i'd love one of those classic doctor who stories where the antagonist takes the doctor's companion hostage and threatens to kill them and for a few minutes the plot is the usual back-and-forth antagonist doesn't quite get round to killing them because plot armour... and then the doctor pisses them off a little too much, or time ticks too far, and the antagonist Fucking Shoots the companion.

just like that.

and the rest of the story is the fallout of that. not at the end of the story, not with the companion staying barely alive - they are dead the whole time. they do not come back. and the doctor has to deal with that.
