Maaan I love the optimistic advice "keep practicing and you'll get better at art" as much as the next artist, but it always rubs me the wrong way when that evolves into "just keep practicing and you WILL 100% succeed and CAN get into the industry."

It changes from good general advice to implying you're just doing something wrong if still haven't "made it" yet. Not in the industry? Well, you just haven't worked hard enough, obviously, as if there aren't plenty of other factors that play into "succeeding” in a highly competitive industry like art.

Don’t let advice that’s supposed to be encouraging turn into something discouraging 😭

I've got my new commute pretty much memorized and I've started listening to Welcome To Night Vale again during my drive (just finished episode 76) and been thinking about it.

WTNV pulls this fascinating trick where, because in it the profound has been made mundane, it in turn makes the mundane profound. And because the mundane is something we, in reality, experience all the time, it affects my perception of the mundane, just a little.

WTNV is always better than I remember it because the humor and silliness make my brain slide over the parts where it is a genuinely thoughtful, heartfelt experience (and also Cecil Baldwin's voicework cannot be accurately replicated by my memory, good grief the man is skilled). WTNV will have a skit about a teenager shapeshifting every day and, in-character, within this bonkers, silly universe, will have the frequently silly voice of the world say what I wish every parent of every teenager had gotten to hear.

WTNV will have escapades with operas and dragons and purchased consciousnesses and in the chaos will have me tear up over someone handcuffing the viewpoint character to his chair to prove that his faith was not misplaced. And a comedy character will, while insisting on a title no one will adhere to, take immense pains to protect others from himself (sort of) even at great personal cost.

And it works.

If you've never had the chance to listen to Welcome To Night Vale, I highly recommend it. I've been listening via the Youtube page just to avoid fussing with downloading stuff on my phone right now, it's all free and ad-free up to this point at the least, the voicework is fantastic, it's horrifying and ridiculous and sweet as hell.

EDIT: I was thinking that my one problem with it is that the stakes can be hard to gauge since death is so commonplace and the horrors are part of the setting but I think I'm going to contradict myself. I think it's ultimately fine (maybe not 100% to my taste but a lot easier to take in when I think about it this way) because: Night Vale isn't the story of Factual Things Taking Place In Night Vale. WTNV is the story of One Radio Host Passionately Talks About His Beloved Hometown And Community, and exact metrics are largely impossible in any case.
