Two takes.
That's all they had to get this right
But that's all they needed.
Rolin was right.
There is something really heavy in this scene.
Sam and Jacob have spent three years carrying these characters inside themselves. Hundred of late nights and dawns together (on and off set). Conversations, debates, meals shared, laughter and probably tears too. It's clearly been a journey for them, not just their characters.
But there's something else happening here too.
Eric saw it. He watched these actors go places others won't (or can't). Something challenging and authentic.
Even Eric (a veteran actor of 50+ years) said he's never been on a show like this, never pushed himself so far outside his comfort zone. But for this show, he's happy to do it because he knows he can trust them.
Eric nailed it when he spoke about the importance of trust and engaging with genuine emotions for both Jacob and Sam:
Jacob talks about Sam the same way,
This is why this feels so real.
Because it's true when Sam says:
And Jacob was only half joking when he said:
It's their complete trust in each other. It's their willingness to engage truthfully with painful emotions.
Shared grief and shared sorrow hurts, and Jacob and Sam aren't holding anything back. They feel safe going to places that are deeply painful and hard. Ugly and nasty. Full of regret and remorse. And genuine love.
This is why it feels so truthful in that moment.
This is why they only needed two takes.

charlie's low empathy/high sympathy desperation to help people without ever really understanding WHY they feel the way they do + vaggie's complex about needing to be useful to the people she loves or else she's worthless = charlie completely mistaking vaggie's self-sacrifical behavior for an expression of love and not the trauma response that it is, because all she's grasping are the literal words out of vaggie's mouth and not the alarming nuances of terrified self-hatred lurking underneath

"Maybe I needed it once. But I trained here, with The Flying Graysons, before I trained with you, Bruce. You know what the key is to a good trapeze act? Letting go...trusting that there's someone on the other side to catch you. You taught me a lot. But I learned from them to leap into the light. We're not the same, don't you see, Bruce? I had you." -Detective Comics #1074
hang on a minute y'all, I need to go scream into the abyss

my favorite hc is that the chb head counselors (specifically the ones who were there and experienced the manhattan battle) are best friends.
they have sleepovers in the poseidon cabin (since it's just percy and tyson), they have monthy group outings where they just go out and get to be kids, sally invites them over at least once a week for dinner, they walk to activities together, they're so clingy it's ridiculous.
the campers who experienced the battle get it, because there's only so much death and parentification a literal teenager can take before needing to rely on others, so seeing percy carrying will piggy-back out of the med cabin, or watching clarisse chasing one of the stoll brothers around camp, or seeing annabeth, chris, and katie engaged in a heated debate over which area to plant the newest strawberry field, it's all normal to them.
they will absolutely die if they are not within twelve feet of each other, they legally have to be around each other at all times or else they will lose it. when percy got back to chb after his disappearance, the head counselors spent the day inside the poseidon cabin, all piled together in a demigod puppy pile, percy at the center with clarisse's elbow in his ribs, katie's knee hitting his temple, one of the stoll brothers attempting to use his knee as a back rest, pollux's hand dangerously close to smacking him in the face, and the biggest, happiest smile on his face.

Papae Solas is incredible conceptwise, but as an angst demon, I MUST make it a torment. its like my only biological imperative is to make things much much worse. anyway wouldn't it be fucked up if the timing of their breakup was juuust so, that he didn't even KNOW there was a child. Like it's not like Lavellan would be taking a toddler along with the party during Trespasser. If they broke up RIGHT BEFORE the final fight with Corypheus, then it's entirely possible neither of them would have known when Solas disappeared. It's not like Lavellan could track him down. Fuck, if they're bitter about it they might not even want to. it could cause so much fucking drama and problems i cant stop thinking about it
