ROOSTER VS THE GPCU (Glenn Powell Cinematic Universe)

Y'all know about doppelgangers? YEA ANYWAY- post break up Hangster ; everything ended in tears frustration and misunderstandings (as all Hangster break ups). SO heartbroken and in denial Rooster goes to a club far far away from base to get his hoe era post break up drunk on , get absolutely fuckin BLACK OUT DRUNK , wakes up the in the morning next to badabing badaboom JAKE??? even tho he's pretty sure they Definitely broke up (horribly might I add) . Man(Jake???) wakes up and asks him why he keeps calling him Jake when he explicitly said his name was Tyler (yes the tornado wrangler).

And so from there on starts the journey of Rooster bedding every single Glenn Powell character. From Tyler Owens to Gary Johnson to Ben (Anyone but you) to Gary Johnson Again but as Ron™ etc etc. (side not the question of whether Rooster fucks or get fucked belies on which character he's with)

So post mission , Hangster is finally reconciliating and almost there on getting back together. A night out at the hard brings it ALLLL together, the daggers are just chilling about and Hangster is hanging by the pool table being insufferably in love and flirting. HERE COMES IN TYLER MF-IN OWENS. The first person to notice is Maverick who just yells out in confusion "JAKE?!?" . Tyler being the gentlemen and flirt he is comes up to the Very Hot Man (DILF fr) and says "The name's Tyler Owens, sweetheart. Though being called Jake does bring memories of a certain someone" cue Rooster practically DIES in his seat curling around Jake who is equally in shock cuz there is a DOPPELGANGER OF HIMSELF RIGHT HERE IN THE HARD DECK! and then comes in the rest of the GPCU characters. Once the chaos subsides everyone on the squad proceeds to absolutely ROAST Rooster. poor man can't catch a break, his long time lover is here with him and everything is now all find and dandy with everyone surviving the mission yet here comes his past mistakes (tho they were Really good mistakes if you get it) getting absolutely bullied by everyone. It's not HIS fault he's still pining and yearning for Jake even broken up that he went and bedded his doppelgangers.

That man is just so irrevocably in love with Jake Seresin that no matter what he cannot escape no matter how many years it passed by and how many men he's fucked or been fucked by. The absolute yearning for that cocky arrogant handsome and mind blowingly gentle man he fell in love with causing him to just go out and bed people that seriously could all be twins and/or related to each other (they're not none of them are, they're all just doppelgangers)

And yes Maverick and Tyler do get together. I just think it's funny to make Bradley'a practically-second-father get with his post-break up-fling-that-seriously-looks-like-his-ex. Plus I think Pete will enjoy the chaos and adrenaline that comes with being an absolutely batshit insane tornado chaser

it’s not that Steve isn’t friends with Nancy and Jonathan, he is, it’s just turning up stag to their wedding after he was brutally dumped by Nancy for Jon and then pined for her from afar for a year would be embarrassing and Steve had had enough embarrassment to last him a lifetime because he still cringes when he sees people from high school and he’s forced to remember how much of a dick he was

so going to the Wheeler-Byers wedding alone? it’s out of the question. he needs a date. asap.

he’s moaning and groaning to Robin one day, his platonic life partner and soulmate, and she’s sympathetic because Vickie invited her to her and Dan’s wedding and much like Steve, going to the wedding of someone who you got dumped for is a grim, grim idea so she suggests they go with each other

“look everybody thinks we’re dating and we haven’t been back to Hawkins in forever so we just have to keep up the rouse for two days in May and a week in June, we can do that”

“I can do that, can you? You’re a terrible liar Rob”

but they eventually decide to do it, it saves them looking pathetic, it’s not outright lying most of the time it’s just stretching the truth because they do live together, they do intend on spending the rest of their lives with each, they do love the other person with their whole heart, easy peasy!

and Vickie’s wedding goes off without a hitch, other than Robin hissing in Steve’s ear that he’s been staring at the guitarist from the band for too long and Steve whispers back that he can’t help it, he’s never seen a prettier man and Robin gags but the band finishes up and seems to disappear so their night carries on perfectly fine

it’s Nancy and Jonathan’s wedding that starts creating cracks because the lead guitarist from that band? that’s Nancy’s half brother Eddie, Steve vaguely recalls it all coming to light a few years ago but it was right as he was hightailing it out of Hawkins with Robin because the kids were 16 and would be fine without him so close by so he didn’t know the details but yep, there he is, and Steve knows they’re in trouble when Eddie turns to introduce his band and his best friend Chrissy and Robin starts to stutter beside him, they excuse themselves to go panic in the bathroom and figure out what they’re going to do because they’re stuck here for a WEEK

not to mention the other people here, the kids are well aware that Robin is a lesbian and Dustin nearly ruins it for them immediately by opening his big mouth and laughing when Robin calls Steve her boyfriend, Max drives her elbow into his ribs though and he stops pretty quickly and the others are too afraid of Max to say anything else in public

they would’ve been fine, they would’ve, but Eddie is a huge flirt and Steve can never resist a flirt, he loves it and he’s enjoying the weird chase he and Eddie are caught in, Steve will allow Eddie to almost hook him in then he’ll remember he’s supposed to be a taken man and run away, Robin isn’t fairing much better because Chrissy is so, so pretty and funny and loveable and she seems like she wants to talk to Robin and keeps up with her rambling, encouraging her to take tangents by asking relevant questions and Robin feels comfortable with her, which is rare and she doesn’t want to ruin that by having a crush or making a wrong move but Chrissy seems interested and now Robin doesn’t know what to do

Nancy watches on from the head table for the wedding party and sips her champagne, it’s her wedding and this is free entertainment, she’ll straighten (ha) it all out for them in a week but for now? she lets Jonathan refill her glass and they settle in to watch

So I was wondering how you think Goldie would have reacted if Scrooge had asked her raise the twins with him? Like say they were in a really good place and she was getting along with the twins relatively okay when they’re on adventures and he was like this. But full time? Or if they weren’t and he came to her devastated over the loss of his sister and said he needed help? What would she say? And how would he ask? I have my own thoughts but I’m really curious as to what others think would happen if Scrooge swallowed his pride and asked the woman he loved. Do you think he would do that? Would he even think about it? Would she want him to ask her?

I think simply being in a good place would be exactly why she would leave.

Not strictly dt17, but if you mash their canon together, in the comics, she came back for him for their happy ending or whatever, and he thought she was playing him, and she kissed him. After stuff, he sent her away, for fear of getting attached and distracted, regardless of whether its already too late.

Cool, so she knows the answer is no at the turn of the century. She's not gonna let herself get burned twice.

Either way, by the time we see him, we already see that he knows (or believes) that the answer is no, so I think those sorts of conversation(s) happened much earlier in their story. Certainly by the 90's, I think he'd laugh himself sick at even the idea, which is what makes her bringing it up in the Foreverglades impactful.

Idk 150 year slowburns have to be slow, and there has to be a reason he doesn't. She's not his girlfriend for a century and a half, complicated is complicated. Being in a good place isn't even on their radar, which is what makes it being her idea so bonkers.

I'm interested in their timeline, though. She says they havent seen each other in a long time, we don't know why, but also Beakley says How could you let that thief back into our house, implying she's been there since Bentina's been living there, while Scrooge was retired. Idk.

He sends an inquiry to the head archivist and she starts to check the catalogues. In the catalogues they have logged every book, scroll and scrap of parchement that has been scanned and sorted.

The head archivist doesn't find anything in the catalogues.

Thing is, a large part of the archives hasn't been catalogued.

"Why not?" you ask? Well, because the funds weren't there. After all, why put money into dusty old books no one even knows how to read anymore (because the older the texts get, the more they are written in Sol)?

There actually are a series of letters and at least one contemporary account detailing roughly what happened buried in the archives. The question is just, can they find them?

I really love how you do the characterization throughout HMTB regarding each of the characters. Scar and Grian both clearly still have trauma from their time in 3rd Life, and it shows really really well! The triggers for Scar are really cleverly done as well, and I love how you portray Grian's efforts to pull him through his trauma.

Also, poor Grian, trying to balance his own pain and trauma while helping Scar bear his. He may be recovering fast, but refusing to talk about it is only going to get him so far.

One other big thing that I adored: Mumbo's insecurities. It's easy enough to wave off Mumbo's concern as irrelevant or unnecessary if you've never been in that position before, but I felt so bad for the poor guy! Every display of affection he tried to offer was one he interpreted as shot down. He doesn't know what to do with Grian, but he also doesn't want to lose him. I feel for those three, I really do.

I just discovered Help Me to Breathe recently, and I am absolutely adoring how you wrote this so far! The characters feel really real, and I'm so glad I found this fic.

they are definitely struggling; both grian and scar have their own trauma, but you're right that grian has, on top of that, the role of grounding scar and reeling him in and making sure he doesn't do anything too bad. and the lingering sickness. mmh.

but for scar, losing that grip on reality is terrifying and confusing. he feels destabilised and lost, and he clings to the only bit of security he had when he used to be smilarly scared: the desert castle. their little safe haven, their home, the place where laughter bloomed through graves and blood and explosions.

they both have the short end of the stick, and are just trying to somehow remain above water.

mumbo!!! i am so happy you mention mumbo and his struggles. he certainly has it rough in his own very unique way. and i think his pain deserves recognition, because he doesn't have it easy, either!

it's interesting and fun to explore each of their struggles, so very different and yet so tightly intertwined, as they trip each other up and dig holes underneath their own feet and desperately grab at anything or anyone in reach, dragging them down with nothing else but fear and good intentions.

i really appreciate hearing that you love the characterisation and the parts of the story i wrote so far! it means a lot to know that the characters feel real; it genuinely helps to hear! thank youuu!
