Alright everyone, here’s the first chapter of my Tom/Harry/B’Elanna fanfic. I probably won’t be updating on a regular schedule (especially since I have a lot of stuff going on IRL that’s keeping me from writing right now. However, I do have a few chapters already finished and ready to be posted whenever I feel like doing so.

Comments and kudos would all be greatly appreciated. It’s been a while since I tried my hand at any Star Trek fanfiction. Also, I can’t tell you how self-conscious I am right now after not writing anything besides one-shots for thirteen years.

6. Does this chapter/fic have any twists that you’re proud of?

I don't really consider myself much of a twist writer, but one perhaps unforseen and unfortunate consequence that is in full force in this chapter comes from Elrond regaining his Music -- which has led to him really getting the strength of his Sight back at perhaps the best worst possible time for it. On the one hand I'm very glad that Elrond was able to heal in time for how close we're getting to Sauron's return. On the other hand it's very inconvenient for him to be wracked with The Horrors & saying Strange and Unpleasant Things to his boyfriend.

I do really hope that Gil's arc will come as a (pleasant and hopefully not too-out-of-left-field) surprise, but again I'm not going to force it if he simply Refuses to Develop. In any case I am beating him with a rolled up newspaper on the nose in a desperate attempt because he's one of those very troublesome antagonists who has a chance of turning out okay in the end if he actually is willing to admit he fucked up and put in a real effort to do better.

But like idk will he? That's the question of the last section of the fic & that's up to him.

Hmm, this one's tough. There's always a lot going on, so I could name sooo many characters. It would be harder to stop naming duos, so I'll choose a few media that have been particularly relevant to my life lately. Just know there are so many more. Every pairing from The Circle of Magic, for a start.

1. Percy de Rolo & Keyleth. I'm writing this while watching the Legend of Vox Machina TV show, so I decided to choose one of them. Ever since the first episode of both the show and the podcast, I enjoyed how these two bring out fun sides of each other. They're close, they love each other, and they relax around each other as they do around very few people. Even with their respective romantic pairings in the show - those are more fraught and intense. Percy and Keyleth always feel like they're having fun when they pair up.

2. Aaron & Andrew Minyard. Man!!! All for the Game has taken up my dash for months now, so I had to choose one pairing. I will choose the twins, because I can. I want them to like each other. I devour any fic I can find about them slowly blossoming their relationship over the post-grad years.

3. Wirt & Greg, from Over the Garden Wall. It's rewatch season! I love these two, and I enjoy the way they are brothers first and always. In particular, my favorite moment is when Greg, who is on the surface level scene more thoughtless and random, actively chooses Wirt over himself. He's offered to escape and chooses uncertainty instead to save Wirt and it's incredible. He is more thoughtful than a surface-level viewing would indicate.

a ship that might surprise others: mmm. Hm. This is hard. I don't really come up with non-canon ships often, and I am generally very normie when I do. I have non-canon hot takes like "Leverage OT3 is awesome" (that's a joke). So I'd say my most "surprising" ship is probably from Fullmetal Alchemist. I am firmly of the opinion that Ed and Winry should break up so she can follow her true love for Paninya, the mechanic girl with two metal legs from the baby episode. THEY ARE MEANT TO BE. Or maybe we can do fun polyamory! Winry has two hands.

last song: Come Out Ye Black and Tans by Colm McGuinness, specifically the rock version. Although I was listening to the regular and rock versions back-to-back on repeat. For Reasons.

last film: KNEECAP. I've listened to the band for a while and LOST IT when I found out they made a biopic and it was playing near me. Somehow I missed all the advertising until I randomly looked at a theater schedule??? Extremely funny being the rap fan in what felt like a room full of people there because of the Sundance win. I was honestly preparing to not like the film because Biopic Drama is not my genre, but oh boy was it not that. It was so fun. I was dancing and singing in my seat.

I loved their laissez-faire approach to whether this is a "true" story and the constant energetic thread their music pulled through the movie. It was a riot. As a bilingual film it felt very natural, clearly informed by people who actually live their lives bilingually - slipping in and out of languages happened logically, and the band walked a fun line between "suck it up and read the subtitles" and "99% of our audience doesn't speak this language or know this particular struggle, let's explain a few things in our own way."

Only thing I didn't like is that it's far more vulgar than I normally enjoy, but you know. I listen to KNEECAP on purpose. I knew what it would be like going in, it would honestly be disappointing if KNEECAP chose to clean themselves up for Hollywood. I actively chose to shut off that part of my brain during viewing, and it was a great time. Just know before choosing to view that the Trainspotting references are earned, and I can give you more detail if you want to go watch.

currently reading: The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. I started it last year but didn't have the spare brainpower for such a complicated story - I got sick of keeping track of the POV swaps. But I did like the worldbuilding, so I eventually picked it back up and it's going much better this time around. For me, this is one of those books that I've been told to read so many times that I knew I would get around to it eventually.

currently watching: Actively on Season 3, Episode 11 of The Legend of Vox Machina TV show. Episode 12 is starting, time to wrap up.

These are... not in any particular order of preference, I will just make question marks for a year if I try to sort them that way, so this is just the order I grabbed the links in. Which means newest to oldest.

1: Roots Grow Up - Naruto (Founders)

I still don't like the title, but I like basically everything else in this fic (including one detail I've decided on but not posted yet so... can't say). I am planning to add more, but the first chapter (which is all that's posted now) stands alone pretty well, since I wasn't sure whether I'd continue it at all when I first posted it.

The premise is that Kawarama didn't die, but instead lost his memory and has been living as a civilian farmer when Hashirama and Tobirama find him, a few years after founding Konoha. 0 people were prepared for this discovery.

Summary:

It's been fifteen years since Isamu was found, badly injured and unconscious in the forest. He woke up with amnesia, but his origin was pretty obvious, so he doesn't even miss the memories. It's been fifteen years. He's grown up, earned a place in the town that took him in, and even gotten married. His not-so-mysterious past doesn't matter. Not until shinobi wander into town, anyway.

2: Blessed Sacrifice AU - Naruto (Founders)

Cowritten with @codedredalert aka @denialcity, on hiatus while we both deal with Life, but there's a large and excellent chunk up already and so many cool things planned. So many!!!

Also, turns out I REALLY LIKE cowriting. Which is kind of old news because I've been doing forum RP for a decade+, but I wasn't sure if that would translate to fic. Turns out the answer is definitely yes.

BSAU is basically taking the "red eyes blessed" trope and digging into the like... worldbuilding repercussions of that, as shown through Izuna. And also crows.

Also comes with LOTS of fantastic art from Red!

Summary:

Mythology-religion freeform AU where Tobirama is considered blessed by the gods by the Uchiha, but they still need to deal with him as an enemy, so Izuna is ritually disowned from the Uchiha and given a special role responsible for protecting/fighting him.

3: Somebody Else's Dream - Girl Genius

Written as a gift for khilari! I can't remember what the exact prompt was, but I ended up writing an elaboration on the canon detail that Mechanicsburg was founded when a Heterodyne decided he wanted a town, so he just had his people build one.

The main character is an OC who was kidnapped to become a non-military member of the town, and the story is about how he ends up settling in. It's a very weird balance of a "finding your place in the world" story and "this is still kidnapping actually," and I don't think it would work in most fandoms, but since Girl Genius canon is a perpetual balance of heartwarming and "wow that is somehow worse than a war crime" already, I think it worked out really well, and I'm still very proud of it.

Also I suffered over the accents in this. But it worked!

Summary:

Faustus Heterodyne wants civilians for his newly built town. What the civilians want is generally different.

4: Jager Search - Girl Genius

Also written as a gift, this time for sparkagatha. It's the future, *vague handwave* everything is resolved, the OT3 are together and Klaus has accepted that he can leave Agatha alone and the revenants are being cured, happily ever after.

...except that some of the "wild" jagers are still missing. So Agatha sets out to find them.

Not much to say really; I can see spots where I'd write it differently if I wrote it now, but that's mostly things like "would have slightly changed the characterization," not big issues, and overall it still holds up very well for being... close to eight years old.

Summary:

Most of the detached jägers heard of the Heterodyne's return and came home, but a few are still missing. Agatha learns this, and decides to fix it.

5: Didn't Dream This - Death Note

Oh if I wrote this now tumblr would annihilate me. ~Problematic~ yay!

I'm not sure I'd say this is a good fic--if I was writing it now I'd write it so differently that it just would be a different fic--but I was clearly working out something about sexuality and relationships and the stuff (not) in my head that I've ended up labeling "being aro."

Basically: Mello and Matt are straight, and they decide to be together anyway. I'm glad I wrote it, partly because I know I wouldn't think or dare to write it now.

Summary:

Mello doesn't want to die alone. Solutions can exist without working out the way anyone wants. (Psychologically intimate interaction is really a better description than romance.)

It happened like clockwork. Like my libido was on a fucking timer. When had I become so predictable? The snap of my briefcase rang out in my empty office, a satisfying thunk that felt like closing a chapter. Every time, I told myself it would be the last time.

And then, the ache in my gut would start. It would grow unbearable, and I’d find myself here. Sitting in my office after dark, long after I’d sent everyone home. Staring at my phone. Typing and deleting a dozen texts, all variations on a theme:

U Busy?

U free tonight?

I used the abbreviation for ‘you’ mostly to annoy Gideon. I texted instead of calling mostly to annoy Gideon. I did a lot of things to annoy Gideon.

Annoying him was safer, safer than letting myself really want him. Because, if I was going to be a slave to my urges, I wasn’t going to be miserable alone. I would dig my fingers into the lingering bruise of our semi-regular hookups so Gideon was just as full of self-loathing as I was.

I was pretty sure Gideon hated me.

I was pretty sure I needed Gideon to hate me, because the alternative was even more painful, because hate was at least something, something deep, fiery and primal.

And, we dragon shifters were nothing if not deep, fiery and primal.

The place between my shoulder blades itched, my human skin wearing thin and tight like an ill-fitting suit. I unbuttoned the collar of my shirt, as if that would help. The urge to shift always rose with my desire to see Gideon. At his place, I could wear the skin of my ancient fauna. I could stretch my wings, the bones in my jaw and skull expanding to accommodate fangs and horns and the armored plates that rand down my vertebrae. Gideon would shift, too. And in our dragon forms, we’d fight. Then we’d shift back, and we’d fuck. The sparring was foreplay, brutal and animalistic. One of these times, I always thought, Gideon and I really might kill each other.

It was the same every time, a constant, but goddamn it if it every time wasn’t the highlight of my life.

Gideon and I had met at a farmers’ market six years ago. A real bougie meet-cute right out of a gay hallmark movie. The small-town farmer and the big city executive. I’d been passing through town on the way to visit my parents, and I stopped to get a pressed juice and a pastry, and some flowers for my mother. And there was Gideon, standing at his little farm stand, haloed in an explosion of color, dozens of flower arrangements and elegant bouquets. He was huge and rugged. Scowling. Beautiful. Putting all the flowers to shame.

I approached with caution, because I could tell he saw me immediately for what I was, just as I recognized him. I looked into his icy blue eyes and saw the beast beneath.

For a several moments, we’d just stared at each other.

I bought some flowers. He gave me his card.

It took me three weeks to work up the courage to call him.

We met for a drink, despite the fact that we both knew we’d never work. It was just my luck—the only other ancient shifter in a hundred miles, and he wasn’t mine.

And I wasn’t his.

That was the thing with ancients. Our power came with a lot of rules, many of which didn’t have much bearing on modern life, except the first, and the biggest. Each shifter born with an ancient fauna only had one mate. A true mate.

It was something you just knew, deep in your bones, deep in your soul, when you saw them. It was an instant, undeniable attraction. Fate. Destiny. Blah blah blah. My parents could—and often did—wax endlessly poetic about the day they’d met. Their story was sweet enough to turn anyone into an instant diabetic

As hot and infuriating and toe-curling in the sack as Gideon was, he wasn’t mine. He wasn’t my destiny. I’d mostly given up on finding my true mate, and I imagined Gideon probably felt the same. We could never have that kind of soul-deep pair bond between us that would allow us to be truly complete. Truly settled. Whole.

But we could absolutely get together from time to time and fuck each other’s brains out. It took the edge off being so goddamn lonely. Kinda. With a resigned sigh, I looked down at the screen of my phone, brushing my thumb over it, like maybe I could feel my way to a better solution.

So uh... I’ve been writing?

In other news, my attempt at some self-indulgent Tom Paris whump has turned into a beast of a Tom/B’Elanna/Harry pre-OT3 establishing relationship fic. It has taken over my brain and now involves mutual pining and a lot of ~Feelings~ apparently.

This is an overview that I made myself to get some idea of what I had so far, and it’s 36k words long already??? I don’t even know how much farther I am going to take it, so that feels insane. I don’t even have any kind of “Ending” planned because this wasn’t supposed to be a relationship fic and now it is. I have a few ideas where I want to have some things happen, but this is wildly beyond my usual comfort zone, so who knows if it will ever reach the light of day.

(Also apparently I am not so great at writing Harry’s third-person POV because I seem to keep defaulting to B’Elanna’s instead. Oops.)

As on AO3, I'm AzureFishnets and thank you for joining me in this exchange, despite the loss of Chocobox for this year. I think it's going to be fun and I am happy with art or writing or any other medium you want to try. I think it's worth noting that I love these weirdo & pairings with all my heart; I have a few shippy prompts in here but mostly I love to see people just...being human with each other, whether in art or fiction. Emma & Jowd - I'm torn between two prompts on this so have both: Emma tries to verify her suspicions of what happened with a call to Prisoner D-99 OR New timeline Emma attempts to schmooze with Jowd at a party, but Jowd is unschmoozable while simultaneously being schmooze incarnate. How does he do that?

Emma & Alma - Did Alma and Emma ever cross paths in the old timeline? What's their fated non-meeting like?

Emma & Cabanela - New timeline Emma has somehow gotten herself into the situation of needing to infiltrate a political party with Sith and Cabanela is her guiding voice via an earpiece (with optional Sissel?)

Cabanela & Jowd & Sissel - I'm just super taken with thoughts of case fic where Cabanela knows the cat's deal but still can't speak to him; bonus points for undercover work where they all have to pretend they don't know each other.

Alma & Pigeon Man - Alma would like to thank the mysterious Pigeon Man for his efforts on Jowd's behalf but she doesn't know what he knows. Or even how much she does.

Lovey-Dove & Pigeon Man - Lovey is a grumpy dove one day and Pigeon Man is somewhat bewildered as to why

Jowd & Kamila - Jowd introduces a small Kamila to roast chicken and is rather bemused by her reaction

Ries / or & Kevin - I like Ries best when she's being fierce and I like Kevin best when he's taken off guard by that ferocity. Any moment like that please! Free to make as shippy or unshippy as you like.

Olivier & Kloe - I've got a hankering to see royal scheming. Kloe's so sly with her humor but I feel like these two are a better match as friends than it appears.

Lila/Maybelle - I just think they're cute OK. Anytime they can gently and mutually bully each other into spending time doing something restful is good. Or maaaaybe good ol' sickfic.

Celeste & Kloe - You cannot tell me that academic Kloe does not immediately want to grill her not-ancestor for everything she's worth. Celeste, on the other hand, would like to know more about current day Liberl, especially Kloe's relationship with Alicia...

Kloe & Julia - Kloe and Julia go hawking with Sieg as a training and bonding trip

Estelle & Kloe - I love the FC play so much. Any missing moment there would be great! Or moments in Phantasma: mutual comfort, mutual teasing... OR Kloe allowing Estelle to captain the Arseille for five whole minutes just to see what would happen.

1— Shadowheart's tag: If you have others in the party when you first meet Astarion, and don't perceive his attack coming, Shadowheart will tell him, "I need her alive—stow that blade or I'll show you just how messy things can get."

2— Gale's tag: If you talk to other party members after Raphael's offer, Gale ultimately concludes, "Devils aren't known to aid mortals out of simple kindness. Whatever Raphael wants, we must be the key to getting it. Along with our tadpoles ... So I say for now—we wait. If I'm right, Raphael will seek us out again. And when he does, there's a mighty bargain to be made."

3— Mystra's tag: During the channelling of the Weave scene with Gale, he tells you to picture the concept of harmony as truly as you can. As a cleric of Mystra, you get this option: Focus on Mystra's grace. Her power. The peace you find in following her wisdom.

4— Karlach's tag: when you recruit Karlach, you can bring up Wyll's pursuit, and she'll say, "Ugh. Thought I'd lost the Blade of Frontiers on the mind flayer ship. Well, if it isn't obvious by now, he's wrong about me. I'll prove it to him if he stops swinging that sword around long enough to listen to sense. Now that we're old pals, how would you feel about helping me kill some evil bastards?"

5— Lae'zel's tag: When you rescue Lae'zel from the trap, you can suggest she might at least thank you. She contemptuously says, "You may as well suggest a wyvern bow to worms. The cure I offer will suffice as thanks."

6— Wyll's tag: When you're first talking with Wyll in the grove, there's a chance to succeed on a history check and identify what he means by advocatus diaboli. You can then respond, "Do you think she'll bring the Blood War to Faerûn?" Wyll replies, "That ship's sailed the Styx already. All I can hope for's to limit the damage."

8— Gale/Larissa/Mystra tag: I called my fic for this "the worst OT3" because Gale's channelling the Weave scene with a cleric of Mystra is hilariously shippy in every direction yet so, so doomed. As said cleric, you can go through with focusing on Mystra's grace, power, and wisdom, and then sense "the unmistakable presence of Mystra, the Lady of Mysteries. There's something like the anticipation of a kiss, then the pleasure of being cloaked in peace. You are safe. You are nestled in the cup of Mystra's hand." The cleric can then respond, "It's not quite like praying to her. She feels closer, somehow." Gale says, "Quite so. The Weave is a sensitive conduit." 👀

9— Shadowheart/Karlach tag: After Karlach's introduction, one of your party members will comment on her inclusion in the group. Usually it seems to be Gale remarking that Karlach is a little rough around the edges, but he's smooth enough for two (lol), but in this game, it was Shadowheart, who said, "I like her. She looks like she could throw me over her shoulder and carry me to safety ..... should the need arise." 👀👀

Okay, I am being careful here and only recommending completed fics – I do have some that are ongoing but I hesitate to rec anything that isn't finished. I'm also not giving all my bookmarked fics, just some of them, otherwise we'd be here all day. For all of these, I am going to stress that you should mind the tags for these fics because my tastes tend to run violent.

STEDDYHANDS - Stede/Ed/Izzy

A Pirate Triptych by ewelinakl: Hands down my favorite fic in this fandom, of all time, a fucking SAGA that's intricately plotted and emotional and SO WELL WRITTEN, FUCK.

Luck of the Devil by @itsclydebitches: A fic that was written in response to a prompt of mine on the kink meme (which was "we need more near-drowning whump this is a disgrace") and absolutely knocked it out of the fucking park. Actually, while we're at it, let's just say "anything of Clyde's is a fucking banger" and leave it at that.

Above All Else by kaelleid - Another fic for a prompt of mine (which was "have Izzy sacrifice himself, maybe an 'I'm Spartacus' thing?"), this one also fucking excellent.

x marks the spot by @second-hand-heaven: The fic that got me invested in this ship in the first place (it's Nova's fault that I am this unhinged) plus another fic that's more a prequel.

i don't know anything (but i know i miss you) by @andillwriteyouatragedy: Made me cry actual literal tears, even during rereads, and that is extremely rare for a fic. They're also just an excellent author and everything they post is brilliant, but I'm gonna give a second shout-out to through quaking, through crazy because 1) unhinged Stede gives me life and 2) it somehow manages to have the OT3 without actually having it.

O happy living things by tiptory: I think this might be the first fic I ever read in this fandom, period, but even if it's not, it's really, really good. Love me that anxiety shit.

i'd talk with the devil but i wouldn't know what to say by anirondack: Ed/Izzy, but the main draw of it for me is the whole developing-Blackbeard-the-myth as backstory. It's AMAZING.

I rambled in the tags So Damn Much that I actually hit the tag limit before even getting to the fandom and character tags so I’m just gonna copy and paste that here instead.

Anevka is living her best life. #so she obviously ‘accidentally’ lets slip that she’s Tarvek’s sister and she sets Gil on his quest #(I can’t decide if seffie has been read in on the plan or if Anevka has to comically dodge her the entire time she’s in Paris but Martellus #cannot fucking tell that there’s anything wrong here) #ANYWAY. Gil sets out to Save Tarvek!!!! he’s possibly been lead to believe that his childhood best friend (crush but shh he doesn’t know #that yet) is in more imminent danger than he really is. Gil runs into Agatha on the way and probably saves her from some danger and she gets #roped into his quest by accident. her locket gets damaged somehow and on the way she breaks through. many death rays are made. #so Tarvek is just busy building clanks in his tower. refining his knowledge of the muses. getting kind of bored waiting for the future ruler #of Europa that he’s either going to seduce or kill (he hasn’t decided yet. maybe both) and then fucking GILGAMESH HOLZFALLER SHOWS UP???? #and Tarvek is like. of course. of course he has to play the hero So Damn Bad that he’s going to mess up this entire plan. but oh? who is #that lovely girl with him holding such a beautiful death ray??? obviously she’s the one the prophecy is referring to. she’s already shown #herself to be more competent than holzfaller. #Gil is offended like EXCUSE YOU. CAN I LOOK AT YOUR MUSE?????? #Agatha is the only one here with her priorities straight. #anyway the five of them (ot3 plus tinka and violetta) set out to like. ostensibly return Tarvek to his family. but instead they go on #WACKY HIJINKS. they run into the circus! they join the circus! they reunite tinka and moxana! they steal Zeetha from the circus! they dodge #the jagers that Klaus has sent to retrieve Gil once he gets wind that he’s not in Paris!! they add jagers to their party! like. a lot of #jagers for some reason? why do they all want to go with us? #‘should we tell them she’s the heterodyne?’ oggie whispers. ‘she must be keeping it a secret for a reason’ maxim answers. this is wrong. #Agatha has no idea what’s going on. #once THAT comes out their destination changes to Mechanicsburg and they fix the castle and Klaus finally personally comes down to confront #his wayward son and that’s when GILS revelation comes out and then Klaus catches sight of Zeetha and they have a conversation in skifanderin #and THAT ends in Zeetha going ‘DAD???!!!’ #and someone (Krosp probably. he needs to be there) is like. unbelievable. does ANYONE ELSE have surprise royal heritage???? #Tarvek is like. well ok you have to promise not to get mad.
