I’m so glad the Guillermo Del Toro Pinocchio movie is being received really well, because it was literally my most anticipated movie of the year! So here’s some fun facts about the crew, concept, and production that got me excited about this movie and that I think would excite much of tumblr as well:
-the screenplay was cowritten by Del Toro and Patrick McHale, creator of Over The Garden Wall and a writer on Adventure Time.
-the movie was codirected by Mark Gustasfon, who was the animation director of Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
-the primary art/animation designers of this movie (production designer Curt Enderle, art director Robert DeSue, character designer Georgina Hayns, animation supervisor Brian Leif Hansen, and photography director Frank Passingham) previously worked on projects that include Coraline, the Corpse Bride, Paranorman, Isle of Dogs, Frankenweenie, Kubo, and Chicken Run.
-Besides Netflix, it was produced by the Henson company (always a good sign when you’re doing anything with puppets) and ShadowMachine, who have produced a lot of Adult Swim shows including Robot Chicken, Moral Orel, and Tuca and Bertie, as well as the Netflix original BoJack Horseman.
-Del Toro was inspired to make this adaptation due to the similarities he’d always noticed between the original Pinocchio story and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Both are about a man-made character’s relationship with his father/creator, and his attempts to understand what it means to be human. This inspiration is why the film takes on a gothic feel at times.
-the movie is over 10 years in the making. Del Toro announced the project in 2008 and production began in 2012, but it went into development hell and no further updates were made for several years. Del Toro has described it as his passion project, saying "I've wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember.”
-the backdrop of Mussolini’s Italy was intended to show how Pinnochio was able to find his own humanity and will in a time where everyone else was acting like a blindly obedient puppet. Del Toro wanted to deviate from the original book’s themes of obeying authority by making his Pinocchio virtuous for questioning the rules and forging his own set of morals. (Also if you know anything about Del Toro, the guy likes to dunk on fascism.)
-Del Toro didn’t feel the need to have Pinocchio become flesh-and-blood at the end of the movie, saying all you need to be a real human is to behave like one.
I was lucky enough to see this movie in 35 mm in a movie theatre on Thanksgiving weekend. If there are any movie theatre showings near you and you’re in a position to be able to attend them, I would totally recommend it especially if you can go with loved ones. It was a gorgeous, heartwarming, and magical movie to experience on a big screen and perfect for the late fall/winter holiday season.

A very memorable part of W. E. B. Du Bois' biography of John Brown
One of the slaves, Samuel Harper, afterward told of this wonderful katabasis of a thousand miles in the teeth of the elements and in defiance of the law:
"It was mighty slow traveling. You see there were several different parties amongst our band, and our masters had people looking all over for us. We would ride all night, and then maybe, we would have to stay several days in one house to keep from getting caught. In a month we had only got to a place near Topeka, which was about forty miles from where we started. There was twelve of us at the one house of a man named Doyle, besides the captain and his men, when there came along a gang of slave-hunters. One of Captain Brown's men, Stevens, he went down to them and said:—'Gentlemen, you look as if you were looking for somebody or something.' 'Aye, yes!' says the leader, 'we think as how you have some of our slaves up yonder in that there house.' 'Is that so?' says Stevens. 'Well, come on right along with me, and you can look them over and see.'
"We were watching this here conversation all the time, and when we see Stevens coming up to the house with that there man, we just didn't know what to make of it. We began to get scared that Stevens was going to give us to them slave-hunters. But the looks of things changed when Stevens got up to the house. He just opened the door long enough for to grab a double-barreled gun. He pointed it at the slave-hunter, and says: 'You want to see your slaves, does you? Well, just look up them barrels and see if you can find them.' That man just went all to pieces. He dropped his gun, his legs went trembling, and the tears most started from his eyes. Stevens took and locked him up in the house. When the rest of his crowd seen him captured, they ran away as fast as they could go.
"Captain Brown went to see the prisoner, and says to him, 'I'll show you what it is to look after slaves, my man.' That frightened the prisoner awful. He was a kind of old fellow and when he heard what the captain said, I suppose he thought he was going to be killed. He began to cry and beg to be let go. The captain he only smiled a little bit, and talked some more to him, and the next day he was let go."

i want a minecraft movie where you think its about beating the ender dragon to escape back to the real world, but suspicously, nothing is goinng wrong, and it seems to all be happening rather quickly. about half an hour into the movie, they beat the dragon and the portal in the center of the island opens up. and the one with a child, and a partner at home jumps through. and the one with a good group of friends junps through. and they all jump through except for the one with nothing to go back to. turns out, the movie is a slice of life/comedy where the backround character from the beginning of the movie, the one who really has had no motivation to get home, builds their life up from the ground up, like in regular minecraft. but, the thing is, it's on an already speedrunned world. so they have elytra, and access to the nether, but they don't have a house, or anything. slowly, the character spends years building a city, admittedly, an empty one, but the biggest city they've ever been in nonetheless. every block is gathered by hand. every block is placed by hand. and finally, they sit among their empty city, old and gray, a lifetime of solitude behind them, but a lifetime of peace. and they think of that portal. they wonder if they should have gone through it when they were young, when their friends did. so they visit the portal, as they have done through the movie, and they sit on the edge and contemplate joining their friends. and once more. they turn away. but they are old, and fragile, and clumsy. and they fall in. they hear two voices. they can't exactly make out the gender of the voices, but one sounds green, and the other sounds blue. and the main character listens as they talk about the main character's accomplishments. and then, they wake up. aeound them, their friends wake up. like no time has passed at all. and they realise that the voices were right. and the game was simply just a dream. and the title of the movie suddenly makes sense, just as the movie ends - minecraft:the longest dream

changing from "ambrosius blows off ballister's arm accidentally on purpose because he wanted to win so bad" to "ambrosius panics and does as he was trained in a moment of utter betrayal and senseless violence" was. so. like changing it to a deliberate. overt. act. getting it out on the open. insane. the movie made choices and they were all sexy.

I saw a post that pointed out something important so I feel the need to clarify
I think I would still like Netflix ATLA to somehow make Zutara canon
HOWEVER
I know it wouldn't actually be making "Zutara" canon
"Zutara" requires both Zuko and Katara
right now, my boy is hard to see and my girl is absent, nowhere to be seen
BUT
considering the fandom ignited once more over a short (but kinda fascinating) scarf scene, I would love to see what crumbs or moments they would give us (the fans) to work with

Swan Lake adaptation where Odette and her assorted other maidens are cursed same as always (swans during the day, human again between midnight and dawn) BUT there's also just some random wild swans caught up in the curse and they are their normal swan selves during the day and turn into humans at night, but still with swan brains.
So the plot is basically the same except that there's a couple of these humanized swans hanging around most of the time who A. see Odette and the maidens as part of their flock and are protective B. are swans and therefore crave violence at all times

The family is almost complete!
I recently got the new pops for Steph, Cass and Duke. Almost everything else was slowly acquired second hand over time.
I have Alfred, I have Kate, I have the BatFam, I even have Wayne Manor.
I'm just missing a Damian now.
