Rewatching hetalia did this to me. So here we are.

Hetalia! Ukraine

This might be tricky to understand unless you grew up in Ukraine; but as we know, she is often depicted in hetalia holding a giant pitchfork. So around when the anime was made, there was a (marginal) politician in Ukraine, in charge of the radical party, Oleh Lyashko (Олег Ляшко), known for his striking appearance with a pitchfork during campaigns; (the dude behind her)

SO AS A UKIE I HAD TO DRAW THIS RAWRJKDSWCHRDSKJD

(The stuff she is saying comes from an insult phrase Lyashko often said as well about his rivals, «скотиняки» [skotyniáky], translating to something like «stupid animals»)

gilbert as a character to me is defined by the ruthless calculus of necessity he performs for what he believes to be the Best Possible Outcome. he's operating on and in a system that is foundationally structured atop violence and the resulting trauma of it.

on a national, cultural, existential level, he exists to perpetuate violence For The Good Of His People. servant-slave-soldier to the state, As The State. and that means he is constantly doing the terrible calculations that nobody else can stomach and he does it Exceptionally.

kick him in the face and gut him and he will put himself back together and analyse What Went Wrong and then strip himself of his human weakness until the only thing left is a machine hunter-killer and he will keep doing it until there's nothing left but the burning world he made.

and therein lies the tragedy: he is not a good person because he's neither good nor a person. and he knows this. but there is nothing else for him to be. any other route leads to annihilation. there is nothing to justify or redeem him and there is no freedom in death.

and it just breaks my heart. because there's nothing else he could have ever been. no chance and no choice. and he'll march into oblivion again and again in futile hope and desperate love for what he wants to be A Good Thing.

The World On A Plate aims to spotlight and celebrate food from all around the globe, and what better fandom for this project than Hetalia?

The goal is a collaborative recipe book. Artists will be asked to pick a character and a recipe from that country. Then, they will draw that character cooking/eating/with that food. In the zine layout, on one page will be the drawing and on the other there will be the recipe.

All this in addition to spread illustrations and writing!
