something you don't learn until you get really far into the making and tinkering life is that there's no such thing as "glue" really. there are so many kinds of substances that stick other substances together and they are all very different and if you just go look at the adhesives aisle in the hardware store the packaging never actually tells you anything useful. it's like "this is SUPER T-REX POWER GLUE" and the fine print says "good for use on wood metal and plastic". okay. but WHICH PLASTICS MY GOOD BITCH,

because SURPRISE, there's no such thing as "plastic" either. every kind of wood is basically the same on a chemical level, but the only thing every plastic has in common is "some of its molecules are long" and that is NOT a quality that determines how things stick together.

I just ordered some stuff I hope will permanently stick a circuit board to a steel sheet and withstand temperatures up to 150 degrees. by the way circuit boards are made of epoxy-bound woven glass cloth which is cool as hell but what the fuck do you glue that with? can any of the 12 kinds of adhesives I currently own do that? no of course not. if I want to stick two pieces of acrylic together so hard they become watertight to a depth of 3000 metres I have some shit that does that, but it does literally nothing else.

anyway. once you start learning how many kinds of sticking things together there are, the people at 3M start to seem like witches and I don't know if they're the kind we can trust with that level of arcane knowledge

i don't know why or what the thought process was but I woke up and thought:

hm. the rats but theyre humans and teachers. (i think i really just thought about scott hosting a gardening club and went "hm yes teacher scott")

i haven't thought about the humans' roles in the au but i did write down that the fleas/gears/mud clumps/thread/other various items that represent chat are their students. because we fleas/etc. are very important and deserve to be part of this i think.

APO is a Drama teacher (the whole cosplayer rat thing)

ACHO is an English teacher. He also has worms /hj (do i have to explain this one?)

OWEN is a Physics teacher and also supervises the Mechanics/Tech Club (physics because smart rat owen and also the whole "scientist dad" thing [i know it was a lie but.] and tech club bc again. do i have to explain.)

SCOTT is a Biology teacher and takes care of the Gardening Club and Cooking Club. Sometimes he helps out with the Baking Club. (biology for the whole witch thing and also plants/nature i think thats biology?? the others are obvious)

SNIFF is a Design teacher. I don't know if other places have that but basically its like. making products (clothes, toothbrushes, posters, etc) and structures and shit i think? that's how it was in my school (building)

OLIVE is an Economics teacher. (i think economics works with law in some places??)

TUBBO is a Music teacher. (yknow. he first appeared and began singing at the top of his lungs in rsmp.)

JIMMY is also a Music teacher and monitors the students during breaks and in between classes [people call him the Safety Man]. (music because he kept singing to the cats)

KROW is an English teacher as well. (he wrote a buncha poems at some point that caused it to go on a tangent about what power is and found out scott has power or smth yeah it's probably the one weird teacher)

LIZZIE is a Chemistry teacher and takes care of the Baking Club. She sometimes helps Scott with Cooking Club. (chem + cooking shit ig? i think cooking involves chem so thats why)

OLI is the Janitor. Also "helps" with Baking and Cooking club by cleaning (eating) the scraps. Also he probably carries fleas actually.(janitor because trash rat. janitor oli probably eats the trash in the janitor's closet and everyone knows)

WILL is the French teacher. Or Maths. I haven't decided. (i'm saying maths because nobody i've written down would teach maths and i'm saying french because the whole thing with scott's frenchef hat)

I have an idea for a new AU with Thena and Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh starts at an elite culinary school where the food in each lesson is judged by strict critics.

The students in the higher classes warn the new ones that one specific critic (Thena) can never be satisfied and never gives a good review. Many students have dropped out of school because of this. But Gilgamesh wants to see for himself.

"I heard she made everyone in her class cry in their first lesson."

"I heard that she subs in for real food critics sometimes."

"I heard that the dean himself gave her a full-ride scholarship she's so good."

Gil rolls his eyes at the classmates of his whispering - loudly - about their expected panel of judges. He doesn't think this critic can possibly be as frightening as people are making her out to be. She's just a student, like them, right?

"Can't they just put us out of our misery?" Druig grumbles next to him, shifting nervously on his feet as he looks down at his dish.

"Hey," Gil nudges his shorter, more nervous friend, "don't look so freaked out. "It's a great dish."

Druig sighs, "thanks, man. But it's not you I gotta impress, is it? It's 'em."

The door opens and three senior students step into the room.

Sersi is the top student in the Molecular Gastronomy course. She makes creations that seem transmuted right down to the atomic level, it seems sometimes. They look stunning, they're always delicious, and the way she can make one thing taste entirely different from how it looks is always a showstopper.

Phastos all but wrote the bible by which the school acts. He doesn't cook, but his knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics--is so all-encompassing that there's basically nothing he doesn't know. It is just a rumour, but supposedly he has written all the recipes the courses use for instructing students since he arrived.

Thena is last, and by far the scariest. She looks like she's never seen the sun or eaten a morsel of food, at that. Her reputation precedes her, and her perfect palette is as terrifying as it is rare. She doesn't cook either, but if there is any sort of flaw in any way, she will detect it. And she won't have the smile on her face that Sersi does when she breaks the news.

Thena stands between the other two, eyeing the class with an expression that already screams that she's not looking forward to this. "Please present your dishes."

The first two come up, their trays rattling from their nerves.

Gil watches from his table a little further in the back. Sersi and Phastos try first, giving their praise as well as gentle critiques and advice. Once Thena is done sniffing it, she takes a bite.

"You lack identity."

The whole class practically keels over. It may seem small, and maybe even nitpicky. But to hear that you - as a chef - have no identity in your food?--it's devastating.

"I would say you lack creativity, but that is not what this is," she states and sets her spoon down after the one bite. "You have replicated a family recipe in the hopes that it would convey an emotion. But the balance has been put off by your muddled intentions. It's over-seasoned, and the flavours battling for dominance has overpowered what would actually make it shine if you weren't so clumsy."

The class is practically crying for their fallen comrade. And this is round one!

Druig blows out a breath as they watch their fellow student shuffle back to his table in shame (borderline in tears). "And the Ice Queen strikes again."

Gil stares straight ahead. He shrugs, "she did give him advice, though."

Druig looks at him with wide eyes. "If I shove you into a lion's den and tell you not to die, that's advice, I s'pose."

Gil chuckles just a little, still watching eagerly, "shut up."

The critique goes on, many falling to the Ice Queen's sharp words along the way. It's not that she has nothing nice to say at all, it's just that the bad seems to always outweigh the good for her.

Sersi and Phastos offer sympathetic smiles and waves; obviously they're used to this.

"Next."

Gil and Druig approach with their trays, a plate for each judge. Druig goes first.

He clears his throat, "I-I've made a confit salmon with swiss chard gelee and potato mousseline."

Sersi smiles brightly at them, showing off what's made her such a darling of the culinary world already. "That's very impressive, Druig!"

"A lot of technique," Phastos murmurs as he takes a bite. "The textures are right, although it's maybe a little soft overall."

Druig nods, taking the criticism at face value, "thank you."

"You have too much to prove."

Gil keeps a careful eye on his tablemate. Druig is stubborn, and younger than the rest of them. She's right, she just doesn't have to say it like that.

Druig stands tall against it, though. He looks the Ice Queen in the eye as he says, "and?"

Thena raises her eyes to him. Gil sees that they're green for the first time. "You've selected the most advanced techniques you've mastered thus far, but as Phastos said, there is no cohesion to the presentation of all of them in one dish. You didn't have to make a mousse of the potatoes--in fact, potatoes are not what I would have served with salmon in the first place."

Druig crosses his arms.

"The salmon is cooked perfectly," Thena says just as cut and dry as the negative stuff. She places her fork down, again, needing only one bite of each element to make her assessment. "It only brings out that, had you leaned into your strengths instead of showcasing your weaknesses, this could be perfect."

Druig has his arguing face on, and Gil almost wonders if he should drag him back from the judging table to cool off. He rolls his eyes, though, going back into his dismissive and pouty shell for the time being. He huffs, "I'll take it."

Gil is left alone as Druig moves back to the table.

Sersi smiles, "and what have you made today?"

"Chicken and dumplings!"

A poor man's dish. Chicken stew with dumplings in it: something that needs no technique to put forth. The whole room is silent, not even trying to hide the overall horror that has descended over them.

Even Sersi strains a little to smile at him as they pull their bowls closer. "How...interesting."

"I know, I know," Gil laughs, watching as Thena draws her spoon up to smell everything. "Just hear me out."

"I made a really quick chicken stock and let it simmer while I was preparing everything else. I made it more ramen style than country chicken soup style, but I also added some cinnamon and star anise to kind of have an element of what makes pho so comforting."

"Then while that was simmering I was roasting some veg with the other half of the carcass. I mashed up and then pan fried some potatoes and there's actually a little something in those dumplings."

"Well, that certainly sounds..." Sersi trails off, looking to her left as she holds a dumpling in hand, "impressive."

Thena is smiling.

She licks her lips as she puts her spoon down, still smiling at the shimmering bowl of broth. She picks up a dumpling and her eyes spark.

"You already know, don't you?" Gil smiles sheepishly. She looks at him as she takes a bite, pulling out the cheese he put in the centre. He snickers at the look on her face. "I made a simple mash and then turned it in to a dough with some flour and a little duck egg for some bite to it. Then I added a little more potato with some butter and the little piece of cheese curd for some chew. Like a-"

"Pierogi."

Phastos pushes his glasses up his nose as Thena utters something that isn't a direct review of the food.

Gil beams, his whole chest swelling with warmth from the inside out. "You order them for lunch all the time, right? You must have made them when you were little."

Thena smiles, taking a second bite of the fried mashed potatoes and their filling. "I did."

Gil celebrates to himself a little, clenching his fist. He looks over his shoulder and gives Druig a big thumb's up.

Thena takes another bite of the soup, too, her lashes fluttering as she savours the small but deliberate spoonful. "Hm."

Gil inches forward.

"It's not...perfect."

The class lets out a collective sigh.

"But," Thena is still smiling, taking a third bite. "I think it's about as close as I've ever had."

hearing people talking about cooking is always such an interesting topic and i'm gonna take a min to ramble about it. i learned how to cook (eggs and pasta mostly) as a kid from my mom because she learned to cook at a young age as well and she would also be gone on work trips pretty often. later on in life i worked in restaurant kitchens as a kitchen manager and a line cook. i've even had the displeasure of working alongside new hire line cooks that don't fucking know how to cook but figure that they can still do the job (they could not)

some things just become intuitive so it's hard for me to remember exactly what i needed to focus on learning and what did just come naturally from the start, but a lot of it relates to just general science/chemistry knowledge. denser items will take longer to cook than less dense things (potatoes take forfuckingever but sliced button mushrooms take like a minute or two), high heat makes things cook way faster so liquids will boil off sooner, dense items will sear/burn quicker, and thin/small things will just burn. some professional cooks don't even know this based on the amount of times i've had to talk coworkers out of turning the fryer temp higher because things were taking a long time to cook (this is a great way to get a nice crispy skin on some shit that's still frozen in the middle)

there's a lot of learning how to read recipes. abbreviations (sometimes tablespoon is T or tb or TBSP or Tbs), how to adjust amounts if you need more or less of something, looking up substitutions for things (if you don't have milk but need to make a cream sauce, using applesauce instead of oil or butter or eggs in some baking recipes, etc). its definitely a skill to know how to read some recipes, and coming in with your own knowledge is great, but it's another instance of "you need to learn the rules to know how to break them." this is how you get the screenshots of ppl substituting kale in their banana cookie recipes and then wondering why they suck

thinking of foods in terms of nutritional value can also be helpful. if you have tortilla chips and salsa youre technically getting some vegetables in you. frozen and dried fruits and veggies are still fruits and veggies. rice and beans is grains and protein. miso soup with tofu and spinach is lots of protein and iron. romaine salad with balsamic vin, olive oil, feta, and tomatoes is some vitamins and fats and calcium but without grains and fiber it wont give you too much energy so have some bread or something with it. moving away from processed food will make you feel better. apple slice and peanut butter is my new depression meal bc it makes me feel more alive than shredded cheese from the bag and you can feel like a roman emperor a bit.

if you're just starting out learning how to cook: try to keep it simple with starch + veggie + protein (veggie pasta is a staple classic, roast some stuff and toss it with pasta and garlic and olive oil), find something with just a handful of ingredients that you actually want to eat. the act of cooking can be fun but not everyone thinks its fun, so at least make sure you'll want to eat the final product. if there's any sauces you really like try to keep some on hand. gochujang+soy sauce+sesame oil+sugar+broth can be really good in a stir fry, and basically all of those things will last a long time.

anyway theres a lot of text about cooking. theres a reason i stayed working in kitchens for almost 5 years despite how shit working in kitchens is. i like food and cooking. its one of the few things humans have been doing for a bajillion years and its necessary to live a healthy life and if you can find some fun and peace in the process then thats even better. theres no shame in not knowing how to cook but there is shame in refusing to try and learn imo

First thing you notice 'bout people? Hair, I think, if it's something that stands out? I honestly don't pay much attention to how people look – for example, someone I met in a group three or more times a week was like 8 months pregnant before I noticed it, and I only noticed after I heard her friends commenting how big she is now. And she really was. :"D I just have 108362 things in my head all at once, can't pay attention to everything!!

Scary movies or happy ending? I've only seen a handful of scary movies and I don't like them so x)

Special talent? I do a bunch of things adequately or enough to get by but I don't think I have talents that most people wouldn't be able to learn with studying and/or practice. :D I'm not really sure what special talents actually mean. But I guess I've gotten compliments on the speeches I've given this past year, so maybe public speaking?

Your hobbies? Writing fics and poems, reading (mostly audio books in the car at this point), roleplays (larp, dnd, text rp), video and board games, karaoke (not as much as I would like)

Favourite subject in school? All languages (I've studied almost 10 languages in different schools at some point but I've forgotten most of them) were my fav but I also liked religion and history (different cultures + ethics), psychology (until we had to learn about brain chemistry and then I quit because I wasn't good at biology lol), art (never was good at it but still fun) and cooking (extra food hell yeah). I absolutely hated math, physics, chemistry and philosophy :D

Dream job: I'm already in the job that I dreamed of since the age of 15 but if I wanted to do something else, I'd try to pursue writing, either fiction or academic research.

A few notes/headcanons about nagisa and honoka in my Watashi Wa Pretty Cure Seed universe bc tbh its a fanfic why shouldnt i just talk abt it randomly. Why should i care about spoiling my plans? (Has no plans)

-Nagisa and Honoka decided to go to college together, and by that i mean they decided they wanted to go to college nearby each other so they could live in the same apartment. It was pretty lucky that they ended up going to the same college so they could room together in the dorms.

-They started dating a few months post canon, and kept it kind of secretive until a few months later when Nagisa came out to her family. They were very accepting, ofc, and invited Honoka over for dinner once a week at least. I think they actually do this thing my mom and my dads mom do where she basically calls my mom all the time. Like, Nagisa's mom likes hearing about how Nagisa is doing from Honoka, and also getting to know her daughter's girlfriend. I think Nagisa's mom is also the one both go to for common sense advice, like how to use the washing machines at the college.

-Honoka is double majoring in physics and chemistry. She runs the colleges science club already, and is getting offered a TA position next semester, along with presenting a research subject to a professor for them to work on. She works at the colleges library right now, though isnt the best at it. She just... cant remember where everything is all the time. Shes excited to switch to a TA job.

-Nagisa is a currently undeclared major in on a sports scholarship (do not talk to me about realism). She can get kind of overwhelmed thinking about majors sometimes, but is leaning towards trying to get a degree in physical therapy. Shes in the colleges lacrosse team, and is one of the best team members, though its a very small team and league. She also considering participqting in boxing. She's actually ended up a bit involved in womens sports advocacy, and is a huge proponet of not just gender segregating sports, but is a bit mystified at how to go about change.

-Both are in their second year of college. During their first semester, they tended to come home every weekend to spend time with their families, but now only come home for breaks and holidays really. Nagisa found it hardest to adjust at first, and had trouble sleeping after arriving at college, but shes gotten used to it as the new normal and settled into life there.

-mepple and mipple are both still around. Theyve gotten a bit better at shutting up while their in class, but people definitely think Nagisa talks on her "phone" in the weirdest fucking way

-they rarely transform anymore. They havent used Marble Screw or Rainbow Storm in ages. Sometimes theyll still slip up and Honoka will think of herself as Cure White, or Nagisa will think she can jump further than she can.

-Nagisa has worked in the school cafeteria. Sorry maam. Idk if a line in the fic contradicts this bc no it doesnt. I say so now

-Nagisa likes listening to audiobooks and podcasts and will sometimes put one on in the background while she and honoka are cooking or something.

-they have a weekly documentary movie night

-honokas professors keep asking her to study abroad but she doesnt want to. She hasnt told nagisa because shes worried nagisa will think shes holding honoka back, when its honokas choice to stay.

-they are looking for an apartment to move into next year, as the dorms fucking suck.

-honoka has learned how to fix basic appliances after someone on her floor broke their toaster.

I went to Barnes & Noble yesterday

for my birthday, because I had one new(ish) and one very old gift card to burn. ($20.00 and $1.19, as it turned out; I genuinely don't remember when I got the old one, I found it sitting at the bottom of the junk drawer and wasn't sure it had anything left on it at all.)

I don't think I'd been since before the pandemic; I used to go a lot as a teenager living at home with my bibliophile mother, then less and less as the years went on, and even in the late 2010s pre-pandemic, barely at all because I had discovered the cheapest source of random physical books to try reading, my library system's constant cycle of used book sales.

I know this is hitting me late, and it's going to keep hitting me at surprising times, but I was totally overwhelmed. Not by people (it wasn't that busy and it's a very open space) but by the sheer volume of books, and thus, my choices.

I didn't go in with a plan of what to buy. I used to pick up bargain books there a lot; random cookbooks that looked interesting, or discounted journals, sometimes even fiction hardcovers that were deeply marked down because they didn't sell all that well and the store needed them gone.

I looked through the bargain section (though it's been rebranded and moved to a different place in the store, I could tell by the stock that it was the bargain section) and didn't find a single thing I wanted. I have the internet for recipes instead of cookbooks (half the YouTube we watch are cooking channels!) and they didn't have any fiction I wanted and I definitely didn't need any of the random "learn to do X craft" kits because I pretty much know how to do all of those already.

Which meant I was going to buy actual books and I was not prepared.

I wandered around for a bit and started to feel really pressured; not by my husband, who was with me but perfectly happy to wander around himself and not hustle me out of the store, but by myself, and the feeling of "I'm a writer and book nerd, I write reviews of every book I read basically for fun at this point, why the fuck can't I decide what to buy."

I ended up checking my Storygraph app to remind myself what was on my TBR, combined with the vague knowledge of "oh yeah I can't get this easily from the library system so let's see if they have it in stock."

(I haven't organized my entire TBR this way, but I do have some of it broken down by availability: I can get this from Hoopla, this from Libby, this from my local library branch, but these I would have to request, and so on. I'm trying to work through my TBR now oldest to newest for the most part, but some things are definitely hung up by availability, because buying a book feels like A Big Investment if I have to get it full price in order to read it at all, and I'm not sure I'll want to keep it; shelf space is always at a premium.)

Finally, I walked out with Chemistry by Weike Wang and The Setting Sun by Osamu Dazai, and no more gift cards burning a hole in my junk drawer, mission accomplished.

I'm not even sure yet if this experience makes me want to go back more often (to less the feeling of being overwhelmed through exposure) or never again (because feeling imposter syndrome in a bookstore was so deeply fucking unpleasant, why couldn't I just enjoy being in a bookstore without feeling like I didn't belong there when that's utterly ridiculous.)

"it's very obvious that they were not planned." and he's already spoken about how not only were they supposed to originally kiss in 1x05, but that if it weren't for the chemistry between their actors, the show would have went a lot differently. endgame or not, acting like they weren't ever going to be at least explored on kind of makes you look a bit delusional. any tv watcher would be able to tell you that the one couple with unfinished business will always end up getting a chance in the spotlight. it's one of the biggest tropes that constantly gets used. and if they weren't endgame, you know damn well rini was not going to be based on how they were written in season 2 episode 1 alone. the cracks were always there. you were just too biased to see them.

"they basically stopped talking after 2x6 and she went all in for ej and he went all in for nini." and what actually ended up happening was that they had to physically remove ricky from gina's storyline in order to make a relationship with any other male character work, and when ej stopped stepping up, you were somehow surprised that a relationship that had rebound all over it failed even after gina kept emphasizing how she doesn't get things right the first time. and if ricky deleting nini's comments and lashing out on her meant "going all in", i fear for what you consider to be healthy depictions of relationships.

"they only made the switch because olivia left after s2, and they didn't know that she was going to bc drivers license blew up right before they wrapped." yet before they wrapped, three episodes in (all filmed and written before drivers license) rini's miscommunication problems were only getting worse by the episode. even if you were rooting for them in season 1, there's no way you saw a positive ending coming for them in season 2. i accept some forms of delusion because it tends to work out sometimes, but what exactly were you holding onto by that point? and how much of it was actually you just liking nini as a character more than anyone else. you can't convince me you like ricky. so what exactly was the motivation?

anyways, no excuse or speculation will make rina not endgame. complain about the technicalities all you want. it's not amounting to anything. and maybe re-read some of those post season 1 interviews. they're more telling than you might think.

this is so awkward because you act like i'm mad because i'm a rini shipper when if you look at what i said i was actually rooting for rina (literally go into my rina tag and you'll see lol) but my actual issue was how poorly handled rina was after season 2 and how forced it felt. there was a way to make them work because it is a fact that they only happened because of olivia leaving (which is fine, every tv show needs to adapt to actors leaving) but they shoved all these phony backstories and ruined the build up for portwell (who i didnt care for) and then shoved all the other character's development aside just so they can put ricky and gina's love story at the forefront. they ruined ej's development and even made ricky become a total asshole just so they can make rina make sense and yet the only people who cared for them were the twitter fandom, because that's who tim based all of his decisions on.

and we know rina were gonna be explored because they literally were where did i deny that??? they were explored for the first season and a half but then they ended them and made both of them move on. and ricky and nini ending on bad terms at the end of season 2 doesn't mean they weren't going to be explored as most endgame couples tend to only really have their time in the sun during the last season anyway. but the difference is that rini were still in a story together, whereas rina barely spoke for four episodes so i'm really not sure what you thought you were cooking but we need to get you out the kitchen cos BOOOOOO

THINGS WOT I HAVE LEARNT AFTER BEING VIRTUALLY HOUSEBOUND FOR 3 YEARS THAT MAY BE HELPFUL TO THOSE IN SELF ISOLATION AND/OR LOCKDOWN DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

(Background: I have a lifelong disability and am a wheelchair user. After surgery I’ve basically been stuck living and sleeping in one room for three years. These are things I have learnt which may help, though with the caveat that everyone is different, and baseline mental health varies.)

1. YOUR MENTAL HEALTH WILL PROBABLY SUFFER - and although humans are social creatures, even the most introverted will chafe against boundaries enforced upon them by circumstance. The degree to which it suffers will be related to your mental health baseline and physical health. Understand that this IS NOT YOUR FAULT. Stimuli and enrichment methods are required. It’s why animals need such things in zoos and conservation parks. This leads us on to my next point.

2. COMPREHEND WHICH ACTIVITIES ARE ACTIVE AND PASSIVE FOR YOU Spending your confinement solely doing passive things (watching TV, Netflix, browsing the internet, scrolling through the internet) will take a load off your brain and make the time pass quicker. But if that’s all you do, the sense of disconnection increases over time. Activities which require you to *do* something, even if it’s just engaging your motor skills via video games, or lifting some cans of beans, or actively reading - these deliberate acts foster a tiny sense of achievement which gives your brain a dose of helpful chemicals. If you want to consider your activities, look up the work of Marshall McLuhan as regards “hot media” and “cold media” (See https://mediawiki.middlebury.edu/MIDD…/Hot_versus_cool_media for basic premise.) Balancing out your media intake with hot and cold activities keeps your brain active and pumping tasty neurotransmitters.

3. LIMIT YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE TO SOCIAL PURPOSES. Infinite scrolling as found on many social media platforms is a hot medium, as per McLuhan. The reason Likes exist is to give that little spike of interactivity. It’s not a conspiracy to say many platforms are designed to keep you on them so they can show you more ads. (See also https://www.theguardian.com/…/has-dopamine-got-us-hooked-on… which explains the brain chemistry angle) However, DM’s and other messaging faculties are supremely useful. Use them to interact with your friends, indulge your fandom theories. Person to person interaction requires and enhances deep-seated neurological and biophysical reflexes. Text your mates. Skype/Facetime or otherwise call them. Use the technology of the 21st century for genuine social ends, deliberately. Catch up with their lives one to one or in groupchats.

4. PICK TIMES TO CHECK THE NEWS AND STICK TO THEM. This relates to point 3 - unfortunately we live in a 24hr news cycle, with constant liveblogging of important issues. This means that we’re constantly streaming anxiety inducing situations into our brains JUST IN CASE. That’s not helpful, particularly when you can’t actually DO anything about those events - the urge to DO something is why people are panic-buying. It’s a very basic primordial need to grab resources for defence. By picking times of the day to check news, you are again, making a DELIBERATE CHOICE, enacting some small level of agency, while at the same time limiting anxiety-inducing stimuli. If the news gets too much, then don’t check it as much - or at all - and do something else.

5. IF YOU DO THINGS WITH FRIENDS, SEE IF YOU CAN DO THEM ONLINE. Run that game of DnD/Other TTRPG you’ve been meaning to. Hold your book club online. Have a few drinks online over voice-chat if you are missing the pub. Hold watch parties for your favourite shows. The key, as ever, is to be engaged rather than passive. It’s harder if you’re ill, yes, but it can be done.

6. USE YOUR IMAGINATION TO CREATE THINGS. Write that fanfic. Start that novel. Design that game. Doodle. Paint. Humans have been creating since the day we became human. Consider things from the perspective of a pre-modern person. Make handprints on your own personal cave wall - contact each other and tell spooky stories. Build a complex fantasy world. Write an account of your confinement for some person to find pieces of years after you’re gone from the world. Think about a problem, and learn how to solve it via taking online classes (See http://www.openculture.com/freeonlinecourses) Write an essay on your chosen passion or hyperfixation - nobody needs to read it but you. Treat yourself to intellectual stimulation, if that’s your thing.

7. IF YOU HAVE A SPIRITUAL. RITUAL, OR MEDITATIVE PRACTICE DO IT. It doesn’t matter if it’s not perfect, or limited in scope. This also includes atheists and those who despise woo - you have personal rituals, things you do that have Meaning to you as a person. Maybe it;s alphabetizing your music collection, or spring cleaning or cooking your favourite meal like grandma used to make. Humans have patterns they perform. When you perform them DELIBERATIVELY (or dare I say MINDFULLY) you become aware that these are the scaffolds that structure human life.

8. STRUCTURE YOUR TIME. Following on from 7, we often don’t realise the structure of our lives until it is disrupted. When that’s removed, our minds can go into freefall. If you’re isolated/in lockdown, oftentimes you won’t be able to access those structures. Rather than wait for them to to become accessible again and risk a period of feeling lost and directionless, which can enhance depression and anxiety, it’s best to develop a new structure based on the resources you have. It can be as loose or as strict as you like, but sticking to it allows us to develop a rhythm which makes time pass in recognisable fashion and gives us a sense of being-in-the-world as some sort of engaged process.

9. KEEP YOUR SLEEP PATTERN REGULAR AND LONG ENOUGH. The key here is REGULAR. Following on from 8, it’s important to keep your body well rested, as this aids your immune system and cuts down on the possibility of your body having to deal with stress . If you’re ill it’s harder to keep this regular, because sometimes your body just needs sleep to regenerate NOW. Equally in isolation, particularly if you’re feeling mentally low, it can be tempting to sleep forever, because y’know, you’re feeling low and what’s the point. (Of course the point is why we have 8 in particular, along with all the rest.)

OBVIOUSLY EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. Particularly for those with disabilities or chronic illnesses, we may be even more limited in our activities while isolated than able bodied folks. That said, the key is to remember that certainly during this pandemic, and otherwise YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE FEELING THIS WAY. Rubbish as it may be, many are in the same boat. If it pleases you to, seek them out - see what commonalities you have, what hopes and dreams and fascinations you may share. FIND THE OTHERS - it’s what humans have always done.

-Okay he is rather subtle with his simping. 

-He won’t straight up kiss the ground you walk on. 

-BUT he will be kinder and a little softer. 

-Maybe sometimes to the point others notice and it’s not a good look on him. 

-Or at least that’s what he believes. 

- “I have a reputation to keep, baby.”

-That was said behind closed doors at 3 am on the rare occassion he stayed past his bed time.

-Speaks rather softly after a while, showing you how to correctly cut the ingredients and how to stir the mix without making a mess. 

-He will just leen on the counter and watch you add all the ingredients with that little concentrated pout on your lips. 

-His heart goes oops. 

-He will be so engrossed with your beauty that you’ll have to give him a small shake when you need him. 

-Pretends to enjoy what you’ve made if you messed it up somehow but will give you honest feed back and advice so you make something edible next time.

-You tend to spend the night at his dorm and he loves it. 

-It’s usually on accident.

-You cuddle him while he goes to sleep and your plan is to get up and leave once you have taken your fill. 

-But he is warm and oh so cuddly that you fall asleep as well. 

-He wakes up around ten o’clock everytime to make sure you left and when he still feels you next to him he just lets out the most genuine smile. 

-He will pull you flush to his chest *if you are not already* and take in your scent saying a little I love you before going back to sleep. 

-The next morning he will wake you up before anyone else gets up and walks you to your room. 

-Thankfully you are on the same floor so you don’t have to go far. 

-He always walks with you to and from class no matter his mood.

-He monitors his tone when he can help it and will warn you when his mood is really awful. 

-In general it’s the little things with him not grand gestures and all out simping. 

Kaminari Denki

-Worships the ground you walk on. 

-All out simping no shame. 

-He will straight up give his soul for you. 

-And he is rather proud of that fact. 

-The polar opposite of Bakugou. 

-And he can get on everyone’s nerves with his simping. 

-Picks you up form your dorm room every morning, carries your bag to class and opens every single door you come across.

-Gives you his food if you show the slightest of interest in his meal. 

- “Denki I just want a bite.”

- “I CAN GET ANOTHER ONE BABY!”

-Calm down sir....calm down. 

-Has canceled game night because you had period cramps. 

-The thing with that is you never actually asked him to come cuddle or something you just mentioned that you were heading to Recovery Girl for some pain killers. 

-Man was waiting you at her office in -0.5 seconds. 

- “I thought you were playing COD.”

- “I canceled.”

- “YOu wHAt?”

-Bakugou legit thinks you are the reason Kaminari keeps blowing them off. 

-That you are some type of overly clingy girlfriend.

-Has gone off on a russian dude because while you were playing COD together he said something about girls being really bad at video games.

-He’s a mix of Bakugou and Denki.

-He likes being subtle and showering with affection behind closed doors but also will be at your beck and call. 

-In your or his room he likes to hold you close like really really close.

-You are watching something on Netflix?

-Will rest his head on your shoulder. 

-You do the same really because he is a very very touch starved baby and he needs more love. 

-He Likes to bring you food that Fuyumi makes. 

-He visits his sister on the regural so he always or almost always comes back with a small bento box with your name on it in Fuyumis delicate writing.

-Fuyumi loves you and she knows what a simp her baby brother is for you.

-In public he isn’t on Denki’s level.

what about like the moment you open up about your relationship with kazuxiao the fans who were already seeing that happen were celebrating and on both of y'alls insta or something is where you announce and it's like a picture of all 3 of you chilling together or something

and then when they finally appear on a variety show they're just questioned throughly and they talk about how you guys meet and what they like about you

ok but the moments where you just feel sort of insecure since being an idol is hard and you're technically dating your seniors and you're just hit by the antis who are against yourself relationship so you lock yourself in your room in your dorm by yourself to cope. your roommate (can be whoever) contacts them both and they immediately come over and come in and offer soft kisses and soft murmurs of reassurance that they'll never leave you and that everything's gonna be ok.

side note i can see xiao just being a whole meme without realizing?? for like variety shows he's just known for his dead pan expression and then i can see him being so competitive on shows like running man..mans ripping tags left and right, while kazuhas just hiding in a weird spot or something

kazuha on the other hand i can see him being a troll, he likes to mess around with the hosts of the show and manages to mess up some of their plans, he also likes messing with his group members, where xiao likes to say that kazuha looks innocent but is a part of the devil line with venti

onto albedo i can see him like answering questions in his vlive and fans realize that a lot of his songs are more romantic and sort of pining?? and they're asking where the motivation is from. he answers that it's just something that he saw recently so he felt motivated (it wasn't the fact that he had realized that he was 100% in love with you)

but like all of this mans inspiration comes from you, he's had multiple songs dedicated to you before your relationship was even open to the public, and when your relationship finally does, it just clicks for fans and it suddenly makes sense, your ship name trends worldwide for the day

but how you and albedo met, i can see both of you guys being in the industry already and you guys are sort of know each other but it was for a one time off collab with other artists involved so you didn't really talk with each other. like i said before albedos a solo artist while i can see you being a part of a popular group already. but then both of your companies decided to do another collab and especially picked you two since you guys already worked on a collab before.

at first it was like awkward since albedos really socially awkward but then things click when you guys start writing the song together. everything just matches so well?? and you guys just compliment each other?? and that's when you learn of albedo just staying at the studio so late so you often bring food. this leads to you guys getting closer and albedo even stops his work just to talk to you more. when your song comes out and everyone is waiting for the stage, there's just so much tension?? but the good kinda and everyone is awed by the song and the vocals coming from you and albedo.

i can also see the both of you guys appearing on variety shows together too, like appearing on a show where you two travel to another place and experience the culture there, with albedo being your tour guide and showing you all the famous places (one of the many times where fans were awed by his research and knowledge) and then if you guys were to appear together again after you guys reveal your relationship, a lot of the times they show idols as they wake up, they'll see you and albedo being clingy af to each other.

on another side note, albedos totally a troll on variety shows, he likes messing around with the hosts and other contestants since a lot of the time he's not really interested in the show itself, it's more for publicity. however, when he first appeared on a show with you fans noticed that he actually seemed interested for once and that's where your ship name started.

albedos totally a golden child tho, he's like basically perfect in everything so a lot of the times variety shows don't catch him slipping, however the one time that he did was when you were mentioned, the clip of with his ears bright red was trending for a couple of days :)

Okay okay but like for the 'announcement' picture, what if it's like those photo booth pics (but like each picture you need to scroll through like on Insta) where it's cute and wholesome! The three of you are having fun wearing some silly glasses or hats, doing peace signs or finger hearts....and the very last photo is the three of you sharing a kiss- or, at least trying to.

It's sweet, a little silly, and most of your fans take it really well! After all, they can see the chemistry that you share and can't deny that the three of you would have a good relationship.

As for the insecurities of dating your seniors, Kazuha and Xiao are quick to knock back any of those worries. They love you so, so much and hate the fact that something like that makes you doubt for a single second. If anyone ever tries to bring it up, you know that they're going to immediately quip back.

Naturally, you're roomed with Venven :D He's technically an up-and-coming after he stopped doing idol stuff for a few years, so not only does he know the ropes, but he's also one of your biggest fans and biggest supports (outside of Kazuha and Xiao).

Though he's silly and light-hearted, he's quick to recognize when things are serious and need handling.

So as soon as he sees that you're not doing so great or if he notices the comments on your posts are going in a bad direction, he speed dials Xiao and the two of your boyfriends are right at the door in under 15.

Not only are they fast about it, but they have all your favorite snacks, a movie or two, some popcorn, and a ton of love and affection because they'll be damned if their love is going to be affected by some asshole's comments about their love life! What do they know anyway??

BUT THE GAMESHOWS

Xiao would most certainly be super intense with those. He just can't help it--competition drives his blood and makes something snap in him. He's dead serious about doing well, regardless of the game. I actually have never watched said game shows, but--

Like...he's out for blood. No one is safe. Not even you or Kazuha if you're on opposing teams, though he'll be a bit more gentle. Maybe even with the hint of a smile while you have an expression of utter shock at the fact that he's just so fast-

Or if it's not a game show and instead you're doing some sort of idol group activity with a few others to get to know each other?

Someone suggests ping pong and, knowing how competitive Xiao gets, he's pitted up against Tartaglia and man. That's scary. There's no doubt that someone would clip the video and make it into an overly-dramatic retelling complete with music.

Hilarious.

As for Kazuha! He'd be a bit of a mish mosh! He enjoys poking fun at others, and he's so sly! Those poor hosts don't realize that he's goading them on, but sure enough--he is. Who knew that his charming smile and mild-mannered attitude could be so devastating?

But even then, he's mostly wholesome! There's a lot of little clips, mostly of your doing, of him in a 'kiss the chef' apron getting caught off guard while cooking something up. The videos aren't great because you're giggling while recording and he ends up placing the ladle down calmly before wrapping you up in his arms. Half the video ends up being the two of you laughing and joking while it's pointed at a weird angle towards the counter.

Sometimes it'll point just right and you'll get a half-blurred view of Xiao sitting at the kitchen island with his reading glasses perched on his nose and book forgotten. He tends to get up and join in for a few smooches before reminding Kazuha of the food that's still cooking.

Albedo!! He absolutely is the golden child. He's fantastic handling things under pressure in a cool, calm manner. Handsome, charismatic, incredibly smart--man's hit all the stops and just keeps going.

It's not until it comes out that the two of you are together that his cool façade (hardly one, though) falters and at the mere mention of you, he'll go soft. There's a tenderness in his eyes, a small smile on his lips, and his blush? Absolutely adorable. How can anyone object when he's obviously so in love with you?

And the idea you mentioned with the two of you traveling and experiencing stuff together sounds so cute (':

There's also a few times where you two have gotten lost in the new places, more because you're both so busy taking in the sights to realize you've taken five wrong turns- But then you make it into a whole adventure, foregoing the map and deciding to wander around. What better way to discover and learn about somewhere than getting lost and wandering?

You find quite a few hidden gems this way since otherwise you'd be hitting more popular areas!

Wait- do they really show idols waking up???

Ahh regardless, Albedo's definitely a cuddler. He loves it, can't get enough of it. It's not often that he gets a good night's rest, but with you it seems like he's fully recharged and ready for the day! It's cute too because it doesn't matter--big spoon or little spoon, you on his chest or him resting on yours. Even a few times with you facing each other with your hands intertwined.

I also agree that Albedo would mess with the game show's hosts and contestants. Not only would he, but he'd be entirely smug about it (after all, we need to have that #smugbedo going on).

No doubt, there's been times where the cameras even focus/zoom in on him where he's sitting because he's got that smirk on his face.

Wow I didn't knew L had behaved just like Near in the movies and said that Light is just a murderer. I have always hated Near but now I really hate L too. I think he doesn't deserve to be with Light honestly. I love Lawlight but I really need to consider other shipping options because frankly Light deserves better. He shouldn't be with a hypocrite like L. Like okay L, if Light is 'just a murderer' than you are also 'just a torturer who violates human rights and privacy'. At least Light is a better person when he isn't under the effect of Death Note, like in the Yotsuba arc. What's L's excuse? He wasn't affected by Death Note at any point. If this is how he normally behaves I wonder how he would get if he got under the Death Note's effect. Also I understand you hate Light, but stop trying to deny his talents lol. I am pretty sure in the manga Ryuk says a line about Light being popular because he can cook and sew. So stop pretending that he can't cook.

Nobody on this blog is forcing you to ship lawlight or like L my good bean, and lots of fandom people don't like L or lawlight and have different otps for Light as well. I actually agree with you about a lot of the stuff that makes you dislike L, but he's still my fave character... 🤷‍♀️ though I don't base my idea of him off that movie either. And I legit couldn't care less about lawlight in that movie nor basically every other version of the story except the animanga. I think it's fun as a little background unresolved tension thingy in the manga, and that they have the best and most interesting and funniest chemistry there. But in most everything else apart from that and the anime I don't usually feel anything too intriguing between them, honestly...

Also if you were referring to me personally there at the end because of my headcanon about his cooking skills, I don't actually hate Light at all... he's one of my all-time favourite characters, and as I've said many, many times on Tumblr already I think he's the most interesting one in the series. I personally like when characters are sometimes flawed or imperfect, and find it boring and unrealistic to pretend like they're not. So I'm not usually basing things like cooking headcanons off how much I like or dislike a character when I post 🤔

August HCs!!

since it's his month, here's some hcs i have of him bc he's my fav month man!! (bc he's not dead and he's just in hiding and

August has the gaudiest fashion sense out of Gekka. If he's not wearing his usual work outfit or a disguise, he'll be wearing clothes that are so mismatched. He also has a collection of patterned shirts that makes him look like a dad. Chikage and Hisoka got him a "government agents want me, fish fear me" shirt as a joke, and August began wearing it around the hideout unironically (July raised an eyebrow at his shirt but didn't say anything else).

He hates being called dad by Chikage and Hisoka since they barely have a 5 year gap (or even less, who knows). But when they were younger and the two were attached to his hip, they'd call him big brother. In the present time, they only call him dad to annoy him.

If he wasn't in the organization, he'd probably be a pharmacist or a teacher! In an AU where he survives, I love to think that he works together with Sakuya at Veludo Daycare! Other than framing himself as an innocent person, I also like to think that he's friends with Sakuya because he can get info about Chikage and Hisoka from him (and Sakuya reminds him of the two when they were younger).

Insomaniac. He's as worse as Chikage sometimes, but he actually remembers that being a secret agent doesn't grant you immunity from basic human needs. August takes care of himself for Chikage and Hisoka. He's also wrestled Chikage into bed more than Hisoka can count.

His inability to cook is affected by his expertise in chemistry. He forgets that chemistry =/= cooking so it isn't uncommon to hear him muttering formulas while cooking. He tried making (read: experimenting) marshmallows and Hisoka wouldn't even dare touch them.

August adores music, but he can't sing at all. Yes, he can imitate a voice, but singing is out of his range.

His favorite genre of books are fantasy and fairytales. Though he knows its impossible to get out of the Organization safely, he has wishful thinking and loves imagining him and his family as normal people. He also loves reading myths and other things that Chikage and July may deem useless for an agent. He also believes in reincarnation.

Despite his awful sense of fashion, he does know how to put together a good disguise, complete with accessories and a story, and regardless of gender.

He used to have long hair that he usually ties back, but after a mission, he began getting regular haircuts (courtesy of Chikage).

August is the only one who knows July's true name.

He thinks of himself as a monster and an awful person sometimes, and it's up to Chikage and Hisoka to remind him that he's not. They're also aware that he has nightmares (August refuses to let them know) and they'll try to do what they can to cheer up August if he's feeling down.

When August caught wind of July's plan, he began compiling all their pictures together (since he had no plan of letting Chikage and Hisoka know about it). Chikage finds the album later.
