Initial fan reaction when they started promo-ing ME2 was very negative because people didnât want to know about new chars like Jack and Mordin. â[fans were like] âGet them out of here. We want our characters from the first gameâ. But then when they played them, those became some of the most popular chars [of the series]â
Concept art of Thane has an idea annotation saying âFace can shapeshift?â
At one point when designing Thane concept artists sent multiple variations of him to the team asking them to vote on which was the most attractive
Most of the Normandy crew was written by lead level designer Dusty Everman. Lukas gave him advice in the evenings between bugs
BioWare Montreal made ME2 and 3 cinematics
CC for Shep was based on tools used by char designers to create in-game chars. Under the hood similar tools existed to create aliens
Aliens were much easier to animate than humans. When something is human itâs very difficult to make it look realistic and you can see all the mistakes and everything
Over the holiday period in 2007 CH worked out a diagram on a single piece of paper that would define the entire scope and structure of the game. The diagram is included in the book
Bug report:Â âI shot a krogan so hard that his textures fell offâ. At one point shotgun blast damage was applied to each of the pellets fired, and shot enemies ended up with just the default checkerboard Unreal texture on them after their textures got blown off
Blasto was meant to be 1 step above an Easter egg but his fan popularity prompted them to bring him back in ME3
They rewrote chunks of Jack 2 days before she went to VO. She was the only one they could change because all the other NPCs were recorded. They redesigned her mission by juggling locked NPC lines and changing Shepâs reactions by rewriting text paraphrases to change the context of the already-recorded VO
Lukas snuck obscure nods ito ME2â˛s distress calls. In the general distress call for the Hugo Gernsback, thereâs BWâs initialâs and Edmontonâs phone number backwards. In a fault in a beacon protocol thereâs the initials and backward phone number from Tommy Tutoneâs âJennyâ. In 2 other general distress calls thereâs initials and numbers from Glenn Miller Orchestraâs âPennsylvania 6-5000âł and initials and numbers from Geddy Lee and Rushâs â2112âł respectivelyÂ
Mass Effect 3
âThe end of an era marks the beginning of anotherâ
ME3Â âmarked the end of Shepâs storyâ
Saying bye to Shep was as difficult for devs as it was for players
JHaleâs final VO session included Andersonâs death and romanced Garrusâ goodbye. âWe were in the session and we both just started cryingâ, Caroline says. âI couldnât come on the line to give her notes because I was crying, and she was crying. And so there was just this minute-long pause of like, nothing, nothing, nothing - just silence through the airwaves. And then I came on and just told her that I was crying and she said âIâm crying!ââ They talked about these anecdotes also here on the N7 Day reunion panel
The Microsoft Kinect voice support required devs to teach Kinect hundreds of commands in a variety of accents across multiple languages. The result was useful but made for some awkward moments. Numerous players accidentally said âgethâ or âquarianâ while making a particular decision and accidentally killed Tali
MP chars were voiced by cops and military people
The helmet on one of the MP chars was originally designed for cancelled project Revolver
The payload device at the end needed to attach to the Citadel while essentially serving as a giant trigger. âIt ended up becoming quite the engineering feet just to visualize how this thing would move and connect to the Citadelâ
Concept artists explored creating an anti-team, where Kai Leng was almost an anti-Shepard essentially, with an elite squad to counteract your team. This idea never went beyond concept phase
ME3 Special Edition was released on Nintendo Wii U exclusively. This exclusive version of the game includes Genesis 2 (a sequel to the original Genesis comic) and unique gameplay features that took advantage of the touchscreen GamePad. For years Sonic Chronicles: Dark Brotherhood had had the honor of being BWâs only game made for a Nintendo console
FemShep regrettably didnât feature in major ME marketing til ME3. Later releases like DAI, MEA and Anthem have taken increasing care not to gender their protagonists in cover art
To capture combat sounds they took a trip to CFB Wainwright, a military base southeast of Edmonton. They got a big tour of it and were allowed to record anything they could find. The tour ended with them getting to drive and shoot tanks (real shells). The force of doing that sent waves through Joel Green, he felt his whole chest compress when it went off; the perfect sound for the Black Widow! After the trip the soldiers let him keep the shell he fired and itâs been passed on like a torch to various devs since
Kakliosaurs began life as a joke in the writersâ room after John Dombrow placed a Grunt figure on a t-rex toy he had on his desk. Lore was brainstormed to justify the mash-up before someone asked, âWhy donât we put this in the game?â They loved it so much Karin had custom coffee mugs made
Bug report: For a while Taliâs final romance scene would fire when she was supposed to be dead
âBalancing combat: how designers in ME3 entered an âarms raceââ - the solution to players feeling OP vs players feeling frustrated by really strong enemies is to find a good middle ground, but for designers Corey Gaspur and Brenon Holmes, it was war. Brenon designed enemies, Corey designed guns. Corey âwas obsessed with bigger, heavier guns. We had this sort of informal competition where heâd make this crazy overturned gun that would just murder all the enemies, and then I tuned some stuff up to compensateâ
Brenon had to invent new ways to âstop Coreyâ and this led to the Phantoms. Corey had in turn designed consumable rockets that could wipe out entire waves of enemies. He mustâve figured this would make short work of Brenonâs space ninjas, but Brenon had other plans: âI had just added the ability for her to cut rockets [when Corey was playing MP and he was watching]. She cut the rocket in half... Corey just turns and looks at me and is like: âReally dude? I just shot a rocket at this Phantom and sheâs fine? Not even damaged? Zero damage?ââÂ
This friendly rivalry helped elevate ME3â˛s gameplay. Corey had a knack for making a gun feel so good to fire it had his fellow designers scrambling to keep up. It was his version of balancing. Before Corey sadly passed away he mentored Boldwin Li in all things weapon design and the arms race continued
Corey designed the Arc Pistol. It was causing problems for enemies because it was too powerful. It seemed hell bent on staying that way, Boldwin would tune down all its stats and it was still doing 3x the damage it should have been doing. âI was like âWhat the hell?â, and then I looked closer. It secretly fired 3 bullets for every pull of the trigger! Corey, you sneaky jerkâ
The day it launched there were midnight launch parties across North America including one near the BW building. Numerous devs sat at long tables greeting fans and signing autographs as the fans picked up preorders. When midnight struck the line was long enough that it took several hours for some fans to get their game. One particular fan is remembered: âIt was 3am. Some guy drove up from Calgary with his friends. He was like one of the last people in line. I think he was sort of tired-drunk. He threw himself across the tables, pulled up his shirt and shouted âGuys, sign my abs!â And like I did, because he waited so long. It felt impolite not to. So I hope he enjoyed his copy of ME3âł
For designing Protheans concept artists had free reign to design something that read as ancient
Before the concept art team had the story of the game to work toward, they explored wild ideas of their own including an image of the crew stealing back the Normandy to go after the Reapers
Jen Cheverie was testing scenes and was initially excited to be testing Mordin scenes, til she saw she was testing the Renegade version of his death. âThis is even before like all of the audio and everything was in, so you didnât even have the sad music. I remember sitting at my desk and my hands just went to my face when I saw that the gun Shep pulls on Mordin is the gun he gives Shep in ME2. I burst into tears and was crying for the rest of the day. People are waving to me as they walk by and Iâm like, âItâs ok, Iâm just killing my best friendââÂ
Thereâs a segment called âShepardâs story endsâ. Casey on the ending: âThereâs a whole bunch of things that come together to make it incredibly tense and emotional for players. I think the biggest one was the sense of finality, that whatever it was that happened in that very last moment... was it.âÂ
Wrapping up the story was a massive feat. In a way all of ME3 is an ending. Its final moments were the playersâ last with a char theyâd been with all the way from Eden Prime
âAnd while the critical reception of the game was extremely positive, many fans were unsatisfied with the ending, which became one of the most controversial in the history of games.â CH: âWe were, on one hand, at the end of a marathon trying to finish the game and the series. But as devs we also knew that there would be more. We knew that we would continue to tell the story. In retrospect, we didnât fully appreciate the tremendous sense of finality that it would have for peopleâ. He envisioned an ending that posed new questions, something in the tradition of high sci-fi that left players dreaming about what that particular galaxyâs future could hold. âFrankly, thereâs a lot more that we could have and should have done to honor the work players put in, to give them a stronger sense of reward and closureâ
AAA games are massive undertakings with a million moving parts. Somehow they come together but even the best-planned projects donât turn out quite like devs hope. From start to end video game production is a series of compromises. Itâs rare if not impossible for devs to ship a game theyâre entirely happy with. âI think that people imagine that when you finish a game, itâs exactly the way you wanted it to be. But whether people end up loving or hating the final result, we work hard to finish it the best we can, knowing that thereâs a lot we would have wanted to do better. I think thatâs true of any creative workâ
As the dust settled after the initial reaction to the ending and later its epilogue, meant to show the wide-reaching ripple effects of Shepâs final choice, âplayers emerged mostly asking for one thingâ. CH: âNow, most of what we hear, after both ME3 and MEA, is âHey, just go make more Mass Effectâ. And that to me is the most important thing. Knowing that players want to return to the ME universe is what inspires us to press on and imagine what comes nextâ
Mass Effect: Andromeda
By creating a new ME in a new galaxy the team was challenged to put their own visual stamp on the game while keeping it true to the franchise
Being the first ME game on a new gen of consoles meant for more detail
âMassive transport ships called arks populated with salarians, turians, humans, asari and quariansâ made the risky jump to the Cluster
MEA was the first time BW had truly codeveloped across 3 studios: Edmonton, Montreal and Austin. The bulk of the work especially early on was done in Montreal, which was composed of a handful of Edmonton expats and heaps of experienced devs who joined from elsewhere specifically to bring a new ME experience to life. Series vets in Edmonton then came on to contribute writing, cinematics, design and QA, along with leadership from creative director Mac Walters and the core Production team. Austin writers and level designers also joined the fray
âIt took a new team to take ME beyond the Milky Wayâ
Mac: âA lot of people in Montreal joined BW as fans of the franchise, so they just had this passion, and it felt like it was more like the days of Jade Empire, where a smaller younger team gets to do something for the first time. Even though it wasnât necessarily a new IP for me, it felt fresh and new because of that. The team was just super excited to be working on itâ
Early plans had the player exploring hundreds of worlds, procedurally generated, allowing for a nearly infinite variety of experiences. But as development wore on, it became clear that the game narrative required more specific, hand-touched level design on each world to keep the story focused and the experience engaging. âThe plan was to give players numerous uncharted worlds to explore. Designers worked hard to come up with procedural elements that would make such planets special. Eventually the team made the difficult decision to abandon procedural planets in favor of more memorable hand-touched alien worlds, each with a specific story to tellâ
One challenge was defining what ME meant without Shep. Care was given to include many of the METâs key species. âRyder recruited turian, asari, krogan and salarian followersâ. Like Shep Ryder represents humanityâs hope for a peaceful coexistence among aliens who had long operated without human contact
Beginning with MEA the team decided that with few exceptions vehicles in ME have 6 wheels. Early Nomad concepts were bulkier. Later ones focused on its ability to move over its ability to protect itself from hostile fire, underlining the themes of exploration
German concept designer and auto-motive futurist Daniel Simon was contracted to create the Nomad and Tempest. The Tempestâs final design took inspo from the ConcordeÂ
Concepts for angaran fighter ships have the following notes:Â âTwo doors swing open, wings rotate down to function as landing struts, the landing struts split open. It has a spinning turbine engineÂ
Despite being set a galaxy away and some 600 years after Mordinâs death, there was a time when he had a cameo. It wasnât cut due to running out of time however, it was cut due to drug references. John Dombrow explains: âOne day I had to write a small quest for Kadara. I thought itâd be amusing if these 2 guys living way out on the fringes in a shack were growing plants for uh, medicinal purposes, and needed Ryderâs help with it. It occurred to me, wouldnât it be amusing if Ryder had the option of actually trying âthe medicineâ to see what would happen? And I thought, what if it turned into some hallucination that somehow involved SAM - like maybe SAM would sing? But why? How could I motivate that? Then it hit me. Who else in the ME game sings unexpectedly? MORDIN. As a nod to him I wrote SAM singing Modern Major-General. It got even better when our cine designer John Ebenger wanted to take it even further. Bless him, he came in on a Saturday to do a special hallucination showing Mordin himself. It was great. Til the fateful day we were told MEA had already been submitted to the ratings board. Thatâs when you declare things like drug references in your game. Mordin fell under that category which meant it was a no-go. We were too lateâ
Ryderâs white AI armor contrasts Shepâs iconic dark armor (intentional design)
Concept art for Ryder involved experiments with cloth (cloaks, ponchos, capes - âPull here to release cloakâ) and asymmetrical design elements
For alien design, thereâs a few exceptions but humanoid figures are the ME standard and this persisted into MEA
Kett and angara concepts explored striking lines and texturesÂ

Fic Recs!
Since I'm on hiatus, I've finally had time to do some reading, and I thought I'd give some fic recommendations, since I won't be posting for quite a while. These are my absolute favourites!
(I'm splitting this into two posts â one for JayDick and one for JayTim â because now that I'm finished with the first half it's quite long)

Word Count: 12,360
Summary: Red Hood is a little bit in love with his partner, Nightwing, who has a huge crush on Jason Todd, the hot bookstore owner, who is actually the Red Hood, who is too busy being in love to notice Dick Grayson, who's actually Nightwing.
Jason and Dick fall in love with the wrong versions of each other, and things become complicated fast.
â More identity porn, but this one is a lot more sort of missed connections, plus it has bookshop owner Jay who was never taken in by Bruce! It really has you begging SOMETHING to happen to somehow make them see that THEY ARE EACH OTHER, THEY ARE THE ONES THEY LIKE. AHHHH IT'S THE SAME PERSON. And when it finally does happen, it's so sweet and satisfying. (I recommend checking out their other fics too! Lots of sweetness.)
Lie To Me, Darling
By: Chrystie, kate882
Word Count: 19,214
Summary: Officer Dick Grayson is undercover in the infamous Red Hood's gang trying to track down the man behind the helmet. With his former partner killed for being found out, there's a new guy in the gang to take his place. Jason doesn't seem like the average new gang recruit, and Dick may be getting more than he bargained for trying to get close to him.
â Okay, ngl I JUST now noticed that this one is by the same people as the first one, and I specifically didn't want to put multiple fics by the same people (just say I recommend checking out their other stuff, but not rec separately), but it's too late now and I don't have a 7th JayDick fic to recc that isn't also an author repeat, and I don't want it to be uneven.
But ANYWAY. This one will fuck you up, I can't lie. Unhappy ending, but if you can brave that, ohhh it's so good. It's so damn sweet whilst the good times last, even though you know it's only temporary and it's all going to go to hell at some point... man. It hurts. But it hurts so good. It's beautiful, and I personally think it's worth the pain.
Two Birds on a Wire
By: empires, pentapus
Word Count: 20,565
Summary: Dick asks Jason for help on a case. Jason should have never agreed.
â It's probably laughable that I'm reccing this, since pentapus is one of the authors and their art is like huge in the JayDick fandom, and the fic has more than 22.5k views, which seems to be quite a lot as far as JayDick fics go. But in the event that you haven't read it yet... This is actually the very first JayDick fic I EVER read, it introduced me to the ship, and I just reread it and it's still just as amazing, what a winner to start out with!
The dynamic between Jay and Dick, the way Dick gets so into his undercover role, Jay's emotional turmoil, the action â it's all just absolute chef's kiss! It's so hard to write action well, and these two made this fic so engaging!
All Soulmates Final, No Refunds
By: empires, salvadore
Word Count: 38,900
Summary: Mystic Waters Grande Hotel sells itself as a luxury soulmate retreat with all manner of coupleâs activities. The cost is high, and all is not as it appears on the hotelâs grounds. Dick and Jason go undercover as newlywed soulmates to find out whatâs behind the rash of missing persons. And dig up old feelings in the process.
â (Since empires was collaborating with two different people of the different fics, I don't count that as a repeat).
Well firstly, this is a rare Batman!Dick JayDick! And secondly, yes, one of the ubiquitous soulmate AUs. But with some very interesting twists! Also, like TBOAW above, the action in this is amazing, and absolutely had me on the edge of my seat. Similarly, their undercover personas were lots of fun, and it was very fun to see them push each other further and further with them.
Secrets of the Sea
By: ParzivalHallows
Word Count: 42,711
Summary: Being a merperson was dangerous enough, but being a merperson captured by pirates? That's got to be one of the worst fates for a merman. Merman Dick Grayson is captured by a slave ship, where he meets Jason Todd, who's a slave on that ship. Together, the two plan an escape. However, they need to put aside their odds first, which is very difficult for the two stubborn men.
â I have to give you fair warning first, this one is incomplete and hasn't been updated since 2017, so I don't think it's ever going to be finished (but it can't hurt to leave a nice comment!) BUT WAIT, DON'T SCROLL YET, hear me out. It's really good, okay. You do need to mind the warning tags because there is major character death (not Jay or Dick though, and since it's not complete I'm kind of choosing to believe that they're not really dead and later in the story it actually turns out that they managed to survive).
There are a lot of grim things in this story, it's really about survival, but the worldbuilding is fucking phenomenal, and the author drew me right in. The descriptions and the action and emotion, the unexpected magic that they have to figure out? It's all so cool and well done.
Steady On Forward
By: JayseHasNoGrace
Word Count: 96,287
Summary: Dick Grayson's life has never been easy, but he'd like to think it's been going better lately. He's been operating mainly out of Gotham again for almost a year, and has been in a steady relationship for just over. He knows where he stands with crime-fighting, and the family is all on pretty good terms, considering.
Things are really going pretty well.
Unfortunately, the balance doesn't last long, and old horrors from Dick's past end up dredged up alongside new ones.
This is a story about love and family, but equally so about trauma and healing from it. Please heed the warnings in the preface.
â Alright, the final JayDick rec, the longest, and the darkest. But wait, again, don't scroll! It's also by far the most hopeful AND FLUFFY. Now, the author is NOT fucking around about heeding those warnings, there's a shitload of them and it's really heavy, hard shit. Do not get me wrong, this fic is going to HURT you. But by the end, it's going to have felt so cathartic, and you're going so feel soft and hopeful and whole. I don't know how they did it, but it's SUCH an emotional rollercoaster. Another commenter on AO3 (mach5plus1) said it better than I could:
I gave this fic my whole heart, it took it, smiled and said âawwww, Iâll take care of it!â
Then started putting pressure on it and I told it âouch, that hurtsâ
The fic kept smiling and put more pressure until a piece broke off (last chapter)
and then another (this chapter)
The fic keeps doing it until my heart is shattered into pieces and itâs standing over each shard with a frown saying âoopsâ (the upcoming chapters)
Then, after finding each piece again and picking them up, the fic will slowly push each piece back into place.
By the end itâll give my heart back a little different, but somehow better than it was when I gave it away.
It will crush your heart, but it will lovingly patch it back together by the end, I promise. If you can read it without getting triggered, I thought everything was well handled, and it's so worth it. (I recommend checking out their other JayDick fic too, they only have one, but it's a fluffy romcom, so if you need a break after this one, that's there!)

CSAU :: Moonie Jericho and the Mysterious Case of the Moon-Jumper Mask
At long last, It is finished! Happy Halloween!Â
Below the line is a lighthearted fic taking place in the âCoffee Shopâ AU (( @doodledrawsthingsâ ))with Magic! Family fun! Low stakes! And a gratuitous cameo by my OC because of course Nell is hereÂ
Seriously though this fic is about as lighthearted as it gets. At the end of the fic are a few sketches I drew but didnât end up coloring.Â
((Thereâs going to be an alternate ending posted separately at a later date, but its not relevant to the fic))Â
Enjoy!Â
--
Fall in Subcon Forest came in gently as always, and by the time Halloween rolled around, everyone was firmly in their sweaters and beanies and thick leggings and hiking boots that were only occasionally used for hiking. The leaves of the trees and the shining sun framed the town in such lovely muted colors that it looked like a picture right out of a magazine.
Not that anyone in the Horizon was looking out the window to see it - the curtains were closed in an attempt to not blind the employees and clientele.
It was that time between the end of school but before trick or treating, which meant that all of the teachers and parents were coming into the Horizon with their kids to get the new specialty drinks - well decorated and tasty, and more importantly, not hilariously overpriced. The kids in particular seemed to love the âGhoulishly White Hot Chocolateâ, and the teens flocked to the âJack-O-Spices Frozen Pumpkin Latteâ
Luka was almost certain that the pumpkin spice smell would burn itself so deep into his nose heâd never be able to un-smell it. A small price to pay for the rise in business, he supposed.
âLuka, Two Snatcher-ccinos!â Clover called from the cash register.
âI still hate that!â He responded with a light tone
âToo bad, make âem!â She teased back with a light laugh.
âDonât get all testy, you two! Weâre only open for another hour!â MJ called, grinning before turning back to the coffee machine, where they were effortlessly making yet another latte.
âToo long!â Clover argued, grabbing a muffin for a customer from the bakery display
âYouâre telling me, and I still have to take Bow and Hattie trick or treatingâ Luka huffed, finishing up one of the âSnatcher-ccinosâ and moving onto the next one.
âWE are!â MJ corrected. Luka just playfully rolled his eyes.
The conversation ended up dying rather quickly as the business went through its last rush, and, at long last, 4 oâclock came, and the store shut down. The three employees did a rather quickly clean up this night around - they were all eager to be anywhere but work that spooky night.
Once in the back of the store, Luka seemed to almost melt in relief, leaning further and further into the wall.
âUgh, my limbs feel like Jellyâ he commented as his voice gained its echo
âFor all we know, they are,â Clover teased. âWeâre meeting at MJs in an hour, right?â She stretched.
âYeah.â Luka nodded âHave they already run off?â
âYup. Theyâre excitedâ She chuckled âYou gonna get home alright?â
âYeah, thanks. See you laterâ
âLater!â

That stupid, cursed thing of a mask had not moved in weeks since heâd found it, and its stupid grin had started haunting the corner of his vision when ever he was in his studio.
It seems like it's decided that sitting on the desk in his art studio was its happy place. At least it was out of the way, and in a place he didnât frequent often.
Though its eyes definitely still moved, which gave MJ hives like you would not believe. Why he kept it in his studio he wasnât sure.
Tim had told him that the thing was mostly harmless, that it just seemed a bit⌠off, which wasnât the worst thing in the world. Timmy even said that he got âgood vibesâ off of it, which was a strange phrase to use on something that felt at the very least mildly cursed.
Finishing with the caplet for his costume, gently clasping it, he looked in the mirror and gave himself a smile.
It was obscure, sure, but heâd put a lot of work into it! The legend of the âLonely Manâ was well known in these parts, maybe someone would get it. Someone had to.
Whether or not anyone got it, he was still happy with the tattered thing. That faux old age took forever to get right.
As he straightened out his clothes, his eyes caught the mask once more.
His hand picked it up off his desk, and his thumb rubbed on the odd surface. He couldnât really tell what it was made of, but it was⌠oddly smooth, he thought. His brow furrowed as he looked at its eyes, a single pupil in its left eye, and a cascade of diamonds in the other. It was certainly an interesting and eye-catching design. He also liked the blue and reds, and that weirdly off-putting grin.
Such an odd thing.
He held it up with one hand over his face - not putting it on, but getting a look in the mirror at how it would look with the outfit.
He found it utterly bizarre that he could see clearly through the eyes despite what seemed like thick paint over it.
The mask itself wasnât actually that scary when taken all at once. Oddly enough, it seemed to match with his outfit - at least, color wise. It didnât even seem evil or anything. It seemed⌠kind.
That was an odd word to use. MJ tended to flip flop on how he feels about the damned thing
Before he could think any more about it, his doorbell rang, and the mask was left on his desk, forgotten the moment company arrived.
âWho is it?â He asked as he approached the door
âThe Dread Pirate Roberts!â A little voice announced as the oak opened up.
To his absolute delight, Harriet was dressed indeed the Dread Pirate Roberts, missing nothing but the mask (The town doesnât allow masks on minors, for some reason. A weird little policy). Next to her stood an excited Bow, grinning from ear to ear. He knew exactly who she was, but still asked-
âAnd who are you?â
âMy name is Inigo Montoyaâ She said with all the faux-seriousness she could muster, holding up a foam sword âYou killed my father, prepare to die!â
âOh, goodness, the finest swordsperson in the world and The Dread Pirate Roberts have come to my home, I donât stand a chance!â He moved out of his way as the kids ran into the apartment, and their father walked up behind him.
When his eyes went to Luka, he let out a snort. The man was dressed in a slightly silly looking prince outfit dyed almost completely purple, and his form was mostly purple as well - an energy-saving tactic if ever there was one.
âAnd you are?â
âHeâs the ghost of prince Humperdinkâ Bow grinned. âThis was the best costume we could find for itâ
âI honestly think he shoulda died at the end of the movie so I'm cool with it.â Harriet commented as MJ moved to the side and let the group in âIs Clover here yet?â
âNot yet, Iâm sure sheâll be here any minute and we can get right along with trick or treating!â MJ announced
âYay!â the girls responded in unison, taking their place on MJs couch and turning on his old television for a brief moment of entertainment
Mj looked at Luka and grinned âWell, youâre lookinâ spooky, Lukaâ
âYou kind of do too⌠what do you look like?â
MJ snorted âIâm the âLonely Man of Subcon forestâ. Heard of it?â
âNope, donât think Iâve been here long enoughâ Luka shrugged âDoes look nice though. Very zombie-ish.â
The two chatted for a bit before there was another ring barely 10 minutes later.
âThat must be Cloâ MJ pushed himself off of the wall. âCan you get that? I want to grab my wallet so we can get the kids some ice cream before they go running aroundâ
Luka nodded, giving him a grateful smile before turning to the door to greet the final member of the trio
MJ popped back into his studio, grabbing his wallet⌠and looking again at the mask.
He pocketed his wallet, and picked the mask up again. His thumbs rubbing against the strange texture of the maskâs sides.
He couldnât help but admit that he was tempted.  Maybe, he could just see what itâd look like, just for a moment. Who knows? Maybe this has all been anxiety for nothing and the mask is just⌠weird.
He looked back into the mirror, and placed the mask on his face.
There was a moment where he stared amusedly at his reflection - it added a certain air to his outfit. Maybe wearing it out wouldn't be so b-
And then his body seized
He couldnât move, he couldnât breathe. He trembled and a pain started from his head and traveled down his spine. It was like the worst shiver from the cold heâd ever experienced. Like ice was pressed directly against his skin. It dispersed like a fog, freezing freezing, and, suddenly-
It stopped.
Panting heavily, MJ pulled themselves back up to a standing position - when had they bent over like that? - and lifted their head, making eye contact with themselves in the mirror.
âGAH?!â
They were - blue! And - and the mask was very much not a mask!!!
When they blinked, it blinked. When they moved, it moved. When they grimaced, the mouth moved along to create the expression. their eyes scanned over the crescent shape, past their neck and then landed on their-
âH-hands!â They stared - they were missing a finger and - had claws?? They clenched their fists in disbelief, eyes catching on a glinting just under their sleeve.
.. Where had the chains come from?
âMJ? MJ are you okay?â
Clover
âD-donât come in, its fine!!â They panicked, âIâm uh, just, finishing up and stuff with my costume!â
âIt looked finished to meâ Luka commented âDid something rip?â
âY-yes?? yes! Something totally rippedâ
âTheyâre lying!â Hattie pointed out
âSounds like their lying voiceâ Bow added.
Curse these adorable, smart little girls!
âI-Iâm fine!â They yelled out âTotally fine, just fineâ
â... MJ Iâm opening the door, be decentâ
âNo, Clover, I - â
But the door opened anyway
And Clover - dressed up as âGeneric princessâ - looked in, and ⌠stared.
â.... MJ?â
â.... H-hi, Clover.â
âClover, what are-â Luka cut himself off âUhâŚ.â
âItâs me! Its MJ, I uh - â They tried to come up with a succinct explanation for the situation, despite not having any real idea.
âThe maskâ Luka quickly concluded, recognizing the face after MJs unfortunately previous run-ins.
âI ⌠yesâ MJâs shoulders slumped a bit.
âHey, at least you still have feetâ Luka commented, causing MJ to look down and see that he did in fact still have his shoes on. Thank heaven for small mercies.
âWhat happened, what is it?!â Harriet pushed her way through, her eyes wide as saucers once they landed on the recently transformed adult â... Whoaâ
âI ⌠I put on the mask. I was curious and - and it..â They looked back down at the pale, blue hands, nervously moving the fingers and claws. âI felt like I was freezing, my whole body and thenâŚâ They trailed off.
âWhoa..â Harriet approached him slowly âIt's like, Majoraâs Mask!â
Lukas put his hand on her shoulder to stop her from jumping - now really was not the time â... I suppose that's one way to describe it.â He gave a deliberate, thoughtful face towards his transformed friend.
Bow was very firmly behind the adults, staring rather intently and slightly bewildered. Sure, she had been getting used to Mr. Princeton as a parent but.. This was somehow very different.
â... We need to talk to Tim.â Clover concluded
âTimâs out of townâ Luka reminded the group with a grimace âHe and Timmy had some kind of meeting thing with other magical people. We donâtâŚâ Luka huffed, his hair fluffing up a bit âWe donât know anyone else whose adept at magic like they areâ
Harriet furrowed her brow a bit, looking at the discomfort that MJ was experiencing, rubbing their hands together. Could they be stuck like that? She wanted to think that maybe this really was like the Zelda game, but who could tell? It's not like they knew anyoneâŚ.
âYes we do!â She snapped her fingersâI kinda hate that Mu was right, but there is a witch in town!â
âWhat?â Lukasâ brow furrowed âWho?â
0o0o0o0o0
Getting to the edge of town was⌠novel, to put it simply. The group was rather lucky that Luka was used to doing this sort of thing. And he was about 4 times larger than the group, so that helped in flying them around.
With the sun kissing the earth, red rays crawling into the darker sky, they didnât have too much time, but followed Harriet and Bow as they got past the town center, and led them down to-
âWait, why are we at Nellâs place?â Clover stared ahead at the Mint-green home, succulents hanging from pots and a radio sitting on the edge of the porch.
âBecause Nurse Nell is a witch!â Harriet announced walking up the two steps of the porch.
âWhat- Harriet!â Luka startled.
âIts true!â Bow defended as Hattie knocked on the door.
âKids, weâve known Nell for a long time, sheâs not-â
âShe is!â Hattie argued âWe saw it!â
âShe made us promise to keep it a secret!â Bow added.
Said nurse opened the door as MJ tried to speak up
âI wasnât expecting trick-or treaters,â She greeted before looking out the door, âBut I do-â She paused as her eyes landed on the strange group at her front porch.
There was a rather awkward, extended silence as her eyes scanned MJ through her thick lenses with a gaze that conveyed a strange kind of surprise.
â.... Inside, nowâ She pulled the door open further, leaving no room for argument.
The adults shared a glance, but did as she said, entering her small living room. She greeted them with a nod as they entered, and shut the door behind them, motioning for MJ to approach her.
She didnât say a word as they did so, and very slowly lifted her hands to their face, holding it steady as she scrutinized. âWhat happened? Less than 3 sentencesâ She half asked/half demanded. Her tone wasnât harsh, but it was serious.
âUh, I put on a cursed mask and it uh⌠did thisâ They tried to sum up.
âWhere did you get the mask?â
âI found it in the forest. I thought it was abandoned from the spirit festivalâ
âAnd why did you pick up an abandoned mask in the forest?â
They awkwardly didnât respond. She sighed
âI get it, hunâ She responded, resigned. âStay stillâ
âI amâ
âStillerâ
Clover and Luka watched her with some skepticism, seeing the woman take a deep breath, and as she exhaled, her hands suddenly glowed dimly, tapping at the side of MJs head.
âHah! See! Told you!â Hattie pointed, jumping slightly
âShhhhhhhh!â Bow shook her âSheâs doinâ magic stuff!â
âHmâŚâ She masterfully ignored the yelling children âWell, good news is that the magic isnât very strong, Just⌠aggressive.â Nell announced. âAnd it's not malevolentâ She let go of their face.
â... I⌠How can you tell?â MJ asked, their own hand tapping their blue cheek.
â.. Let's say it's a feelingâ She summed up. âYou can sit down. I need to grab something from my libraryâ
And she left the room
â.... I donât think Iâve ever seen Nell that seriousâ Clover spoke out âAlso the uh, glowing hands? Didnât know she could do thatâ
âHow did you not know she had magic?â Luka asked with a rather incredulous tone
âIt never came up!â Clover retorted
âHow did it never come up?â
âIts cool!â Harriet jumped into the conversation
âIt think its cool tooâ Bow agreed âI always wondered how my paper cuts at school always healed so fastâŚâ
MJ had sat themselves down, hand staying on their head, feeling the strange curve of their forehead with a certain fascination. Nellâs words - said with so much affirmation- did make them feel better about the situation.
The nurse returned, her expression still relatively serious, but calmer as she carried an old, thick book with a rather overly ornate cover in a faded blue.
âYouâre lucky I collect these old thingsâ She commented for a moment, sitting down next to MJ. She flipped through the pages, finding a two-page spread with a plain mask listed on it, and text printed so small that MJ just could not read it. âHere we are.â
Harriet climbed up next to her âWhat's it say? Thatâs a lot of words!â
Nell chuckled a bit at her eagerness âIt is, but... â she hand rested on the book for a moment, and then she lifted it, and the text glowed, lifting and circling around her hand like a ring.
âWhoaâŚ. It's like the unknown from the PokĂŠmon movie!â Bow jumped, causing Nell to laugh more.
âA little, I supposeâ Nell responded, and she looked over at the other two adults, mostly at Clover, whose bewildered stare caused her to laugh again âYou okay there?â
â... How did I not know this about you?â
âNever came up, dear. Donât think too hard about it. You too, âSnatcherââ The woman gave a smirk. Luka cleared his throat. âNowâŚâ
A simple flick of her hand, and the letters were floating around MJâs head, and some of them glowed just a little bit brighter âHmâŚ.. Alrightie, that's a good signâ She snapped, and the letters, very suddenly disappeared as if popping a bubble. âWell, Give until dawn, and then you should be able to take off the mask. If you canât, come to me. I donât work tomorrowâ
âOh⌠Well, that uh, wasnât so bad. Iâll be okay?â
âOf courseâ Nell nodded, shutting the book âIâdâve called the Kagaiâs the moment I let go of your face if I thought otherwiseâ
âThe who?â Hat questioned.
âAnother time, Hattie, another timeâ Nell placated. âNowâŚ.â she exhaled, putting the book on her coffee table and clasping her hands together âI just realized I havenât even said hello to any of youâ
Something about that sentence finally broke the tension, getting a laugh out of Clover and Luka, and a snicker out of MJ.
The next ten minutes consisted of Nell reassuring the group that MJ would be fine, and reiterating that they needed to come to her if the mask did not come off by sunrise.
âThereâs a lot of magic in this that I can sense. So uh, just be careful.â She warned. âI donât know a lot about that, so youâll have to ask Timâ
MJ nodded âUh, thank you, Nellâ
She gave them a kind smile âDonât mention it. Next time you need me though, have Clover send me a message or just call me, alright?â She looked passed them to Harriet, who gave her a sheepish smile.
âGot itâ The transformed barista nodded.
âOh and, donât be too worried about people seeing you. Just say it's a costumeâ She recommended as they walked out with their family waiting just beyond the porch. âHappy Halloween!â She called before abruptly shutting the door
âSoâŚâŚâ Bow started
âCan we go trick or treating now??â Hattie finished.
Luka looked up to MJ, who seemed much calmer than before, despite continuing to lift their hand to their weirdly shaped head.
â.. Yeah, yeah i think we canâ they gave Luka a grin âAnd thanks for getting us the help, Hattieâ MJ reached down and picked her up âWho knew the Dread Pirate Roberts could be such a help!â
The girl giggled before being put back down âThen letâs go!!â
0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0
MJ was initially a bit tittered when they entered the town, but the moment anyone noticed them, the compliments rolled in.
âWow! You look like a spooky zombie!â
âWhat game is that cosplay from?â
âHow did you get the prosthetic to look like that, damn!â
âWow, that is a really cool idea for the Lonely Man!â
MJ was beaming at the semi-undeserved praised as they took the kids from neighborhood to neighborhood, filling their pillow cases close to brimming with so much candy that Luka kept making a face and seemed to be mentally preparing to hide all of it, whispering to Clover and MJ about taking some of the candy so that it wasnât all in his apartment.
âSeriously, all that candy?? Theyâre going to get cavities and I cannot pay for dental work like that.â The father aggressed. MJ just laughed a bit, looking ahead at the two girls who were trying to run ahead to the next house.
And then Bowâs foot caught a crack.
âAh, Bow!â MJ startled, hand reaching out - but there was no way theyâd reach her before she fell-
And then, she just stopped falling, stuck in midair as if floating.. But she wasnât.
Upon closer examination, she was held up by a variety of red strings, connected to MJâs clawed fingers
â... Uhâ
âWhoaaaaâ Hattie gaped âMagic! Cool!â
Bow pulled himself up to a standing position, and MJ put their hand down, the strings disappeared
â.. Thanksâ Bow cleared her throat âThat was really coolâ
âIt kind of was... â They commented, looking down at their hands âIâm gonna be having a heck of a long talk with Tim when he gets back from wherever he isâ
âYeah, definitelyâ Luka nodded in agreement.
Lucky for the group the rest of the night went without incident, with MJ joining Luka at home and the two of them staying up until the sun started showing through the windows.
âReady?â Luka asked him, the being no longer human shaped, as heâd finally reached his limit
âYeah.. I think soâ MJ took in a breath âShe said it can just⌠come off like how I put it onâŚâ
âAlrightâŚ.â Lukaâs voice trailed off as MJ reached their hands up to their face, thumbs by their cheeks, but then - wait! The edge, the mask! They felt it.
Barely bothering to breath, they mentally counted⌠1⌠2⌠3!
they pulled it off and gasped as that icy feeling went through them even faster than last time, trembling and nearly falling over as Luka kept them up with their tail.
âHey, hey! You okay MJ?â
MJ looked up, nodding âYeah, uh, how do I..?â
âYouâre back to a nerd, if that's what youâre askingâ Luka lightly teased
Their hands went back up to their face, and gasped when they felt their regular skin, and their glasses (Where had they gone? Didnât matter)
âOh, thank godâ The tired barista flopped onto their partner, âThat was exhausting. Thank goodness the Horizon is closed todayâŚâ
âHah, ready to sleep?â
âOh, definitelyâ MJ commented, looking down at the mask still in their hand, its smile seeming not nearly as spooky than before.. âHm..â
âWhat?â
â.. Whyâd it choose me, I wonderâ They muttered, sitting up and placing the mask by the window sill âBut⌠weâll see about finding out more, hm?â
â.. Yeah, we willâ Luka confirmed.
MJ gave him a smile, hugging his partner with a slight nuzzle âCome on, we need to sleep. Hattie and Bow-â
âOh, donât remind me. Weâre in for a hell of an afternoonâ Luka groaned, but he was still smiling.
Saying that things were âback to normalâ was never correct with this group, but things were still pretty okay. Maybe better, even.
Moonie figured theyâd just have to wait and see.
