These two lines in the movie make me the most mentally unwell.

"I should have been the one to go. You needed your mother more than you needed me."

The amount of layers to this, oh my god. He's blaming himself for being alive. He probably wants to die. He genuinely thinks Adrian needs Emilie more.

And it's been YEARS since Emilie's passed away. Look how tiny Adrian is over there, he only just about comes about the bedpost. Gabriel still looks like he did in the pictures of when Adrian was little. It's been literal years. It could have literally been a full decade ago.

And Gabriel breaks the narrative here. He's supposed to be telling a story, he's supposed to be saying what happened in the past. But at this point, he doesn't say "your mother was taken from us" or anything like that referencing Emilie's passing. The story breaks, he's using a statement. I should have been the one to go. It's completely out of the story, because he isn't saying what he felt then, there's no "I felt like I should have been the one to go". It's just "I should have been."

Because he still thinks this. It's been about a decade, and his opinion, his feelings about this, is still "I should have died". It interrupts his storytelling because of how strongly he feels this way, almost like it's a fact to him.

And then he follows it with "You needed your mother more than you needed me." Again, he says this like it's a fact, like Adrian actually did need his mother more. Because he believes it himself. And this could be because of so many things. It could be because of the way people consider the mother to be the one supposed to care for the children much more than the father, or it could be that Gabriel himself didn't see how much Adrian needed him, or even that Gabriel didn't see himself as useful to Adrian. Especially because he said he should have been the one to die. He's essentially saying he was useless. That he was expendable but Emilie wasn't. He literally is implying he doesn't see any worth in himself regarding being a father.

And then it's not just his grief, it's Adrian's grief that has him desperate to bring Emilie back. He literally doesn't care about himself, he wants his son to be happy and doesn't see himself as able to do that. He loves him to the point of being suicidal and self-sacrificing if it would give Adrian what he need, all while simultaneously not seeing himself as what Adrian needs because he doesn't think he has that much worth regarding him.

#it is one am and i am on my shit #Gabriel agreste has made me so insane about him ever since i first watched the show #like he's unironically been my favourite character. probably because i wasn't able to watch the full level of his bullshit in the show #movie gabriel is exactly the character i wanted/envisioned gabriel to be and the redemption was exactly what i wanted #and i will randomly remember the movie exists and die inside when i remember this scne #and don't get me started on how many times he tightened his grip around adrian when hugging him oh my god #this man was so convinced he couldnt make adrian happy himself he didnt see that Adrian was slowly recovering on his own #and the fact that Adrian wasnt even angry he just understood he knew and he hugged him oh my god #adrian had finally learnt to let go and now he wanted his dad to let go too-and dont get me started on how he calls gabriel dad #also “you have to let her go” maybe its not just Emilie herself he meant but the idea of her and what she meant #like the idea that emilie was perfect emilie is what adrian needed that gabriel is nothing next to her #aughhhhhdhhshsjsjsshsh im going insaneeee #miraculous awakening #miraculous ladybug #miraculoustalesofladybugandcatnoir #miraculous movie #gabriel agreste #adrian agreste #chat noir #hawkmoth #hawk moth

So I wrote this next song a few days before my nineteenth birthday. And, um, back then, I was so terrified of change, and I was especially afraid of growing up. And I'd, like, cry at all my birthday parties as a child. Very, very emo.

Reading a fic that's so well written I wish I could close my eyes and just let the descriptions and atmosphere wash over me, but the dilemma with closing my eyes is, well, I then would not be able to continue reading this fic, now would I.

#fanfiction #fanfic #reading #i don't read longform fic very often but this one is so good wow i'm in awe and clicking next chapter next chapter #the movie it's for I'm not even a particular major fan of itself but I am a fan of the character and the ideas and oh my god #they perfect it to a tee in every way even better than the movie could and yet keep their characterization spot on in line with the og #it's amazing the way they balance the humour and banter with the suspense/tension and drama/horror #and their descriptions are gorgeous/pick out just the right details #their follow-up is more canonical to me as a sequel than the actual official sequel which is wrong in so many ways #and I am in love with their writing style so much my god #i'll say the fic if asked probably will honestly make a rec post for it when I'm done just because wow but here i'm just vague posting #i mean it's 10 yrs old and I've been reading fic for 8-9 yrs and it is truly one of the best I've read in all of that #from all my tags I mean you can labour a guess for the fandom or fic and if you were to guess it wow good job I'd be impressed #but anyway !!! love finding masterpieces I hope this person decided to become an author in those 10 yrs almost *sobs*#I'm gonna say the fic anyway whatever it's From Out the Ocean Risen by Bluestar god it's good (for p/acific r/im)

thinking about how smile (2022) is every traumatised person's worst nightmare. how the message clearly says "your trauma will always win and no matter what you do, you'll swallow it and it'll inhabit your skin forever." how, even if the protagonist had defeated the monster, she would have still lost - the intergenerational trauma has already spread its insidious wings and would survive in the mind of her sister's child. how traumatised people are so often told to just 'suck it up and smile through the pain,' how laughter is the best medicine until it isn't. how misery loves company. and how sometimes healing comes too late too little - you've let the beast grow too strong, it became an intrinsic part of you, your identity.

#the movie was by no means perfect and I know a lot of ppl found it cheesy and stupid #I agree that it could have been improved so easily by e.g. never showing the monster fully instead of that Michael jackson-esque face #the morale of the film was also super grim and demotivating #but imo if analysed as 'the worst case scenario' it holds its ground #And as a somewhat ✨️traumatised✨️ girlie I cannot imagine a scarier situation as when my trauma wins #I'm normally rly good with horror and I make fun of it easily #But there was smth about this one that made me paranoid #I'm still thinking about it even tho I saw it months ago #don't even get me started on the credits agakahsg #that was the paranoia cherry on top #anyways this has nothing to do w fantasy but I had these thoughts in my head for so long #I thought I'd share in case anyone felt similar (if ppl are still watching that movie lmao)#Smile 2022 #Smile movie #horror film #Smile 2022 spoilers #Movies #🌹

I have a big google doc thing where I keep track of media and stuff (putting everything in loosely ranked categories), which is mostly just for my own reference so I know what tv shows I've already seen before, etc. and I never really look back through it, typically just a quick "okay, watched two movie in the past 8 months, need to quickly slap them somewhere in the lists. okay. done. save document. exit". But today I was actually reading through some of the old notes and there are like... MULTIPLE places where my comment is basically "It would have been good if it were about elves" or "I wish there was a fantasy show made in this same style" or "It's well made, but I just keep thinking about how I would like it more if everyone was an elf or was in old 1700s costumes" or etc like...... lol.... Most biased media ranking system on earth blatantly made by someone with an extremely hyperspecific range of narrow interests. It'd be like if a food reviewer only had 5 foods they actually liked, so they'd just go to a pizza place and be like "eh, the pizza was okay, but I just think it would be better if it was cereal instead. :/ ...2 out of 10"

#Which.. I mean... Some people seem to project their own personal preferences and get really emotionally #defensive if you say you didn't like something - as if the fact that they DO like it is some Objective Truth or something rather than just #opinion/preference based. I can still easily say ''this is well made/well written/acted/good in a technical sense/has a lot of #points of appeal that most people would be drawn to/etc'' and admit that it's a GOOD show probably. I just PERSONALLY think its #bad because my tastes are very narrow. Imagine how great it would be if the PJO show is successful and gets the Harry Potter treatment where we get to see these kids grow up throughout the show!

a few days ago i (re)watched the 25th anniversary concert of les misérables and. oh god. i forgot how much this musical did éponine dirty

#partly javert too but éponine is the clearer victim #of simplifying complex characters into more easily lovable (or villainous in javert's case) archetypes #so the audience can root or despise them accordingly #(i think cocciante's nddp is also guilty of this but imo there this adaptation choice makes more sense and is better executed)#say what you want about the 2012 movie and you'd probably be right... but at least they tried and partially succeded in giving éponine back #her complex moral ambiguity with not giving cosette's letter to marius and selfishly goading him into a sorta murder/suicide plan #which more or less is what happens in the book #(javert is also allowed to be more than a caricatural villain. i mean... russell crowe's singing is. Not Great #but at least the script show the character's many layers. or it attempts to #nvm that i don't even consider javert a villain. he's 100% an antagojist but far from the main villain of the story #he's both victim and perpetrator. the law and society at large are the villains here. he's actually a good cop... which is the point!)#éponine in the book is a multilayered bordering on grey and easily the most complex female character of the whole book #but god. in the musical she's just there pining for marius and being all Saint Éponine of Saint Michel #it's insufferable. i mean i still like her but she's TOO perfect. i wouldn't have had such an issue with it if i didn't read the book #.... probably. but damn we were robbed. les mis miniseries with actually accurate depictions of the characters/the plot in general when???#(preferably made by someone who *understands* the book. tyvm)#having said that i still love the musical to pieces. the music is great the songs are beautiful the story is touching #and the epilogue makes me uglycry every damn time. but i think we really missed a chance with éponine ngl #val speaks #txt

sigh someone on twitter extolled the virtues of furiosa and said it was better than fury road. I just saw furiosa. they are wrong.

#the brilliant thing about MMFD was how it needed no backstory.#it required no explanation of who these people were or why they wanted what they wanted #that story gripped you by the throat and pulled you along for the ride and by god you took it #bleh. also I didn't really care for the numbered parts of the story that communicated the passage of time #I guess that's where the “saga” came in but I do think one of my favorite parts of MMFD was that...#it was a contained storyline! there were clearly so many other parts/facets of that world we didn't see #but we didn't need to see them becasue that wasnt the story that film was telling #and I feel like ... I dunno. MMFD was perfect. furiosa was not perfect. furiosa was not needed?#we already knew enough from MMFD about why furiosa had wound up as an imperator #seeing the full story I genuinely don't feel like I gained anything new about her and her character #everything we watch her become (or even begin as) in furiosa... all of it is apparent in MMFD #idk this movie felt extraneous. bummer!#good news is i was really worried about ATJ playing furiosa but she did fine. i have no complaints about her!#anyways anyone who wants to discuss come hit me up in the comments or reblogs or askbox whatever #I wish to dig into this lol #man that tweet got my hopes up. but i did not have the reaction to this that i wanted to have #when i saw MMFD in theaters it was a religious experience. that movie rewired my brain.
