My Short Review of Honkai: Star Rail after ~2 Weeks

Hi!! This is gonna be my first post here.

If you’re a gacha games observer, Genshin/HI3 player or general Mihoyo enjoyer you are most likely already know that they just released a new game, that is Honkai: Star Rail. I prereg this game and made my account on the first day, and this is my loose review about the game so far. Please note other gacha games I’m currently play daily are Fate/Grand Order and Genshin Impact. I also tried Arknights for some months so maybe there will be comparison to them.

Combat: 7.5/10

I don’t like turn-based system for the God’s sake (looking at you, FGO) but the way they have AUTO really escalated the rate for me. The turn-based here honestly more fun than I thought!

Art: 8/10

OK. As expected

Music: 8/10

What should I critic from Hoyo-Mix

Exploration: 7/10

Please keep in mind this isn’t an exploration-focused game like Genshin. It does, however has funni descriptions about items, reminds me of 2D exploration games (something like Undertale).

Story: 7/10

I’ll be honest I play this just as a ‘gacha addict’ outlet and don’t really pay attention to the story, but imo this one’s harder to digest than Genshin, maybe HI3 player can understand better though.

Characters: 7/10

Not very much attachment too, heheh;; Unlike Genshin where I was very attached to Venti after 3 seconds in the game. But the MC is a menace of society, real rate is THE RULES ARE MEANT TO BE BROKEN/10.

Also they have “chatrooms”!! This is very cool, because I think they can keep any character relevant with this.

P. S. They REALLY need to add more battle voicelines. You’ll go crazy listen to “the rules--” everytime you turn up the volume.

Worldbuilding: 7/10

I’m not much a fan of their worldbuilding concept tbh, I think “planet” as a chapter’s setting is too massive, so many aspects about it left unpolished (one nation/planet isn’t very believable to me). But maybe I just don’t understand well.

Grinding: 9/10

AUTO mode is gamechanger. You also can change a relic’s main stat once/patch. Honestly this is the one that can make me linger around longer in this game. GI and FGO both aren’t this forgiving in time spent on farming :’D

Also unlike Arknights, u don’t need three stars or something to start AUTO your way out.

Endgame: 9/10

NGL, this game has better endgame content than Genshin. A LOT. It has something called “Stimulation Universe”. I think it’s similar to Arknights’ Annihilation that reset every week and earn rewards based on points. So rejoice if you’re strategy games enjoyer and like to play around with character builds, this game is good for you.

Gacha: 5/10

Why even bother. Just go with your starter characters.

UI/UX: 7/10

Dear Mihoyo: SKIP and LOG button WHEN??!!

Overall enjoyment: 7.8/10

Yeah weird numbers, but this is my overall, subjective rate. This won’t be my main game but since they’re not as grindy as my other games I think I can keep up by just playing casually. The minimal amount of grind also helped in increasing enjoyment in the overall strategy gameplay.

Unlike when u play Arknights where you have to massively build so many characters with so limited items and pretty hard stages (even for farming for early player) or Genshin with their chaotic artifacts farming..or FGO with their horrendous amount of doing the same 3-turns farming manually. If I had to go through things like that again here, I’ll drop the game immediately.

If Star Rail was published before Genshin I doubt I’ll ever try it. Back then the only gacha game that can keep me for so long was only FGO (Since 2017, dear God) because I was soooo invested with their story and characters despite I have a massive hatred with their gameplay (lol).

I often got HI3 ads on Youtube and I thought their visual is cool. But the game itself never interest me, because the playable characters are like 99% waifu so no, I prefer to have pretty balanced amount of dudes and chicks. Then in late 2020 Genshin was released, and I’m like... this is the one... the one I’ve been waiting for!!!!

I may write other long essays about why I was drawn to Genshin very much. And I was right, it was the only game that can pull me out from my FGO exclusivity, and made me realize that HI3 was not just a mere “waifu” game, and they give faith for me about HSR that was still in the beta back then.

Tl;dr Honkai: Star Rail is good. Don’t worry.

i don’t play sims 4 enough to justify buying the cottage living expansion when it comes out but i kinda really want cottage living

#ill obviously wait for a 50% off sale tho like i am patient i just think i'd have a lot of fun?#i was playing the sims this arvo and having a good time but i always lose focus bc i hate building and hate making more than 1 outfit?#so the gallery should be what i use but also i hate the gallery! but i mean the latest expansions have gamechanger houses?#so they'd be at least better and maybe if i had a pretty cottage living house i wouldn't feel the need to change it?#bc an actually good builder would make it vs me or the sims team making it lol #BUT i always feel bad when i buy a new expansion pack bc like...... the sims as a whole is so expensive??? and i don't want to support that #but also i like fun expansion packs..... it's really very tricky #tbh i should just buy the sims 3 again bc i used to love that and played it LOADS whereas i've never achieved that w/ sims 4 #my post tag

I know this has already probably been brought up time and time again but I was rewatching 5 (because it’s my beloved) and “Then why do you need Amanda in the game?” in the context of Jigsquad is making me crazy. Also… Hoffman’s character is at its best here tbh why did they do him like that in 3D LOL 😭

oh no literally...it's something that kief and i have discussed a lot but like. the line itself doesn't change at all in jigsquad but the meaning behind it absolutely does, because now it's hoffman being annoyed that john is so willing to put amanda's in harm's way again for the sake of the game. and he isn't even aware at this point that what he feels for the others is concern/love because he's so out of touch with his emotions (those realisations don't happen until the aftermath of the denlon/rigg/etc games) but he DOES know he's angry with john for it. amanda is so devoted to john and to mark it feel like he's using that devotion to his advantage. it's that big brother protective instinct coming back from where he buried it after he lost angie.

(nerve gas house in jigsquad is just. a big gamechanger for amanda at least. the daniel of it all, especially since he doesn't turn her in afterwards + lawrence and adam taking care of her later because the needle pit fucked her up more than she was expecting, because she never expected to end up in there at all. just...contrasting how john "cares" for her vs how others do. and she doesn't even know that hoffman takes issue with her being put there!)

another hoffman line wrt amanda that has huge context changes in jigsquad is when he tells john that "amanda will fail you" right before lynn's test. because he's not setting amanda up for her downfall. but he has tuned into the fact that the events of the past year and a half - saving adam and john's response to it, nerve gas house, adam's very presence, how dangerous the night is going to be for amanda specifically given that she's unmasked - have planted enough seeds of doubt in amanda's mind, and she's going to break free of john's hold on her heart eventually. she's not the brutal game master that john wants her to be, and she's never going to be that person. amanda may not know it yet, but one day she will fail john, and it'll be the best thing that ever happened to her. and hoffman knows it and he's not above threatening john with this knowledge.

and well. it's that very same night that amanda chooses to save lynn's life instead of john's. she fails him, and even though she's stricken with guilt and grief and anger and heartbreak, she's going to be glad that she did.

hi! saw your last anon and sorry if this is annoying, but just wanted to ask u a question. i don’t know anything about d20 (assuming it’s like a d&d game) but i did watch all the free game changer episodes on yt and i’m lowkey obsessed and want more. is d20 the same kind of vibe, assuming it’s the same people? for someone who isn’t and has never played d&d would you reccommend starting d20? i kinda don’t want to pay for dropout, so maybe i’ll start with that :) have a nice day!

not an annoying question don't worry!! in fact i feel like i have to apologize in turn because i already know i'm going to be incapable of being normal about answering this question lol but me being verbose as hell on main, what else is new, etc. etc.

Re: whether d20 has a similar vibe to game changer -

so i'd say you're right in that d20 involves many of the people that are featured on game changer since they're both produced by collegehumor/dropout. as you might know Brennan Lee Mulligan who appears pretty often on game changer is the main DM for d20, and since d20 is an anthology show the casts rotate out every season but one of the most frequently recurring casts incudes Zac Oyama, Ally Beardsley, and Lou Wilson who are also pretty frequent guests of game changer [the others were also involved with Collegehumor at some point, can't remember if they've been on gc tho]. collegehumor folks sometimes appear in other seasons as well - for example rekha shenkar and lily du have been in multiple d20 seasons, jess ross and mike trapp have also featured, and there's even one season that's oops all collegehumor folks called Mice and Murder which is basically holmesian style turn of the century murder mystery but everyone is an anthropomorphized animal [dropout exclusive but the first ep is on the d20 yt channel]. so if you vibe with the humor and the personalities of the people who feature a lot on game changer, it's likely you will vibe with the humor and tone of d20 too!

that said, given that game changer is styled after a traditional competitive game show and d20 is an actual play show where people play tabletop rpgs together they are very different in the sense of genre. d20, while largely improvised [which believe me is a fact that will probably be hard to believe when watching it but is entirely true], is very much a collaborative storytelling effort between the people involved and makes very concerted efforts to present a tight and cohesive narrative through their seasons. so d20 is great if you like fictional narratives and fun and colorful characters, but if you want more traditionally unscripted content like gamechanger i recommend checking out:

dirty laundry [which is actually a spin-off of a gamechanger episode; hosted by Lily Du, first ep available on the CH yt channel]

make some noise [unfortunately i think right now all the make some noise eps are also dropout exclusive, here i have linked to the trailer, but it is another spinoff based on this honestly iconic game changer ep wherein Josh Ruben, Brennan Lee Mulligan, and Zac Oyama make weird sounds at each other and it's the funniest thing in the world]

Re: would i recommend d20 for someone who has no experience with d&d -

short answer: yes absolutely 100%.

long answer: why do i so enthusiastically recommend d20 for people who have never played dnd? because i am a people who has never played dnd and d20 is one of my favorite shows ever! tbh i do think i am kind of biased as d20 is really the only actual play show i've ever been able to get into and i'm sure there are plenty of other shows out there that work for other people [if you're a podcast person for example you have tons of good options, i however am Not] but there are a number of reasons why I personally enjoy d20 as an actual play show:

I often struggle with other actual play shows because of how long and meandering they are. I think this is more of a personal preference thing because even when reading/watching more traditional forms of media i always tend to prefer tighter narratives with a clear ending in mind [e.g a 3 season show with a good finale is more compelling to me than an ongoing 10 season show with no ending in sight] but because d20 is an anthology show and each season is more or less a self-contained story aside from the few sequels i find it much easier to keep my attention on the episodes. to be sure the eps are still quite long, most ranging from 1.5-2 hours, but brennan + the other dms they feature on d20 do a really good job of keeping the pace moving while still giving the players freedom to explore the world and make their own narrative choices [which i think is one big appeal actual play shows has over other forms of media, the improvised and collaborative nature of the storytelling versus something that's already been fully scripted beforehand].

another thing i struggle with is how cumbersome dnd combat can be, personally i don't think it's the most accessible especially for people who have no ttrpg experience but d20's combat actually works pretty well for me because 1. they plan their combats before the season starts and especially in the earlier seasons of d20 they stuck pretty strictly to alternating between roleplay versus combat episodes so it's easier for me when i know kind of what to expect and 2. because they plan their combats in advance they are able to build INCREDIBLE custom battle sets with custom minis [shout out to Rick Perry!] and for me the visuals really help me keep my attention on the combat versus when combat is more theater of the mind [which to be clear does sometimes still happen in d20]. Tbh i still think combat can be a little clunky especially in the earlier seasons of d20 but i think the show has always gone to a lot of effort to create really creative and engaging combats for both the players and the audience and as it's gone on they've only gotten better at achieving this

in that vein i think the fact that d20 is 1. entirely filmed and 2. edited very well is VERY helpful for someone like me who has traditionally struggled with podcasts because the lack of visual context makes it hard to stay focused. as far as the editing goes i know some people prefer more of a livestream feel but just for me personally having the editing and the different camera angles and the sound cues and the music [d20 is really good at picking royalty free music for their soundtracks btw may i just say] gives me something more concrete to focus on and keeps it more visually interesting. and i do feel that they still make an effort to preserve the more natural/organic feel of ttrpgs by limiting their cuts story wise and focusing a lot on player reactions in the moment so for me it kind of hits the best of both worlds!

personally i think the choice for d20 to cast a lot of talented improv comedians is fucking inspired, especially when the show is so comedy-oriented. improv comedians are good at making bold choices on their feet, crafting rich characters while improvising their dialogue on the spot, and collaborating with each other, which are all skills that are very helpful for an actual play show context and everyone they cast on d20 is SO talented at all of these things. there are some players on d20 who also have little to no experience with dnd [notably Ally Beardsley has only ever officially played dnd on camera for d20; Rekha Shenkar and Mike Trapp in Escape From the Bloodkeep were also very new to dnd at the time] which on the one hand i think helps audience members like me who are inexperienced with dnd knowing some of the players are in the same boat but also they tend to make some of the wildest most out of the box choices as a result of being new to the game. so i think ultimately it's just a really fun combination and it's so much fun to watch in action!

and just a few more reasons why I consider d20 a favorite in a more general sense:

I mean Brennan Lee Mulligan as d20's main DM is a HUGE draw of d20 in my opinion. like if you were already a fan of him from game changer or other college humor content i think you will especially appreciate him in d20 because he is absolutely in his element here. actually last year i made a ppt for my friends about why i like d20 so much so here is a relevant excerpt:

i want to emphasize that d20 is a comedy-oriented show so tonally comedy is what it will prioritize. however i also want to emphasize that this does not mean it pulls any punches with the emotional depths it's able to reach. the themes and the worlds and the characters are SO rich and complex and compelling and I think i have experienced basically every human emotion and then some while watching this show. i also think it's incredibly character driven and does an amazing job of prioritizing character and relationship development and player agency, which is one of my favorite things to see in any kind of show!

and conceptually i just think it's so much fucking fun! it being an anthology show means there is something in here for everyone but i have enjoyed every season i have watched immensely [which is all of them except for one!] and have found it remarkably easy to become invested in every single one. you want to know what it would be like if dnd took place in a john hughes style teenage coming of age movie? or what if lord of the rings was about the bad guys but also it’s a workplace comedy? or how about an urban fantasy story set in modern day new york with a secret sixth borough hidden away in the world of dreams? you can have it all and more from d20! and this is just the seasons that are available on yt for FREE there are so many other cool and fun stories and worlds and dms to engage with!!!

piri! i love deja vu though. piri was the song that got me into them and deja vu was my first comeback with them, so i have an attachment to both, but i would have to say piri, yeah

oh shit really? uhh idk if i can do that but... i mean i gotta say siyeon right? her voice *is* dreamcatcher to me. her voice defines their sound more than anything else, even more than their rock concept. like for real, her voice is more integral to the feel of a dreamcatcher song than the guitars or sort of dark vibe. well, her voice brings the dark vibe a lot of the time, honestly. after that i’d say jiu cause her voice is the total opposite, she has the voice you would least associate with a concept like this, but that serves to add a lot of range to their sound too. her voice is so vividly bright and cheerful... so, dreamcatcher’s dark concepts are defined by siyeon for me, and dreamcatcher’s lively personality and energy onstage and offstage are defined by jiu for me. those first lines of “wake up”? iconic, full of energy, aaaaaa i love her. after that i guess i’d say yoohyeon cause she’s the lead vocalist lol. and then... about the same for the rest. i dont have an order from then on. they’re one of the groups where i think it’s the easiest to tell which member is singing just from audio alone, all seven of them have distinct vocal characters. the only two that i sometimes mix up (again, just based on audio only) are sua and gahyeon. or dami when she sings lol

Dreamcatcher Notes or Vlogs

i tend to watch dreamcatcher notes more because there’s more going on a lot of the time, cause they’re like behind the scenes stuff. also.... there are some members whose vlogs im more likely to watch right away than others lol... though im working my way through all of them little by little so i’ll see all of them eventually. if jiu posts a vlog it’s immediate haha i’m on it immediately

What’s your favourite era of each member?

oh wow okay this is a hard one... here goes!

jiu - already we’ve hit a really difficult one lmao. does blue/purple Jiu count since it was technically post-deja vu? i guess purple is now gonna be immortalized in their new comeback huh? i think actually i’ll say fly high. i think that’s the obvious choice but... idk, she doesnt have a bad era lol

sua - hmmm.... im having trouble remembering which eras were which for certain members... i know she had reddish purplish hair for piri right? i cant remember some of them though... like she didnt have as many drastically different looks as someone like siyeon or dami. maybe i’ll say good night though, purely because of her rap haha. EDIT: oh shit i looked at photos from the eras after all, and oh my god i forgot about you and i... nevermind lol scratch that, it’s you and i. those designs she had in her hair were super cool

siyeon - deja vu, specifically the part where she had short blue hair. amazing. flawless. legendary. stories will be told of those days

handong - her ‘what’ era is probably her most popular, but actually im gonna say deja vu. i liked her short blonde hair, it looks really good on her. the first thing that came to mind is her with that hair and those purple/black deja vu outfits... im thinking of some photos from some fansigns... yeah.

yoohyeon - deja vu again lol, sorry about the recency bias haha. this is the era she viciously and savagely bias wrecked me. especially during those fanmeetings where she had a ponytail and was wearing a suit... oh my god lol she knew exactly what she was doing. they all know exactly how good they look in suits and they subject us to it as often as they can lol. her grey hair during you and i is iconic too, and the red she had during good night... but i think im gonna stick with my answer

dami - piri!!!!!!! oh my god!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh my god??? oh my god!!!! especially post-piri with her black hair??? fucuuucuckckckckckkckkkkkk dude she’s so handsome i could CRY. this current era we’re about to get is looking like a gamechanger too though... her hair’s kinda wavy and that look on her face in that first teaser... and her floral shirt... damn dude. honorable mention to you and i cause of the baton trick she’s famous for lol

gahyeon - now with gahyeon its actually pretty hard for me to say, she has had the same or similar hair in every comeback pretty much, right? hmmm. the things that immediately come to mind are good night and piri and i’m not sure why. actually i might be thinking of chase me? OH NEVERMIND okay i caved and i looked at photos from different eras and i forgot that she had green in her hair during fly high, okay yeah nevermind lol it’s fly high

What do you hope to see on their albums in the future?

what do you mean? like in terms of types of songs? uhhh.. idk.. most of the stuff i would say to this is stuff that i have no doubt will actually come. i want more bangers like piri and what, i want more edm stuff like sleepwalking and silent night, but yeah i’m sure we’ll get that. i guess what i’ll say is... more songs with involvement from the members. either in terms of composition or even just lyrics. though i like the composers and lyricists they have a lot! i’ll also say if nothing else, then a song choreographed at least in part by the members would be amazing. idk if it’ll happen for a title track, but if sua choreographs one of their edm bsides or something, and they perform it live on music shows, fuck...

What would you say to each member if you didn't have to worry about a time limit?

each member individually??? that’s too time consuming woirjgeoiwrgew but i do have individual answers for all of them probably lol. especially yoohyeon, i wanna talk to her about languages. i’ll just say to all of them how much i appreciate them and how they arent boxed in by typical idol conventions, but they also arent boxed in as outside them either. like, they’re not an anti-kpop-group, they’re not the complete antithesis, they like being a kpop group and they like other kpop groups so they would never want to be that. i like how much fun they have, i like how close they are, i like how they treat their fans, i think if the fandom did something really awful or went too far i like to think they would feel comfortable letting us know. hopefully, anyway. more than most other kpop groups i’m aware of, it’s easy to find them in videos and vlives and stuff not being totally in idol-mode and just being people, and friends with their members. im not criticizing other groups, cause if i was in their position, i think i would have a hard time not being “on” when on camera, even if it’s just a vlive. maybe it’s because they’ve known each other for a lot longer than a lot of other current-gen groups, and they’re older than many of their current-gen peers too. they feel very earnest, they’re not trying to hide. im sure there are aspects to them that we dont know about and will never know about, and i hope that’s the case cause i hope they’re able to maintain some privacy in this job, but it’s not hard to tell when someone is being genuine and when someone isn’t, and i get a very genuine vibe from them a lot of the time. i’m glad they are who they are, they’re really influential and inspirational to me. i.... also might wanna mention their support for lgbt people, though i would want to talk to them about that in private because it’s personal for me and risky for them and i know how shitty that situation is, especially since i know that they care and would be a lot more vocal if they could be. and they’re one of the most vocal groups about it already! i just want to thank them.

Is there a song you think is underappreciated?

hmmm. i’m not really sure which are and which arent, i actually think insomnias do a good job appreciating everything haha.

Prequel okay now we’re getting somewhere.... Wake Up or Sleepwalking.... fuck.... Sleepwalking is actually probably the song that really converted me into a fan cause its the first time i really heard their range. after listening to Piri and You and I and maybe Chase Me, i decided to just watch all their music videos in order, and the playlist i used included the special clip mvs too, so hearing Sleepwalking for the first time right after Fly High was wild, it blew me away and i listened to it like 8 times in a row haha. Wake Up has been rising up my rankings a ton recently but i think i still have to go with Sleepwalking

Since you finished the A vs B arc, did you find any of the class B quirks that were introduced particularly cool/dumb (or just any thoughts about them in general you feel like sharing)?

here you go ladies and gents all 20 class 1-B quirks ranked from worst to best oh snap let’s do it

20. Toadette - “Mushroom” - no. just no. no one asked for this. I hate it please stop.

19. Rin - “Scales” - versatile but boring. definitely a useful hero skill for sure but not very cinematic.

18. Sen - “Gyrate” - honestly I was torn between rating this even lower because it makes no fucking sense, or rating it much higher because it makes no fucking sense lol. I don’t understand how this kid doesn’t have more broken bones than Deku.

17. Pony - “Horn Cannon” - this is basically a severely nerfed version of Mighty Wings. not too bad I guess and she utilizes it well enough but I was hoping for more after seeing all of the insane things her classmates are capable of.

16. Kamakiri - “Razor Sharp” - this one is cool but since we’d already seen this quirk in a previous arc (that mafia dude who fought Kirishima) there wasn’t really anything too novel about it.

15. Tetsutetsu - “Steel” - nothing against you Tetsu, you are an angel and you have an amazing quirk and were able to hold your own against the strongest fucking kid in the grade. it’s just that we’re already well-acquainted with your quirk and you suffer from Only Does One Thing syndrome which makes your fights a bit less interesting than some of these other fresh new quirks. you have staying power though.

14. Awase - “Weld” - look I fucking love Awase’s quirk, actually. and he was even able to take out Bakugou, albeit very briefly. and he also saved Momo’s life with said quirk and Bakugou’s as well and he’s amazing. the only reason he’s not up higher though is because he needs to have a lot of spare parts and shit on hand in order to really be combat-capable. but I still love him though.

13. Kendou - “Big Fist” - there isn’t really much to this quirk and it should probably be lower tbh but there’s just something about it that I fucking love lol. just seeing her slap the shit out of people with her giant fucking hands. and she’s also incredibly strong and this honestly isn’t a quirk to take lightly at all.

12. Tokage - “Lizard Tail Splitter” - this one is actually pretty damn good. it’s amazing for recon, but the fact that she has regenerative abilities is even more impressive. there are all kinds of ways to utilize this in a fight. I like it. it’s just unfortunately she was pitted against Bakugou’s unstoppable team of badasses lol.

11. Shishida - “Beast” - what really makes this quirk a gamechanger for me is the fact that he can adjust his size in a split-second. when he pulled that shit I was like “!!!!” and it makes him incredibly mobile and difficult to pin down in addition to being strong as hell.

and now we get to our top ten! god these are all fucking amazing quirks and it’s really hard to rank them honestly but here goes.

10. Bondo - “Cemedine” - this is like the ultimate capture quirk. the fact that he can adjust the speed at which it dries is even better and means it can be utilized for defense as well as offense. for a pro hero, it’s hard to beat a quirk like this which can quickly and effectively neutralize an opponent in a non-lethal manner.

9. Shiozaki - “Vine” - offensive and defensive, and also great for capturing opponents and even for limited recon. there’s a reason she made it so far into the tournament.

8. Kuroiro - “Black” - I love this quirk. it’s not super-powerful but it gives him a ton of versatility and makes him a god of stealth. and the quirk itself is extremely original. and he’s already gotten strong enough to control the objects he merges with, so with more practice who knows what he’ll be capable of.

7. Shouda - “Twin Impact” - so this quirk is incredibly powerful, and the thing about it is that the stronger your opponent is, the more powerful the quirk can potentially be. Shouda could potentially be capable of taking out Noumu-level opponents with more practice and very clever use. the only reason it’s not even higher up is because the quirk is limited to offense as far as I can see, so it lacks the versatility of some of the other quirks.

6. Honenuki - “Softening” - what’s really impressive about this one isn’t just the quirk itself, but how effectively Honenuki utilizes it. he’s become incredibly good at laying out traps and using it to neutralize opponents as strong as Iida and freaking Todoroki. he was practically a one-man army during his fight.

5. Manga - “Comic” - THIS QUIRK IS AMAZING. it’s so much fun to watch and it can do so many different things! I love it. with the right user this could be a godmode-level quirk.

4. Kodai - “Size” - this quirk is amazing and we only saw it utilized in a very limited way during her fight, but it has the potential to be incredibly versatile if she gets a bit more creative. the thing is that she’s able to alter the size of anything non-living to make it either bigger or smaller. so that means anything is a potential weapon, and the ability to shrink stuff means she could clear a path through a pile of rubble, bring a building down by shrinking one of its supports, easily carry supplies, etc. there are so many possibilities with this quirk and I’d like to see more of it.

3. Yanagi - “Poltergeist” - it’s a fucking telekinesis quirk. ‘nuff said, I think. even with her seemingly not being able to move living things (although is this confirmed?) and nerfed so that she can’t move objects over a certain weight, this is still insanely powerful. I had been waiting so long for a fucking TK quirk and I was not disappointed (well maybe a little disappointed, but only because we didn’t get to see it in action much).

2. Tsuburaba - “Solid Air” - listen this may well be in my top five quirks. this quirk kicks ass. you could build an entire videogame solely around this mechanic (there probably already is one tbh). he can create solid platforms to get around anywhere. he can create barriers for defense or offense. the offensive barriers are fucking soundproof and strong enough that they can’t be broken without the use of heavy tools or something equally strong. and he’s just going to keep on getting stronger, and as his lung capacity increases he’ll be able to increase the size of his barriers as well. Tsubu could be a main character if he wanted. I love this quirk and it’s amazing.

1. Monoma - “Copy” - last but not least, the most versatile quirk of them all! this is basically All for One Jr. it’s incredibly powerful, and the fact that he’s able to control the techniques near-perfectly mere seconds after copying them is a huge factor as well. but what really makes this a beast quirk is the potential for combining quirks. even though he can’t activate more than one at a time, the fact that he can keep one activated and then switch to another one means there are a ton of potential combinations he can try out. and I’m not clear on whether his limit is three quirks or four, but he’s definitely increased his time limit for sure, which means he’s able to operate on his own for longer periods of time. I doubt that many hero battles are going to last longer than ten minutes, so that effectively eliminates his most glaring weakness (the fact that he can’t operate alone and needs to have at least one partner/teammate around). plus I’m sure he could just borrow quirks from bystanders or even from his opponents themselves in a pinch. I really want to see more Monoma fights and combinations, tbh, because the sky is really the limit for him.

so those are my thoughts on the class 1-B quirks! basically with the exception of Toadette, they are all pretty damn great. with a little more experience most of these guys are going to be pretty hard to beat.
