living weapon whumpee who's never known anything but pain and violence.

their existence hurts. they were made to be effective, not happy, and their masters decided that keeping them in constant pain provided better results. they're wilder, more unpredictable, and the pain keeps them from thinking straight enough to question anything.

they're only given painkillers, only allowed a respite from their seemingly endless suffering, after a successful mission. it keeps them loyal, and most importantly, teaches their brain to associate acts of violence with relief and rewards.

everyone they've ever met has treated them as a tool, a monster, or both. they don't know how to be anything else.

that is until they're rampaging through a village, destroying, killing, whatever their masters demand of them. whatever will give them a few blissful hours of numbness.

one of the villagers steps out of a ruined building and looks them straight in the eyes. whumpee expects fear, hatred, disgust, the things they see in the faces of every person who's ever crossed their path. but they see something completely different.

compassion.

whumpee is so stunned, they don't think to move or do anything at all as the villager steps closer, gently reaching out a hand to cup whumpee's face.

"oh, poor thing." they murmur, taking in the creature in front of them - part human, part animal, part machine. "they've done a number on you, huh?"

whumpee blinks at them. pain continues to course through their body, but the gentle hand on their cheek distracts them, even if just a little. all the indistinct noise in their foggy, addled mind finally goes quiet.

caretaker had stepped out in front of the being destroying their home with the intention to get through to it or die trying, and the expectation to absolutely die trying.

they did not at all expect the seemingly feral mishmash of metal, fur, and flesh to lean so heavily into their touch that they nearly collapsed into caretaker's arms.

So the Hapsburgs are known for their cousin-cousin uncle-niece etc marriages. But is the "Hapsburg chin" really a thing, or are we just being mean in the modern era?

Ok, so a couple of things:

First, I work on the nineteenth and early twentieth century Habsburgs, who are after Maria Theresa's genetic diversity introducing marriage. So they look more like this:

They are definitely not what we think of when we talk about the "Habsburg chin." That was an early modern thing.

Secondly, did it exist in the early modern period? I'll direct you to this picture of a bust that I took in Vienna two summers ago

So, yeah, that was a real thing. It's a prominent underbite.

But as a final point, it does frustrate me a bit that this family ruled one of the biggest empires in Europe for centuries and yet what people know is just the incest chin thing. Honestly, most--if not all-- royal families were very....let's call it "genetic diversity challenged."

Don't forget that Victoria, Isabella of Castille, and Elizabeth II all married their cousins too.

for reasons [did the 'taking classes' year of grad school in 2020/21 and was desperate not to be on zoom anymore] i only took 7/8 required credits for my phd when i was supposed to and now have to take a class. already kind of cringe and undignified given my advanced age in grad school years. but i couldn't even use it to take something like linalg that i actually need training in because it only counts toward my degree if it's a biology class. not only do i absolutely not need anyone to teach any biology topic to me at this point, because my job is to interpret and synthesize primary biology literature, but i also already took every even faintly relevant biology course in college, some of them twice, the majority of them at grad level with graduate students. and they were taught better and more effectively, because my undergraduate institution simply had better pedagogical practices than *** by basically any metric.

all of this has cashed out to me taking the paper-reading course about my field taught by one of my committee members, because it only meets once a week, i've read half the papers before, and it's graded on class participation which is my best stat. unfortunately, because it's taught by one of my committee members, i can't admit that i am taking it literally only for credit and would be capable of teaching the class given a couple of weeks to prep, and instead have to pretend that i am concerned about it meaningfully impairing my career that, while i have an encyclopedic knowledge of early embryonic development in flies and worms, i'm really more familiar with late embryonic development in mammals. this is requiring some contortions.

I really don't like the way so many people look at the genetic aspect of psychological issues. It sounds way too eugenetic to me.

I am not going too deep so I'll be quick and simplistic for the sake of explaining: hereditary conditions don't always show up. What you actually get isn't even the thing itself, as much as the predisposition.

If you end up getting a personality disorder for example, that's up to a mix of multiple things: childhood experiences, education, direct enviroment (family, friends, etc), the society you live in, and your temper (meant as "personality" sort of, but the correct term is "temper"). Depending of what is going on with all these things, they can either inable or disable the rising of specific problems.
