Weariness and hunger weighed heavily on everyone’s shoulders. After a long day of travel, the company was eager to unwind. They decided to detour into a town and stop at a local tavern. 

Thorin’s eyes scanned the room filled with rowdy patrons.

“Khuzdûl only,” he murmured to the group. “We don’t want any unwanted attention.”

Finding a table in the corner, you volunteered to order a round of drinks and headed to the bar. As you looked around, you noticed the suspicious glances your friends were receiving, and you felt uneasy. Was this a bad idea? Your thoughts were interrupted by someone bumping into you.

“Move the hell over,” the man growled, shoving past you. You tried to ignore him, focusing on gathering the glasses the barmaid had given you.

“What a waste of space,” his friend sneered, adding to the insults.

Having had a long day, you weren’t in the mood for this. You walked back to the table, distributing the drinks, and saw that the men had followed you.

“Hey, what’s a bunch of dwarves doing here?!” the first man slurred.

“And look at that, they’ve got a human with them,” he laughed mockingly. 

The company exchanged wary glances, speaking quietly in Khuzdûl. You ignored the man, trying to enjoy your drink, but he persisted with increasingly rude comments.

“I bet they make the human polish all their tools every night!" the one man barked out.

“How pathetic!” his friend added, both of them bursting into a roar of laughter.

“Why don’t you back off?” you said, your voice calm but firm.

The man sneered. “Or what? What are you going to do about it?”

Before you could respond, he shoved you, spilling your drink. That was the final straw.

“Listen here, asshole...” you began, launching into a tirade in your native language. The words flowed rapidly and fiercely. The man looked bewildered, unable to understand the language but sensing the anger behind it. The company stared at you, speechless. To punctuate your insults, you spat in the man’s face.

“Bullseye!” Nori joked, laughing with the company.

The man, now furious, lunged at you. Thorin and the company sprang into action. With 14 against two, it was an easy fight, and you managed to kick the troublemakers out. Dusting yourselves off, you nursed a few minor injuries but were in high spirits.

“Did you see that?” Gloin said, taking a swig of his beer.

“Didn’t take much to make them cry” Kili laughed.

“Hey, Y/n, I didn’t know you spoke another language,” Dwalin said, his tone filled with newfound respect.

You hear a roar of approval from the group, now all looking at you. 

Fili leaned in, “What language was that?”

Ori’s eyes widened with curiosity. “Can you teach us?”

You glanced at Thorin, who nodded approvingly, a rare smile on his face. “You’ve got more hidden talents than we realized. Well done.”

You smiled. The bond between you and the group felt stronger than ever.

Kind of love the idea that magic is considered defensive by nature because traditional weaponry is preferred throughout the kingdom. But then you have Sabo spinning that on its head constantly because he’s always running around inciting conflict like “I Crave Violence” which makes Ace's job exasperatingly harder but he takes it in stride because he also loves that side of Sabo.

And then I thought about it, and it would really make a lot of sense if Sabo wasn't a bystander most of the time 🤔 Of course when he wants to see Ace in action then he'll hold back but I am thinking specifically about someone commenting why Sabo is bothering to attack if Ace is there and Sabo responds with something along the lines of “Ace is here to protect me, but if I’m not in any danger, there's no need for him to step in.” So maybe they both flip stereotypes on the head and when Sabo is feeling antsy, feeling the need to expend some of his mana, he relegates Ace to a defensive role. Has him act only as Sabo's shield while Sabo takes on their assailant himself, using the chance to test out the new spell he's been developing. (Needless to say, would-be assassins of the crown prince end up on the wrong side of highly experimental magic more often than not.)

I agreeeee i think magic in this world serving a supportive and defensive role more than for attacking/protective through action(violence) is really fun and gives reason for the whole physical aspect of having a royal/kingsguard with traditional physical weapons as a whole

PLUS gotta pat yourself and myself on the back for slowly tuning the world building especially you for that brilliant write up about the aspects of mana, magicks spellwork and casting and how mages need/have specific affinity pools and if they dont they dont have much hope for casting magicks outside of those affinities because of the nature of mana and magic itself it makes sense that no one really looked into wielding it for damage purposes its too valuable in a sense

Maybe specifically to add more layers haha … :3c attacking magic is very unstable, volatile and siphons way too much mana from the caster to be a viable and safe method of warfare/combat?

The kind of control needed to do so? Possibly only sorcerers could manage it which Sabo would because aforementioned “craving violence” which is exceptionally endearing but exasperating for Ace but he L o v e s sabo and would follow him to the end of all ends should he have to

God i loveeee how confident and unified? Equal their relationship is as a knight to prince, Sabo is plainly aware of Ace’s role, he wanted him after all and Ace knows full well when to step in to protect his prince

firstly the way he kept his promise to bring mc to the airport it really broke me. it's so melancholic like there have been broken promises before but hyunjin wouldn't dare end their relationship on another one? you can still feel the love he has for t hemin the way he tiredly made his way to drive to their house and to the airport after he came back from his own long flight it honestly makes me insane.

i love how in the car there's this like faint and twisted idea of hope lingering between them. some part of them still longs for the other and it's right there they could just grab the very thing they yearn for but it's incomplete. it's not the same. honestly when mc mutters "idiot" it really made me think like are they calling hyunjin an idiot? or themselves an idiot? and ac i feel like they meant both of them are idiots for allowing themselves to end up in this awkward but necessary situation.

there are some unresolved feelings and unanswered questions while they sit in silence on the way to the airport, but the airport scene™️ gives them both the closure they need. they're not getting back together, no matter how much one might like, but the tension in the car shows a sliver of hope that they would and i feel like it really emanates in your writing and makes me as a reader reader hope for a happier ending as well. also the shaky "fuck" describes my feelings as i read this as well thanks btw 🥲

and this is all from my own mind but i imagine reader saw a photo or maybe got an invitation to hyun's wedding and they realize he's okay and it makes them reflect on themselves and with a heavy heart they realize theyre okay too. the worst part is there's no definitive point where they felt or "became" okay, because like you said, time is the best medicine and gradually mc just healed. but knowing that hyun is okay and has moved on kind of popped a bubble of reserved feelings and its not necessarily sad its just kind of disheartening or numbing?

I LOVE HIORI IN THIS SERIES TBH he’s like karasu x y/n’s biggest shipper (besides y/n’s bff) but also kind of their weird little freak child?? idk how to put it but karasu + y/n both feel like they are probably role models of some sort for hiori (which will be shown a bit more in the next continuation i hope) so he kinda just follows them around as he has been so far and at some point they just give up and pretty much adopt him. like yeah that’s their son what abt it (this is based on that one scene of karasu and hiori in the epinagi movie where karasu looks like he’s taking his child [hiori] to the doctor’s office for the first time because his wife [y/n] is busy 😭)
