Did you watch the Blonney anecdote?

Watching it made me feel so proud of her and how far she had come. She really grew as a person and her level of maturity is much different from when she first appeared!

I also love her bond with the little blonde boy who had deer like eyes. Blonney was really dishing out words of wisdom to encourage him and she protected him the entire anecdote. It really warms my heart.

I also found it funny when she was teaching the little boy about death she was so straightforward and had no tolerance for fancy, pretentious words. He was like "Do bugs shrivel up when they die because their souls leave their bodies?" and she's like "No, they shrivel up because they are dead." I can totally imagine how an interaction between her and Avgust will turn out.

OMG I LOVED THE ANECDOTE

I was tearing up by the end. After all she went through in her adolescence, having ripped away her true self to appeal to others, she's finally being herself. Here's my favorite line of the event before I start with the content of the ask. (Hope you don't mind me derailing a bit)

It's such a big difference from how she talked about herself back in 1.2, because in this one it felt lighthearted rather than self deprecating. She accepted herself and her flaws, and she just played into that silly blonde girl part because she wanted to.

She has grown, my sweet child. I am so proud of her for overcoming her traumas and letting go of the past.

I choked during that part. She said it so nonchalantly and so straightforwardly. Such an icon.

She did really give him a needed push in the right direction and didn't let him wallow up in his self deprecation, he probably reminded her of herself, so she didn't even doubt his potential and opportunities.

I really wish he could have entered the suitcase with Blonney, but they can't make a playable character out of an anecdote. Though I wish we could see him again, I recognize closure when I see it. Time to make a story where they find each other again and it's just Blonney introducing him to the people she cares about.

Oh I can see Blonney being the fear of Druvis, Ms. Moissan and Vila from how straight forward she is.

The worst part is that if Avgust were to ask what "sex" means, Blonney would just tell him before being sent to the ocean by our lovely Mermaid. (You had it coming Blonney)

PDA is a big no-no for Kimi. The most he's willing to do is hold your hand in public, maybe a small kiss on the cheek. But for the most part, he doesn't want others to watch him kiss you or put his hands on you. He always felt it was weird to let others see that part of his relationship. He especially hated when he saw couples did too much PDA, so he didn't want to make others uncomfortable either.

But once you two are alone, it's as if he's glued onto you. You will never get a moment alone once you're at his apartment. Constantly he's around you and touching you in some way. Like a magnet of some kind.

Like when you brush your teeth, he uses his free hand to hold your waist while he uses the other hand to brush his own teeth. While you're scrolling mindless on TikTok in bed, he'll shove his face into your shoulder so he can see the TikTok's too. If you're in a Zoom meeting and unable to allow Kimi to touch you, don't worry - he's laying on the floor and holding onto your foot...

He's unable to get his hands off you in some way. It's funny since it's so obvious his love language is touch, and yet he refuses to do it for 80% of the day but once you're home, he does a complete 180. But you love it, you love having him come up to you randomly and press a kiss on your cheek or having him rest his head on your lap whilst you watch TV.

The usual way people see Ollie is that he's a sweet innocent guy, a gentlemen who wouldn't dare to hurt a fly. But as you two began to get comfortable as your relationship, you saw a side of him that people would rarely ever see.

That side being: his mean older sibling side. The side of him that destroys his little brother in Mario Kart and laughs in his face. The side of him that messes up his little sister hair and then takes photos of her from atrocious angles. Even worse: the side that accidentally dares his little brother to do something stupid, only for him to get hurt and begin to cry - making Ollie have to shush him with the promises of a free meal.

It was funny seeing it. To everyone else, he's the upmost respectful since he's the youngest in most areas, especially since he's joining Formula 1 soon. It's almost as if he's been holding back all of his sass and rudeness till he gets home to annoy the shit out of his family.

Although it's funny to see him annoy them, what's not funny is how he starts to do the same thing to you... He also annoys the shit out of you, driving you insane.

He ruffles your hair, despite just brushing it to go to bed. He takes your phone and waves it above your head, teasing you for your short height. He taps the sides of your big headphones, causing you to wince at the loud sound of the taps. Overall: you want to kill him.

But at the same time, you find it endearing to see how annoying he can be. It's nice to see him be a little shit-head with you, and then the sweetest boy possible in the public.

Although Pepe is a boy, he never really showed it. Instead, he acted more as a man, taking responsibility for lots of things, taking charge to educate himself on different topics, and always training to make himself stronger. Not only that, he's one of the very few boys on the F2 Grid who actually finished high school. You loved that about him, he's always been a bit more level headed than his peers in certain situations.

But with you, for some reason it's as if his brain shuts down. As if the entire brain goes from wrinkly and healthy to smooth and rotten. He asks you the stupidest questions that you didn't even know were possible.

For example, when you both were watching a new show together. The character was Asian and yet she had a thick Scottish accent, which shocked and confused Pepe, he couldn't wrap his head around it. So he asked, "I thought she was Asian..." He failed to remember you can be a different ethnicity and nationality....

Or when you were both cooking some pancakes together. You poured the batter into the pan, some of it accidentally getting on the spatula. Pepe decided to take action himself, since he was pretty useless in the kitchen, he grabbed the spatula and put it in the sink and touched the metal head of the spatula... Burning his fingers slightly from the heat...

Despite his goofy mistakes, mostly ending in him seeming like an idiot, you loved it. It was a sign of his comfortableness with you. He fully trusted you to not judge him and help him with his stupid questions, which you always did.

it was mostly just one just one of those work place crushes. where he sees her and he’s like ‘yeah she’s attractive and i wouldn’t mind dating her’ — but it did not help at ALL that they had to act together in a romantic comedy.

BACKGROUND: ( teen pregnancy, cheating )

aofie and john are just sixteen when they find out aofie is pregnant. it's already terrifying, and it becomes even more so when the topic of twins hits the table. still, they believe that love conquers all. they cared so deeply for each other, how could that love and care not only multiply with more additions to the family?

once the twins are born, it's clear as day that maeve is a carbon copy as aofie.

"YOU'RE JUST LIKE YOUR MOM !" it's a good thing, when you're a toddler picking up your mother's mannerisms. it's cute, even, the way you both put your hands on your hips as you watch the television from afar.

when she's six, she takes a liking to the piano. however, in true sister fashion, she decides to drop her focus on it as soon as she realizes her brother also seems to like making music. he's much better at it, anyway. he can do the writing and composing, she'd only been very good at reading and playing.

"YOU'RE JUST LIKE YOUR MOM !" it's a good thing, when you're learning to cook alongside your mom. the two of you spend the evenings prepping meals, and you're thrilled to help present them to your family.

maeve had always liked building things. playing with legos growing up, putting puzzles together... she liked having something to do with her hands. making something out of nothing. she liked keeping busy, and felt a great sense of pride any time she completed / built something all on her own.

"YOU'RE JUST LIKE YOUR MOM !" it's a good thing, until it's not. aofie had been stepping out-- this family life hadn't been as fulfilling as sixteen year old her thought it'd be. now, it's just john and the twins, and all these endearing traits had lost their charm.

she sees it, the way her brother and father struggle to make eye contact with her. how they can hardly stand to be in the same room as her. it unlocks a certain rage within her-- one she didn't know she was capable of.

still, even though she was angry, she felt she had to take over. they were missing a maternal figure, and at fourteen years old, maeve stepped up. making meals for the three of them, keeping up with the family agenda, doing the grocery shopping, writing everything down for everyone... she could take the good parts of aofie and make them work.

a year after her family life implodes, the remaining finnegans are off to palmview. there's promise of a new life -- a blank slate, of sorts. however, could the slate truly be blank if the ghost you were trying to avoid was haunting your face and mannerisms?

a once loud and lively girl has now become a hollow shell of herself. the good thing about the move was it had brought her and her brother closer than they had been previously. they had no one but each other. their class schedules had been different, but they always made time to give each other a nod in the hallway or sit together for lunch.

one thing she really liked about her new school was their wood and metal shop programs. she took every trade class she could. it was nice to keep busy and to see the results of her hard work. with a lack of friends, each one of her creations ended up in her brother's room once they had been graded. what could he possibly need a birdhouse for? who knows, but it's his problem now.

it had been easy to keep to herself. she would simply shoot down any attempt at social interaction. she hated working with others, too embarrassed to try and water her accent down for those around her to understand. it was just easier to be nobody.

well, it was, until the rumors began circulating about her brother. one-sided, nasty rumors about him and his friend. a relationship she'd witnessed with her own eyes, whether the other party was aware of it or not. between their social and familial fallout, it was beginning to feel like carrying the name FINNEGAN was a curse.

suddenly, the two who had been so good at hiding themselves away found themselves in the social spotlight. her brother, for the rumors circulating, and maeve, for cussing out & attempting to fight anyone who dare whisper his name in her presence. it doesn't take long for her to get hit with a suspension.

john finnegan is frustrated, says he doesn't recognize the kids in front of him. maeve can barely stand to hear him speak, angry at him, at aofie, at everyone. still, the three had come to an agreement that the twins would lay low for the rest of school. it had been their original plan anyway. and it's one she plans on sticking to... only after she slashes a set of tires in defense of her brother.

she graduates, plans to get the hell out of palmview, but plans fall through. she's stuck and has no backup plan. luckily for her, there's an auto repair shop with a very kind employee, willing to teach her more than the basics of fixing a car. she'd learned the basics years ago, and she begins working as his apprentice. it doesn't take her long to go from apprentice to full-time employee. it fulfills her need to fix, but not completely

she makes furniture on the side, selling it at farmer's markets, craft fairs, different markets in general... there's just nothing better than the feeling of watching your work walk away with a happy customer

PERSONALITY:

she still struggles to make friends to this day, but she's got a few of them. she's fiercely loyal to those she cares about, and is always offering to slash a set of tires... ( it was just such a rush! )

doesn't know how to think before she speaks, and even if she did, everything is always written clear as day on her face

Due to being a Wayne, he was the first 'real' friend you ever had. But then one day, the friendship between the both of you changed. And you were sent overseas for your safety by your father. You haven't been back in Gotham since. But once you hear of your parent's murder, you know it's time to return and face your past once and for all.

The first time you had ever visited the circus, it was on your eleventh birthday. 

And unknowingly at the time, it was that specific event that ended up changing your life forever. It can be argued that it changed your life a bit for the better as well as for the worst. It was the day you met your very first TRUE friend, Jerome Valeska.

Being a member of the prestigious Wayne family, you were expected to mingle with your peers. A.K.A other children of Gotham's wealthiest; i.e, members of the 1%, celebrities, people involved in the law - along with the shadier parts of it. You had made some friendships with some of these children, but none of them were true friends. Where nothing was expected in return for the other's company and allegiance.

But Jerome...due to being born to a woman who worked in the circus, he had nothing to give other than his friendship and loyalty. And because you helped him get out of a situation that involved his angry Uncle Zach. He became your very first REAL friend.

The two of you become inseparable. One of you always running after the other.

The adults in your life found it endearing, and grateful. That after all this time, you had a friend like Jerome. So, your parents, being who they are - opened their arms and home to him. Whenever the circus was in town. After all, to those who cared to look - it was obvious, that Jerome wasn't treated very kindly by the people who took care of him.

By the two of you were fourteen, something in your friendship with Jerome had changed. Maybe it was because the two of you didn't spend as much time together anymore? Or maybe perhaps it was because you were an older sister now, with a nine-year-old brother? And he was jealous of Bruce and the close sibling relationship the two of you had? (One that infinitely much better than the one he shared with his own twin.)

Whatever the case, Jerome no longer acted the same around you. He became like an entirely different person. As if his entire personality was hanging on by a thread, and that he was just waiting for one bad day. To push him over the edge.

And then it happened.

He took things to far between the two of you. Confessed his feelings - which didn't bother you, since you realized, you had begun to have a crush on him yourself. Admitted to stalking you days before, he let you know he was back in town. Killed your pet cat and threatened to harm you or your brother. Jerome became unhinged and dangerous to be around.

It devastated not only you, but your parents as well. Who thought of Jerome as another son. (So much so, that he had his own dedicated bedroom in the manor at that point.) But because he went off the deep end, your parents were worried about the safety of both your brothers and your own wellbeing. And with a heavy heart, they had to make a tough decision.

After Haly's circus left Gotham that year to stick to their regular route, you also left. Your parents had decided to send you overseas to their family villa in Switzerland, for your own protection and safety. From one person who you thought you could trust.

It would be the last time you would see your parents, and your brother for many years to come.

rapidfire round on some family stuff that I've been playing with/fleshing out lately~

I didn't think that the way the Shadow Dragon Rook's relationship with their family came up in the game fit Ver, so I'm kinda twisting it: I've only recently decided that in my canon, the "Mercar" that's mentioned in-game is actually Ver's uncle by marriage, and he is the husband of Abelia (maiden name Caeso), her paternal aunt.

Abelia (one of the reasons Ver also has a floral name!) was very close with her brother (Linnaeus Caeso), and unlike most of the family, loved her sister-in-law (Melisa Bayart), so she was the one who talked her husband into adopting their orphaned niece. (Ver doesn't call them mom and dad- to her they are still Auntie Abbie, and Uncle Valerius or "Sir".)

The person who filled in sort of the "paternal" role in her life is an old surface dwarf, Brogan- she's been renting the flat above his little restaurant (or I guess "eatery" is more accurate, it's just a little hole in the wall that's been the same since before she was even born) in the district I call Catsbane for literally over a decade now, and would have had a lot more hungry nights without him. (He was also the one who gave her ex/roommate Adris a job as a dishwasher when he lived there with her, and the only reason the Templars got in to arrest Adris as an escaped slave was because old Brogan with the meat tenderizer is... well, not much, against three soldiers armed to the teeth.)

(he still calls her "columbae mea", an old Tevene term of endearment I made up- it means "my dove/pigeon" in Latin, and he started calling her that because in her early 20's, she only ever "came home to roost", sleep and/or metaphorically lick her wounds.)(let me lean into the "old queer man nurturing the young queer woman like a daughter he never had" trope okay, it makes my heart so happy)

Tristan is/was the eldest of five siblings, and all of the others are still alive by the time Veilguard rolls around: he has two little brothers, Adam and Henry, and two little sisters, Edith and Matilde (Matty for short).

I want to say that they (along with his parents, Wymond and Margaret/"Meggy") are the reason he wanted so bad to fight at Ostagar originally, even though he was poorly trained, and only 17 years old: to protect them as best as he could.

He's not kept in touch with them since his death (his family was informed that he had died on the battlefield, though they weren't updated that while that's still kinda true, he also kinda got better in the meantime), and unlike many Fereldans from the area near the area affected by the Fifth Blight, his parents and youngest sister stayed in their old home until the 9:52 combined Blight chased them north too.

The one thing that Wymond laments in the move is that from now on, he will no longer be able to visit his eldest son's empty grave on Tristan's birthday, which was kind of a ceremony he had been doing, faithfully, for 20+ years now. (I'm toying with the thought that Meggy was hit even harder by Tristan's death, and even to this day, she can't even stand the sight of the headstone- but if he were to show up today, she would be the only one to recognize her son in this tower of a warden, lol.)

Marcus canonically doesn't have a family so it's difficult to talk about that, but since there is that skeleton you can find during Emmrich's recruitment quest that sounds like he left the Ingellvar Rook behind, I did come up with a little story for his background!!!

I though that originally, he was born to a minor noble's daughter who was engaged to be wed to someone else, and one of the family's (free, but poor) servants, in a very classic, tragic love story. (Originally it was far darker, but that piece of dialogue made me want to pivot to a more sad than horrifying one, lol.)

In a nutshell, his mother managed to hide the pregnancy from everyone while she was carrying him, and the child was to be raised by his father's nearby, though estranged family (under the condition that the mother secretly sends them money to support her son), but then she unfortunately died in childbirth, and Marcus' father was left in a very difficult situation: either he could unceremoniously get rid of the body of his beloved (against all Nevarran custom), pretend not to know what happened to her, and raise their child alone and in secret (with no help, because there was no support coming, and the family pulled out), or to come clean, give his love the honor and the burial that she deserves, and have the child be taken away- or, potentially even to be accused of having murdered her, and get imprisoned, or worse.

So, he did the only other thing he could think of to give the both of them the best chance: he stole into the depths of Grand Necropolis with the infant, left him (along with a piece of his own heart, so to speak) in a place where he knew that the Mourn Watchers would find him, and then flee the country. The circumstances of his death are still quite unclear, but he was found dead soon after, still within Nevarra City, so.... well, he didn't get far.

So yeah, while he's no bastard prince and this has nothing to do with anything regarding him, Marcus is technically of noble birth- but nobody knows it, not even him, and there is nobody alive who could confirm it.

As far as anyone is concerned, he's just a soft-spoken, pretty boy with considerable magical and academic talent, and no familial ties to speak of.

Do you have headcanons on Francesca and Benedict’s relationship? They seem to be the quietest siblings in the books, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ben shared his sister feelings regarding how overwhelming it is to be a Bridgerton.

I agree of your assessment IF were talking about show Francesca and show Benedict, who are essentially very cute and lovable versions of their book counterparts. Because they are both artistically inclined and really tend to hide most of their true feelings behind a smile.

But in the books Benedict is such a loose cannon, I guess so is book Francesca if you think about it, they both just hide their lunacy in different ways, by not living in London where LW can catch wind of their respective indecencies.

The way I HC in the books, Benedict is the closest with Eloise, Colin is the closest with Daphne and Anthony is the closest with Francesca. Mainly because she’s so quiet and well behaved, he’s eternally grateful to have this one, perfectly normal, perfectly amiable sister, who is always happy to see him. So much he’s willing to look the other way whenever she does do something scandalous. And in my HC Anthony brags about Francesca’s accomplishments a lot, he’s just happy that unlike the other three at least Francesca doesn’t love to challenge his authority or try his patience and that’s all he needs to consider her the best of the lot. And Francesca is always sort of smug about being Anthony’s favourite. The way he would let her and did let her get away with anything simply because she’s absolutely endearing to him.

But Benedict is definitely the brother who taught her how to sneak around and encouraged her to explore her creative side. Benedict’s biggest insecurity is not that he’s not seen, it’s that he IS seen, but people seem to think he’s interchangeable with the rest of his brothers, feeling he’s really done nothing remarkable to stand out over Anthony and Colin. While Francesca simply feels like she doesn’t belong in her family, she disappears next to everyone else in her family because she’s so good at being good, and so perfectly normal in a family of scandalous people. So It’s just that it’s hard to think about many things they have in common, other than a love for doing things and not get caught. Because Francesca is a covert operative who has always been cool under pressure, while Benedict is more the type to launch his bombs directly and hope nobody notices when they explode.

I don’t know maybe that’s my opinion. Also we don’t talk about Francesca enough, even tho I like her more than Hyacinth and Daphne. But once s3 rolls around, that will change dear readers. I promise you.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Continued from my last post.

First, thoughts on the rest of the Part 1 Paralogues.

Tales of the Red Canyon - I fucking love Sothis. This Paralogue shows that even if she's the reincarnation of an ancient grown-up goddess, Sothis is still her own being now and very much a child. She may possess more wisdom and power than most children, but she has the same fear, curiosity, excitability and vulnerability as any child does. She's just so endearing.

An Ocean View - And I also fucking love Seteth and Flayn. This Paralogue is important for them as it's where the game reveals the truth that makes everything about their dynamic make far more sense in retrospect: they are father and daughter, not brother and sister. I genuinely did not see that coming on my first playthrough, so I must tip my hat to them.

Sword and Shield of Seiros - This Paralogue doesn't really hold any weight unless you're playing it in the Golden Deer route, something it has in common with another Paralogue later down the list. Claude coming along, and his reaction to the pirates disguising as Almyrans, makes all the difference. If you didn't realize his true ethnicity before, you should now.

Oil and Water - Pure filler. Nothing is really gained from this. It's just showcasing Hanemann and Manuela's love-hate relationship without actually developing it any. Highly skippable.

Falling Short of Heaven - Yawn. I don't really care about either Catherine or Ashe, so nothing engaged me here. It doesn't even show what Ashe supposedly found out at the end, and the fact that I feel no need to discover what it was reflects my utter disinterest in Ashe.

True Chivalry - This uses the same map as "The Forgotten", but it's way more enjoyable due to Rodrigue's presence and seeing more of what Felix's strained relationship with him is like. And yeah, I am 100% on Felix's side here! Rodrigue's knightly ideals are all well and good on their own, but he has let maintaining them consume his fundamental humanity much like his colleague Gilbert's failure to live up to them consumed his. Behaving as though his fealty to a dead king matters more than civilian lives and as though his older son dying for that same fealty makes his death commendable rather than tragic is ridiculous, and Felix has every right to call him out on it. Surrounded by that attitude for all his life, no wonder Felix is how he is!

Death Toll - While we got the story of how Raphael's parents died and how Ignatz' parents were connected to it in their Support conversations, this Paralogue ends up deepening that story by revealing that their death was a casualty of political strife between the Alliance's nobility. My God, just when I thought Count Gloucester couldn't be more of a piece of shit! But in the end, Raphael again shows just what a pure soul he is - he's focused on doing good in the present instead of grieving for the past, and he's not going to let Count Gloucester's involvement make him think any less of Lorenz just like how he refuses to think any less of Ignatz. He's far from the sharpest tool in the shed mentally, but he has a powerful heart.

Dividing the World - Yet again, we get a Paralogue that's only effective on the Golden Deer route. It's a good accompaniment to Hilda and Cyril, where Hilda showcases her innocent racism - as in, prejudice shaped by ignorance and what she's heard rather than hatred and malice - and Cyril showcases his internalized racism - the way Fodlan looks upon his kind and the better position he's in now in Foldan compared to Almyra has caused him to resent his birthplace and its culture. Throw Claude in there too and it's a very interesting combo.

A Cursed Relic - Another super-hard DLC map. Myson, one of the Agarthans, is the enemy here, as we see him experimenting on creating Demonic Beasts, presumably on Solon's behest. Constance steals the show here, with the contrast between her regular personality when out of sunlight and her affected personality when in sunlight being vividly displayed with her attitude toward Duke Gerth, yet it still somehow meshes together to form a complete, interesting character. Her regular personality is her as she wishes to be, while her affected personality lays all her true insecurities and responses to her past trauma bare for all to see.

The Secret Merchant - This Paralogue is in Part 2 on the Black Eagles route, and only on the Crimson Flower branch, but in Part 1 for the other two. Aside from getting to see Pallardo before his turn to banditry, it doesn't have much to offer story-wise and can be skipped.

Now then, on to Chapters 8 and 9.

- We have great lead-in scenes to the Remire Village mission in all routes. On the Black Eagles route, the foreshadowing of Edelgard being the Flame Emperor becomes way more blatant while setting up the choice Byleth may end up faced with as a result. On the Blue Lions route, we are formally introduced to Lord Arundel while Dimitri finally reveals his and Edelgard's familial relationship. And on the Golden Deer route, Claude finds a book showing the Immaculate One which Seteth promptly confiscates, exposing that the Church is involved in a cover-up that Byleth may be involved in somehow, while also establishing that Tomas has gone missing. No matter which route, you can palpably sense that the plot is thickening.

- There are two red herrings concerning the Flame Emperor presented here. Given that the chapter is called "The Flame in the Darkness", it's easy to think they're responsible for the Remire Village tragedy that Tomas (actually the Agarthan scientist Solon) initiates, and that their denial of being so is a lie. In actuality, they're telling the truth: they haven't been in the loop as to what the Agarthans are doing since they lent them the Death Knight. The other is that your confrontation with the Flame Emperor always ends with your route's Lord's vassal (Hubert, Dedue and Hilda respectively) asking where their Lord is, causing a distraction that allows the Flame Emperor's escape. Given that Edelgard, Dimitri and Claude have all been acting shady on occasion and that they haven't been in the same area as the Flame Emperor yet, there's reason to suspect any one of them. In actuality, Edelgard is the Flame Emperor on all routes, meaning that only on the Black Eagles route is the suspicion truly justified.

- I have a problem with the post-mission scene on the Blue Lions route. While it effectively showcases Dimitri's trauma from the Tragedy of Duscur and also reveals his motive of seeking revenge for it, it always starts out under the assumption that you failed to save villagers in the mission. When you do, Dimitri snaps and screams "I will cut you to shreds!" But if you save all the villagers, this never happens, and yet Dimitri still opens the scene up apologizing for showing you "that side of him" during the battle, rendering it incoherent.

- A much bigger problem, though, is the scene with Dimitri during the ball. No other route has an equivalent scene, so it once again feels like foreshadowing how Dimitri's personal plot will become a tumor in Azure Moon. Also, if you picked Dimitri for the Goddess Tower encounter as female Byleth, then it will feel like this same scene dragging out longer than it needs to.

- The scene where you come upon Rhea looking out at the night sky and singing the song that Sothis sang to her is extremely eerie, and yet at the same time there's something extremely sad about it that you can't quite place at this moment. Later on, of course, you can place it: at her core, beneath all the illusions of dignity and grace, despite all the centuries of living, Rhea is still a sad, lonely child. The bond she had with her mother was deeper than any of her siblings', and she truly believes that she can never feel at peace in life, that the world itself will have no peace, unless her mother is there. It's just so incredibly tragic.

- Jeralt's death....really, what is there to say? It's devastating, and that's all you need to know. There's more to talk about regarding the fall-out of his death, but I'll save that for next time.

Perc'ahlia Week Day 5 Fic

Vex isn't even sure how long she stands there. At one point, her finger wanders up and traces her lips, the lips Percy just kissed. A single act, accompanied by some objectively frustrating words, and her understanding of Percy, his actions, and the reasons behind them have changed completely.

Everything he'd made for her and done for her, some so easily explained as the acts of an ally, a brother in arms. The rest of it, all of which, she's told herself, could still just be him being a friend. Maybe some of it still was, she supposes, but now she thinks the rest of it he's done for the same reason she's behaved as she has towards him.

Always a cost or a cruelty. The old words ring in her head, a warning her mind will never not give her.

But Percy isn't like most rich men in the first place, she reminds herself. It's not at all a nice thing to think, but what happened to him at the hands of the Briarwoods and their ilk may have saved him from that fate. Thanks to them, he's known loss, and pain, and deprivation, and he's known what it is to fight for his own survival. There may be some assholes with money who went through some or all of that and still turned out to be the usual kind of bad, but Vex doesn't think Percy's one of them. Hells, if he ever does join his sister in helping with the running of Whitestone, his people will hopefully fare better from his having been in their shoes.

This offer's kind of a new one for her, too. There have been very few offers Vex has received involving any relationships lasting longer than a few nights, certainly none from anyone with much money, or any she's had any interest in taking. With the rich men, sex was more likely to be a cost, and too often wouldn't be the kind she'd at all enjoy either.

There's never been any rich man she's wanted either thing from, either. There'd been one of their wives once, wrong and downtrodden, whom she'd spent a splendid two nights with, and she might have liked more with her, but that still would've been limited commitment, and anyway the woman had been too scared to allow her any more.

And that had all been for good reason. Relationships with any sort of people have costs. For most of their lives, neither she nor Vax have been willing to pay those long-term. They spent so long not at home anywhere, not willing to put anyone before each other, never finding anyone to keep with them besides Trinket. Even when they became part of a bigger group, it took them a long time to believe it would last, to admit they cared for their new friends as much as they've now come to.

Not to mention Percy actually would come with costs many a lover wouldn't. Vex has seen the whole thing with Orthax, and she knows more figurative demons still plague him. Anyone who gets involved with him would, inevitably, have to at least partly face those with him, no matter how much he tried to spare them that.

The thing is, Vex very much *wants* to do that. She wants to help Percy, to help him fight, at least as much as someone else can help someone in that struggle. She likes to think, in fact, that she's been a help to him already, including with what she's said to him just now. All of this has been true before already, but knowing how far things are looking likely to go, she wants to even more.

There are Percy's less savory traits to think of as well. He still has much of the rich man's arrogance, is not free from his occasional obliviousness. Which she does even find endearing on occasion, but she's aware that were she to get involved with him, even if she could maybe then avert some of the worst of it, the countless times it's driven her crazy will probably still get worse.

And then there are his cruelties. Vex knows those too, has witnessed them. Mostly aimed at those who deserved it, yes, and never aimed at her. When she's feeling optimistic, she can hope they never will be. But she knows well that those who get too close to each other have too much ability to hurt each other, and will at least a little, even when they don't want to, and it's impossible to be completely sure the worst would never happen.

Percy's not a typical rich asshole, no. He'd be much less of a danger to her if he were.

And yet, she can't help but think of the gifts he gave her the night before and that day in Syngorn; he still might never know how much that meant to her. Everything he's created for her, asking only that she do her part in their battles together, if even that. That just his smile makes her feel too happy inside. He seems to smile around her a lot, too. How good kissing him felt, better than kissing ever has, maybe.

As she finally starts to walk back to the others, Vex also things about everything else she wants with Percy. Everything from the purest of heart to heart conversations (much as those still scare her) to the filthiest of sexual acts. The idea that she could have all of it makes her want to just leap first and look later.

When she gets back to them, Vax and Scanlan have at least put everything back into their pants. They have managed to get a hold of Percy, and are now showing him the creations in the snow Vex is honestly going to try not to look at too much. He is looking at them, making some possibly sarky comments, from the reactions of the other two, though she can't quite catch their words. He also takes a moment to glance over at where Keyleth is casting away, fondness and maybe a little concern flickering across his face as he does so.

Costs she can pay. Cruelties she can risk. Percy is worth it.

Hey! I really want to get into Discworld because I love seeing you post about it- can I please get a rec of maybe the first three books I should read? I've heard that most fans have a preferred order lol

Omg, you have no idea how excited I got when I saw this ask, I'm so glad my love for this series is proving infectious! Unfortunately by asking this of me you have in fact activated my trap card, so please buckle in because I'm incapable of being normal about this topic.

Alright so in terms of where to go next, there are these sort of thematic arcs throughout the series that are like threads you can follow, each with their own starting point. Obligatory flowchart incoming:

I won't go into them all in detail, but I can give you a few key recs and then you can pick and choose your reading order from there based on what interests you.

So first of all we've got Small Gods, which is one of the more popular starter recs, and for good reason. It's more or less a stand-alone so it's a good way to dip your toe in and get a feel for the series as a whole, which is slightly less relevant here since I know you've already read The Colour of Magic, but it's still quite good and worth mentioning up front. It's about the god Om who goes to manifest himself in the world to address his latest prophet, but winds up stuck in the form of a small tortoise because despite having this huge religious institution in his name, it turns out this prophet is his only remaining true believer. Said prophet then gets swept up in some political intrigue, all the while being yelled at by an irate tortoise whose voice only he can hear. It's a good indicator of the style of comedy and general vibe of the rest of the series, and it's where I started reading so it's got a special place in my heart.

I also recommend Monstrous Regiment, which is one of my all-time favourites. It's about a girl who dresses up as a boy to enlist in the army so that she can find her brother, and ends up part of this sort of ragtag underdog regiment. It's surprisingly queer, although no specific labels get used so a lot of the characters just have a sort of nebulously not cis/not straight vibe, but there is an actual canon wlw relationship, and at least one character who based on the text I would argue is a trans man even if those exact words are never used. A lot of the Gender™ in this book really resonated with teen Rowan for reasons that wouldn't become clear until several years later lol. By modern standards of representation it does stumble a little bit, but you can tell the overall intentions were good and it still feels very queer-positive. It's also just a fun read, all the characters are really endearing, there's a vampire who has sworn off blood and is instead obsessed with coffee and I love them with my whole entire heart.

My other biggest rec is Going Postal, which is another of my all-time favourites and where the reference in my url comes from. It's about a conman who's been caught and is about to be executed, but instead gets put in charge of the city's failing postal service. It's another really fun read, and it's got two direct sequels (Making Money and Raising Steam) wherein said conman gets put in charge of other public service institutions as a form of enrichment to keep him out of trouble.

This is already long so I'll just quickly cover the other main arcs. The Watch books are all extremely good, probably my favourite arc overall, they've got more of a police procedural crime mystery vibe so if you're into that Guards! Guards! is the starting point for those. If you're interested in the witches I'd recommend skipping Equal Rites and starting with Wyrd Sisters, it's a parody of Macbeth and it's very good. The other two Industrial Revolution books are stand alones that can be read whenever; Moving Pictures is a parody of the golden age of Hollywood, and The Truth is about the invention of the printing press and the Disc's first investigative journalist looking into a conspiracy to frame the patrician for murder. The Death novels are good but not the best starting point imo, worth coming back for at some point though, and parts of Night Watch make more sense if you've read Thief of Time first but it's not required. Rincewind is also worth revisiting eventually, he is one of my favourite characters, but maybe wait until you're already hooked before going back for The Light Fantastic and the rest of his books.

Friendships: Tia's Friends

Finally continuing on with these! I didn't mean to wait so long after the first one with Nate, but life has been kind of hectic for me so far this year that I never had the proper time or motivation to continue them. But, now that I have some more free time I want to fix that, so here is the next 'friendships' post with Hestia! Like previously stated on Nate's, these are just the friendships she has with the created/established characters, but in reality she might have a few more than these ones. I hope you enjoy~!

- Feorian Friends

. Emberleigh: One of Hestia's only and oldest friends, as they met when they were teens just after she started her junior training for the army. As Emberleigh is 5 years older than her, their friendship originally started off as a mentoring sort of one, where Emberleigh helped train Tia with her high skill and knowledge in combat. Their dynamic was this way for a long while, before they slowly started to open up to each other about non-combat-related things. Their friendship is a very refreshing one for Tia, as she does not have many close female friends and she sees Emberleigh as an older sister figure. Since Emberleigh's recent retirement from the army they have not interacted as much, but Tia still values their friendship all-the-same and every once in a while they will meet to catch up on all that has been happening in their lives.

. Tyson: Someone she has only known for a short time so far, but who she has unexpectedly found herself spending more time with. Although their fathers are close friends and Ty's father is Feor's top general, they never had too many interactions growing up until Ty's recent enrollment in the army. Tia is not sure yet if she would consider him a friend, as she does often get exhausted with his constant playfulness and joking manner, but there is something about him that still brings a small smile to her face. Though she is always scolding him for not taking things seriously all the time, she also finds him to be very endearing, as he is one of the only people her age who properly respects and treats her as a person. The moments where he acts all soft and adoring with her has also left her with an "unusual" feeling inside, one she is not really sure of yet what it means but one she is welcomed to, even if she won't admit it yet.

- The Other Main Characters:

. Ignatius: Although he is her brother, they have always been very close, ever since their childhood. During the early years of her life she only stuck next to him or their parents, as she always had a hard time trusting or socializing with her peers. She has always valued having her older brother in her life, as he always was protective of her and looked out for her best interest and encouraged her to pursue her dreams, even when others didn't. She has felt the most comfortable unmasking and being her true self around him, and they have both been each other's biggest confidants and first choice when they need to vent to someone. Even with some of their occasional squabbling moments, they have retained a strong bond to this day, with Tia now taking more of a protective role in their sibling relationship as she wants to help protect her brother's privacy and happiness from ignorant and prejudiced people.

. Brooke: Someone she has always been fairly friendly with, even before the main adventure. They were never quite close enough to be considered friends, and Tia was wary of him for the longest time knowing him and her older brother were childhood rivals, but she never had much of a problem with him. Sure his outgoingness was a little much for her at first, but in time she eases up and gets to know him better, finding it relieving they have some things in common such as both of them being neurodivergent. She always found him to be pretty cool to talk to, and with one of her special interests being pirates and Mareasian history in general, she always looked forward to getting to talk to him during conference meetings and asking him all the questions she has from her reading without the fear of judgement. Their relationship does get more tense during the main adventure after the secret of his and Nate's relationship gets out, as things get awkward and Tia becomes unsure of how to interact with him as she processes all of their history together, but eventually they come to an understanding of each other and become good friends. She is happy seeing how much he makes her brother happy, and sees him like her "big brother-in-law" even before him and Nate get officially married.

. Amaya: They have had a lot of interactions over the years, especially as Tia is closest in age to her, but with her difficulty making or calling people her friends they are not quite to a friendship level at the current time. She knew from when they were younger that Maya always wanted to be her friend, but it took Tia a long time to warm up to her. Their friendship kicks off mainly after the main events, as the more they had a chance to speak together the more they found they had in common. Both relate on having high expectations and ideas placed on them to be and do other things than who they actually are as people even when they have made their stances on their respective matters quite clear, and having more artistic past-times, specifically dance for Maya and music for Tia. Whenever they get a chance to see each other and have the time to, they usually like to combine their talents into a little performance, and it was working on their first performance together that really cemented their friendship, though also just talking and getting to know each other more. Tia comes to feel comfortable in having someone so sweet and patient for a friend, and Maya is always happy and honored knowing someone amazing like Tia feels so comfortable and relaxed around her, with them having a sweet but little bit playful friendship on Maya's part.

. Talia: These two have rarely interacted on their own, mostly because neither has really felt any kind of gravitation to try and get to know the other better. Talia knows that she gets along with Maya but never personally paid her much mind with her quietness, meanwhile Tia would be a bit exhausted with her energy but it is through Maya that they would start to understand each other more. Having a mutual interest in the arts they have some common interests that help come up with things to talk about, and through talking with each other more they start to have a little more of a 'playful' dynamic, with Talia acting as a cool, teasing older sister figure that would try to bring out Tia's expressiveness more. Tia also learns to admire her passion and see how she is not as vain or shallow as the Arianian nobles think, and was pleasantly surprised to find that Talia has more of an interest in fighting and physical activity than some others would think with her more glamorous appearance.

. Gaia: She has had a few friendly interactions with Gaia before, mainly through the Alliance and them both being princesses, but that was the extent of their relationship for the longest time. Since there is a 7 year age-gap between them, it is difficult for them to relate on many things with each other as they have very different life experiences. Though despite that, Tia always felt comfortable speaking with Gaia with her more calm matureness compared to the peers she was surrounded by back in Feor, and she really appreciated Gaia's patience and support for her. Like with the others, her friendship with Gaia mainly starts after the main events, but it is a comfortable one for Tia as she knows she can be her complete self around Gaia instead of putting on a mask or guard like she does with others.

SCOOBY: This one's easy, and I'm sure you can guess it if you've been around my blog for more than five minutes. GRILLO'S PETS ORIGIN STORY!!!!!!! Love love love the Grillo's Pet Shop origin! If you're somehow unaware, this is the origin shown in flashback in Scooby-Doo Goes Hollywood (1979) aka my favorite movie ever. Basically the gang (as teens already) go to a pet store wanting to buy a dog. While there, a baby Scooby tries to shows off for them and makes a whole mess (as usual <3) but is so endearing they take him home anyways. This is by far my favorite origin for Scooby as here he's more than just "Shaggy's dog" but the gangs' as a unit. This origin has really great gang interactions in and about Scooby with Shaggy showing reluctance to get him in the first place! (As opposed the the besties since birth origin that's common in other adaptations, such as APNSD) I really love that detail as we get to see other gang members (especially Velma!!!! The Grillo's pets origin has some amazingggg Scooby+Velma interactions and screencaps) argue for Scooby becoming a part of their lives, and it also paints Shaggy in the family-member-who-didn't-want-a-pet-but-now-they're-best-friends role that often exists in real life (and which is just HILARIOUS for Shaggy and Scooby!)

SCRAPPY: Of the Scrappy origins I'm familiar with (those being the one from the SD&SD theme song, and the other the episode surrounding his birth [the one all the baby bonnet scrappy screencaps are from]) I definitely prefer the original theme song version much better. Some of that strong preference is likely because I've spent a lot of time thinking about how I would go about reintroducing (or redeeming [in the public opinion] as my blog title says) Scrappy Doo, and that's by doing an extended exploration of the box-in-the-mail origin story. I'm also just obsessed with what that origin means for Scooby's family life and his relationship with Ruby that she would send her son (who Scooby has never met!!!!) to stay with him for an indeterminate length of time without notice (by MAILING SCRAPPY IN A BOX NO LESS) while also having Scrappy arrive at Scooby with a full hero-worship situation going on. Like do you know how much potential that idea has?!?!?!?!? I could talk about the Doo sibling semi-estrangement (as it exists in my mind and nowhere else) for HOURS and what it means for Scooby, Ruby, and Scrappy like !!!!!!!!!!. Warner Brothers needs to hire me to rewrite this introduction ASAP

Shaggy: I'm not informed enough on the Rogers family lore to say too much about it, although I don't see Shaggy having too large of a nuclear family. He's someone I see with a lot of cousins though and aunts and uncles (and differing relationships with each, as seen in the 'I'm a man? Another first! Take that Uncle Dave!' or however it goes clip from bcsd) I can't evision what his parents would be like at all, although I'm sure they're very interesting people for naming their child NORVILLE of all things. After some quick googling, I've learned he canonically does have a younger sister, Sugie, which I could definitely fit into my image of him with a big enough age gap bet the two. Shaggy is someone I see as growing up pretty alone (without Scooby in the Grillo's origin though, which... ouch) but could definitely fulfill the youngest/er child niche within a large extended family.

VELMA: I like Velma as an older sister and I like Madelyn Dinkley. I don't have a ton ton to say about her origin other that I like the parts we've generally seen (especially the fear of clowns lol). Velma to me has always been a lifelong reader and I think that's something that's likely true for her parents as well. Not a huge fan of her SDMI parents, but I don't like any of the SDMI parents so that's not exactly a surprise here.

Daphne: For Daphne, lots of Scopby properties like to portray her family as pretty wealthy, and I think I'd agree on that assessment for her. However if I was going to pick between Daphne origins/family situations I'd definitely go with the BCSD one for sure. I like her as an only child much more than having a gaggle of sisters like in SDMI, and I think that tying into her quirks and how her family is rich gives a good explanation for many of her more esoteric skills. Basically what I'm trying to say is that she had lessons in almost everything under the sun growing up, no matter how weird or useless.

FRED: This is definitely the hardest one. Believe it or not I haven't gotten to the BCSD episodes with Professor Huh? yet so I know pretty much nothing but idk. LOVE how Fred has tragic backstories with villain!parents leaking out his ears that's sooo funny actually (THREE TIMES FRED. AT LEAST.) However. Idk. I'm a fan of Skip and Peggy. Like Fred's embarrassing overbearing normal parents is also so entertaining as well. So idk I'm pretty flexible with Fred. This man has no siblings though. When he was bored at home he talked to his nets or something

THE GANG: I don't have preferences really on how the gang as a unit came together, besides the edition of Scooby and Scrappy. It's just not an event that interests me a ton, mostly because I see it happening in very similar ways each time. Like either they're all friends and a mystery pops up and they solve it together and BOOM! Mystery Incorporated or they're mystery enthusiasts and a mystery pops up and BOOM! close friendship (and also mystery incorporated)

What song reminds you of being in middle school? All Time Low, The Maine, The Summer Set, You Me At Six, Sleeping With Sirens...save for ATL and SWS who I actually liked, in summary these were bands that the cool kids obsessed over; and wanting to be just as cool and to fit in, I tried to listen to their music only to find it all unimpressive and boring.

What was the first thing you learned how to cook? The only things I've ever learned how to make are eggs. For baking, cookies.

The typhoon was already in full force that morning but my mom and I wanted to just try taking our chances and see if our roads are still passable, or if there's even a flood at all in the village – long story short, it didn't take long for a village guard to stop us mid-drive and be like, "don't even try, [the flood] is way too high already" lol so back to the house we went.

Have you ever turned down a job offer? It's more 'chickening out' then turning it down; and it wasn't even a job offer yet. Basically, I was a fresh grad who got an interview opportunity at this company, but the interviewer was going to be this high-ranking, CEO-level guy from another country. As someone who was still completely inexperienced and new in Grownup World, it gave me stomach-turning anxiety more than excitement for my first potential job, so I ran away from it. I didn't ghost – I just lied and said that I was going to be unavailable due to a prior commitment or whatever and that was that.

In retrospect, amusing and kind of endearing to think about now. I've forgiven myself for it, haha. Apart from the position being not even something I wanted, I was also like 3 days away from the breakup that nearly killed me so just imagine how much my relationship had deterioriated by that point. I wasn't in the right state of mind, and had I pushed through with the interview I'm fairly confident I would have flunked it horribly. It was also peak Covid, so having to learn adulting during such a restrictive time felt very frustrating.

What’s the longest hospital stay you’ve had? For what? I've only had one hospital stay and that was overnight. I had a dengue scare which just turned out be a general low platelet count. No clue where it came from; my sister got diagnosed with the same thing and we were admitted to the hospital at the same time. My mom visibly lost a few pounds in the span of 24 hours out of worry.

Do you know anyone who doesn’t know the basics of using a computer? My grandma.

What was the last snack you ate? I'm currently having cinnamon breadsticks and a few Cheetos I fished out of its bag. Healthy living!

Sorry to bother! I hope you don’t mind me adding on the topic of Giyuu and Mitsuri because. I made that comic about Giyuu and Mitsuri friendship before, and It got pretty popular. I also fear that it may have caused some misunderstandings. I made that comic because both of them are my favs and I want them to interact even if it was an unpopular pairing at that time. 

I hope you don’t mind me rambling (in case there was a misunderstanding) that the idea wasn’t to make it seem like Mitsuri is Giyuu's older sister figure or that he only sees Tsutako in her. It just so happens that my comic focuses on how he was reminded a bit of Tsutako through her. Sometimes people do feel endeared by others when bits of them remind you of a loved one, but it doesn’t mean you actually see them as that person. Also, about Mitsuri being younger than Giyuu. Tsutako’s age wasn’t clear and it’s possible Giyuu has already outgrown her. 

Besides that, I can imagine them bonding over other things too. How Mitsuri, like Giyuu is also a lonely person, even if it isn't obvious at first glance. They are also both awkward too. I also didn’t want to make it seem like it was only Mitsuri who was “helping” Giyuu (I should have shown Mitsuris pov more, but comic paneling is hard orz) The idea is that Giyuu was also looking out for her! She messed up her hair so Giyuu is helping her fix it. Mitsuri is very insecure about her hair, so she probably worries that Giyuu finds it gross, Instead, he not only fixed her hair, but even give her a cute hairstyle. She was touched by it! I tried to subtly show the difference between Mitsuri and Tsutako here too. (Mitsuri wearing a pink bow instead of red, her hair being on the front rather than the back, her expression being more energetic etc)

I just like it because Mitsuri, while younger, does have the temperment of an older sister, while the inverse is true for Giyuu, and It reminds me a bit of Tanjiro and Giyuu. It isnt about trying to assign them in big sister/little brother roles, but more on me basing it from my own IRL relationships (I am also friends with people who are a bit younger than me but had an older sibling temperment, and I find them to be comforting to be around) I feel that Giyuu could also find Mitsuri comforting if he got to know her a bit more.

It's possible that Giyuu and Mitsuri being besties still doesnt make sense to some, and that’s fine. These are all just my personal hc that I want to share. I sooooo agree that Mitsuri deserves to be seen as her own person. Just because she doesn’t have a super tragic backstory, doesn’t mean that she doesn’t deserve to be comforted and validated too. In general, I definitely agree that female characters shouldn't be treated as only being a source of comfort for troubled male characters, especially bc Giyuu is a grown man himself.

I’m not super into KnY these days but I follow you and seeing yours and EVERYONE’S thoughts about the woobifying of Giyuu and how using Shinobu and Mitsuri as mother/big sis figures to him is a mischaracterization of him and his relationships was positively refreshing.

I don’t have much to add other than the fact that turning Shinobu into a mother figure when her trauma involves her forcing herself to grow up insanely fast feels disrespectful to me. Yes she is a medic and caretaker but she is that as her JOB, not her core personality (which is more vengeful and angry/frustrated, imo).

So thanks to you and all your followers for putting that stuff on my dash!

Of Jack-o'-Lanterns and Misperceptions

Summary: You carve pumpkins with two of Dream's sisters in the Dreaming!

Word Count: 1.2k (just a short lil thing!)

A/N: If you haven't read the comics, all you need to know about Delirium is that she's the baby of the family and I would protect her with my life.

The Dreaming is home to many odd and fantastical situations that one wouldn’t normally see in their day-to-day life. But even in a land like the Dreaming, seeing the little group that’s diligently working around a table that’s been set up in Fiddler’s Green gives inhabitants pause. One inhabitant in particular, upon coming across the scene, begins to fear for his life.

“Look kid,” Merv says nervously, putting his hands up in the air as if in surrender, “I don’t know what I did to make you hate me so much, but you didn’t have to show me in such a brutal way.”

You laugh, just barely glancing from your careful knife work to the pumpkin-headed man standing in front of you. “C’mon Merv, surely you know that carving pumpkins is a Halloween tradition!”

“Tradition or not, give a guy a little warning next time before you go around driving a knife through the same thing his head is made of.”

“To be fair,” the dark-skinned woman sitting across from you interjects, giving you a wink, “this was initially my idea.”

Merv groans. “Great, Death’s got it out for me.”

“Do you want me to try and make one that looks like you?” you ask, attempting to butter him up.

He pauses to consider this before begrudgingly leaning against the table. “...Yeah. Give it your best shot.”

It still tends to give you pause when you think about the fact that your boyfriend’s sister, the literal anthropomorphic personification known as Death, is friendly with you. Even when you meet up with her in your world, the Waking, you sometimes do a mental double take when you realize that you’re sitting in a park or enjoying a coffee with Death. The woman has made an effort to try and be a friend to you since you’re in a relationship with her brother – something you very much appreciate, considering there is a whole lot you don’t understand about that which you had believed to be fake until only a few months ago.

In fact, it was Death who had suggested this little project. She had popped by your home one night to say hello while you were watching Halloween, and had remarked how much she loved the movie. Though she couldn’t stay long enough to watch the movie in its entirety with you, you did both launch into a conversation about Halloween and everything enjoyable about it. She had mentioned how she loved to carve jack-o’-lanterns back when they were still made of turnips, and then a devious smile spread on her face before she asked if you enjoyed carving pumpkins.

That’s how you ended up here, in your lover’s domain, dragging a knife through a pumpkin and trying your hardest to beat Death in designing a jack-o’-lantern. How strange your life has become in recent months.

When Death looks up from her pumpkin and smiles, you already know who she’s looking at. Though you have no powers of your own, you can still feel Dream’s presence whenever he’s around you. When he places his large hands on your shoulders, you crane your neck around to look up at him with a grin.

“Hi, Morpheus,” you greet.

Morpheus, as is customary whenever he sees you (a true romantic, he is), kisses you softly. “My love.”

From across the table, Death makes a noise of endearment. “You two are just so cute, sometimes I cannot stand it!”

His lips twitch into a small smile, the most emotion he’ll show around his beloved sister. “Hello, sister.” Dream almost does a double take before amending his greeting. “Hello, sisters. Though I am pleased to see you both, I cannot help but be unsure of when it is that I invited you to my realm.”

“You didn’t,” Death says with a smirk. “Y/n did.”

You smile at Dream sheepishly. “We wanted to carve pumpkins, and this was the easiest place for Delirium to find.”

Delirium, the youngest sibling of the Endless, is currently staring intently at her pumpkin with her tongue poking out of her mouth as she draws on it with a marker. Nobody questions what it is she is attempting to accomplish.

“You are…carving pumpkins,” Dream observes, as if you didn’t just tell him what you’re doing. You share a look with Death over the table when he’s not looking, as if to say ‘men.’ “Why?”

“Because it’s almost Halloween!” you say cheerfully. “Surely you’ve seen jack-o’-lanterns in people’s dreams before.”

“I have. Though, I believe they were turnips and not pumpkins.”

You laugh. “Your sister told me the same thing, but that was also, like, two hundred years ago. You really need to get out more.”

“You wanna carve one, little brother?”

Morpheus shakes his head politely before sitting down next to you in a seat that he conjures from thin air. “I am more than content to just watch, thank you.”

And watch he does, though you think he watches how you interact with his sisters more than he watches the actual pumpkin carving. You can tell that this simple act, of you spending time with his blood, means a lot to him. If anybody has a complicated family, it’s the Endless. You know that they haven’t always been on the best of terms, even he and Death, and so it’s important to you that you accept his family as you’ve accepted him.

Though, you do still find it difficult to spend time with Desire, since they’re very conniving and just not a very good person. You’re working on it, though.

“I’m FiNiShEdDdDdD!” Delirium finally trills before turning her pumpkin around with her delicate hands to face you. “WhAt Do YoU tHiNk? ShE lOoKs LiKe ShE wOuLd MaKe A gOoD fRiEnD!”

She’s carved the features of a jack-o’-lantern’s face over and over again, creating a pumpkin with mouths, noses, and eyes that are in a variety of positions they are not typically found in and sideways or upside-down. After studying it for a moment, you look up and grin. “Looks great, Del. Want me to put a candle in it so that you can see it lit up?”

Delirium squeals and nods, her red curls bouncing around her face. When you place one of the electric tea lights inside the pumpkin and turn it so that she can see her masterpiece, she claps her hands together in excitement. Butterflies and tiny fish fly around her, the visible manifestation of said excitement. “I lOvE iT! dOn’T yOu ThInK iT lOoKs FaNtAbUlOuS, dReAmY? dEaTh?”

“It looks wonderful, sister,” Morpheus dutifully says.

“Fantabulous, indeed,” Death adds.

As Delirium chatters on about pumpkins and pumpkin pie and oh, the time that she found herself in a giant pumpkin with mice like Cinderella, Death listening good-naturedly, you glance over to see Dream watching you. You smile at him and kiss his cheek.

“Sorry for not asking before inviting your sisters into your realm.”

“Do not apologize. I find myself glad that you are on good terms with my sisters.” He lays a hand on top of yours. “Thank you for being so open to spending time with them. It means a lot, not only to them, but to me as well.”

“I like Death and Delirium. They’re fun to hang out with. Plus, they tell me embarrassing stories about you.”

He smirks. “Ah, so that’s been your plan all along?”

“It’s a fun, unexpected little perk.” You look over at Merv before looking at your pumpkin, making sure you’ve got his left eye just right. “Now, care to watch as I recreate your janitor on an inanimate pumpkin?”

As expected, Dream does more of watching you than he does watching the actual carving. Not that you mind, though.
