Nah but let’s talk abt how ppl use disability terms/harmful stereotypes/ derogatory words so casually this disabled pride month (tw ableism below)

The new terms are “sch*zoposting” and “delulu” but shit like this has been around for years and it’s so incredibly frustrating.

Another example is those TikTok POVS about “the weird kid in class” but they are all stereotypes of autistic ppl.

Or the misuse of the word triggered, the misuse of the word OCD, the misuse of gaslighting, of cr*pple, “are you deaf?” “Are you blind?” “Hellen Keller isn’t real.” I could go on and on but I will simply say this.

Disabled people are real people with feelings, emotions and lives. We deserve to use the terms that we need to COMFORTABLY. We deserve to exist without people taking the language used in the context of ourselves and putting it in a negative light.

We deserve to exist.

We deserve happiness.

Check in on your disabled friends.

Don’t assume things about people you don’t know.

I know people constantly bemoan the constant cuts back to ice pick joe’s subplot. It’s dreary and unpleasant and adds to the movie’s stupid long runtime, adding nothing to the plot from a pragmatic perspective, but I think people fail to understand how much it encapsulates the themes of goncharov.

Throughout the plot, it’s implied that joe was an american who immigrated to italy to reconnect with his roots. He is in many ways in indictment of the great american melting pot- how we romanticize the concept of diaspora to fit our own cultural narrative. Joe mentions that when he first moved to naples he had his bike stolen within a matter of minutes- a blatant reference to the 1948 italian classic bicycle theives. He went to italy to reconnect to his roots, and got exactly what his family left italy to escape: a life of crime and poverty.

This is why ice pick joe’s dogs are so important: he’s a dog of the mob! He represents the fate every other character in the movie is attempting to avoid. Yet he dies on his own terms with a smile on his face, his german shepherd running away into the woods. The symbolism of this is obvious: he’s been cut loose. Despite how much Goncharov did to avoid meeting ice pick joe’s fate, joe got the one thing goncharov wanted: his freedom.

People may say he’s a bad guy for all the people he killed and the crimes he committed, but ice pick joe’s only real crime was being italian.

Like it does really get swept under the rug that Dick literally has the emotional capacity of a 3rd grader when he lost his parents in both pre-crisis, og post-crisis and rebirth? Not to mention how recent his tragedy is in Dark Victory which is the one everyone seems to be referencing but not reading? I think the way the two arcs are treated shows how little some folks are willing to engage w/ Dick's anger as Robin with any level of empathy or from any other perspective than using him as a foil to Jaybin. Dick either becomes a 'feral' toddler or a cheerful idiot to prop Jason up when in reality they were very similar as Robin because narratively speaking Jason was created to fill the specific spot Dick left when he stopped being Bruce's partner. Like. Can we just stop ignoring the text and maybe flex our media literacy muscles as a group?
