it is still so funny to me how victor hugo inadvertently completely exposed tumblr's entire weird deal with ugliness like 150 years before that website even existed when he hand fed the fujoshis of 19th century france and thus 21st century Online a perfect glorious ship that was, crucially, "hot guy x ugly guy". and then the fanon rendition of said ugly guy was invariably like "racially ambiguous man with a big nose who is sometimes a bit fat". and then when people called that out esp when compared to hot guy enjolras, who to be fair does have a physical description of his hotness so at least the fandom wasn't entirely pulling Ethnically Ambiguous Occasionally Fat Man's Waiflike Blonde White Foil out of their arses, the response tended to be like well behold! i have turned enjolras into a dark skinned black man (i have done this by using the colour dropper tool to change his skintone and nothing else so don't worry his features are still palatably white)! or occasionally tumblr's favourite - i have made him chubby :) <- guy who will definitely not act like a covert fat fetishist about this in the weirdest way possible. the funniest way i've ever seen a fandom backed into a corner about their biases and hugo had no idea he was doing it....

#gael garcía bernal#desierto#ggb filmography gifs#desierto 2015#gael garcia bernal#this is ultimately a pretty standard thriller of the being-chased-by-an-inexorable-killer type#where the cast is picked off one by one until only the most conventionally physically attractive remain#this is good news for gael's character#on account of being played by gael#i think this one is elevated by the setting both in terms of beauty (it is stunning) and by making effective plot use of it#that apparently meant they were shooting two hours' drive away from the nearest towns with no cellphone reception etc.#which may be why we don't see more films set here#also elevated by the performances which are uniformly good#also elevated by the themes (jeffrey dean morgan's antagonist is targeting migrants crossing the border)#so we're back in the territory explored in documentaries like who is dayani cristal but this time as fictional thriller#this film came out as the trump wall discourse was hotting up and that was naturally something that got talked about in interviews#clever inclusion of antagonist's dog which effectively constrains what the characters could do to get out of the situation#so unlike in many films of this type there isn't a screamingly obvious course of action that they should have taken but unaccountably don't#still it remains a genre film sticking broadly to the conventions of that genre so the plot isn't going to astonish you#i've still avoided giffing the most spoilery moments though#tbh i suspect gael's character is still screwed at the end but then i think that's also the point (see: themes)

it’s literally disturbing to me how even people who are supposedly against true crime adaptations have been receiving monsters. I have literally seen people like… “I don’t think the show is faithful to or respectful of the true story, but if you pretend it’s fiction it’s a rlly good show! 💞” ppl who are claiming to be sympathetic to the brothers’ abuse making memes about the latest episode they watched.
this isn’t something you can pretend is fiction. this isn’t a “separate the art from the artist” moment. this is ryan murphy making another sexualized, bastardized version of somebody’s trauma, created without their permission or consultation and put on-screen for audiences to drool over white men with six-packs.

Not naming names but some fandoms have the most terrible redesigns; there is no spirit of the original character and at this point just make them an OC.
#LITERALLY if it wasn't for the names I had ZERO idea what some of those redesigns were they were so badly done#All had pretty much the exact same type of clothing#same bland flat coloring#SUCKED ALL THE BRIGHTNESS OUT#oh and they also made the one conventionally attractive character plus sized which SHOULD BE GOOD EXCEPT#not only did this person not commit to it and still made the character without a double chin belly or thick legs#she's also the ONLY plus sized character in a cast of 12 that was redesigned#it feels less like a genuine redesign and a HA SEE YOUR WAIFU FAVE IS FAT NOW EAT THAT COOMERS#they also gave her THE UGLIEST OUTFIT EVER#DESPITE HER CANONICALLY BEING A FASHIONISTA#like why does she look like she just dove headfirst into a bargain bin at Jubilee's#WHY DO THE TOP AND BOTTOM NOT MATCH AT ALL
