I think it must be for the lack of going outside of your room on this website that debates about personal presentation and appearance literally never have any material analysis. sorry it's counterrevolutionary to shave my legs or wear makeup or a bra or style my hair in certain ways or "worry" about visible signs of aging but have some of you just never encountered real world situations where those things caused measurable problems dealing with other people, jobs, money, respectability, access to resources, or the ability to influence important situations? this starts happening when you go outside a lot. there's a debate on my dash rn about balding and finasteride in which not a single person has mentioned the potential negative social outcomes of losing your hair and how that can affect socioeconomic status and personal risk. maybe someone doesn't need to be "vain" to care about keeping their hair and consider the risks of medication for it. maybe they've seen how bald people get treated and referred to and made a cost benefit calculation that they can't afford, sometimes literally, to eat that cost, with everything else they've got going on. maybe I wear makeup when I have to go talk to doctors and other gatekeepers because people make assumptions about your class and mental status when you have "bad skin" and "eye bags". maybe a lot of women who wear uncomfortable restrictive bras and shave whatever and buy skin products and do gua sha have already been sharply punished when someone saw leg hair or a mustache or puffy greasy skin or god forbid their nipple through their shirt. not everyone can just say "fuck it, I can afford to eat one more social cost that will measurably impact my ability to get medical treatment or pay rent". sorry this sounds like an economics lecture, that's because it is

if you are about to tell me a long story about how you personally have not been affected by perceptions of your appearance actually so you can conclude it never happens at all, please don't. sometimes you get lucky, that's it. and on this website I think it's less likely that you're lucky and more likely that you're oblivious

Lithiola

The HD 85512, now named Furnar, star system was one of the earliest to be colonized. In it, the "gold and silver planets" of Pekelmaan and Lithiola were found fit for settlement. While moderate in habitability and resources by modern standards, with both having predominantly dry climates and thin atmospheres, they were both heavily developed by their host nations in the European Federation and the African Union. However, early sensors failed to detect that Pekelmaan's magnetosphere was weakening drastically due to a geomagnetic reversal until colonization was well underway. The pace of deterioration due to intense solar radiation proved too fast to counteract. As such, most Pekelmaanis were evacuated to Lithiola.

Though the two planetary colonial administrations were merged, the Furnar system was given less attention by Earth in favor of more promising colonies like Szanyun, Trinity, and beyond. While it wasn't unaffected by the Great Blackout, it suffered less and for a shorter amount of time due to being more developed and nearer to Earth. In the following decades, the colony underwent a period of deindustrialization and economic stagnancy, and there was a feeling of ostracization from the rest of its fellow core worlds.

Nevertheless, Lithiola bitterly resisted the IWC forces during the Secessionist War, blocking entry to Earth. The Furnar Campaign lasted for a few years, destroying much of the system's infrastructure. After the War and with the collapse of the Colonial Directorate, the Furnar star system would be given nominal independence as the Union of Lithiola. It transitioned to a federal parliamentary republican state, with 694 autonomous provinces and federal territories grouped into 21 provincial regions.

Internationally, the Lithiolan nation has joined and is deeply integrated into the wider Stellar Confederate Union. The economic aid and benefits from being a member have helped it to rebuild and diversify. Earth remains its largest import and export partner. Furthermore, Lithiola does not operate a standing military, instead relying on the SCU's mutual defense. As such, Lithiola is still very much tied to Earth's United Nations economically, politically, and militarily.

i do think it is interesting how the american right uses nostalgia as a weapon. "life was better under trump!" is a sentiment I see reverberate around right-wing circles, and the part that catches me is how young the people saying it often are.

a 24 year old, 22 year old or 19 year old has not liven under trump in a meaningful economic capacity. life being better under trump literally aligns with childhood and adolescence. a 12 year old sheltered from their parents' financial struggles sees that time as a time of stability, when their parents may have saw it as anything but.

however, there's still the desire to return to those times, times of idyllic stability and devoid of stress. our teens will on the average be a time of shelter, and to weaponize that as a damnation against the current administration is fascinating.

so I’ve got 1,651 words so far and the politics got mostly glossed over in favor of Licia having mega-aro+trauma feels over her queerplatonic relationship with Cal, because my natural impulse is always going to be toward character journey, and relationship building, especially the platonic relationships. As much as I love a good romance this mega-aro bitch gets really turned off by the thoughtless amatonormativity of the genre as a whole.

I am also waffling over the presentation of the QP relationships because I feel like people are going to read them as inherently romantic because we have been conditioned by the disneyfied amatonormativity of our media culture to see all dedicated partnerships as inherently romantic, and that’s always gonna annoy the shit out of me. /end grumpy aro rant

FEE videos went downhill after the guy who did their Moving Pictures left. Nowadays it’s mainly shorts which are meh to boomer tier. That’s sad. Say what you will about Moving Pictures it wasn’t always perfect but some of those videos were gems and it was refreshing to see pop culture and film examined through a libertarian lense.
