I remember the Winter discourse starting all the way back in v3 and I thought it was silly then. But in v7 & 8 it was just straigth up nonsense. Bad, she clearly was on his side so they don't see why would she call him out for his choices, even though she herself said more than once in v7 that she didn't actually agree with what he was doing but stayed by his side out of loyalty and because she hoped he could be reasoned with, just like Marrow did.

Winter becomes the Winter Maiden? Well, that won't be permanent, seeing as she isn't worthy of it, she'll give it up to Penny again because she'll come back. Or Salem is still gonna convince her to join her because Winter just goes from one abuser to the other! Or she becomes the Queen of Atlas, whatever that shit means, and uses her power to become worse than Ironwood.

Those are all takes I saw of her. Literally, no matter what Winter did, no matter what happened to her, in their eyes she's always wrong and she's gotta end up being a villain. Like I don't get how those same people kept claiming they were Winter fans and that they understood their character better than anyone because it just seemed like they mischaracterized her more than anyone, and that they actually hated her and just enjoyed seeing her miserable.

I primarily post about my many interests and fandoms (see the list below). I also post the occasional art piece I make, talk about silly things in my life, queerness, disability, and alterhumanity, and make nonsensical shitposts.

Clive, hush. Not only is it appropriate to give you the title of Mythos, but it’s one that you should’ve reclaimed and taken for yourself. In fact, I don’t know why Ultima even gave you that title. It’s kind of like naming a kid “Roger Stabbington” and then being surprised when he says “ok” and stabs people.

FFXVI had a lot of storytelling problems, but one of the issues that stands out the most is the refusal to explain the whole Mythos/Logos thing. There’s ATL entries about them, sure, but they’re kind of the most barebones, reductive explanations as to why those particular words/titles were chosen for Clive.

It’s time for me to put my “I was raised in an obnoxiously Greek family” hat back on once again and -- just as I did with the Hades II trailer -- break down all of the dumb ancient Greek nonsense being thrown at us in a video game.

“Mythos” isn’t actually a word that’s meant to be used as a title. The word “mythos” in and of itself refers to one of two things, depending on how it’s being used:

1. the compilation of folklore around a particular subject. For example, there’s the very famous myth of Hades and Persephone’s marriage, but there’s a whole mythos around the explanation of why seasons exist, and Demeter’s mourning of the loss of her daughter is only part of that mythos.

2. the plot of an ancient Greek tragedy -- just in general. The mythos of the story should have some sort of reversal (either the story starts off with the protagonist in a good place and ends with them in a bad one, or vice versa), and the intention should be to evoke fear or pity from the audience. Aristotle believed that the most tragic of stories were those involving violence between friends and/or family (and who does that sound like?) -- and, the worse the tragedy, the stronger the mythos.

So, to use the word “mythos” as a title implies that the person holding this title carries with them the legends and stories born from the hearts of mankind -- the “reason” behind mankind’s existence -- and then, through great tragedy, will become a legend in and of themselves.

Yeah, that kinda sounds like Clive, doesn’t it?

Ultima’s a fuckin idiot moron for naming him that and then expecting him to become anything else.

Another fun fact about the word “mythos” and how it relates to Greek tragedies, though:

Greek tragedies were historically performed in worship of Dionysus, who was the god of pleasure and indulgence. So, for Clive to be the human embodiment of Mythos, that means that his very existence serves the purpose of exalting carnal pleasure.

Clive Rosfield is actually, literally just personified sex appeal. He, himself is not a walking libido, per se -- but he’s meant to inspire that in everyone around him.

And he kind of does, considering how many characters in-game want to polish his knob.

Anyway. We’re getting off track I WANT HIM TO GIVE ME SADDLE SORES THAT LAST AT LEAST THREE DAYS

The word “logos” is also not meant to be a title -- and, to be completely honest, I don’t feel like it works the way that the devs wanted it to work. Like, it’s fine. It’s serviceable. But it doesn’t exactly fit what Clive becomes the way that Mythos does.

A more modern interpretation of what the word “logos” means would probably be The Discourse(TM). Logos is the use of logic and reason to explain the nature of the world and mankind’s role in it. Aristotle basically thought of logos as being the thing that sets humans apart from animals -- it’s our sense of self and our ability to think objectively enough to create an actual moral compass.

So, basically, by calling Clive “Logos” Ultima’s just saying he’s attained free will and learned to think rationally on his own -- but that’s also a very basic bitch way of thinking about logos as a concept.

And it’s not as clean of a fit for him as Mythos is, considering that it wasn’t exactly Clive’s sense of self that got him to where he was (he spends like 85% of the game wondering what his purpose is), nor did his attainment of power have anything to do with rational, logical thinking. In fact, the game even goes out of its way to say that Clive is being held up by the faith of those who believe in him, which, I mean --

sure, if you also take into account the whole “Jesus Christ is thought of as being logos incarnate” thing, but like. Then that pulls away from the whole ancient Greek philosophy thing happening and goes into a different metaphor entirely, and everything just gets really muddy.

There are some scholars who believe that the concepts of mythos and logos aren’t mutually exclusive -- and, in fact, that logos actually grew out of mythos. The idea was that people started looking at the myths that they were using and started to apply logic and reason to them in order to get a more nuanced view of the world. But like...

In XVI, mankind started with rational thought when they realized that God (the God that they knew existed and were not just making up as myths) had abandoned them, and then they joined together as a community to create their own image for the world through their use of mythos.

So, I really think the game got it backwards. Clive wasn’t Mythos who became Logos. He was Logos who became Mythos.

But like. Gold star for trying.

There’s too many variations of the acronym so it’s annoying to tag and it’s a mouthful to say. And I think it puts too much emphasis on how we’re different from each other instead of focusing on how we’re all the same to the cishet audiences. We’re the queer outsider.

If you wanna be empathetic to your community, consider the fact that the individual label doesn’t matter when facing bigots. Hell bisexual has shifting meanings over the years. People used to and still identify as transsexual, as a sissy, and fags and dykes and lesbos. And you will never be any different from them to a not-queer person.

There’s so many organizations with the name “Queer Alliance” starting from the 1960s. With queer theory being around since at least the 90s. I don't participate in fandom and I don't ship things. I'm not about to defend specific instances or pairings because everything exists in subjective contexts, and texts especially so. But also, I have graduate degrees in English and text analysis and lived experience with CSA and trafficking that went on for a long fucking time. And I am very, very tired of being called the worst things you can call a trauma survivor because I don't care about shipping.

I'm not anti-ship, or whatever. I am not down for imposing my own trauma, feelings about it, and opinions on others in order to censor their art. Call me a proshipper if you want -- ignoring the part where I don't write fanfic or participate in fandom -- because I agree with them. I condemn CSA/CSEM, abusers, predators, the entire evil side of humanity but people who write fic aren't that. Neither are people who read it, even the most problematic of the problematic.

People can write, as fiction, as fantasy, whatever they want. There are no real people being harmed. I can distinguish between those things and, again, am a survivor of some very intense abuse. You're welcome to disagree. I'm fine with that if you're fine with me. I don't believe in absolutes when it comes to topics this complicated (and it is). I spent years on the opposite side, actually, because just the MENTION of things like incest or age gaps triggered me. And then I would do the same and get mad at the people writing it.

But also in treating everything like such a monolithic moral purity test, where you're either good or deserve to suffer -- a test that I fail, because there is no room for things like Complexity -- you just spent a lot of time telling me I'm as bad as the people who trafficked me. Because of fiction. Because of fake things happening to fake people, based on an idea in someone else's head, people's real harm and real trauma means we're as bad as their abusers. That is so heavily the implication in so much of this talk. If I don't disregard my degrees, my training, my own experiences, my own principles and take a stand against people shipping things on the internet, I must basically be a predator!

That is violent and fucked up.

I (like a lot of people with trauma histories) use fiction and writing to process and heal. I don't even post them. A lot of that writing, and being able to seek it out, was helpful. It was a connection to someone else out in the world who maybe understood a little bit of the pain and fear and confusion.

There's a difference between fiction and real abuse. And the "but predators use it to groom vulnerable children" angle barely holds water -- predators use anything. Mainstream TV shows. Vending machine snacks. Gumballs. Access to a remote control to change a channel. A lot of things are more accessible and friendly to kids than making them read. Advocating for censorship, especially in today's political hellhouse, is not actually helpful. It just feels really righteous.

Which doesn't mean there aren't those trying to leverage fic to "normalize" abuse and grooming, I absolutely believe they have and do, but that does not justify externalizing your pain and trauma onto others, or policing them, or trying to take control back by claiming an imaginary moral high ground and pinning other people to it. It also doesn't mean that censoring the internet of all things icky to you saves the world, the kids, anything. It just means they'll find easier avenues, of which there are already so many. It also means you're all just attacking people from a place of presumed hurt rather than compassion, curiosity, anything like that.

So.

Anyone whose stance on this entire thing boils down to "you agree with me or you're a secret pedo enabler," you need to leave.

I'm happy to talk about it if you want! I don't think people trying to draw those lines are right but I think they're well-intentioned, until they start calling me shit that triggers entire mental collapses. You know. In the name of saving the children. Which hasn't been a red flag for conservatism and oppression for hundreds of years or anything, either. How many kids do you think are protected by shutting down places they can actually go and talk about the darkest shit in their heads? How many of us just suffer unbearable pain and isolation because the culture around us is shame-based and if you think about things like that, you're Just Like Them?

This ain't about protecting kids, basically. This discourse never has been. It's about being righteous and never examining why that is. It's about lashing out and displacement. I think the concern for victims is real, like I said, but that concern can translate to actual, real help elsewhere. People are DOING the work to make the internet safer. This? Is not that work.

You are responsible for how you manage your trauma and pain, and that has to include not taking it out on others. Full stop. Even when you disagree. Even when everything in your brain is going DANGER ALARMS DANGER ALARMS DANGER ALARMS WE MUST STOP THIS because someone ships something you think is wrong or uncomfortable. It sucks, and it sucks we have to do that, and it sucks we have to learn how. None of us asked to. None of us wanted to end up here. It's not victim blaming to say you're accountable for your own recovery.

But while you are here, maybe consider that the name/shame/blame model hasn't been working either. For hundreds of fucking years. We know shame doesn't motivate people to care, or learn.

But especially when you're weaponizing shame against trauma survivors for recognizing their own experiences in literature, art, stories. We all struggle with toxic shame. Using it against people until they agree with you?

I’m so sorry, OP, you wrote a hell of a lot here and I love it all, but I just can’t get over the statement “trans men do not experience intersectionality at All while trans women do.” You put that in this post a whole year ago as one tiny thing to lead into many other things with so much else to say afterwards – yet nothing fills me with more white-hot rage than that person’s assertion that transmascs and trans men are only ever oppressed by transphobia.

Bebe Rhexa promised to give the gays “everything they want”, and fans quickly went “another Louis collab?” (honestly that IS all everyone wants) “I wish I fuckin could” she says, with one of those crying emojis, and man if thats not a MOOD I don’t know what is!!

Liam’s weekly FIFA podcast is apparently not happening this week; he instead put out a ‘greatest hits’ mashup of his previous episodes, which play the “best moments from the series so far” (a pretty short look back, considering that there are only 4 episodes of the show). Hmmm, you know what, actually, would it be cool if we did a ‘best of Discourse’ that might be fun I should get on that.

Meanwhile, in whatever the hell Harry has going on, we circle back around to that goddamn ‘feeding a fan’s fish’ picture because time is a FLAT CIRCLE. What we see is people going crazy because someone capitalized on gossip (started by Deuxmoi who have been thoroughly discredited as an actual source of information at this point even without this nonsense) that she was Harry’s “fuck buddy” by… buying a completely new ‘if you ain’t a fisherman you ain’t SHIT’ hat and trying to pass it off as his ratty old one. Deuxmoi claimed that his FWB took the picture. Umm, no? The photographer was Sonya Jasinski who has worked with Kacey Musgraves before, and was apparently vacationing with Nicole Branch (who is the sister of a singer/songwriter who ALSO has worked with Kacey), as well as a group of other friends over the summer. Sonya originally credited the photo to Nicole, but that has since been removed. Sonya is a professional photographer and the picture is still up on her own instagram. The picture was taken at the 13 year old fan’s bedroom (who’s family seems to be friends with Sonya), and Harry was dressed in head to toe Gucci when the pic was taken. So, as it stands, H stopped by the house of people he KNEW, met Mr. Dad (or whatever his last name is- his preteen daughter told us he got her stuff signed for her), and Sonya, and Nicole, got his pic taken in the fan’s room by either woman, and signed a bunch of merch. Deuxmoi can claim this was a booty call all they like, but if so it was -crowded- and please let this be the last time we - or anyone - has to talk about this ridiculous situation! Nicole isn’t the only one linking herself to Harry through headgear though - Olivia Wilde posted a pic (old) yesterday of herself in a pink La Ligne hat, ie the same as the one Harry was wearing for the one time only Holivia pap pic fest, and she ALSO got something signed by him for someone (Discourse: “please sign this titty for me Harry”) , though we know they see each other at work every day so hopefully we can skip the complicated discourse about the signing of that.
