me at the lakehouse last weekend: Hey... hey. Can you stop she/her-ing me to death please. It makes me feel like you still only see me as a woman.
My conservative gay uncle, looking me very earnestly in the eye over the kitchen counter: It just so difficult because my whole life I've known 'they' as a plural pronoun.
me: Stop— because you definitely already use it singularly when you refer to someone whose gender is unknown.
my transphobic mom who loves grammar: Yeah like 'somebody left their keys. We should find them.'
him: o____o
me: o____o
and then believe it or not after 2 years of me being out as non-binary he may have actually corrected himself and used 'they' pronouns for me like twice.
He also spent a bad 30 minutes trying to out-debate my socialist politics and convince me that people are good for nothing except being worker bees for the economy but that's another post.

Ok ok I’ve been thinking a lot about @morganbritton132 Steve’s older siblings au and I love the idea of him becoming an uncle at 2 because of the crazy age gap. Then I also started thinking about the theory of Gareth and Steve being cousins but may I raise you one better and say Uncle Steve and his nephew Gareth. PLEASE ITS BEEN PLAGUING MY BRAIN. It’s so funny. Like imagine the shit he’d get from the boys. Eddie constantly making jokes about banging Gareth’s uncle. Gareth is disgusted by the whole thing.
#this is nothing but I had to share my rambles#it’s just such a funny idea to me#like Steve and Gareth both hate being uncle and nephew#they don’t tell anyone#until Gareth blurts it out in disgust when Eddie says he’s dating Steve#i’m obsessed#st#stranger things#steve harrington#gareth stranger things#Steve ‘the hair’ Harrington

so i work for a small regional museum. remotely, i should add. the museum itself is about 2000km west, so i've never actually been there but i research and write articles about local history for them. and because the town was only formally settled in the 1920s and a lot of the museum's supporters are older, the majority of the history i write about is within, or just outside of living memory. this means that people will comment on our posts with memories or connections of their own. they'll tag their friends and family and say 'remember this?'
a few week ago, i wrote a week's worth of posts about immigration, largely displaced persons in the aftermath of the second world war. there was an outpouring of memories and people tagging their family members and sharing them. our notifications were blowing up with people saying "thanks for writing about my uncle" and "i knew them when i was young, but i never knew their story" and "she looks so beautiful here" and "our families used to get together for dinners, i'm still friends with his daughter."
regular people, non-historians, are inclined to think of history as a monolithic past leading up to the present; an easy timeline of textbook names and events. and we think of museums largely the same way. you have the louvre and you have the smithsonian and maybe a modern art museum or a niche museum for skeletons or canoes or one specific guy. museums are reserved for the big things, but they're also for the little things and people that will never be in textbooks.
and i'm thinking about the way people responded to those posts, seeing their own history remembered with the same reverence as the big stuff. maybe you never knew the people being written about, or maybe you did, and for a few days, they are alive again, and your neighbours and your classmates and your councilmen are remembering your family, and they are alive.
#there are many names in history#ok 2 rb if u wanna#this is a pointless text post#the same thing happens with the lighthouse. people come down BEAMING because there's a picture of their relatives in our displays#and they're always SO proud to say 'my dad/uncle/grandpa was a lightkeeper here' or 'i grew up on (x) island nearby'#greatest (s)hits

No but I gotta talk about Medusa for a minute actually.
It's been. A very long time since I read the PJO books so I don't exactly remember how Uncle Rick presents Medusa in the book. But the way the show introduces her myth? Fascinating. For me as a Greek mythology enthusiast, that is.
The show makes Medusa a victim of Athena. Of course, the show is mainly for kids, so they can't exactly say that, hey, kids, Medusa was Athena's priestess and she was raped by Poseidon, YEP, or protagonist's father, IN Athena's temple, nah, that's neither kid-friendly nor does it endears us to Poseidon. Not that Poseidon is very dear to us viewers/readers at this point, our narrator/protagonist can't stand his own dad.
But still what fascinates me is that even though they twisted the myth to ft the narrative they still managed to evoke Athena's curse as being actually a gift, and Medusa not feeling wretched over her condition but blessed.
Which is not a modern reading of the myth, actually. Saying that Athena couldn't punish Poseidon for his transgression and could only punish Medusa, but did so in a way that would give Medusa weapons to defend herself against whoever and whatever would try to harm her again, is a narrative that exists since Antiquity.
My point is that the re-framing of Medusa's myth, departing from the traditional, non-kid-friendly version while still incorporating both classic and modern elements, is a good frame of reference for the series (book and show)' entire approach to mythology. And I guess I'm saying that mostly for the non-book readers who are discovering this world, many of whom might be Greek mythology fans and might have gone "wait, why is Hades AGAIN presented as the bad guy when he's the chillest, most normal, most stable god in this entire pantheon", because that's a conversation the book fandom has been having (over and over again) for more than a decade.
Anyway, yeah. As a long time book fan and a show appreciative, here's my advice to anyone who knows WAY too much about Greek myths and still want to enjoy the ride without going every five minutes "wait, that's not correct": reframe. Contemporary rewritings, modern audiences and Fantasy genre.
#pjo series#pjo series spoilers#pjo#percy jackson#percy jackon and the olympians#rick riordan#medusa#greek myths#greek mythology#rapha talks#the funny thing is that one of the art exhibition i've been giving tours of these past couple of months is about goddesses#and it has some statues and objects about both athena and medusa so i've been talking a lot about these two for weeks now#so even though i still remember some from the books and i know damn well uncle rick's priority wasn't myth accuracy#i still got a bit floored by the planet-size holes in medusa's myth in the show#not enough to dislike the episode (au contraire i quite enjoyed it) but enough to feel compelled to say a word about it#(can you tell my special interest as a weird little girl was greek mythology and how it still is to this day...)

May I offer some Siffrins on this fine day
#keese draws#isat#isat siffrin#sasasaap siffrin#comic siffrin#I was going to do more doodles but I ran out of steam rip#anyways I have Many comicfrin thoughts but they are still in the oven a bit#but the main thing I wanna clarify is that comicsif’s loops started much earlier than the other two#as in. the beginning of their journey early.#which considering they were a part of the party from the start in this au their loops lasted a While#they ofc eventually started speed running it a lot more but even then it’d still take them at least a month#not counting looping forwards and backwards ofc#I wanna take a crack at drawing their party soon but I wanna do some more brainstorming first#I have very clear visions in my head for two of them and basically nothing for the other two#one of them is also there from the start and in fact she’s the reason siffrin came to vaugard in the first place#she was going to visit her family at home and they knew that a family friend of theirs had an uncle that lived there and decided to tag#along to say hi. unfortunately while they were at dormont something attacked the castle before they could go… go…#hm. that’s strange. a glitch rewind effect happened and I seem to have lost my train of thought. how odd#anyways they and their friend were quite shaken ofc but their friend is brave! so she decided that they needed to do smth abt this#at which point comicfrin was given the cosmic rundown on the timeloop situation#smth that would not be repeated for the other sifs lol#new game+

thoughts on thistle and yaad's dynamic that i vomited in the tags of another post but will now try to articulate here: they're not actually family, or at least they shouldn't be. not in a conventional sense anyway. framing them as uncle and nephew (even in a non-literal, silly fantasy world way) rides more on technicality than anything concrete.
what i mean by this is yaad calls thistle by name and says he and delgal were raised "like" brothers. he talks about thistle like he's an outsider imposing himself into the melinis' space, and it's clear that thistle was never legitimized as a member of the family. for thistle's part, though we don't know how he would treat yaad pre-demon brainrot, it's safe to assume based on the way he punishes him—turning him into a doll—and how little is shown in the way of any sort of relationship between them that thistle only cares* about yaad as an extension of delgal (otherwise i'd expect something like kabru and milsiril, because it's not like another complicated interspecies family dynamic would be out of place, yet there's next to nothing on them even in bonus content, just their scant interactions in the main story).
in essence, they're strangers to one another. thistle's desperation to preserve the illusion of a family, a model where he doesn't even fit, was the snare they were caught in for the past thousand years of stasis. yaad-as-nephew is a prop to uphold that illusion, and thistle is playing a role he's unfit to play. in the context of post-canon interactions, attempting to reconstruct that facade would only be a reenactment of trauma for them both (in a deeply compelling way i'd love to watch unfold, tbh), as that "uncle and nephew" framing places thistle in an implicit position of power over someone he's already traumatized through misuse of authority in the past, a role which also perpetuates his adultification and yaad's infantilization in turn. it'd mostly be an obstacle to any real connection.
best to burn the melini family bridge, i think, and if there's still anything salvageable left in the rubble, let something different supplant it.
#not to say i don't enjoy when they're portrayed as a weird set of uncle and nephew - that's really fun too#i think their history and shared connection to delgal would be a key element to their dynamic no matter what#and it's something they would tryyyy to make work at some point. for lack of other options.#it's not smn i take too seriously either! but thinking about it for more than 2 minutes makes me go oh yikes#i do think they could be family - i'm a certified sucker and sap so i want them to be - but#growth means moving past that more conventional way of thinking of family#side note as someone with a large extended family i DO have uncles who are younger than me lmao#but i'm viewing the whole uncle + nephew thing with thistle and yaad more symbolically for the purposes of this#additional note the fantasy age-fuckery and power dynamics at play means thistle has been in an actual position of authority#over his younger family members like any older relative would be in spite of his being quite young and immature#so. no. don't try to be his uncle anymore. and he isn't your nephew. and oh god he isn't your dead brother let it go. stop with the labels#don't try to resurrect that corpse (< writing them trying to resurrect that corpse as we speak)#not sure if these tags are coherent pero basta lang. yaad and thistle stay complicated forever that's all i want#feel free to chime in or disagree as i'd like to crack into this like crispy lechon and my opinions are subject to change#roomba media#thistle#yaad#thistle & yaad#melinis#dunmeshi#dunmeshiposting#dunmeshi spoilers#thistle dungeon meshi#dungeon meshi#edit: changed some inaccurate wording in this one whew. english

one of the things that fascinate me about thawne: yes, he CAN be normal with kids! surprisingly normal!
((not at all times, though. his mental illness still spills through and as usual he, in trying to manipulate or hurt others, spits out at them the exact stuff that would hurt him (or have in his childhood/barry's rejection interpretation) the most in the first place lmao))
but at the same time. his like second instinct when doing his bullshit is FUCK THEM (as) KIDS
(and, well. whatever this classifies as)
#whats wrong with him. seriously. he loves picking fights with literal children So Much#AND NONE OF THEM WITH WALLY ON THE MATTER OF BEING THE BIGGEST FLASH FAN. HOW DID THAT NEVER HAPPEN#about the middle page. honestly i DIDNT remember he is a Jerk in that way too until i checked his interactions with bart for this post#this man officially should not be allowed near children as a mentor.#just straight up drops ALL his insecurities on a poor kid in trying to make him feel ashamed. NO breaking the abuse cycle for this bad boy#the only thing he doesnt say is the direct 'you are a disappointment' altho the message is still the same 💀💀💀💀💀💀#AND I BET HES HELLA PROUD OF THAT. I MEAN CONSIDERING THIS FACT IG HE DOES TRY TO BE BETTER THAN HIS PARENTS. SOMEWHAT.#and omg he formulates his point like in problem based learning (leading the child to making the correct conclusion themselves)#im dying. professor to the fucking core.#and the way he feels the need to bring up flash facts in his appeal?? EO YOURE SO HOPELESS. THIS IS 100% HOW BART SAW HIM THROUGH#and god knows what he told thad promising to get him out of the speed force if he fought barry there and whether he was going to fulfill it#and do you even IMAGINE how FUCKED barry's mental condition would be growing up if thawne fulfilled his button threat#and i really REALLY wonder about the tornado twins and their relationship with 'uncle eobard' but that will be a separate post#he doesnt know any other way tho. and he might be actually mad at bart for not supporting his every action as The Flash#like. he tries to play family but the second they question he just goes WHATEVER. I DONT NEED IT. FLASH OF MY VISION RUNS ALONE#his problem is that he just wants attention. he doesnt see family/heroing for what 'its really about' or downsides that may come with them#everything is so idealized in his head. and the moment he faces reality with its complications the concept immediately gets antagonized.#and then he reconsiders and changes the conditions but fails each time never realizing the problem is his mindset and not everything else#black white at its finest yall#and man. RELATABLE.#also WHY is he standing LIKE A STATUE when appearing in front of bart????😭😭😭😭#poor museum rat has no idea what heroes in real life stand like#eobard thawne#professor zoom#reverse flash#the reverse flash#bart allen#the flash#dc

Nearing the end of my HL replay and I just gotta say Anne and I are a different breed. If my brother was adamantly searching high and low in crumbling ruins, reading ancient texts, casting Crucio on his besties, and still making house calls while I was cursed and basically dying I would maybe not be such a huge wimp about it
#mind you I'm seeing both sides of things as I type this#I simply Can Not Fathom her outlook on his actions but I also ignore red flags like it's my job#but is being a caring brother a red flag ??? no no decidedly not#don't come for me over this I think Anne is a complex character with her own trauma and what not but we don't get to SEE any of that really#I just get a front row seat to watching her side with her crusty uncle over her (big?) brother#like it's 1890 he won't get caught he just has to be gone after the crime is committed. shut your conscience up and say thanks#I need to lay off the wine my mind wanders too much when I drink and play video games#hogwarts legacy#sebastian sallow#anne sallow#a.txt

Me: —no my issue with the whole system is that I CAN'T PHYSICALLY WORK HARD ENOUGH OR LONG ENOUGH TO MAKE A LIVING
Rich Uncle: Well—
Me: Meanwhile Bezos is buying his seventh mansion!
Rich Uncle: HE EARNED THAT.
Me: Oh yeah?! What did he do to earn it?
Rich Uncle: He worked all his life!
Me: SO HAVE I! And I'm saying I can't even work hard enough to afford rent on a shack! So why can HE work hard enough to afford multiple mansions!? It's because he's exploited the labor of everyone working for him.
Rich Uncle: No no no no it's because he worked smarter.
Me: oooOOOoh, so intelligence is the key factor in being deserving of massive wealth. That explains why Elon Musk is one of the dumbest people on the planet.
Rich Uncle: He's... smart.
Me: pfffffffffffff hahahahaahaaaahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAA
Rich Uncle: He made good business decisions, anyway.
Me: So in order to make it I just have to do what Elon Musk did.
Rich Uncle: exactly.
Me: So first I've gotta figure out how to get adopted by a guy with an emerald mine.
Rich Uncle: Yep. *walks away*

okay.
so it's either a very fancy very nerdy little anvil paperweight
OR
little tyelpe had a teeny tiny forge-like dollhouse made for him by feanor, who painstakingly designed every tiny detail and made all toy equipment himself because tyelpe, too young to be in forge, insisted that he absolutely needs to be a smith like his father and grandfather and needs to begin learning now.
and who was feanor to refuse his only grandson who wanted to learn his craft when he only started to walk without bumping into everything? feanor would be elated and would spend hours playing with tyelpe in his little forge. it was before the silmarils when feanor had all the time in the world for his beloved grandson.
the anvil was one of many parts of that dollhouse, one of few that made it to beleriand and the only one that made it through to the second age with celebrimbor.
he could never make himself part with it.
#yeah#nothing better than taking a look at an item appearing for like 1 second and making a heartwrenching headcanon#i love stabbing myself with angst#i headcanon that celebrimbor was very young when they left valinor#not a toddler but maybe an equivalent of 7-8 year old#old enough to understand some things but young enough to be absolutely traumatized#based on that one absolutely amazing fanart of curufin and little tyelpe where he apparently had a nightmare#and curufin says 'no one is coming to take you' and tyelpe responds with 'but they took uncle nelyo'#i saw it some 3-4 years ago and i kid you not it randomly appears in my brain just to haunt me#so he is still a child and was allowed to take some of his toys and obviously his little forge had to come with him#not all of it only some parts because there were more important things to pack#and feanor promised him they would make the missing equipment together once they settled down and were relatively safe#and then he died#and then over the years some of the toys were lost and some were broken#and then celebrimbor was no longer a child and when they had to run he packed food and clothes and weapons not his toys#but this little anvil he would snuck into his pack anyway#and against all odds the anvil made it through the first age unscathed#if there was one thing reminding him of better times it was this#somebody fucking sedate me#brainrot has taken control over my every thought literally#celebrimbor#tyelpe#telperinquar#curufin#feanor#rings of power#beleriand#valinor#first age#silmarillion
