forever obsessed with dynamics between vampires, specifically that of a maker and fledgling, as a way to explore abuse. the creation of a vampire itself can so easily be a literalization of the lasting impacts of trauma and also much more simply the ways a perpetrator might shape their victim’s very identity. the extremes of isolation in the way that the new vampire, in most narratives, must cut all ties to their mortal life, or else go through an elaborate charade to maintain the facade of humanity, while forever still being removed from it. and the sheer dependence and vulnerability of being in an entirely new state of being, wholly uncertain of what it entails, and relying on another person to define… everything.
#or just the moral dilemmas#rewatching amc interview is kind of making me insane#that moment in episode two when louis is looking for a sort of assurance in the fact that lestat may actually have some good in him#look at how he cares about music look at the simple wondrous things that can bring him joy#and then the immediate dread when the opera performance turns out to be imperfect because he knows how lestat will react to *that*#I think there’s also something really interesting in the highlighting of lestat upbraids the less skilled singer before killing him#(slowly)#but also I will wait to watch more before I articulate my thoughts#vampires#interview with the vampire#amc interview with the vampire#I do still find the lestat and claudia film and novel dynamic by far the most compelling for how she tries to usurp him but almost to be him#but I’m enjoying this#I’m very curious if I will like show claudia more on rewatch#the movie always resonated most with me (sue me lol) because there seemed to be more simultaneous fondness and attachment even at the end#dark stories of the north

I finished Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus and I think i'd give it a solid 7. It clearly did as much as it could with the animation, which is kinda funny considering that's what originally got it cancelled in the first place, but i wasn't really a fan of the art style change and the colors.

The movie was just a tad too saturated I think for me, when i definitely remember the show having this crude, and honestly offputting (affectionately said) vibe. And it kinda ditched it's kinda ugly vibes, lol. It reminds me a bit of those PBS cartoons.
Anyways, i don't think the plot was for me, unfortunately. The two part special episodes where Zim comes close to destroying the world, but always fails, was old to me by the time i finished the show, so the movie, which came out 15 years later, wasn't exactly something I would be interested in. It was also basically a Dib pov, too, which i'm not a fan of, and they didn't even go hard on his relationship w/his dad, either.
The movie was described like this:
which kinda happens, but it's bait for Dib to drop his guard, and Zim basically does the same thing he's always done. It's not bad, but it feels like a plot for a movie we would have gotten in 2007, a year after the show was cancelled, not a plot for one more than a decade later. Idk if this is too much to ask, but i remember kinda feeling bad for how dumb zim was in the show with how much he tried to get the Tallests' attention, so I was hoping something would eventually change, and this description got my hopes up, but no, it was just a joke 😭 I even kept hoping maybe in the last quarter of the movie, it'd change, and it'd focus on Zim disengaging from the tallest somehow.
The movie also noticeably recycled a lot of jokes from the show in a way that felt like way more than a simple call back or reference, and more like they couldnt think of a new joke for zim, gir, or gaz to say.
Time passed irl, and the movie references that, too, yet Dib immediately fixes himself, zim's inability to change isnt really acknowledged, and Professor Membrane, who seemingly is set up to finally acknowledge Dib's goals, in the end doesn't really change, either. It also made use of Tak's ship, which felt frustrating since she seemed to be teased a lot in the end of the series, without ever showing up, so her actually showing up here would have been interesting. I think basically the only thing that changes in this movie is the Tallest (and the irken empire?) dying in the end.
So... I feel like it's nice it exists, but it definitely cut the original show's gritty aesthetic, and nothing really definitive came from this. It feels like more of the same, specifically the parts i liked the least about the series, so I didn't exactly feel like I gained too much after seeing this. I loved Gir, but even he reused old jokes, which felt frustrating after it was noticeable.
#personal#invader zim#i look at this comparison and the show was like a dark green/brown and the movie is very vivid red/pink/purple.#idk i think abt other reboot series like Samurai jack or Scott Pilgrim and those did a good job of changing things up#and talking abt their series in a new way while still seeming in character and all that. while here felt either like a continuation as if#it hadnt been cancelled or if the original creator wasnt a part of it to create new ideas so they reused old jokes as more than a reference#and i really wonder why the creator didnt want a show. apparently it was offered. usually the creator wants to do more but the execs are li#ehhh and offer a platitude. he even went down to just this movie instead.#idk i feel like if u just want a movie u could have had like. an actual conclusion for things. zim is disappointed and struggles w not#having the tallests' praise. tak definitely should have been a main character. membrane at least could have been a bit more serious

Finally read Wonder Woman Historia because of your posts about it and damn. goddamn. that was fucking life-changing. literally what the fuck this should be a required read for every single comic book fan to ever exist. fuck
YES OMG THATS WHAT IM SAYINGGGGGGGGGG
(Also yesss got one mwahahaha I'm literally so glad you read it because of me omg 🤗🫶)
No but truly like life-changing sounds intense but is honestly the word for it. Like at least personally I can't emphasize the impact that book has had on me? I first read it about a year ago and finished it just SOBBING. I wasn't even a Wonder Woman fan before reading it. I wasn't even a Wonder Woman fan before reading it. Like do you understand I now run a Wonder Woman blog, I own multiple WW articles of clothing and my entire wall is covered in WW issues and items. If I had to list my top 5 books (not comics, books) of all time Wonder Woman: Historia would be an automatic contender. I reread it constantly, and bring my giant ass hardcover that is too tall for every bookshelf everywhere. It is constantly on my mind.
Anyways just sooooooo so glad you got a chance to read it (especially because of me!!!) because Historia is truly my favorite comic out there and I think it's one of the best things from the medium as a whole : )
Anyways all you folks listening this is you sign to READ WONDER WOMAN: HISTORIA!!!
#when i say i wasnt a wonder woman fan before reading it i dont mean to say i didnt like her or wasnt interested in her#i was (and am) a girl and like superheroes and wonder woman had shown up in the various dc cartoons i grew up with#and id watched and liked wonder woman (2016) back when it came out in theatres etc.#but as a kid it was always kind of clear to me that the trinity was presented as a marketing thing but it always felt like#batman superman & also Woman. like it seemed a very obvious “oh and btw we have women here too!” in a way that wasnt really backed up or#shown in anything i was watching. like wondy has never had an animated series. never had a mainstream movie before 2016. was there but not#well developed or shown in any of the series she did show up in. and kid me definitely wasn't watching the lynda carter series because it#wasnt airing anyways!#like i was a dc fan for a few years had read a good amt of comics already seen at least some of most dc series' out there and yet had like#never really been introduced to who is diana and hippolyta and the amazons like that in a way that clicked#like i had all the ingredients to be an atrocious wonder woman fan all lined up but that book is so good it set me off like a nuclear bomb#this land has been irradiated w it for generations to come

i'm 2/3 through a se/ries of unfor/tunate events and i'm pretty satisfied with it (the books were a staple of my childhood so i've been pretty possessive over them) - but they have serious casting issues. i seriously barely can tell the female volunteers apart. the secretary is blonde at least, but the mother, the librarian and the sister give me flashbacks to the face blindness i had while watching the ter/or
#ngl i haven't read past the boarding school though#i didn't agree with the choice to start showing their entire hand wrt vfd; parents being alive(?) etc from the very beginning#but i guess it's okay. certainly makes sense for a series#also it's still a bit of a struggle to replace carrey with nph as olaf#like i don't remember more than glimpses of the film(s?) but afai can remember carrey seemed absolutely perfect to me#it took some time to get used to nph's voice for the role. he's giving a good performance though#my commentary#now the childhood thing i'm MOST irate over is ht/tyd#literally don't get started on what kind of ills i'm wishing on everyone who made the cartoon#i'm not even talking about the live action movie#EDIT: okay it took me 1.5 seasons and an episode to realize that wasn't their parents.... i feel embarrassed now

Showing my roommate Alien for the first time
Him: This is sooo like Prometheus
Me: Wait you've seen Prometheus but not Alien????
Him: No, I just was trying to think of something dumb to say that would annoy you lol
Me: OK GOOD cause as I said before, no judgment from me for not having seen Alien, but if you'd seen Prometheus but not Alien, then we might have a problem
*15 minutes later*
Him: Wow ok that ship does kinda look like the stuff in the Prometheus trailer though
Me: I mean yeah that makes sense
Him: Wait Prometheus is part of the Alien series?
Me: WHAT IS EVEN HAPPENING RIGHT NOW
#as with almost every perfect movie I've shown my roommate#his reaction was a really noncommittal “that was a fun time”#Like not a negative reaction#but not by any stretch of the imagination an enthusiastic one#He and another friend of mine are both people I show a lot of movies to#and I LIKE to think I base those movies off of the sorts of things I know they like#and they are usually movies most people agree are very very good#and I am repeatedly met with lukewarm reactions that make me think#“WHAT DO YOU LIKE IF NOT THIS? IF YOU LIKE THIS GENRE HOW DO YOU NOT LIKE THIS???”#admittedly I wasn't sure Alien specifically was gonna be 100% his type of thing#but when Alien came up in conversation the other day he got SO apologetic that he hadn't seen it#which he does any time any piece of media that's extremely famous that he hasn't seen is mentioned#and he was like I KNOW I should see it#and I was like I'd watch it any time#but I also tried to tell him like 30 times that if it isn't a movie he wanted to see#or actually thought he would like#then we shouldn't watch it#the problem is any time someone mentions anything they like#or extend any sort of offer to show him something they like#it seems to be a matter of principal to him that he MUST consume the recommended media#regardless of whether it's his thing#alien 1979#Alien#Prometheus

didn't expect to be thinking about this today but shrek (2001)? holds up. you can see how it was considered really fresh and new at the time because it was parodying all the usual disney tropes (made with spite by people who had just left the company) but it's also a genuinely well-done parody/subversion of typical fairy tale tropes and it's got just enough sincere heart to it that it works very well on its own. how often do you see a "beauty and the beast" type of story that ends with both people remaining "beasts" as their happy ending? they did a good job combining the gross crude humor and the parodic elements with a real love story and i'm still charmed by it. i do think it deserved the first ever best animated feature academy award. the cgi's a little dated-looking but not even to a distracting extent. there's "adult" jokes that don't feel forced or detract from its appeal to kids. and it ends with a dragon breaking into a church and disrupting a traditional heterosexual wedding by eating the fascist tyrant groom so the princess can marry her true love in a swamp. what more could you ask for
#shrek#i will most likely not be seeing shrek 5 because i don't care that much about the shrek franchise#i'm just watching nostalgic animated films tonight#if this was made today people would be calling fiona a “girlboss” in a negative way :/#probably because of the scene where she fights off robin hood and his men in a totally random seeming action sequence#complete with very of-its-time matrix reference that would have completely gone over kid me's head#but...idk it's part of the parodic element of the movie and it parallels the scene where shrek fights off all the knights at the tournament#and the film does a good job of showing her as already being independent and resourceful and just as willing to be gross and dirty#i think she's a surprisingly well-drawn character actually! she fits in with disney's more independent and rounded renaissance heroines#anyway i hope shrek 5 makes fun of disney's current aversion to anything original and attempted ownership of everything

in terms of kdramas I actually think it's okay to not be okay explores trauma with much more depth and nuance, but it focuses on complicated family dynamics and family abuse rather than school violence. still I think it's overall a lot more emotionally powerful
#I never finished extraordinary attorny woo 😔 I don't think the netflix kdramas tend to appeal to me visually#aesthetically they all seem very polished and sleek and look really ummm well funded. makes me a little nervous#not that high production value is always bad but I like shows to be a little messy....#movies like parasite or the handmaiden are so good that they can justify the production value and the money that goes into them is clearly#well-spent#but in every netflix kdrama I've watched the male leads all look very generic and charming and nice and the sets and the outfits#are all so shiny and polished and it's just...idk I wish there was more variety and grittiness in it#the glory lb

Good news I guess: they cancelled the live action Loud House show.
#or at least seem to have quietly done so#because on the sixteenth this month this year ritas actress had to be the one to say online yeah uh S2 is last season#which....honestly this show having a short life spam was coming very fast#because unlike animation where you can recast voices live action becomes tricky as hell#aka see when they tried to make a fourth wimpy kid live action with a new cast#cause surprising no one even by third film the kid actors were growing up and by fourth film yeah they too old#so a live action loud house i didnt see lasting long#but two seasons...god damn#thats very short#and i say good news...because i was mixed on this show#some of the episodes were good i liked the teacher parent conference that felt like it could have been in the animated one#but then you get episodes like...the butt pimple one...that literally felt like dan schneider had been in charge of the episode#aka an episode that literally put a real life child in a diaper for humor#like live action loud house was fine with the movies but the show definitely was mixed

see you could say as much as you like that luffys dream isn't gonna be heroic bc he's not a hero or w/e. but luffy always does heroic shit Constantly. even if he wouldn't consider it heroic himself it's probably going to be some incredibly admirable shit. you can't take luffy at face value when he says that like. just look at him. boy's a hero innit
#i imagine the dream has smth to do with ushering in a new age. likely one of freedom. or like pirates which = freedom to him#and then you could be like “oh well not everyone will Like freedom” and thats why its Not Heroic#cuz he tells uta he's gonna bring forth a new generation at one point. in a filler episode for the movie but. that does seem significant#one piece#monkey d. luffy#i think people tend to take the “he's a pirate” thing too far#like yes he is a pirate. and also yes he is a very good boy. and he does heroic things all the time. those are not mutually exclusive#he's not The Kind Of Hero That Is Self Sacrificing specifically. but like. he is a hero. just like if you look at what he does. he is.#and like saying he's not a good boy bc hes a pirate is like. come on. are you watching the show#luffy's goodness is intrinsic to the show. it drives forward the plot constantly#luffy would not get as much support from ppl around him if he was not good!!! everyone helps him because he's good!!!#and he constantly wants to help people!! and fights to make their lives better!!! because he's good!!!!!!!!!!

so a project I’m starting (kind of) to work on is rooted in film analysis from the perspective of someone who enjoys trash media (or media that is not Superbly Popular) at least, and that means rewatching a lot of my mid-to-bad faves — and it occurred to me that it might be nice to maybe connect with some folks who, maybe like me, don’t have a lot going on in the fleshworld at a given moment
basically the point is: if anyone would occasionally be interested in some kind of group chat Bad Movie Night, let me know? I mean I know there are only twelve of y’all seeing this but hey! connection and mutual joy I think is gonna be important in the coming times, and maybe it would be fun to enjoy some “bad” media together, if that’s a thing anyone would be partial to. hmu!
(for reference/ideas, I personally want to get into my large catalogue of Bad Zombie Movies That I Enjoy To An Unreasonable Degree, but horror is by far not the only genre I’m interested in. I was thinking good ol not-quite-good queer ‘classics’ like Better Than Chocolate, maybe revisiting some shitty movies I liked during my blunder years like Empire Records or G*psy 83 [wikipedia link for the curious]— you know, not really any high brow or impressive stuff, definitely stuff that is far from perfect, etc etc)
#I’m assuming probably not many ppl will have an interest or the time BUT#I could prolly put together a list of the films I currently have in mind and ofc I’m always open to suggestions#matter of fact: if you have a movie or show or game that you LOVE but can’t seem to find many others who do — pls suggest it to me#this is also ok to reblog if any of you are like ‘oh I’m mutuals with someone who would be into that’ or w/e#I was gonna list y tu mama tambien on here as a ‘movie I liked in my teens’ but that movie is like…not bad so#idk maybe we can throw some better stuff in there who knowssss#cuz I was also gonna add saving face to queer classics but also…imo pretty good movie#this is the trouble. these movies are not blockbuster hits and some are in fact very bad but I DO Really Like Them

I'm so heavily anti-advertising that all pitches sound goofy silly to me/I can never take them seriously, so I have no idea how I'll manage to to advertise my game even if I do finally finish it soon-ish lol...
#Especially how so much modern media advertising is like... getting people excited about random tropes and stuff like#''Do you love enemies to lovers? Do you love sad stories that make you do a heckin CRY? Do you love big stupid dumbo muffin cake#sinnamon roll babies who are too good for this world? Have you ever wanted to read a blah blach blah" whatever stuff and it's like#... i cannot type that... I couldnt do it.. I couldn't even think of how to do it ghbjhbjh#I am such a literal person... Like I love when an advertisement is just like 'This product works well. Look at it. Buy it if you want. Ok'#You know what makes me want to read a book or watch a show or play a game? Reading a detailed plot synopsis or the full wiki page#for it and then deciding 'yeah I wouldnt mind sitting through seeing the events I just read about happen in more detail' lol#OR aesthetics. since I do often watch things JUST for the set/costume design. Sometimes I will watch stuff literally#just because I saw a picture of a costume in it that looked really cool and I want to sketch costume looks whilst watching#But aside from appearance like... little bullet point break downs of things that are in a story just ... do not do anything to me at all.#And i just hate 'selling' things to begin with. I don't want to have to convince people to like something.. they should just... like it...#LOL.. like.. just be born liking it. just like it automatically please. Dont make me beg to you like a weird little freak. So many commerci#als seem weirdly desperate and manipulative. Like those Truck/Car commercials that will have like a freaking dog crying and#a war vet in a wheelchair with the american flag in the background and a family hugging around a christmas tree or some shint and its#just like oh my GODDD... shut UPP.. you could literally not be MORE blantant about just trying to prey on peoples emotions to build#some sort of fabricated positive association with your product/brand.. begone.. Or brands having their own twitters where they post#~~relatable content~~ as a means of shallow audience endearment GGGRR..... ANYWAY.. hhrgh...................#Maybe that's something I can ask playtesters I guess like.. I feel like I don't know my own audience very well because I am not#much of a media person?? ironically.. Like I do enjoy MAKING media. But I've never been in a fandom. I've never read fanfiction. I've never#spent much time in those spaces. I've just never really had the inclination and don't personally derive much joy out of stuff like that#(since I'm already so focused on my OWN world and projects its like.. hard for me to even find the time and mental energy to expend on#others). Even when I finish a movie or game and really like it.. I just kind of like...move on? and don't really dwell on it much? At most#I will get into the worldbuilding of a piece of media and read the wiki for a while or watch Lore info or critical analysis videos. But I#never really care for or attach to the characters or the plot itself very much. So I feel like.. the way my brain works. I'm just not as#good at approaching things from that angle? Kind of like how if you're a lifelong vegetarian whos never eaten meat - you might#struggle to write an ad for fancy brand of steaks bc you'd be like... idk what meat eaters are even looking for? whats the selling point??#Which I'm not saying that I wouldn't play my own game. i AM definitely the audience for it. But it's more like.. I would play it for my own#very niche specific reasons that I think are different from what MOST people might want to play it for. So I need to somehow#tap into the minds of the Majority who play things for Normal Reasons than pure lore collection or whatever lol.

NEW GREAT PRETENDER MOVIE IS SO GOOD BTW.
#i have so many thoughts#i really enjoyed all the new characters!!#i usually dont like it when shows bring back characters that are supposed to be dead but they did it pretty well#dorothy doesnt remember anything from before and she is just living her own life#and the story is about Her first and foremost even if Laurent had his grubby hands all over the case#laurent really has grown a lot in the time since becuase hes keeping his distance he knows he shouldnt be anywhere near the case#and i understand him at the end when hes talking to her at the station. its very clearly a goodbye for him#hes letting go and letting them both go their separate ways#i also really like how unclear edamura's status with the crew is#hes clearly still friends with abby but he doesnt seem to have anything to do with the case#which is so good for him after the shit he went through im glad he actually said no and left#but he still keeps in contact with abby which makes me happy :)#also i did catch the cynthia name drop from i think the like cartel members?? made me gasp#SO SAD we didnt get to see her or abby :(#other notes the lady with the african restaurant was a delight i loved her#ALSO I SWEAR THEY MADE EDAMURA MORE TAN. HELL YEAH#grepre#great pretender#great pretender movie#great pretender movie spoilers

inside out 2 is interesting but it sure is the exact same plot as inside out 1 down to the emotions getting stranded outside hq as a core aspect of rileys isbeliminated and having to start from scratch while joy loses hope and cries while watching memories in a pile of memories that were deemed unimportant before being deus ex machinad by an imaginary cartoon
#inside out 2 spoilers#except joy has not learned her lesson about all emotions and memories being valuable and that she is not in charge#of making the call of which emotions are important. she builds her team up by emphasizing the good they do for riley#and continues to be an absolute control freak who puts an emphasis on her own importance seeming to have learned very little#some could argue that the emotions arent distinct enough or are even too nebulous to be their own emotions#and according to many theories in the subject all emotions come from combining multiple of the core emotions#which is why having nostalgia show up for a gag was... interesting. considering the first movie literally showed us joy and sadness memorie#create nostalgic ones. otherwise i mostly just feel like theyre too disparate and am still shocked how joy is like. the only positive#emotion. period.#anyway yeah it kinda underminded the first movies thesis that all emotions are important and helpful by making anxiety basically plain bad#even despite her explanations of why shes good. like she drops her memory in the sense of self and it immediately sprouts ominously#like idk maybe im just quibbling over foreshadowing in a childrens movie but to keep in line with that original thesis#wouldnt it make more sense to get more corrupt only as anxiety continues to flood it with only her emotion#like basing your entire sense of self and personality/beliefs around one emotion entirely is extremely unhealthy#and like it starts normal and gets more erratic as anxiety becomes the ONLY contributing factor. its probably not that important#okay so joy learns her lesson about the memories. but its still like. girl did you not already basically learn this before
