CHAPTER THREE: FAMILIAR FACES

The insistent chirping of her alarm clock shattered Samantha's peaceful slumber. Groaning, she swatted at her phone, silencing its obnoxious tune. Today was her and Katherine's first day of High School. The word itself felt heavy, a looming presence casting a long shadow over her summer break. However, after her eyes adjusted to the sun creeping from her blinds, she quickly jumped back into her routine as if it were second nature.

Across the hall, however, Katherine snoozed her alarm but laid motionless, burrowing her face under her pillows, hiding from the sunlight. Almost as if predicting her cousin's behavior, Samantha barged into her bedroom and sighed in exasperation. "Come on, sleepyhead," Samantha chirped, pulling the comforter off of her cousin in determination. Katherine groaned, burying her face deeper into the pillow. "Five more minutes, please. " She mumbled, her voice muffled.

Samantha shook her head, a gentle but firm hand on Katherine's shoulder. "Not a chance. We're going to be late." With a dramatic sigh, Katherine finally emerged from her blanket cocoon, blinking against the sudden light. "Sometimes I think you're actually a vampire." Not having sufficient effort Katherine settled on giving Samantha her middle finger, before sluggishly trudging to the bathroom. That's when the chaos commenced.

Katherine's mind, although still half-asleep, began to race, a whirlwind of anxieties and self-doubt taking over. After what seemed like eternity of digging through Samantha's closet and her minimal clothing, Katherine finally emerged from her room, her hair and makeup expertly done by Samantha. Heading downstairs for breakfast, both girls were greeted by a smiling Daniel and Amanda, who each held a cappuccino in their hands. Samantha, ever the attentive cousin, pushed a cup of coffee towards Katherine.

"You look like you need this," She teased, laughing at her cousin's weary expression. "Do I really look that bad?" Katherine asked, taking a sip of her coffee, the warmth spreading through her as it hit the spot perfectly and instantly made her feel more awake. "You look dead, Kat." Anthony remarked from across the table, his eyes glued to his iPad. "Thanks, Tony," Katherine retorted dryly, rolling her eyes. "Really helpful." Daniel rolled his eyes, a familiar expression crossing his face, as he turned to the girls.

"You two ready for school?" Samantha nodded eagerly, bumping shoulders with her cousin. "Ready as I'll ever be," She declared, her voice brimming with excitement. Katherine, despite the caffeine coursing through her veins, still felt a flutter of nerves. "Sure," She replied, trying to sound nonchalant. "Alright then, you two better get going," Daniel urged, checking his watch. "Don't want to be late on your first day." Both girls gathered their backpacks, exchanging a quick glance. Amanda and Daniel gave them each a warm hug, whispering words of encouragement.

Katherine knew she should have jumped out of the car when she had the chance. Or at least she could have pretended to be ill. The drive to All Valley High School felt agonizingly short. Katherine, despite her best efforts, couldn't shake off the nervous jitters. Luckily, Samantha was none the wiser. "Need help finding your way around?" Samantha asked, as they stepped out of the car. Katherine flinched, the stares of the other students burning into her skin. She forced a weak smile. "No, I think I'll be fine. Let's just meet at your locker after class?" Samantha nodded, her smile fading slightly as she noticed Katherine's discomfort.

"Okay. See you later!" With a wave, Samantha disappeared into the sea of students, leaving Katherine alone to face her dread. Taking a shaky breath, she pushed open the heavy glass doors of the main office. The fluorescent lights seemed to hum with an unnatural intensity. "Get a grip, Katherine." She whispered to herself putting on her best fake smile. "Hi, I'm Katherine LaRusso," She managed to say, her voice trembling slightly. "Here to pick up my schedule." The woman behind the desk, smiled warmly. "Of course, dear. Here you go." She handed Katherine a neatly folded sheet of paper.

Giving the woman one last nervous smile, Katherine walked out of the front office and released the breath she was holding. "Glad to know I'm not the only new student." Katherine turned to see a tall boy with a mop of dark hair leaning against the lockers, a nervous grin playing on his lips. Relief washed over her at least all the attention wouldn't be all on her. "Me neither," She replied, a genuine smile finally gracing her lips. "I'm Katherine." He extended a hand, his grip firm but not too strong. "Miguel. Nice to meet you, Katherine."

Both teenagers suddenly fell into conversation as well as comparing schedules. After a few more minutes of getting to know each other, they parted ways, heading off to their respective classrooms. Katherine quickly texted Samantha the location of her locker, then busied herself gathering her textbooks. "There you are," Samantha's voice cut her off as she slammed her locker shut. Noticing Yasmine and Moon were by her side, Katherine quickly plastered a fake smile on her face. "So, what class do you have first?" Moon asked, her voice a little too bright, yet somewhat comforting.

"Oh, uh, AP English. I saw the classroom down the hall." Yasmine nodded, her voice dripping with feigned sympathy. "Bummer. We all have Calculus first. Guess we won't see you until lunch." Katherine had to bit back her words upon listening to Yasmine's poor attempt of mocked sympathy. Sensing the tension Samantha leaned forward and placed a reassuring hand on her cousin's shoulder. "You've got this," She assured giving Katherine's bicep a squeeze. "We'll see you later." As Katherine watched them go, she took a deep breath.

With one last internal pep-talk, she entered the English classroom, choosing a seat near the middle, hoping to blend in with the other students. "Not so bad," She muttered to herself, trying to convince herself that she could in fact, survive the day. "Just a few more hours. How hard could it be?" Famous last words. The classroom clock seemed to mock her, the hours crawled by, each minute an eternity. Finally, as the shrill sound of the final bell echoed through the halls, Katherine let out a long, weary sigh.

After gathering her belongings, she navigated through the sea of students pouring out of the classrooms. Eventually, she reached the cafeteria, the array of voices and the clattering of trays created a symphony of overstimulation that made her head spin. Near the window, she noticed that Samantha, Yasmine, and Moon were already seated. Katherine felt a sinking feeling in her stomach as she realized she had no choice but to approach them. It was either that, or sit alone. Swallowing her pride, she clutched her lunch tray tightly and walked over.

"Oh my God, you guys!" She heard Yasmine exclaim, her eyes wide with amusement. Katherine watched as she jabbed a manicured finger towards a table across the cafeteria. "See that guy over there, who looks like he went down on a lawnmower?He's literally wearing the ugliest sweater I've ever seen in my entire life." Samantha and Moon erupted in giggles, Katherine, however, felt a knot of unease tighten in her stomach. Her gaze drifted towards the table Yasmine had pointed out. There, amidst a group of boisterous boys, sat Miguel, the boy she'd met earlier. Alongside him, sat a lanky boy with dark hair who seemed to be rambling nervously.

However, it was the boy with brown hair, falling across his forehead, and prominent scar that slashed across his top lip that stood out. Suddenly, a wave of recognition washed over her. Unable to bear listening to Yasmine's snide commentary any longer, Katherine abruptly turned on her heel and headed towards the table where the boys were sitting. "I don't care if Yasmine is the meanest girl at school. I'd kill both of you just to get her to spit in my face." She overheard the boy with the darker hair declare, which in turn made her let out a chuckle.

He was clearly exaggerating, but the sheer absurdity of his statement was undeniably funny. Pulling up a chair, she slid into the empty space between Miguel and the boy Yasmine had been making fun of, who was staring at her in stunned silence. "Oh hey, what's up, Katherine?" Miguel greeted her with a warm smile. Katherine returned the smile, feeling a wave of relief wash over her. She noticed the dark haired lanky boy staring at her with wide eyes. His jaw hung slightly open, his eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and something she couldn't quite decipher. "Hi, I'm Katherine, but you can call me Kat, I just moved here." She introduced herself, offering a warm smile to both boys.

"Demetri," The darker-haired boy replied, his voice a low nervous rumble. Katherine's eyes shifted towards the only person who hadn't spoken yet. He was avoiding eye contact, his gaze fixed on the table, his jaw clenched. Katherine couldn't help but smile at his almost comical attempt to appear nonchalant. Deciding to take matters into her own hands, she smiled directly at him. "Hi, Eli." Demetri and Miguel exchanged a startled glance, their eyes widening in surprise. Katherine, however, remained unfazed. Finally picking his head up, Eli met her eyes, confusion swirling in them.

"Oh come on," She huffed playfully. "For someone who says they can spot a Twilight fanatic from a mile away, you really do suck at it. I haven't changed that much now, have I?" The gears in his mind seemed to click into place. Recognition dawned on his face, a slow, smile spreading across his lips. "Kat?" He breathed, his voice hoarse with disbelief. As soon as she nodded, he didn't hesitate. In a swift move, he pulled her into a hug, the warmth of his body radiating through her. Katherine was startled for a moment but nonetheless returned the hug, burying her face in his shoulder.

After a moment, they broke apart, both of them grinning like idiots, their shared laughter a stark contrast to the hushed murmurs that had erupted around them. "Care to explain what's going on here?" Demetri finally asked, his voice laced with curiosity. "This is Kat," Eli explained to Demetri, his voice still laced with disbelief. "Remember the best friend I told you about? The one who moved to Europe when we were six, we kept in touch, you know through letters, emails, the occasional video call." He gestured towards Katherine with a wide grin, his eyes sparkling with excitement.

Demetri, who was still reeling from the unexpected reunion, could only blink at them both, his jaw slack. "Wait, wait, this is Katherine?!" He stammered, his voice rising in disbelief. "Your childhood best friend who's also a huge Twilight nerd?"Eli and Katherine nodded in unison, their smiles mirroring each other perfectly. "Newsflash," Demetri declared, a mischievous glint in his eye, "She's way too hot to be a nerd and be your best friend." Katherine scoffed, a playful roll of her eyes.

"Well, I'd honestly rather hang out with you three than those… those… bitches over there," She muttered, the word 'bitches' barely a whisper, but laced with enough disdain to make Eli and Miguel chuckle. "And one of them who is the exception, just so happens to be my cousin," She added, a wry smile playing on her lips. Her words instantly caught Miguel's attention. "Samantha LaRusso is your cousin?" He asked, his eyes widening slightly. Katherine nodded, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Yup, crazy, right?" She laughed, leaning back in her chair. She noticed Miguel's jaw tighten, his brow furrowing as he seemed to be mentally debating something.

When he abruptly stood up, Katherine had a pretty good idea of what he was about to do. "What are you doing?" Demetri asked, his voice laced with a mixture of amusement and apprehension. "Striking first," Miguel declared, a determined glint in his eyes. Katherine raised an eyebrow. "Oh, shit," Demetri added, a nervous mutter escaping his lips. "I hope we don't get hit with the shrapnel." Katherine and Eli exchanged a knowing look. "Do you think he'll get somewhere?" Eli asked, leaning closer to Katherine, his eyes fixed on Miguel as he navigated the crowded cafeteria.

"No idea," Katherine admitted, "But I'll give him points, he's definitely ballsy." As Miguel approached Samantha's table, a figure emerged. Kyler, who was known as the 'king' of the school', knelt beside Samantha's chair, his arm casually draped around her shoulders. He flashed a cocky smirk at Miguel, a silent challenge that sent a shiver down Katherine's spine. "What's up, ladies?" Kyler drawled, his voice dripping with a smug confidence that grated on Katherine's nerves. She knew there was a reason to why she did not like him.

Sighing in defeat, Katherine noticed Miguel exchange a frustrated glance with Kyler before turning back to their table. "See you later, 'Rhea." She heard Kyler drawl mockingly, his voice dripping with a smug satisfaction that made Katherine's blood boil. Miguel slumped back into his chair, the air around him radiating with frustration. "So," Demetri teased, a mischievous glint in his eye, "How'd it go?" Miguel rolled his eyes, a humorless chuckle escaping him. "Just drop it, dude." Katherine scoffed determined to change the subject. Luckily, Demetri still had questions she was happy to answer.

Do you have any kids?

Shelby!Eva: four, two sons, Charles and Gabriel, and two daughters, Diane and Florence.

After living the horrors all my life and being cursed with magic, scary movies don't scare me anymore. I like happy endings mainly because we so often don't get them in life and one of my husbands(Tommy) has melancholia(depression)

Where were you born?

The Vatican, my mother wanted to win 10 thousand pesos(about 370,000 american dollars in modern days)from her sister by forcing the current and next pope to baptize me so I can claim sainthood when I die. Her waters broke under God's Creation of Eve, and i was born in an ambulance outside the Sistine Chapel.

It Takes a Hotel to Raise a Cub

Chapter 2 - Sneaking Out

Plot: Today’s redemption exercise brings back horrible memories for Crymini.

Content Warning: Religious trauma, injury, blood

“Today’s redemption exercise is a classic! We’re going to be doing a scavenger hunt!” Charlie cheerfully announced to the residents in the lobby.

Crymini groaned internally as Vaggie passed out colored pieces of paper to everyone. A scavenger hunt? Couldn’t Charlie have chosen something that wasn’t so… juvenile? Hell, why did Charlie have to make everyone do these fucking challenges?

“You guys will be split into two groups and the team with the items found first wins! So, if you have an orange piece of paper, go in front of the bar with me and Vaggie. If your piece of paper is pink, go stand in the lounge area.”

Crymini looked down at her paper. It was pink. She looked at the paper more and rolled her eyes. The instructions were stupid and childish.

Find something that is blue. Find something that holds clothes inside.

Crymini crumbled up her paper and crammed it in her hoodie pocket as she trudged over to her group.

In the kitchen, Crymini sat by herself while the rest of her group searched for three items on their list, which were the following: a utensil you cook with, something that keeps your food cold, and something that heats up food.

“Hey, you feeling okay?” Rebecca, a meerkat demon, asked.

“I’m fine,” Crymini said bluntly.

“How come you’re not joining in on the fun?” Husk asked.

Crymini shrugged as she pulled out her phone and began scrolling through social media. Rebecca and Husk walked away as the hyena continued viewing her phone. She looked back up at the group after a few seconds. They looked like they were having a lot of fun. Crymini huffed at this. She felt so out of place. This was all completely déjà vu for her, familiar feelings that she can’t shake off. This all reminded her of her church life in the living world.

Katherine - Age Seven

Katherine was seven, and she was with a group of children her age during Vacation Bible School. Her mom, Judy, was one of the main teachers during this summer event, even way before Katherine was born, so of course she had to go. Katherine felt out of place, however. She didn’t fully understand anything about church. She didn’t like nor comprehend the songs the worship leaders were teaching the kids to sing. She didn’t understand about God nor the stories in the Bible. Why did Jesus have to die? Why did he rise from the dead three days later, when that’s actually impossible on Earth? Why wasn’t anyone questioning this?

During snack time, Katherine was sitting next to a girl named Amanda. She decided to ask about something that was running through her mind for a while.

“Hey, Amanda, why do the teachers teach us so much about Jesus?” Katherine questioned.

“Because He died for our sins,” Amanda responded.

“I know, but why are we being taught this?”

“Because the teachers know about the good news and want to share it with us, and they want us to share it with everyone around us.”

“Yeah, but… none of this feels right. I mean, if God knew that Jesus was gonna die, why didn’t He stop it from happening? Why did He know that Adam and Eve were going to eat from a tree when He told them not to? I think God just made a bunch of mistakes, if you ask me.”

Amanda’s cheerful face fell silent. Tears formed in her eyes and she started to cry. The rest of the group heard her crying and stared at Katherine, who was just as stunned.

“What did you do?” One of the kids, Jackson, glared.

“I just asked a bunch of questions,” Katherine said. “I didn’t mean for Amanda to get upset.”

“Woah, woah, woah! What’s going on here?” Patty, a VBS volunteer, asked as she walked over to the table.

“Kathy was saying mean stuff about God,” Amanda sobbed as she pointed at Katherine.

“What? I was just being honest, I wasn’t trying to be mean,” Katherine defended.

“Wait for me in the hallway, now,” Patty ordered.

“But I wasn’t-”

“Now!”

Katherine groaned as she got up and walked out. Once she reached the hallway, she leaned against the wall as she crossed her arms. Her stomach twisted in knots and she felt like crying herself.

“Why did you say to Amanda that God made mistakes?” Patty asked angrily after walking out of the room.

“I don’t understand any of this Bible stuff. It makes no sense,” Katherine stated. “How does anyone understand it?”

“That doesn’t give you the right to be disrespectful.”

“I wasn’t being disrespectful, I-”

“I think you need to go see your mother.”

“No, please! I can’t go see Mother!” Katherine pleaded.

“Yes, you can. Come with me,” Patty said as she took Katherine by the hand and took her to talk with her mom.

💭 ————————— 💭

Crymini snapped back to reality when Husk tapped her on the shoulder.

“Hey, are you alright?” Husk asked.

“Okay, can you stop asking me that?” Crymini snarled. “It’s none of your business.”

Husk sighed heavily.

“You know you can talk to me whenever you feel ready.“

“Because you’re the bartender that everyone bitches to?” Crymini retorted.

“Yes, but I know that you can’t just hide what you’re feeling. It’s not healthy for you to do that,” Husk pointed out.

“Whatever…”

“Well, we better get going and meet up with our team.”

“Yeah, sure. I gotta pee, though.”

“Alright, just head over the greenhouse when you get done. That’s where our team is,” Husk said as he walked out of the kitchen. Crymini shortly followed and started to go upstairs. However, she decided she had enough of all of this. She walked over to the empty bar and went behind the bar counter. She then grabbed a bottle of vodka before walking out of the hotel.

After finding a rare plant in the greenhouse, the pink team began looking in the library to look for some books since they were on the list. Rebecca looked around the room and saw that Crymini wasn’t present.

“Hey, has anyone seen Crymini?” she asked.

“I don’t know. Maybe she’s still in the kitchen,” Lucifer suggested.

“What’s going on?” Husk asked.

“Crymini’s not here,” Rebecca explained.

“She had to pee. I told her to come over here when she’s finished.”

“But it’s been over ten minutes, though.”

“It has?”

Husk looked down at his phone and saw that it had been ten minutes. He then checked his messages and saw that Crymini hasn’t responded to the messages he sent of where the pink team was.

“Shit… I’ll go see if Crymini’s okay,” Husk volunteered. “You guys keep doing the scavenger hunt.”

Husk walked out of the library. He then headed over to Crymini’s room and knocked on the door.

“Hey, Crymini, everything okay in there?” Husk asked. No response. “Kid?”

The cat opened the door to see that Crymini’s room was empty. He then saw that the bathroom door was open and the lights were off in there.

“Kid?”

Husk walked over to the bathroom and turned on the lights. There was no sign of Crymini anywhere.

“Oh, shit…”

Husk headed downstairs and searched around the lobby and the lounge. Nope, no Crymini here. He looked in the kitchen, but Crymini wasn’t there either - only Angel, Charlie, Vaggie, and the orange team.

“Hey, Whiskers, is everything okay?” Angel asked.

“No, I can’t find Crymini anywhere? She must have left our team,” Husk said. “Have you seen her?”

“No, but we’ll keep an eye out.”

“Wait, Crymini’s missing?” Charlie questioned. “Where’d she go?”

“I don’t know, she said she had to use the bathroom, but she wasn’t in there,” Husk replied.

Some of the sinners overheard the conversation and started to worry.

“Okay, let’s not panic. I’m sure Crymini didn’t go far off,” Vaggie reassured. “Alright, everyone, new scavenger hunt. Let’s all split up and see if she’s around here in the hotel. I’ll go alert the pink team.”

And everyone was off.

Meanwhile, Crymini was sitting in front of the memorial statue of Dazzle, drinking from the vodka bottle she stole. She started reminiscing on her friendship with Raven and Ash. They were misfits who had their own fair share of trauma in the living world and in Hell, so they would help each other and Crymini feel at home, a genuine feeling that she hadn’t felt in a long time.

“Here’s to you, guys. I wish you were here with me,” Crymini sighed. “You helped me forget every shitty thing that has happend to me.”

Crymini began to take another swig of vodka, when suddenly, a familiar deep baritone voice called out, “Crymini?”

The hyena jumped and accidentally dropped the glass bottle on the ground, causing it to break into tiny pieces.

“Oh, fuck!” Crymini gasped as she panicked and proceeded to try and pick up the broken pieces. However, when she grabbed a piece of glass, she accidentally cut her paw. “Ow, fuck!”

“Crymini, what happened?” Husk questioned as he ran by and saw Crymini clutching her bleeding hand.

“It’s nothing,” Crymini denied as she painfully sucked air through her teeth.

“It doesn’t look like nothing. We gotta get you patched up.”

“No way. I’m fine.”

“Bullshit. I’m taking you to the infirmary.”

“The fuck you are.”

Crymini started to run off, but Husk caught her in time and began guiding her back inside the hotel.

“Okay, this isn’t fucking funny anymore,” Crymini seethed with growing rage and began squirming in to try and break away, like a criminal trying to escape being handcuffed by a cop. “Quit acting like you’re my fucking dad and let me go!”

“No, you need help,” Husk responded.

“I don’t need your fucking help! I don’t need anyone’s help!”

“Hey, you found Crymini,” Angel sighed with relief as he ran over to Husk and Crymini.

“Yeah, can you help me?” Husk requested. “Crymini’s hurt and-“

“I don’t need any help, so leave me alone!” Crymini shrieked, causing Husk and Angel to fall silent. “Yeah, go ahead and fucking look at me! Why don’t you go ahead and piss off? I’m okay and I’ve been through a lot worse! This is nothing new!”

Husk and Angel stared at Crymini, then at each other. They were both in shock with the hyena had just said.

Crymini’s wound began to hurt more, causing her to hiss in pain again.

“Come on, we don’t care if you want to or not, but we gotta fix your cut,” Husk said once he internally calmed down.

“Please, no…” Crymini muttered as Angel took off one of his gloves and carefully wrapped it around her cut. He then gently picked her up and held her on his hip. She could feel tears beginning to pour out of her eyes as she whimpered from the pain she was in.

"It's okay, Crymini. We're gonna get you fixed up," Angel whispered as he rubbed Crymini's back and carried her back inside the hotel.

Alicia (Erana James, new zealand actress). Her as Toni Shalifoe in the Wilds just embodies Alicia for me.

Amanda (Katherine Heigl, US actress). BUT as Izzie Stevens in Grey's Anatomy. I read DTA before I watched Grey's anatomy. I saw her on screen and I literally screamed so loud because to me it seemed like Amanda came to life.

Ana (christian serratos, US actress). Gorgeous girl, from the moment I read the description of Ana I thought of Rosita from the walking dead.

Amber (can't find anything online about her). Found one picture on pinterest and saw Amber in it.

Christina (Marie Southard Ospina, UK freelance writer).

Evelyn (Yoon Young Bae, South Korean fashion model).

Kat (Tiger Lily, French model). I just love her as Kat. Yes, I know Kat has brown hair and the model has red hair now but you need to see her with brown hair and I just see Kat.

Mel (Jerry Heil, Ukrainian singer). I saw her this year on Eurovision and just KNEW. I almost screamed at my tv. (Also her song Teresa & Maria is fenominal).

Mira (Nia Towle, British actress). There is something so innocent that fits Mira I think. Innocent but capable of kicking a croats head off.

Sarah (Alexandra Daddorio, US actress). You may know her as Annabeth in the failed percy jackson movies, but i see her as Sarah. there is something in her eyes that make me think of Sarah. Especially when she's serious.

Vera (Gina Torres, US actress). As Zoë Washburne in firefly. The first ever fancast I had for DTA. I can't imagine someone else as Vera.

Finally, I've gotten this list all done and typed! Not lying, this took me literal days to finish since I couldn't think of monsters for some girls and kept switching species around! Luckily, the people I've asked say this list is good, which at least gives me some hope that I made the right choices for these characters. I'm not gonna lie, I can't wait to make spec evo bios for these girls and go into the culture and worldbuilding for monster/non-human societies~! And I'm gonna remake my old Bios now that there are more characters and I have some new abilities for them~! But for now, hold on tight, because this AU Revamp is just getting started!
