So, can you know a little about someone based on their top 5 fav characters?

My top 5 JJK : Gojo, Sukuna, Megumi, Yuji, and Toji.

My top 5 BNHA : Bakugou, Midoriya, Shigaraki, Endeavor, and Aizawa.

Please, don't hate me, I just love them so much. At the end of the day, it's all just fictional characters, right? Do you think, fictional characters that we like are somehow a little bit of who we are in in real life?

Can I really know a lot about someone based on their favourite characters?

Personally, I would say you can know a little about someone however even that is only based on assumptions and can be inaccurate.

For example just because you like Toji as a character I can't say that you're a deadbeat parent because again liking a character doesn't mean that you're exactly like them but it can sometimes mean that you may relate to the character or just like them for other things like:

Their style

The way their character arc is written

What they bring into the story

Or maybe something a bit more personal

All of these are reasons why someone may like a character or have them be one of their favourites (obviously there are more and these are reasons I listed because they're the ones I think I base my favourite characters on)

Maybe the reason we like certain characters is that we may subconsiously relate to them but that doesn't mean you're exactly like that character.

To clarify, I don't hate you for liking these characters but iam a bit interested as to why you like endeavor? Also Iam a bit intirgued as to why you're interacting with my blog (please don't take this in a rude way!!!) because iam quite upfront at being an anti bakugo and anti enji blog.

For jjk I like all of the characters I do think that some lack development and needed more screentime (megumi needed more screentime in the culling games and last arc) and iam not a huge sukuna fan but I have come to appreciate the way his character is written.

In the end this is my opinion and just because someone has different opinions doesn't mean that your opinion is wrong. Also, I really don't want to dictate how you view things so do take my opinion with a grain of salt

Let's pretend Dabi thought Enji changed, let's pretend that he didn't know that he had another kid after Natsuo and did the exact same thing to Shoto that he did to Touya, but when Dabi does find out, he breaks. All the rage that he felt somehow intensified at the idea of his brother going through the same shit he went through and he doesn't find this out behind closed doors but on the battlefield across from Shoto and Enji. Touya just drops to his knees and cries, screaming about how he should have stayed and saved him, how if he had been better he could have prevented this, how he is sorry, and begs Shoto to forgive him

maybe Shoto dies and Enji doesn't give a fuck, he is so determined to become number one the only thing he can think about is wiping out the villains and claiming that title. Dabi snaps and loses it on Endeavour ultimately killing him and cementing his title as villain BUT afterward, Touya goes looking for Shoto. Finding his body amidst the rubble, he drops to his knees and gently cradles Shoto like he should have done when he was a kid, holding him close and vowing to protect him, but it was too late. He had already lost, already been destroyed by Enji. Touya holds Shoto close, crying and asking him to forgive him, forgive him for letting him suffer, how he should have been a better brother.

I think the Dabi stans got defensive because the chapter has a negative depiction of Endeavor in it and often hard-core Enji stans go after Dabi when he makes their fave look bad. They want to be able to move on but Dabi represents 'the past never dies' so they get mad at the unsympathetic portrayals of their fave and lash out at Dabi. Like stop getting mad that Dabi isn't cartoonishly evil as a child so you can't pin the abuse on him. He is evil now. Let's have fun.

This is a possible cause of the reaction, but I still think it spirals down to the mass insecurity/defensiveness produced by modern fandom purity culture.

I remember being on quizilla/tumblr/fanfiction.net/etc. in 2005-2012 and it wasn't like this, or at least it wasn't this bad. People liked villains/"problematic" characters and it meant nothing about the user's morality. People recognized that (almost) every character served a narrative purpose, and that approving of fictional actions did not translate to condoning real-world violence.

That this understanding has eroded over time is the source of the kind of thing you described. If Endeavor fans get mad that Dabi's past "makes Endeavor look bad," it is because people equate them liking Endeavor with meaning that they, as people, are bad or doing something wrong. If Dabi fans are immediately putting up shields over the new chapter because they think Endeavor fans will attack them, it is because fandom purity culture means ONE of these characters must be "the bad one" and one set of fans must be condemned. The opposition of the characters, and the way they reflect on each other, means some set of fans needs to be "wrong."

I like your last comment. "He is evil now. Let's have fun." I wish fandom still felt like that. Maybe I should start a blog sarcastically applying contemporary purity culture hot takes to like, childhood movie villains to try and show how silly it is to think this way. I.e. "If you like Scar from the Lion King, you approve of familicide/anti-state terror/authoritarian government." Sigh.

I have a question but why do you think so many people are against Dabi/Touya getting a redemption arc or getting saved? Like some are against him being saved but are all down for Shiggy and Toga to be saved? I usually see the same argument and it’s frustrating! Like before I explain myself just want to say I’m not hating on Shiggy or do I feel like he’s any less worth saving but I see these arguments that leave me baffled. So the arguments I have seen before is some people don’t think Dabi/Touya can be redeemed or saved because he has murdered 30+ people, but like Shiggy has probably killed the same amount of not more people so that logic doesn’t really cut it. So why does it make a difference? Like why are people so against Dabi/Touya being saved or redeemed?

Well, I'll start this by saying that Shigaraki has ABSOLUTELY KILLED MORE PEOPLE HOLY SHIT DUDE. It's not even up for debate 😂 that boy flattened two cities with the touch of a hand. Shiggy is my favorite hands down and I'll defend the boy til I die but he has done so much more damage. That's kind of the point to his arc--actually. But anyways~

So with that--I've wondered the same thing you're asking. Why is Touya getting so much hate? Why not redeem him? Well, there's a few reasons that I have seen:

Endeavor- This is the first and foremost reason I can see for Touya having so many antis. This is something I can't grasp or fathom--Why do so many people like Endeavor? Or more like--why do so many people want to see an abuser thrive and his victim be put down? I can understand wanting to see an abuser better himself AND wanting to see the victim thrive, and I can see people wanting the abuser to be put down and the victim to thrive. But to just want the abuser to come out on top? No. Fuck you. (not you anon). So for whatever reason that I cannot fathom, people can't stand the idea of Touya surviving, being saved and redeemed, because it means that Enji has failed (which he already has but--again I really don't understand that side of the fandom and quite frankly I don't want to). So yeah, Endeavor has a lot of ridiculous fans. Hawks- I've already talked about how ridiculous some of the Hawks-stans are. I'm sorry but---they're fucking ridiculous. Some of them need to step away from their computer, go outside, breath some outside air, and shut the fuck up. And let me tell you---we sometimes joke about how the hero-stan side of the fandom lacks critical thinking skills and can't read past the surface--but I want to disagree with to an extent. I can tell you right now, Hawks's stans saw THIS:

And they knew. Seeing Hawks remain in the dark while Dabi walked toward the light. They knew what this was foretelling. And they didn't like it. And then this happened:

And they DEFINITELY did not like that. And then Dabi went and made fried chicken out of him and they found more reason to hate him with all their being. Hawks was kind of set up to die heroically--and even though his arc is pretty bad right now, I still think that at this point that’s the best ending for him. For me, he’s gone too long without even remotely thinking of changing his ideologies, and has been backing Endeavor unquestionably for a bit too long now. It’s just not looking good for him survival-wise. And his stans either SEE this very clearly and are in denial and need something to hate in order to deal with it, OR they really just aren’t looking as deep into the story as they need to. Those panels I used above though honestly tell it all. That being said he very well may survive and not have any consequences from his low point at all--but then he gets thrown in the “BNHA’s shittiest written arcs” pile. But whatever. 

Also--shoutout to the blogs I follow and people I talk to who genuinely LOVE Hawks’s character but like--aren’t ridiculous about it and don’t harass people in their inboxes about it. Who also try to understand his character and not just make him out to be a uwu baby that never did anything wrong. TRUE Hawks-stans if I ever saw em.

Shouto--This is FAR less common than the other two reasons, but I have seen a few people who think this. They love Shouto (understandably--he’s a fluffy boy who needs a hug from his big brother Touya), but they think that Touya is going to be Shouto’s “final boss”, or his mortal enemy or something. Which--idk if they just refuse to read into Shouto’s awesome character on purpose or not, but he is not about to go out there and try to kill his big brother, who he never got to know, who he KNOWS suffered because of their father, and who is very very clearly in physical, mental, and emotional pain. Again--Shouto-stans are a  far less part of the problem. But I’ve seen this misunderstanding of Shouto’s character go around a few times. 

This next one is also big, and kind of falls into the same category with Endeavor up top--but it’s such a huge issue that I’m seeing that it needs its own paragraph: People don’t understand children’s behaviors, abuse, abusive family dynamics, and just child psychology in general. Child psychology is hard to understand--but also very simple. It’s hard as an adult to think back to how black and white the world was when you were a kid. Your parents were your safe place--they were your guardians. Or rather--they were supposed to be. This isn’t always the case though. And the Todoroki family exhibits a lot of realistic aspects of abuse. Even though the Todoroki backstory was very messily written--one thing is absolute: Endeavor emotionally abused his child. The issue is that Shouto’s and Rei’s physical abuse was shown FIRST in the story--and THEN we were shown what really happened with Touya wasn’t so easily identified as abuse (I mean it is--to me, but not to everybody). And people got stuck on comparing Touya’s and Shouto’s childhood instead of viewing them as two completely separate crimes Endeavor committed against his family. And they misunderstand Touya’s behaviors. Peep back at when I said that your parents are supposed to be your safe place--well, for Touya, Enji WAS his safe place, his guardian, his world. And then suddenly all of that disappeared without reason (good reason I mean). And that takes a serious toll on a child. I could honestly go on and on and on about this topic in particular but it’s not necessary for this ask. The point is---people don’t think Touya was actually abused or that he suffered as a child. They seriously lack an understanding when it comes to stuff like that. And they aren’t shy about showing it to the rest of the internet. 

The last reason which I think kind of encompasses all of these reasons: People don’t understand redemption arcs--because they’re not your run of the mill Heroes vs. Villains story. It makes it to where it’s not clearly obvious whose side you should take. I guess people don’t like that---but I love it. Why not take BOTH sides?

You get to have more fun this way imo. You get to watch and see how the two sides come together--rather than just stick to one ideology til the end. I think it’s because people don’t like having their ideals, beliefs, and values challenged. It may be personal for some people--but forgiveness is a touchy subject as well.  And I also think a lot of people very much think that the rules of our reality should exist within fiction. People forget that fiction exists for us to escape reality--I don’t know why this is so easily forgotten. But what’s cool about fictional stories is that everybody can have a happy ending--no matter how many atrocities they committed, people they hurt/killed, because guess what? NOBODY ACTUALLY GOT HURT! 

But anyway---these are the conclusions I’ve come to regarding why Touya has so many haters. Some are legitimate reasons (the last two I listed) and some are just outright ridiculous (the first three I listed). 

I’m not bothered though. I would LIKE to say that when these villain-saving chapters come out I’ll laugh hysterically at all the villain-haters’ reactions---BUT I already blocked almost all of them. 😂

Reasons I hate the BNHA fandom (disclaimer: I haven't interacted with fandom in a while, because I prefer to enjoy things rather than feel spiteful all the time, so I don't know if this still happens):

1. Hating Endeavor and Mineta was, like, a requirement to prove you're a decent person, which made me incredibly salty towards people who hated Endeavor when he started to realize that he fucked up in later manga chapters (i'm a sucker for parents realizing they weren't they were wrong. Wish that happened in reality more often).

1.1. There was this trend of headcanonning Mineta and Endeavor as the only cishets on the show, because they're the Bad Ones. Imagine how this feels when you're a cishet person reading these types of posts. (was it satire? was it a joke? I dunno. It didn't say anywhere on the posts.)

2. I found myself hating Dabi purely out of spite because somehow Enji being an abusive parent was worse the Dabi killing innocent people. (Like, I didn't care at first because they're both fictional, but that kind of logic angered me so much I abandoned logic and became fueled only by spite. Not very good for health.)

3. BNHA is probably the first big fandom I've ever interacted with, so I was not ready to interact with anti's bullshit on such a large scale.

4. "I stg if Horikoshi redeems Tomura I'm- just give him the ending he deserves and kill him!" because we all know that 'Redemption' is Bad Writing, but "Killing A Character Because They're Bad" a timeless masterpiece. (I mean, any trope could be good or bad, but painting them like one of them is obviously the only correct way to do things is a bit stupid.)

5. Ship wars. I didn't get too involved with those because I had an idea of what they were like based on other people's accounts (and because when I didn't like a ship, I blacklisted its tag like a sane person). Still disheartening to hear about because they're just so dumb.

Like, this was my first time being part of a big fandom for an ongoing show and I just. Ended up hating the existence of people. I can't watch BNHA without eventually feeling bad about my feelings on certain characters (I saw my parents in Endeavor and I was so, so happy when his character started changing for the better. And Mineta is just...he's just there to be The Pervert, right? There is no character, so I don't really hate him. I just don't like him either. I don't care for Mineta, basically.)

Now every time I think of a plot for a fic involving the characters and my OCs I just...feel bad. I feel like I can't enjoy the show like I did before, even after I removed myself from fandom completely. Like, I didn't care if other people hated Endeavor for whatever reason; I just hated how apparently I was a bad person because I felt differently about him.

I'm sorry I talk about Endeavor a lot. Not only do I see my parents in him, but also myself if I'm not careful. This is how fiction affects reality for me; when I project on other characters, I see faults in myself, and I acknowledge them, when it could have been difficult for me to do so without this particular character that resonated with me so much. Same with Bakugo; I saw my short-tempered attitude in him and boy oh boy it's not a good look, is it? I can tell you my attitude towards my siblings has improved since I started watching the show in 2017.

Some people might think it's stupid to need a show to realize that I'm doing something wrong, but I don't really care. At least fictional characters can't tell me that I'm irredeemable.

In a nutshell: the BNHA fandom was the first time I witnessed morality being brought into fiction on a large scale, and it wasn't a very pleasant experience. I got out of that experience with bad feelings about myself and an immense hatred toward people.
