How to read like a writer

If you’ve ever followed any Writergram accounts on Instagram or Twitter, I guess you’d have heard this advice—read like a writer.

People can’t stop glazing about how it’s one of the best pieces of advice any beginning writer could get, how it’s one of the most important skills to study prose and create your own, and all that. But, as you could’ve guessed, there’s a lot of unpacking to be done here.

What does it even mean to read like a writer? How’s it different from reading like a reader, or just for fun? And, how the frick do you even read like a writer?

I had to rant about something, and that’s the topic I’ve chosen today. So, here’s my two-cents on it.

#01 - The Basics

So, what does it mean to read like a writer?

I believe that reading like a writer is a form of reading prose where you’re conscious of the artistic decisions the author makes throughout the piece. For example, if there’s a high-stakes action scene, probably a fight scene or something, and you notice that the average length of sentences has suddenly become shorter and punchier.

Firstly, you need to understand that there’s a lot of such artistic decisions that writers take while writing a piece. And, every writer does that. These decisions are primarily related to writing-style, but are also focused on the story-structure, character-development, themes, and more.

For clarity, let’s divide them into two types of decisions—micro-level decisions and macro-level decisions. Micro-level decisions would include the writing-style, scene-descriptions, and all that stuff. Primarily, stuff that you can notice on the very page itself. It’d relate to the sentences instead of the plot. Refer to the example above again—that’s a form of micro-level decision.

Macro-level decision would be an artistic decision where you need to complete the whole, or a big chunk, of the piece to point them out. Such macro-level decisions would relate to the plot instead of individual sentences. For example, the decisions they’ve made regarding the plot, characters, and the underlying themes of the prose.

I tried my best to make the distinction as clear as possible. I hope you guys understand them clearly.

Anyway, each type of artistic decision would need to be checked in a different manner, y’know. To analyze macro-level artistic decisions, you’d need to probably finish the whole novel and do some research and brainstorming related to the themes of the story and the way the author discussed those said themes in their work.

It takes some time to get into the head-space to analyze the story and its themes. And, you might need to recap the story in some form or the other, y’know. At least, I need a little recap. Because generally, it takes me months to complete a novel or TV series. Or manga series. Or anime. Or anything else I need to analyze.

… And that’s because I start a lot of stuff before I finish the previous ones. Not gonna lie, I’m reading around four-five novels at the moment, a couple of which are web-novels on RR, along with three manga series. Please don't ask me why I do that, I hate it myself.

Anyway, now onto the second type: the micro-level artistic decisions. This is where you need to be really conscious while reading the work. In fact, I believe that these forms of decisions are what people generally mean when they talk about reading like a writer.

Micro-level artistic decisions, like I said earlier, include sentence-structures and writing-style of the author. And yeah, it’s really easy to slip out.

I’d like to refer to my favorite lit-fic The Road, by Cormac McCarthy, as an example. Reading the work, you’d see that the style feels… barren. The scene-descriptions are a pain to read; the vocabulary is just too hard. But, vocabulary becomes a lot easier during dialogues. That’s because the scenes are a pain to see, while the characters are losing their power to communicate effectively. I talk about it in detail in a previous blog:

But, man, maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be. Maybe that’s why McCarthy wrote the descriptions in this way—to symbolize the mental stress that the characters go through as they experience this world, this form of reality that they were not meant to be in.

And maybe the novel is so lacking in narrations because the characters’ minds have gone numb. They’re forgetting language. With almost zero human interaction most of the time, they are forgetting how to think and interact in words. You lose the skills you don’t really use anymore, y’know. And these guys are so obviously depressed, so they don’t think about the world. They are used to the sad reality they live in. No point in complaining how bad the food is if that’s all you’re gonna eat all your life.

So, a scarcity of narrations tell you a lot about the story and its characters. It reflects something, it symbolizes something.

Also, if you read about Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, you’d observe how the author’s writing-style is often bland and indifferent. That says something about the characters and the plot too—it keeps the readers detached from the story, forcing them to adopt a third-person POV where they can constantly judge the plot and the characters.

Understanding the micro-level artistic decisions also include understanding the different nuances in different authors’ style. For example, sometimes you’d see that authors write scene-transitions like this,

We talked it through, and decided that it’d be the best to continue the conversation once we’re in the safe vicinity of this house. School was dangerous for such serious conversations—what if somebody hears us out and report us to the police?

So, we shut up as we boarded the bus, and twenty minutes later, we were pulling through his house’s driveway. We both stepped outside and…

Personally, I’m not a big fan of such transitions. I’d rather use three asterisks instead, like I do with my blogs here.

When to read like a writer and when not?

Yeah, that can be a mess. You don't need to have the writer's eye open every single time you’re reading something.

Personally, I use a trick. I only read like a writer when I feel that the piece is really different from the type of prose I generally consume, y’know. For example, I’m reading Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief. The blurb says that the novel is narrated by Death, which is something quite interesting. Apparently, Death appears in the story as a character, acting as a third-person narrator.

However, the story is not third-person omniscient POV. Quite the opposite, actually, for we see the narration alternating between the thoughts of the protagonist and the all-knowing omniscient narrator Death, which makes the writing-style of the novel quite interesting.

So I read the book as a writer—all the way, I’m figuring out how the author masterfully blended both third-person limited and third-person omniscient narrative styles and used the best of both worlds to fully utilize both of them and paint such an amazing writing-style. I don't think I could ever pull that off, to be brutally honest. It’s just awesome what Zusak has pulled off in the prose.

Anyway, I derailed too much. The main point I was tryna make is that The Book Thief is different from what I usually consume—third-person limited POV web-novels. So, I do have to read like a writer. I probably won’t be reading like a writer if I was reading yet another RR web-novel or fantasy light-novel, y’know.

Another factor you might want to consider is if you like the prose or not. If you believe that you really love the novel and want to write something like it, you better study it a little. After all, you’d be writing what’s interesting to you.

A third factor: classics. If the prose is a classic, you might learn something from it. I mean, there must be some reason it’s stood the test of time, y’know, and people are still reading it. Yeah, sometimes, the style just seems outdated, and you likely won't be adapting it. But there are some gems in it too. The Great Gatsby is a really good novel to learn first-person POV.

… And that reminds me, I still haven’t finished The Great Gatsby either. Even though I’ve been reading it for more than a year.

#03 - Conclusion

All of this might feel a little overwhelming for you guys. I can understand that.

I mean, that’s just too much information to think about, y’know. And you might not be able to catch up on most of them. Heck, you might not be able to understand any nuances between different authors’ styles at all!

But, just don't give up, pal. It’s kinda tough out here, yeah, but that’s alright. Keep reading, keep practicing it out. You’d get there.

Keep reading and keep writing. That’s all it takes to become a great writer. But, doing both your reading and writing mindfully is what matters the most.

I fricking love the characters' designs.

Jimmy looks like your average joe, sleep-deprived and exhausted from working a 9 to 5, however there's subtly but clearly something off about him. He looks like this everyman character made to be relatable but as the game goes on and his awful actions come to light he becomes a subversion on this trope.

Anya is obviously inspired by Shelley Duvall, all soft and pale and big doe eyes, like a scared wounded deer, reflective of her demeanor and what she went through. I hc that she'd be very beautiful but often make those stupid skrungly faces and ugly-cry.

Daisuke's design radiates chill vibes, with the the flowery, colorful, almost summer-holiday-like motifs, which also reflects his demeanor and coping mechanisms. He's so extra with the funky patterns and the dyed hair and accessories.

Swansea is this mean ol' gruffy guy with a permanent frown, which is a mask to hide that deep down he has color, hobbies and hopes, but writes himself off as nothing more than a hopeless drunkard. He's got those stylish sneakers on and collecting them is something he actually enjoys just for the sake of it.

Pre-crash Curly has this 80s movie star look going on, with them blue eyes and golden locks and wide shoulders and he would almost look too idealised if not for the exhaustion that reflects on his face. It goes along with this model leader role he failed to maintain and adds to Jimmy's feeling of inferiority. It's also a painful contrast to what's become of him after the crash.

I could yap on and on about it. The designs are just,, so simple but effective and fit the characters so well.

Did Kai ever scare the Ninja more than Nya ? This would be the moment where they realize that "Yes, they are related"

Normally Kai is chill going and doesn't scare any of the enemies or ninjas. However there are moments when he can give you chills. Exactly three.

1. When one of his siblings is in danger.

When Nya or Lloyd are in danger, would be capured or something. Kai can turn into true devil. There's no mercy left and he'll do anything to protect them. Literally when his siblings are in danger his big brother sense turns on and Kai can become a terrifying monster. Let's say that tose who he considers as a danger or enemies should start writting thier testament

Kai thinking: *Ok, where are my cards to poker..?*

[Nya/Lloyd gets kidnapped]

Kai: *big older borther mood activated*

2. When you don't eat your meal or eat properly in general.

During his childhood Kai didn't eat properly for most of the time. He couldn't afford enough food for him and his sister. So Kai often eat irregularly or not at all. Moreover the variety of meals was limited, so both Smiths often ended up eating mostly rice daily.

Due to this today Kai is not picky eater, but to this day rice disgusts him and he doesn't eat it. Literally rice makes him vomit.

It had a big inpact on his phisical and mental health and that's why Kai makes sure that people that he cares about eat healthy.

Kai will make sure that everyone fihinsh their meal and eat in time.

Normally there's no problem with that. Everyone eats normally (especially Cole who takes second meal)

But there are some expections:

Jay & Nya: *have been working really hard on some kind of project for 4 hours*

Kai comes to the workshop: Hey, guys come here the dinner is ready! Everyone eats now!

Jay: Just a minute-

Nya: We'll eat later. Now we need to stay forcused.

Kai: You said that a hour ago.

Nya: We don't have time for that!

Jay: We're this close to finish this-!

Kai: ....

Kai goes to them and unexpecetedly grabs them by the collar of their shirts: I said eat your dinner.

Kai: NOW.

Nya & Jay: *terrified*

Nya who knows what will come next if she doesn't come: Ok-ok I'll eat- *immediately gets up*

Jay who is still lightly terrified: *stays to finish project, because he thinks that was only adderessed to Nya*

Kai: *rapidly drags Jay out for the chair*

Jay: What the-!?

Kai: I said everyone.

Jay: *immediately goes to dinner*

3. Wet Monday.

After Kai became the master of water and got used to his power, let's say that Wet Monday became his favourite day in the year.

But why are people afraid of him?

Let's just say that on the Wet Monday Kai gets a little too excited.

On this day kai will splash water on everyone. No matter the gender, age.. And it's not a normal amout of water like a cup, or even a bucket of water. No no no- In the best outcome the amount of water will be as from the bathtub.

This day is a war. This is not for the weak.

There is no mercy. No for his siblings, no for his boyfriend or Zane who's even a nindriod.

Master Wu is the only one who is able to function normally at home, since Kai always has trouble attacking him. (Because well.. that's their Sensei)

Kai treats everyone like enemies or more likely like targets. He won't miss any opportunity and will attact anyone whose near him. And if he notices that someone didn't get shot by his wave, then he'll hunt them like a prey.

Seriously, if it weren't for Master Wu's prohibition, then Kai would make a fricking tsunami-

Cole: *looks at the callendar and sees what Wet Monday is comming soon*

Cole: ....

Cole takes out his phone and calls his dad: Hey, dad, you wouldn't mind if I drop by for a week right??

Hello helloooo friend! Hi! I just wanted to say that I'll be going around and asking people about QSMP characters to avoid mischaracterization of said characters (in analysis, fics, and just overall fan interpretations). So if you're cool with it, can I ask you about the French streamers?

Like, can you tell me the mischaracterization you often see regarding their characters and how they actually are? I mean, ANY facts about them would be very very cool to know! I love all of them and I would really like to know more about them since I can't really watch everyone, ya kno?

Yes I would love to :D ! But also, keep in mind, I'm not immune to a bit of mischaracterization (that's how you write that right ?), sometimes I probably do a little bit, though I try my best not to. I have to admit, I don't see a lot, or just little things, and mostly from the english side of the community, cause over here with the french we are a really small part of the overall fandom, so I don't have a lot of interactions, AND it's our first (ever) smp like that (semi rp etc...), we never had that over here in France, it's a new thing both for us and the ccs, so we are getting our footing. But here we go I do have some things I can say : (wrote a fricking novel holy)

q!Baghera Jones : I see a lot of people characterize her as this hyper competent investigator that knows everything etc... In a way she is, she is a good investigator, and is always eager to solve the mysteries of the island ; What people miss most of the time is that she is also (it's not mutually exclusive) a Goofball : She sings randomly, she walks on mines and jumps off buildings willingly for the lols, some people say she witholds information, most of the time she actually just Forgor. Something that people do get most of the time is that she genuinely is really empathetic : She loves Walter Bob, two days ago she talked about how Cucurucho may be manipulated, she is worried about Quackity, about Cellbit, Foolish, Jaiden etc... And outside of petty rivalry (mostly with Forever, BBH, Etoiles, and a bit Cellbit) she is not a vengeful person at all. She is very understanding. Oh and almost forgot : She is surprisingly insightful ; She guessed what was happening to Cellbit as one of the firsts, she immediatly figured Gegg out the first day she met Slime, ElQuackity is VERY obviously another person than Quackity at first glance etc...

q!Etoiles : There was for some time a bit of mischaracterization in the way people saw him as a bloodthirsty killing machine, though it is fading steadily as we speak ; He is a really nice person that lifts up others, gift them things whenever he can, cares about the eggs, and is always reactive when it comes to saving or helping others. Also, he is a badass in the eyes of everyone (ccs and fandom) but people have a way to write that in fics that doesn't really match him : They write a badass and dark character that is mostly silent and cool ; Etoiles is NOT that (he is badass yes but not much the rest), he SAYS he is that, that he is "dark, and broody, and mysterious", but the guy is always cracking jokes, about others, about himself, he is very self-aware of his problems (social and health related) and likes to joke about it because "it puts smiles on the faces of people" (his way of cheering people up most of the time : "You are not useless, you put smiles on my and the people's faces, and that wonderful"). The moments that CAN be a bit dark is when he is asking for a fight ; most of the time it's goofy, but then there is moments like the dinner party when the codes revealed themselves, where he will be saying while everyone panics "Yeah... Yeah.. FINALLY ! FINALLY !!" and you realise he is not to be trifled with. He aslo tends to blame himself when something wrong happens ; to him, HE is the one that misplayed, that made a mistake.

q!Aypierre : Some people could see him as a relatively chill dude ; he talks calmly, never screams and very rarely raises his voice, but he is NOT chill : He is the most gremlin of the french, his favorite past-time in all the smps he's been in is pranking and breaking the servers : Two days ago in his 24 hour stream, he broke in the federation base three times, exploded a bunch of stuff in there, tortured Foolish alongside BBH, summoned lightning to make Foosh and BBH believe Gegg is still alive in front of his infinite Gegg generator, rickrolled Cucurucho etc... He is a every ingenuous guy with ways to build factories of everything. Most people, out of the french, would fear Etoiles because he is always begging for a fight, and fought and won against the code several times, but he is a nice guy, who they probably SHOULD fear, is Aypierre, this guy can be EVIL at times ; He loves contracts and deals, and using those against the others. He is not all evil though. He does care about Pomme, the french, and is willing to help others when they need him, though he likes to make exchanges.

q!Antoine Daniel : Antoine is probably the hardest to write or get when you are not used to him. He has such a way of speaking and a weird twisted humor that to someone not french, and not watching his streams regularly, it's REAL hard to get him right. He is an apreciator of dark humor and cynicism ; Joking about Bobby in front of Pomme is an example, though he is starting to be more compassionate about the eggs than he was at the beginning of his journey on the smp. Probably because of one of my posts and some others, a lot of people see him as incredibly paranoïd, and for a time he was, though he said himself (both in and out of character) that it was starting to get better because people came talked to him about it, there IS still remains though. What's interesting is that he can be both paranoïd, AND incredibly insightful : His takes are either the rambling of a madman, or scarily on point. Though he is rarely willing to help others (both because of his next to level 0 skills in minecraft and general air of "I don't care"), he is always on alarm and willing to help when it comes to the eggs, multiple times he ironically is one of the most reactive ones when it comes to realise there is danger or a problem for the eggs ; Though he is relatively self-centered, he is very compassionate and attentive of the eggs, with Pomme potentially being the person he trusts most. (everytime he acts aloof and cynical on his stream, to then immediatly worry about Pomme's well-being warms my heart.)

Dice could be a sort of assistant of Puzzles or works beside and they both get along as time goes on. I ship these guys soo badly so might make a fanart of them if ya'll are interested. I’m making a Spooky Month AU based off of one of my favorite Goosebumps books

anyway for the whole starting point of this, here’s if Skid, Pump, Ross, Roy and Robert attended King Jellyjam’s Sports Camp (and also featuring some skin complexion headcanons as well cause why not heh)

Extra info :

Lila let Skid go to Camp Jellyjam after he saw a sign-up poster for it in town. Not sure why, but she eventually let him go there. Pump kinda just tagged along with Skid-

Skid is always wearing something skeleton related and Pump is always wearing pumpkin related lol

They stay as close to each other as possible, even entering the same competitions just to be with each other

Buddy (the head counselor, you can see him in multiple of my previous posts lol) thinks they’re slightly annoying, but they’re super energetic. He also thinks they should probably try to actually compete instead of them entering the same competitions just so they can be with each other, and letting each other win-

I’m not sure if they would ever meet King Jellyjam in person, but if they did, they would either think he’s super cool, or they would be too distracted by how bad he smells to care about his ‘coolness’-

Skid and Pump had tried to befriend Alicia multiple times, but she’s a bit shy. They were honestly worried about her after she disappeared, but they were happy to see her after everyone was saved.

Speaking of that, the boys were honestly a bit suspicious about the whole thing, especially after Alicia went missing. They weren’t really able to figure it out though before the whole secret came out.

Okay, first off, Ross. Obviously, of course Jaune let him go-

Ross, despite being a bit of an introvert and also the slight age gap, had made good acquaintances with Elliot

I kinda headcanon Ross liking music, and a lot of bands, so I wanted to give him a band shirt. Problem : I don’t really have any knowledge on any bands, so I just picked my sister’s favorite band-

Also yes, he sharpied a replica of Aaron’s tattoo on his arm-

Buddy thinks Ross could be more sociable, and less nervous when he’s competing, but he thinks he’s kinda cool. Ross doesn’t mind Buddy, but he does think he’s kinda creepy sometimes cause of how happy he is, and his signature grin

Okay, time for Roy. I’m not sure why in the world Carmen or Richard would let him go to a sport’s camp- maybe they saw how ‘expensive’ the playing fields, equipment and dorms were and thought he deserved to go to ‘experience luxury’ lmao

Roy is extremely competitive, despite not really being a sport’s guy. He always tries to win, probably because of an ego thing, or to de-stress, idk

Roy kinda made ‘friends’ with Jeff. (well it was more of a frenemy kind of thing, y’know, them both kinda being bullies and them being competitive)

I didn’t know what outfit to give him honestly, idk what a ‘elegant summer look’ even would be, so I just gave him the outfit from the Mother’s Day 2024 drawing but with the sleeves rolled up lol

Buddy doesn’t like him all too much, thinks he’s incredibly rude, but he does like how competitive he is, and tries to be as friendly as he can to him

Now, as you can see, Roy got 6 King Coins. That means he can go onto the Winner’s Walk :D (and also be a slave for King Jellyjam but let’s talk about that later)

Ross and Robert were extremely happy for him, but they started to worry once they realized he went missing the next day. They practically interrogated Buddy on it, until they gave up, figuring he went home

Roy didn’t go home, though. He was busy cleaning King JJ before Wendy came to save everyone. Luckily, he didn’t die, but that incident might carry with him, along with all his other trauma (poor boy why did I pick you to be the one to suffer ☹️)

A n y w a y, Robert is last. He’s just a little silly :3

He really does like everything- but his personal favorite sports were baseball, soccer, and the Marbles Tournaments

He likes talking about aliens, and other cool things in the spare time he’s not playing sports (which is literally almost never)

Robert also made nice acquaintances with Elliot

Robert misses his siblings tho, he wishes he could at least talk to them :(

He could also been seen with Ross and Roy a lot when they’re not busy with sports

These three were all roommates, along with some kid named Joe. Who’s Joe? JOE MA-

Buddy quite likes Robert, they both think each other is cool

Since the two medias take place in completely different time periods (assuming the book’s events take place the same year it was released, it would be 1995), I wasn’t sure what to do, but I just picked SM’s time period, around 2012

I don’t think it’ll change too much, honestly, just with the whole pay phones not being there. I don’t think they’ll allow cellphones at Camp Jellyjam anyway- (everybody’s ages will probably remain the same too)

oh my guy is also very much someone who gets very hyperfixated on stuff, chances are once u become close enough, both of you would start rambling/infodumping onto each other and would accidentally get into whatever the other one is hyperfixated on lmfao. like one day you'd come up to him and just ramble for 15 mins about some historical event and next day he would call you at 2am and go "GIRL THATS NOT EVEN THE FULL STORY GUESS WHAT I LEARNT ABOUT THAT" and viceversa.

since both of you are on the quieter side, chances are you might not speak every single day, but whenever you do speak, you could spend hours doing nothing but that. he's a very pleasant person to have long talks with and he would always be super interested in whatever you talk to him about

he's dumb as bricks when it comes to school stuff and struggles to study as much as you– but since you get good grades, he would come to you for help. which would lead to VERY chaotic but thoroughly enjoyable studying sessions lol.

he would always be so eager to play volleyball with you, regardless of how good you are. if you're on a lower level than him, he would tease you about it but also be very patient and explain everything to you a thousand times if need be (in his own way of course, which would probably include at least a few insults each time, but it's all in good nature)

he would very much enjoy just watching you draw/paint in silence or while listening to music. he finds it fascinating & very calming

he would go ABSOLUTELY WILD if you ever paint/draw a portrait of him. im talking like "weak to the knees, teary eyes & needs at least 1-5 business days to process it" type of emotional

2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

Kipperlilly - I LOVE her little passive aggressive jabs at the Bad Kids even before she outwardly lost her cool at the cafeteria. Calling them the Photosynthekids because she knows Adaine doesn't like the name, looking Directly At Them when saying her platform is based on fairness, that 30 seconds of silence at the food trucks when Kristin asks how she could be studying if the rogue teacher found her. My girl is fighting TOOTH AND NAIL to reign in her rage and keep a relatively pleasant, put-together outward appearance and even then she can't resist doing these petty, immature little things to get under their skin she's so funny (Goro Akechi-core I'll never shut up abt it).

Ruben - I like how Genuine and earnest he defaults to being when he doesn't have an excuse to be rageful. The Wanda Childa bits where he seems genuinely into her and kind of nervous around her, saying dorky one-liners that he thinks will impress her ("stay chill-da"), saying he's getting mobbed by autographs when he and Wanda are the only people on the bus, the fact that he said "frick" instead of fuck. Just based off of these I really get the impression that he isn't the most experienced with being an angry person and so much of how he acts is performance because he's now Expected to be mad.

Buddy - HE'S SO FUNNY "It's why I never hit anybody. I raise my hand, and sometimes a spell comes out and obliterates people" WHAT DO YOU MEANNNN THATS INSANE. I think I like the description of him at the party best, "positive but deeply judgmental", my guy will say the most snarky shit but with an upbeat positive tone, "You and what god?".

Mary Ann - Honestly just the fact that she's stayed the same since freshman year with her pink sweatshirt and Tamagotchi. My girl knows what she likes and is STICKING with it which is DEEPLY relatable. Plus I just love the concept of a tiny 3-foot tall barbarian with a squishmallow collection lmaoo

Ivy - Ivy we haven't been given a lot to work with but I LOVE the interaction she has with Fabian at the party, "Your ping-pong table's fucked up. Legs are different lengths, yeah?" "Fuck you." "Is that a threat?". I wish Ivy and Fabian got more chances to interact thanks to this scene alone. Plus her jabs at Oisin are very fun I love the dynamic those two have.

Oisin - I know I've said this before but "You didn't see the storm coming? Must not be a very good Oracle." SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!! HE ATE HE'S SO SNARKY!!!! Bro went OUT OF HIS WAY with a 3rd level spell slot to send that to Adaine he's so DRAMATIC I hope Adaine gets to punch him.

Lucy - This is more about the concept of Lucy than who she is because we still don't rly know a lot abt her canon personality, but her entire situation is just the perfect tragedy, the way all her friends came back Wrong but she "stuck to her guns", the clearly fond way some of them look back on her, plus the entire scene in the clearing after Frosty Faire where the Bad Kids discover her and Yolanda's body. I thought the entire scene of seeing a reflection of the two of them in the lake was very beautiful.

Honestly Talbot is such an interesting character that often gets overlooked. When he was introduced in season 1 I never could have imagined what happened in season 5. I honestly thought he'd only show up in season 1. But then he just kept showing up all the fricking time. Obviously I didn't like him when he was first showed up, dude was a trigger-happy military guy opposing Coulson. And he keeps showing up kind of in the same style, but slowly starting to respect Coulson and S.H.I.E.L.D. And he never stopped being abrasive, honestly I would hate to be around him in real life. But at some point, I can't even remember when, he wasn't such a nuisance. Annoying, yes. Evil, no. And openly against Hydra. Somewhere along the line it became obvious that Talbot would help. Probably have a few choice words and squid-related insults for Hydra. But it was clear he respected Coulson and saw S.H.I.E.L.D. as the best option to deal with Hydra and other threats. Then season 5 happened. Granted, not the best writing. I feel it didn't do him justice. Just made him go crazy and misguided villain vibe. I'm certainly not against him being Graviton, I can see how Talbot could be misguided and trigger-happy and be a problem while being insanely powerful. Doesn't help that he was shot in the head before, previously brainwashed by Hydra, and that the gravitonium was full of others' consciousnesses. I just think it was rushed. Under different circumstances I think it could have worked more smoothly. But back in season 1 I didn't think I'd ever be okay with this guy. Or that I'd be concerned when everything went to heck in season 5. They did a great job with Talbot in season 1-4, less so in season 5 but also season 5 had a lot of weird writing for everyone so I'd say it's less of a reflection on Talbot's writing as it is for that specific season's writing. Sorry I'm probably not making any sense, life has been insane lately and I'm writing this in the tiny bit of time I have while sleep deprived. But I think Talbot is an interesting character.

Summary: This was just supposed to be a once-in-a-while cat sitting gig to get Tony back on his feet. It wasn't supposed to be weeks on end at an amazing apartment, it wasn't supposed to be mysterious locked rooms, it wasn't supposed to be masked men in the middle of the night. And it definitely wasn't supposed to be falling head over heels in love.

Reasons why I love it: This fic is so goddamn sweet, my god. I love Charlie the cat, she's the cutest, and Steve and Tony flirting like crazy while remaining utterly oblivious to the others' feelings is fantastic. Definitely check this one out if you haven't, it's a joy to read!

Reasons why I love it: Yeees, give me that Hallmark movie realness! I don't know what it is about Actor AUs that just makes me so happy, but this one definitely gives me those warm fuzzies. Neb proves once again that she's a fantastic writer, and the way Tony and Steve's relationship develops is amazing. I love this one so much, you absolutely have to read it!

Reasons why I love it: I didn't mean to have two Christmas related fics in this list, but they're both so good, I couldn't help myself. The dialogue in this is so fricking good, it makes the whole thing feel like a movie. The identity porn is great, and oh my god, Tony getting jealous is the cutest thing ever. I love everything about this fic, and you should definitely read it!

Reasons why I love it: If I were a teacher, I would give this fic full marks for everything. Dialogue, pacing, plot, characterization – it's all perfect. A lot of times when it comes to misunderstandings you have to suspend a lot of disbelief, but here it feels so natural that I completely bought it. This fic is amazing, and if you haven't already, I hope you give it a shot!

Hermit Horror Week 2023

Day one: Game Mechanics

Summary: Bdubs wants to sleep. Something deep and primal tells him no.

It is getting late.

And, if you know anything about dear old Bdubs, you’d know sleep is his thing! Wake at nine, sleep at nine. He is the Sleep Master, the Sleep King, the Sleep Champion, even. If someone has an issue with something sleep related, say, insomnia or sleep paralysis or pain in the morning, they come to him. He won’t lie and say sleeping is always easy – sometimes getting in the right mood for rest is really hard! – but he has a whole bunch of tricks just for that. There’s never been a night where he hasn’t gotten a wink of sleep.

Until now.

It’s stupid, there’s nothing wrong. Well, there should be nothing wrong. He’s tried everything, but nope, no effect. He’s so tired it’s a struggle to keep his eyes open for longer than a few seconds, but as soon as he begins to drift off, a stinging, intangible fear grips him and jerks him awake. He feels almost sick – his body begging him for rest and not allowing a drop of it. Time feels weird. He stares at the clock on his bedside, his vision so blurry he can’t make anything out. Hours or minutes could have passed and he’d be none the wiser.

He does have a – well, calling it a theory makes it sound more concrete than it is, it’s really more of a hunch. He has a hunch what’s behind all this: Etho. The only thing that’s changed about his Monolith from last night to now, is Etho moving into his basement. Hah, what would Cleo think of that? She’d probably make some joke about how, of course he’d be staying up late thinking about Etho. Very fricking funny. Bdubs suspects it’s actually some evil redstone thing Etho has done, a weird prank. What better to mess with Bdubs with other than his favourite thing - sleep? Well, he’ll be having words.

It takes him a further five minutes to convince himself to get up, and as soon as he does, he regrets it. His legs can hardly carry him and the world won’t stop spinning. He heaves himself across the room to the stairs, just now beginning to understand the difficulty of his mission. Thankfully, the further he gets from the bed, the better he feels. But, it still isn’t easy.

He shuffles down the steps, one foot at a time. He must be several flights lower by now, surely? He didn’t bring any torches with him and he can hardly see a thing. The sky outside is dark and foggy and endlessly black. As he meanders his way past some crates (in a very inconvenient but very aesthetically pleasing location), he thinks. Knowing all things to know about sleep, he’s picked up some legends. One says that it’s physically impossible to sleep when you’re near something unsafe – something your animal brain recognises as bad, that is, like a natural predator. It’s stupid. Etho isn’t a scary beast, he’s just an insanely cool guy! Bdubs doesn’t even know if it’s true, he’s never had the chance to test it, y’know, being smart enough not to fall asleep when next to a creeper or whatever. Besides, there are some stupid legends out there. Like the myth you swallow seven spiders a year in your sleep. But, he can’t get the idea out of his mind. He wants to. He dreads to think about the questions it raises. Yet, deep in his gut, he knows it’s right. He can’t sleep because his body is protecting him; there’s danger lurking nearby.

And nearby he goes! He opens the door to the basement. He did some great work making it atmospheric, he thinks, though right now the atmosphere really isn’t helping. He sees Etho on the staircase down, the one with the big drop either side.

Etho is standing there, illuminated in the candlelight, his dark clothes soaking up the shadow and his pale skin appearing ghostly, pure chiaroscuro. He’s staring right at Bdubs, or, staring at the place Bdubs happens to be standing. His eyes are wide and glistening.

“Hey, um, Etho,” Bdubs stumbles over his words, “How’s it going?”

“Hmm?” Etho snaps to attention, “Oh hey Bdubs! What are you doing up so late? Have you given up on being the Sleep King?”

Etho’s familiar mannerisms soothe him, instantly, and he feels a tension ebb from his shoulders that he didn’t even know was there. He’s about to reply to Etho, with some false annoyance and silly voice, but, something’s still not right. Etho stands there, same place. He hasn’t moved. Bdubs thinks about how much taller Etho is than him, and how he’s probably a faster runner than he is, and how he could probably definitely take Bdubs down in a fight. He doesn’t know why he’s thinking about that. Etho is staring at him. One of his eyes are red, which is such a weird detail to think about. Etho got it blinded somehow – for the same reason he has a scar – and later replaced it with a redstone eye of his own design. Bdubs knows this. Redstone glows in the dark. The eye is glowing. It’s watching him.

It's been too long, he should have replied by now. With everything to say, he settles on, “I, uh, can’t sleep.”

“Alright,” Etho doesn’t blink, “And?”

“Well, I don’t know! I thought you might have something to do with it! It only started when you got here,” he’s back to playing with his usual fake temper. His voice is loud and echoes through the chamber.

“Not anything I’m doing purposefully,” Etho replies.

“Hmmph,” Bdubs feels like he should be saying more. He just really wants to leave, “Alright then.”

Etho doesn’t say anything as Bdubs turns around. Bdubs doesn’t hear him make any noises, either. Before he knows it, he’s back in his room. He can’t even remember the trudging climb back up the stairs. He should. Time feels weird.

He lays back in bed. If he could, he’d be sleeping over at someone else’s house tonight but, well, he’s the only one that’s bothered to build a bedroom. Most of the hermits are insomniacs. Including Etho, he supposes, who was standing there in the dead of night doing… What was he doing? It doesn’t matter. The point is, Bdubs can’t sleep, and he still doesn’t know why.

Suddenly the idea of Detective/Investigator Sirius Black came to my mind

Smeelling power 10/10 helps in his investigations ALOT and nobody would know anything if he decides to follow someone.... Like who get's suspicious of a dog??

Literally this man was born to be a detective (well in my au atleast) he'd leave no opportunity to chase down the criminal or suspect EVER

Also there are plenty of points on why he should be a crime investigator or detection

That one good looking, sassy and witty detective YES YES YES YES

BUT ALSO WHAT IF

He has a rivals but sometimes teams up together kinda relationship with his detective brother Regulus???

That guy would have a whole wall dedicated to criminals and their info (ohh please we know he loves moodboards)

But also Regulus loses to Sirius most of the time, unless they are teaming up for the same thing ofcourse
