Chapter 6: Angels

Story Masterlist
~~~~~~~~~~
Mc sat quietly as they were picking at their food. Listening to the chatter from the brothers around them.
They were thinking of their dream. They knew more about their soulmate - who they knew now as Belphegor. From what little information they got out of Beel the night before - Belphegor is his brother. And after meeting all the brothers so far - you knew he was the youngest.
That was all you knew of him. Yet, you were more curious on the figure ‘Lilith’ in your dream than your soulmate...
“Mc?” Mc looked up from their plate of food to see Beel looking at them. “Are you going to eat it?” Mc just pushed the plate in his direction as they were thinking for a bit more.
Mammon had entered the room by then and was arguing with his brothers after they were talking about how dumb it was for him to so easily get in a pact.
They pushed themselves out of their seat and started to walk out. They needed to think for how to get infomation of this Lilith person - considering how Beel acted to belphegor. Mc didn’t know if they would act the same to mentioning Lilith - and how would they get away with it? They had never seen their name anywhere or seen pictures of someone similar. It would give away that they knew something...
“Oi! Human! Wait up!” Mc turned to see Mammon heading towards them. They frowned a bit. ‘I have a name’ Mc mouthed over to the male who huffed.
Mammon didn’t seem to notice and started to rant. “What’s with Lucifer. He can’t go a single minute without bringin’ up Diavolo. It’s always Diavolo this. Diavolo that. If Diavolo told ya to jump off a cliff. Would ya do THAT too, Lucifer?! Knowing him. He probably would” Mammon huffed before looking at Mc. “Anyway, ever since ya got here human, its been nothing but one bad thing after another for me. So let’s get something straight.”
Mammon cleared his throat before speaking again. “I didn’t make this pact ‘cause I wanted to. and I AIN’T Happy about it! Everything I did, I did for my credit card - my baby goldie. If ya end up getting yourself eaten by some demon here at RAF, don’t blame me, cause I don’t give a damn. Ya got that?! Don’t go thinking you’re all great and stuff ‘cause you managed to make some stupid pact human.”
‘Would you call me by my name‘ Mc mouthed to him. “Hmph. Alright I’ll call you by your name...Pff, just kiddin’ Did ya really think I would just call you by your name human? You expect ME to call you by your name? You, a lowly human? Ha! Come back and ask me in another million years, and maybe I’ll consider it! You’d better learn your place, ‘cause if you keep sayin’ stuff like that, I swear I’ll make you my next meal!”
Mc stared at Mammon as he went on his rant. “What’s wrong human” Mammon looked at them. “Am I that intimidating. Do I frighten you? Then listen.. if ya stop talking back and just do what I tell ya, then things won’t be so bad for-’
Mc moved her hands to sign ‘stay’ which Mammon seemed to be unable to move. “wha- What’s going on??? I can’t move..!”
Mc crossed their arms and looked at the male in front of them who was panicked as he couldn’t do anything besides speak. “Wh-what’d you do to me?! Is this some kind of magic?! Listen up, h..human.. Mc...” Mammon grumbled a bit as he figured out he was powerless in this situation. “Don’t tell me this is all ‘cause of the pact?!” Mc and Mammon seemed to realise it at the same time.
Mc can have control over him... This was going to be fun..
“Alright class is finished!” The teacher called out as they left the room. Mc stared at their book filled with mostly scribbles. As they were packing away, they could hear whispers about them - mainly about them making a pact with Mammon.
“Huh, whenever you make an important announcement, the demons here couldn’t care less... But rumors..they really do spread like wildfire.” Mc jumped a bit as they heard a sudden voice nearby.
Mc turned to see Diavolo, Lucifer and another male standing beside Diavolo - who Mc didn’t recognise. “Just when I thought the uproar about the new exchange student from the human world had started to subside some, now they’re all freaking out about this.”
Diavolo sighed “Come now, don’t say that, Barbatos.” Diavolo soon smiled a bit. “Actually, I’d say that all this gossip is a good thing. It means everyone will be watching this human, which makes it hard for any demon to go after Mc’s souls when no one is looking.” Mc stared at him as they could hear what the group were talking about.
“Yes. Since Mammon’s not doing a very good job as a guardian... I told him he was to look after Mc, but he’s off somewhere else shirking his responsibilities. Though I figured this would happen.” Lucifer added on to the conversation.
“ I must say, I can’t believe you managed to forge a pact with Mammon, Mc. That’s no small feat” Mc looked at Diavolo and nods their head a bit. They were finally acknowledged into the conversation. “Anf what’s more, is that you did it in such a short time.”
“I suppose it stands as proof that you chose well bringing this human here, Lord Diavolo.” The male - Barbatos - added on. Diavolo soon realized something.
“You haven’t met Barbatos before have you Mc?” Mc shook their head. They felt a tap on their shoulder as they watched Barbatos started to move his hands to sign. “Pardon me. I suppose we haven’t met before. My name is Barbatos. I apologize for not introducing myself earlier. I have the honor of serving as steward to Lord Diavolo. Pleased to make your acquaintance.” Mc noticed underneath their sleeve was a compass in their favourite colour, placed in the same location as the one underneath their arm in a dark green.
Oh... He is another one of their soulmates....They honestly shouldn’t be surprised at this point...
‘It’s a pleasure meeting you as well Barbatos.’ Mc signed afterward. They didn’t expect him to sign as fast, it was hard to keep up with what Barbatos was saying...
“I see you’re putting your sign language skills to use Barbatos.” Someone else joined the conversation.
“It is quite a handy skill to have.” Barbatos responded to the new figure who entered the room. Mc noticed settled on the new person’s arm was a set of numbers in their favourite colour... They already knew those numbers represented their birthday. They didn’t need to guess that he was their soulmate too...
“Simeon. Why are we talking to these demons.” A new person added on, he was shorter than the rest and seemed to look a lot like a child.
“I see you brought your chihuahua along with you.” Lucifer commented to the new faces.
“I am not a chihuahua! How many times do I have to tell you that demon!” The short male huffed and crossed his arms, annoyed by the nickname. “Well what do you expect. I am a demon, after all. Now then, stop yipping at me. C’mere boy.. shake! Who’s a good boy?” Lucifer was teasing the small boy who was barking back at him to stop it.
“Allow me to introduce you Mc.” Diavolo smiled at Mc and jestered over to the new faces. “This is Simeon. He’s an exchange student from the Celestial Realm. Which is to say, he’s an angel.”
Simeon looked over and smiled a bit. “Well, hello, Mc. I’ve heard a lot of rumours!” Diavolo soon pointed over to the shorter male. “And this is Luke. Let’s see... You’re...a chihuahua, was it? or are you an angel?” Diavolo teases a bit
“Wha..! Diavolo, now YOU’RE getting in on the act too?! I am not a Chihuahua! I’m an angel!” He argued back. “Listen up! As you can probably tell, I’m a low-ranking angel. BUT I’ll have you know that in the Celestial Realm, I report directly to Michael the Archangel, as-” The angel beside him shook his head a bit.
“Luke, calm down. You need to learn not to make such a huge fuss about everything.” “But Simeon!”
“He’s right.” Lucifer joined the conversation. “That’s exactly why people call you a chihuahua, you know?” Luke glared towards Lucifer. “Usually the only one who calls me a chihuahua is YOU, Lucifer!”
“It’s nearly time for the first bell to sound.” Barbatos interrupted the group. As the group would apologise for wasting your free time. The only one who stayed was Luke.
He mutter something underneath his breath as he was standing with Mc. They looked at him confused and tapped his shoulder, mouthing out to repeat it - bending down a bit.
“Hey! Don’t lean down towarsd me like an adult listening to a child! You don’t need to come down to my level! I’m not a kid!” Luke huffed a bit before repeating what he said earlier. “...Never trust a demon Especially when that demon is Lucifer...” Luke paused for a moment before speaking again. “Listen to me. He’s a monster and a brute. He;s uncivilized, immoral and...and also..”
Mc looked at him and mouths. ‘Sadistic’ Luke took a moment to try and figure out what Mc mouthed at him.
“Yes! exactly! He’s the most sadistic of sadists!” Luke continued on how he didn’t understand why they would even bring humans to the devildom, but in the end the bell rang - cutting into the conversation.
“So, you’ve been warned. You get what I’m saying, right? Okay...” Luke soon left after to his class.
.
.
Mc stared at the ceiling as their thoughts were all over the place. Lilith, Their messy dreams, there was so much that was in their head. They would sit up and put their lamp on. They needed to write down everything... Get it out of their head.
Mc would take out a notebook that they grabbed randomly and wrote down one or two words about each thing that kept them up. “Lilith”, “Soulmates”, “Dream Lilith” and a few other things
“elp....” Mc froze as they heard a voice and turned to look around their room. “Help...Someone...help me...”
Mc pushes themself out of their desk in their room walking towards the sound of the calling. They reached a staircase at the end of the hall that went up, They went towards the case and grabbed onto the railing and started to climb before you heard a voice.
“Mc.” Mc jumped a bit and looked behind to see Lucifer standing at the bottom. “Stop right there. You’ll go no farther...that’s not a place for humans. It’s dangerous.”
Mc glanced at staircase before nodding a bit and leaving the stairs. The voice calling out to them didn’t stop...
“This is the Devildom.” Lucifer told Mc as they were coming towards him. “There are certain rules that must be followed here. Also, my word is law to you. You can’t defy me. Now then, go back to your room.” Lucifer placed his hand on their shoulder as he spoke to Mc, gently pushing them towards their room.
Mc went back to their room and sat at their desk. “Don’t ever trust a demon.”
Mc took a deep breath and started to write.
“Journal, Today is XXXX, and I will be making notes on what I discover here in the Devildom. There is something that Lucifer is hiding from me in the attic. I heard a voice call me from up there... I will update you when I learn more. And like Luke said ‘Don’t trust a demon. Especially if it’s Lucifer.”
Prompt: Meng Yao somehow ends up training under Baoshan Sanren
Something About Curses and Rabbits, by chutesandleaves (locked)
Literally that's it.
Kind of. There's only one rabbit. There are other rabbits but they're not featured here.
Explicit:
The Second Jade of Lan's late but incendiary sexual awakening, by KizuKatana (2nd in a series, 6 chapters, locked)
Lan Zhan was not interested in sex or romantic relationships. He had watched with a dismissive glance as his classmates made fools of themselves and wasted a considerable amount of time and energy on various hook-ups and romantic entanglements.
Aside from the fact that his lack of sexual interest kept him laser focused on his school and research, Lan Zhan’s reason for it was based on something more fundamental. He did not enjoy the company of most people fully clothed, and he couldn’t really imagine that improving if they were naked.
Which was why he found himself shocked at the visceral image that slammed through his system of grabbing Wei Ying by his messy ponytail, forcing him to his knees, and fucking his mouth until he cried.
Dream of Me, by KingdomFlameVIII
On a chance encounter in a remote village, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji investigate a series of kidnappings.
Wei Wuxian learns something about him in the process.
Mature:
Silence Like a Cancer Grows, by julomaiboulomai
Wei Wuxian is cursed to tell the truth on a nighthunt between the end of the Sunshot Campaign and Phoenix Mountain.
Reconnaissance, by TomatenMark
The Sunshot Campaign is over, but only just.
Determined to finally get through to him, Lan Wangji seeks out Wei Wuxian who is selfmedicating in a winehouse.
Turns out, once Lan Wangji has him in his grip, Wei Wuxian has peculiar trouble freeing himself.
Or alternatively, the fic that was born from my fascination with how effortlessly Lan Wangji could hold coreless Wei Wuxian down during the stolen Poenix Mountain kiss and what that might mean in a different setting.
Overwhelming Enthusiasm, by Shadaras
When the library’s alarms went off, Lan Qiren wearily expected to arrive to find an apologetic Wei Wuxian—possibly with one of the young disciples who looked up to him—explaining that No really I didn’t mean to touch that, I’m so sorry, let me reset that for you.
A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand, by FrostyAngst
“Jiang Cheng,” Wei Wuxian started, “Don’t worry about it. I am sure Uncle Jiang and Madame Yu will be able to make up somehow. Or maybe we can do something to help them –”
“Don’t stick your nose to somewhere you do not belong! This is my family matter, it is none of your business,” said Jiang Cheng.
Wei Wuxian widened his eyes.
When Jiang Cheng felt there was a deafening silence, he suddenly realized what he had just blurted out. He looked up, but he could not see what expression Wei Wuxian was wearing. His senior martial brother – his brother, already had his back facing him, walking away from him.
Jiang Cheng stretched his hand out, trying to reach out to his brother, but he was left frozen when he heard the words that came out of his brother's lips.
“I am sorry, I will make sure something like that will never happen again.”
- In which Jiang Cheng said something he shouldn't, and he needs to find a way to get his brother's forgiveness while the so-called brother is spending his time in Cloud Recesses, and rumors of an upcoming wedding that will be held in Cloud Recesses soon are spreading all around.
hold out your hands, by Aminias
Oh no, this is bad. How could he have forgotten Wei Ying's considerate nature? Lan Zhan wants to marry him; technically this isn't their first meeting so Xichen will have to allow it. The characters for Wei Ying's name are written across his cup and Lan Zhan files that information away. It will be important to get the proper spelling of Wei Ying's name right later, he wants no mistakes when they go to the courthouse.
or
Lan Zhan hasn't seen Wei Ying since he gave him his first gay awakening. Now five years later with Wei Ying in front of him he handles it with as much chill as you might assume.
Time Unwinds in a Kaleidoscope of Red, by vamprav
Wei Wuxian falls through time and hits the ground in the Burial Mounds. After taking stock of his situation he decides that things will be different this time, even if it kills him, starting with that disastrous reunion with his brother and future husband.
Mature:
Cutting Out a Different Path, by Sunflower1778 (locked)
Wei Wuxian woke up with an old back pain and the lack of a familiar warmth by his side. He groaned, moving his arm around the bed to feel for Lan Wangji.
Except what he felt was not a bed.
Startled, he got up only to find himself on a familiar slab of rock in a very familiar cave.
where the shadow ends, by colorfullysarah
It happens too fast.
A-Xian cries out, a garbled sound of pain, and Jiang Yanli stares at her brother in shock as he crumples. She can feel A-Cheng tense behind her as they both watch in muted horror as the sword that stabbed their brother is yanked free. And before she can even form the thought, she’s throwing herself forward over A-Xian; a protective barrier.
Her back screams in protest, but she cannot let A-Xian die.
Or, Jiang Yanli lives and attempts the impossible by bringing her son and both of her little brothers back home, the rest of the cultivation world be damned.
I whatever you, I will stand by your side, by Lizziewriter07
Wei WuXian almost died during Jin ZiXun's trap. He would have retaliated with all his might if it weren't for A-Yuan being terrified and right behind him and Wen Ning. Instead of killing Jin ZiXuan, he was hit by a fatal arrow in the heart while trying to protect the little boy. After disappearing from the cultivation world for five years he was... "invited" in a rather peculiar way to help two great clan leaders in a problem with their sworn brother.
Or,
Lan XiChen knew his younger brother like no one else. He knew him well enough to know that seeing Wei WuXian again after all those years of not knowing anything about the young master would make WangJi do something extreme. In order to be aware of what would happen and to help, ZeWu-jun proposes a sort of alliance with Wen Qing. Together, they come up with a well-crafted excuse to leave them alone for a while.
Paint it Black, by Forever_Marie
Wei Wuxian is saved by the Gusu clan after being abused by the Jiangs. Sort of. They kinda just take him and hide him for years. He is recognized at the lectures and his peaceful life is slowly unraveled.
(My take on a Wei Ying, raised in Gusu. Still a clown but with different baggage)
The Hostage
A dp x DC + transformers Rescue Bots fanfic (hear me out, I have written this combo before)
Tw: abduction, mentioned sex work (Kade makes an assumption), discussion of pedophilia and rape revenge (Jason assumes the worst of Morocco)
Charlie felt helpless when he made the call on the burner phone.
Morocco was back, and this time, he had stolen Cody right out from under them in the middle of the night, not a single lead in sight except a bad feeling cultivated by decades as a police officer in Gotham.
This case could get cold fast, and using the bots would just make Morocco move Cody more.
There was a rumor going around, of a two man hitman team that specializes in cases involving children, and he had contacts to the Police Commissioner. After giving him a call, he gave Charlie a code and a website, telling him that these two were legitimate hitmen and to tell them about Cody first.
"Are you Jason?" Charlie asked.
"Maybe. Why and how did you get this number."
"Police Commissioner Gordon gave it to me. My son has been kidnapped. We know who took him but I can't go after him."
"Your name?"
"Charlie Burns." Charlie heard the clicking of a keyboard.
"You're a cop."
"One who wants Thaddeus Morocco dead." Charlie said. "This call is on a secure burner phone, and I have a burn box out back waiting for it. I know you have a five thousand dollar price tag, with multiple accepted ways of payment. I am taking the third option. Five thousand dollars in a secure money transfer, paid in full before my son turns eighteen. He is eleven now, and I can get that in a month's time."
"Fee's a deterrent for people not willing to commit. This case is personal. Meet me outside the Hall of Inspiration in two days. I have to drive up from Jersey." The line went dead, and Charlie reminded himself that this was for the greater good. Even Chase had agreed that this was a risk that they had to take.
Morocco had gone too far.
Charlie was surprised that they were so young. The attractive redhead climbed into Chase's backseat, and after the black haired, blue-eyed man put a duffel bag and suitcase into Chase's truck, he slid in the seat next to her and wrapped his arm around her waist.
They drove back to the firehouse in silence.
Once they got there, the woman patted Chase's side doors. "No need to hide from us. I can feel your core from a mile away. You aren't from around here, and neither are the rest of the vehicles in this room."
Chase popped up on the dashboard. "How? I didn't speak."
"My brother wasn't completely human either. I learned how to spot other worldly shit at a young age. Since I know your secret, here's ours. My name is Jazz, and my partner here is Jason."
"I am Chase. The fire truck is Heatwave, the helicopter is Blades, and the bulldozer is Boulder."
"You said the missing boy is eleven? Is there anything that we should know about his connection to Morocco?" Jason said, taking out the bags and setting the duffel on a folding table and handing the suitcase to Jazz.
Jazz set it on the red couch and opened it. It was filled with various knives, tasers, and an array of clothes, from skimpy dresses to a formal suit. "Hey, does anyone have a rough idea of what this guy's into? Women, men, both, neither?"
"I don't see how that is useful." Charlie said, picking up Cody's jacket and clutching it tightly.
"We don't have time to discuss this, I just need the answers if you have them. Every second that kid is in that bastard's hands, he could escalate to, well, joining a registry."
Charlie's eyes went wide. "You think he could be will to ... touch him?"
"I don't think so, but here's the policy we work from." Jazz looked up from the spread of dresses. "Hey Jason, what's the first assumption to make in this line of work?"
"Everyone's a pedophile!" Jason yelled from the other side of the room, laying out his weapons. He turned to Heatwave. "Makes things simpler for us. I would rather be pleasantly surprised than unprepared to face it."
"Makes sense. I imagine you do a lot of revenge killings. Technically, I shouldn't condone it, but where we come from, we don't let rapists walk."
"Well, that's something I agree on." Jason surveyed the rifle and various handguns he had brought with him.
"The rifle is too much. My usual load out, then." He strapped on his gun holsters, then inspected each gun. He set one aside. "We don't have time for me to fiddle with 'em. I don't trust this one. Charlie, bring your service weapon and taser. If neither have been serviced or used in more than a few weeks, just take one of mine. Jazz, you are gonna be down a gun. Are the knives enough?"
"Probably. He's a tech guy. No grunts, so EMPs and c4 are on the table."
"No c4. EMPs will have to work, and we aren't going to be bringing the tin cans with us."
"Why not?" Heatwave said.
"Cause this ain't the time for a smash n' grab. We are using stealth. The plan is whoever is closest gets the kid, and the other one puts Morocco down. We will take care of the body. You guys stick out like a sore thumb."
"That's it?" Blades said incredulously. "That's the plan?"
"Anything more complicated than that is doomed to fail. Jazz, have ya made your choice?"
"Don't think it's gonna work. He's the wrong kind of scumbag."
"So just kill him?"
"Yep. Jazz, get your stuff. Burns, I want none of you near that part of the island until we leave. We won't have to worry about police involvement, but people talk. Stay here, and work as if it was a regular night. Send some emails, post on social media, and don't be afraid to leave timestamps as you go. We will be back."
Jason was seething under the surface, but he had to pretend to be calm. He and Jazz climbed into their rental car, stashed at an abandoned house, and drove up to the lab.
Morocco wasn't even hard to get to.
The EMP wiped out all his defenses, and he didn't even have a gun on him. Jason spoke first. "Stage it like a suicide. Use the knives from the kitchen." Jazz nodded, and Jason left to find Cody.
Jason found him downstairs. He was obviously drugged, thrown in a little girl's bedroom, laying on the bed and staring at nothing. He was conscious, at least, and thankfully, appeared unharmed.
Jason called Charlie's burner phone. "Cody's alive, but the bastard drugged him. He's too docile, and the drugs seem to be working their way throughhis system without issue, but he might not remember much."
"Dani will airlift him once you get back to the firehouse."
Jason tossed Cody over his shoulder. "Jazz! Time to go!"
Jazz took off her gloves and stuffed them into a burlap sack that they were going to burn later.
As soon as they got back to the firehouse, Dani checked Cody over and then bundled him into Blades. She couldn't tell by his symptoms what he had been drugged with.
Jason and Jazz watched them leave, then collected their things and left without a word.
Charlie wasn't surprised when news of a burning car found in an abandoned parking lot was featured in the morning paper, along with Morocco's apparent suicide. Mayor Luskey found him that evening.
Now with sequel! -> The After
NOW WITH ART! AMAZING SHORT COMIC BY PAPS
One day, a woman hires Jason to kill an unusual amount of people. The more he looks at the case, the more he is convinced he has to accept.
“I want them gone.” She had said with a straight face. “All of them have to die.”
notes:
This is set after the events of Lost Days and before he goes to Gotham to do Under the Red Hood stuff. I’m playing with timeline like a kid with building blocks. Any needed context is added in the story.
I know Dick killed the Joker because of Jason’s death. I KNOW. But Jason here doesn’t know. Don’t come at me in the replies.
There is no ship content per say, but is hinted in the future.
Jason looked up from the closed manila folder and glanced at the quiet figure of his new potential employer.
Caitlyn Williams.
It was a fake name, he suspected. If the black wig wasn’t enough of a clue about the fishiness of the situation, the way she omitted parts of her explanation, redirected his questions or provided just the basic information he would need for the hit was another big red flag.
Jason could work with this. It wasn’t as if he had the moral high ground here - he was living with a fake identity given that Jason Todd was dead and theoretically buried six feet under. Not even Bruce knew he was alive, but he had plans to remedy that.
In the meantime, he was trying to get some extra money since wouldn’t have Talia’s wealth forever and he had to eventually leave the nest, so to speak; and until he had a stable income he had to do small hit jobs like this one.
What this woman wanted wasn’t small, though.
“I want them gone.” She had said with a straight face. “All of them have to die.”
Evil. Lord created you evil with intentions of killing you by punishing you in the end for your misdeeds. You scoff everytime you think about it, your parents have taught you how to behave, how should the evils behave, the same way their parents have taught them and so on.. it was a lineage, even if it was evil. Even if it was inevitable, no matter how much you didn't like the idea of misleading humans, you always ended up doing it subconsciously.
As if this trait was present in your genes.
So you decided to take your swirl of evilness and direct it towards the bad people instead. For species of your clan, not harming at least one human once a week would make you lose your sanity, you start going insane, you feel your skin getting burned up.
In order to avoid the pain, the evil has to play its role. It was inevitable indeed. You grew up learning these things and at the age of eighteen you were officially assigned the job to mislead people into doing bad things.
And you did, because of you a whole rumor in Incheon spread like a wild fire within the past week- a rumor that there's a witch in the town.
You had your face hidden with a cloak when you heard a camaraderie talking among themselves on the table behind you. "Woah this soju is heaven!" A man said in ecstasy, "Damn it! This is the only thing keeping me sane while my woman is fucking other men when I'm not around." He said as his voice suddenly filled up with remorse.
"And you allow her to do that?" Another man snickered while whirling his tiny glass. "As if! I give her a good beating but she never fucking listens." He exasperated.
Your eyes went wide at the sudden confession. "Nah man maybe she doesn't know how beastly a man can get." A third man piped in, he continued, "if you allow me, let me fuck her too sometime." He winked.
The previous man scoffed, "Why would you do that when you have such a sexy woman as your wife?"
"You find my wife sexy? Dang you sound like you like her or something? How about we sleep with each other's wives for a few nights" With every passing minute their conversation kept on growing disgusting, how dare they think of their wives as some freaking toys?
"This is so unfair, why am I getting missed out?" The third person said pitifully. "I can share mine with you tonight." Another new voice spoke.
Enough! You couldn't hear these douchebags anymore so you stood up and left the bar tent.
Jimin switched on the news channel while he made designs on the pile of sand spread evenly on his wooden table. He used to run a workshop for people interested in sand art every weekends. It was early in the morning when he usually comes at 6 o'clock to clean his workshop then start making art for reference for his students who usually come at 9.
It was 8:43 in the morning currently when he made art while watching the news on the TV.
"Four men around their late thirties have been found hanging in the center square street, police have declared it as a suicide since there are no signs of any external perpetrator. Many locals believe that is the work of the witch who has been going around killing people who are known to be awful. We have a woman who's been the neighbor of one of the victims."
The news reporter passed a mic to a woman who seemed to be in her fifties, "The man who lived upstairs was completely vile, I often heard loud noise of beatings and screams of his wife and whenever he was away, I invited her over to spend some time at our unit. One day the man burst open our door and dragged away his wife harshly. All happening in front of my eyes."
"Haven't you thought of lodging a complaint to the police?" The reporter asked.
"I have but when the police arrived, the couple said there was no problem with them and after the police were gone I heard her scream throughout the night. It really really broke my heart. I have suggested her several methods to escape from him but the man always found her." Tears ran down the lady's cheeks as she remembered the incidents, "He became so delusional that his wife was actually going around cheating on him." She sniffed. "Poor girl, she deserved none of these, I'm actually content that her husband's gone. She can heal now."
Jimin closed the news as he heard the footsteps and faint chatters of his students coming in.
"Hey did you hear about the witch?" Rei whispered among her friends, "Yeah and I totally look upto her. They should call her a fairy instead of witch to be honest." Wonyoung pouted in dissatisfaction.
"Right! Hollywood has romanticized superheroes killing off villains, what about our witch who is actually punishing bad people in real life?" Yuna said while opening her converse to keep on the shoe shelf. Jimin had strictly instructed for no one to enter the art room wearing shoes, it makes the place messier given how they worked with sand.
"Alright everyone, gather around here and observe this sand art." He smiled at his students.
"This art.. " Jimin blinked at Mi-jo's side who felt uncomfortable looking at the artwork.
"What is it Mijo?" He asked. "Why did you draw someone dying?" She asked him.
He had a crooked smile, "Do you see his body getting mixed with the sand?"
She nodded lightly and the rest of his students paid more attention to what he was about to say. "You guys know about zodiac signs right?" Everyone said yes in unison.
He exhaled and began, "Water, fire, earth and air signs.. do you know what's common in all of these?" The students shook their heads at his question.
He had a fade smile, "when you look up, all these signs depend on different constellations but, when you look down at your feet that touches the ground, there's sand. The thing common in all these signs is that no matter whatever the person's sign is.. they are going to return to the very sand one day, without any discrimination." He explained.
Jimin chuckled, "Alright class, let's begin our work."
"But sir we have marble below our feet instead of sand." The rest of the class including Jimin started laughing at Niki's words.
"Hey you get the meaning right, so stay quiet." Chaewon laughed and said.
-
"Mom I get it that you don't care about me but I'm about to die and I don't even know why, yet how are you so chill about it?" You looked at her in bewilderment.
"WHAT? A death order? What did I do mom?" You were flabbergasted and circled around the table to reach at her side.
"I don't know, a notice came through the mail and told you to visit the wizard's house for any query." Your mother said while reading her book by the fireplace.
"Look, I'm not a human so don't expect any humanly love from me Y/N, I get that your previous life's mother was sweet to you, but I've always been from the evil clan, I don't care if you die or not."
"You are truly evil." You whispered in anger as you clutched the paper of notice and stormed outside.
You went to the building written in the mail and cross checked the address, you were at the right place.
There were some bold letters on the entrance. "Yarel academy? Is the wizard a teacher or something?" You pondered.
You went inside but the rooms seemed empty, that's when you heard something rustle, you quickly went towards the direction of the sound and found a person doing some work. "Excuse me, do you know someone named Seungho here?"
The person looked up, you contorted your eyebrows as you looked at him. Hoseok?
"It's me. Seungho." He looked at you with a spark in his eyes. "Do you need an admission here?"
Seungho? So he played with his name Jung Hoseok a little and made this pseudonym?
You scoffed at him, "Did you summon my death request on purpose?" you raised your left eyebrow. He smiled and looked at you, "Seems like you know me."
"Quit the play Hoseok!" Your words dripped with venom. He looked at your gaze, it was new, it was evil. But that's who you were.
"Woah woah calm down Y/N, blaming others won't take you anywhere." He said with his hands dancing.
His smile grew sinister, "I was afraid you'd have forgotten me, Y/N."
Your eyes twitched, "How could I forget you? You, because of whom I lost my life in Sandezel and has been reborn as the evil- meanwhile you?! You live the same even after being reincarnated once again. You should've been in my place instead."
Your eyes grew narrow and you strided near his table of sand and grabbed him by collar, you looked at his eyes with pure hate, his eyes which had no regret, no shame.
"Did you already forget? You told me to burn down the papers of the head angel saying that it was inked with the devil's blood?" He looked at you intently as you said so.
"But who told you to listen to me?"
"You were the fucking head angel's top most guard. How could I not listen to you?" Hoseok nodded slowly at your reasoning.
"So.. why did you do it? Why did you tell me to do it?" You asked him with wide eyes, you've been waiting for this particular day ever since your memories from your past life have returned, and that was when you were six.
"Did you forget as well already? You refused to be my girlfriend Y/N. If I couldn't have you, it was better for us both to die." He said as he grabbed your hand tightly to remove it from his collar.
"You're unbelievable Hoseok, even after you are reborn as the sand wizard, you still think we can be together. I would rather choose death again, and this time voluntarily. It's better than to be your girlfriend." You said but just then you felt something brush off your hand.
You grinned and looked at him with craze, "No need. Just kill me."
You looked down at your hand which he was still holding, you quickly snatched your hand away in fright.
"Relax, the sand that fell off your skin were just some dead cells of your skin, but you now know well that you evil can't touch a single hair of us sand wizards'. We can turn you into sand anyday, anytime, anyway we want." He grabbed your chin and made you look at him, "And just because I'm not from the evil clan doesn't make me ignorant from the fact that once the evil dies, they are never reincarnated. I'm not telling you to be my girlfriend this time, just sleep with me once.. that'll be enough and I'll hand you over the paper for your request for death." He smirked as he saw your eyeballs shake a little.
He liked it, he liked this aura of yours, it was strangely turning him on, "Don't you want to continue to save a few more victims before you die, Y/N. I'm sure there are more disgusting men out there that you want to kill. You need to live Y/N but- I'm going to kill you."
A tiny tornado of sand started whirling on his palm, "Tell me Y/N, will you give me what I want and survive to save innocent people or rather die in vain?"
You grit your teeth as the memories of the men inside the tent flashed in your memory, "Just one night right? Fine. Just one night and hand me over the paper."
He smiled and ceased the whirl of sand. "Good decision."
-
You came inside the house he had given you the address of. You opened your magenta colored cloak hanged it on the stand and went to the room he directed you to go through the text message.
You opened the door to reveal him half lying and supporting his head with his folded arm.
The door closed behind you on its own just like the main door.
You opened your shirt and pants and sat beside him.
He ran his hand along your elbow and he back hugged you. You felt his breath tickle the skin of your neck. His hand ran down to your back and he opened your bra, letting it fall. He started kissing your collarbone as he went down and tore your panty.
He kissed your neck with eyes closed, leaving open kisses on your neck then your jaw and then turned you around to face him.
He looked at his palm for a second and a pile of sand gathered in it, he closed his fist and brought it above your chest and let them fall slowly.
The sand particles rolled down your chest, he brought his hand and brushed off your breasts, a little roughly. "I shouldn't let any sand remain on your boobs so that i dont get them inside my mouth later on.. right baby?" You immediately closed your eyes as he picked each sand particle one by one off your boobs and then your nipple in a way that he was pinching them.
He brought his mouth near them and blew some air, "Now they look clean." Then he kissed your boobs and starting sucking one while his hand was busy playing with the other one.
He then came up and deep kissed you for a significant amount of time leaving you breathless so you tried sucking air out of his mouth. He detached and you both pant for air.
"Y/N... here... take this sand and write your name on my chest." He created another pile of sand and gave it in your hands as he laid down and made you sit on his dick letting it enter your vagina.
You thought it was just another demand of Hoseok so you did it without a question.
You leaned down and wrote your name on his chest while you were overwhelmed by the pleasure of his hands working on your ass. Writing your name was simple, anyone can do that even if they had almost no sense left.
He thrusted his dick deeper as you finished writing, it made you arch backwards. He repeated the action until you cummed.
He made you lay down and he went down to lick your pussy. You were so delicious, you were so evil. Everything about you made him crazy for you.
-
You woke up in the morning to find Hoseok missing from your side but instead there was a file of documents. You quickly sat up and looked at it. Those were the papers of your request and order of your death. You immediately tore them to pieces and burn them using your powers.
Finally you felt liberated.
You got up to leave his home just when you felt something tight in your ankle. You looked down to see a think chain forming and appearing to clutch your ankle. You forcefully tried to break it and also used your spells but it wasn't working out.
Just then Hoseok came and stood at the door. "Hoseok what the hell is this?" He came near and held your hand and you the chain disappearing. "Here, read this document, the breakfast is ready so come quickly." He kissed your forehead catching you off guard and you quickly stepped away. "What the fuck are you insane?!" He smirked and left.
Weird.
You opened the document and read-
"According the Act 578 section D-9 of the Supra Celestial laws, evil and wizard can claim each other by writing their names on each other's chest using water/sand. Once the act is performed they will never become separable, thoughts of leaving the other will result in immediate confinement at the same spot through water/sand chains with which the names were written.
With this act, we, the heaven coordinators and jury give our blessings to Miss Eun Y/N and Mister Jung Hoseok to become inseparable."
You gasped as you read the document, you felt dumbfounded, you felt numb. Last night he made you write your name on his chest and he would've probably done the same while you had no idea.
You felt vulnerable, you felt danger.
He was the dune of danger who now caused a storm in your life.
Hoseok smiled to himself.
TYSM my dandelions of a vast meadow for reading this fic 💖 💗 hope you enjoyed and ofc, ur feedback is HIGHLY appreciated❤ MWAH!!
* “Everyone in school thought you were dead.”
* Jessica says bluntly as you walk down the pink streamer filled hallway
* you offer her a fake yawn and a smile.
* “My dad came by for a surprise visit.” She looks confused before her expression smooths
* “Oh your real dad, not Carlisle”
* Carlisle contacted his counterpart, Eleazer to tell him you were running away with a man 300 years your senior
* So of course Eleazer came running -after he probably had a spat with Carmen about who would handle this situation better- to Forks on the first flight he found
* Only to burst through the door to see you and Emmett playing kingdom hearts in the living room
* “Oh, I see the rumors have been vastly exaggerated.”
* Cue -figuratively- sweating Carlisle who takes a sip from his mug
* Since he was already here you figured you would take a few days off from school and show him around
* “Is there anything in particular you might want to see?”
* Edward and Carlisle are looking pretty smug thinking that they’ve already shown you everything of note in the area.
* “I’ve always wanted to see the space needle in Seattle.”
* They both falter when they hear that. All the things they’ve shown you are things humans wouldn’t be able to see, hidden meadows, waterfalls, underwater caverns
* They never thought to show you human landmarks. Eleazer nods a growing smile on his face
* “Seattle has a lot of museums that I’ve wanted to visit as well”
* Carlisle let’s out a sigh of relief, none of his kids would be caught dead at a museum outside of a field trip
* To their dismay and Eleazer’s delight your eyes sparkle
* “Can we go to the pop culture museum and the arboretum too?”
* You don’t even pack, Eleazer tells you you can just buy whatever you need when you get there. You do take a duffel bag full of blood bags though
* And then you’re gone, you leave care instructions for your animals with Edward and you and Eleazer drive off towards Seattle in the rented Mercedes he got at the airport
* “Is it just me... or do they look happier with Eleazer than they are with us.” Edward’s only talking to himself, but Carlisle hears and the oncoming doting parent verbal and mental sputter makes him regret saying anything at all
* “it’s okay Carlisle, I’m sure they’re happy here with us too.”
* You guys stay at a pretty upscale hotel downtown, in the penthouse
* “Are you here on a trip with your boyfriend?” The receptionist asks, and Eleazar straight up starts laughing
* “This is my dad.” You say with a straight face and you can tell the receptionist wants to die
* “I-I’m so sorry, we usually get couples this time of year.” Right, it’s almost Valentine’s Day. Makes sense.
* Still there’s something super gross about people thinking you’re romantically linked to Eleazer
* The penthouse is very nice. There’s an infinity pool on your balcony, and three different bedrooms.
* The trip is really fun, you have a -pretend- meal at the revolving restraint at the needle, and spend the rest of the week museum hopping
* “She feels so familiar....” you mumble to yourself as you gaze at a portrait of a woman with long dark hair
* “That’s Carmen” Eleazer tells you
* “What?!?”
* “She was popular with artists even before she turned, it’s always been a hobby of hers to model” You’re just glad it’s not a nude portrait
* You take super cheesy pictures at the natural history museum, and even better pics at the pop culture museum
* On one of your last nights in the city Eleazer took you to a laundromat
* “I know we’ve been running out of clothes, but I’m sure the hotel has a laundry service”
* Eleazer just grins, talking to the attendant, who takes him to a hidden door.
* Well this isn’t sketchy at all
* Eleazer takes your hand in his as he leads you down a long narrow hallway. When you teach the end there’s a pretty nice bar and what appears to be a jazz club
* “It’s a speakeasy, I thought it might be a little fun for our last day”
* Being beautiful has its perks because the waiter doesn’t even card you, just brings you your dink
* “So...Garrett huh?” You groan, and Eleazer smiles
* You knew this was coming
* “Don’t worry, I’m not like Carlisle, if you like someone I like them too.”
* Well at least he isn’t acting like a total freak about the whole thing
* “I am surprised someone like Garrett is more your flavor though” you raise an eyebrow.
* “In comparison to who?” Eleazer gives you a funny look
* “Edward of course”
* You almost spit out your drink
* “Oh, is this one of those situations where the three of you are a couple together?”
* You start coughing and the waiter brings you a glass of water
* “We’re not together!”
* “Well of course you and Garrett aren’t together yet-“
* “Edward and I aren’t dating.”
* Eleazer just looks at you like you told him you’re pregnant
* “That can’t be right” he mumbles and you sigh
* “Why would you think we were dating?” The jazz singer belts out a high note and Eleazer patiently waits for her to be done so he can talk again
* “Well you went with them to Forks, and when you came to visit last year with him we all just figured it had happened naturally”
* Besides, Eleazer see’s the way he looks at you.
* Like you’re the epitome of your gender, like there’s never been anyone like you and there never will be again
* “We all? The entire coven thinks that?” Your fingers thread through your hair.
* What does Tanya think about that? She must be feeling pretty smug what with that talk she gave you all those years ago about how you would eventually date Edward
* Edward probably knows and just doesn’t even care, the criminal probably thinks it’s funny
* Eleazar watches you have a breakdown, taking a small sip of his brandy. It looks like you haven’t realized the way you look at Edward yet
* You look at him like you don’t have a single doubt. You trust him unconditionally, you know exactly who he is and where he will be.
* You look at him like he’s home
* “This is so embarrassing” you mumble and Eleazer smiles
* He guesses it’s not time yet for you to realize your feelings. Maybe it’s for the best, he’s not as bad as Carlisle, but the thought of giving you away at your wedding makes his heart ache.
* “The best cure for embarrassment is alcohol, drink up.” He grins when you clink your glass against his before gulping down the contents of your drink.
* Who knows, maybe in a few years someone completely different will show up and sweep you off your feet.
* You do talk about something really important with Eleazer though
* “Eleazer when do you think Aro will send for me?”
* Eleazer stops mid motion, his glass halted halfway between the table and his mouth
* “If I’m being honest, I don’t think he will for many years” Eleazer has an awkward expression on his face. “I think he’s afraid of you”
* You sputter
* The great and powerful Aro?! Alive for 1000’s of years. AFRAID OF YOU?!?
* “Oh don’t look at me like that, try and think about it from his perspective.”
* Your power is on par with Janes, but unlike her over the decade you’ve been a vampire your power has only gotten stronger. Your body’s natural despair and your desire to be human feed off of each other, compounding on each other to make your power that much more potent
* The only difference is that now you’ve learned to hide it, keeping your emotions in check so others aren’t hurt
* There isn’t a person alive that stands a chance against you at your full potential. You’re the strongest known vampire
* “Chelsea can’t bind you to coven with her loyalty like she does the others,” Eleazer takes a sip of his drink. “his only choice is to let you come back on your own volition, otherwise he risks a war.”
* A war he wouldn’t win, on your own it was dicey, all of them against just you could go either way
* But you weren’t alone anymore, now you have Tanya, Kate, Irina, Carmen, Eleazer
* And Edward. You know without a second thought Edward would follow you into hell if you asked.
* “Saving any discovery of remarkable talent”
* A discovery like Bella
* You’re not 100% certain, but you’re pretty sure your powers don’t work on Bella, the same way Edward, Jane and Alec’s powers won’t work on her
* And if she can really spread her shield to others-
* You’re f*cked
* “but the chances of that are slim to none.” Eleazer reassures you
* You give him a reassuring smile
* “Salud” you raise you glass and he smiles
* “Salud” he grins as your glass clinks
* You weren’t expecting the week to go by so fast, or to be having as much fun as you did.
* You were pretty sad when the end of the week rolled around and Eleazer dropped you off home
* “He’ll be back before you know it” Edward says, his arm over your shoulders, giving your arm a comforting squeeze
* “Yeah I know, it still feels bad though”
* Edward doesn’t say anything, he just holds you a little closer
* You’re thankful to the Cullen’s for taking you in and giving you an opportunity you might not have had otherwise
* But they’re not your coven, they’re not really your family
* And so now you’re here, walking in a bright pink and red construction paper covered hallway next to Jessica who’s talking about Valentine’s Day
* Ah right, today’s Valentine’s Day
* “Do you think maybe...Mike bought me a carnation?” She asks twirling a strand of hair around her finger
* “I’m sure he did”
* You’re actually sure he bought one for Bella, but you’re hoping the courtesy extends to the whole friend group
* You bought all your friends valentines, and that includes the Cullen’s and everyone on the cheer team
* The money wasn’t the worst part, they were only a dollar each, the worst part was having to write notes for all of them, it wouldn’t have been so bad if the girl at the table wasn’t giving you a dirty look as you pretended to struggle through writing 30 cards
* “How much do you want to bet Bella gets the most flowers out of all of us?”
* You would bet the entire contents of your bank account, but you’re pretty sure Jess can’t match your bet
* “Well, she’s something new to look at, and boys are dumb”
* Jessica blows a strand of hair out of her face. You know she’s probably a bit bitter since she’s started to notice Mike is interested in Bella and not her
* But you kind of get it
* Bella’s cute, but she’s no Cindy Crawford. And to add...she’s really shy, not exactly someone with a charismatic personality.
* The attention she’s garnered will fade in due time, Edward had told you as much
* “It’s the same thing as when we moved to town, most of these kids have gone to school together since childhood, so when someone new gets here it’s all they can think about. They don’t really like her, they just like the idea of her. The illusion of a choice”
* It made you a little sad to be honest, even worse was that Bella didn’t seem to enjoy the attention. She seemed uncomfortable every time a boy flirted with her
* “I almost feel bad for her, I get the feeling she’s not really into any of these guys that are chasing her” Jessica says, so you’re not the only one that’s noticed
* You’re a little surprised that when the student comes by with carnations you get two entire bouquets worth
* And then they come back the next period and give you another bouquet
* “Oooo someone’s popular!” Angela teases and you shrug. Most of these are from Alice and Rosalie, they each bought you three each
* You got a whopping 12 from Conner which feels a bit surprising
* You knew he was going after it, but you didn’t think he would bother to actually put any effort into his attraction outside of flirting with you
* You’ve got one from everyone in your friend group, a handful from others on the cheer team, Emmett and Jasper both bought you one
* The only person who didn’t get you one was Edward
* You wonder if he got Bella one? The thought seems unlikely since they were basically at each others throat the last time they were together
* So imagine your surprise when you walk into the hall to see Bella and Edward talking
* You’re gone for a week and it’s like they’re suddenly insta-friends
* In fact, Bella’s actually blushing, a carnation twirling between her fingers
* A light red carnation
* So he did buy carnations after all, just not for you
* And Edward...his eyes are sparkling as he looks down at her. A lopsided grin curling onto his face
* Oh, there’s that smile
* He says something to her and she pouts, slapping him lightly with the carnation
* They’re getting along just fine without your matchmaking efforts
* So you were the problem
* You should be happy, relieved even-
* But all you can feel is the sharp twist in the bottom of your stomach
* “Hey (Y/N/N), I see you got my flowers”
* You turn around to see Conner who’s looking at your half zipped bag, 3 bouquets of flowers popping out of the top
* “Oh, yeah thanks they’re beautiful.”
* “I’m glad you got them, I noticed you weren’t at school and for a second I was worried you wouldn’t be here today too.”
* He really is cute. He’s got chocolate brown hair and clear blue eyes, a splatter of freckles across the bridge of his nose. He plays tennis or baseball or some other irrelevant sport.
* He’s popular with the girls too, he dated Lauren a few times, and Jessica admitted she had a crush on him freshman year.
* “Are you feeling better now?” He asks, he looks genuinely concerned and it takes you back a bit
* “Yeah, my dad came for a surprise visit so we went to Seattle”
* “Oh that’s cool, what did you guys do?”
* You’re a little surprised that Conner O’Malley, f*ckboy extraordinaire, is Trying to engage you in an honest conversation
* “We just did all the tourist stuff, space needle, museums, food, the usual.”
* Conner smiles at you, hands fidgeting together
* “That’s cool, did you um-did you read the note with the bouquet?
* You didn’t notice there was a note, you swing you backpack around, picking out his bright red bouquet with ease.
* You hadn’t paid attention to the note attached than reading the name on the front to see who they were from.
* “Will you be my valentine” you read the note out loud, feeling confused. What does that mean
* He fidgets in front of you, from here you can see his ears are bright red
* “So would you want to go out sometime?”
* He’s asking you out? On a proper date????
* “We could go watch a movie, or um I know you like to ride those bikes in Port A-“ you do like to ride those bikes in port a
* You watch the his human boy fumble over himself. There’s no future with this boy, one day he’ll grow old and want things you won’t be able to give him.
* “I have a ton of homework to catch up on-“
* “Oh, yeah no, I get that”
* But maybe... maybe it’s okay just to pretend and let yourself be entertained by the experience
* “Would you want to come with me to the library? I’m totally lost on Trig”
* You know it’s not the most romantic place, but that’s part of the reason you suggested it. You want to give him an out
* He looks a little surprised but recovers quickly.
* “I’ll meet you after school then, we can drive to the library together”
* You don’t bother telling Edward, you just look to the spot where he’s with Bella, he must have heard
* His eyes meet yours, his mouth pinches into a slight smile and he gives you a nod before turning back to Bella
* What so just because he’s got a new friend you’re invisible now?
* Stupid Edward. Not like you care, you just wanted him to know he’d have to ride home with the others
* Maybe his new best friend Bella can give him a ride home
* “So you’re going out with Conner tonight huh?” Mike asks when you take your seat in biology
* Edward doesn’t so much as spare you a glance
* “He’s just helping me catch up on school work.” You shrug, pulling out your biology homework
* “I bet he’ll help you catch up on-“
* “You’re going out with Conner?” Bella interrupts, you’re grateful for it but at the same time: those doe eyes and innocent face irritate you
* “He’s just helping me catch up on homework I missed”
* “Couldn’t Edward hell you do that?”
* You try to not look at Edward
* But what the f*ck?!?
* Last week the two of them couldn’t even sit in a car together for a short ten minute drive, and now all of a sudden she’s asking why you’re NOT spending time with Edward?
* It’s so... irritating
* You feel a tap on your arm, and turn to look at Edward
* “Control yourself”
* Oh great so the one time he decides to acknowledge your presence is to tell you to control your powers because he’s worried about his little human girlfriend getting the whiplash?!?
* Seriously, f*ck off Edward
* “Mr. Barnes I have to go to the nurse.”
* You don’t even wait to hear his answer, you just grab your bag and walk out
* You keep walking, practically fuming until you get to the parking lot
* Well you can’t leave, you already told Conner you’re going with him to the library after school
* Not to add it’s going to look real weird if you don’t go the nurses office eventually after storming off like that
* But you don’t want to go there yet
* Queue you discretely crouching under a window, lightly tapping the glass
* “Rosalie, Rosalie can you hear me?” You whisper
* Rosalie head turns to the window, her eyebrows threaded together, you poke your head just slightly above the ledge and give her a small smile and a wave
* Well at least it’s always interesting with you around
* “What are you doing?” Rosalie asks when she meets you under the school staircase
* You give her a nervous smile before collapsing onto the floor
* She gives you a knowing look before sitting beside you
* “So what did king Brood do now?”
* Queue the Edward rant
* “I leave for one week and all of a sudden he’s besties with some human, when just last week he told me not to get to close to her”
* “That’s Edward for you, king of the brood and hypocrisy.” Rosalie leans her head back against the wall
* “You know he didn’t even get me a carnation?”
* Rosalie rolls her eyes
* “That sounds like him, if it helps he didn’t buy me a carnation either, he just doesn’t think things like this are important”
* “He bought Bella one.”
* Rosalie sputters at that, so you retell her all about the flirting you had to watch
* “What color was the carnation?” Rosalie asks, and your eyebrows thread together
* Why is that important right now?
* “Um I don’t know, not quite pink, not quite red, something in between.”
* Rosalie’s expression smooths
* So that’s his game
* “Don’t worry about it too much as long as it’s not a deep red it doesn’t mean love”
* Now it’s your turn to sputter
* “W-what why would I be worried? Edward can do whatever he wants, even if it is with some human”
* Rosalie gives you a knowing look, and you avert your eyes
* If Rosalie were cruel she might ask why you’re sitting out here with her instead of in class, if you don’t care about what Edward does
* But Rosalie isn’t cruel, at least not to you
* She pats your shoulder, and you sigh
* “Come on let’s go to the nurse so you can pretend you have cramps or something” you nod
* “Besides don’t you have a date with the hottest human boy at our school?” You groan and a teasing smile curls onto her lips
* “Not you too.”
* The date is over hyped for sure, it’s mostly you and Conner sitting at the end of a small table asking each other questions about the trig homework
* “So...are you supposed to use the radical formula for this one?”
* “I think so..do you remember the formula?” Conner scratches his head
* “Um I remember there was a story about a mixed up guy going to a party that’s supposed to help”
* Basically it’s more like you’re helping Conner with home work than him helping you Totally underwhelming
* “Sorry, I bet there are better ways to spend your Valentine’s Day” Conner scoffs
* “Are you kidding? I’m spending it with the hottest person at Forks HS, as far as I’m concerned this is a win” he grins and you smile back
* Well, it wasn’t completely a waste
* You roll around back home around 11:30, everyone’s gone, on with their own Valentine’s Day plans.
* You’re not surprised to see Edward’s not in his room either He’s probably out watching Bella or doing god knows what
* You know this is the way it supposed to be, it’s the best thing for you too, you know even with Bella in the mix Edward would never betray you
* Once she’s on your side you don’t have to worry about the Volturi. But still, there a twist in your stomach You don’t like this new Edward, even if it is who he really is.
* You want your Edward back
* You sigh as you walk down the hall and into your room Stopping in the doorway when you flick on the lights
* There on your desk is a bouquet of roses
* You have half a mind to think they’re from Eleazer or Garrett or something
* So imagine when you pull off the card to see Edward’s name attached
* “Glad to have you home, happy Valentine’s Day” - Edward
* You toy with the card, a small smile curling onto your lips
* Maybe he’s still your Edward
* Your Edward just more anti-social
It would be cool if we could see Hunters reactions to Philip more from Hunter's pov!
So. Belos had a new pair of prisoners.
And he'd asked exclusively for Hunter not to see them.
Normally the Golden Guard would've avoided the newcomers, and probably wouldn't have even known about them until Belos spoke to him about it. But rumors were spreading like wildfire that they were humans, and, well, curiosity might've killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back.
Hunter knew this was a Bad Idea. If Belos found out he'd probably be in his room for a week afterwards, nursing whatever fresh wounds he'd be sure to receive. And for good reason - the emperor told him specifically not to see the prisoners. But... a little peek couldn't hurt. Right?
So, after dark when the castle halls were mainly empty, Hunter sneaked out of his room and to where the new prisoners were being held. It wasn't a jail cell, per se - more like a small room with guards standing outside. Hunter had often utilized this room to hide his books on wild magic, but since his duties as the Golden Guard had stepped up he'd had less and less time to learn. It had two simple beds, a long window that stretched across the far wall, and a couple of bookshelves. Nothing fancy.
Rascal (the bird had recently insisted he chose a new name for them, and he went with the first thing that came to mind) chirped at him quietly from inside his hood, and he hushed the palisman as he approached the guards. He'd been given a new mask recently, so he didn't have to worry about the sort of mix-up that had happened in Latissa.
At first Hunter was sure they were going to call him out, but when he leaned closer, he could hear both of them snoring quietly. Unsurprisingly, both of the guards were asleep on their feet. He shook his head but was also thankful as he pushed open the door to the room as quietly as he could.
The two men inside looked up as he walked in. They seemed to be crouched around an open book, and stiffened as he approached. The first thing Hunter noticed was their ears; small and round, so they were human. Luz would be so surprised. That begged the question of how they got here.
The second thing Hunter noticed caused the kid to do a double-take; the taller human had the same eye shape, same nose, and same hair as the young witch. But that was impossible, because Belos said that Hunter's parents had died...
Hunter's attention turned to the second one, who was significantly shorter than his brother(? Were they brothers? They looked similar enough to be brothers), and his disbelief only quintupled, and was then replaced by a sharp spike of fear (Why did I think of the word spike why did I think of the word spike-?).
Hunter, as far as he could tell, had found himself staring at an older version of himself, and a younger version of Belos.
"Are you here to interrogate us?" the Belos lookalike asked, with a voice so similar to the emperor's it made Hunter's head start to hurt.
"We already told the last guards who came in here that it was an accident," Hunter's lookalike added with a grumble. "If we could get sent back to our time, that'd be great, thanks."
Hunter found himself rooted to the spot. This was - this was not right. The puzzle pieces that had been arranged so delicately in his mind reshuffled, and these two humans didn't fit anywhere.
"Who are you?" Hunter managed finally. Better than standing here in silence.
"Edward and Philip Wittebane," the taller, Hunter-looking human replied, motioning to himself and then his brother. Another piece clicked, albeit uncomfortably, in Hunter's brain.
One of the plentiful benefits of being Emperor Belos' right-hand man was the unlimited access to the Forbidden Stacks in the Bonesborough Library. He'd read Philip Wittebane's diary once, and found it extremely interesting. There had been a human on the Boiling Isles! He knew bits of trash fell through the rifts between realms, but living humans? It was so fascinating to Hunter when he was younger.
So Philip looked a lot like a younger version of Belos. Surely that didn't mean anything, even if Belos was human - what did it matter? He was still preparing the Isles for the Day of Unity and could preform magic with the help of palismen essence.
He'd still taken Hunter in.
But if Philip had a brother - one that he never even mentioned in his diary - then that threw things for a loop. Because Belos certainly didn't have a brother. Edward had most likely died back in the, what, 1600s? That also didn't mean anything, Hunter tried to convince himself. We probably look alike because I'm his descendant. I'm probably magicless because I'm descended from a human. It still doesn't mean anything.
So why does seeing these two surprise me so much?
"Well?" Bel- Philip asked, startling Hunter from his thoughts.
"Huh?"
"We introduced ourselves. You going to tell us your name?"
Before he could stop himself, it was already out of his mouth. "Hunter."
"Hah!" Edward grinned at his brother in triumph. "I told you I wasn't the only one with a name idea like that. See? Hunter is a great name."
"That is still up for discussion," retorted Philip. "I bet whoever named him was about as sane in the head as you are."
"That's something coming from you," Edward affectionately shoved his younger brother in the arm. Hunter assumed Philip was the younger of the two, anyways, seeing as he was a head shorter than his sibling.
Suddenly Rascal let out a series of frantic chirping noises and shot out of Hunter's hood, knocking off his mask. He let out a yelp and grabbed the golden piece of metal before it hit the ground and undoubtedly wake up the guards with a loud metallic clank.
The red bird paid him no notice and instead flitted around Edward's head, tweeting and chittering like mad. Hunter caught something like "You're ALIVE? Are you okay? How are you here? Did he hurt you? Is Cuddles here? When I get my-"
Both brothers stared at the bird as it came to rest on top of Edward's head. Hunter felt a flare of jealousy for some reason. Then two pairs of eyes turned to the young witch, and he quickly put his mask back on.
"Something weird is definitely going on," Edward said, rubbing Rascal's chin. Philip nodded, then stared at Hunter with those grey-blue eyes that were only supposed to be attached to Belos.
"Hunter..." he hesitated, but quickly regained his confidence, "this is probably really stupid coming from me. But can you help us get out of here?"
The Bard’s Sister
Geralt X Reader
Part 2
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
Masterlist
Summary: Geralt of Rivia and his long time travel companion Jaskier find themselves in Jaskiers home land. A place Geralt had not only never seen nor heard of. Jaskier is ready to reunite its his family after traveling and exploring the world for 20 years. The one person he missed the most was his baby sister (Y/N). Who he hadn't seen since she was 5. The journey is long, but the pay off is grander then they would ever be able to predict. This is still part of our introduction to the main characters and their personalities in this story. Next chapter will be more about (Y/N) and Geralt. I know I am trash at summaries.
I would like to state that I do plan on adding a pregnancy in the future to this story. (I know Geralt is steril. Just bare with me and the story line I’ve created) I just wanted to let eveyone know because I would hate for someone to get attached to the character and story only to have a plot line they do not like for themselves. I know not everyone like pregnancy plot lines but I’m such a sucker for dad!Geralt.
The sun was high in the sky, it was nearly two in the afternoon. The garden below the large windows of the castle was shining brightly. The birds chirping, children playing in the river that ran through the center of the city. Life was good. The sun was shining a little brighter today. It was because Jaskier was finally home.
I hadn’t realized how much I missed him till he was back. After breakfast, we walked around the castle’s courtyard. He and Geralt introduced me to their horses. To my pleasant surprise, Roach took a particular liking to me, as did her owner. He was nothing like the rumors. There were many times that I traveled out of our borders into the western part of the continent, and every time people had nothing but cruel fowl things to say about the poor witcher. Sure he wasn't perfect, but no one was.
“Would you like to see my studies?” I asked as we walked down the long corridors that lead to three separate staircases. I glanced between the two men that were on either side of me.
“Your studies?” Jaskier asked looking down at me. I couldn’t help but smile.
“I told you in my letter that I’ve been working with a man over the last couple of years. He has trained me well. But I have many books, drawings notes all sorts of stuff that I’ve written about the world outside of our home.” We approached the base of the three staircases.
“I’ve never seen a castle so big in my life.” Geralt’s sultry voice flooded my ears once again. I couldn’t help but smile up at him. He was so polite. He never turned his nose at us. I knew he didn’t have a very positive history with others like us. Yet he sent no judgment towards myself or my parents. He just listened, followed, and learned. I had never met someone so open to the world yet so closed off that the same time, and we’ve barely even begun to get o know each other.
“Our mines are some of the richest you’d ever see in your life. From coal to diamonds. Nearly 85% of all ores get mined and sent out to the rest of the continent.” I started walking up the staircase on the far left, the stairs led up a long corridor that was open and bright, the mountains that shielded us from the rest of the world in perfect view. Both were still by my side. I stopped at the first picture that hung on the wall.
“That’s my great-great-grandfather, he only recently passed but he started all of this.” I looked towards Geralt. He was listing intently, his eyes on me as soon as I looked in his direction. I knew Jaskier knew our history so I wasn't too worried if he was paying attention or not.
“He came here from Termieria with his 6 younger brothers. The mines here had been closed for many many years. The town was completely deserted. There was a serious necrophage problem that no one wanted to deal with, so they just up and left. Leaving the plentiful mines full for someone else.”
“Necrophages?” Geralt questioned his eyebrow tiling in curiosity.
“The people who inhabited the lands before we did, had not known of the creatures. Didn’t properly bury the dead. My grandfather wrote in his journal that when they got here the streets were lined with bodies that had been drug out of their shallow graves, crypts had been broken into. His best guess is that a flue came before the people fled, killing many in a short period.” I started walking ahead of the two men, down the hall towards my room. I pushed the door open walking in placing my books on the night table as they followed in slowly behind me. Their eyes wandered over every inch. Jaskier started wandering through the room looking at every picture on the wall. Most of them were sketches, mostly of him. Or the people he sang about in his ballads. He grabbed one off the wall and laughed softly.
“Who is this supposed to be?” I walked over to him and laughed softly, my cheeks turning a soft shade of pink.
“That, that uh was my first sketch of Geralt.” The sound of his name got his attention, he was trying to be polite and not snoop. Although I didn't care if he wanted to look around. He walked away from the door over to Jaskier and me. He lingered behind me, very close behind me. I could feel his body heat on my back and his warm breath on my face as he peered over my shoulder at the parchment Jaskier was holding.
“How old were you when you did this?” Jaskier asked.
“Eighteen, maybe nineteen. It was after your first balled about your adventures with Geralt that started to spread like wildfire. I went to a tavern one night with a friend and someone was singing it. I was intrigued by the song and asked them who they sang about. I was told they didn't write the song, our very own Prince had. So I listened to them play it over and over. I asked around the and so see if people knew what the famed witcher looked like. I got conflicting answers from nearly everyone I asked.” Geralt reached his arm over me, his hand gently brushing my arm, sending chills down my spine. His hand grasped the paper as he looked at it closely.
“They got the hair color right. That was about all. Some people have some very wild depictions that I drew, but none in any seriousness.” The particular one they were examining was nothing like Geralt. They got everything wrong but his hair color. Many people said he was a scrawny young lad with the strength of thousands of men, making him easier to blend in with the crowds. Granted this was very early on in my brother and the Witcher’s adventures together so not many people had paid close attention to the witcher.
“You drew what people described?” Geralt asked.
“Yes, some people tried to pay me but I told them to give it to the needy. I traveled with Serena for a couple of weeks right after I turned nineteen, we didn't venture far past the mountains but it was enough.” I couldn't help but frown at the memories of the people in the towns scowling and sticking their noses in the air when I asked about the Witcher and my brother.
“Can I see the other ones?” Geralt’s question took me by surprise.
“I don’t know…”
“Oh come on, you're very talented (Y/N), let him see them,” Jaskier said and shoved my shoulder playfully. I smiled softly at him but shook my head.
“It is not that I’m self-conscious of my work, it’s the depictions of Geralt outside of our Kingdom, for the most part, were cruel and inaccurate beyond belief. I only drew them because I was wasting their time asking questions. I honestly don't know why I kept them.” I nervously rubbed the back of my neck, the idea of Geralt seeing those ugly, horrendous, depictions of himself made my stomach turn. He didn’t deserve the hate he received. I never understood why people despised Witchers the way they did. I only experienced it outside of our kingdom. For some reason, whether it be our pure lack of monsters or the abundance of sunshine, my people seemed happier. Less judgmental than the outside world. I was grateful to live in such a kind and caring place, but it does get rather dull after a while.
“I’d still like to see them.” Geralt said softly as he handed the parchment back to me. I sighed slightly uncomfortable with the idea, I took the parchment and hung it back up on the wall.
“Let’s make a deal,” I said turning to them both.
“Oh boy.” Jaskier teased.
“I’ll show you the drawings if you let me paint you now, so I have an accurate model. Not just words.” Geralt’s eyes looked over me, his arms crossing over his chest. A small smirk formed over his lips as he watched me intently.
“If you want to draw me so bad, just ask dove.” The nickname nearly threw me off my feet. My heartbeat quickened at a rapid pace and I couldn't even look him in the eye. Jaskier snickered and pulled out a chair by my desk. He was enjoying this way too much. I cleared my throat swelling thickly.
“T-that I uh..” I had never been one to not have words. According to my parents, I talked too much. Just like my brother. Yet here I was gobsmacked and wordless. I grumbled under my breath moving to the desk Jaskier was sat at and made him move. He got up and I sat down. I opened the top hatch of the desk, lifting out folders and files of archives. Some containing spells, some more drawing, history of the continent, and even monster facts that I knew I wouldn’t ever need. I placed the folders on the floor. Jaskier grabbed a few and moved to my bed plopping himself down kicking his feet up. My head snapped over to him as he put his dirty boots all over my fresh linens.
“Jaskier. If you don't get your boots off my bed, I will castrate you.” I warned turning back around rummaging some more. I heard him kick off his shoes. Geralt chuckled behind me.
“Fiery are we.” He teased but I ignored him. Finally, at the bottom of all my work, I found the folder. I held it up to him, not wanting to watch his face as he looked at the disgusting depictions of himself.
“Thank you, dove.” His lip was right next to my ear. I felt frozen.
I couldn't tell if it was genuinely just a flirt or if this was directed to me. Sure I had heard the rumors of the witcher and his many women of the night, including the sorceress Yennefer. But this seemed different. I snapped back to reality when he let out a low chuckle. I turned around and stood up, peering over his arm to see what one he was looking at. This one was particularly nasty. His eyes were slanted like snake eyes, large fangs protruded out of his mouth, and his hair was a crazy mess. His eyes were blood red, his nose crooked from supposedly being punched so many times. His face was littered with so many scars he had scale-like skin. I remembered the man who gave me that description.
“I met this man in a tavern in Solveiga, it’s the furthest I've ever been from home.” Jaskier stood up walking over and looking at the drawing Geralt was studying carefully. I didn't know why he was spending so much time on such a cruel piece.
“He said you came through a few winters prior, he and a bunch of the townsmen had gathered some coins so you'd get rid of a Striga. I knew was lying the moment he opened his mouth.” Geralt looked up from the payment, his eyes meeting mine.
“Why do you think he's lying?” I took the folder from him, and just as I expected the parchment below the picture he was looking at was full of my notes. Every time I traveled and spoke to people about it. My brother or his companions took incredibly detailed notes, I never wanted to forget anything. I took the parchment out before handing him the folder back. I began to read the notes:
“This man takes me for a fool. No more than some silly girl. While he sits here and tells the tale of the Wolf he seems to be forgetting the incredibly important fact about Strigas, they only hunt during a full moon. He keeps saying that the beast was hunting their people every single night, slashing children, men, women, animals, every night for months. He’s using it to fuel the people's hatred of the witcher. He’s attempting to claim that they sent for him as soon as they knew of her presence. Claiming the witcher waited nearly three months before coming to discard the beast.” I flipped the page over scanning the meticulous notes.
“He said the beast was killed on a new moon, he said he remembers it so vividly because of the lack of moonlight while he escorted the witcher to her crypt. I may not be a witcher, but I am not stupid. The man is trying to make matters worse by lying through his crooked yellow teeth. How dare he tarnish a name for the sake of his prosperity.” Geralt chuckled at the last part making me look up at him, he had an amused smile on his face, his eyes twinkled as he looked at me.
“Why are you laughing?” I tilted my head to the side slightly and he just shook his head, putting the folder of parchment into the desk. He knelt and began picking up the rest of the folders neatly placing them inside the desk where they came from.
“Because you got so mad that someone lied about me, yet you at the time were not even sure I was a real thing-“
“Person.” I quickly corrected him. His eyes glanced at me, he didn't move his head as he continued placing my papers where they belonged.
“What?” He asked.
“You called yourself a thing, you're not a thing Geralt. You're a real living breathing person.” His eyes found my own again. My heart raced as he studied my eyes. I had never seen anything so beautiful. His eyes were like hot pools of gold and honey. The complexity of the colors was mesmerizing.
“And I wasn't only mad that he was lying about you, I was mad that he was lying in general. About something anyone could disprove if they just picked up a book on monsters.” I noticed the parchment with the drawing he was just looking at was on my bed. I grabbed it to put it back on the desk. Geralt's strong hand gently grasped my wrist stopping me. His other hand gently grabbed the parchment from my hand.
“I’d like to keep this one if you don't mind.” I looked at him shocked.
“Why that one?? Of all the ones I've done you choose one of the most inaccurate and the crudest?” It made no sense to me. Why did he want that? Was it some fun game of his to think he was just some stupid monster?
“Because it shows your talent in a way the others don't. And besides, you got my nose perfectly. No one can do that.” I sighed heavily not liking the idea of him possessing such a cured drawing that was drawn purely on lies.
“Fine. Keep it.” He smiled vicariously. I’d let him keep every single one if he smiled like that all the time. The smile quickly vanished when Jaskier came back over with the first file he took. The one he had been studying was full of my notes on herbology and alchemy.
“You are incredibly smart (Y/N), I felt as though I was reading Yennefer’s notes.” A huge smile spread across my face at his compliment.
“Thank you, Jax.” Geralt was now walking around my room, hands tucked under his arms as he studied the drawing and notes hanging on the walls. Some drawings were of monsters, some of the random people I’d met on my short travels, some maps I’d drawn up so I’d remember where I wanted to go when I had the chance.
“Your talent is very wide-ranging, little dove. I have to say I’m very impressed with your knowledge.” That blasted nickname nearly kicked me off my feet again.
I looked out my window noticing the sun was getting lower in the sky.
“If you'd like to get new clothes I’d suggest we do it now, it’ll be dark soon and the shops close earlier in the week.” Gertrude turned to me, nodding his head.
“Please. These pants are so tight I’m afraid I may lose my legs.”
We walked down the street. The sun was close to setting in the sky. The cool air kissed my bare chest as we walked. It was a comfortable silence between the three of us. For the first time in my life, I felt comfortable in silence. I hated the quiet with most people, it left room for negative thoughts, negative energies. Most times when it was unbearably quiet when I was present was because I was shut down from talking by the people around me. I know they meant no harm, I knew I had a lot to handle at times. I was just lonely. Board. I only had a few true friends. Most of the people I grew up with were married and with children now. I spent a lot of time alone, I liked being alone. It gave me space to think about the world. The world outside my small one.
We approached the seamstress, walking through the wood door. A small bell rang in as we entered. Hildi walked out from the back, a bright smile on her face. She was a sweet older woman, not much older than my mum. She had been running this shop for as long as I could remember. She was the best seamstress in the country in my opinion.
“Princess (Y/N)!! What a lovely surprise!” She walked around the counter and hugged me softly. Her hands-on the sweater I was in. She made it for me many years back for a birthday gift. She always had the best gifts. Full of love. I did adore the woman. Her attention turned to the men next to me. Her eyes grew bigger, her hand gently coming up to her chest.
“My gods. The rumors were true. Jaskier!! How wonderful it is to see you again!!” Her hands wrapped around my brother who hugged her back. I couldn't tell if he remembered her or if he was just being nice. As she released him she looked at Geralt who was visibly tense, scared that she may try and hug him.
“You must be Geralt of Rivia!” He nodded.
“Rain!! Get out here!! And bring me my Witcher’s guide!!” Geralt's eyebrows furrowed at the mention of the book. He shot me a glance and I just smiled. A few moments later Hildi’s daughter Rain appeared. She was my age. We knew each other in school. She was never nice to me. Picked on me. Would make jokes about Jaskier not being around. I never told anyone, in fear people would think I was nothing but a stuck up princess. Her presence made me uneasy. I slowly took a small step back, inching closer to my brother. Rain’s eyes landed on Geralt. I could practically see the drool pooling in her mouth.
“Gods save me.” She moaned out. I had to fight off the urge to cringe at her outward burst.
“The tales are true then?” She looked directly at me.
“So maybe you weren’t lying all these years.” I scoffed and rolled my eyes.
Hildi was very blind to her daughter's cruelness. After her husband passed away it was just her and Rain. She’d do anything for her. I understood that. She was a devoted mother and wife. I knew how heartbroken she was. She walked to Rain and took the book from her hand and grabbed a quill that had been dipped in ink. She turned to Geralt, a very soft smile on her face.
“Would you sign this for me?” His eyes bulged out of his head.
“Y-you want me to sight your book?” I held back a giggle at his shock. He truly wasn't used to being appreciated.
“Yes, please. If it is not too much to ask. Your stories were what got me through my husband’s death. Had it not been for the ballads and tales of your great bravery I may have not made it through.” Geralt’s shoulders softened at her words. He nodded his head and walked over to the counter. She opened the book to the first page and he scribbled down his name before giving her a soft smile. She gently placed her hand on his arm and squeezed.
“You are truly a great hero here Geralt. If our country had a mascot, you'd be it.” Jaskier chucked lowly at her comment making me swat the back of his he’d. He hissed in pain and looked at me. I glared at him.
“Do not ruin this for him,” I whispered.
Hildi turned her attention back to me and smiled.
“What can I do for you today my dear?”
“Well as you can see, Jaskier has a sore taste in fashion and also doesn’t understand sizing. I was hoping you could fit them in some better, more comfortable garments. Maybe a set of nice clothes for my party as well?” She gleamed. She hurried around her counter, grabbing a piece of parchment and measuring tape. She came back around and wasted no time in messing the two men. I sat down at a table by the window and watched as she rummaged through somethings in the back of her store.
“So you're like a real witcher?” Rain’s voice caught my attention. She was leaning over the counter, her dress pulled down, the cleavage of her breasts on clear display as she dumbly curled her blond hair in her fingers.
“No. I'm a fake one.” Geralt said back unamused.
“But like are the rumors true?” She asked leaning even further over the counter. She was trying so desperately hard to get him to look down her dress. But he was simply uninterested. I felt my heartburn with envy. I hated that it did. He wasn't mine, he was nowhere near it. But the thought of him looking at her like that made my blood boil.
“Rumors about what?” He took a step back from the counter slowly making his way over to where Jaskier and I were.
“Ya know. About your huge cock.” Jaskier and I both choked on our spit. My hand flew over my mouth to keep my laugh in. It was a good thing her mother’s hearing wasn't all that great. Geralt looked visibly uncomfortable. He sat down in the chair next to me, his fingers pinching the bridge of his nose. Jaskier and I were both trying to get ourselves under control after her question. She was completely unfazed. She thought she was hot shit.
“Common witcher. Tear me apart. Show me the real monster you can be.” That sentence made my grip on the chair so tight I thought I could’ve broken the arm in half. I probably could have if I did not have any self-control. I’m much stronger than I look.
“Do not call him that.” I hissed. My teeth were clenched so hard I was sure I was breaking them. Her eyes flicked over to me. She looked me up and down trying to size me up.
“Call him what? A witcher. Honey are you dumb. That’s what he is.” In a second I was inches from her face. I could feel my blood pumping thru my veins.
“Do not ever call him a monster again.” I was a bit shocked at how mean I sounded. I had never been this angry with her before. I wanted to punch her stupid smile in more than anything.
“(Y/N)..” I heard Jaskier’s voice behind me. He was very close to me. My hands were balled in fists at my sides. My knuckles were turning white with how angry I was.
“I promise you, studying princess, he's been called worse.” She smiled cheekily at me and her hand came up and she attempted to pat my face like I was a dog. My reflexes were much faster than she realizes. I grabbed ahold of her wrist in an intron grip. I began to squeeze and bend her wrist back away from my face. Her face contorted in pain. She wasn't expecting me to be as strong as I was.
“I said-'' I squeezed harder, and she gasped slightly as she tried to pull her hand away. “Do not call him that.” I threw her hand away from me before turning around and walking by the window. I hadn't realized both Jaskier and Geralt were standing behind me.
Moments later Hildi came out completely oblivious to the scene that just took place. She had a cloth sack filled with clothes and placed them on the counter.
“Alright, dearly that’ll be 45 coins.” She said as she wrote down the total in her book. I stood quickly pulling the amount from my coin purse and putting it in her hand. I smiled at her as best I could, Jaskier grabbed the bag of clothes.
“If something doesn’t go right, bring them back.”
“Thank you Hildi, very much.” Geralt said a charming smile on his lip. He gently shook her hand kissing the top of it.
“Thank you, Geralt. It was a pleasure meeting you. Don’t be a stranger.” She patted his cheek as a mum does. I turned on my heels and walked out of the shop. The cold air hit my hot face. My blood pumped slow and hard through my veins as the anger disappeared from my body. Jaskier came out of the shop and threw his arm over my shoulders leaning into me.
“Thank you.” He whispered lowly, Great not being very far behind us as we walked to the castle.
“For?”
“Defending him. Many people don’t realize how much he’s heard throughout his lifetime. I’m glad I’m not the only one who wants to help.” I turned to him and smiled. I leaned into his side hugging him gently before, turning around walking backward as I looked at Geralt.
“If you would like, I’ll show you both to your rooms, and you can change. We can then have tea in the garden and I can draw you.” A soft smile graced his lips, his eyebrow rising softly.
“You seriously want to draw me?” I nodded my head and stopped walking, but he didn’t. He kept getting closer and closer till he was a few inches from me.
“Yes, Geralt I do. You have a special spot in my heart, not just because I believe you are a true knight. And many people are just too scared to admit that, but also for keeping my brother safe all these years. You deserve to feel appreciated.” His features softened as his eyes searched my face before settling on my own eyes. His hand gently came up and he moved a small piece of hair from my face.
“A deal is a deal, little dove.” I felt as though my soul was being sucked out through his hand. Every fiber in my body wanted to pull him closer to me, to show him love, and tenderness. Something I knew he never actually had.
“Good, follow me,” I said with a smile.
After I showed them to their rooms; my brother’s old room not far from my own, and Geralt’s which shared a wall with my room, I went down to the garden. My easel, charcoals, and paints were set up on the table as they came down from changing and freshening up. Geralt looked more beautiful in clothes he could breathe in. his attire was so simple yet he made it look like the finest silks and jewels. It was a soft cotton button-down, it was loos on him, his pants were tight, but in a way that allowed him to move and feel free. I could tell by the way he walked he felt much more comfortable and in his element.
“You look like you feel better,” I said with a smile. Even Jaskier changed. A white shirt. And some black pants. He looked as he always did when I was a kid. The obscene choices in fashion were only adopted after he left home.
“I do.” I plainly said, a small smile on his lips. He and Jaskier sat down and I poured them tea. They both snacked on a few fruit tarts while I began sketching the background of the garden. allowing them to eat and not have to sit still just yet.
“So...while I draw maybe you could both share a story?” I glanced behind my paper and looked at the two. Jaskier smiled and leaned back into his chair fixing his hair and popping open a few buttons for the portrait.
“What story do you want to hear?” Geralt asked. Leaning back, his shoulders relaxing, a small piece of hair fell from the bit that he had tied back. It looked deliciously messy. It made him look disheveled, nearly like he was right out of bed.
“Wait!” I yelled and grabbed his hand gently, pulling his hand back softly.
“I like it. Keep it.” his hand went back down to his leg to rest. His eyes watched me for a few minutes. I studied their faces beginning my base sketches.
“What story shall we tell her Geralt?” Jaskier asked as he closed his eyes and tilted his head back to the sky, the last of the light kissing his skin.
“We could tell her about the Djinn?” Geralt said back, glancing at Jaskier before looking back at me, a coy smile on his face.
“A Djinn?? I’ve only ever read myths about them. You encountered one?” My curiosity was blossoming, the urge to get more details about the creatures I had been taught about.
“Geralt here was going onto day gods knows what on no sleep. He was beyond grumpy.” Jaskier tilted his head back up and looked at me with a smirk.
“The git said my singing was like a pie with no filling!!” I couldn’t hold back my laugh. It was much louder than I wanted, not very ladylike at all.
“Oh… I may have to steal that one.” I said in between giggles, whipping my eyes.
“I was hoping to use a wish from the Djinn to help me sleep. But unfortunately, your brother got in the way.” As Geralt spoke I moved into his details on his face, my eyes traveling all over his beautiful face. From the way, his brows arched to the cute little dimple on his chin. His face was beautiful. Some scares were prominent enough that I could see them if I looked hard enough he had one on his cheek, it looked newer than all the others, the skin being a bit lighter than the rest of his skin.
“What did he do this time?”
“He decided that because I told him I no longer appreciated his singing that he would take the Djinn away from me till I took back what I said.”
“And let me guess, you didn’t take it back?” I glanced at him from behind my easel, he was watching me closely, his eyes slanted like he was studying a pray.
“No. No, he didn’t. And I almost died!” Jaskier shouted dramatically causing my eyes to drift from Geralt over to him.
“Don’t be dramatic Jaskier,” I mumbled, putting down the charcoal I had been using. Now turning my attention to the paints I had in front of me. I started mixing the colors Id need for Geralt’s skin tone.
“No, this time he’s right. He did almost die. Unfortunately for Jaskier, he refused to let go of the vase the Djinn was in. While we tugged on it, the lid came off. Maybe the Djinn knew I was a witcher and its curse wouldn’t work on me, or maybe it was just annoyed at Jaskier. Either way, it attacked him.” My eyes were focused on the painting, brows furrowed as he spoke. I waited a moment for him to continue but he didn’t.
“I’m listing Geralt, please continue,” I said my eyes moving to his, the colores pooling in my head as I prepared for what pigments id be using to paint them.
“I don’t want to interrupt.” I shook my head a soft smile on my face.
“I will,” Jaskier said as he sipped his tea, looking at me.
“The Djinn attacked my throat. Made it swell, I was coughing up blood.” My painting stopped as I looked at him. My stomach sank a little as he spoke. I knew Jaskier had been put in harm’s way before but hearing the first-hand accounts made my stomach ache.
“Geralt took me to an elven healer that wasn’t too far from where the river bed was. Unfortunately for me, he couldn’t help me. But he knew of a mage that could help.” My hand started to paint again, filling in the sketch with colors on Jaskier’s face as he spoke.
“We can skip over those details Jaskier.” Geralt huffed crossing his arms over his chest.
“Why? Don’t want my baby sister knowing that we had to sit threw an entier orgey just for you to speak to the mage?” Jaskier snickered looking away from me to his friend,
“Jaskier, shut up.” Geralt grumbled. His eyes avoided my own when I went to look at him.
“An orgey?” I had heard the word but hadn’t ever fully understood what it was.
“What’s that?” I questioned looking at my brother. His head fell back as he cackled.
“Oh dear sister how you’ve been so sheltered from the world.” My cheeks flushed red at his words.
“Jaskier don’t be rude,” I mumbled grabbing a fine liner brush from my pile. Adding some final detail into Jaskier’s blue eyes.
“It’s when a very large group of people get together in one room and have sex.” The blood rushed to my head at his words. I could feel my ears turning red. My brother was right. I had been sheltered about sex in my family. I didn’t have friends who I could talk to it about, and never really had anyone in my life I was willing to have sex with.
Unlike many women my age I never viewed my virginity like a sacred rose that no one could touch, I just wanted it to be lost to someone who deserved it. No someone I was forced to allow to deserve it.
“Oh look at how red she is.” Jaskier snickered standing up and poking my sides. I smacked his hands away glaring at him. He was now able to see the nearly completed painting. All I had left was my Geralt’s eyes and some details in his hair.
“Gods (Y/N), this is amazing.” He whispered his hand on my shoulder. I smiled softly, swallowing the spit that had gathered in my throat thickly.
“Thank you, please sit down and continue your story.” Jaskier did as I asked.
“The mage was Yennefer. She helped me. Saved my life. The mage and I may not get along, but I do owe her my life.” I smiled softly as he spoke of the mage I had heard so much about.
“I’ll be sure to thank her myself if I ever come across her,” I said with a smile. My attention turned back to Geralt who didn’t look please at the topic of our conversation. His eyes were on his leg that bounced slightly. He was anxious.
“Geralt love, I cannot see your eyes. That’s nearly all I have left.” At the sound of my voice, his head tilted up so he could look at me in the eye.
I smiled sweetly at him. I broke eye contact as I added in the different hues of orange and a bit of red. Some gold flecks showed themselves in his inner iris. The depth of the color was so enchanting. I could paint just his eyes forever. I finished with his hair after a few minutes of silence. Both men just enjoying the warm afternoon air. They both looked relaxed, peaceful, safe even.
“I’ve finished, boys,” I said whipping my hands on my apron. I stood up and turned the easel around to the two. They both sat up straight, eyes wandering all over the painting.
“You, my dear sister are beyond talented.” Jaskier mused looking at me, a bright smile on his face.
“We both are.” I smiled at him. Geralt was still examining the painting, his eyes flicking over every inch of himself. I couldn’t tell if he was pleased or not. It made me nervous.
“I know the hair isn’t perfect. I’m still trying to get the brush technique down-”
“It is perfect.” Geralt interrupted me, a smile on his face as he looked at me.
I smiled back at him, my heart beating a little quicker.
“Can I keep it?” Geralt asked.
“Seriously?” I asked him.
“Well, actually it’s probably best you keep it. I don’t have a home, so I wouldn’t want to ruin it…” I smiled softly, taking a step closer to him.
“I’ll keep it safe but if you ever have a place that you want to keep it, ill get it to you,” I said, softly stroking the stray strand of hair behind his ear. His face tilted up as he looked at me.
“I think I’m going to turn in for the night boys,” I said gathering my items in my hands.
“What about dinner?” Jaskier asked.
“I’ll grab something from the kitchen, I’m quite tired. I need a bath. I’ll see you both in the morning.” I said hugging Jaskier goodnight. I turned to Geralt, courage surging through my veins. I bent down and placed a soft kiss on his cheek.
“Goodnight Geralt.” His cheeks turned a very, very soft shade of pink, but only for a moment. Our eyes locked again.
“Good night, dove.”
Chapter 1- To Hogwarts
August 3rd, 1938
The heat of the sun washed over the houses as summer reached its peak. Children would run along their lawns, laughing and enjoying as they used their squirt guns to propel water at each other. In an attempt to distance themselves from the ongoing rumors of war approaching, the adults would talk amongst themselves about their daily routines and such as they supervised the energetic kids that wanted to enjoy the last month of summer before they had to head off the school again.
On a nearby porch, you stood alone, watching from a distance. Last summer was different, you had been playing with the other kids in the neighborhood, but that changed once things around you started to become odd, thus sprouting rumors from the residents of the neighborhood.
You had been able to make things move from sudden outbursts of emotion, things would fly around the room when you waved your hands around, and at one point you had managed to make your younger brother flip upside down and stick to the wall.
Your mother on one hand was shocked, she screamed whenever something would fly past her, and let out frustrated huffs whenever you managed to make your plate of food disappear whenever you didn’t feel like eating whatever was on it. Needless to say, it was a very rough time for her. Your father on the other hand was impressed. When you first showed signs of being able to do these things, you had never seen him happier than he was at that moment. After talking with your mom, he took you aside and told you that you were a witch.
Of course, it took many hours of trying to convince you since it's been drilled into your head that magic was just something that was found in fairy tales. But once you were able to believe in your abilities, you were nothing but excited, but sadly, not everything could stay happy for you. The families had taken notice of strange things going on in your household, but your parents had excused them by saying it was just pranks that you and your brother had been playing on each other. But as time went by, the parents of the neighboring kids had gotten cautious of your family, and especially you. They had told their children who were your friends to stay away from you and to not speak to you under any circumstances, which led to you spending your last year in school in complete loneliness. Rumors spread across the neighborhood about you, multiple horrible lies were said about you. The kids at school made your life miserable at school and after school.
But not all things were bad. Soon after all the kids had started to ignore you and bully you, you had gotten your Hogwarts letter during your school year, and when you learned what it meant for you, you were so happy. After enduring the mean glares and snide remarks that the other kids would give you during school and after school hours, you were filled with glee when you had found out that the following school year you would be starting somewhere new, surrounded by people like you.
But for now you stood on your porch, alone. Fortunately enough, your younger brother was still welcomed by the community, so he did not have to face the same isolation as you. It didn’t matter, however, if giving up these so-called “friends” meant that you could discover more about your magical heritage, then you would have given them up at any time.
August flew by quickly, and before you knew it was September 1st. You and your family stood at Kings Cross Station as you said your goodbyes. As a goodbye present, your dad slid a bracelet around your wrist, telling you that it was special, and you couldn’t lose it when you went to Hogwarts. Your mind was too occupied with other things to fully listen to what he was saying, so you nodded every time he stopped talking, hoping that he’d believe that you were listening to what he was saying. Fortunately, he had taken you to Diagon Alley during the last week of August to get all the supplies you needed, everything but a pet, saying you were too young to care for an animal of the wizarding world and should focus on your studies for now.
With a few kisses and hugs, you said goodbye to your family and boarded the Hogwarts express and found an empty compartment. Sitting down, you stared out the window, completely lost in thought. You were snapped out of your mindless trance when the compartment door opened. It was a girl. She had Dark brown hair that looked messy, she was out of breath, almost as if she had run here. With her chest heaving, she pointed to the seat across from you and mouthed, “Can I sit here?” You nodded with a smile and watched her as she sat down across from you, letting out a breath as she made contact with the seat.
“Sorry for the intrusion. All the carts were full, and I barely made it on the train before it took off, I hope you don’t mind.” Her hands raised to her head, patting down the stray hairs that were tangled with the other parts of her hair, trying to make herself look like she hadn’t just run all the way to the station. “It’s no problem at all, it would have been a little depressing if I spent the train ride alone. I’m y/n l/n.” Introductions were always important, and if you really did want to start over at Hogwarts you needed to make a good impression on people, and perhaps make new friends. “Well, I'm happy to have saved you from a lonely train ride. I’m Melissa Monro, nice to meet you.” She reached out her hand for a handshake, and you gladly took it. “If you don’t mind me asking Melissa, why did you barely make it aboard?” You questioned, still curious, as to why she had to run all the way here when the train always left at 11 o'clock without fail.
“My mother wasn’t ready to let me go off to a foreign school alone, so she practically did her best to delay me getting to the station. My father managed to get me to the station a mere 5 minutes before the train had to leave, and I ran all the way to the entrance.” You learned that Melissa’s mom was a muggle, and her father was a wizard. Her mom never really liked magic that much, and she was protective over her, saying that going to a school where she wouldn’t be able to come home unless it was for holiday breaks was rubbish. It reminded you of your own mother. The not liking magic part, at least.
“Enough about me, what about you y/n?” Melissa asked.
“What about me, I’m just glad I managed to get away from my old school. They started treating me like an outsider after my magic started to show. Hopefully Hogwarts is better.” You sighed as you finished your brief life story, head hurting as flashbacks of what had happened to you entered your mind.
“Oh, I'm sure Hogwarts will be better, no worries. The people who hurt you in the past can’t get you there.” She gave you a warm smile, it managed to cheer you up slightly. It had been so long since you saw someone genuinely smile at you, other than your family members.
Melissa and you continued to talk about random things, the both of you felt like you had clicked immediately upon meeting each other. While talking to each other, another girl entered the compartment, stumbling as she opened the door. Both you and Melissa looked at her right as she walked in, or rather wobbled in.
“Are you alright?” Melissa asked.
The girl, who had red hair that was bouncing with every step she took, groaned as a response. She leaned on the seat next to you, keeping herself distant, so she wouldn’t fall on you if she lost her step.
“Do you need help?” This time you were the one who asked her a question, but she answered the same way.
After a few moments of her trying to catch her breath she answered both of your questions with a proper answer, “No don’t worry, it’s just a headache. I’ll be fine soon.” She slurred with her words like she was drunk
“A headache is causing all of that?” Melissa scooted closer to the red haired girl, trying to observe her closely to make sure she wasn’t going to collapse in the compartment.
“I should get a teacher.” Melissa was about to open the compartment door, but the red haired girl grabbed her wrist and begged her not to, saying that she will be fine in a few minutes.
Luckily the girl was telling the truth, after a few minutes of complete silence, she sighed and stretched her arms into the air.
“I’m sorry for walking in on the two of you, all the other compartments were full.” Both you and Melissa nodded, understanding her problem of finding an adequate place to sit.
“So why were you acting like that? Are you sure you’re okay?” you asked her.
“I am okay, for now at least. Lately I've been getting extreme headaches for no reason at all. My parents took me to the doctor, but not even they could figure out what was wrong with me. Sorry if I scared you in any way.” she relaxed her shoulders, finally being able to sit down without feeling like her head was being ripped apart by an invisible force.
“Good to know you’re alright, blimey, you gave me a scare. I’m Melissa Monro, and this is y/n l/n.” Melissa was pointing her thumb towards you, the red haired girl now turned to face you, her green eyes observed you curiously.
“I’m Azalea Ravens. Pardon my manners but, have we met before?” she was still looking at you when she asked her question, her eyebrow raised as if she was confused on seeing your face.
“No, I’m sorry, I don’t think we have met before.” You shook your head while answering, her gaze still hadn’t left your face, now looking more carefully than before.
“That’s odd, I could have sworn I’ve seen you somewhere before, or someone that looked like you.” Her eyes left yours and turned to the compartment door. And awkward silence blanketed the three of you, not sure what to talk about next. Luckily, Melissa took the initiative to strike up a new conversation to ease the awkwardness.
“So Azalea, where are you from?” Azalea stopped looking at the door and turned to face Melissa.
“I’ve lived in Ireland for the past 7 years, but before that I lived in Spain with my dad.”
Azalea revealed that she was a muggle born, and that when her parents found out she could do magic, they believed she was possessed by a demon and tried to cleanse her. It wasn’t until she got her Hogwarts letter that they believed that she wasn’t possessed, and she had developed pure magic skills free of any satanic influence.
“Your parents tried to bathe you in holy water? That is the funniest thing I've heard in a while.” The three of you had been laughing as Azalea explained the multiple things her parents tried to do. She also said that her parents divorced when she was really young, and that her mom was the first to find out about her having magic. When her dad found out, he blamed it on her mom, and it led to a big fight between them, and that’s when she got her first headache.
“What caused your headache today?” you asked. From her previous experiences, all of her headaches were caused by an event or meeting someone, so maybe she had just met someone at the station that made her head hurt.
“It started right after I bumped into this boy at the station. I was walking past him, and he looked at me with a blank expression. My head started to hurt a little after the encounter and just grew into...that.”
“I heard that Hogwarts has a superb hospital matron, maybe if you visit her she can tell you why you have been getting headaches.” Melissa piped in with a suggestion. The headaches had clearly caused Azalea immense pain, and if they started when she discovered she had magic, maybe they’re related.
“It’s not just headaches. I also get visions during my headaches. Like today when I bumped into the boy, I saw flashes of two people looking at the stars, but their faces were blurred, I heard laughter between them, but I still couldn’t tell who they were.” Azalea bit her lip as she thought of what to say next, but she suddenly made eye contact with you and her eyes widened a little.
“Now that I think about it,” Azalea began, scooting closer to you and observing you again like she had done a while back, “one of the people laughing, sounded like you.”
You let out a small laugh, “Me? I haven’t looked at the stars with someone in years.”
“Oh! Maybe Azalea can see the future.” Melissa beamed, clearly excited with her supposed discovery.
“Future? What do you mean?” Azalea asked.
“My dad told me that some people in the wizarding world can see the future, but they’re extremely rare. Maybe you’re one of them.” You and Melissa were looking at Azalea, who seemed a bit flushed at the sudden attention.
“Nonsense, I couldn’t possibly see the future, it’s probably just something else.”
hii! i swear i read your request rules but i’m still worried this doesn’t follow them. anyway i figured i’d ask and you can obviously decline ahahah. i just read Gray and it’s so well written and makes my heart shiver and i wanted to ask if you’d write a part 2 or a one shot/scenario of having levi as a soulmate in the same eye color soulmate au as Gray? thank you !! :) (^・ェ・^)
From Cindy: I apologize for taking so long to get to this! It took me a while to get an idea I liked, and then I had trouble getting into the mindset to write it. Inspiration finally struck though, and this is the result! I hope you like it!
Soulmates (Levi x GN!Reader)
Based on the same AU as Gray (Levi x Gn!Reader)
⚠️angst and hints of sex work (Levi’s Mom)⚠️
Levi loved safety
Being born in an extremely run down and sketchy part of the city was one of the worst fates a person could experience. Ever since Levi could remember, he’d been burdened with warnings from his mother who had learned most lessons about living amongst the dregs of society the hard way. He never stepped a foot outside their tiny one room home without hearing her voice expressing concerns about who he talked to, which streets he went down, how late he stayed out, and which shops he visited. There was danger everywhere and no one to protect him.
“Levi, stay close to me,” the woman would say to him when he was younger. Even going out in the middle of the day was a risk for them because his mother had a reputation. In order to feed him and keep the roof over his head, she’d reduced herself to a line of work that garnered an uncomfortable amount of negative attention. In a world ruled by the existence of soul mates, everything about their lifestyle was wrong and all it took was seeing a woman with duel colored eyes and a child for someone to know she’d committed the biggest taboo.
At first, Levi didn’t understand why anything about his mother’s appearance would cause such a stir. He’d seen plenty of people with two colored eyes, including himself. As he got older though, his curiosity grew and one day he made the mistake of asking about his father. The pained look on his mother’s face filled him with regret immediately, but he sat and listened to her intently as she explained the ways of their harsh reality.
“Your eyes are a promise,” she’d told him as delicately as possible. “A promise not to share yourself with anyone until you meet the person who you are destined to find and be with forever.” Levi had been filled with sadness for his mother when she admitted to breaking her promise. It was clear that she’d only committed such a disapproved act out of absolute necessity. People were judgmental though and could only see the fact that Levi’s father had not been the woman’s soulmate, which is why her eyes remained mismatched.
“You can still find them,” Levi had tried to hold on to a glimmer of hope for her, but she just smiled sadly and shook her head. The likeliness was low at her age, and even if they happened to cross paths, her past and status as a single mother would drive any respectable person away.
Levi loved stability
After learning about and coming to terms with the truth of this mother’s situation, Levi became determined to help her out in any way possible. He didn’t want the woman sacrificing herself for him any longer. And once he got older, he begged her to start staying home while he did what he could to provide for them both.
“It’s not your job to take care of me, Levi.” She’d smiled at this thoughtfulness while cupping his cheek in her delicate hand. “Everything I’ve done will have been worth it as long as you can have a better life than me.”
He understood her sentiment, but was too stubborn to give up. It was hard to find honest work in a town full of desperation and poverty, but Levi did his best. He took odd jobs here and there, and tried not to get mixed up in any of the bad business that ran rampant in the area. The money he earned wasn’t nearly enough to cover the cost of his small home though. After a handful of threats from the landlord to toss them out on the street, Levi knew he had to do more.
Levi loved familiarity
Resorting to petty theft went against everything Levi’s mother had taught him, and he knew it would probably break her heart if she ever found out. Still, he couldn’t allow their home to be taken away, or worse, his mother to return to the work she’d done before.
He had to be smart though. Being caught stealing in his neighborhood could get him killed. Going into the nicer parts of the city would be a better bet. He didn’t know the area as well, of course, but there was the benefit that he wouldn’t be recognized if anyone saw him. If he did happen to get caught by law enforcement, he’d end up in a jail cell rather than a cold ditch somewhere. Neither option was ideal, but stealing from the rich would have to do until a better plan presented itself.
Things went decently for a while, and Levi was a quick learner. He figured out what worked and what didn’t without having too many close calls. He made sure only to take enough to get by since the thought of being too similar to the criminals he’d grown up around made him sick to his stomach. It was only a matter of time though before his luck ran out. Rumors of a pickpocket spread and people began to act more cautiously about carrying their valuables out in the open, forcing Levi to get more reckless with his stunts.
It was on a particularly frustrating day that Levi caught a glimpse of you. More accurately, he caught a glimpse of the leather purse filled with coins hanging from your hip as you chatted away with a friend outside a popular confectionary. With practiced movements, he slipped into the crowd and made his way in your direction, thinking that snatching up the money would be simple and easy. He’d made a mistake though. Your pouch wasn’t tied up like he was used to, but secured with a metal ring designed specifically to prevent the very act he was trying to pull.
You begin to turn around as soon as you feel the tug on your belt and Levi freezes for a moment, trying to think of a way to get out of the situation. One word from you and everyone in the vicinity would be on him. As soon as your duel colored eyes met his however, something happened that put all other thoughts out of both of your minds. Levi watched in shock as you blinked once, twice, and then suddenly your left eye changed color completely to match your right. The look of initial alarm on you face softened and Levi knew he had to get out of there. He turned on his heel, ducked his head down, and walked away as quickly and as naturally as his legs would allow. He waited for any sign that he was being pursued for a moment or two and then broke into a run.
Levi loved certainty
In his panic, Levi didn’t even greet his mother as he rushed past her once arriving at home. His heart was pounding and a light sweat covered his forehead uncomfortably. He went straight to the bathroom to stand in front of the cracked mirror above the sink. It took a few seconds to muster up the courage to look into his reflection and find that everything that had happened was real. The two colored eyes that he was so used to were gone.
“Levi, sweetie, are you all right?” his mother appeared in the doorway, looking scared. “Did something happen at work? You’re not usually home this early!” He turns to look at the woman who notices his matching eyes immediately. Her hands come up to her mouth which spreads into a smile and tears spring into her eyes. “Congratulations! Who is it?”
The question makes Levi feel ill. Never in his wildest dreams did he imagine he’d meet his soulmate while trying to rob them. And if his mother found out, she’d be so disappointed.
“It doesn’t matter,” He tells her stiffly. “I can’t be with them.”
The words were far from enough to satisfy his mother though, and she nagged him the rest of the evening with questions about what you looked like and where he’d saw you. He kept his lips sealed until he’d had enough of the interrogation.
“Please, my obligation is to you and nobody else,” he tells his mother. “I don’t know anything about this person. Not only do I have no interest in being with them, I’m certain they have no interest in being with me either.”
“Levi, this is all I’ve ever wanted for you,” his mother begs, taking his hands into her own. “Do not live your life feeling empty and alone. Take this chance and find your happiness.”
Levi shakes his head, refusing to even consider it. His only focus had been himself and his mother for so long that it seemed ridiculous to add a third person into the mix now. It was better to pretend he’d never met you, and he imagined you would feel the same way. How disgusted did you feel knowing your soulmate was the infamous pickpocket? It would be even worse once you found out where he lived and about his mother. Surely you were both better off without each other.
Levi hated the thought of a life without you
Despite his resolution to continue on with life as normal, it only took a few days before Levi caved and went back to the spot where he’d encountered you. The image of your face had never once left his mind, and there was an incessant need to see you again that he could not ignore. He thought perhaps one more look couldn’t hurt, and he had to go back anyway if he wanted to collect enough money to pay his landlord that month.
“I hoped you’d come back.”
Levi had been sure you wouldn’t recognize him after only getting that small glimpse, but apparently fate had engrained his face into your memory as well. He whirled around, his gaze immediately locking with yours. It was wild to see the familiar color of your eyes looking back at him. He had no idea why you’d be here looking for the person that tried to steal from you. The cautious smile on your face as you introduced yourself put him on edge as well. “What’s your name?”
“Levi.” He hadn’t meant to say it, but part of him already felt an attachment to you. What was more, hearing your name for the first time felt like a fire had ben lit inside of him. He shakes his head to get his mind straightened out. “I shouldn’t be here.”
“No!” the panic in your features makes him falter, “Please stay. Can’t we talk for a moment?”
“I’m sorry,” Levi backs away, trying to fight off the instincts rising up inside of him. He didn’t want you to be sad and he didn’t want to disappoint you. He knew though that it was inevitable that he would.
“Levi…”
Hearing his own name spill from your lips was enough to have him second guessing everything. Would he really be able to go the rest of his life without hearing it again? He wasn’t sure he was strong enough to stay away. He’d already come crawling back once already after all. As a last resort, he knew what he had to do. He had to tell you everything. And he did. He revealed his entire life story to you without hardly pausing to take a breath, knowing that every detail would drive your further and further away. Having so soulmate at all was much better than having a soulmate like him.
By the time he finished talking, tears had welled up in his eyes as well. His mother had told him to take the chance for happiness, but instead he’d violently thrown it away. A few seconds passed and suddenly you were slipping your hand into his. It was the wrong reaction to the story but he can’t help but tighten his grip around yours anyway, wanting the comforting feeling you brought to last forever.
“I’m so sorry you and your mother have had to fight so hard just to survive,” you tell him softly. “But you won’t have to live that way any longer, or at least, I want to join the fight with you.” The genuine kindness and determination in your voice was overwhelming for Levi. Somehow he knew you meant every word, and the image of a brighter future for all three of you began to take shape in his mind. He had no idea if such a future was actually possible, but with you at his side he knew he’d definitely be willing to try. Being born in the roughest and seediest part of town had to be one of the worst fates a person could experience. Levi knew that first hand. He also knew he wouldn’t trade that fate for the world if it meant having you as a soulmate.
Slender bros rewritten by me
Cause I want character development
(This is mostly Offender, trender, and Splendor. Also if you like Slendey/slender dad you might not wanna read this cause I do not make him a good guy in the slightest)
Possible tw for mention sexual assault, pedolophilia, necrophilia, and zoophilia!
To start off, Offender is not a rapist, he isn’t a pedo, and he doesn’t fuck animals
He doesn’t do anything without consent, plain and simple. Him being all those things was a rumor started by someone he fucked in the past who got caught cheating. They said Offender forced them and the rumors have escalated since with his legend.
He actively avoids children cause he doesn’t like them. So he literally couldn’t be a pedo.
He doesn’t hate kids, he just prefers to not be around them.
He won’t fuck someone with kids unless the kids are out of the house and somewhere safe.
He’s wary about fucking 18 and 19 year olds and usually doesn’t
Occasionally if he sees a kid sad while he’s on a walk or whatever he’ll give them some daisies or something. Though they kinda just appear near the kid. He doesn’t actually go near them.
Though he will fuck old people. He has no problem with that. But he will go gentler cause they’re frail
He likes animals, but not like that. Like.. ew
He has a kind of respect for the dead, even people he’s killed to eat, so he’d never do that. Also it goes back to the consent thing. They can’t consent so he ain’t gonna fuck them.
He’s pansexual.
He’s very kinky, obviously. He’s willing to do pretty much anything in bed
He prefers to top but he has no problem being pegged-
Has tried every drug there is.
Usually just sticks to weed, alcohol, crack, shrooms, and the occasional LSD
Bath salts fucked him up majorly and he will never do them again.
He works for trender, who has a whole ass company (will be touched on later)
He helps trender make clothes for more alt styles (punk, grunge, goth, emo, all that good stuff) and he helps with lingerie (masc and fem. trender makes both. Offender tests it out and gives feedback on what could be added or changed)
He also finds models for Trender (there’s really no qualifications to be a model, you kinda just have to want to be one. Trender, his assistants, and other models will help fill new models in. And they never have to wear something they don’t want or pose a way that makes them uncomfortable. also theres do discrimination when it comes to models, any one of any race, body type, gender (or lack there of), sexuality, and age to an extent (depending on the clothes being modeled and (if parent permission is needed if they get it)) are welcome)
He also does side jobs like art (he does realistic art) plays piano or violin for songs, every so often he’ll join a strip club. Definitely has an OF.
He learned piano from his dad. Their dad made them all learn piano. His dad was very against him learning violin but his mother let him learn it (she knew how to play)
Their parents kept them pretty reserved from the rest of the world (particularly humans) for safety reasons. The brothers didn’t find out they were the only ones of their kind till they were like teens and went hunting for the first time.
Their parents suddenly disappeared when they were teens. They still haven’t found them and have no idea what happened to them.
Zalgo killed them cause the dad was constantly fighting him, so was the mom but less so.
There were originally 5 brothers, but one got murdered (It was Tenderman. Who wouldve been the oldest, then slender, offender and trender are twins, then splendor)
They don’t know how tender was murdered. All they know is they can be murdered. They still haven’t figured out how tho.
They do know that they can regenerate any part of their body (teeth and nails grow back almost instantly, limbs take longer, they can just put their head where it should be and the bone, muscle, skin, tissue and all that will pull back together, skin can either regenerate in about an hour or two or a couple days depending on the size of the wound. Their organs can regenerate but it takes like a month.)
Drugs don’t effect them the same way they do us. Our massive hangovers that put us out of commission is what happens after they do LSD. A regular hangover for us is what happens when they do coke or a drink shit ton of alcohol.
Offender has the highest tolerance, then it’s trender, splendor, and Slender has the lowest cause he hasn’t done drugs.
Splendor has tried them but doesn’t like doing them. He doesn’t drink much either.
Trender will do them every so often, usually with Offender. He either drinks or smokes a blunt usually. Shrooms are for special occasions, and LSD gives him major anxiety so he doesn’t do it.
Trender and Offender were the only ones to try bath salts. They don’t know what happened. Splendor says they disappeared for a month and murdered a shit ton of people. They almost got caught. And at some point Offender ate a whole ass headstone and took a chunk out of a mausoleum
Slender hunts whenever the hell he wants, he doesn’t care about being caught
Offender hunts every couple of months or so
Trender hunts about 2 times a year. He spreads out his food pretty evenly
Splendor hates hunting and usually Offender or Trender will do it for them. They’ll maybe hunt once a year.
Human food to them is like sweets to us. They can’t live off it but it’ll keep them from starving. If they don’t eat human for about 3-4 years they’ll start to starve, but the process is slow and would probably take a while to actually kill them
Trender, Splendor, and Offender try not to get caught or make suspicions rise. They just wanna live their lives.
The amount of people they consume and how long they stay in their human form determines their power levels.
Slender is the most powerful, then Splendor, Offender, and Trender is the least powerful (but they’re all still mega powerful)
Slender is never in his human form and consumes humans whenever he wants so he has nothing holding back his power
Splendor may not eat human much but they’re rarely ever in his human form. And if they are it’s not for more than an hour usually
Offender is in his human form about 50% of the time. He’s in his normal form at home or hunting and any other time he’s human so-
Trender is in his human form like 90% of the time since he spends most of his time at work (he’s a workaholic to the highest extent. When it becomes really bad is when Offender will step in and be like “hey let’s grab a drink and chill out”)
Offender and Slender’s relationship is like Raph and Leo’s from tmnt if their relationship was genuine hatred and violent
Splendor tries to med their relationship and makes times where they all hang out and have dinner together but to no avail
This is the only time Slender can be seen in his human form. He doesn’t want to go but for some reason he does
Slender is stuck in his ways
Their dad hated humans with a passion, and Slender looked up to their father and wanted to be exactly like him so the hatred rubbed off
Slender blames humans for his parents disappearing and Tender’s death. Tender was the brother he bonded with the most
Splendor used to be a really emotional kid and their father hated that so now they bottle up everything
Their mother tried to help as best she could
V support
Trender’s company is a fashion company that produces just about everything
And the sizes go up to 4 or 5 x
And the prices are reasonable and don’t go up with the size
Trender really doesn’t give to shits about money. If he could he’d just give everything he makes away but unfortunately he needs some money to produce what he makes.
He makes kids clothing, teens clothing, adults clothing in every aesthetic you can think of. Rarely will you see basic shit from him
He makes jewelry (real and fake (for the kiddies) and specifies very obviously which is which so someone doesn’t accidentally buy the wrong one)
He makes shoes!
His prices are usually around 10-25 dollars for clothing, sometimes 30 if it’s a specific brand (like Gorillaz or something. He doesn’t work with brands like Victoria secret, brands that have sweat shops, things like that. He doesn’t support them whatsoever)
His business is huge but he always listens to the people and tries to improve. And all his products are made ethically. He tries in every way possible to produce good products without polluting the earth more
Splendor usually only hangs around babies-young adults. They help them through rough home lives, trauma, and helps them find joy. They do everything they can to make them feel better
Splendor is the one who takes care of Sally. And they feels incredibly guilty for not being able to stop what happened to her, or punish her uncle himself.
Animals and mystical creatures are drawn to them and their home. They go to it for shelter and safety, as well as some food. But because Splendor isn’t always there they have a nymph friend there to look after everything.
Slenderman is the only one with proxies
Splendor is demisexual and bi, leaning towards men
Trender is queer and demisexual/demiromantic
Slender doesn’t love anything. Ever.
Trender gets annoyed easily but rarely ever gets pissed pissed (like original face altering pissed) if he does it’s either cause someone did something to his brothers or his models. And the unfortunate soul who did such will never be seen again afterwards
Offender doesn’t really get pissed pissed cause he usually either bottles it up or makes a joke out of it. It’s really only if something happens to his brothers that he gets pissed pissed.
Splendor has a list of people they wish they could rip to shreds. All of them parents. But they don’t want to do that to the children. They only intervenes and gets pissed pissed when the abuse gets physical or sexual. When it’s physically they’ll give the parent one change to never do that again. They’ll scare the shit outta them but won’t hurt them. If it’s sexual they kill them. Plain and simple.
Splendor started wearing pokadots to make the kids happy. Trender hates the suit but doesn’t comment usually
Splendor’s black hands are a skin disease their species can have. The skin is black and kinda ridged.
Splendor wears gloves because of their skin disease. the blood stains and they can’t get it out. Also they’re very insecure about their disease
Splendor put the bells on their tendrils so their movements didn’t scare the kids. They would always know when he was moving and where he was moving to so they’d be more comfortable. It was painful but it was worth it
Slender was in the woods when he was younger and almost got attacked by humans, but his mother came and saved him. (Her tendrils could be used as a shield)
Eden is not related to the brothers.
But eden looks a lot like their mother, so much so that Spendor legitimately mistakes her for their mother.
Slender’s human name is John (splendor had to come up with it on the spot leave them be)
Offender’s human name is Dimitri and I’ll die on this hill
Splendor’s human name is Faer
Trender’s human name is Quael
They can change their physical appearance to be fem or masc. like their body can change.
Slender doesn’t give two shits about pronouns
Offender doesn’t care but he/they/xem works
Trender goes by he/him
Splendor goes by they/them
(Im including Slenderwoman now so uh... 🤷)
Her hair is her tendrils.
She’s not part of the Slender bro family nor does she know they exist (though eventually she will. She’s way younger than them so)
✨Lesbian✨
Has met Slenderman tho. She hates him
Like genuinely hates his guts
She hates almost sharing a name with him.
Prefers to go by her human name; Eden
As long as you don’t use the pronouns he/him she doesn’t care.
She just kinda... appeared at the ripe age of 4? (She doesn’t remember anything past 4 so that’s what if feels like to her.)
Splendor is a switch and you can’t change my mind
Trender is also a switch
Slender doesn’t get any cause he’d kill them, purposely or not, being radioactive and all.
Eden is a top but can bottom is convinced
Offender, Splendor, Trender, and Eden can all control their radiation output so they can glitch tech when they chose and won’t hurt anyone
Slender could but doesn’t want to 🤷
They can be killed by their hearts getting impaled. The reason they don’t know that is because the skin will heal, but the heart can’t.
Offenderman’s real name isn’t Offenderman. That name was dubbed to him when people believed the rumors of him. But he kept it. He can’t really explain why but he did. And now he forgets it’s not his real name sometimes. Though he does prefer to go by Offender/Smexy.
Splendor calls him Offendy and he’s the only one allowed to do so
Trended has four arms, plus his tendrils. He can hide his second pair of arms like his tendrils but it takes energy
Getting their limbs/tendrils cut off only stings to them. They’re only in full on pain when their organs are involved
Eden’s blood has healing properties.
Someone can be turned immortal by being injected with one of the brother’s (or Eden’s) blood in large amounts. It’s extremely painful though.
Doing it slowly can ease the pain, so doing it over a week’s time nonstop will get the job done.
The injected person will be very weak after it for a couple days. A week. 2 weeks in worse cases.
The only one who’s done this is Splendor. They were dating a guy for a very long time and they told him about the procedure and he wanted it. After gaining back his strength he left Splendor. They’re not entirely over this even though it happened a long time ago.
They (mainly Offender and Trender) had to track him down and kill him. (Ya know, heart stuff)
That’s when they figured that’s probably how they could get murdered
Hello! Can I ask headcanons about being Inarizaki manager?
A/N: Hi there and of course you can! You’re my first Haikyuu anon so I hope this lived up to your expectations! I also gave your request a little backstory so you’ll hopefully enjoy this! (´・ᴗ・ ` )
Tags: Inarizaki x reader ✅ SFW ✅ friendship ✅ fluff ✅
━━━━☆ ━━━━☆ ━━━━☆
bearing the title of Inarizaki’s manager was no easy task, in fact, it was pretty tiring and demanded a lot from the person who owned it
or at least that’s what a lot of the failed applicants claimed
it was no secret that the volleyball team organized a test period that lasted a week for each participant and rumor has it that no one has ever made it past day three
there were a lot of people from your class mostly girls that had tried their luck and were overly-confident that they’d be chosen, but right after being failed they never mentioned the volleyball club again
you on the other hand were genuinely interested in the manager position and after contemplating whether or not to apply, with the amount of support you got from your family, friends and teachers you finally found the courage to write your name on the waiting list
unfortunately for your nerves the applicants before you failed way too quickly and before you knew it, your turn had come
a young friendly-looking man with dark and spikey hair came to your classroom on a Monday morning to tell you all the details concerning the club activity later this afternoon
you listened to him attentively, trying to memorize every single detail he told you, but he must’ve noticed how nervous you were because he suddenly stopped mid-sentence
“I’m sorry, you must surely think I’m super rude for not introducing myself first before I bombarded you with all those information. My name’s Akagi and I’m Inarizaki’s libero, it’s a pleasure to meet you!”
now that you were more relaxed the two of you wrapped your chat up and bid each other goodbye before you returned to your classroom and waited for your first class to start
.
all those rumors about the team giving off an entirely different aura than anyone else in school was truly no exaggeration
the moment you entered the gym the prevalent tension alone was enough to make you rethink your plans, but before you could do anything a gentle voice spoke out to you
“Are you this week’s manager candidate?”
when you turned around to see who had asked you that question, you saw a tall young man with a darker skin tone smile down at you
you affirmed his question, introducing yourself with the same nervous tone from before, and fortunately, he as well showed you an equal amount of sympathy as Akagi
“I know that it must be quite overwhelming, but you really shouldn’t worry too much about it. You know I’m actually not supposed to give you any tips, but...out of everyone who walked in here you look the most promising so...just be yourself!”
and with that, the two of you walked towards the rest of his teammates so that you could finally introduce yourself to them
truth be told you expected some kind of long interrogation process and nosy questions, but they paid you good to no attention and just introduced themselves briefly
when they went back to practice their moves the captain stayed behind and asked you some general questions such as how much experience you have with volleyball and if you’re busy during the weekends
after everyone went to go and change, you stayed behind to help some of the substitute players out with cleaning the gym floors and dirty balls when Kita joined you with the cleanup
he must’ve noticed your surprised face since after just a short while he spoke up
“Please pay me no mind, I do these things quite often, so this won’t be the last time my actions will surprise you.”
“Do you do these things out of...obligation?”
the other club members were quite surprised by your sudden question, but it made the light-grey haired young man crack a smile as he told you that he was simply used to doing things the right and proper way
his remark seemed of low importance at that time, but his reasoning still stuck with you, and unbeknownst to you it helped you out quite a bit
.
the second day passed similar to the first one, but with the only exception that you were allowed to help out with the warming-up exercises
while everyone stretched you were finally able to get a better look at the members and you even took some notes on which exercise they did, which position they played in most frequently, and how they behaved towards their teammates
you used the moment they benched you to go over everything you learned today and needless to say there were a few very noticeable personalities that might need more time to befriend than Aran or Akagi
the first two that stood out were the Miya twins
everyone in school knew them for their constant fights amongst each other, but seeing them play and fight up close was an entirely different experience
they randomly screamed at each other when some tactic didn’t work out how they’d imagined it, but all things considered, they made a great and powerful duo
it also didn’t take you long to tell them apart look wise as well as characterwise which facilitated your notes about them
Suna was the third person you’d have to look out for and pay very close attention to
judging from his playstyle he was quite the troublesome opponent
according to some of the players who sat close to you, he was able to manipulate the blockers to jump right where he wanted them to and some of that manipulation skills even stayed with him beyond the game and made out a big part of his personality
but on a more positive note, he also had a more fun side to him
he noticed surprisingly quick if someone wasn’t in a good mood and depending on how long he’d known them he was also able to cheer them up, but this special service heavily relied on his current mood
as for the rest of the members, they seemed friendly enough and as time passed you were confident that they’d accept you in their circle of friends
.
..
the rest of the week passed by in a flash and before you knew it the last day of your “manager exam” had arrived
you were nervous as well as quite afraid that you might not have provided them with the service they needed or wished for, but the confident grins on Aran’s and Akagi’s faces managed to reassure your beating heart
everyone waited for Kita to arrive and with each passing minute you felt like you would pass out
and after what felt like an eternity he finally entered the gym with a black duffle bag and headed straight toward you
he handed you the bag without saying anything, it was after you had taken the small bundle into your hands that he spoke up, a small smile spreading across his facial features
“We’ve tested you throughout this entire week and I’m pretty sure not every single task we entrusted you with was pleasant, but you still held out and did everything the right and proper way...thank you and with this, I’d like to welcome you as Inarizaki’s first and official manager.“
it took you a short while to comprehend just what had happened and while you were still looking at the captain like a lost lamb the rest of the members surrounded and congratulated you
the person who brought you back from your daydream was Atsumu, who tightly wrapped his arms around you in a congratulatory hug
you were quite surprised since up until now he was rather well-behaved and didn’t concern himself so much with you except the usual ‘thank yous’, ‘hellos’ and ‘good evenings’ a club member would give his piers
your bewilderment must’ve been quite evident since someone pulled the blond giant away from you with a sigh
and that someone was no other than his twin brother Osamu who whispered a small apology to you and began to lecture him
“What’s it to ya ‘Samu? Ain’t it ‘bout time we dropped that whole act?”
before they could confuse you more than you already were, Ren placed his big hand on your shoulder giving you a somewhat awkward smile that was meant to console you
Hitoshi joined you two and explained how the team always had to show each candidate the cold shoulder in order to make sure that all applicants were aware of the fact that being the VBC’s manager didn’t mean partying around and chatting up a storm with the members
I see was all you could answer to that rather absurd rule they had come up with
.
..
your first day as the official manager didn’t vary that much from what you had seen during your test week, but at least now you were properly talking with all of the members
needless to say, you also became this day’s conversation topic number one
wherever you walked people would whisper amongst each other how you were the chosen one despite so many applicants
some of your classmates though had the audacity to doubt that you had won the guys over in a legitimate way and made no effort to hide their baseless accusations by speaking unnaturally loud when they were near you
it did bother you a little, but you decided to ignore their envious attempts to get you mad, sad, or whatever their goal was and dedicate yourself to getting to know your club members better...
.
the first few weeks you spent on getting to know the members’ skills as well as their personalities better than what you had seen already in the past week
and before you knew it, you had become not only an essential and precious part of the team but also an irreplaceable friend and companion to each of them
you made sure to help the two captains out as much as you could, but you didn’t only do it out of obligation but because you felt bad for leaving these two - especially Kita - alone with all important tasks
oddly enough a powerful team like theirs didn’t have an advisor so most organizational tasks fell on their shoulders
Kita as dutiful and thorough as he was always tackled the tasks the moment they were given to him so neither Aran nor you ever had the chance to volunteer as helpers
one day though you accepted the assignments before him and distributed them amongst the three of you as equally as you could, whereas you took on a slightly bigger portion since you were their manager
you also made sure that Kita didn’t stay behind until all the streetlights turned on and so it became a tradition for you to join him and Aran on their way back home
during those walks, you got extremely close with them and since they often discussed training and club-related matters, you were also able to learn additional things as well as plan the players’ training regimen for the following days
when you weren’t by their side, you either warmed the bench alongside the other substitute players or tried to help Hitoshi tame the two brothers
you were aware of their regular disputes and had already witnessed one yourself, but back then the team had helped resolve it so you weren’t needed
and now that they had finally found a manager, they reverted back to their habitual behavior: ignore and enjoy their dispute, film it or just look for Kita to resolve the issue
you on the other hand took it upon yourself to play the mediator and started by stopping Suna from recording or taking a photo of them
needless to say, he wasn’t very happy when you confiscated his phone, but after you explained to him that you were simply worried that as heated as the siblings were they’d one day drag him into their fight, he proposed you a deal
“Let me take at least five photos and two videos before I help with calming them down.“
your eyes narrowed as you took on a very confident pose which made it pretty obvious that you weren’t going to back down from his attempt to bargain with you
“Two photos and one video.“
“Make it three.”
“Denied. You either settle for two photos and one video or nothing at all...take it or leave it Suna.”
as much as he wanted to protest, your smug grin made him yield in the end
next up were the taller and more intimidating-looking players who’d usually stand by and laugh or sigh
“Are you really ok with the whole school making fun of our club and treating it like some kind of fighting club just because of these two dunces?”
they were quite surprised at your sudden question but weren’t as taken aback as you when they immediately headed for the gym doors to shoo away all onlookers
as for the troublesome siblings you usually stood between them the moment you sensed that they were about to fight
they’d still try to somehow either pinch the other or slap his backside and you at first tolerated it, but after a while, it just got too distracting and annoying so you straight out took hold of each of their hands and wordlessly glared at them
that method started a new trend and now their teammates constantly teased them for being your children and how funny it was to look at their embarrassed faces while you on the other hand showed no reaction whatsoever
you didn’t expect that sort of outcome, but as long as it stopped their fighting it was worth it
.
as their manager, you were also put in charge of organizing training matches as well as signing them up for tournaments and nationals (with the help of the coaches and captains of course)
your first training match was quite exciting and you were surprised at the number of people that came to see it
the guys were almost always in their top form when they played so you rarely had to worry about their health condition and that took quite the weight from your shoulders
even if someone showed the slightest symptoms of a cold or anything of that sorts, Kita and you would instantly be there and get the player to go home and rest
you knew that some of them hated being sick since it meant that they’d miss out on practice and saw it as some kind of betrayal towards the team
Atsumu was one of these types of people and he was the heaviest case out of all of them
so you made sure to drop by the twins’ house after club activities ended and cheer him up, by changing the cloth on his forehead, cutting some apples for him, or just being there to keep him company
after that Osamu would always insist on bringing you home since the sun had already set
the two of you would always talk about the most random things, but sometimes your conversations got quite serious and personal
in fact, you were the first person he shared his future plans with, saying that he could trust you with keeping it a secret
as for the nationals...
your first one was very overwhelming
the gym was so enormous that it outshined any other gym you had visited with them
it was no secret that the entire ambiance intimidated you and the moment you saw their personal cheering squad you couldn’t help but freeze-up
you had heard that their cheering squad was like no other and that it even rivaled that of many other powerhouse schools, but much like other rumors you had dismissed it
...until now
“Impressive isn’t it?” Ren asked to which you just nodded
but you noticed quickly just how much of an effect their audience had during the match
their steady and powerful rhythms managed to not only motive your team but also discompose your opponents
what surprised you the most was how the older gentlemen in the crowd didn’t hold back on their snide remarks when someone made a mistake or didn’t play seriously
after each match, all of you had come up with small rituals you’d do
depending on the outcome of the game you’d either throw a small party to commemorate their victory or try to cheer them up with a motivational speech followed by a movie night
all in all, you truly came to love volleyball, as well as your team and each of its members, and they did too
they were truly happy to have won such a dependable and caring manager like yourself
the entire team always made sure to celebrate your birthday and go all out on your presents as well as on the party they’d organize for you
all of them always made sure to return your kindness with double the effort and love you had given them
you were sick?
no problem, every day two members would visit you and take turns in taking care of your needs until you were healthy
you were sad?
they’d buy you your favorite snacks, cook you your favorite meal, rent your favorite movie and then knock on your front door, demanding to be let in
...and so on
they had become something like your second family and you didn’t even dare imagine a scenario where you didn’t apply for the position of the manager
the same goes for them, they had given up the hope to find someone who manages their team, but the moment you had entered the gym they almost instantly knew that you’d be the one to take them to victory
and they were right...
Some Semblance of a Man
Kaz
Kaz Brekker was always looking for a challenge, for the next rival to ruin, for the next near death experience. He’d learned quickly that sitting idle in The Barrel got you killed and he’d been running ever since. But with Pekka gone, Inej and her parents reunited, and the Council of Tides temporarily abated, Kaz was beginning to realize there was nothing else for him to do but wait.
Of course, there were the day to day activities, he still had The Crow Club to run, he still had slavers to gather information on. But after everything he and the Dregs had been through recently, those tasks seemed trivial. He didn’t want his crew to think that just because he’d come into a bit of money that he had gone soft, and he didn’t want rumor spreading throughout the Barrel that Kaz Brekker was getting bored. Without his crew around the Slat, Kaz had to find other ways to pass the time, and for the sake of maintaining appearances, Kaz would walk the streets at night, pretending to look at his watch, pretending to trail a random person, or spreading rumors. Sometimes he would walk to The Menagerie and think of what it would look like burned to the ground.
That’s where he’d been tonight, with a gentle mist of rain turning the cobblestone to mirrors, pools of colored lights spilling out across the street. There were few people out, the rain enough of a nuisance to make them think twice about spending their coin in gambling halls and pleasure houses. Despite the hour growing ever later, the Slat was teaming with life when Kaz returned, the air smelled like alcohol and sweat, the newer additions to the crew were trying to have a conversation, which had mostly devolved into shouting over the out of tune cacophony of voices singing drunkenly across the bar. Kaz bought a round for everyone, though he knew the chance of anyone here betraying him in favor of another gang was slim, keeping his crew happy with a bit of booze usually made his job a little easier. Besides, the longer the crowd was down here, the longer he had for some quiet of his own, in his room on the fourth floor, where the voices did not carry.
Kaz held his breath as he started his climb up the stairs, it was never easy, but Kaz valued the privacy and protection afforded by his room more than he worried about the pain. He bolted the door behind him, leaning his head against its frame and biting his lip as he massaged the twitching muscle of his thigh. He stretched, rubbed a knot from his neck, and reached for his hat.
He paused, the pattering of raindrops puncturing the peace. “Won’t Jesper and Wylan be missing their Wraith?” Kaz asked his empty room, his back to the window, hiding his smirk. He moved slowly, hanging his hat on the doorknob and turning around just in time to watch Inej swing gracefully from the rafters of his ceiling and drop down to his bed.
“No, they’re going over the books tonight, so they’ll be busy for a few hours at least,”
“Wylan’s books take hours to go over?” Kaz asked, leaning against the wall to take the weight off his bad leg.
“No,” Inej replied “But the boys tend to get distracted by...paperwork and usually have to start over,”
It took Kaz longer than he’d ever admit to understand her meaning, but once he had he merely quirked a single, bemused eyebrow at her. Something hungry and desperate twisted its way through Kaz’s stomach when Inej smiled wryly back at him, her eyes flitting to his collar. “What business?”
“I’ve been reading up on cannons.” Inej began, her face a picture of concentration. “Specht and I are going to be taking a few people we’ve been eyeing for our crew out on the water sometime in the next few weeks to practice. We aren’t going far, just far enough to where the cannon fodder won’t send other ships into a panic. We want to see if they can work well as a team before we commit to hiring them.”
“A wise decision,” Kaz agreed, ignoring the way his heart seized within his chest. It made him happy she would have her freedom, but the thought of losing her to the sea always left an ache.
“I wanted to extend an invitation to you,” the confidence Kaz had grown so used to seeing in Inej’s shoulders melted away, she pulled out a knife, turning it over in her hand. “to join us on that trip. I thought you might want to be there to ensure your...investment is taking form the way you’d hoped it would,”
“It wasn’t an in-” Kaz swallowed the rest of the sentence. It wasn’t an investment. He thought, don’t you know this was all for you? “How long will you be gone?”
“Not long, a day, maybe two.”
“When you have the dates secured, let me know, I’ll see if I can make the time,” He knew already he would make the time.
Inej nodded, a glint of something in her eye “And you? What business?”
“I have a job for you,” Kaz took this as an excuse to get closer to Inej, moving toward his desk and stretching out his leg. “I recently came into the possession of some ledgers,”
“You can use the word ‘stole’ Kaz, I’m not the stadwatch ,”
“They have the names of all the ships that have docked in the harbor, the captain, and their cargo,” Kaz continued, “I was looking through it for leads on slavers when I noticed something,” Inej untangled her limbs, and pushed herself upward, walking over to Kaz’s desk. Kaz had forgotten how comfortable it felt to have her by his side. “There’s a ship that keeps appearing, but it never stays for long. It docks at last light, and it departs first thing in the morning. I’ve looked at the dates of it’s arrival,” Kaz handed Inej the first of the ledgers, she took it from him without a word, scanning the pages in search of the same patterns he had found.
“The Sankta ?” Inej hissed and Kaz could hear the disgust on her tongue.
“I thought that might catch your eye,” he opened another ledger, pointing to the name of the ship and the dates it had docked in Ketterdam. “It comes in every six months or so, and when it does the population in the Barrel always seems to increase. The clubs start advertising more heavily, the pleasure houses start getting more traffic,”
“You think they’re smuggling people into the city?”
“I don’t know for certain what they’re trading, the ledger has different cargo listed every time. And the Captain...I’ve never heard of them before.” Inej placed the ledger in her hand back down on the desk, leaning in closer. Her braid fell down across her shoulder, barely an inch from Kaz’ face. Focus . “If the pattern holds they should be docking here in-”
“Three days?” Inej finished for him, reaching for the second ledger. Her fingers brushed against his gloves, her forearm against his jacket. Kaz lost all sense of time and place, despite the warmth of the room and the floor beneath his feet. One second he was in the Slat and the next he was cold and drowning. Inej was saying something, something like “tell him”, maybe? But he wasn’t quite sure, there was cotton in his ears, his heart was in his throat. There was water rising around his ankles.
“Kaz?” He heard her voice, far off, like a siren calling him to shore. He did not trust himself to speak, as it was he struggled to find breath “Kaz!”
He slammed back into himself, pressing one hand flat against his desk, wrapping the other around the head of his cane so tightly his knuckles went white beneath his gloves. Solid wood and solid metal, no flesh or water in sight, this was always how it went. The place beside him where Inej had been was empty, she had retreated, pressed herself up against the wall, her hands behind her back.
“I’m sorry, I-,” Kaz would have done anything to wipe away her guilt. “I wasn’t paying attention. I didn’t mean to-”
“I wasn’t prepared,” he said, unable to look her in the eye, to admit to the weakness they both knew that he carried.
“I know,”
“I didn’t expect-”
“I know,” Inej interrupted. “Does the Sankta change the Berth it docks on?”
“No,” Kaz would never have the words to express the gratitude he felt at her diversion. He turned slightly in his seat, pretending to study the documents in front of him. Pretending like every cell in his body wasn’t honed in on Inej. On the way she was looking at him, distracting him once again with talk of plots and schemes, intangible actions that would let him fly high above the harbor he was drowning in. “It uses the same Berth every time.”
“Do we know who that dock belongs to?”
“It’s paid for by the Council, it’s designated for public use,”
“I’ll see what information I can gather,” Inej said and Kaz nodded, trying to force the image of Jordie out of his head. “Goodnight, Kaz,” Inej whispered after a moment, and though he did not hear her footsteps, he felt her absence immediately.
Where the water had been, regret replaced it. He balled his hand into a fist and closed his eyes. “Wait!” he called out after her, turning around slowly to not seem overeager. Inej was frozen, partway out his window. He felt picked apart with the way her gaze fell upon him, her eyebrows knit together, her face desperate and searching. Whatever unease still lingered in the center of his stomach, whatever terror still wrapped around his ankles, it fell away at the sight of Inej, sitting here on his window sill, backlit by moonlight and held up by hope.
At some point the fear of what her touch would bring him was dampened by his need to hold her close. He was broken and crooked and the most unworthy man, but he needed Inej to know it wasn’t her fault. Wanted her to know that he was trying to push the pieces of himself back together, into someone, something she would not be ashamed to love.
When Kaz and Nina had broken into the morgue all those months ago, he had powered through his fear with thoughts of Inej; the warmth of her skin, the sound of her voice. But as every second in that room of corpses passed them by, Kaz had forced Inej from his mind, not wanting to taint his memories of her with the scent of death. Kaz had believed for so long that the foolish little boy he had been had died in the harbor, but as his eyes fell upon Inej now, he knew he had been wrong. He had carried Kaz Rietveld with him every day of his life, and had pulled that doe eyed little fool to the surface on the back of his brother’s bloated body with every touch since then.
He’d learned very quickly what it meant to be weak in The Barrel. The Barrel starved, and beat, and stole all the kindness and compassion and love out of those unlucky enough to build a life inside it. Weakness got you killed, so Kaz had buried his weaknesses so deep they had turned themselves into shadows. He had kept them there in the dark for so long they had grown claws and teeth, they had become so rabid, so feral that Kaz was finding it harder and harder to keep them locked away.
But maybe he didn’t have to anymore. Because now he had the Wraith, he had Inej, and Inej made him strong. Inej made him wish for things he had convinced himself he could never have. Perhaps if he tried it, if he tried it enough, to touch her, to put her hand in his, to let her rest her head against his shoulder, to...to kiss her, he could finally put the little boy in the harbor to rest. Yes, he would drown his fear beneath the tidal wave that was Inej, he would burn away the memories of corpses against his flesh with the warmth of her skin against his.
“I want to try again,” it pained him to admit to it, it thrilled him to have said it. Kaz failed to keep his heart beat steady when Inej planted her feet firmly back into his room, and closed the window.
“Try what again?” she asked, stalking forward until there was nothing more than breath between them. Kaz studied the head of his cane, his skin prickled with the thought of what she’d feel like in his hands.
“I-” He dared a glance at her, she was ethereal, she was calculating, she was Inej and the rest of Kaz’s wish was lost with his nerve.
“Kaz, tell me,” Inej leaned forward, Kaz leaned back. He clenched his jaw, locked himself away behind his mask. “Tell me what you want,” He could feel the way she looked at him, like she’d created her own gravity and he’d collapsed beneath it. But he couldn’t make himself form words, it had taken everything he’d had to say something the first time, to show her such weakness again would surely break him. When Inej spoke there was an edge to her voice that was sharper than her knives. “Say it, Kaz. For once in your life just...say what you’re thinking. There is no one else here but us. There’s no one else to see you, to hear you treat me like you actually care.”
Kaz hung his head in shame, it was a fair blow, but that didn’t stop him from shattering into a million pieces at the acknowledgement of all the times he’d failed her. “I want to take my armor off.” He forced himself to meet her eye. “I want to beat this, I will beat this. Will you help me?”
They’d done this little dance for months now, the day on the docks, when he’d shown Inej her ship, he’d managed to hold her hand for a whole five minutes without sinking below the waves. He’d tried a couple times since then, with various levels of success. Some days he’d managed to throw his arm around her, others just the thought of her face caused him to tug on his gloves.
“Of course I’ll help you, Kaz, you only had to ask,” Kaz committed that smile of hers to memory. “Are you ready?” Inej asked.
No. Kaz steadied himself and straightened his posture “Yes,”
They started slowly, Inej resting her palm on the back of his gloved hand, Kaz took a deep breath, he could do this, he was fine. Inej’s fingers curled around his hand, she pressed their palms together. Kaz pushed the water away. She laced their fingers together, he gave her hand a gentle squeeze.
“You okay?”
“Fine,”
“Do you want to keep going?”
“Yes,”
Kaz wasn’t sure what kind of sound he made when Inej began to tug the gloves from his hands. She froze, looking up at him, reading him the way only she could. She dropped her hand, Kaz wanted to reach for it, but he let it fall away. “I’m sorry, did you want to do it?”
“No, it’s- no one else ever has,” Kaz cleared his throat, biting back a smile at the way Inej’s cheeks flushed. Tentatively, Inej continued, it took a lifetime to complete her task, it took a second. The metal of his cane was cold against his fingertips, for the first time in a long time it no longer felt comforting. He reached out with his other hand, and gently Inej took it, her palm against the top of his bare hand. It felt like fire, but Kaz preferred the burn to the icy harbor he had always known. His breath caught in his throat, Inej continued until their hands were pressed palm to palm.
“Breathe,” Inej whispered, Kaz exhaled and peace rushed in to fill his lungs. She interlaced their fingers, the water started in. Think of her . Kaz clenched his jaw. Think of that day at the docks . Kaz faltered when Inej wrapped her other hand around his wrist, the one that held his cane. He thought that she might pull their hands away, and though he was not a man of faith, he thanked every Saint he knew that she kept her hold on him.
She repeated the pattern, gripping his wrist, his elbow, his shoulder with all his layers on. He kept his breathing purposeful, controlled, his eyes trained on the wall for fear he would look at Inej and see a corpse standing in her place. She slid her hand from his shoulder to his chest, he hoped she could not feel his heartbeat. He nearly lost his footing when her arm went to his waist. He was impossibly warm, sweat had started beading at his temples, he gripped his cane a little tighter.
Inej released his hand and a weight Kaz hadn’t realized was upon him disintegrated in his chest. But it returned in a flash when Inej began to pull off his coat. “Saints,” he whispered. “Why won’t it stop ?” he hadn’t meant to say it, he hadn’t meant for it to send Inej shuffling backward, too far away for him to grasp.
“It takes time, Kaz,” Inej replied, tossing his coat on the bed, taking a tentative step forward, then another when Kaz responded in kind. She brushed her fingers against his shirt sleeve at the wrist, it was an apology and a question. “You can’t kill this kind of monster in a day,” she traced a line up to his elbow. “It took me months,” Inej said, so simply that it knocked his world out of alignment and he had to take a step backward to right himself. Inej reacted on instinct, clutched his shoulders to make sure he did not fall.
“I’m not strong enough,” Kaz blurted out, hoping that if he spoke, he could force the feeling of rotting flesh out of his mind. “I’m not as strong as you,”
“That’s not true,” Inej ran her fingers across his chest and down to his waist. “My weakness just wasn’t visible, yours is,” she unbuttoned his vest, Kaz hadn’t even noticed and the implication of that made his stomach do a somersault. “When someone touches you, you are present, aware.” She continued her pattern, hands going back to his wrist, making sure he could anticipate where her next move was going to be. “Me? I disappeared,” Kaz caught her eye, and threw his thought away. He refused to pity her, he knew she wouldn’t want that. “I looked calm and collected, but no one knew what it was doing to me, to shake their hand or have their arms around me,”
She smiled at him, unrestrained and brilliant, and he looked down to realize he had his hand upon her waist, her arms wrapped around his in kind. This felt like a victory, it felt like a curse. Against the roughness of her jacket, his hand began to tremble. She stepped away, he didn’t want her to, but it was exactly what he needed.
“Your tie,” Inej stated, and Kaz could have worshipped her right then, for understanding that if she had brought her hand up to his neck, he might not survive the evening. He undid his tie, though the tightness in his throat did not relent. He unbuttoned his shirt, hoping that the action would steady his hand. He was feeling light-headed but he wasn’t drowning...yet. He wiped the sweat from his brow, ran a hand through his hair, forced his anxiety out with a breath. He had never gotten this far with her before.
Inej repeated the rhythm: wrist, elbow, shoulders. Her hand was Jordie’s hand, her flesh was Jordie’s flesh. His chest, his waist. The waters started rising, coming in with the strength of a flood. Inej could sense the change in him immediately, “Tell me about the tattoo,” Inej said, he did not want her hand on him anymore, he needed it to stay so he could keep trying. He knew why she was asking, she knew he needed a distraction, and he chuckled darkly because she did not know that this particular question serveed an opposite purpose.
“Not tonight,” But someday .
“Do you want me to stop?”
“No,”
Her hand has been in his for seconds, minutes, days, long enough that Kaz let himself hope that one day he could be rid of this. This ghost of his brother, the phantom of his skin, slipping underneath his hand, his chest, his face. Carefully, never breaking eye contact, Inej brought his hand up to her lips, Kaz focused on his breathing, on the moonlight spilling across Inej’s plait. Kaz tasted salt on his tongue, no not salt, iron. His vision went blurry, and he lost the shape of Inej as a result. This was unbearable, but he was desperate for more, it was easier this way. Feeling her lips against his skin, instead of her skin beneath his lips. She pressed another kiss to the creases of his palm, to his wrist. This felt nothing like a corpse, but the traces of her lips burned like ice, like water.
“I never asked you,” Kaz began, relaxing the tension in his jaw “Are you okay with this?”
“I’m not doing anything I don’t want to be doing,” she whispered against his forearm, lips brushing the dark ink of his Dregs tattoo. He flexed the hand that held his cane, releasing some of the stiffness in his knuckles. She continued her familiar path across his body, through the smoke of Reaper’s Barge Kaz noticed she took care to avoid the R tattooed to his bicep when she kissed him there.
His whole body was alight, electrified, dying. He could smell death in his nose, he could feel the warmth of Inej’s body wash over him. He was tired, he was treading water, knowing any minute he could drown. He saw Jordie’s face, swollen, purple, eyes cloudy, No. He thought of Inej, of her laughter, her smile, of her voice whispering his name. Kaz Rietveld and Kaz Brekker were at war with one another, and right now, he wasn’t sure who would win. He should tell her to stop, but he didn’t want her to.
Inej took another step in, her hands balling into fists. I’m not doing anything I don’t want to be doing . She had just told him that, but he saw her now, saw how tightly she carried herself. He’d been so caught up in his own head, he hadn’t realized she’d been trying to shed her armor too. She leaned in, and Kaz was back in a hotel bathroom, she paused mere inches from his chest, sucked in one shaking breath, and ran her lips against his collar bone.
The current pulled him under; Kaz Rietveld had won again. Sudden, uncontrollable panic seized within his chest, snapping the leash to which he tied his weaknesses. They ran him over, all snarls and teeth and claws, turning him into something wild and furious. Before he could control himself, before he was even fully conscious of what was happening, he had flung his arms outward, pushing Inej away from him. “Stop,”
Inej, working to quiet her own demons had not been expecting this outburst from Kaz, she lost her footing, stumbling backward, and though she did not fall, Ghafa’s never fall , she did slam the back of her knee into the hard metal of Kaz’s bed frame. Inej cried out, more out of shock than out of pain. Desperation, horror, fury, regret pulled Kaz further under, the room was spinning, the moonlight hurt his eyes. Kaz caught himself on the edge of his desk, fumbling frantically for the waste basket he kept there, the cold metal of it in his hands bringing the briefest moment of comfort before he was vomiting up his dinner.
“Kaz?” Inej’s voice was sturdy, grounding, calm, but he could not turn to face her.
Inej
Kaz Brekker had gone by many names, and Inej had heard them all, whispered fearfully through the streets of Ketterdam by cowardly men. Kaz Brekker, Dirtyhands, the Bastard of the Barrel. Inej had spent so many nights on this city’s rooftops, seen only by the stars, listening in on the conversations that twisted up to her like crow feathers in the wind. She knew what people thought of him, he held a place amongst the most dangerous and feared of men. To some he was a bogeyman, to all he was a threat. And though she had seen him do terrible, violent things it still sent a sharp bolt of surprise crackling through her body whenever she heard the word “monster” following his name.
That monster stood before her now, leaning against his desk. Trusting her enough to turn away, to leave himself defenseless in her presence. Not trusting her enough to show his face. He was sweating, and in the light that spilled from the lamp upon his desk, Inej could see his hands twitching with the slightest tremor. She knew he was slipping, knew he was trying desperately to pull his armor on. But she was not here for Dirtyhands, and she had no time tonight for bastards. She thought about those names, the truths they carried with them. Could they really be titles for the man she was watching now? A boy who could not look her in the eye? No, the person that stood, half naked and shaking in this tiny little room, was neither of those things. This, she realized, this was simply
“Kaz,” she tried again.
“Leave,” and if she had known him any less she would have thought that he was serious.
“No,”
“Inej,” She was never sure how he could do that, how he could make her feel coveted and worshipped just by saying her name “ please ?” and his voice became a quiet, broken thing.
“No.” She said again, gentle as the breeze “I will not leave you, not like this,”
“I don’t want to see you,” it wasn’t a lie,
“You did great, Kaz, you’re making progress, ” and so was she, though she wasn’t sure Kaz realized it.
“Inej, get out,” he hissed, as if it hurt him to say the words.
“Why?”
He stiffened, and she bit back a smirk he hadn’t been expecting that . “I-” he hung his head.
She knew he didn’t have a reason, not one that he would admit to anyway “Is it because you don’t want me to see you like this? Because you’re worried you can’t give me what I want?” She tried to dampen the delight that bubbled in her chest, when she watched blotches of red blush paint the back of Kaz’s neck and spill down across his shoulder blades. “Is it because you feel ashamed?”
Kaz screamed with a rage she had seen up close only twice, a wild, guttural thing. When he got like this, destruction usually followed in his wake. As if on cue, Kaz slammed his hands down on the table, sweeping everything that rested there- every half drawn blueprint, ledger, and plan -onto the floor. His lantern tumbled with it as did a small wind up dog toy Kaz always kept sitting at his desk. The force of their impact caused both to shatter, sending pieces of glass and metal skidding across the hard wood floors. The paperwork took longer to fall, floating gently in the air around him like snow.
Kaz finally turned to face her, fury exploding behind his eyes. He wanted a fight, but Inej would never give him that satisfaction. When the dust settled, the anger that had possessed him had begun to burn low, confusion taking control of his posture and his brow when he finally saw Inej.
She had crossed her arms and tried her best to look bored. Based on his reaction it may have been working. “You can’t scare me away, Kaz,” It was the wrong thing to say, but it’s what he needed to hear.
The fire that flickered behind his eyes turned to ice, “I am the Bastard of the Barrel,” Kaz spit, stalking toward her, making sure to punctuate his words with the tapping of his cane against the wood. “I brought down Pekka Rollins, I conned Jan Van Eck, I broke into the Ice Court and made it out alive. Men run when they see me coming, parents tell their children I’ll steal them away in the night if they do not behave.” Kaz only stopped when her back was to a wall. He wanted her to feel cornered, he wanted her to feel trapped. On any other night, that may have worked, but she knew this was an act, and she had maneuvered herself so she was near the window, and he hadn’t seemed to notice. “I scare who I damn well please,”
Inej could not hold back anymore, she hadn’t meant to do it, but she started to laugh. “That’s good,” Kaz blinked in surprise, his posture shifting, his grip loosening on his cane. She took a step forward, he took a step back. “I can see how that would work on most people. But I know you Kaz. Sure, you took down Pekka and Jan Van Eck...with help,” she took another step forward, reveling in Kaz’s retreat. “But you’ve also fainted in a carriage, nearly drowned in Djel’s river, and got embarrassed when Jesper’s Dad caught you two in a fist fight.” Kaz ducked his head to hide the redness rushing to his cheeks. She took another step forward, he ceded his territory. “You got good at palming cards and picking pockets not because you planned for a life of crime, but because you like magic tricks . You’ve lost a hat in every corner of Ketterdam,” Kaz lost his footing, his knees buckled beneath him, sending him tumbling onto his bed. With nowhere left for him to go, Inej smirked, and leaned in just far enough so he could hear her whisper. “And, when you wake up in the morning, your hair sticks up to one side. Jesper and I pretend not to notice, but we both think it’s adorable,”
Inej spun gracefully on her heel, gliding back towards the window, because she was not cruel and did not want Kaz to suffer...she didn’t want Kaz to suffer much . Kaz glowered at her, but seemed to otherwise have calmed. “You know,” Inej said when the silence grew too heavy. “I’ve been afraid of a lot of people since I came to Ketterdam,”
“Even Jesper?” Kaz asked eventually, she could tell from the cadence of his voice he was exhausted.
“Especially Jesper” Inej trusted Jesper with her life, he had brought so much chaos and joy into her world. But he was kind and charming in a way that sent shivers down her spine. Inej had had too many clients come to her, all smiles and compassion. Jesper scared her because she knew what kind and charming men could do. Kaz flinched and looked away.
“But not me?”
“No,” Inej wanted to touch his cheek, to smooth the worry that lined his forehead “Never you,”
Slowly, deliberately, Kaz stood. Inej’s breath caught in her throat when her eyes met his. He looked paler than usual, and maybe a little green, but his hands were still, his stance was steadier. He had locked his thoughts away, no emotion showing on his face, but there was a shine in his eyes Inej had seen before, when Kaz was trying to let go of hope. He quirked a single eyebrow at her, a challenge.
“I’ve been scared for you,” she admitted. “I’ve been scared to disappoint you, I’ve been scared of what it would do to me to lose you.” Inej stepped forward, already knowing what would happen, knowing that Kaz, having slipped away once already, would take a step back. But instead he stood rooted in place, his grip tightening ever so slightly on his cane.
“Why?”
“Because you’ve never looked at me the way everyone else does.” She considered the weight of the words on her tongue. “One day at The Menagare would have been enough to show me what kind of place Ketterdam truly was, and I spent a year inside it’s walls. I’ve collapsed beneath a million broken promises, but never yours. I’ve heard a million gentle lies, but never from you. I have felt a million….unwanted hands,” Inej wanted to shrink away into the shadows, but she refused to show her weakness, she refused to look away. Like magnets they were pulling toward each other until they were sharing the same air, until they were standing as each other’s equals in the center of the room. Inej held out her hand, not a demand, not a question, but a wish. Her heart threatened to burst out of her chest when Kaz, without a moment’s hesitation, took her hand. He clenched his jaw, and drew a soft line across her palm with his thumb, it was a certainty, it was a promise. “But never yours,”
Kaz cleared his throat “I haven’t been scared of anyone since Jordie died,”
“Not even Jesper?” Inej teased, because she didn’t know what else to say.
Kaz bit back a smile “Never Jesper,”
“Not even me?” It was another joke, because she’d wanted to see more of that smile.
His face fell into something powerful and serious “I’ve always been scared of you, Inej,” she knew how much it must have taken for him to have admitted it. “From the moment you snuck up on me with bells on,”
“Really?” she could not hold the joy she felt at bay, it spread throughout her body, warming her all the way down to her toes.
Kaz nodded.
“But I was nothing then,”
“You have always been something.” Kaz corrected. “Back then you were Silence,”
“And now?” her eyes kept falling to his lips.
“You…” Kaz continued, leaning down, sending Inej’s heart into a frenzy she was worried she could never tame “should be going home,”
Inej scoffed, Kaz’s walls slipped down just long enough to let a small chuckle pass his lips. She would tuck that away in her memory, a look into the boy he could have been, a minute of vulnerability all for her. “That’s not fair! I told you mine!” If it had been Jesper standing in front of her, Inej would have backhanded his shoulder. But this was Kaz and he had done a lot tonight, she didn’t want to push her luck. Especially when she was enjoying this feeling of his hand in hers, she wasn’t looking to ruin it. “Come on Kaz,” she whispered, “why are you scared of me?”
He chewed his lip, and she could see the gears turning in his head, the debate he was conducting. Should he tell her the truth? Or keep his feelings a mystery and send her away. She was getting tired of being sent away. “Because I trust you.” Kaz said. “Because, you make me want to tell you everything. We deal in secrets, Inej, because we know that information can be more valuable than money. You’ve learned my patterns, you know my mind, you could unravel everything I have built with a single word to the right person,”
It was true, but it hurt. She pulled her hand from his, and regretted it. “You think that I would?”
“No,” he said it so fast, so sure that it knocked the air out of her lungs, it tore her voice from her throat. “And that is why you scare me. Because I know that thought has never crossed your mind.” He tugged gently at the bottom of her braid, twisting it around in his fingers. This was a system they had worked out months ago, for when Kaz wanted to be physical but the feeling of her skin was too much. “You are kinder and stronger than I will ever be and I am scared that-” he dropped her braid, placed both his hands atop his cane, and broke eye contact. “I am scared that you will finally see yourself for everything you are and know I am not worthy of your time or loyalty.”
“Kaz,” she said, because she didn’t know what else to say. Because she couldn’t say I love you . The tension in the room, the cord that pulled the two of them together, was severed by the tolling of a clock.
Kaz broke first, eyes skirting to the city stretched out below them. “Goodnight, Inej,” he whispered, his voice rougher than usual.
“Goodnight,” she managed, slipping out of his window and vanishing into the night. Kaz watched her go until he could not feel her presence any longer, then he turned, and started picking up his mess. When Kaz woke the next morning, his heart stuttered in his chest. Sitting in the middle of his desk was a brand new wind up dog toy and laying next to it, reflecting the early morning sun was a geranium made out of glass.
A/N: it’s been 84 fucking years. And I’m finally back writing this. Also Nari and Seonghwa are in a established relationship in this chapter :)
Things between Nari and Seonghwa have been going smoothly. They’ve been talking to each other more and a relationship has started to spark between them. Nari has managed to even get into the Top 3, since Seonghwa isn’t making it very difficult for her. They even found a new secretary for him to replace Ms.Lee. But Nari is kind of supiscious of her.
Nari was finishing making herself a cup of coffee in the break room, when someone walked in.
“Do you mind making me some tea?” She looked up and saw Seonghwa with a reusable cup.
“Yeah sure” she said as she smiled and made more hot water. “So how are you liking your new assistant?”
“She’s not as fast with her tasks as Ms.Lee, but she gets them done on time at least” he sighed as he crossed his arms.
“Maybe she has to get used to this place first. It may be different from her different job. Give her a month or two and she’ll get the hang of it” she said as she grabbed a tea bag and poured the hot water into his reusable cup. “Anyways here’s your tea.”
“Thank you” he said as he grabbed the cup from her hands, their fingers grazing a little. They stared at each other and Seonghwa started leaning in closer and closer until she felt his breath on her lips, but someone walked in before he could get a chance to kiss her.
“I didn’t expect you two to be in here” Dani said as she walked by the coffee maker to make her a cup of coffee. She then raise en eyebrow at their flushed expressions. “Did I interrupt something?”
“No! I’ll see you around Mr.Park!” Nari said as she bowed at him and left the break room while sipping her coffee.
Seonghwa then bowed towards Dani and left the break room to go back to his office to finish some paperwork.
“There’s something off about them....” Dani said quietly as she looked at the two of them.
Nari was finishing the last of her report that was due this week. She was typing away with her headphones in and someone suddenly pulled them out.
“What the...” she trailed off and turned behind her and saw Yunho.
“After you finish your report, do you want to go get lunch together?” He asked and she nodded.
“Sure, I just need to finish this last sentence and I’m free to go.”
Nari pressed the ‘submit’ button on her report and then grabbed her bag. “Let’s go. I know this really good place we can go eat at.”
The two were now seated in front of each other with a plate of pizza in front of them.
“How’d you get off of Mr.Park’s bad side?” He asked curiously as he took a bite of his pizza.
“I don’t know. I got lucky I guess” she lied as she stared down at her plate.
“I heard this weird wacky rumor is that you guys are in a relationship” he said and that made her choke on her cola, which made him scared. “Are you okay Nari-ah?”
“Uhm...yeah” she said and took a bite out of her pizza. “Where exactly did you hear that?”
“From Dani. But you really can’t believe what she says without proof, so she’s pretty much telling a tale” he answered.
Nari then sighed in relief and looked up to her friend. “If something was going on between us, I’ll tell you first then Yunho.”
Yunho smiled and continued eating his food. Nari felt bad for lying to him, but it wasn’t a good time to tell him, especially since Dani is highly suspicious of them. She then shook out the thoughts from her head and went along eating with Yunho.
It was now 4 in the afternoon and Nari came home from work. The full paid internships will be announced next week and she was nervous. Even though she was dating Seonghwa, she still wants to prove that she can work better.
Nari heard a knock at her front door and went to open it. She turned the knob and there stood Seonghwa with a bag of ingredients.
“I remembered from a few days ago you were craving stirred udon, so I came to fix it for you” he said with a smile. He was changed out of his suit and now was wearing a white buttoned shirt tucked into some black pants. “Can I come in?”
Nari cleared the way of her front door and he went into the kitchen and put the bags on the counter. Nari sat on one of her bar stools as she watched Seonghwa rummage around her kitchen for a pot to boil water in.
“You need to invest in some cookware” he said as he found a pot to boil water in.
“I would but I burn water” she joked as he chuckled lightly as he put the pot on the stove.
“Since it’ll take a while for the water to bowl, how about we do something to pass the time?” He asked as he walked over towards her and biting his lip.
He grabbed her waist and leaned in. The kiss started out slow and gentle, and then it went to heated in a second. Nari wrapped her arms around his neck as he lifted her up on the island. His lips then went down towards her neck and leaving red marks along her neck. She whimpered as he found her sweet spot.
“Found it” he whispered as he went back to leaving marks on her. Nari’s hands traveled down towards his shirt and unbuttoned some of his buttons, as Seonghwa was in the process of trying to remove her pants.
Before he could successfully take of her pants, a knock interrupted them. They jumped at the knock and waited for the person to say something.
“Nari-ah! I have the notes you let me borrowed last week! Are you in there or are you sleep?”
It was Yunho. Nari quickly jumped off the counter and fixed her pants that Seonghwa almost took off.
“It’s Yunho! You have to hide!” She whispered as Seonghwa hurriedly buttoned back up his shirt. Nari pushed him in the closet in her living room, where she usually keeps her old coats and jackets and other things.
As she closed the door, she heard the code being entered and Yunho entering. “Were you sleep?”
Nari shook her head and then hid her neck after she saw it in the mirror in the living room. “I wasn’t sleep, I was just busy putting something in the closet.”
He put the notes down on her coffee table and walked towards her. “Why are you holding your neck? Did you strain it?”
“No. It just hurts from me overworking” she said. “You should go. We have exams and you should be studying really hard.”
“Yeah, but I’m also excited to see who gets the paid internships. I hope me and you get it” he said.
“Same” she agreed. Yunho bid a goodbye and closed the door. Nari looked out her window to make sure he was gone from view and then Seonghwa stepped out and looked over at the stove and the water was now boiling.
“Looks like it’s time for me to cook and after we finish eating, we can continue what we were doing before Yunho interrupted.”
It was now the week of the paid internships. People have been working hard over the weeks to get it, but Dani kept pushing the objective that Seonghwa and Nari are indeed dating, but people just called her crazy.
Hongjoong came by her desk and gave her a coffee. “I know about you and Seonghwa.”
Nari choked on her coffee and looked up at him with wide eyes. “H-how’d you know?”
“Did you forget we’re friends? He told me about it a few nights ago over a drink” he said. “Make sure to keep it a secret if you get the internship, the women here love to talk.”
Nari thanked him and continued to drink her coffee. Sunji and Dani came back from a meeting they were in and sat down at their desks.
“Sunji-ah, didn’t you see Seonghwa and Nari eating dinner together a few days ago?” Dani asked as she whispered towards Sunji. Sunji looked nervous as she looked over to Nari.
“Dani, I don’t know about this...” Sunji trailed off and then was cut by Dani saying something rude to her.
“Why is so crazy to find out stuff about me?” Nari asked as she bit her lip nervously.
Now it was 4 P.M. everyone huddled around Seonghwa to found out who got the paid internship. Nari held her hands nervously as he looked over the paper.
“You guys worked hard over the months, but like I said in the beginning, I’m choosing half of you. So if your name is called, you got the internship.”
“Choi San, Jeong Yunho, Kang Sunji, Moon Nari, and Lee Dowoon. Those 5 worked harder than anyone I’ve ever seen and it was only fair to choose them” he said.
Nari was happy that she was chosen. She looked over towards Dani who looked angrily.
“Yah! Mr.Park! How could you choose Nari over me? I worked harder than her in all the things. I did every task I was supposed to do!”
“If you call spreading rumors, talking bad about your other peers, plus my employees I hired. Then I guess that’s your definitions of tasks” he said as he crossed his arms. “My decisions are final.”
Nari smiled at Seonghwa and then Mr.Park and grabbed her things. When she was on the first floor of the office, she felt a shove behind her and an angry Dani.
“Did you really sleep with Mr.Park just so you could get the internship?” She asked angrily. “I never knew the Moon Nari is that kind of girl.”
“Dani just admit it. You’re just angry you couldn’t get what you want this time. And besides, you barely did any of the work, Sunji did your work” Nari said and walked out of the building.
“You’re going to regret saying that Nari.”
“You’ve done well these past months” Seonghwa said as he took a sip of his wine.
Nari had an identical glass and took a sip of hers as well. She was too distracted on what Dani said to her to even hear what Seonghwa was saying to her.
“Are you okay?” He asked as he caressed her cheek worriedly.
“Hmm. Yeah, just thinking about some things” she said.
“What were you thinking about?” He asked.
“Nothing. It’s just what Dani said to me.”
“What did she say?”
“Oh it wasn’t important. Just her talking nonsense.”
“How about I go run the two of us a nice, warm bath and fall asleep for the night. How does that sound?” He asked and she nodded.
“That sounds nice.”
Chapter Thirty-Six: How I Did It - By Jack The Ripper
Rated PG-13: For dark themes and language
Masterlist
~We'll never get free Lamb to the slaughter What you gon' do When there's blood in the water? The price of your greed Is your son and your daughter What you gon' do When there's blood in the water?
Beg me for mercy Admit you were toxic You poisoned me just for Another dollar in your pocket Now I am the violence I am the sickness Won't accept your silence Beg me for forgiveness~
"He's here."
Crossing the Event-Horizon
That's what that's called. I've always thought that's the most beautiful way of putting it. The words have a certain ring to them.
Crossing the Event-Horizon
It means crossing the point of no return. That itself - the point of no return - could mean a lot of things. It could mean the beginning. It could mean the end. It could mean the infinite. It could mean life. It could mean death. It could mean war, peace, happiness, sadness, or anything in between.
But it means one thing for sure.
Crossing the Event-Horizon means there's no going back.
If I had to identify a beginning to the end of my story, then I think that little red dot on the map of time is where I'd stick my proverbial pin. That one little sentence, those two little words.
Yes, it was that moment, I think.
That was when it all started to go wrong.
"Felix is here," I said quietly, "He's outside."
I didn't know what I was going to do to get my revenge from that point. All I knew was, in order to kill Felix, I would need to get to him. And that meant getting away from Jack. Getting away from the son of the devil is something certainly easier said than done.
I would have to do it in a manner which would compel him and the Winchesters to come 'save me'. Of course, I could just knock Jack out and ditch him, but then I would have no back-up if things with Felix went sour. Now, if there was one thing I had learned in the five years leading up to my presence in that lighthouse, it was redundancy. It never hurts to have a safety net. Mine just happened to be a Nephilim.
"You remembered to lock the door, right?" Jack joked. I huffed a laugh. "We're safe in here. Don't worry, Marty. I'll protect you."
Isaac shook his head. "Felix has hostages. Two of 'em." He informed me.
"It's not me I'm worried about," I said to Jack, "This is a hostage situation."
The Nephilim's expression darkened and Isaac rolled his eyes.
"Personally, I say we go on the offensive. I mean, ya boyfriend here has more than enough juice to disintegrate seven dudes, right? Just waltz out there like we own the place, boom, clap, poof, TA-DA!"
"Ya know, that's actually not that bad of a plan," I said, nodding. I relayed the message to Jack who nodded.
"I could do it." He seemed confident.
"Felix brought six helpers. Have you ever dusted that many guys before?" I asked.
"I have, yes. Many more, in fact."
Well, that was... thoroughly disturbing. He seemed so calm about it. As if anyone who stood against him was nothing more than an obstacle. That could be me one day. That could be me tomorrow.
"Alright then, lead the way," I said, smirking.
Is it bad that I hoped something would happen to Jack? Nothing deadly, of course. Just something that would stop him from using his powers to take my revenge for me. Felix was mine. I needed to be the one to kill him. If Jack did it then what had been the point of it all? So, was it bad of me to hope that the quickest, cleanest solution wouldn't be the one that played out?
Was that wrong?
Did that make me evil?
Did I care if it did?
"Everything's going to be fine, Marty. You'll see." And Jack smiled at me softly and I wondered how long that would last.
I found myself standing beside him at the door to the lighthouse. My blood was boiling for a fight because this was it. Felix was on the other side of that door and in a few hours, I would be free, one way or another. Jack turned the handle.
Across the Event-Horizon.
A vampire, a ghost, and a Nephilim stepped out into the muggy night air. It sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, but it was more the beginning of a new era, at least for me. I stayed mostly hidden beside Jack, maintaining my air of powerlessness. Isaac stepped into place at the Nephilim's other side to match. I could feel the heat of Felix's presence bleeding through the space between us. He carried with him the foul stench of burning tar and just his scent made me want to wrinkle my nose.
He stood about ten feet away from Isaac, Jack, and me, flanked by six other vampires. There was no army, not that I had expected there to be - that wasn't how Felix worked. He didn't need an army, he'd brought two hostages. Two humans knelt on the ground in front of each of Felix's lackeys, poised to die.
Felix's lips stretched into something that approximated a smile but his little ruse was transparent. I could see the hate simmering in his eyes.
"This little game of ours has been fun but a score still stands to be settled and its resolution, I do believe, is long overdue. There is no place left for you to run, child. Are you finally ready to face judgment for your crimes, Martina?" He said. A smile spread across my face to match his.
"Are you?" I challenged, leaving all human emotion out of my voice. I had been so afraid of him before, but that fear was in the past. I had come to witness true power, I had seen it up close and Felix Ashton Monroe was nothing in comparison. I wasn't afraid of him anymore.
"I suppose you'll just have to find that out," He said. "Now, I've just had a rather unsavory chat with one Samuel Winchester. Barbarians those boys are - him and his brother. I do so hope you'll remember the manners I taught you and come along like a civilized being."
"Ready when you are," Isaac reported. His Darth Vader figure was tucked safely in my boot and I counted the fact that Felix didn't know about him as one of the few advantages I had. Both Isaac and I knew that in order to keep that advantage my brother would have to suffer through being dragged behind a car via his attachment to the figure to prevent Felix from noticing his presence. We had decided a long time ago that I wouldn't face Felix alone. Isaac had protested against us facing him at all.
It was ironic, really. He was the ghost, yet out of the two of us, I was the vengeful one. See, Isaac had never sought revenge against Felix. The only person Isaac wanted vengeance against was himself. He sought punishment for his failure to keep me safe, to keep any of us safe. I suppose he got his wish. Ever since that night, Isaac remained trapped on earth with what was less of a mission and more of a duty. To keep me alive. If one looked at it properly, that was another advantage. Isaac had been formidable when he was alive, but as a vengeful spirit and with a threat on my life to power him up, Isaac was alarmingly deadly.
I didn't need to send him a discreet nod to acknowledge his words. The two of us had been preparing for this moment for five years. We knew our roles. We knew what we had to do.
"Marty isn't going anywhere with you," Jack cut in, his voice firm.
"You're Jack Kline I presume," Felix said in his usual drawling tone. His voice too reminded me of tar with the way it oozed lazily around his words. Everything about him was so clean and sharp yet somehow it was all horrifically revolting.
"I am, yes." Jack nodded. He was trying to sound confident and authoritative, mimicking Sam or Dean or Castiel. But he wasn't like them, it wasn't in his nature. Jack was too soft. Felix regarded him with a smirk, studying the boy in a calculating manner as if Jack were merely a rare antiquity he was appraising in an effort to determine its value.
"The boy born to rule..." He hummed, drawing out the words almost reverently. "Yer smaller than the rumors describe ye to be."
"So are you," Jack replied, standing up straighter and lifting his chin confidently.
"Oh, I'm afraid not." That slime ball cracked a smile. "I'm much too careful to allow for rumors of my physical appearance to drift beyond my reach."
"Really?" Jack challenged. "Because it seems like Martina found us. She told us everything about you."
Felix just laughed like he was talking to something as insignificant as a flea.
"Do ye never listen, young one? I said I don't allow rumors to drift beyond my reach. Seeing as Martina is standing directly ahead of me, I'd say she is well within my grasp. That which is mine does not escape me, laddie. She knows that better than anyone," Felix said.
"If you're so careful, then why come here yourself?" Jack asked, struggling to remain impassive. He didn't really have a poker face.
"Why, because unlike an amateur I actually quite enjoy getting my hands dirty every now and again. Especially with a vendetta this personal. Isn't that right, Martina?" Felix taunted. "Will you be coming willingly or not?"
"I said you can't have her," The half-angel forcefully growled. Jack pushed me behind him, shielding me from my creator's gaze.
"Is that so? I was unaware you had a choice in the matter," Felix accosted, seemingly amused. "Were your circumstances not clearly implicit in the situation? No? Very well! If you insist against using so much as a modicum of intelligence, I suppose I'll have to explain this situation to you. See, these dirty, pathetic excuses for intelligent life forms you see trembling before you are called humans, dear boy. I hear you're quite fond of them, and today they are playing the role which we in the criminal world usually refer to as the hostage. Now, their miserable little lives are in your hands, Jack. I am a man of my word thus I will gladly release them, alive and well, upon the prompt return of my property. However, I will not hesitate to rip them both to shreds right in front of you if I don't get my way. Do you understand that , boy?"
Jack didn't respond. He appeared torn between protecting me and saving the lives of the hostages.
"Good," Felix droned, "Now, are you ready to leave, Martina dear?"
" You don't get to speak to her ," Jack snarled. His teeth snapped together with an audible click as he threw his arm out in front of me, not quite ready to give up. Felix rolled his eyes.
"Must we really do this the hard way?" He asked, boredom evident in his tone.
"Yes."
Felix tilted his head and his gaze flicked to me. I could see a hint of amusement in his expression.
"Tell me, lassie. Have you kissed him yet?" He chuckled. Then, abruptly, his expression darkened. "Or is he just that stupid? "
"Who says I did anything?" I replied evenly. Felix huffed, rolling his eyes.
"So you have?" He turned his attention to Jack who just seemed confused. "Did you enjoy it, me boy? If you'll recall, I did wish you a very exciting first, did I not?"
"Marty, what's he talking about?" Jack asked, doubt wavering in his voice. I didn't answer him. Felix was taking a chisel to the wall I'd built in that boy's head. Not causing enough damage to send it crumbling, but planting enough doubt for it to hurt even worse when it did.
"Ah, my devious little Martina," Felix sighed, shaking his head dramatically. "You're as predictable as you are appallingly cruel."
"Guess I learned from the best," I hissed, glaring at him.
"Does that mean you'll be sensible?" He asked, raising a brow.
"You're not taking her!" My angel boy yelled. "She's mine. " A shock ran through my bones as Jack's powers ignited and his metaphysical wings spread out in front of me in a terrifying reminder of what he truly was.
Felix didn't flinch. Instead, he chuckled.
"That's cute," He said, gesturing to Jack's massive wings. Then, he straightened the cuffs of his suit and sighed. From out of his pocket he retrieved a box of matches, pulling one out and striking it. He tossed the match lazily in front of him, the reflection of its tiny flame dancing in his eyes.
The match hit the sand and flickering orange flames erupted from where it landed. The fire spread outward in a ring that encompassed the entire lighthouse, trapping me, Jack, and Isaac inside.
Jack hissed through his teeth as he watched the flames die down. They were low enough to pass easily through, so how were they supposed to contain us?
"In case ye can't tell, that there is holy fire," Felix informed, tucking the matches back in his pocket. "Any angel who finds themselves encircled by holy fire is rendered powerless, and if one tries to step through those flames, one will be instantly vaporized." He looked up again, unimpressed. "Don't get smart with me, boy . I am thousands of years your senior. I'll do with that disgusting whore whatever I damn please."
"No, you won't !"Jack yelled. His wings flared out and a blazing golden light poured from him like molten metal. The air buzzed with a divine power that burned my skin from standing so close. He was like sunlight, and it burned. I cowered away but watched in awe as Jack's veins lit beneath his skin as if gold were pumping through them instead of blood. Because that's what Jack Kline was. He was power. With a sudden ferocity, the flames leaped up, roaring around his body in an effort to keep him trapped inside. But Jack did the impossible and stepped beyond the ring with a cry of effort.
Felix did not cower away as his underlings did; he merely tilted his head with slight interest.
"How intriguing," He mused, folding his hands in front of him. "Tell me, lad. How did you manage that?"
Jack glared at Felix, his chest heaving, for I could tell that act had caused him pain.
"I'm not an angel."
Jack raised his hand, poised to snap the monsters all into dust.
"Oh, I wouldn't do that if I were you," Felix half-heartedly warned.
"Why not?" The Nephilim ground out.
The vampire smiled coolly. "Because these fine specimens here are not my only hostages." Of course, he had more. He was always prepared.
"Where are the others?" Jack demanded, eyes flaring.
"They're safe and sound, I assure ye. Unless, of course, you try to do somethin' stupid, such as kill me. If that's the case, and I do hope it's not, then my people have orders to do some rather unsavory things to a room full of children." Felix raised a brow, daring Jack to make a move against him.
"I can save them," Jack said, confident.
"Please! Ye don't even know where they are!" He scoffed. "Do what ye must, Jack Kline. But I really do fear for the children." Jack gritted his teeth but said nothing. He knew he was beaten. "That's better." Felix turned his attention to me. "Give up this pitiful act of yours, Martina. Come on out. You know this is checkmate."
I stepped away from Jack and stood tall, allowing the thing that had made me to see the steel in my eyes. I passed Jack and planted myself in front of Felix.
"This isn't checkmate, Monroe. This is merely check. I'll be damned before I walk into something with no way out, you know that better than anyone." My voice was calm and cool and I let it chill him. It was my real voice, not that other one I always used to put people at ease. My real voice was the one that makes people do what I want.
The corner of Felix's mouth twitched up. "Oh, yes. I know." He leaned down, his face merely an inch away from mine. "I'm looking forward to it."
"So, where's the car?" I asked, crossing my arms over my chest.
"Right this way, m'dear." He gestured towards the dirt road a ways away and started toward it. I began to follow but Jack's voice made me stop.
"You're a monster," He spat, shaking with rage. His pained expression had morphed into one of hatred and his glowing golden eyes fixed on Felix.
Felix twisted around, mildly amused more than anything.
"Empathy, humanity, and morality make you weak, boy. Alas, weakness is a bitch , isn't it?" He smirked, basking in the pain he caused.
"I SWEAR I WILL KILL YOU!" Jack screamed. His power flared with his anger but there was nothing he could do. The absolute helplessness and hopelessness of his situation finally dawned on him. He never could stand feeling helpless.
"Hold on, I'm confused. Is that not what you do ?" Felix jeered, lifting a brow. Jack froze, his eyes going wide and puppy-like as the vampire's words hit him in the heart. His rage and power dimmed.
"W-What?" Poor thing. His voice sounded so small. He had never been made for this.
"You're the Winchester's attack dog, are ye' not?" Felix clarified. "Playing judge, jury, and executioner for anything you deem a monster."
"You are a monster," Jack scowled, clenching his fists.
"Oh, I know that!" Felix laughed. "But I like to think I've done quite a bit to earn me that title. There are, however, six quite innocent and quite human patients in critical condition at a Manhattan hospital. Six patients, who you put there. Those weren't monsters now, were they?"
Jack's face paled. Sam and Dean had said everyone was fine. Sam and Dean had lied. "H-How did- How did you-"
"That was some stunt you pulled in Times Square, boy," He mused. "Did you really think I wouldn't know about it?"
"Th-that w-was... I-it wasn't... I didn't mean to I-" Jack shook his head in denial. "It was an accident!"
"Why, of course it was!" Felix laughed. "You've not a malicious heart nor the disposition to take an innocent life. Dear boy, you are but a loaded gun for the Winchesters aim at anything they don't like."
Jack shook his head. "T-that's not true! I kill things that are evil because they hurt people." His words sounded hollow like they were something practiced. Like something that had been pounded into him.
"Do ye now? Because as I recall, you killed your own mother and ye' don't even know why. Sad, that." Felix smiled. "You kill because you were bred to; it's your purpose. It's almost cute, the son of the devil thinking he's a hero."
"I am ! I'm a hunter!" Jack insisted.
"You are not a hero," Felix sneered, shaking his head. "You are a murderer, Jack Kline. What else could ya be?" The Scottish man turned on his heel, not caring much to hear what the Nephilim had to say.
"Y-you're wrong. You're wrong about me!" That was all Jack could force out. He tried so hard to keep the tears at bay. I shook my head and turned away from him to follow my creator. "M-Marty?" Jack called out from behind me, his voice laced with desperation and confusion.
I stopped.
In that moment, I finally stripped away the final pieces of the human girl I'd made for him. The girl I'd designed for him to love. Jack would never see her again. That girl was gone now. And good riddance to her; I hoped she'd never come back.
Because she was weak.
And I was not.
Because she was human.
And I was a monster.
Because she was kind.
And I was cruel.
Because she was innocent.
And I was insane.
Because she was honest and grateful.
And I was a deceitful manipulator.
Because she was the blissful mirage.
And I was the horrid reality.
Because she was perfect.
And I never could be.
Because Jack Kline loved that sweet girl.
But that girl wasn't ME.
She never had been.
Of course, I still loved him which only made this harder. But I supposed that in a few hours that would be of no consequence. He wouldn't care. And that fact hurt like a needle to the heart, but pain only brings power to those with nothing left to lose. So, I threw my head back and I laughed as I embraced that pain, just as I did for every other cut and bruise I had ever received. That needle was one in a million and all that pain was what made me real. So, I sighed and turned back to where my angel boy stood, staring at me like some lost puppy.
"I'm sorry, Jack," I said sweetly, "Thanks for getting me this far, I don't think I could have done it without you. Unfortunately, this is something I have to do on my own. This is my last page and nobody can write it for me."
"You can't go," He said, shaking his head. There were tears in his eyes but none in mine. I smiled at him and that was the first he'd seen from me that was real, because, for the first time, Jack was talking to me.
"Why are you worried, Jack?" I was surprised at how smooth and pleasing my own voice sounded, now that I took notice. My real voice was why I was dangerous; when I used it I could make anyone do anything. But there was a reason I had been masking it for so long. It was what had gotten me into this in the first place. "I know you'll come to save me."
"What if I'm too late?" He asked, his voice breaking.
"Then I'll be there waiting for you," I answered.
"You'll die," Jack whispered. I laughed lightly, shaking my head.
"I'm not going to die today, Jack."
"You don't know that!"
"I've known for longer than you think," I said. I watched his teary, desperate expression and copied it to my memory as best as I could. It was the last time he'd look at me that way. At least for a while. "Just do me one last favor?"
"Anything," Jack promised.
"There's a girl you haven't met yet, try not to hate her when you do." I smiled and Jack nodded, trying his best to stay strong.
Then I left him there.
Alone in the sand, he watched a stranger he thought he loved going to what he thought was her death and vowed to save her from it.
Was it wrong for me to deceive him?
Did I care if it was?
Sam paced back and forth along the length of the lighthouse as he waited for Dean and Castiel to return. Every few minutes or so he would check his watch anxiously and run a hand through his hair, muttering something unintelligible under his breath before he resumed his pacing.
But Jack wasn't paying attention to that. He was busy staring at his hands. There were too many thoughts racing through his head for him to focus on any one of them. It had all happened so fast and there was nothing he could have done, but it didn't feel that way. Jack felt responsible. Martina was going to die because of him. It was his fault.
It was always his fault.
The door of the Lighthouse burst open, revealing Dean and Cas standing there in the driving rain that had come on before anyone had time to notice. Dean threw himself inside and Cas trailed after him, taking the time to close the lighthouse door while Dean shook the rain off like an oversized dog.
"What took you so long?" Sam was immediately questioning. "Where were you?"
"Gettin' information," Dean smirked. "It took a while, but one of the bloodsuckers squealed. What happened here, Jack?"
"I kissed Martina," Jack blurted out.
"What?" Sam, Dean, and Cas asked in unison, sharing the same disbelieving expression.
Jack hadn't meant to say it but it just sort of came out. It probably wasn't his fault, though. Jack simply couldn't stop thinking about every detail of his time with the girl in the lighthouse. He wanted to focus on what had happened after, but his brain simply wouldn't cooperate.
"I, um... I kissed Martina..." He repeated, somewhat nervously. "And I think I liked it..."
Had he liked it? Jack thought so; he was pretty sure. But something about it felt off.
Why had he kissed her in the first place? What had compelled him to do that? Jack didn't know.
His memories of the kiss were strange. He remembered clearly the emotions he'd felt, and the intensity of them. Yet, for some reason, Jack couldn't seem to recall where those feelings had come from. He had wanted to kiss Martina, but not like that... Or... maybe he had? It felt to Jack as if the decisions he'd made weren't his own. He couldn't even remember making any decisions, really. All he remembered was those feelings and acting on them. Something about that seemed off to him but Jack wasn't sure. He supposed it wasn't that out of the ordinary for him to behave impulsively. On the contrary, he tended to do that quite a lot. So, what was bothering him?
"Wait..." Dean paled, "You and Marty... You- You two didn't, like... do it in a lighthouse, right?"
Jack tilted his head, brows furrowing. "Do what?"
"C-Cas?" Dean's face whitened another shade as he turned to the seraph. "Please tell me your son didn't-" Castiel gave a long-suffering sigh.
"No, Dean. I really don't think they did anything," He said, rolling his eyes.
"Not everyone is like you," Sam added. Dean waved him off.
"Yeah, okay, but why am I the only one gettin' weirded out by this?" He exclaimed.
"Because we have bigger problems, Dean!" Sam pointed out, exasperated. Sam seemed anxious and Jack wondered what he wanted to tell them.
"Well, I think this is pretty big!" Dean insisted, turning to Jack. "Dude, what the hell?"
"I don't understand what you mean. Martina and I kissed." Jack said simply.
"Dean, seriously. I-" Sam tried. Dean held up a hand, sighing.
Dean sighed. "Jack... Y-You don't do that."
"Dean! Listen-"
"Not now, Sam!" Dean cut him off again.
"Why not? Jack asked, frowning.
"Look, ya just- Ya gotta wait a little while, man!" Dean said, running a hand over his face. "I mean, Marty's like, twelve!" He insisted. By then, Sam had decided he'd had it.
"No, Dean! She's really not!" The younger Winchester yelled, throwing his hands in the air.
"What?" Dean was shocked by his brother's sudden outburst. Sam took a deep breath to calm himself now that he had everyone's attention.
"Martina's not as young as we think she is. I-I think she's older, m-much older." Sam said, stress leaking into his tone.
"What are you saying, Sam?" Cas asked.
"I'm saying we've been played."
***
The car ride was smooth and it was the first time I'd been in a limo, so naturally, I took the comforts offered me. I stretched out across the seat, lounging as I stared out the tinted window. I didn't worry about Felix sitting directly across from me. I knew he didn't want to kill me. Not yet anyway.
"I'm curious, how did you manage to fool them?" He asked, watching me with a comfortable expression.
I shrugged. "Long story, lots of boring details."
"Indulge me," He insisted.
"Why should I?" I asked. He shrugged, mimicking me.
"I'm simply curious."
I hummed. "I bet you are."
He smirked. "Well, what can I say? It's just my nature." I nodded vaguely, continuing to stare out the window. We both knew how this would end. There was no real reason not to tell him.
"Sam Winchester and Dean Winchester and the angel Castiel..." I said their names thoughtfully, allowing the corner of my lips to twitch up into a sly smile. "They seem so simple at first glance. You have the poor unfortunate soul who lost so much yet kept his kindness, the perfect killer who spent his whole life at war, and the fallen angel who found a home. But if that was all there was then I never would have fooled them. However, for men who claim to be so faithless, there's so much they want to believe in."
"Whot do ye mean?" Felix asked, tilting his head. I smirked lazily. T
"I'll start with Sam. Sam is kind because he's damaged, but the last thing he is is a fool. When someone's good at unraveling lies, the last thing you do is give them a really big one to unravel. If you do that, then they'll cut right through and they'll figure you out easily. So, what do you do? You give them distractions. Hide puzzles within puzzles and Sam will stop to solve each one because he loves it. But how do you get him to ignore the big picture?" I stopped and grinned.
"It's easy really. All I had to do was appeal to his hate. Sam Winchester is so extraordinarily full of such raw and powerful hate, that if you simply aim it at a conceivable target, he can ignore anything else. And of course, with his hate blinding him to the truth, Sam can't figure out the lie. All one has to do to fool Sam is give him a puzzle to solve and something to hate.
"So, I made him hate you."
***
"How?" Castiel asked, tilting his head.
"It's Marty. We can't trust her," Sam said. Dean scoffed
"After all that lecturing earlier? Why the hell not?" He demanded. Sam took a nervous breath.
"Because she's been lying to us, Dean," He said. "I-I think she's been lying to us this whole time."
Dean's jaw clenched and he crossed his arms over his chest. "What are you talking about, Sam?" His voice was tight and guarded.
"I talked to Felix after I saved the little girl," Sam admitted.
"You just stood there and talked to that son of a bitch! He's a sick, messed up, psychopath! Sam, what the hell is wrong with you?!" Dean yelled. Sam held out his hands in a peacemaking gesture.
"I know w-what he is, Dean. A-and, believe me, I thought the same things you are now and I swear it was over the phone a-and all he did w-was tell me things. But-" Sam hissed through his teeth and tugged at his hair, seemingly at war with himself.
"But what, Sam?"
"I don't know. He- he just-"
"You don't know?!" Dean interrupted accusingly.
"H-He said things, alright! Felix told me things. Things about Marty. A-and they- they made - They just made so much sense! And I hate him just as much as you do and I don't wanna believe him but-" Sam's voice faltered and he shook his head seeming lost.
"What did he tell you?" Castiel pressed, gentle but still firm.
"He told me Martina killed his wife."
***
"Now, Dean? Dean's a little harder," I said as the driver made a sharp left-hand turn. "Dean's not just a hardened killer, though that's mostly what he wants people to see. He wants people to see the machine without a heart so no one will see how horrifically broken he really is." Thinking of what Dean was really like made me laugh and I flicked my gaze at Felix. "And believe me when I say that there's nothing that could fix him by now."
"But there's so much more to him than the killer and the brokenness. Dean's the righteous man who's never known a day away from war. There are so many things he wants so desperately. Dean dreams of walking peacefully along a beach yet he's never even been to one. For all he's never had Dean tries to give it to others. For all the blood and death he's seen he's remarkably full of love. Love is the key, really. Dean Winchester loves more powerfully than anyone I've ever met. If Dean loves someone he'll do anything for them.
"He sees my age and sees in me the child he never was. He sees me afraid and wants to provide me the protection no one gave him. He sees me flinch when someone yells and wants to offer me the security he never knew. He sees an orphan and wants to give me the parental love he never had. All one has to do to fool Dean Winchester is give him a child to love.
"So, I made him love me."
***
"And you believed him?" Dean scoffed. "Marty is a kid, Sam! She's a kid! Just a scared kid who needs our protection! Marty never could have done something like that."
"Why not?" Cas spoke up. All eyes snapped to the angel.
"BECAUSE SHE'S A KID!" Dean roared. Jack flinched away from him, he'd always hated when Dean yelled. It scared him. Though, this time Dean sounded less angry and more desperate. As if there was something he didn't want to believe. As if yelling the words would make them true.
"T-that's what I thought too. But what if we're wrong?" Sam asked.
"How could we be wrong?" Dean demanded.
"What if Marty's not a kid?" Sam carefully spoke, "What if she's not human?"
Dean shook his head. "No," He said, "No, you're wrong. I know what you're thinkin' and you're wrong." Jack shook his head too. There was no way... was there? Something itched at the back of his mind. He didn't know what it was. Did he want to?
"Dean, I know this is hard to accept, but we need to think this through," Sam said, holding his hands out beseechingly.
"We don't have time for that!" Jack spoke up. "Felix is going to kill Marty! We can't just let her die!"
Sam held up a hand. "He's not gonna kill her, not for a while. We have time."
"No, you don't get it! I promised I'd save her!" Jack said.
"Exactly!" Sam pointed out. "Jack, that's exactly what she wants! She's been planning this the whole time."
"What do you mean 'the whole time'?" Dean inquired, crossing his arms.
"Think back to the beginning, w-when we first met Marty," Sam said, walking them through it. "Why were we in Copper Harbor?"
"For a ghost hunt," Jack answered, impatience leaking through his tone.
"You're right, but there was another case there. What was it?"
"Blood was being stolen from the hospital..." Cas said slowly as if remembering.
"Exactly! Exactly." Sam took a breath. "Now, that ghost in the viral video, who was it? Was it whoever's bones we burned?"
"No, it was..." Jack made the connection. Why hadn't he noticed that before? "It was Isaac."
"Okay, so that means..." He trailed off.
"That Marty was lying about the hunt and the bones," Cas finished.
"Right, now why would she do that?"
"I dunno, professor. Maybe so we wouldn't torch her brother?" Dean rolled his eyes.
Sam pursed his lips, sighing. "Well, yes, b-but no! This isn't about Isaac, this is about Marty. What would she have been hiding?"
"The blood theft," Cas said decisively. Dean shook his head.
"That's a coincidence. Marty can't be - She can't-" He couldn't even say it. He could hardly think it. "Marty can't be a vampire."
***
"Castiel was harder," I continued. "Aside from the fact that he's a multi-billion-year-old cosmic being, Castiel also lacks a soul. That made tapping into his emotions significantly more difficult, but once I did that it was quite clear that I could never fool him. At least, not directly. He's intelligent, not easily deceived, and he always tries to do what he thinks is best. Whatever that course of action might be, more often than not, it hasn't been the right one.
"Castiel is, primarily, a screw-up. There's a lot of history and even more drama involving his fellow angels and the Winchesters, and he has consistently attempted to fight for both sides of the war between them. His torn loyalties have caused a great many more problems than they've fixed and it seems as though any attempt to fix one of said problems breeds yet more chaos. Castiel is rebellious. He can never seem to do what he's supposed to. So, naturally, that makes him the most dangerous piece on the board.
"When Castiel sets his mind on something, there isn't much that can sway him. His actions have proven, repeatedly I might add, that he is even willing to go behind the backs of the Winchesters if he believes it's for the greater good. But his destructive pattern stops only for the one person he's never betrayed. Thus, to fool Castiel one has to fool his son.
"So, I got my hands on Jack."
***
"Why not?" Cas snapped.
"'Cause she just can't!" Dean's voice broke.
"She single-handedly killed five vampires, Dean! Remember?" Cas pressed. "There's no way a mere child her age could have done that."
Jack shook his head, refusing to believe it. "Marty can't be a vampire. Dad, she just can't be."
Castiel sighed, his eyes soft. "I know you want to believe that."
"Why shouldn't we?" Dean challenged.
"Because she killed five vampires single handedly! What part of that escapes your understanding?!" Cas repeated with frustration.
"We don't know what happened in there!" Dean persisted.
"Exactly! WE DON'T KNOW!" Cas yelled.
"THEN WE CAN'T ACCUSE, CAN WE?" Dean shouted back. Jack flinched again and Cas took notice, forcibly relaxing his posture in hopes of reassuring his son.
Sam groaned. "Look at the facts, Dean. The research!"
"Damn the research, Sammy! This is Marty! We know her!"
"We know she's an empath!" Sam spat. "She's been playing with all our emotions, we know that! We need to look at this objectively and, as hard as that might be, it means looking at the facts!"
"What about the facts?" Dean asked reluctantly.
"Think about it," The younger brother said. "W-we did the research, remember? Remember how none of it lined up?"
"Yeah, because Felix messed with it!" Dean tried.
"Not all of it," Sam pointed out, "Marty said she was nine when she died, but her youngest brother was ten. Remember that? How could she have been younger than her youngest sibling?"
"Sam, that-"
"Because she wasn't, Dean," He hissed, "She wasn't nine. Marty was sixteen."
"I-I remember..." Dean froze, his eyes flicking up to meet his brother. "Sammy..." He said, his voice tense and shaking, "How did I forget that?"
Dread coated Castiel's tone as he answered instead.
"I think she wanted us to."
***
"Jack is a very special boy," I said, sarcasm lacing my tone. "Although, he is the offspring of a fallen archangel, so I'd assume that 'special' comes rather naturally. Thanks for that clue, by the way. It would have taken me much longer to figure him out if it wasn't for that itty bitty little detail."
"You would have gotten it regardless." Felix shrugged.
"Of course I would've!" I snorted, shaking my head. "I didn't think my abilities were of any question."
"They weren't," Felix replied. "I know what you're capable of, lassie."
I smirked devilishly. "You should." Felix's hand clenched into a fist and he sent me a tight smile.
"Indeed." He forced the word through his teeth. "Which is why I'm surprised you enlisted to lie to that boy so completely. Doesn't that violate whatever moral code of Donoghue's it is that you've adopted?" I nodded and shrugged with a sigh.
"You're right, it does. Jack is in many senses young and vulnerable and on top of that, he's dreadfully naïve. He could never deserve what I did to him." I huffed out a humorless laugh as my face twisted into a sneer. "But you do. So I made an exception."
Felix shook his head as if disappointed. "Now, now, Martina. When one has a goal, one does not make exceptions. Lest they desire to fail, of course. Only hypocrites make exceptions. Did I teach you nothing?"
"I'm not like you," I spat.
"Is that what it looks like from where you sit?" He mused quietly. I flashed him a barred toothed grin and continued.
"There's only one that Jack Kline truly wants in this world. He wants to be good - to prove to himself and those around him that despite his parentage, he can be good. He's been told that there's something wrong with him, so he wants to find a way to somehow purge it. But he can't because there's nothing wrong and there never was. Yet, he can't believe that. So it leaves him with an insatiable desire to please.
"It's pathetic, really. He seeks validation in everything. He thinks he has to be useful to be loved. Otherwise, he's just a burden, one that nobody wanted. Jack doesn't want to believe that; he wants to be told that isn't true. Jack Kline may be powerful but he's also soft - moldable if you will. See, he's so haplessly needy that it's honestly sickening. He'll do anything for you to tell him what he wants to hear. And he'll do anything to keep hearing it.
"Jack is a combination of his three guardians. He's desperate. Like Dean, he doesn't want to see what's right in front of him. But he's not stupid. I had to erase his memory more than once. Then, like Sam, I simply distracted him and, much like Castiel, I had to keep him in line by appealing to that insatiable need of his. To fool Jack Kline one has to give him someone to save.
"He thinks he's saving me." I smiled fondly when I'd finished, glancing up at Felix with a challenge in my gaze.
"Well, we both know that's impossible," He said, eyeing me with a smirk, "There's nothing left in that cold shell of yours worth saving." I grinned, showing him the insane thing he'd created.
"You're damn right."
***
Then, like a memory, there were words running through Jack's head. Words and voices, but he didn't remember hearing them.
'You said you were nine then! But y-you - you weren't!' That was his voice in his ears. But Jack couldn't remember saying those words. 'You haven't aged a day... Five years and you haven't aged a day.'
'I aged about a month, actually.'
The other voice was Marty. The words buzzed like static, making his headache. Jack shook his head. It was like Deja Vue but entirely more vivid. Sam, Dean, and Cas kept talking. It was hard to hear them through the ringing in his ears.
"Cas, are you saying she can wipe memories?" Dean asked.
"I'm not sure," Castiel replied, shaking his head. "But she can certainly suppress them."
"But it-it must only work when she's around b-because when she's gone - I know for me - When Marty's not around I-I start to remember," Sam said.
The ringing in Jack's ears intensified, making him groan and grasp at his head. He clamped his hands over his ears but the ringing only grew louder. It was like angel radio, but instead of being surrounded by fire, Jack felt like he was burning from the inside out.
"Jack?" Cas was calling his name. "What's going on?"
"I-I don't- I-" Jack gasped, the pain growing stronger. "It hurts! Dad, please make it stop!"
"Jack? JACK!"
He stumbled into Cas's arms as another blurred memory hit him like a train.
'I'm gonna need you to forget that,' Marty's voice whispered in his head. She sounded so gentle, so inviting. She sounded like a spider.
'I wish I could,' His own voice shook as Jack listened to himself say words he couldn't remember speaking. It felt like a memory that didn't belong to him.
There was more to it this time. There was a picture frame, but the picture inside was out of focus. There was an image. It was Martina. She had fangs. And there was something else too. Jack could feel it like a phantom pain. It was terror. The paralyzing kind. The feeling of being trapped. Jack felt the shadow of limbs and he couldn't move. He was trapped. Jack couldn't get out. He was trapped like a fly in a web. Marty was the spider. He couldn't get away. He couldn't get away from her.
She wouldn't let him.
'I can make you forget,' She was going to hurt him. ' Take us back to the night we met. '
'What do you mean?' His voice asked cautiously. He was scared. He was so scared. He couldn't get out.
'I'm going to talk to you, and then you're going to forget, and everything will be back to the way it was.'
'You're a monster.' He'd said
The ringing in Jack's ears faded and he bolted upright, gasping and shaking as panic set in. He needed to tell Sam, Dean, and Castiel what he'd remembered but he couldn't seem to find the words.
"S-She lied." That was all he could force out.
"Jack, what happened? Are you okay?" Castiel worried, checking over him. Jack just shook his head.
"She did something to me," He choked out, shaking. "I don't know. I can't remember. Why can't I remember? She did something to me!" He felt sick. There was something wrong with him.
No.
There was something wrong with Marty.
She was sick.
"What? What did she do?" Dean demanded, eyes wide.
"She-She made me forget. I knew. I-I knew and she made me forget!"
"Forget what?" Sam asked.
"I figured her out a-and she made me forget but I remembered." Jack stopped and only then did he realize he was crying. "She's one of them."
Because she had betrayed him. Marty had betrayed all of them. Jack didn't even know what to believe anymore. Had any of it been real? Or was it all some twisted lie?
"I'm sorry, Jack," Cas offered quietly.
"You were right, Sam," Jack whispered. He couldn't stop his voice from shattering. "Martina is a monster. A-And she lied."
There was silence for a moment. Then, Dean spoke up. Because someone had to take the lead and it was always him. It wasn't fair, but it was always him.
"We gotta go," He said, struggling to make his voice sound cold and firm. But he'd lost a daughter today.
"W-Where?" Sam asked.
"Me and Cas know where Felix is taking Marty. That kid's got some answering to do," Dean answered, his green eyes darkening with his tone. Castiel stood, helping Jack climb to his feet.
"Martina is dangerous, Dean. Are you sure you're willing to do what may be necessary?" Cas asked, watching Dean with a somber expression.
"It's not gonna come to that," Dean said.
"And if it does?"
"I will." Jack's voice was quiet but it caught the adult's attention.
"Jack, are you- Are you really sure?" Cas asked gently. Jack shook his head.
"I don't want to kill Martina. But you're right, she is dangerous." His voice faltered. "I can't let her hurt anybody else."
***
Felix's limo pulled into the garage of what was easily a multi-million dollar home. It was four stories and it reminded me of a castle with its dull grey stone and tall windows. The interior of the garage was constructed simply of polished cement and was entirely empty aside from the car now parked within it. I sent Felix a smirk and climbed from the vehicle, slamming the door shut behind me. The car was surrounded. Twenty or so of Felix's vamps stood guard but I knew they were more for display than anything else. Some of them I recognized, some I didn't.
"And here I thought this little girl's night was just gonna be you and me," I huffed dramatically upon seeing them, "You had me feeling all special."
"Sorry to disappoint, Lassie," Felix drawled. "But don't worry, I invited some of your friends too. Well, just one to be exact."
I shot him a curious glance but shrugged before sauntering my way past Felix's lackeys like I owned the place. I supposed I had, but that was so long ago. Were his minions really still so afraid of me? I surveyed one of the vamps as I passed him, taking notice of the bead of sweat dripping down his neck. He was clearly terrified.
So, they remembered who their queen was. Good.
Spinning on my toe like a ballerina, I let a bubbling laugh escape my throat. All of Felix's soldiers turned to face me, watching with careful eyes.
"Hello, Lovelies!" I called, grinning. A few of them shifted nervously. "Just thought you all should know, both your beloved Prince and Princess are dead! I killed them!" Murmurs spread around the empty garage, echoing off the polished grey walls. "That's right! Boyd's head I ripped off with a tractor, though I'm sure your leader was glad to finally be rid of his bastard son." I glanced at Felix who stood there stoically and winked. "I knew about that, by the way. As for Elwyn, I had the Devil's son snap her into dust like Peter Parker in Infinity War. 'Cept she ain't comin' back!" I giggled in reaction to the horrified expressions of Felix's soldiers and send the man himself a smirk before whipping around again.
"Ye know, Martina?" His voice made me pause though I kept my back to him. "I look at you and I don't see anyone looking back..." He trailed off, his tone thoughtful. "Where is that soul you used to have?"
"Just like I told your daughter, I lost it in the woods in favor of something else. You wanted me to learn something and I learned it!" I eyed him over my shoulder. "You never should have sent me there."
"I know that now." Felix sounded almost solemn. "Whatever Sampson brought back with him wasn't the girl I tossed in, was it?"
I shrugged. "That's where you're wrong. It's still me. Like I said, I just learned something over there is all."
"And what did you learn?" He wondered.
"That you were wrong."
"It doesn't seem I was," He said. I chuckled softly.
"You said I was made to be a queen. You were wrong."
"Aye?"
"I'm not a queen, Monroe." I turned to face him. "I'm a damn Empress." I grinned. "And, honey, you should see me in your crown."
I didn't bother to watch his expression. I just turned and walked.
Pushing my way through the garage door, I skipped down a long, dark hallway decorated with dark wooden pieces that I was sure had cost more money than they were worth. I smirked upon hearing Felix's footsteps trailing behind me. Whirling around and walking backward, I grinned at my former torturer.
"Got anything you didn't wanna say in front of your minions?" I taunted.
"I do, actually." He huffed a laugh that held no humor. "For the record, I'm sorry."
My expression soured. "No you're not."
"I am, truly." He placed his hand over his heart in a gesture of sincerity. "I apologize for my greed and my stupidity. I unleashed you upon this world; that will be my greatest regret, I think. I made you into a plague and I lost control over you."
"You never controlled me," I hissed.
"And I the second I realized that I should have put you down," Felix said. "I just hope the Winchester's don't make the same mistake."
I shook my head. "That's the think, Felix. They will."
"Perhaps. Perhaps not." He shrugged.
"I guess I'll find out, won't I? So! Where's this friend of mine?" I asked, rubbing my hands together.
"Two doors down on your right," Felix answered. I glanced at the door he was referring to then back to him.
"Ooh, goodie. Before I open it, why do I get a present?"
Felix shrugged. "Call it a joke."
I nodded. "Dope."
Then I skipped over to the dark wooden door and grasped the handle. It wasn't locked, of course, so I pulled it open. I didn't look for traps. I knew Felix would never stoop that low. The room was pitch black and there were no windows, but I found the light switch easily enough. Bright fluorescent bulbs flicked on and washed the space with light.
Sitting on a wooden chair in the middle of the room, was a rather muscular man. His arms and legs were tied to the chair and his head was tilted down. I may not have been able to see his face, but I would have recognized that old, grungy cap almost anywhere. I crossed the space between us and tapped him on the shoulder. The man inclined his head, squinting against the light, but when he caught a glance of my face, his usually bright eyes filled with terror.
I had forgotten how fun it was to instill that level of fear. I smirked.
"Hey there, Benny! I haven't seen you since the Hunger Games!"
~We'll never get free Lamb to the slaughter What you gon' do When there's blood in the water? The price of your greed Is your son and your daughter What you gon' do When there's blood in the water?
Beg me for mercy Admit you were toxic You poisoned me just for Another dollar in your pocket Now I am the violence I am the sickness Won't accept your silence Beg me for forgiveness~
Movie Night Confessions - Bang Chan
Word count: 2.8k
Genre: fluff
Requested: yes
A/N: honestly I got carried away and didn’t plan for it to be this long, but I hope you enjoy it!
“No, Jackson don’t go.” You reach a hand out towards him, but he steps farther away from you. The two of you stand on top of the hill as the sun sets in the back. The wind, gently blowing your hair and dress.
“I have to, Y/n. We can’t be together anymore. If we stay together, we’ll only hurt the people we love.” Seeing that there is too much sadness in your eyes, Jackson looks away from you.
“And what about me? Don’t you love me?” You ask him, pleading for him to be with you. You look at his crowned figure, wondering what went wrong.
“But what about Chan?”
‘What does Chan have to do with this?” You think to yourself.
“Yeah, Y/n, what about me?” Chan randomly appears, slowly walking towards you. He’s in his suit of armor, sword by his side. The sunlight hitting his features makes him look even more beautiful to you.
Shaking your head, you yell, “I love you Jackson, not Chan.”
In unison, they ask, “Do you?”
Repeatedly, you yell out your love for Jackson, ignoring the pain in your heart.
“I love you Jackson, not him. I love you Jackson.”
“Y/n, wake up. Wake up!” You are shaken awake, by the loud voice by your head. Rubbing the sleep off of your eyes, you see the owner of the voice. Not bothering to get up, you shut your eyes again. When you feel the impact of another body lay beside you, you still don’t bother to open your eyes, instead you opt for grabbing the pillow your head was resting on and smacking said body with it.
“Awe, are you grumpy because I woke you up from your dream about Jackson Wang?” He manages to grab the pillow this time when you go in for another swing and lays it underneath his head. He turns his body towards you and props his head on his hand.
Mumbling, “Yes Chan, I am grumpy because you woke me up. I’m also grumpy because of dream you.”
His eyebrow raises, “Oh, do tell me what dream me did to make you grumpy.”
Refusing to tell him what happened in your dream, you snuggle into your stuffed bear. That is until you quickly pop up into a sitting position, realizing the current situation you’re in. Slowly turning your heads towards Chan, you ask, “What are you doing in my house?”
He chuckles at you, checking his phone for the time, he says, “Well, it’s my off day and you told me to come by at 4 pm. It’s currently 4:08.”
Surprised by the time that it was, you go to check your phone, seeing that there were a few text messages from Chan. Plopping back down, you shut your eyes and groan in exhaustion. You think to yourself that it was a bad idea to binge watch Criminal Minds until 6 in the morning. Feeling movement beside you as Chan gets up from out of your bed, you don’t bother to move an inch, and when your duvet is yanked away from you, you yelp in surprise. Chan grabs your arms in attempt to get you out of your bed.
“C’mon Y/n, you got to get up now.” You mumble something incoherent that sounds like “don’t want to,” and this makes Chan hoist you over his shoulder, leading you to your bathroom. At this point, you’ve been hoisted over his shoulder so many times that it doesn’t bother you anymore.
Chan sets you down on your bathroom counter and grabs a hair tie and puts your hair into a ponytail. There were many times where you were too lazy to put up your hair, so Chan learned how to do it for you. You hazily watch as Chan prepares your toothbrush and toothpaste, and when he puts it in front of your mouth, you automatically open your mouth and let him start brushing your teeth.
“Aigoo, my Y/n is such a baby.” Whining at the name he called you, you gently kick your legs at Chan, but he manages to dodge them. Feeling the need to spit, you grab Chan’s wrist and move it away from you, turning your head to the sink to spit. Quietly getting down from the counter, you motion for Chan to get out the way to finish your skincare routine, but he grabs you by the waist and place you back on the counter. Just as you were about to speak up, he goes to grab your face wash and motions you to get closer to the sink. As Chan does your skincare routine for you, he occasionally squishes your cheeks together and laughs it off when you frown at him. After Chan was done pampering you, you went to go change into a different outfit, while Chan went out to your living room. Emerging from your bedroom, you make your way to the living room. Upon reaching the living room, you are met with the sight of Chan scrolling through his phone on your couch. Plopping yourself on top of Chan, you lay down and rest your head on his lap. Without looking away from his phone, Chan raises his arms to give you room and resumes scrolling through his phone once you’ve settled down. The two of you stay like that for a few minutes until you become bored. Wanting Chan’s attention, you begin to mess with his hoodie strings. You tie them and pull on them, yet he doesn’t give in to your antics. Pouting, you begin to boop his nose instead, and after the sixth boop, he turns off his phone and puts it down next to him. Looking down at you, he begins to play with your hair, twisting and braiding it. “You know,” Chan starts, “you’re so needy.”
“I’m not needy, I just need my daily dose of Chan.” You give him a wide smile. He returns it by gently petting your head, which makes you giggle. Remembering why Chan was at your house in the first place, you ask, “What’re we watching tonight?”
Taking a moment to think, Chan shrugs, and asks you for your opinion. You suggest watching Tangled, which he agrees to. Chan gently shakes his leg, motioning for you to sit up. Once you sit up, he gets up and stretches out his hand towards you. Without thinking, you take his hand and let him pull you up from the couch.
“Let’s go to the store. I checked your fridge earlier and there’s basically nothing in there. How do you survive Y/n?”
“I don’t need food if I have you.” Instead of finding your response cute, Chan sighs and gently flicks your forehead. Taking your hand in his, he guides you out the front door. As he drives to the grocery store, the two of you discuss what to buy.
Whining, you ask, “Why can’t we just get takeout for tonight?”
“Because dear,” Chan begins, giving your thigh a slight squeeze with the hand that’s been resting there,” it’s better to eat a home cooked meal,” he answers.
At the grocery store, you and Chan push the cart side by side, grabbing the ingredients that you need and the snacks that you want. Chan decided he was going to make you guys pasta for dinner, and while he grabbed the ingredients, he let you put them in the cart, making sure you’re somewhat participating. As the pair of you were in the pasta aisle, trying to figure out which one to get, an older lady tries to pass by, making Chan grab you by the waist and pulling you closer to him to make you avoid get bumped into. You ignore the comment the older lady makes about you two making a cute couple and focus on how close you were to Chan.
Sure, you two were always touchy with one another, but that was when you guys were alone or with your friends. Out in public, you kept the touches to a minimum. With Chan’s job, it was dangerous for him to be anywhere near a girl, but the fans knew that you two were only best friends, so they never questioned it, but still, you didn’t want to risk any rumors spreading.
Clearing your throat, you slip out of Chan’s grip and randomly grab a box of pasta. As you walk back to the cart, Chan looks at you with a raised eyebrow, but doesn’t say anything. The last aisle you go to is the candy aisle and before you can say or do anything, Chan grabs your favorite chocolates and puts them in the cart and then he leads you to the checkout. He ends up paying for everything because he didn’t give you enough time to grab your wallet, which makes you feel bad, but he tells you that it’s alright because he’s the one that wanted to cook. On the ride back to your place, you guys jam out to the GO LIVE album. Chan laughs at you whenever you attempt any of the raps, but hey, at least you were trying.
Once you arrive back to your place, you carry in all the bags; it’s more like you carry the one bag, while Chan carries the rest, but it’s the thought that counts. Since it was still too early to be making dinner, you and Chan decided to relax on the couch. Chan sat down against the arm of the couch and spread his arms out for you. You immediately dive into his arms and settle into his lap, proceeding to watch the Tiktoks Chan puts on his phone. This was something normal for you guys, initially the other boys were surprised when they saw the two of you in this exact same position, but as you continued to hang out with the eight of them, it became something normal for them to see so they ignored it, giving one another a knowingly look. The time you guys spent watching Tiktoks flew by fast because before you knew it, it was already 6:50. Unfortunately for you, you were already too comfortable in Chan’s embrace that you whined, when Chan picked you up and gently sat you on the couch as he got up and headed towards the kitchen.
Like a little child, you follow him into the kitchen and sit yourself on top of the counter. You watch as Chan moves around your kitchen as if he has lived here his entire life. He grabs a pot of water and begins to boil it, and as he waits for it to boil, he asks for you to wash the vegetables as he cuts them up. Standing side by side, you listen as Chan sings a familiar melody. You recognize that he’s singing ‘My Universe’ and begin to sing along with him. Moments with Chan like this were nice; you didn’t have to worry about fans or the public, it was just you and him. It wasn’t often that you guys spent time together, but whenever Chan had the chance, he made sure to spend time with you.
The aroma of the food was surrounding you as Chan began to assemble everything together. You had helped season the pasta as Chan was washing the dishes, but as Chan fed you a piece of pasta, you realized that it might’ve been a mistake to put you in control of seasoning. After observing your face, Chan tries a bit of the pasta himself and makes the same face as you do. “What did you season this with?”
“I put in everything you told me to.” You show him the seasoning that you put in and when Chan grabs a bottle to read it, he shakes his head, “Love, you do realize that this is cinnamon right?” When he shows you the bottle, you gasp, “Oopsies.” You make an apologetic face and say, “I’ll call for pizza.”
Waiting for the pizza to arrive, you and Chan head out to your backyard and set up the screen and projector for the movie. The weather that night was perfect for watching a movie outside, so you wanted to be a little bit spontaneous and watch Tangled underneath the stars. While you were positioning the blankets and pillows the pizza had arrived and Chan went out to get it, after you had screamed to him to grab money from your wallet, which you know that he didn’t. Looking at the whole scenery, you admire the work that you and Chan did. The aroma of greasy pizza fills your nostrils as Chan walks out the backdoor, pizza in hand. Settling down on the mountain of blankets and pillows, you begin to start Tangled. Chan takes his position right next to you and quickly opens the pizza box, drooling as he takes in the visuals. The pair of you sit pressed up against another as you guys eat your pizza and watch the movie.
Tangled was your favorite movie, the storyline and the soundtrack were amazing. You could watch it all the time, and luckily for you, Chan never minded. He also never minded when you sang along with the movie, laughing when you were too out of tune. Once you two were done eating, Chan pushed aside the pizza box and wrapped his arm around your waist, pulling the blanket that was sat on your lap across the two of you. You had easily melted into his warmth, breathing in his cologne. As the movie goes on, you begin to get a bit sleepy, and so you rest your head on Chan’s shoulder, face slightly buried in the crook of his neck, but just enough for you to still see the screen. Watching as Flynn takes Rapunzel to see the lanterns, you realize that Chan isn’t watching the screen anymore, but at you. Nosing at his neck, you ask as you begin to sit up, “What’re you looking at?” Instead of replying, he brushes the strand of hair in your face behind your ear and gives you an embarrassed smile. “Ah, I guess I got caught. I was looking you, wondering how you could be so beautiful.” You blush at his forward response, and give him a slight push, “Oh stop it.”
“I’m serious, Y/n, I think you’re as beautiful as the stars.” Pushing at him again, your face burns even more, however, as you go in for another push, Chan grabs your wrists and pulls you closer to him. He falls back to the ground with you on top of him. Hovering above him, you laugh at his antics, but realize that Chan is staring intensely at you with that same look from before.
Before you could ask him what’s wrong, he begins to speak, “Y/n, there’s something I have to tell you.” Taking a deep breath, he begins, “I like you. I’ve liked you for so long now, I’m surprised you haven’t figured it out by now. The boys have been telling me that I’m so obvious about it, but you obviously haven’t figured it out. Honestly, I was so nervous to tell you because I didn’t want to ruin our friendship, but tonight has made me realize that I want to become something more with you, and I know that being in a relationship with an idol isn’t the ideal relationship. I just know that we could make it work…that’s if you’ll have me.” It takes you a moment to process his words and once you have, you do the one thing that you’ve been wanting to do for so long now. You lean forward and plant a kiss on his lips, quickly withdrawing from him, but you don’t make it far as Chan grabs your face and pulls you back to him, crushing his lips against yours. The kiss is gentle and not rushed, the two of you wanting to savor each other. Once the two of you pull apart for air, you rest your forehead against Chan and entwine your fingers together. He gently brushes his thumb against the back of your hand, waiting, wanting to hear something from you.
“I,” you begin to say, but stop, unsure of what you wanted to say to him. Chan brings up his other hand and caresses your face, encouraging you to go on. “I don’t know how a relationship with an idol works, but what I do know is, is that I really like you too Chan. If you’re willing to try, then I am too.” Giving you the biggest smile you’ve ever seen on his face, he brings up the hand he’s holding and places a kiss on the back of it.
“Love, for you, I’m willing to try anything.”
