i have a few scenarios for you to consider
~~~
character: “i’m not straight”
fandom*: mmmm but what if you were
~~~
character: is bisexual in the comics
fandom: well, character isn’t explicitly stated to be bi in the movies, therefore character is straight
~~~
writer: yeah character is pan and has a dating history with all genders (and this wasn’t shown bcuz of xyz)
fandom: well, it doesn’t matter what the writer says, character is straight bcuz they’ve only dated the opposite gender on screen
~~~
character: is gay (either implied or explicitly stated to be homosexual and homoromantic)
fandom: well, maybe they’re homosexual but heteroromantic**, therefore i’m only going to ship this character with the opposite gender
~~~
character: is a lesbian
fandom: well, lesbians can still have sex with men therefore i’m going to write f/m smut with this lesbian and a man. not as a “figuring out/exploring my sexuality” fic but just bcuz i can
~~~
queer community: hey this character is canonically queer, could you please be respectful of that?
fandom: how about you go fuck yourselves. this is so embarrassing to be asking for respectful representation, literally shut the fuck up
~~~
character: is canonically gay
fandom: well you can’t prove he’s not attracted to women so he’s straight actually
~~~
disclaimers:
* i’m talking about a fandom as a whole in this post, not a couple individuals who may do this. this is talking about if a large chunk (think half or more) of a fandom is ignoring a canon queer identity
** no hate to someone who may identify this way. if someone is this identity, kudos to them, but people shouldn’t just use this as an excuse to ignore someone’s queer identity
this is how you sound when ignoring aspec*** identities. do you hear how ridiculous this is?
*** aspec (the way i use it at least) includes the asexual spectrum (ace-spec) and aromantic spectrum (aro-spec). also your friendly reminder that people can be aro and not ace and vise versa but you can’t ignore one or the other to suit your fancy
there will probably always be people doing this (re: ignoring canon queer identities) in fandoms, however, not in mainstream and popular ships and not to the extent that aspec identities are erased. bcuz if you have a problem with the above scenarios but not when the character is aspec, an already basically invisible identity, you need to re-examine your thinking and deal with your hypocrisy
do you know how hard it is to prove a LACK of something? even if someone straight up says, “i experience zero sexual or romantic attraction to anyone,” someone else will be like, “well how do you know you just haven’t found the right person yet?”
is the idea that someone doesn’t want a romantic or sexual relationship that difficult to understand?
if you want to see your identity represented in a character headcanon, great! but do so in a way that doesn’t negate another marginalized and underrepresented canon identity
there are SO! MANY! straight characters at your disposal. use one of them for your queer headcanons until we reach the point where your identity is canon. then you’ll probably be fighting for representation the same way i am right now
it also sucks to see fighting within the aspec community. bcuz yes aro and ace identities are a spectrum. however, when there’s a singular character with an aspec identity, you physically cannot showcase that spectrum. so if an ace character is sex-favorable, allos will believe all ace people are sex-favorable and ignore aces who are not. same thing for sex-repulsed aces and so on. the only solution is to fight for more aspec representation so everyone can see themselves in media without sacrificing parts of an aspec identity to fit how you identify
i’m tired. i’m so fucking tired of fighting for an ounce of representation. this should not be an uphill battle for people to accept aspec characters. i shouldn’t have to fight the queer community and straight people for this

Im properly gonna get hate for this but I need to get this out there. As a Gojo lover and self-shipper I’d like to take a minute to explain how Satoru is so mischaracterized by his fan girls and how you SatoSugu shippers and the jjk fandom as a whole really get on my nerves. Disclaimer even tho im not a SatoSugu shipper I’m not hating on the ship just the fandom. And I don’t want to hear “she only hates SatoSugu bc she ships herself with Gojo. 😡” When in reality I hate all jjk ships bc wtf is Gojo X Megumi & Gojo X Itadori??? First off Gojo RAISED Megumi and his sister like a FATHER. He was their GUARDIAN since they were little kids. Secondly they’re minors Megumi and Itadori are literally 15 and some of y’all are shipping them with a 29 year old man??? That’s crazy and disgusting. Some of y’all are even shipping him with Sukuna the person who killed him and had y’all crying. I don’t even know how that ship makes sense tbh. Satoru is a tragically written character. He was a person with good morals, dreams and ambitions. Ever since he popped out of the womb he was forced to be the strongest bc of his gifts. He didn’t even get to have a childhood bc of that burden. Satoru has witnessed lots of deaths and has more blood on his hands then necessary AND he lost his best friend the person who really understood him the most. Satoru felt alone bc no one tried to get to know him as a person and not just as the strongest. No one even had the human decency to even once ask him if he was okay or even how his day was going. I’m honestly surprised he didn’t do what Geto did and turn villainous bc no one saw him as a person, not his colleagues/peers AND DEFINITELY not his fangirls. He died for sticking to his beliefs and morals. He died trying to protect people and properly felt weak bc not only was he forgotten by his students but his sacrifice wasn’t even acknowledged. He didn’t even really get a burial. But when season 2 came out some y’all really made Satoru’s entire personality about Suguru, His BEST FRIEND. Like I get it, Satoru and Suguru had great chemistry and went well together. They were fire & ice, yin & yang but I honestly don’t see them as nothing more than brothers not to mention the ship is not only overhyped but also over sexualized and it’s fandom is toxic. Like some of you guys are literally on twitter arguing and sending death threats to people who simply don’t like the ship. And are telling other Gojo lovers to off themselves bc they ship him with themselves or their OC’s and it’s not even that deep fr. And don’t even get me started on what some of y’all are doing to the Gojo figurines…. Absolutely disgusting💀. Then you guys literally read the manga and watch the anime not for the plot but just to prove to everyone that Satoru is gay and that it should be canon or just bc Satoru is pretty and y’all see him as ‘daddy 🤢.’ Satoru is also over sexualized for no reason everywhere I go there’s fan art of him sucking off or being balls deep in Suguru or someone either (A. Doing some twisted period blood ritual to his figurine or (B. Someone on tumblr is posting on the ENTIRE INTERNET how badly they want Satoru down their throat with his nut sack against their chin. some of y’all need to touch grass fr bc honestly wtf. It’s the same thing with SatoSugu it’s so sexualized for no reason. If it’s not freaky fanart of them it’s again, more tumblr post of the freaky positions Suguru would have Satoru in bc Satoru is a bottom apparently. I’m not hating on bl or gay ships but like why are they so sexualized? Especially by straight people, straight women to be exact. And not every thing needs to have ships or be gay. Satoru is so stripped out of his character not only bc he’s pretty but bc y’all took his bond with Suguru and made it into something else entirely. Like why can’t two women or two men be best friends without getting shipped together? This happens in real life friendships too. Not only does this ruin the friendship but it takes away from the characters personality. Being in this fandom is tiring and just not fun.

What’s your most hated fandom characterization for each of the main 7?
hoo boy am i glad you asked. although i’m gonna be real, my issue is less with fandom characterization, because you do you i don’t give a shit, and more with how people go batty if you personally are not a fan of fanon characterizations.
like, lemme be obvious and talk about my biggest example. i am a brown eyed lance truther. we know this. the amount of weirdo comments, weirdo DMs, and weirdo asks i get is atrocious. i post a lot of them bc they’re so stupid they’re funny but the amount of people per week that tell me to kill myself is lowkey wild. the amount of people that love to say some variation of “i liked your fic but you ruined it by making lances eyes brown! his eyes are blue!” and i’ve checked other brown eyed truther’s fics — either they delete their comments better than me, or they do not get the same thing. idk what the deal is lol.
i will concede to the point that i’m a contrarian and annoying about it, but a list of the following non-fanon headcanons/characterizations i hold that have been commented on in some derisive way:
- bitchy hunk (lol)
- non “cinnamon roll too pure and baby and good for this world” hunk*
- allura is a good character (🤡)**
- allura is a sweetheart
- allura is not a drill sergeant
- kuron was a good iteration of shiro
- red paladin lance/black paladin keith/blue paladin allura
- retired shiro
- pidge is not cruel
- pidge is not an infant and can handle things a regular 14-15 year old can handle
- small details are irrelevant (think lances family, exact prekerb details, etc)
- keith gyeong and lance sanchez
- fucking brown eyed lance. i’m saying it again
- tall keith
- non omega keith***
- readmores
- autistic lance
- adhd keith
- non asshole/cruel keith
- comphetting gay lance****
- shallura
- bi shiro, demi keith, essentially any sexuality headcanon that isn’t mainstream
- hunk who isn’t food obsessed
- that’s about it
*stop infantilising hunk
**the allura hate is ridiculous and largely rooted in anti-Blackness. it should not be a fight to say that she had a reason to feel betrayed by keith’s heritage, that she did not “get in the way” of klance, that her death was stupid and ridiculous, that she is often pushed over in favour of klance (not as in she’s less popular, but that her/her death are used as a plot device to further klance), and that she is as interesting, nuanced, and multifaceted as the rest of them.
***people, inevitably, feminize characters in fandoms (largely because many people in fandom are young women, i know i feminize characters simply bc i’m making them like me and i’m feminine lol), and my issue is that people (in the general sense, not everybody) love to feminize keith and then get really mad if anyone else is feminized. this is not about fem or trans woman keith btw. this is about people omega-ifying him and then losing their MINDS if i don’t share that headcanon.
****i literally only wrote this once and then never again because people lost their minds. but as much as i love bi lance, i think it’s interesting that usually, when we see “boy crazy” or “girl crazy” characters, especially if they have a lot of chemistry or homoerotic tension with a same-gender character, people are like oh ya that’s comphetting. that character is desperately trying to outrun the gay thoughts. but with lance, who was definitely girl crazy and cared more about having a girlfriend than actually dating and falling in love (think “mrs blue lion” — he didn’t give a fuck about who he was marrying, so long that it was a girl), calling him gay will have people saying you’re erasing bisexuality. as if he was not fucking straight in the show. so.
sorry this is so bitter and ranty lol. been in a mood

one thing i hate abt the new mk fans is that they find ANY reason to ship mlm. i have nothing wrong with ppl being gay and shit, but when you ship Raiden and Smoke because of ONE line.
one.fucking.line.
it pisses me off SO much because all they do is focus on ships. Like two characters of the same gender cant be friends! If they are, they’re dating! (ex. Johnny and Kenshi, or even Cassie and Jacqui???) but two characters of different genders being friends? or even CANONICALLY DATING? that just cant happen, can it?
I believe in Johnny and kenshi being best friends. FRIENDS. thats all they are. They dont even talk to each other romantically??? they both get married-and have kids!- with a WOMAN.
and dont think this just goes for the men of mk. it goes for the women too.
I ship Tanya and Milenna. They belong together. But Jade and Kitana?? Seriously??? They’re best friends, like sisters, and theres literally parts of the games dedicated to them and their MALE lovers.
you guys will find any reason to make a lgbtq ship good lord

You're so real for this...2024 and I still see people said, "Aw how cute it is between Light and Misa or (any female characters)...."
See, even for someone who don't really like shipping, since the first I watch Death Note anime, then read the manga, I can't get it if people don't ship Light with L...
When I found your blog : Lawlight & Kataang shipper, yes? Kindred spirit...See, when I tell people I ship Kataang, most people will be 😁😆🥰🤩 but then I said I'm Lawlight shipper, people be like 😑😭🙁☹
Like, why people can't love 2 very different ships, right?
So, in ATLA, are you Zuko/Mai or Zuko/Sokka shipper or neither? Why?
Right?? I don’t get it fr. Shipping Light with Misa specifically is like.. LMFAO I CANTTTT he literally hates her so much but it isn’t even that he hates her, he actively avoids all sorts of intimacy with her and when he Does do something, he only does so to continue using her as a pawn. I mean, the only reason he even kept her alive was bc he didn’t have a choice in the first place bc of Rem. And like, his avoidance and internal rejection of her and other women isn’t even a “Kira” thing, bc he still did so when he was memoryless and we also know he avoided dating girls pre death note/Kira persona bc he said he was “waiting until college” etc. So there’s a clear canonical pattern of Light avoiding romantic relationships with women. Which on its own would be like ok whatever, but at the same time there is a clear pattern of an active interest in male characters even when they are equal to the female characters such as Takada vs Mikami. There’s also the fact he shows no discomfort whenever L touches him specifically during Yotsuba arc, and also the fact that in the manga he asked one of his friends to send him a holiday card to which his friend replied “I only send them to girls” which is essentially stating this is a romantic gesture and Light did just ask for it.
I mean, I could go on and on but there is quite a lot of gay coding going on in the manga and then of course in the anime and subsequent DN adaptations (minus the Netflix movie that we shall pretend doesn’t exist)
I don’t rlly get the hatred toward Lawlight tbh? It’s pretty weird, because their relationship is like… 90% of the appeal of Death Note imo. But to each their own I suppose. Personally, I just think there is a lot of canonical justification and intentional gay coding/subtext to warrant it.
If Ohba didn’t want us to ship lawlight then perhaps they shouldn’t have written them to be some sort of fucked up soulmate pair who complete each other and perhaps they shouldn’t have make jokes hinting at L and Light having a homosexual undertone to their relationship and PERHAPS they shouldn’t have had an entire story arc where L literally handcuffs himself to Light for 100 days straight and where they share an UNMONITORED room…. LMFAOOO that right there was 100000% ship tease idc what anyone says. Ohba knew what they were doing idgaf
And yeah I know about the kataang stuff. It’s weird for me too. See Lawlight is my OTP hands down. Kataang is a strong second contender. I love both pairings about the same but in very different ways. It’s funny because they’re very drastically different pairings of course, but that also is the stories themselves and the narratives.
Kataang is about the most wholesome ship you could ship meanwhile Lawlight is inherently fucked up butttttttttt Death Note itself is a fairly mature story dealing with inherently fucked up subject matter and characters so there’s rlly no avoiding that.
I don’t rlly care what someone thinks of my ship preferences, the only thing that annoys me is antis who misrepresent canon like with Kataang or antis with Lawlight who basically say we’re bad ppl for shipping it. Like as if Lawlight isn’t a huge ship in anime/manga lol. Truly one of the forefathers of toxic yaoi 🤣
As for who I ship Zuko with: I do ship Maiko though I’ll say I’m not hugely invested in the pairing. I don’t have much to say on it other than I enjoy their scenes in the show and I think they are a nice couple. I don’t care for Zuko and Sokka, I think it’s kind of in that same category as zvtara and I don’t care for that ship at all.
I actually ship Zuko with Aang lol. Like Zuko and Aang when they’re older, I can get behind zukaang 100% in part because they are like that kindred spirit thing similar to lawlight to me. I really enjoy that aspect of their relationship and I again think canonically, zukaang would be plausible if it weren’t for maiko and kataang.
Anyway, thanks for the message! Hope this answered your question :)

I'm on a roll with the s/j/m hatred tn so I'm going to compile a masterlist of all her shitty lgbt/poc representation and why it sucks booty cheeks. it should be noted that none of this is meant as shade on any of the characters themselves... I actually happen to like quite a lot of them
EDIT: there are some nice additions to this post in the notes you can check out
LGBT rep
Aedion (Bi/Pan)
Literally known as “Adarlan’s Whore” (a nickname that references both his allegiance to the king and his tendency to sleep around)
His only same-sex relationship is with a vaguely-mentioned unnamed lover from the past (it’s not even said straight-up that they’re a man, but I’m assuming they are bc they’re mentioned to be a commander of the Bane)
He’s shown being attracted to women and only women for two and a half books. He’s a womanizer retconned into the slutty bisexual stereotype
His liking men & women is compared to prostitution
Its insinuated in koa that he slept with an ex while he and Lysandra were fighting (because the cheating bisexual trope is such a new & creative one!)
Helion (Bi/Pan)
He’s always trying to have 4somes with three of the main characters
Realistically he’s probably one of the most powerful/interesting High Lords but this gets sidelined in favor of him flirting with eVeRyOnE
All we really know about him is his name and the fact that he’s a bit of a manwhore… very 2-dimensional
He has an affair & a child with a married woman… just the Slutty/Cheating Bisexual Trope (Volume 2) :/
Mor (Lesbian? Possibly bi?)
She’s never shown in any real relationships (with men or women)
She had tragic off-screen relationship with a mortal queen a few hundred years ago
We get literally no hints that she’s gay throughout the series, she just randomly mentions she likes women at the end of book 3
She gets no happy relationship, she stays closeted to spare Az’s feelings (as though he’s not a grown ass man), she’s retconned into her sexuality most of the way through the series… just shitty shitty rep all around
Hasar (Lesbian)
She’s a villain, and a shitty one at that
Lesbian rep from a side character in one novella that half the fandom didn’t read? What’s even the point?
Thesan (Gay)
A very minor character & his unnamed “lover” who serve no narrative purpose whatsoever… thanks for nothing sarah
Emrys & Malachai (Presumably gay)
Oh look! More minor, background mlm that might as well not exist for all they do for the story :/
They are cute though, I’ll give them that
POC rep
Nehemia
First (and only) black main in ToG
She dies to fuel the white protag’s character arc… a very tired trope
She was actually a pretty well-written, likable character up until her brutal murder, which made it that much worse to hear about her organs strewn all over the room
Sorscha
Described as “plain” (particularly in contrast to the white women like Aelin & Lysandra)
We know she’s POC because of where she’s from, but the way her features are described suggest she could still be white
Dark hair, gold eyes, “tan” skin
She really just fawns over white-boy Dorian every 2 seconds before dying a violent death to fuel Dorian’s arc…
…Aaaand I’m sensing a pattern here
Nesryn
Much of her character (especially in QoS) is reduced to her beefing with Aelin (and thus being villanized by the narrative) because of jealousy over Chaol
Simply described as having “tan” skin (again). I think sarah is allergic to calling people brown
She is also described as plain compared to white protagonist
She has a (presumably middle eastern) family that only wants her to stay home and be a baker/someone’s wife
Yrene
Once again very racially ambiguous to the point where she could even be white, with “tan/golden” skin, golden hair, and golden eyes
She almost immediately ties her literal life force to a white man she hated like a month ago. Seriously, can WOC not fawn over a hunky white man for once?
She defeats erawan in the end — considering she’s been a character for such a short time, this just feels more like a deus ex machina the anything really set up by the plot
Helion
Not going to fully rehash what I said above but generally… he has great potential, but is basically not a character
Tarquin
He’s portrayed as very nice and reasonable, if young and naive, yet he literally only exists to get manipulated/robbed by the main characters
He seems like such a sweetheart. He deserved much better than Riceman and Feyrug doing him dirty like that
I’ve heard rumors of a High King/Queen F*ysand plotline in later books…if that happens, Tarquin will likely be bending the knee and forgiving the people who fucked him over just a short time ago
Lucien
He’s described as very caring and loyal (yay!) which seems to always get him taken advantage of (damn!)
He’s portrayed (especially in ACOWAR) as someone we’re supposed to dislike when all his actions are perfectly reasonable
He’s literally retconned out of being white when it’s revealed Helion is his father instead of Beron. I’ve seen ppl get mad at “white-washed” fan art but it’s hard to expect much else when his original character description was straight red hair, amber eyes,  and “tan” skin (holy shit agAIN)
The people of the White Fangs from TOG
They’re described as having black hair, black eyes, and “tan” skin
They live isolated in the mountains (away from civilization) and are described as “savage” and warlike, always raiding villages in the mountains and stealing women away from their homes…
Cain, who’s from these people, dabbles in dark magic/religion nobody else understands
This is feeling, intentional or not, like a horrible Native American caricature. Idk maybe that’s just me

first part of a weird experimental thing in the form of in-character posting on Hiccup Forum within the DCU. onesided dollshot but not in the direction you’d expect! crude language! fervent denials of bisexuality and attraction to weird bendy people!
I’ll be up front with this right away: I think this fetish shit is weird and I don’t like being involved in it. I only come here to find videos of ladies with big naturals so I can jerk off and then push that bullshit back into the vault, and I think all of you are fucking weird for having your little verbal circlejerk over here. I’m not typing this so you can onehanded fuck yourself, I’m venting because I have a problem as a straight man, because if I don’t rant here I swear to god I’m going to murder a theythem and it’s going to be considered a hate crime.
I work in the private security industry, so I spend a lot of time on call with the same group of people. It’s an intense setup, we spend months living together and sharing a kitchen and when we have a gig we all have to take company transportation together. It reminds me of those Alaskan oil rig camps with all the storage containers except it’s one big musty-ass building. So around two months ago I’m in the kitchen at six in the morning and we’re all getting our shit together, and I hear someone hiccup. It’s kind of high-pitched so I’m hoping for the best case scenario, that being my lady friend with benefits who works with me (I know, don’t shit where you eat, but also if you think about it if you ever make yourself food in your own house you technically are shitting where you eat. food for thought.). I don’t think the fucking Crime Doctor could get this information out of me, but we’re at a point in our situation where I could easily go upstairs with her for a quickie and satisfy a lifelong fantasy. My other female options are literally married. Together. That only excludes one of them, though, if we’re being honest. I would have at least enjoyed the show if that were the case. But no, not only is it a guy, it’s THIS FUCKING GUY (I think he may have pronouns, but for the record he’s never said anything about them).
Right up front, I’m 100% straight. I fuck women, I’m into women, I have kids with an ex-wife, the proof is out there. That said, I’m not 100% opposed to male hiccups. You know, if the guy is normal-looking it isn’t the worst thing ever, it’s like appreciating another man’s hog while he’s fucking a beautiful woman. You’re not there for the hog itself, but as a man you can just appreciate the vibes. I’m pretty sure this is why straight women make out when they’re drunk, I’m not big on science. There’s even a guy at my work who would be my first choice. But you need to understand that the person I’m talking about was hands down the worst option possible. He’s what crazy bible thumpers think of when they imagine gay people and transes. The gross kind of skinny, covered in scars, pretty sure he pulls out his own hair and then uses yarn wigs to cover it up. He can’t go two sentences in a conversation without dumping some kind of personal information about his fetishes or his trauma or his medical problems. My FWB also sleeps with him for some reason and I have to not think about it.
So, I can tell it was him because he’s thumping on his chest and looking all concerned, and I’m cursing God because all I ever want is to just witness this shit with a hot girl at a bar or something, and now I’ve been given this and it’s just, what do you do in that situation? You can’t leave because it would be fucking weird plus thats a pussy move. I was just hoping he was done. Fuck me though, because it kept happening every four seconds and it was LOUD. I guess this was already a thing with him because our boss asked him if he was okay and if he was getting the hiccups a lot again and then basically bugged him to go to one of his doctors. He told her that he woke up with them and kind of shut down the conversation after that, thank god. He was still hiccuping while everyone was eating though and had them until he had to go get dressed, then I guess he got rid of them in his dorm before we headed out.
What’s really fucked up about it is that now that thing is happening where when you hear about something like, idk, the word “jabroni” and now your brain is wired to pick it up everything. I feel like now I’m cursed to notice him hiccuping all the goddamn time when I would rather have this skill for someone I actually want to fuck or jerk off to. The rabbit hole goes deep. I don’t even want to talk about it any more because it’s probably the biggest sexual disappointment of my life other than discovering the sheer amount of lesbians in the female population.
>>“I work in the private security industry”>>BATMAN IS THAT YOU??
>>>>don’t be stupid lmao dude is a supervillain and thinks someone is gonna gank him over a fetish forum post
>>Okay, so you drop these breadcrumbs on us about your twink coworker and then never elaborate further? Come on, after you’ve spanked it to videos that the ladies were polite enough to post of themselves?? Way to take advantage of the social contract. If you’re able to type this much about it already, spilling the details won’t traumatize you.
>>>>I agree, tell us about these horrible irritating unsexy hiccups so we can sympathize with you about how much it sucks and we totally don’t wish we were in your shoes!! Be explicit so you can REALLY unburden your mind! I AM A PSYCHOLOGY STUDENT!

for what it's worth, i don't think the 911 fandom is capable of critically engaging neither with the source material nor fandom... behaviours. your words are wasted on this audience, babe. 😔
OOF
NGL— I don’t actually expect to change hearts and minds if I don’t have an interpersonal relationship with someone. The internet isn’t really designed for revolutionary discussions because by design, it creates “echo chambers” and rather abrupt “culture shock” from the inelegant melding of worldviews. People are confronted with worldviews and analyses before they’ve been equipped with the background knowledge and vocabulary for the discussion at hand.
So someone with a conservative worldview, let’s say, will see a tweet by a history museum that seeks to teach about racial inequality. That tweet includes an infographic about how the nuclear family and perfectionism are features of cultural white supremacy. However, that conservative has not had the necessary pre-requisite conversations that establish the definitions of “social construct” or the features of “white supremacy” or the political origins of the “nuclear family.” But they know the tweet has something to do with race and racism because it mentions “white culture,” and so—through the knowledge they have—assume that this history museum is calling parenthood racist.
This is an actual thing that happened in US American Political discourse.
Given the primary criticism my post received was in regards to me “making up” reasons to hate a trope and trying to “moralize” dislike for a common feature of 911 fanfiction, I think it’s safe to assume that most 911 fans have not previously had discussion about the mammy trope. They’ve yet to essentially be taught to recognize the way racist writing tropes manifest in character building, the development of a character’s interpersonal relationships with other characters, and in plot and plot devices. (Although, I do find it hard to believe that they’ve never heard this criticism of the way they write Black Women, as there are Black Women in this fandom who have certainly said something before. Like… there is no way this has gone unsaid.)
Because they’re unfamiliar with this, they very likely think that their writing does no harm, despite the fact they’re shoving these characters into caricatures with a very long history in stereotypes and bigotry. They’re also unlikely to assume that these caricatures have affected the way they view people because they’re unaware of how they’re based in stereotypes or how these stereotypes do harm. Assigning the “caregiver” role to a Black Woman just feels right to them, no analysis on why they came to that gut assumption.
Then they see a post criticizing something they do and it feels to them like making a mountain out of a molehill.
(A recent example— although not race-related— being that one 911 blog who claimed that gay men are non-committal, sleep around a lot, and really lax about prophylactics and disease. When called out on that, her reasoning was that stereotypes must come from somewhere, and that “somewhere” must be reality. But while a hegemonic class may base stereotypes in some part of a political reality: the disparate treatment of a marginalized class by the hegemonic class, they are not materially true (aka— those realities that exist on the ground). EX: It is a political reality that queer communities were devastated by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, but the reason for that devastation was literal governmental neglect. The hegemonic class used this very real political truth to portray queer men as diseased, sexually deviant, and to further stigmatize queerness. It is true that queerness has been stigmatized by disease, but it is untrue that this is the fault of certain members of the queer community and their inherent behavior. A stereotype is ultimately a political narrative.)
But that doesn’t mean there aren’t people who are simply… underinformed. They see that same post and go, “Huh. I didn’t consider— that’s a good point.” They have a light-bulb moment and come to see what they were reading in a new light. An example being—well—you during 911’s “daddy discourse,” where you said that in hindsight, you recognize that your discomfort with “daddy,” but not “mommy” was due to your relationship with archetypes of masculinity as a woman in a patriarchal society.
And while I do write these posts for that light-bulb moment among a few, I ultimately write them for the people who are directly impacted. If you roll your eyes and say, “Why does everything have to be about controversy, just let me write whatever without criticism; I’m giving it to you for free,” you aren’t my intended audience. My intended audience is ALWAYS the individual who has been scrolling through the main tags, blocking people left and right for bad takes and terrible caricatures. My intended audience is the fan who wants to give up on a fan space because of how hostile it is to them. They deserve to see that there are people in that same fan space who recognize.

I didn't know about the antisemitism in hp because while I wasn't explicitly taught "this is antisemitic" I still learned those tropes. I just didn't know they they were tropes. The only thing I knew was nazi propaganda, because that was in textbooks. We didn't learn about everyday antisemitism. We didn't learn about the history of jews in any other country. And that doesn't excuse me or the school I went to. But I know better now, and I can look around and recognise certain tropes. But I can also recognise that jkr was hateful to so many different groups of people. Jews, the Irish, asian people, gay people, trans people, ironically women in general (Ginny Weasley in particular who only existed as a character for Harry to save and get married and have babies with) and women who like "girly" things (Lavender Brown deserved better.)
at this point, so much of pop culture is steeped in these antisemitic things (tropes, imagery, caricatures, etc.) and a lot of fantasy lore in some areas is just antisemitic to its core so while I’m angry I have to sift through the distressing nonsense, I try not to get angry at people who genuinely don’t understand. because you can spread antisemitism while not being an antisemite. the entirety of the witch aesthetic is stolen and twisted from jewish caricatures, antisemitic history, and practices appropriated from indigenous cultures - but that’s just The Witch now. same with goblins. that’s just what That Thing is to people now, so if you want to stop it, you have to throw the whole thing away and barely anyone is actually willing to do that. on top of that, they believe they don’t have to.
with HP specifically, I don’t blame anyone for not picking up on the bigotry from the books they read as children. now, if you reread it as an adult and still don’t get it, that’s another issue. but at least with the antisemitism, it’s much more obvious with the movies and a lot of people try to excuse JKR from it bc of that, when she had such a heavy hand in making those films. she had/has enough sway to change literally anything. and I think a lot of people understood the antisemitism more when they could see just what these goblins were supposed to look like, and that brought it all together. however, there are people obsessed with goblins (I think there’s a lot of neurodivergent people who have a special interest in goblins for one reason or another and that makes it more difficult to let go, in my experience) who absolutely refuse to come to terms with the antisemitic nature of the creature to begin with, when it’s antisemitic originally AND in JKR’s interpretation. I never got into HP so I didn’t know about the goblins, having not seen the movies, and it was really easy to not interact with it once I did. I can genuinely understand how heartbreaking it is to find out something you love goes against what you believe in, bc for jews it’s just part of our lives. we find out creators of and the things we like are nazis or antisemitic every single day. moreso than usual as of late.
imo the racism and general bigotry of JKR should be more than enough for HP fans who claim to care about other people, but it’s hella odd that antisemitism is the sticking point for so many people. they’ll say they’re streaming the movies and playing the games and reading the books but but but they’re not giving money to JKR and therefore not supporting her transphobia and racism, but you mention her antisemitism and the fact that the HP game was just antisemitism the simulator and they immediately dismiss it. her bigotry is embedded in the work. it’s in the imagery of the franchise. hell, there’s a storyline where a villain is a villain bc he wanted to stop the holocaust. that speaks for itself, and should be enough for literal adults.
(on the It’s The Thing Now point, it’s happening with lizard people as well. everyone is calling themselves a goblin and making lizard people jokes and it’s just apart of the young people dialogue now. I could go on for hours but I think I made my point.)

Ok maybe I'll cook with this, maybe not but i feel like you'd find it interesting anyway. I was thinking about what I mentioned earlier, about the woman in NI being basically hunted for sport by the PSNI for taking her top off at a concert, and I started thinking further about it, and about what people have said when I brought it up in the past, and usually the response I get to wondering why it's so acceptable for men to be able to restrict the bodily autonomy of women on a legal basis and not do the same for themselves is "well, I don't think any woman would feel safe taking her top off in public" and it's like...oh my fucking God?? I wonder why???? I wonder what in God's name??? Could possibly cause a woman to feel unsafe walking in the streets showing a part of her body that men literally reveal to go for a jog in summer??? Could it be??? The male gaze??????
Also I swear I'm saying this from a legitimate place and not just because "omg boobs!!!" (I am aspec)
And it just pisses me off because like...do people think gay people felt safe being together in the 50s? No, but they had the right to be together should they choose. It was nessecary for their freedom.
If something makes somone feel unsafe for exercising a right that 50% of the population already have...maybe the answer is not continuing feed into it idkkkkk this used to keep me up at night
Also I was thinking about makeup and misogyny, and I sort of came to a conclusion that the beauty industry is misogynistic but makeup doesn't have to be idk I know it sounds kind of lukewarm feminist to go "I appeal to men.....put of my own CHOICE." but I am also a man who likes women and also enjoys wearing makeup so idk 😭 I see people paint on their faces and I'm like "wow, fuck that's cool" and then I see people in YouTube comment sections for concealer ads go "eyebags are NOT hot" and I'm like "wow, fuck that's not cool..."
Anyway would love ur thoughtssss sorry for the long ass message 💫
YES YES YES
Okay so, on the first topic, part of the reason I think men are so frightened by the normalisation of women simply having breasts is because there of 2 things, 1- Breasts give children free food, which capitalistic men hate 2- Women have an expectation to give their whole self to male sexual pleasure, all of their bodies must be to male expectation. So breasts, being an organ related to reproduction that cannot cause men sexual pleasure, they hate it. As for the reasoning behind the Criminalisation of female “nudity” (for need of a better word) being for women’s safety, is just a projection of male bad behaviour being projected onto women. Society loves blaming women for men’s problems. Criminalising these things instead of fixing men’s behaviour is rape culture, there’s no way around it. We call societies like Afghanistan facist and horrific patriarchal dictatorships (because they are) but we do the same thing on a lower level, and if it was more normalised, we’d likely end up the same as them.
As for the topic of makeup. The beauty industry is inherently patriarchal. There is no way around it. Creative makeup, like cosplay makeup etc can be done in a feminist way, but I’m still wary of it. Female people are taught from birth that their natural bodies are always in need of improvement. If they don’t look like a Barbie doll, they’re not doing enough. Think critically, if you’re putting on things to cover parts of your body, why? If you’re doing it for yourself, why do you find empowerment in changing yourself as you are? You’re right, there’s a difference between painting your face a different colour to dress up as a character, and painting on concealer because you think your eye bags aren’t hot enough. But when radfems say they hate makeup, we’re talking of the latter.

2, 12, and 21 for dennis :)
DENNIS MY BELOVED!!! thank you for giving me this opportunity to talk about my special little freak
2. favorite canon thing about him— there’s a LOT about him that i find really interesting and compelling, but i think probably my favorite canon thing about him is his bisexuality. it’s such a clear and present throughline of his character literally since episode ONE, and i HATE when people try to write off his interest in men as either vanity (i have never met a straight man in my life who’s so vain that they’d sleep with a man just for the ego boost) or as evidence that he’s actually gay (just because he’s got trauma and Issues with women doesn’t negate his attraction to them!!). a second answer would be his nebulous gender issues, but those also kind of tie into the bisexuality for me, at least in the case of this specific character.
12. a headcanon you have for this character— there’s a billion different ways to interpret Dennis’ Gender Troubles, but for me, i like to read him as agender!! i think that dennis just sort of does what he wants to do in regards to his gender presentation, and it’s only through the socially-imposed norms that the gang pushes on him that those traits then become masculine or feminine. which is pretty much how i view MY agender…ness… and how i navigate my gender presentation. it’s the classic “giving the character the highest honor you can bestow by giving them your same gender/sexuality” situation
21. if you’re a fic writer and have written for this character, what’s your favorite thing to do when writing for them? what’s something you don’t like? — so it’s actually been several years since i’ve last written for dennis; i HAVE another dennis fic planned, but haven’t started writing it yet!! that said, i remember really enjoying his ego and confidence and belief that he’s a master manipulator— it’s fun to write a character who THINKS they’re unflappable and pulling all the strings, especially when the reality of the situation doesn’t quite match up to that. i had a harder time writing about (or around, to be more accurate) his views on and treatment towards the women he sleeps with; it’s a really unpleasant aspect of his character, by design, and i remember really struggling with how to write it so that it wasn’t too dark or difficult to deal with but NOT totally erasing or brushing over it. i’ve learned a lot about writing since i last wrote for dennis, and i’ve also grown and recovered from a lot of my own past trauma, so i’m eager to come back and write him again now!!

“How is Belos a colonizer??” Bro needs a basic history 💀 How do you think Belos got to Connecticut in the first place? Also he genuinely colonized the Boiling Isles with how he took over don’t overlook that.
He can hate multiple things?? LMFAO the puritans hated tons of minorities witches included, even if we take the puritan shit out Belos is still bigoted I don’t understand why people are trying to defend him? 💀 He’s literally Belos
“He was not racist where the hell did that come from” bro do you hear what you’re saying - think about what time period he came from.
“There’s quite literally no homophobia or transphobia in toh” that’s only limited to the Boiling Isles 💀 and Belos definitely not from there
“I think it came from Luz being a POC” “it’s not a race thing” “idk where that idea that witches are a race came from but it’s definitely odd” literally just look at where Belos came from. All bigotry ties together mind you. For example you can’t advocating for women’s rights while being transphobic (TERFS) cause then you’re putting not only trans people down - but yourself and other minorities as well. It all connects. Also nobody is saying witches are a race 💀I don’t understand how Belos fans in all the time brainrot ting over Belos don’t realize what time period he came from and how’d it effect him?? (I am a Belos fan myself)
“It’s a fictional character guys!”
Yeah and people love thinking realistically abt him lmao. The fictional character arguments are always so lazy + ignore the real-world messages - yes he’s a fictional character. People like him because he’s so realistic. There are real, yes real people out there, who if they had the chance - would do the exact same things he did just to get rid of a minority. Thats not an exaggeration that’s simple how deep bigotry can run and I love how Belos’ can be portrayed in multiple ways.
Also saying that Belos only hates magic purely because Caleb got ‘corrupted’ by a witch is not correct at all. That bigotry was there longgg long ago 💀 if anything that only amplified it. Belos doesn’t have a justifiable reason to hate witches/magic (Caleb falling in love with a witch is not justified hatred.) he simply does it because he holds those bias & allegories for 400+ years. Note this can extend to how differing witches are to humans in Belos’ eyes. How LGBTQ+ is acceptable for witches while in humans it’s sinful, unnatural, etc. How witches don’t have racism (I swear to god if one more person tells me that there’s no people of color on the Boiling Isles, HAVE YOU SEEN GUS?? 💀) whereas Belos came from an era where racism (to put in its simplest terms) was very much thriving!
The Boiling Isles represents literally everything a bigot like Belos would be against, witches included. Witches can be gay, witches can be people of color, etc. “Belos hates witches only” doesn’t really work for him and what his character is written for. He’s an allegory of bigotry and with the way he acts & speaks you can definitely see it. Fiction affects reality and reality affects fiction.
“He wanted control over the magic and to limit it to what he wanted.” That’s true! I’m unsure where you were going with this? He actually didn’t want this, he only used the coven system as a way to kill everybody easily in one take. He simply needed to gain control over magic first - that was never apart of his original plan. He was out here to kill because the boiling isles represents everything he is against.
“But Caleb came from the same time period and he’s not bad!”
I love comparing Caleb & Belos together sm. Further cementing into the ground that Belos being a bigot is all his doing is because Caleb unlearned the bigotry. Caleb was also a colonizer, he was also a witch hunter! He also likely held those other harmful beliefs for most of his life! But Caleb changed, whereas Belos clung to those beliefs. That’s why I love these two they’re a great example of why bigotry is taught and can be unlearned! Acknowledging this can add to their stories more, give them more depth, add more realism to an already scary villain! The reason Belos is so scary as a villain is because of how real he is - there genuinely are people out there who’d do the same as him if given the chance.
As a POC who studies a lot about how bigotry develops - I love studying Belos, he’s very well written in this regard imo! I feel like people who don’t want to acknowledge the rest of Belos’ bigotry miss the point of his entire character arc 😭 he’s somebody who fell into the deep extremes of bias & hate - let him be hateful.
I hope this helped the original person to have a better understanding of this topic? They seemed ill informed/uneducated so I hope my rant helped 😭(not saying that as an insult btw)

Yeah her writing is super fun but Dorn’s distaste for gnc lesbians is wild. All her protagonists have this delusional idea that the ‘typical’ lesbian is a butch woman that is over represented everywhere and it makes no sense like it’s such a dated homophobic idea…. Like you can turn in on any show w gay women and see 2 long haired, feminine straight woman hesitantly kissing like they’re being held at gunpoint 😭 Unless it’s something like the L Wird (which is literally one of its kind and even then) there are zero butches. Not even in books or movies. The most masc woman might have shirt shit but will be wearing lipgloss and eyeshadow lol. Idk where she gets this is idea like it’s so dated and odd. Also odd are her characters obsession with gay men. Feels pointed and lowkey misogynistic like I don’t get lesbians who live gay male culture but hate lesbians and think we’re boring like girl look within lmao
I SO agree, anon! I think at first reading her work, I couldn't figure out if she was giving her character these traits on purpose to make some sort of statement, like wow look at this mess of a girl and how much she hates her own identity, but the more I read, the more I feel like she is projecting her own views onto her stories, and it is a very strange, very dated way to view queerness. Purely from an anthropological approach, you can learn a lot from her books if you think about it. Particularly about mainstream entertainment and how heavily it influences cultural shifts within queer spaces.
I feel like there's a deeper conversation to have about shows like The L Word (a show Dorn constantly mentions in her work) and the damage it caused despite the good it did. Because I do feel the show did some good. Speaking from personal experience, it helped me embrace my lesbian identity for the first time in my life. It really stripped the negative connotations I associated with that word and I know it did the same for a lot of girls my age when it was originally airing. BUT it also alienated a lot of groups, it perpetuated so many harmful stereotypes about sapphics, and excluded any brand of sapphic that didn't fit into its very limited spectrum of lesbianism. Dorn's books are such a good example of the culture shows like the l word, and Will & Grace, created.
All that being said, you have a responsibility to yourself and your community, as a queer person, to educate yourself and unlearn problematic and harmful behavior, and Dorn needs to, as you said, look within and do that, because it's becoming pretty evident she's stuck in 2002 lol, or at the very least, her characters are.

Can I just say that I can watch, like and even ship straight relationships if they’re queer-coded.
Besides Spuffy.
Think Abby and Eric from ‘Santa Clarita Diet’. They throw the gender stereotypes so far out the fucking window with that ship that you can’t even see them from space. They’re extremely accessible in that way.
The reason why I prefer queer, gay or WLW relationships in TV art/entertainment is not just because I’m a bisexual woman myself. It’s mainly because I HATE GENDER STEREOTYPES! I hate how the natural energies of the masculine/feminine that are inherent in everything that lives and breathes are only depicted in a certain way for one specific gender and not another gender. And it’s very prominent in straight relationships to the point where I tend to just turn off because I’m sick of seeing the same shit.
Spuffy are queer-coded.
Abby and Eric are queer-coded.
It’s not necessarily intentional. They just are because gender stereotypes don’t really exist with either of them. Actual queer, gay or WLW relationships don’t really ever have that problem because it would be absurd to throw straight specific gender stereotypes on to characters in a relationship of the same sex.
Think ‘BOUND’. Corky and Violet. There literally could not be a more gay butch/femme dynamic than them. And it doesn’t even matter because the stereotypes can’t be specific gender stereotypes because they’re BOTH of the same gender! They’re both women!
But this is almost always the case when it’s MLW. It’s very rare that I come across a TV relationship that isn’t gender stereotyped in that the “man” has to be the most masculist male and the “woman” has to be the most feminiest female. Especially nowadays.
This is my main problem with straight relationships in all areas of art/entertainment actually. Not just TV.
Spuffy has got to be the queerest non-queer relationship that I’ve ever seen in TV media.
Of course I’m going to die on a hill for it. I hope this made sense. I don’t know how else to express it.

A few reminders regarding media with queer characters
Critiquing media with queer characters is not inherently homophobic. For example, if I say that the romantic chemistry in the Simon Snow trilogy felt flat at times, that is not me being homophobic. That’s me critiquing the writing (and this opinion stretches to ALL the romantic pairings in that series, including the straight characters). It would be homophobic if I said something along the lines of “why do they have to be gay, I hate gay people, this sucks because it’s gay” etc but commenting on poor writing with regards to queer characters does not mean I don’t like that those characters are queer (I actually loved Carry On enough to ignore it’s flaws and I was delighted by the queer rep. It’s a delightful book. The second two books were hugely disappointing though)
Just because the characters don’t end up together, kiss, or otherwise does not make it queer baiting. If the characters have been confirmed within the work or outside of it by the creator(s) as queer, they’re still queer. Just because you didn’t see them kiss doesn’t mean they’re not queer. That’s not queer baiting (or in some cases even queer coding). It’s been odd to see people call Good Omens season 1 (before season 2 came out) queer coded when Neil Gaiman has said that Aziraphale and Crowley are queer. In that case, coding isn’t applicable, because it’s canon
Queer baiting is when audiences are told there is queer representation when there really isn’t or it’s extremely minimal (for example, Betty and Veronica’s kiss in season 1 of Riverdale being used for advertising when that was a one-off thing, or literally any sort of buzz around Disney finally having a gay character when it’s just two women in the background holding hands for a split second). Just because you thought there would be gay people (especially with no confirmation from the creators or media itself) doesn’t mean you were baited
Just so we’re all on the same page because some people really like throwing words around without actually thinking about what they mean
