i’ve stopped expecting interesting animation from bones. the star and stripe fight is cool but like every other fight/moment in mha, it’s only cool bc the source material itself is cool; bones does nothing to elevate the manga

they rarely try to experiment with colour and style. i saw so many colourings of the moment star and stripe made a giant version of herself out of the air; people made her look like a cosmos, like it reflected and bent the sky around her, doing so many inventive things and for the anime to just make her an outline against that godforsaken sky? i’m disappointed

but people will take me saying i’m disappointed and spin it to me saying the fight was bad. it wasn’t, just like most fights and moments in the anime aren’t bad but that’s all bc horikoshi knows how to draw. they never do anything beyond that; they never try and adapt it. whether it’s bc of time, direction, budget, or what have you, they will never do something truly inventive with their colouring

i’ve said this before and i’ll say it again, it’s not just that the sky is blue; it’s what the blue sky represents and that is an unwillingness to broaden their colour palette or atmosphere to support the changes in the tone of the story. the story isn’t just “will midoriya get into his dream high school and achieve his dream job?” it’s child abuse and societal systems and their dysfunctions, it’s racism and morality and is it right to try and save someone who’s determined to destroy the world just bc they are also a victim?

look at the finale of atla, a show that mirrors the narrative tone of mha; it starts out bright and colourful and vibrant to match the happy and small stakes nature of the story and as the tone of the story changes, the environment changes to reflect that. the siege of the north pole? everything goes blood red when the moon spirit is threatened, then goes completely desaturated when it is killed with only fire bending having any colour. the day of black sun? uses a solar eclipse to change the lighting. the entire sozin’s comet fight? has red skies and lighting to show the threat

bones abject refusal to change anything about the art itself is a detriment to horikoshi’s complex narrative

Some sort of magic was imbued into your voice as you came to NRC. you didn't discover this ability until later when the ghosts were calmed one rather loud night. With grims help and the insistence of Ace, you discovered many different songs could bring out different emotions. with rock bringing rage, excitement, and energy. to lullabies putting people to sleep immediately. Pop brings out a joyful childishness, and country music makes everyone have an accent for a bit. It might not be the best of magical abilities, but it has definitely come in handy when dealing with the emotionally constipated mess of the NRC school of troublemakers.

Azul: It was complicated at first, and the events of book 3 go very similarly to the little mermaid, he steals your voice and the amazing power it contains that has never been seen or heard of before, he HAD to have it, you understand right? After the overblot incident, he wanted to hear you sing but was ashamed of how selfish he was for stealing it from you. Over time you two become friends and start to date, your songs pulling him like a siren's call to the deep. This man is putty in your hands and would die for you if you asked. At the end of the day, you two harmonize together, singing gentle and calming songs to wind down from the day's usual chaos and antics. When he hears your voice he leaves his work immediately. begged Asked you to sing for the lounge on weekends, it would bring in revenue and help build up your confidence! and he would be able to hear your voice that much more he loves it so much please. Happily basks in whatever music you sing, and shares what he feels for you. Your songs pulled him out of his shell that much more and he loves you so much for it.

Jade: Oya~ was the first to discover your unique ability when he was foraging for mushrooms near ramshackle, you were singing pop music from home and Jade could feel a sort of unnatural giddiness in his heart as he listened. Got some information from the first years about it. He cornered asked you if you would be alright with experimenting on your unique ability with him. At first, it was all business and curiosity about your ability, but as the weeks went by he found himself growing fond of your vocal abilities and how excited you were that you had some form of music. You bring out deeper emotions that Jade is not used to (I headcanon that jade is a sociopath, who doesn't feel emotions much). He starts to do smaller sessions with you and even joins in on your singing, even confessing his love for you through a song you introduced to him. You sing songs of nature and joy as you both hunt and forage in the mountain lovers club. He has hearts in his eyes as you sing and examine a mushroom, took a photo, and has it saved as his wallpaper. supported the idea of you singing in the lounge, he would happily accompany you on the stage if you're shy about it. Come now darling~ won't you sing for him?

Jade's favorite types of songs to hear from you are little jingles (they make him chuckle), love songs, any nature-themed songs, and smooth jazz.

Floyd: Calles you "humpback whale" they are known most often as the singing whale species. He finds it fitting for your nice voice and how it reaches and affects things and people around you. He LOVES to hear you sing and usually tries to sing along with you if he knows the song. Happily listens to you if it's a softer song. Recorded you singing a lullaby from the coral sea, he can't fall asleep without hearing it now. Loves to give you song ideas and will hype you to sing if you're shy about your abilities. He even starts to work on bettering his singing to see if he can have any effect on you like you do so much with him. If anyone dares to say anything negative against your voice you'll never see them again, or at least you won't see them out of a wheelchair. Happily pushes the idea of you singing in the lounge along with jade and Azul, just so he can hear you sing as he works.
