Bigots and Failed Promises of Mass Effect games

(I had this thing in my drafts for almost a month, and it would have stayed there if not for the wonderful post by @androidtrashfire, because I saw it, and I was like: "Fuck it, I have to rant about these games." I love Mass Effect, and I really think we should critique it. We should criticize things we love because silence = compliance.)

So I was talking to @liss-art recently about the bigoted fans in the Mass Effect fandom, and I think I need to make a post about it because it's something that really, truly bothers me, and it needs to be addressed.

Canon

Mass Effect is a story about deeply flawed people with a lot of problems, and through them it touches on issues like xenophobia, sexism, corruption, elitism, morality, identity. That's why we like it, right? But why are there so many bigots in the fandom? My theory is that it happens because Mass Effect, for all its supposed complexity, only touches on these issues without giving any meaningful commentary on them.

Here are a few obvious examples:

The Quarians are a distasteful allegory of the Roma people (right down to their accents). They are persecuted and ostracized for creating Geth, but the game never gives us any socio-political reasons why the Quarians did that. They just developed real AI because they were naive and stupid? Or because they were the only ones smart enough to do it? Did they do it in secret? Why did other races not make the same mistake?

Same with the Batarians. Yes, the game mentions tensions between humans and Batarians because humans try to claim territories that Batarians think are theirs, but that's about it. Batarians are all racist slave traders and they're bad, don't think about it, here's some memes about 300,000 of them dying, good job. And yes, I know you can read more about their history in the Codex (why is it an Asari who writes about Batarian history,btw?), but it's basically the same thing as saying D*mbledore is gay (I really am sorry for this reference). If no one ever mentions this rich Batarian history, then it doesn't exist.

And please don't get me started on Hanar. They "mercifully" saved the Drell by inviting them to their planet, immediately assimilated them into their own faith and also put them in conditions where they have to train as assassins from the ripe old age of 6 and eventually die of sci-fi lung cancer. But don't worry about it, Drell actually love to serve the Hanar, they do it willingly and consider their servitude an honor. Do you really want to criticize some stupid jellyfish who talk funny? Do you really want to talk about why the so-called Council races do nothing about it? LOL

Another thing the trilogy does is present entire races, including humans, as amorphous blobs. Do all Asari believe in the same "goddess"? Do all Turians obey the same Primarch? Well, what's important is that all humans in this bright future speak English.

But what about the genophage? That's a profound story, right? Well, not really, and it raises more questions than it answers. We hear a lot about how brutal, aggressive, and short-tempered Krogans are, but every single Krogan we meet is extremely well-mannered, and they only resort to violence against other races in dire circumstances. So why not save them? Does the game really present you with this moral dilemma or not?

And can anyone tell me why Salarians are allowed to abduct and experiment on sentient beings, and why Turians are allowed to wage wars? Why does no one talk about Asari in this context?

I really want to say that at least the characters are well written, but I can't because they're not.

Kaidan is a good example of this. We are told about his implant, we are told that he has chronic pain, but do we see him suffer from it? Do we see him in those moments of weakness and vulnerability?

The scene where he gets annoyed with Jenkins acting like he's a circus monkey who has to do a trick and biotically throws a cup at him was cut from the game. We occasionally hear him mention some of the side effects of his migraines ("Too many lights, too much noise"), but that's about it. What has happened to "show, don't tell"? And no, I'm not saying that the writers should feed me the story or walk me through it. What I am saying is that if you gloss over your characters' mistakes, flaws, and circumstances, you're getting people to ignore them. Do people who call Kaidan "boring" and insult him think about how his chronic pain, his trauma from Brain Camp, and the loss of Jenkins and Ashley affect who he is? Hell no.

Thane is another great example. What Mass Effect is telling us as a story is that you can completely abandon your family and your child and be forgiven if your reason for doing it is good and heroic enough. Like avenging your dead wife, because of course there has to be a dead woman thrown somewhere.

Everyone's favorite Garrus (mine too) is a cop whose character arc basically consists of deciding that he is above the law (since the law forbids him from killing people he thinks should die) and then involving his squadmate/friend/partner (depending on your playthrough) in the public assassination of his former squadmate, whom he never even bothered to confront first. Are there any consequences for Garrus for his actions? No. Again, it's all glossed over, and that's unfortunate because it removes the conflict and therefore the character development and depth.

And if you're going to tell me that ME is just a space opera, and that I should just enjoy the spectacle and the romance, then I'm going to tell you that I know that, and that I think it's a wonderful spectacle, and that some of the romance subplots are absolutely amazing story-wise, but the superficial commentary (or lack thereof) on the most important issues that ME covers actually harms the audience.

Fandom

On the one hand, we have people making mods that remove all the clothes from all the female characters (or remove all of femShep's organs and replace them with giant tits). We have people reposting that horrible, horrible art of Miranda and Jack fighting, tearing each other's hair and clothes, and maleShep smirking and saying "I should stay". We have people who say ME2 is the best game in the series because "there are no f*gs". On the other hand, we have people saying things like "there are two Commander Shepards - female and the wrong one". We have people who say "only weird people play as dudebro in 2024". We have people who think that simply playing as a female character is some kind of feminist statement, and that it makes them better and smarter than everyone else (the same people who use the term "dude gamer" as an insult). And all of those things are kind of the trilogy's fault.

Both maleShep and femShep have the same story. The only differences are the romance options, sexist remarks directed only at femShep, and flirtations from various NPCs directed only at femShep. What this tells you is that sexism exists in the Mass Effect universe, and only women suffer from it. It also tells you that only women are worth flirting with.

Another thing this game does (and modern games like Cyberpunk do the same thing) is equate the female experience to the male experience by giving both femShep and maleShep the same lines.

So there are some mixed signals here. Sexism exists and doesn't exist in this universe, Shepard is both genderless and very gendered, romances with underdeveloped characters are all over the place, and bigots thrive in this kind of environment.

The lack of commentary, the lack of perspective, the disastrous worldbuilding allows you to freely choose your sexist, racist adventure and not be punished by the story in any way.

Mirrors

There's a passage from Solaris that I absolutely adore and think about often.

"We don't want to conquer the cosmos, we simply want to extend the boundaries of Earth to the frontiers of the cosmos. […] We have no need of other worlds. We need mirrors. We don't know what to do with other worlds. A single world, our own, suffices us; but we can't accept it for what it is."

I think that perfectly describes what Mass Effect is as a universe. And in a way, it's a reason why it's so compelling. It's just empty enough for us to invest in it, to fill in the blanks of that narrative with the stories of our own. And it's also a reason why this fandom is a fucking hellscape.

Anyway there is this new otome game out and it's called ✨What In HELL Is Bad✨

And I've had it on pre order (is that what you call it?) But didn't have the time to really open it up and explore the insides.

So let's do this together. Hopefully I can find it in myself to make fanfic on this cause I've been on the block for months.

That is an extraordinarily distinct shape each of these countries have. That's quite fun. :D

So little information that I got after clicking on them,

𝑨𝒃𝒂𝒅𝒅𝒐𝒏: This is a region that Asmodeus rules. It's a place where lewd and inappropriate things are quite the norm and you can see people doing the forbidden tango in a Walmart parking lot apparently. Just very normal you see? This is also the place where lunatic devils gather apparently. So... Psych ward here is top notch I guess.

𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒆 𝒍𝒐𝒔𝒕: This place is hell but not really (not sure what that means) and is ruled over by Lucifer but he isn't the king. Not really. He's more of... A person who just controls things... Dictator?? The description had a lot of yes but nos. And devils who gather here are apparently very hurt... Wounded. Emotionally maybe? Maybe this place has great therapy centers.

𝑵𝒊𝒇𝒍𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒎: This place is very military oriented and very much like a power house which is a surprise considering this place is ruled over by Belphegor, who btw is the demon of sloth. People of this place don't go anywhere alone and always move in groups (hopefully that's different when going to the bathroom) and they have great military power and a lot of the population is very physically stronge and... Solid.

𝑨𝒃𝒚𝒔𝒔𝒐𝒔: The most chill and fun place apparently. Full of casinos and entertainment shit. Didn't find this place too interesting. Apparently the people here get piercings from Beelzebub (the ruler here) to prove that they are a citizen? Which is kinda random but seems like a fun tradition, I would like to know the history behind that. And Beelzebub is apparently never around. Feels like bro doesn't wanna pay child support.

𝑮𝒆𝒉𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒂: Ruled by Satan. People here have a bicker gang type of aesthetic and they're the most kindeat demons you could encounter in hell but they do have a horrible temper and anger issues. Also this place is famous for having great sceneries. Which is great :)

𝑻𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒐𝒔: This place is by far the most advanced in terms of science and technology. And is also the richest country. (Like the country literally looks like a slab of gold, what did you expect?) And this place is ruled over by, you guessed it, Mammon! This place has the highest level of freedom and the people here trust Mammon a lot.

𝑯𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒔: Now... This place honestly sounded lowkey like a cult. Cause killing yourself to prove loyalty is pretty.. Um hardcore. Also this place is the most scary and terrifying place in hell.

When I hit that side of my screen, the one that has my front camera, is makes this bouing bouing sound. I'm not bothered by it but I'm intrigued for why that is happening. Is there a chance there are gonna be other countries on the other ends?

Ok that's very nice of them. To include both genders but it would've been even more great if they included a non binary option. Just a little more inclusivity for people who are non binary to feel more comfortable when playing. But again, this much of an option is a great improvement too, cause it's rare to see something like this, at least for me as most have she/her and the mcs tend to be female by default. (Unlike in Obey me)

belphie is one of the most socially involved characters i've ever had in my hands wherein his relationships are so close and impactful on him, and that's considerable! he doesnt know or deal with a billion people all at the same time, but he DOES live with six brothers and a human, and has to worry about others (two angels, one other human, two other Very Big Deal demons) at least occasionally. i have an understanding why the writing team sometimes feels really very rushed the further they go on with obey me im going to be real with you NGJSJF

again, it isn't just the number or proximity; belphies brothers are really very impactful on him, not just in past tense but in the ways they interact with each other, the ways they bicker or support each other or even the human, how belphie perceives these things. he's a more introverted character, but just as he's notorious for his introversion (sometimes levi calls him a fellow shut-in, and hes declined outings several times unless they suited his own needs and interests specifically [before being forced anyway usually]) he's also notorious for watching and listening to the ways the others talk about what's going on, each other, TO each other, how their bonds strengthen or weaken. he's very sensitive to being replaced or forgotten about, or treated as though he's dangerous or like someone doesn't know how to interact with him anymore after the attic incident.

all this to say, to write a rich and satisfying belphie, takes shaking off a lot more rust and getting used to writing several characters in a situation all at the sams time, which i've for some reason been very squirrely to do??? like i'm not allowed or something???? up to the challenge, if only for breaking this very strange sensation of 'oh thats not allowed ):' ON WHAT PLANET. WHEN AND WHY DID THAT HAPPEN

obviously the mc in a romancey otome game is supposed to move the story along in a way that's as generic and projectable as possible. there's still some personality there; a character that drives an entire family of fallen angels who've had repeated fallings out and coming together again moments and unites them is going to be a sort that's strong in mind and in heart, sure. this is a protagonist in a mushy gushy love game with some edge paint slapped over the top; something i love quite a bit, mind you, but... there's so much blank slate, and so much freedom.

what. am i going to do with you. somehow i did not anticipate The Main Character being something so potentially useful, but also requiring their own good bit of attention. so i should think about where they've been yoinked from and how that helps them adapt to the environment they're in. the mc also has quite the unique relationship with belphie, given the whole murder thing, and subsequent "oh btw the entire reason you did that? built on a lie. yeah everything you justified that with wasn't real. yeah now you both have to cope with that. and each other. yeah."

so winter being a big deal is sort of a big deal in itself. they both have made huge impacts on each other, and belphie's forfeited to them some of his JUST-FOUND FREEDOM to START his apology and that's. i mean god damn. winter knows he'd been trapped a long time, winter knows he'd been lied to, but that his feelings of neglect and betrayal aren't gone... but that also doesn't mean they're just fine now, either. he murdered their ass and he tried to do it again until he was told the truth and broke down as it sunk in fjdj not even immediately.

they have a lot of questions for one another, but also a lot of tension. delicious mix. how much i would love to really do something with that.

I think a lot of fans also forget that Obey Me is a mobile dating sim— it’s not gonna have the best writing ever. A lot of the time, the writing is going to be flat with plenty of plot holes because the devs don’t care that much. But that’s also why I love reading blogs like yours with character interpretations and theories! The story and characters truly lack some depth, but the fandom brings so much life to it. Mammon’s behavior in s4 could really just be poor writing and wanting to bring back the “haha look he’s a tsundere” lines… but thinking about it the way you do brings so much more enjoyment! Obey Me plot/lore is going to be whatever you make out of it!! (love ur blog a lot btw <3)

Plot and specially lore is going to depend on how you interpret it and the fandom definitely brings more life to the overall story

BUT

I don't agree with you about the writing being flat or lacking depth.

Some characters are severely underutilised and explored because the devs put more focus on others (eg: Asmo being pushed to the side in favour of Lucifer or Mammon) but even then those characters have their shining moments where they're given more depth (eg: the S1 conversation with Asmo & Simeon about Asmo's need to be pretty and Asmo vs Lucifer in the S2 RAD popularity contest)

So,

I definitely wouldn't say, "The story and characters truly lack some depth"

If you compare it to an anime or manga then obviously it's not going to hold up because it's not either of those things. But OM! is definitely one of the better written otome games out there and if you take the time to actually read it more thoroughly or if you take note of the little details you'd notice that it has a lot more depth that you'd expect. Don't just read the words, actually pay attention to their facial expressions as well.

One of my favourite instances of this is in S2 when the brothers find out that Diavolo, Barbatos, Simeon & Solomon were keeping secrets about MC's power which led to lucifer losing his memories.

Asmo asks both Diavolo and Solomon what was more or less the same question. Basically "You've been keeping secrets from us?" or something to that effect.

But his expression changes while he addresses them each separately.

When talking to Diavolo, Asmo's expression is angry - he's frowning.

But when he talks to Solomon, his expression softens and turns sad.

It's such a small moment that adds so much depth. It instantly shows that Asmo feels betrayed about Solomon keeping secrets from him. It gives a deeper insight into their relationship.

Detailed examples of where their expressions add depth to the story/are important

OM! is full of small moments like this - the most recent was from Lesson 69 when Mammon called Luke a chihuahua (link) <- this wasn't me filling the plotholes or speculating. This was literally just me stating what I saw on the screen. Just because I'm adding more words to describe what is happening doesn't mean I'm making it up or theorising.

If you clicked the links in my Mammon post that you're referring to in this ask you'd see that only about 5-6 of them are my theories. Almost everything else (there are maybe almost 15-20? links) is just me commenting on screenshots from the actual game. Literally just me pointing out or reacting to what the characters said. A few others are where the game gave me "1 + 1" and I went "Oh! It's 2!" (Eg: Mammon's lunch pancakes, Mammon seeing Luke as family <- which had already been stated as a fact in S3, I was just laying out all the s4 evidence that contributed to it). There are about 30-40 points in that post, and the ones without links are just me stating things Mammon has canonically said or done in S4.

As much as I love filling the gaps/plotholes none of that^ is me doing so. It's literally just me saying what happened in canon.......

Also, even with what I said in this post about why Mammon was acting more tsundere in S4, that really only applies to lesson 61-62 because after that he more or less eases back to how he is in S3?

Eg:

Walking around RAD and holding hands with MC

Standing up for MC in front of Mephisto

Asking Diavolo about the people who don't like MC so he can go fight them

Enthusiastically helping MC find the magic card

Blushing and looking bashful when MC calls him "cute" even though his brothers were there at the time

Liking a dating sim character because they reminded him of MC

Hugging MC for warmth

Telling MC they had a fiery personality with a cute side and that he wanted to know about all their sides

Turning to MC for support when he first confronted Simeon

Going on a cute taco truck date with MC

Bringing MC with him to confront Simeon for the second time and backing down when MC told him to calm down

Have yall who have problems with how Mammon acts in S4 just considered that maybe after three full seasons that heavily focused on him.....you're just not used to him being pushed a bit to the side and to, when he does appear, him not focusing all his overwhelming love on MC 24/7?

Which is a good thing in my opinion because:

1. I'm a shameless Mammon stan (as you probably know) and I miss him being in the game so often but it's good that everyone else (specially the new characters) are getting their time

2. From both a fictional and realistic standpoint it's good when a large part of a character/person's personality/drive/motivation/screen time isn't focused on their SO. It helps to better establish their character and shows that they're more secure in their relationship that they can stop clinging to their SO so much. It also allows you time to develop their relationships with other characters. I love Mammon from all 4 seasons but S4 Mammon has put a lot less focus on MC and because of that in the little bit of screentime S4 Mammon gets they've managed to give more insight into his relationships with Simeon, Luke, Raphael, Satan and, to an extent, even with Thirteen and Mephisto. We already know what MC and Mammon's relationship is like. We don't have a desperate need for more insight. What we do need is for him to grow as a character and interact more with the others outside of MC and so, obviously, because of that he'd spend less time swooning over MC. That isn't anyone being "haha look he's a tsundere"

You could look at point 2. and say "But this is a dating sim! They wouldn't care about other relationships outside of MC's romantic relationships! As a dating sim LI Mammon should spend all his screentime swooning over MC!" Except OM! did something no other dating sim I've played has ever done (and I've played a lot) it made MC wait one year in game time to have any sort of significant romantic interaction with the LIs because they were too focused on developing the friendships and platonic relationships between MC and the LIs, and sometimes even the relationships between the LIs. Even in S2 & S3 romantic interactions/relationships were pushed to the side in favour of solving the issues in different platonic relationships. MC's romantic relationships rarely have any drama, conflict in OM! mainly stems from the platonic relationships. So yes, 2. is important.

Yes, I went on a tangent and this isn't really what this particular anon was talking about but I really needed to talk about this too because a previous anon said that people were upset when Mammon didn't pay attention to MC 24/7 and the first anon in this thread thought Mammon was falling out of love with MC. (You don't need to be attached at the hip to be in love💀)

Overall, the main point of this ask & answer amounts to:

As much as I live for any type of praise or validation, I don't want any type of credit where it's not due.

Moving on suggestions, I'd really recommend Obey Me if you're looking for something very wholesome!

Obey Me doesn't provide routes like most of the games but I really like it this way!

This game is easier to play than any other.

You really don't have to spend real money in this game as there are tons of event giving you free things such as cards, APs, Devil Points and more! You can earn everything without having to use your real money. Thank you obey me 🧎🏽‍♀️

They use they/them pronouns which I find really pleasing cause other games are always a she/her and have a specific physical figure for the MC :/

Now let's look at games released by cybird company. (Ikemen Vampire, Ikemen Revolution, Ikemen Sengoku and Ikemen Prince)

5 love passes are given to you everyday so you can read it for free. But if you want to read more than 5 parts, you'd HAVE to buy the passes/tickets.

The storylines are amazing. Very interesting and angsty.

My fav of them all is Ikemen Vampire. It's about historical figures such as Shakespeare, Vincent van Gogh, Arthur Conan Doyle and etc being brought back to life by turning them into vampires. Each one of them suffers from something and you're the one who'll break it! ;)

Ikemen Sengoku is also about historical figures, but it's Sengoku Period. The MC travels back in time to the Sengoku Period, where the war is going on and she falls in love with one of them. This one is pretty nice and angsty too!!

Ikemen Prince is about choosing the next king for a kingdom called Rhodolite.

All the characters are called "Beasts" because of how they act. But they act that certain way because they went through a rough past.

You gotta make them human again :'D

I've only recently started playing so I can't say for sure but so far, I really love it!

It's about the MC magically entering another realm(?) where they live by using magics and all. Pretty interesting.

Chaotic Angel Twins (CAT XD). For those interested, I wrote some headcannons for these two as well. You can find it under the cut.

Aurelion & Auriel headcannons

As I said before, they are twins. A brother and a sister.

Both have eyes after their father and (unfortunately for him) temper after their mother.

They were born too early. Thanks to Azrael all ended well but for a few weeks they were very weak and needed extra care.

This is one of the many reasons Abaddon is aggressively protective of the little fledglings.

Their birth changed the old, disgruntled angelic general. Brought back something from the times when he was younger and less bitter. Something that warmed his stone cold heart a little and no one was more surprised by this change than Abaddon himself. But don't say it out loud. It works only for his kids. He still won't hesitate to quite literally hand your arse over to you XD

In the end, they pulled through the worst and grew up to be quite a troublesome duo.

Aurelion causes the most mischief. He's the troublemaker number one.

Auriel is more collected and very closely attached to her father but once an opportunity presents itself, she won't hold back from joining her brother.

They love Abaddon but they wouldn't be caught dead actually obeying their old man.

Of course, there are moments when they do listen to him but it's only when they don't feel like causing trouble or if they see that their father looks down in the dumps, utterly exhausted or downright pissed off.

They might be cocky most of the time but when Abaddon gets really angry they turn into absolutely different children.

No, he wouldn't cause them any harm, the worst punishment they can get is yelling, stern reprimanding, getting grounded or sent to Ardent Spire to help older angels if they do something particularly bad.

"With all due respect, Lord Abaddon, but is this punishment meant for them or us ?"

One of their favorite games is called "hijack a griffin". Need I say more?

There are sometimes days when their father doesn't feel like going anywhere and can't focus on anything due to phantom pains of his lost eye, like white hot metal jammed into his skull and Uriel has to take over his duties for the time being (you know migraines? Now imagine it centered on your eye and ten, or more, times worse).

This is the only occasion when the squabs don't mess around and simply stay with him, prattling about various things to keep him distracted, or blessedly dozing off on top of him as he rests, waiting for the pain to lessen.

Abaddon thinks they're too curious for their own good. Another reason for being always on alert.

Lay a finger on either of them and the last thing you'll hear is the sound of an absolutely ballistic archangel teleporting behind you XD

Before you ask, no, the twins don't respect authority. At all.

Their favorite victims are the Archons. "They get mad in very funny ways." Besides, there's something so satisfying about pranking an Archon..

They love going out to watch the Hellguard train. After all, they too are going to be warriors when they grow up.

Aurelion and Auriel are so notoriously mischievous that now whenever someone knocks on Abaddon's door, the first thing the archangel says is "What did they do this time?"

Their favorite way of messing with their father is tying his feet together or running off when he's not looking.

Have you ever seen Abaddon seemingly pointlessly wandering around the White City, looking around and snapping at anyone who dared to interrupt him? Yeah, he was on a child-hunt..

The twins know their city like the backs of their hands so you can imagine how difficult it is to find them.

Don't get me wrong, the squabs can behave if they want to. The problem is that most of the time they don't 😂

I mean, Abaddon did give them a couple of lessons on self defense but he wouldn't hand either of them any sharp objects. Not yet at least. The risk is not worth it.

(Optional for an OC insert) Even Raziel isn't safe from their shenanigans. They ain't scared of one archangel, no matter how unsettling even to adults he is.

In fact they see him as a friend and visit him frequently.

The only reason they tend to mess with the Keeper is his ability to scry. They see it as a challenge.

They would probably consider Azrael their friend too but since he's one of their tutors... you know. Authority = prank victim 😂

This is why they like annoying their father so much. You could say that its some funny sort of respect. You have to be worthy to suffer from their best pranks 😆

Turns out even Azrael's patience has its limits :P

Whenever both Abaddon and Uriel have to attend to their duties, the twins are left under the care of one of general's friends.

They love Nathaniel to bits and always enjoy his company. He's one of the few angels who aren't twins' target. Mostly because he's at it with them when no one's watching XDDD

Oh, btw. The Horsemen don't want to have anything to do with those little devils. Abaddon is bad enough but his kids are somehow even worse.

War finds them too chaotic and unruly. Ha can't reach an understanding with them.

Fury wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole. She dreads to think what they will become once they're adults...

Death thinks they're too... "strife'y" for his taste. Nah, that's Abaddon's problem, not his.

All of them stay away. Except for Strife. He likes the little squabs. He just needs to find a way to get past Abaddon in a "mother-hen" mode.
