at the end of the day riot grrrl wouldn't exist without bell hooks and Poly Styrene. their work was foundational not only in terms of feminist philosophy from the both of them, but in the case of Poly Styrene, her performance style as a feminist punk artist.

it just kills me that a movement that has been so thoroughly (and justly) associated with White Feminism was built off the work of these brilliant black feminists with every intent to be intersectional in theory. but in practice it only created space for white women and actively alienated nonwhite women ESPECIALLY if they spoke up about it. the fact that the sistah grrrl riots even had to be created by and for black women because they were so alienated both from the general white male population of hardcore/punk spaces AND the riot grrrl spaces made in response makes me crazy!!!

riot grrrl did a lot in terms of making feminist education and art more accessible to young women and teaching young women how to organize for their rights but in terms of intersectionality riot grrrl failed big time. went the way of 2nd wave white feminism with little resistance. the road to hell is paved with good intentions and all that.

Alright I'll bite for the Homestuck ship asks o.o (I barely have any understanding of Homestuck so I'm just picking things I recognize asdhklf): Favourite canon ship? Favourite rare ship? Favorite rare ship: I don't know if I ship anything rare... Tavris isn't as popular as some others for either of them..? And I guess I do ship it now there's no other word for my condition. They're terrible together it compels me. Forever holding out for pitch tavris but unfortunately kismesis requires some level of mutuality and well. Tavros and Vriska just are not on an equal standing in any capacity ever. So there's that

Do you have any crack ships? As a rule of thumb no, never. It doesn't even cross my mind to ship characters without some catalyst in canon. Like straight up the thought doesn't occur to me. There needs to be something there to catch my attention and if there is something there in canon it isn't a crack ship by definition;;

Do you self-ship with any character? I got over my crush on Eridan now I'm stuck with this bitch of a boyfriend who I just can't stop pitying in the platonic, human sense of the word. Might fuck around and adopt him next

Do you use the quadrants in real life? WISH I COULD real life kismesis especially could be interesting tbh, but only if it's done PROPERLY and not the watered down misinterpreted version you know. Kismesis isn't just enemies to lovers it isn't hatefucking it isn't even just a love-hate relationship all of these definitions have some truth to them but are reductive. I thought I'm the only one who thought von Frantz's motives for wanting to help Ellen were kinda shady 😭. I've seen people say he was the only one who understood her, but idk. Did he really? He was pretty obsessed with the occult and proving his theories right, it seemed like Ellen gave him the opportunity to prove he's not crazy. Sure he was nice to her, but he was also very convinced that he's right

Thomas deserves to kick his ass lol

What kills me over and over when I think about it is the last look Ellen gives von Franz as they part ways in the alley. He has been so kind to her. He believes her, he knows she is not mad, he had her unbound from the bed and gushes about how she could have been a priestess in another life, how she is everyone's salvation...

...and she sheds a single tear as she pins up a smile for him. As she has been pinning up smiles for so long. For everyone.

Here is someone who she must count as an ally--he swears to keep Thomas away on the wild goose chase for the sarcophagus, giving her time to beckon and trick Orlok--and he has just thrust on her shoulders an implicit expectation that she submit herself to willing violation and murder-suicide to save everyone.

"I believe you 100% bestie! You're so cool and powerful! Let the monster drink and hump you to death so you can save the day about it! You go grrrl!"

It's just. Nauseating on so many levels.

The friends who didn't understand her plight entirely or otherwise belittled her worries, who stood by (granted, outdated and coarse) science rather than magic, would at least have put their foot down about Ellen being put on the sacrificial altar. Sievers himself calls von Franz mad for enabling it.

Her Thomas, who knew the truth of Orlok, and who had witnessed firsthand how Nosferatu could be eliminated with no more than an iron stake, was sabotaged from even making the attempt and kept in the dark about Ellen's sacrifice, because it was obvious he would do all he could to prevent it. He almost died just trying to get home to her, knowing Orlok was coming.

Because von Franz has his occult theories and has decided Ellen's sacrifice is the only way~ Von Franz, her oh so understanding comrade. Giving her the thumbs up to die for the Greater Good. Go team.

Thomas, wait until von Franz puts the cat down and make him choke on a lilac bouquet. It's fine, Thomas, it's for the Greater Good

She didn't understand much but Marcia had read the English translation so she got the basics from her

I saw a headcanon once that Cherry listens to heavy metal, and yes, only it's grrrl riot

They joined the distribution of pamphlets about birth control and such on college campuses once they went

I feel like Cherry would have a stereotypically feminine calling to something like teaching little kids and feel really guilty about it, like she should like something that defies the status quo

Marcia would study biochemistry and work in research

Although, looking at things realistically, I think their feminism would be very heavily centered on white, upper-class women like themselves and they wouldn't really consider WOC or lower class women

UNTIL

One day

At a meeting in a feminist bookstore or whatever (my research was light Wikipedia reading before bed, don't take me too seriously)

They're in a semi neutral location

It's mostly white but across classes

They start talking about birth control and there's this black greaser girl who starts telling them all about Native American and African American and Latina women being sterilised without their knowledge by the same advances they were advocating for

She says they need to do something about that too

But when she said that, she interrupted Cherry and Cherry's proud and hot-headed and started fighting back against her and things escalated and they both stalked off

Marcia got kinda mad on Cherry's behalf because loyalty but also she could see the other girl's point, especially because things like that were so seldom talked about in white (=most well-known) feminist spaces

So they talk it over a while, Marcia and Cherry, and they realise that the other girl had a point and they really had no idea because their version of feminism has been so white-centred

And they're kinda wishing they could apologise and maybe work on something together

And there she is, closing her locker

So they go over to her and apologise and all that good person shit and the girl seems a bit skeptical at first but warms up to them eventually and then suddenly they realise they haven't introduced themselves and the other girl says,

"Nice to meet you, I'm Evie."
