100 Dialogue Tags You Can Use Instead of “Said”

For the writers struggling to rid themselves of the classic ‘said’. Some are repeated in different categories since they fit multiple ones (but those are counted once so it adds up to 100 new words). 

1. Neutral Tags 

Straightforward and unobtrusive dialogue tags: 

Added, Replied, Stated, Remarked, Responded, Observed, Acknowledged, Commented, Noted, Voiced, Expressed, Shared, Answered, Mentioned, Declared.

2. Questioning Tags 

Curious, interrogative dialogue tags:

Asked, Queried, Wondered, Probed, Inquired, Requested, Pondered, Demanded, Challenged, Interjected, Investigated, Countered, Snapped, Pleaded, Insisted.

3. Emotive Tags 

Emotional dialogue tags:

Exclaimed, Shouted, Sobbed, Whispered, Cried, Hissed, Gasped, Laughed, Screamed, Stammered, Wailed, Murmured, Snarled, Choked, Barked.

4. Descriptive Tags 

Insightful, tonal dialogue tags:

5. Action-Oriented Tags 

Movement-based dialogue tags:

6. Conflict Tags 

Argumentative, defiant dialogue tags:

Shock-inducing dialogue tags:

Note: everyone is entitled to their own opinion. No I am NOT telling people to abandon said and use these. Yes I understand that said is often good enough, but sometimes you WANT to draw attention to how the character is speaking. If you think adding an action/movement to your dialogue is 'good enough' hate to break it to you but that ruins immersion much more than a casual 'mumbled'. And for the last time: this is just a resource list, CALM DOWN. Hope that covers all the annoyingly redundant replies :)

Freya's P.O.V.

Beth and I were making party invitations at the arts and crafts center.

"I'm glad we get three days off after every challenge," Beth said.

"Me, too," I agreed, drawing team emblems on the envelopes. "It's a good time for everyone to mingle."

Lindsay walked over to us.

"Whatcha guys doing?" she asked curiously.

"We're inviting the Bass team for tonight's hot tub party," I explained.

"Didn't they lose yesterday?"

"Yeah, but we figured, 'why not let them join the fun, anyway?'"

"Besides, it's not challenge day," Beth said.

"Oh! What can I do to help?" Lindsay asked.

"Wanna make invitations with us?"

"Okay!"

Lindsay sat down next to Beth and we continued on with our work. The three of us ended up having so much fun together.

We finished the invitations and got ready to send them to the Killer Bass cabin.

As we made it back to the campgrounds, I could see Heather giving me a nasty look.

"What do you think you're doing?" Heather interrogated.

"Um, we're fixing to send invitations to tonight's hot tub party," I replied.

Heather snatched up an envelope that had a Bass symbol on it.

"Tell me you guys are not inviting the Killer Bass," Heather snarled.

I took back the envelope.

"Beth, Linds, go on and send the invitations. Heather and I need to talk," I said as I handed my share of the invitations to the pair. They both shrugged and headed over to the cabins. "Of course, we're inviting the Killer Bass. Why can't we?"

"It's our hot tub. The Killer Bass didn't win," Heather argued.

"Even if, that doesn't mean we can't share."

"You can't befriend the other team! That just makes you a threat!"

"Listen, today's not challenge day. There's no harm in having friends and being casual with one another during the three-day periods. If you don't wanna come to the party tonight, be my guest. We don't need your snarkiness to ruin the aura."

I confidently walked away, leaving Heather angry.
