i see this album being a follow-up to right thoughts right words right action in a sense. a lot of the songs here started appearing, at least somewhat, in 2016. i think there were plans for a rtrwra follow up that was more 'on-theme' but it got scrapped due to ffs, and then alex got obsessed with disco for a little bit and hired a synthpop twink on guitar. now that we're back to somewhat normal, i think it's time for the post-rtrwra songs to shine. i also see a lot of the ychismb+2005 b-sides motifs happening here already (swallow smile, wine in the afternoon, l. wells, jeremy fraser, ghost in a ditch, walk away, fade together). alex appears to be the primary lyric writer now too so that influences everything you are about to read

Strange, lurching, I watched this in German without knowing enough to keep up and I believe my confusion added to the experience.

Atomic blonde (2017)

This is my favorite movie. This is the one that I can't stop rewriting in my fics. I can't get the "lies" soliloquy out of my mind. My soul is tied to this fillum. Hot insane woman does a lot of violence, kisses women, beats up a guy who truly deserves it. Iron Curtain Spy Nonsense.

Hackers (1994)

Am I depressing you? Good, watch Hackers to experience child-like wonder and also see a grown man skateboard down a foggy street in the middle of the night to harass the homosexual teenagers (and slim shady) he's beefing with.

Angel's egg (1985)

This is the kind of movie where you have to not try to figure out what's going on and instead let it take you by the hands, just experience it, just keep your mouth shut and your mind at rest and you can consider the implications afterward when its safe.

I watched this as a child and saw those beasts dissolve into bloody worms and apparently that left a lasting mark on my brain.

Nausicaä of the valley of wind (1984)

I actually read the manga for this one but this is a movie rec list, so please go watch this for the death and rebirth vibes, and some mild foeyay yuri.

Invasion of the body snatchers (1978)

Horror movie that's odd and disturbing and clearly betraying some better dead than red fears, worth it for the horrible despicable freakish noise the guy makes at the end while pointing at the viewer.

Strange days (1995)

Y'know the phenomenon of alt teens and preteens dating young adult men who are total and complete losers, including actual band members? It's not that this pre-dates any of that, but I believe it does a good job representing it through the lens of a modern fairy tale. Like when you watch this you have to realize this is wish fulfillment for people who want to be Sarah because their age-gap goth boyfriend in the real world is a manipulative disappointment.

Pacific rim (2013)

Love letter to the mecha and kaiju genre(s). Makes no sense, compels me though.

Eurotrip (2004)

This is the movie "Scotty doesn't know" is from. Some high schoolers fuck off to Europe and have the most misadventure possible. It's somehow exactly the kind of cringe humor you would expect from the 00's without being cruel or overly disgusting. I used to watch a lot of really bad 00's comedies and this is a good one I promise. Scussie.

Hamlet (1996)

Personality point, I think this is the best version on film because the guy actually looks like how I envisioned Hamlet. Ignore your girl! Avenge your dad!

Advantageous (2015)

This movie goes in on the connection between race and class in a sci-fi future where you can change the former through predatory, dangerous cosmetic surgery.

Gravity (2013)

This is my go-to movie when I need to sob like a sick little baby. Space travel as a metaphor for motherhood, spaceships as the womb, scientists are the babies who left their babies back on earth. It's about what you give up in the name of fulfilling your human urge for the unknown.

All clear on the western front (2022)

Thee anti-war fillum. Very well done. I never recovered from one of the final scenes to the point I wrote a final paper on it. Without spoiling it, the Ending gave me the feeling of when you're a kid and you want to go play, but you're grounded and you fall asleep listening to your friends outside in the street. I hope this sentence ruins your life if you watch this movie.

I do not care about the opinions of straight men who watch things uncritically, this is a good movie because of the depictions of poverty in the US. I don't believe this needed to be about the DC Joker this should have been a standalone art film about a mime.

I, tonya (2017)

Sufjan Stevens' song "Tonya Harding in Eb major" makes me so unreasonably emotional, so one day I watched this movie and then the film of the 1988 Calgary Olympics in the living room while all of my housemates had to sneak around in the dark. This is just a solid movie about ambition, betrayal, abuse, tragedy, and having to get over it and move on because you're not dead yet.

Phantom of the opera (2004)

Whatever was going on in Labyrinth, this is the adult version. Weird man in a sewer possessing a soprano. I think there's some gender happening here but it gets a little lost under the love(?) triangle.

Ouughhgh ough oh. Personality trait. Watched this because I kept listening to the musical soundtrack, love both but agree the themes are much tighter in the movie. This is just a fun schlock to tell teens life is stupid and difficult and bad things will happen, so don't abandon your friends.

Priscilla queen of the desert (1994)

Classic homo fillum, if you wonder why I write Gilbert Like That it's partially because of the mean little fruit from this movie. It's about the Aussie drag scene and who belongs in the queer community.

I'm not sure that I would call this a "good" movie, but it's a classic as far as I'm concerned. This is the "THIS IS SPARTA" movie.

The foreigner (2017)

I actually don't remember the plot of this one too solidly but the suspense and action were solid, and I enjoyed the setup. Good for if you wanna be really pissed off for two hours.

I don't know I think watching this movie changed my brain chemistry in very special ways. Guy fucking loses it and becomes a problem for his local community by kidnapping and torturing people who killed his family. Cathartic and vile.

I shrugged my shoulders and looked across the street to see an older couple walking together holding hands. “That’s nice…” I smiled. I began turning my gaze back to the flower shop to check if Yuta was out, until I heard someone scream. I flipped my head back towards the couple, and noticed a man fighting the older woman for her purse. “Hey!” I yelled and began to run over. Before I could reach the man, he pushed the older woman and ran off. I watched as her husband quickly knelt down to tend to her. “I’ll get him! I swear!” I yelled and took off over the guy. I ran as fast as I could towards the man, I watched as he took a turn into a small alley. I slowly approached the alley, making sure he wasn’t about to jump out and attack me. I then saw a head peep from behind a dumpster. I heard him scoff, “It’s just a high schooler…” he laughed as he walked out. “Now run off girly, before you get hurt. Just needed some quick cash, it shouldn’t concern you,” he said as he tried walking away. “Hey! I ain’t letting you leave with that purse!” I yelled. “And what are you gonna do about it?” He chuckled as he turned back. He rushed over to me, and I got in stance ready to fight back, but before I could land a punch the dumpster was thrown towards the man. We looked up and noticed the older woman from earlier. “We got your purse back!” I said, and handed her the bag. “Oh thank you so much, both of you!” She smiled. “And we made sure to call the police, we’d hate to have that happen to you again,” Yuta said. “Where’s your husband?” I asked. “He’s coming, he said he saw something on the floor and went to go pick it up,” she explained. “I see, well I’m glad you’re ok. That was a nasty fall,” I pointed out. “I may not look like it, but I’m one tough cookie. Just ask my husband,” the woman laughed. She quickly turned around, “Oh there he is,” she said. We looked over and noticed him carrying a bouquet of wildflowers. “The bouquet!” Yuta said in shock as the man walked up to us. “I saw you drop these, and I assumed that you were with our friend here,” he said as he looked over towards me. “Thank you!” He said as he grabbed the bouquet from the older man. “No problem, and thank you for helping us,” the man said, as he shook our hands. “We really appreciate it, and also you two really deserve each other. Going off to help a stranger, and you going off to back her up. Not a lot of people like that anymore,” the woman winked. I felt my face blow up, and I looked over to see Yuta also has a cherry face. “Th-Thank you miss,” I smiled. We said our goodbyes and headed our own way.

“What a crazy first date, huh?” I laughed as we walked up the stairs. “It was,” Yuta chuckled. “So happy you got the flowers, that person is super lucky,” I smiled. “(Y/N)… they’re for you,” he laughed. I turned around quickly, and stared at him in disbelief. “Well I was hoping to surprise you with flowers when I walked out of the flower shop, but…” he laughed. “They’re for me?” I asked, still in disbelief. “Well… I was hoping we’d be in a more romantic setting, but I was hoping if this date went well then…” he trailed off. “Then?” I encouraged him. “Then I was planning on asking you to be my girlfri-“ I cut him off. “Yes!” I said as I pounced on him. He caught me, but the flowers flew everywhere. “The flowers!” He panicked. “It’s ok, Yuta,” I smiled. “But how are you going to remember our first date?” He asked. “I got an idea,” I smiled as I cupped his face. ☕️ Musical from the last 5 years (lol) that i should listen to

my god *i* don't even really listen to many musicals from the last five years because i sort of stopped paying attention after like 2019 when the MT fandom on here died down considerably. yes i work in musical theatre. don't look at me

okay here are some of my suggestions in no particular order based on shows i've actually managed to listen to and enjoy

sing street - one of the great theatrical casualties of covid - the cast literally moved into the theatre on the day the broadway shutdown started and the subsequently postponed bway transfer has just never materialised. they did have an out of town production in 2022 though :)) anyway, love this album, one of the few MT cast recordings that makes it onto my general listening playlists because several of the songs also work really well as standalone pop tunes

& juliet - if you just want to have a silly fun time listening to a jukebox musical this is thee one. bonkers little plot but it's packed with bangers throughout and repurposes its pop soundtrack into a musical theatre context in ways that range from unexpectedly genius (turning britney's "i'm not a girl, not yet a woman" into a nonbinary anthem) to really stupid in the funniest way possible (an entire character is named just to set up a *NSYNC joke)

kimberley akimbo - 2023 best musical winner, a solid example of the typical contemporary musical theatre sound which handily fulfills both the niche of "i enjoy shows like dear evan hansen and want another emotional teen story" and "i want more good meaty lead roles for older actresses"

a strange loop - 2022 best musical winner, a meta show about a fat black queer man who works as a theatre usher and is writing a musical about a fat black queer man writing a musical. filled with commentary about race and sexuality, definitely one for if you want your musicals to be thought & discussion provoking

octet - i kind of went off dave malloy entirely around 2018 through zero fault of his own, god bless him, just because many of his fans were still being so annoying about the 2017 tonys. but i've heard good things about this show and maybe i need to actually get over myself and give it a listen

Nobody asked but over the last couple of days I decided to listen through every mainline Skinny Puppy album (all formal LPs + Remission which is for some reason considered an EP, never fully understood that) from beginning to end in order of release. I've listened to all these albums 5 billion times and know them more or less by heart but it occurred to me after the last show that I don't know if I've ever done this.

After each album I wrote a little Twitter-sized review of it and highlighted a few standout songs. This is, of course, because I originally did this on Twitter. It was a really fun little post-concert activity so I figured I would share it here too.

Maybe even a good introduction if I still have any followers putting off checking them out...? 👀

Remission (1984). The one that started it all. Kind of. Simpler than the rest maybe but still so iconic. “Far Too Frail” continues to be my favorite, hearing it live for one of the encores blew my mind. “Film” as the encore opener also brought tears to my eyes.

Bites (1985). Still simpler than later outputs but also still a classic. Has a ton of really underrated instrumental-heavy/atmospheric tracks, and “The Choke” and “Last Call” are perfect songs. “Assimilate” is legendary but unfortunately gets hardcore overplayed lol.

Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse (1986). The addition of DRG is palpable. SP starts coming into their own and sounding less like a Cabaret Voltaire tribute band. Lol. Moodier, more complex, and lush with dark soundscapes. “God’s Gift (Maggot)” is one of the best.

Cleanse Fold and Manipulate (1987). From the first beat of “First Aid” onwards, this is one of THEE quintessential Skinny Puppy albums. IMO the real start of their “golden era.” Contains some of my favorite songs of ALL time. “Addiction” is easily a no contest top 5 SP track.

VIVI SECT VI (1988). One of the greatest. Noxious war zones, sterile hospitals, choking, burning, cold clanging cages in animal laboratories. One of the darkest, most nightmarishly psychedelic, heaviest, absolutely masterfully crafted albums. “VX Gas Attack” remains unparalleled.

Rabies (1989). Hi Al. This album just oozes sex appeal. I never get tired of it. It has a deranged masculine militaristic machine gun energy unlike anything else. I’ll never tire of “Hexonxonx,” “Worlock,” or “Tin Omen.” And ending on the dreamy delirious “Spahn Dirge”… Goddamn.

Too Dark Park (1990). A lot of people call this one THE supreme SP album. It’s legendary. Pure unadulterated Skinny Puppy. Sounds like home. An endless barrage of chaos and stormy monstrous polluted amorphous landscapes. “Grave Wisdom” is an all time favorite ever.

Last Rights (1992). The most utterly mindblowing devastating masterpiece of an album maybe ever made. The cohesiveness of the themes, sounds, lyrics, imagery—pure art. It’s a terrifying and desolate hellscape. Flung into sonic Knowhere. “Mirror Saw” is pure perfect transcendence.

The Process (1996). I have some trouble with this album—It can just make me very sad. You can both feel and hear the devastating loss. Barren and hopeless. Still, it’s TEEMING with absolutely rocking, heavy, guttural bangers. “Cult,” “Blue Serge,” and “Curcible” stand out.

The Greater Wrong of the Right (2004). A personal fave. Forever enthralled by the dreary smoking futuristic cityscapes painted by the various textures across each track. An epic journey through destruction of civilization and the mind. “Goneja” is an easy top 5 SP song for me.

Mythmaker (2007). Used to struggle with it, was even my least favorite, but it’s grown on me and I love it. A high octane reality-bending journey through alien dimensions and human mythos. If Ogre’s alien Other belonged to an album it’d be this one. I adore “Dal” and “Pedafly.”

HanDover (2011). Grossly underrated and constantly written off, I ADORE this album. It captures a sort of dreamlike melancholic sharp surrealism unmatched by anything else, like rain falling softly atop a rusting metallic dystopia. “Gambatte” is a stand-out forever favorite.

Weapon (2013). A fitting end. Nostalgic familiarity rejuvenated with sharp crispness. This one taps deep into my imagination; post-apocalyptic fantastical mechanical wastelands haunted by ghosts of the past. “Plasicage” is an all-time fave, and I love the reimagined “Solvent.”

This was originally going to be used for an RP arc but uh I'm rather indecisive. It was either this or Hoshi wo Tsunagu. I don't know which one.

The arc is regarding Kirby breaking from his past trauma though, and learning that he didn't have to always stand on his own to become strong - his reliance on his friends is never weakness, but a strength, his connections are what brought him to the person he is now, a hero, traveler, whatever, and he shouldn't be ashamed of it. Both songs are really good, so I might just hold a poll within my friends.

But whatever. I don't know man *shrug*

Either way, I cannot wait to post more stuff here when I can, so please enjoy this. I made the background with FireAlpaca (which thankfully had some cloud brushes in their brush shop) and then drawn the rest with Inkscape and added text with Canva.

Penrose Song of the Day Day 26: Body Talks by The Struts ft. Kesha

I kept my word, this is pretty upbeat compared to the past sobriquet.

I have favorites. I know I do. I grade people on a curve. If I decide you're one of mine, you're one of mine. And if you're one of mine, you can do a LOT of stuff and I'm still claiming you.

I very nearly put a Kendrick song here (Which one to pick tbh lol. Meet the Grahams was chilling, and Not like US is gonna be a sticky one that one has club potential. It's already being played in clubs actually lmao), but the Drake/Kendrick stuff is kind of heavy and as fun as it is from the sidelines (And remembering the Millie Bobbie Brown stuff makes it easy to feel comfortable picking sides here), it would be a very, VERY difficult thing to conceptualize and write. It would be cheap of me to even delve. But musically, I am in a Hiss/Euphoria/Meet the Grahams headspace.

But it kind of got me thinking about stan culture. About ride or die fans. Maybe yeah of Drake, but then I started thinking about Swifties. About the Army (BTS). etc.

And well, it really is not smart to pretend things about you aren't true. So I gotta admit- I'm ride or die for Kesha.

She could sing the phonebook at me and not only would I thank her, but I wouldn't even bat an eye. I would listen religiously.

Kesha has some... questionable song content, especially back in the Dr. Luke days. Grow A Pair comes to mind as casually, incidentally transphobic and misogynistic. And I don't even care! I mean I do care. But it doesn't stop me from eating up any and all Kesha content that comes my way.

Timber? A song that, while pulsing and driving and acting as good pop music. Is not that deep. And Kesha is best part of that song but it's not a varied performance let's be real. Dirty Love with Iggy Pop? Such a questionable green heart on my spotify. It is not a good song why do I like it?

And the real answer is just the charm that is Kesha.

So it's always a relief to me when Kesha writes an absolute banger, or features on an absolute banger, and I think the song is not just my jam for being a Kesha song, but I think it's also, you know, good.

I have the pleasure of having heard both the version of this song with The Struts only, and the version with Kesha, and I can confidently say that Kesha adds an energy and power to the vocals that helps the song not be washed out by its own instrumentation. The sound mixing is just. Better. The song is fuller, and the vocals are punched up enough that they stand against the instrument backing. And I like what I'm hearing more.

And the song is a bop. It's a banger y'all. It's a fun song about attraction, with nothing more or less behind it. The reason these two are attracted to each other (and again, the song works better as a duet for that reason- the attraction goes both ways) is left up to you, and the idea of being "what they want tonight" isn't weird or gross so much as kind of. Suggestive, flirty? Like a good pickup line. Idk. This song is a song where my "Make song instantly better? Just add Kesha" is on full display.

She's got such a good, growly rasp to her voice that works well with a rock song like this. Kesha is a vocal chameleon to me somehow- I like soulful ballad Kesha, her voice has the character for it and she got them pipes. I like Rock Feature Kesha, she sounds growly and raspy and all that. Pop princess Kesha? She's got the dialect. She grew up swimming in the pop tank with Dr. Fucking Luke looming. She can do pop music in her sleep.

And this is where I stand. I believe any and all songs can be improved by adding Kesha. That's my cross to bear. That's the sin I embody.

Other artists I believe instantly improve any song they're on: Megan Thee Stallion, Beyonce, Maluma, Betty Who, Common, Carly Rae Jepsen, Victoria Monet, and Frank Ocean. They could polish literally any turd and I would stream it.

That said, I'd hardly call this song a turd. This song is just a fun fucking rock romp. This is what flirting with someone good at flirting feels like. Like you're playing jazz via conversation and the person talking to you, not only recognizes the volley, but sends it back in a way that encourages the back and forth. The frisson of attraction makes everything feel electric, like it's purposeful. Like it's meant to be somehow.

I like when a song makes me feel something- sometimes I get really wrapped up in feeling negative. But I have to remember that I like music that makes me feel something good as well. Feeling things reminds me that I'm alive. You could be dead right now. Go listen to something you love.

Veni Vidi Vici by Black Lips

I realized a bunch of songs I liked were actually in the punk genre after going to my first punk concert, and found this one while poking around a punk music playlist on spotify shortly afterwards. This song is now central to my music tastes and the charm hasn't worn off a year or so later.

Black Dresses by the Builders and the Butchers

The two kinds of country songs are ones where America is good because of a specific brand of consumer culture and ones where capitalism is bad because the devil said so. This is, very loosely speaking, the second kind. Something about this song makes my limbs want to move, so for a few weeks after I had first found it I used it to motivate myself to get out of my dorm room and head to classes. It's still a banger.

Bad Things by Cults

A friend once told me I like music from advertisements and I still haven't recovered. I found this one in a commercial for a hulu show I never watched and was totally obsessed. It's most well known for being sampled in She Knows by J Cole but I only found that out after playing it for my friends/ reading the youtube comments. A good song for being in your feelings.

Yellow Brick Road by Dylan Cartlidge

This one is really catchy. Maybe even a little funky. A little groovy, perchance. If I were a caterpillar this guy would be a wasp and this song a parasitic larvae capable of burrowing into me. Except the parasitic wasp larvae just wants me to bob my head.

Davy Crockett by Thee Headcoatees

This one is just fun. The way it sounds like they get rowdy and start shouting makes its energy infectious. "Gabba gabba hey (hey) - willy walla walla" is literally lyrical genius.

I set limits on which songs qualified for this list by making it so they had to be songs I had intentionally sought out to listen to within the past month or so, which left out some songs and bands I consider foundational to my music tastes but haven't listened to in a short while. Even so, I had trouble narrowing this post down to 5 songs, so I picked the ones that I was obsessed with at one point or another and played repeatedly for a period of two weeks or so. I also tried to give a cross section of the different genres I've been listening to lately to keep things interesting.
