Alright, I'll say it: Jack Harkness and the Doctor's relationship is possibly the most fleshed out/complicated dynamic in Doctor Who and that is INCLUDING the master/doctor relationship. Seriously, think about it:

the fact that when they meet jack is presented as sleazy con man and the doctor makes him brave- makes him good

but that they are both willing to die for rose as long as she is safe

and then she comes back and dooms them both to live (even though jack has already died for her and the doctor WILL die for her)

(ninerosejack is canon and you cannot convince me otherwise)

but then the doctor sees jack as immortal as someone he COULD spend the rest of his life with

and instead of embracing it like you'd think he would because he is so wrecked by people leaving him/being left by him the doctor RUNS bc the Doctor is so scared of jack of what he means of what he is

jack ends up abandoned in dalek dust goes back in time to find the doctor suffers a hundred years alone/being tortured but STILL WAITS

(screw amy being the girl who waited or rory being the boy who waited- Jack Harkness is the boy who waited and he did it FIRST)

Jack finds out that he was abandoned. that the man that he loves HATES the sight of him. that the doctor would rather have a genocidal murderer than have him

and so Jack gets the hell out of dodge to go to a man who DOES love him

and don't get me wrong Jack loves Ianto and Jack DOES remember Ianto until he dies as the Face of Boe don't forget that (protecting Novice Hame from the virus as he couldn't Ianto

BUT AFTER EVERYTHING THE DOCTOR HAS DONE TO JACK JACK STILL LOVES THEM

Jack still considers five billion years cursed to never die to be BETTER than the alternative: dying a young time-agent-turned-con-man

Jack has more reason than any other companion save maybe Amy to hate the Doctor & yet spends 20 years in jail to rescue Thirteen still LOVES HER

AND AFTER FIVE BILLION YEARS HE ORGANIZES THAT FIRST MEETING ON SATELLITE FIVE HE ORGANIZES 9/ROSE'S FIRST DATE

jack harkness is a living ghost a reminder of the doctor's failures a physical fixed point and yet he still loves the girl who cursed him and the time lord that turned him into the kind of person that would give his dying breaths to protect the last of humanity in a dying city and tell the doctor that he is not alone

because fuck it, YANA was a warning but also a reminder a final gift

jack had been there all along, a ghost an echo a PROMISE

there is no more human character than jack harkness

I hate to be a hater but the doctor making out with the rouge guy broke my little thoschei and Riverdoctor heart what the fuck was that, is the doctor really moving on from his WIFE? It's great to have LGBTQ representation but also the fact they did it during pride month and not another month feels like pandering, all these years they could have done it any other time, it's been known the doctor doesn't care about gender and is genderless, why not like her kiss Yaz? Or kiss River as 13? Or have two female doctor and master forms interact? Or let tensimm kiss, they looked like they were about to on SEVERAL occasions. There is nothing wrong with Rouge as a character but I think it was out of character for 15 to disregard his wife like that, he can move on, but just like that??? Also 12 kissed missy twice, why was the only time they kissed in a heterosexual context?

I’m still so mad and confused about the master during thirteen’s seasons. Like. Okay. I figured the master would become a major villain again because they’re the master and they’re iconic and etc etc but Missy literally developed SO fucking much and it was completely ignored and not even MENTIONED during thirteen’s run. Like why the fresh fucking hell did the master go from feeling guilt about what they’ve done and finally admitting “maybe it’s time to stand with the doctor” to That with no acknowledgement and no explanations it makes no goddamn sense to me like whether you liked missy’s redemption arc or not the lack of continuity and erasure of character depth is INFURIATING

kind of enraptured by the idea of ten/dhawan!master just because they'd have the classic thoschei "i could fix you"/"i could make you worse" dynamic but they're also in a competition as to who wants to die at the other's hand first

i do think a lot about the master & the doctor both deliberately seeking out other regenerations of each other than whoever they’re mostly interacting with. especially when they just want a chat, a moment’s truce, something that could be called comfort if they dared to put it into words. easier to do those things when, well, they’re still enemies, but the hurts are farther apart in time. ‘i’m your future, you’re my past, we’re both still hurting each other where we come from, but that’s a different me and a different you, and tonight, can’t we just play a game or share a bed for old time’s sake?’ you know?

she was more than that, and she's lived longer than he could possibly assume. a product of his own actions and she's just as strong as he was. just as mad. just as reckless and just as hopeless.

she was truly an impossible girl.

and he was nothing, if not tempted, to see just how impossible she could be.

I'm surprised there isn't more people who are fans of both simm master and dhawan master. They're both characters who are terrible and awful and easy to hate yet feel so completely heartbreaking
