Sketch dump! Vol. 5
September 2022 (Part 1/2)
The first piece on top summarised my cosplay rush for Tracon 2022! The second is an old idea for a charm.
"SURPRISE!!"
Back in 2022 I hosted an art raffle for reaching 777 followers on Twitter! The winner would get their submas themed idea realised (which was their friends throwing a surprise party for the twins!). I wanted to make a little comic and have the bosses walk in their office where depot agents, Elesa, Drayden, Skyla, Clay etc. would be waiting with decorations and treats and games.
Emmet is all smiles of course while Ingo gets so emotional he could only whisper a "super bravo".
Not really headcanons anymore but still funny ideas.
1. Emmet gets clumsy when off-rhythm! He starts walking in curves if there is nobody else around to match his rhythm with.
2. Emmet spaces out/forgets to say things aloud when someone speaks too long or when things go off-script! His thinking gets interrupted easily.
3. Ingo sometimes bumps into doors because he is too used to automatic doors!
4. When things go off-script Ingo speaks too much and rushes in straight lines"
Also my little inexpensive sketchbook & my trusty tools! Mechanical pencil and eraser pen are life when scribbling my skrimblos smaller than a postage stamp!
More Ingo~ I utilise a wide range of sources for references, including CSP's poseable 3D models, they can come really handy with perspectives and proportions!
The second piece is my very first attempt at cosplay in Tracon 2022: Blingo! I walked in with a sequin hat, leather jacket, leather pants and high heel patent leather boots.
The hardest part of cosplaying Ingo is remembering NOT to smile ahaha!
Some hairstyle tests
I drew these for a huge submas art collaboration over Twitter hosted by @/mimizukeii!! It was technically my first art collab before I started arranging them myself with Aggie/Magma.
While looking for train related songs I found this cute nursery rhyme to go with the marching:
"Over the mountains,
Over the plains,
Over the rivers,
Here come the trains.
Carrying passengers,
Carrying mail,
Bringing their precious loads In without fail"
I wanted to compare these silly twins, planning to do something more silly with them later. Also a sketch of @/fukurow's butler designs I never finished.. The capes compliment them so well, I love them!!
Prequel to this piece! Emmet is so confident in himself he thinks Pierce wants to learn from him but is invited for a duet on the stage instead!!
Emmet has really great voice actors in Pokemas! I especially love how his english VA gives him that bri'ish/posh/sophisticated vibe while also soft and melodic! I know for SURE this VA/Emmet can sing, I can show you later!
One of my favourite sketches!! I wanted to add a bunch of characters in the BG reacting to this sonic blast of emotion over a performance!
Heyyy it's the smile buddies comic!! I really hope Ingo gets to interact with Marnie in Pokemas one day!!
I feel Ingo's eyes in the mirror panel is a little off in the final comic, I meant to keep it softer like in the sketch!
It's Nimbasa trio!! Idea inspired by submas EX uniform colors. Might continue this later!
Some BG tests for this piece! Compositing is hard but absolutely worth the effort, it can make a huge difference in the appeal of your piece!!
Practise piece drawing over a photo I thought was cool! I want to get more experimental with lighting and perspective!
'How's it hanging bro?' Who hung him up there anyway??
Sketch for this arguing scene! Something REALLY BAD needs to happen for them to end up that tense! Even if I want to present them close to the canon material I still want to put them in really challenging situations to see how far I can push their emotions!
Thank you so much for coming all the way down here!! This set was pretty loaded, I hope you enjoyed scrolling through all this ahah!

hi! i am not sure if you will have good advice for this but your photography guide made me think about this issue. i grew up quite poor (school supplies were a struggle every september) and now as an adult i am not as financially stable as id like. this has made me very scared to use any art supplies because im always thinking that im wasting them on not good enough projects or not good enough skills or similar thinking. however that leads to me having supplies bc of gifts and whatnot (ie watercolor paper) but not using it out of anxiety. do you have any advice? thanks!
There are two ways that I go about getting over this kind of issue:
Get out the supplies right now and start making any marks. Cut a piece of watercolor paper in half. Draw a line down the center of a page in grease pencil. Do anything to just start using it to get over the "can't open it, must save for special occasions/projects" mindset. Once you've broken the seal on a first use, it's a lot easier to use tools or notebooks or paints a second time.
Plan projects for yourself like they're assignments. Give yourself a deadline and materials list, write it up like a school assignment sheet, and then do the assignment.
And, if it helps to think of it this way: you're likely hesitant to use your materials because you don't want them "going to waste," but at the moment they are being wasted because they aren't being used.
It is solidly my opinion that art supplies used for art are never wasted; not all "art" is meant to be kept and a part of the process of creating art is practice, which should lead to massive piles of clumsily made, "bad" art that you wouldn't want to hang up on the wall but is nonetheless a part of the process of making art that you'd want to hang on the wall.
You may be looking at the watercolor paper and thinking "I shouldn't break into this because each piece of this paper needs to be something special to show that I value this gift" but you don't get better at painting with watercolors if you use them on printer paper. You need to use the paper (and the paints, and your brushes) to maintain and improve your fluency with the medium.
Many people are hesitant to "waste" sketchbooks or good paper or canvas or expensive paint because they think they are throwing away the good things they *could* make if only the had the perfect plan and create the perfect piece of art with each page and each new tube.
But these things are consumables. Your sketchbook is not a guitar, and it is not a finished song, it is a set of strings. The lovely watercolor paper is a gift for you to make art with, but it is also a gift for you to *practice* making art with and the practice is just as much a part of the gift as a finished artwork would be.
So you're not wasting it if you just get out your paper and start painting with no plan, or if you "mess up" a piece, or if you just use the paper for practice.
So, if you're trying to get yourself to use watercolor paper specifically, I have an assignment for you:
Watercolor Thumbnails Assignment
Materials: Watercolor paper, 2 colors of paint (your choice), Hard pencil Tools: Ruler, Small and medium brushes, Palette
Instructions:
Using your pencil and your ruler, divide the page into 10 equal rectangles.
Visit this website and click the "surprise me" button. Select 10 artworks to create monochrome thumbnails of. (you can click as many times as you need to, but the goal here is to do thumbnails of art that you aren't familiar with rather than seeking out art that you know well for this assignment)
Reproduce each of the images as a monochrome thumbnail in the ten rectangles you've marked on your paper. You don't have to mix a unique color for each rectangle, but you should mix a few different colors and use only one for each rectangle. For instance, if you are using green and yellow paint, some images should be yellow, some should be green, some should be green-yellow, some should be yellow-green.
Purpose:
To use your materials
Work on achieving different values with single colors by layering or diluting your paint.
Composition study
Time Limits:
Once you have collected your ten images and have your station set up, you should take no more than one hour to complete your thumbnails.
Due Date: July 20th 2024
___________________
If you are not familiar with watercolor, here's a good video on some of the basic techniques for painting with watercolor:
And this is a good example of a monochrome painting done in watercolor; if you want, you can watch the video and use it as a tutorial to practice getting a feel for monochrome painting.
youtube
Use this assignment to practice! Make use of the gift that you were given by familiarizing yourself with the medium and thinking about art and working in color.
I'm going to play along too and will reblog this post with my thumbnails on July 20th - anyone who wants to join in is welcome to do so as well.
And everyone please remember: time and materials spent doing something you love or practicing a skill you enjoy are never wasted. Even if you don't end up with a "good" finished product, you have learned something and that, in itself, is valuable.

SATORU, your muse 。˚✐~
— Satoru eases open the door of the house. You’re not home, so he doesn’t feel the need to make his usual grand entrance. Shoes are left at the door, jacket on the rack, and Satoru makes way to the bedroom. Once inside, something on your nightstand immediately catches his eye.
It’s your sketchbook; a now worn, leather notepad that he’d bought you months ago after the old one was filled. You rarely, if ever, let him see your artwork, so Gojo would usually resort to peeking over your shoulder to catch a glimpse of what you were working on. He always teased you for keeping your art a secret, but now that he has a chance to look at your projects uninterrupted, he hesitates. For a second.
Satoru flips open to the first page. It’s just random doodles of flowers and animals, ones he recognizes from the garden in the park you two frequent. The next page warrants the same mundane results: bugs and trees and the tops of skyscrapers and whatever random things that would grab your interest while you two enjoyed the heat of the sun.
The next page catches Gojo by surprise. It’s a bird, but not just any bird, he realizes. It’s a songbird, one he’d half-heartedly pointed out to you one day because he recalled reading about it online. You weren’t even listening to him, or so he’d thought. It’s kind of endearing actually that you’d take the time to draw it. And it’s not just the bird, either. It’s the macaroons he’d mentioned wanting to get one evening, a bouquet consisting of a flower Gojo’d randomly plucked and presented to you, a familiar pair of sunglasses resting in grass, dabbed over top with faded blue watercolor paint. Numerous doodles of such small memories.
Satoru continues flipping to look at your little illustrated photo album. Some of these drawings are of stuff he barely remembers talking about, like a cracked open piggy bank obviously referencing a story he told you in passing. Gojo doesn’t even remember why he brought it up, but you’ve immortalized it here in your sketchpad with pencils and ink.
The drawings only grow more detailed as he gets deeper into the book, and a proud smile stretches across Satoru’s face at your talent. Rapid sketches of buildings and passerby evolve into self portraits of yourself, and he thinks you look so captivating in all of them. Gojo takes note of the silly doodles of even himself in the margins of the paper. Him in his sunglasses, him wearing the flower crown you’d poorly put together, him surrounded by ice cream and candy and the plethora of sweets he so enjoys. His favorites are the inane drawings of you two together, tiny and inhabiting multiple corners of every page. Each one is a delightful surprise to spot.
Satoru turns the next page, and he’s sincerely taken aback. Drawings of eyes, and they all look alike. They’re so detailed, adorned with pretty lashes and shaded so beautifully. He doesn’t have to wonder long on whose eyes these are, the next page bursting with the color blue tells Gojo all he needs to know. He’s glad you’re not here to see his reddening face and the way his breath hitched. This page, the next few actually, are all dedicated to his eyes. They’re inked perfectly, some are at different angles, and you’ve managed to portray emotion into all of them. Satoru wonders if he could draw a picture of you and showcase the absolute adoration in your eyes the way you’ve done with his.
And it doesn’t stop there. Page after page, it’s all Satoru. Him sleeping with a mushed cheek against your chest, him drinking a soda, him looking out the window, him playing the game with Geto, when did you even draw these?
“Satoru?”
He quickly slams the book shut at your call, carefully placing it back on your nightstand and ushering himself from the room. There you are at the door, shaking the rain from your umbrella and leaving it on the mat near the entrance.
“There you are, love.,” you beam at his approaching figure, and Gojo squishes you in a warm embrace. “How was your day?”
Satoru kisses the crown of your head, and grins against your skin. He can’t wait to tell you all about today, maybe give you some more brilliant ideas to memorialize in your sketchbook.

How do you get that 3D-ish effect in your art (It’s so cool, and really makes the colors pop)
Oh well, Everything is purely playing with colors and there is no technique as such But...
Here, Little tutorial:
Starring: White Apple
First, we have our sketch, And it's time to paint it.
What I usually do is use the watercolor brush, I paint with this brush for everything (Maybe because it's the only brush I know how to use)
1. We use the watercolor brush and paint with small dots, We use bright colors as this helps with the colorful effect.
A little advice: paint with all the colors you can but always keeping the main color. Blue is a good shade.
2. Now blend it, with more color dots, Shape it with Paint.
3. When you think you have a firm base, Is time to make The Shadows: Use the black pencil brush and set it to 6 opacity, use it to darken the areas where the shadow is strongest.
Imagine that you are carving a wooden figure or making a sculpture, use that black brush as many times as you think necessary and try to give shape to the object.
Now You get it!
The texture you will get is somewhat square and funny, I like it, but it is still too early to leave it like that.
4. We mix again, we use some bright colors in the mix to lighten a little, since black can leave the colors somewhat opaque.
5. It's time to put up lights, to do so we will use bright colors like light blue and yellow. Remember that everything is with dots.
That colorful style comes from placing the bright blue and pink at random, you can do it too if you want, but where to place it is by instinct
6. Now my favorite part: If you think your drawing still looks dark, use the luminous filter to lighten it. This way you get a very bright image of your drawing, export it as a transparent photo
This part is more redundant, but it will give more brightness to the drawing if you need it.
7. Now we have two images, the original and the shiny one, we put the original on top of the shiny one. And now, using the eraser with the opacity at 10% we will erase the image, revealing the luminosity under it. We will erase how much light we need.
Since we have two images, we are going to export it as a only one.
8. We are already reaching the end, all that remains is to blend a little again, lighten and darken where necessary.
We erase the excesses and retouch and...
We have an apple!
I'm not lying when I say that I like more how messy it looks in the first phases, but sometimes you have to clean it so that it looks good with everything together.
Sorry if this answer is long, I got a little excited.

Another much overdue ask compilation! Some short-ish lore asks (Gale, Gort, DU drow relationships and pet-companion preferences) and a couple of art/advice ones sprinkled in. THIS IS BY NO MEANS ALL OF MY ASKS so as usual I appreciate everyone's patience!
I actually think he'd give them a pass entirely as soon as he noticed. Correct me if I'm mistaken but half-drow get No love from underdark drow and are usually surface babies right? So that fruit is miles away from the tree lol. I think he generally has a bit of a soft spot for mixed kinds since he himself feels like an amalgamation of sorts.
Thank you! They're kind of a pain in the ass to draw at times for that very reason but man I do like the look 😩if other people like it too then that makes it all worth it!
THAT'S TRICKY TO ANSWER BECAUSE OFTEN TIMES I'M NOT... REALLY TRYING. I've draw a ton of horror comics for mine and my partner's series' SAD SACK and SORTIE, so I think it just comes naturally to me 😅 also I do genuinely find expressive and, uh, rugged faces more attractive? (I think they look rugged, again that's what people tell me at least.)
I think the secret might be adding bits of realism in there. I get a lot of comments about the wrinkles and eyelashes I add to my art, as well as the way I draw individual teeth (though I've lately been making an effort to simplify my style in favor of drawing faster, so I haven't done that as much or in as much detail.)
Both symmetry and the lack of it can also add to that effect. I have employed both facial unevenness and almost point-perfect symmetry to achieve something a little frightening or otherworldly in my work. [MORE UNDER THE CUT]
Thank you so much!!! The contrast is very much intentional, that's what DU drow's character is all about ;)
Hahah well I somewhat doubt Bhaal would care that his spawn gets named, but either way he stripped himself of his name as soon as he killed his foster parents and abandoned the Underdark. He had a drow name that I jotted down somewhere but it's completely irrelevant because nobody has used it since he was a child, and he doesn't remember it (even pre-tadpole/having his brain scrambled.) Here's a little write up about his origins that might shed some more light on that: https://meanbossart.tumblr.com/post/739688837431836672/did-drow-ever-have-a-childhood-before-the-temple
And about his original drow-given name and the reason behind it: https://meanbossart.tumblr.com/post/741350986692591616/drow-had-to-have-been-given-a-name-by-his-adoptive
Everyone just referred to him as his supposed race, or as Bhaalspawn or Bhaal's child, and any other similar titles. Orin called him "kin" and "brother" and Gortash likely called him his associate. Post-tadpole the camp grows entirely used to calling him "the drow" and he has no desire to change that or to choose a proper name.
THANK YOU BOTH SO MUCH😭 no reason to be intimidated, I'm just some rando drawing BG3 fan art LOL I've been drawing since I was a child, and started taking it semi-seriously when I was 16 years old, so twelve years ago! That's around the time where I got my first non-display tabled and used that well into my twenties, prior to that I only did stuff on paper and liked to do inks color with pencils. I never really ventured into traditional painting at all except for a little bit of water-coloring in college.
Traditional and Digital art are very much different beasts. Which one you want to start with is, in my opinion, just dependent on what you want to do. Digital art gives you a lot of tools that makes learning easier, but you might find yourself having much steeper of a learning curve if you ever decide to do traditional art instead. If you want to be good at both, you need to practice both, since the skill doesn't entirely translate from one medium to the other.
Naturally you will be able to draw well on either, it's just... Different. I will say though, that I think if you're still learning you should use whatever allows you to look directly at what your hand is doing, so either traditional or display tablet/Ipad. I have no idea what a non-display tablet would do to a beginner, but remembering my experience with it I feel like it might be a huge detriment to developing the skill (feel free to share your experiences in the replies if you disagree, as I would definitely be curious to read them!)
YOU KNOW ME BABY IT WAS MESSY AND COMPLICATED the tldr.: is that they were "buddies", absolutely no romance intended there on either mine or DU drow's part, but due to his nature the friendship was extremely weird.
Here's a couple of replies where I go into more detail about it: https://meanbossart.tumblr.com/post/739191190871818240/i-dont-have-a-particular-question-in-mind-sorry
https://meanbossart.tumblr.com/post/744952815768764416/so-not-sure-if-youve-covered-this-but-i-thought
That's definitely reserved for the vamp LOL DU drow very much enjoys when Astarion teases and fusses over him, and while Astarion probably got a kick out of acting that way around such a big and scary looking guy at first, I think by "now" (later and post-game) he's pretty much immune to DU drow's looks and just enjoys doing it in earnest.
He's not at all averse to being touched (even rather intimately) by close friends, but he wouldn't be quite THAT vulnerable with anyone else.
HE REALLY DISLIKED GALE... He irked him out by seemingly fostering a rather persistent romantic interest in him for at least half the time they spent together (very much based on my interpretation of their in-game interactions at the time, though my Gale might have been a little bugged.)
But also they had a... Fairly in depth relationship still? Gale was a staple in my party, and even though I antagonized him constantly by the end of the game it still felt like they had so much weight in each other's lives, if that makes sense. I might need to do a bit of an "update" on the DU Drow/Gale lore sometime, I feel like I've had some thoughts since that warrant more exploration of their dynamic (you can find a lot of old asks about it if you just search the Gale Dekarios tag in my blog though).
The gist of it is that DU drow found him arrogant and duplicitous, his constant optimist irritated him to no end and felt like it veiled a stream of self-pity (two things DU drow despises) Gale's attempts to get through to him only added insult to injury. By the end of the game he decided to pursue the crown of Karsus and this only lost him even more respect in Drow's eyes, seeing as he doesn't value godly power at all.
I was pretty overwhelmed by the game at the start so I actually missed a lot LOL including Scratch. I did get the owlbear cub though, which DU drow gladly welcomed into camp since it was injured - but I think he would have wished for it to remain a wild animal and to return back to it's home after it had grown up a bit. He didn't really make a "pet" out of it more than he just looked after the little guy in the way it's mother might have, probably with Shadowheart's help.
He wouldn't be opposed to proper pets though if one were to stumble into his life. He'd definitely be more of a cat guy because of their independence and strong little attitudes.
It is very hard to build proper rapport with him. He will be "friendly" to most people who have a good sense of humor about them, but friendSHIP is another thing entirely.
I think it's kind of circumstantial. He's very economical in his relationships and doesn't really seek them out at all - so a situation where he's forced to be in someone's company might be the only way to develop a bond with him, as he doesn't appreciate insistence either and that's more likely to push him away. He doesn't value status or titles either (kind of looks down on them really) so that won't help.
I think he just likes people who are true to themselves and their nature, sometimes even if the nature is one he disagrees with at it's core. This is why he liked Gortash, why he and Shadowheart got along so well, and why him and Astarion fit together so seamlessly despite seeming so different. Likewise I think it's why he didn't jive with people like Gale or Wyll, because they seemed to be rather... Dishonest with themselves and their own end-goals.

Do You Believe In Fate? // Pt. 1 // Aegon II x Reader
Artwork: @emilykaldwen // Beta: @exitpursuedbyavulcan
Summary: Falling in love with Aegon wasn’t easy. You would think the years gone by would make it less difficult but it turned out that was not the way fate worked. Fate brought you together but would it keep you apart as well?
Warnings: eventual smut, bodily harm, gore, hurt/comfort
A/N: I tried posting it all at once but Tumblr said it was too long so I guess I'm breaking it into parts lol
Part 1 // Part 2 // Part 3 // Part 4 // Part 5 // Part 6
Aegon has always been loud, that’s just who he is. And he was your neighbor. As cliche as it was, you fell in love with him. It wasn’t all at once. It was one year, one step at a time. You always found yourself drawn to him in some way. You swore up and down that there have been glances between you two over the years, lingering touches, soft words. It all happened so quickly that you could never be sure if they were real. Despite everything life threw at you and Aegon, you two would always find each other, even if sometimes you didn’t want to.
Being two years older than you, Aegon acted like he always knew better than everyone else, especially when it came to his younger siblings, Helaena and Aemond. You and Aegon were civil at most. A passing nod here and there; a kind smile every now and then. When you were younger there were rarely any genuine conversations but he was always around. Always around you.
Unlike your relationship with Aegon, you were close to Helaena and Aemond, always have been. Helaena was your best girl. Together you two would giggle over boys and girls and talk about your favorite things. Aemond was your best guy. You would work on homework together and have debates simply for the fun of having a debate.
Within the first few years of meeting Aegon and his siblings, a steady rhythm between the four of you was found. You’d hang out with Helaena and Aemond while Aegon would do his own thing near you three. Most of the time Aegon was on his Gameboy but he was always paying attention. Sometimes you thought that he needed friends, that he should join you and his brother and sister, but his attitude would say something different. Sometimes, the three of you would try to play somewhere away from Aegon but he would always end up in the same room anyway. You considered it a lose-lose situation.
“Aegon, come play with us!” Helaena called out.
“Let me think about it.” Aegon waited a few seconds. “No.”
Aemond picked up the biggest dragon and flew it over your head. “If you’re just going to sit, go sit somewhere else.”
Aegon stuck out his tongue. “Just because you said that, I’m staying, little brother.”
Aemond cringed. He hated being the youngest of the three.
You rolled your eyes and continued to play with your dragons and your blocks. You focused hard on making the most perfect castle for everyone’s dragons to live in. Red, blue, and yellow blocks were stacked on top of each other with a yellow triangle block adorning the top of the castle as the roof.
You were admiring your hard work when a thought occurred to you. “Let’s make flags for our castles!”
Excitedly, you turned towards your friends only to find them already on their feet on their way to grab art supplies. You laughed as you got up to join them but stopped at the doorway. You didn’t like that Aegon wasn’t joining you.
“Would you like to make a flag, Aegon? I can make you your own castle, too.”
“Pft, I’m eight, I can make my own castle,” he proclaimed. He got up from his comfy chair and put his Gameboy down. “But yeah, I’d like to make a flag.”
You gave him a big grin. “Yay!”
Aegon followed you as you led the way to the big dining room table that was now littered with art supplies. Helaena and Aemond made sure to get everything. There were glue sticks, pom poms, crayons, markers, colored pencils, paint, paper, scissors, and little sticks for the flags. Helaena even pulled out her special foam stickers for the occasion.
“Come on, you guys! You’re slow!” Called Helaena.
She was already working on her flag, picking out the stickers she wanted. The outline of a butterfly was on her paper, colored with purples and pinks. You peered over at Aemond and saw the outline of a dragon blowing fire.
You turned to Aegon. “What are you gonna put on your flag?” you asked.
“Oh, I know exactly who’s gonna be on my flag.” A mischievous smile snuck its way onto his face.
Your eyes widened in horror at the implication but you caught yourself before you could say anything stupid. Aegon strolled into the room and plopped himself into an empty chair.
You took in all the art supplies laid out in front of you. A smile spread out across your face as you reached out and grabbed whatever caught your eye. Crayons of various colors were soon in a pile in front of you. Ideas bounced around your head and it was hard to pluck out just one. Thinking hard, you turned your attention to Aegon, curious to see what he was working on. You couldn’t see much but you did see a swarm of purple. Just then an idea popped into your head.
“And done!” Aegon exclaimed as he jumped out of his chair. Even though he was the second last to start on his flag, he was the first to finish. Aegon stood tall and proud as he showed off his flag. “I present to you the flag for the House of Waluigi!”
A once white piece of paper now had a carefully drawn picture of Waluigi from the Super Mario games. He was tall and gangly and had a long, pointy nose that Aegon had extended all the way to the edge of the paper. His purple hat covered his eyes almost completely but a clever glint could still be seen. Waluigi’s limbs were just as long as his nose, if not longer. Aegon drew him almost like a long legged spider creature.
It brought a chuckle out of you, seeing the flag. It was just so…Aegon. He locked eyes with you and smiled when you laughed and you felt yourself blush. It was a simple thing, and you didn’t know why, but it made you happy for some reason.
“Okay, I’m next,” Helaena said. She made a big deal of folding it up as she stood up so no one could see it. Slowly, she unraveled it. “Ta-da!”
Helaena’s flag had a butterfly with blue and green wings on a pink and purple background. It had a giant smile on its face and curly antennas that made a heart at the top of the paper. It was bright and colorful, just like her.
“I guess I’m next,” said Aemond sheepishly. There was no flourish in his showing of his flag but there was still a glint of pride.
Aemond’s flag was black with a large green dragon breathing fire. It was fierce, despite being drawn by a four year old. “Her name is Vhagar and she’s the mightiest dragon!” he let out a giant laugh.
Giggles erupted from all of them. Aemond was sweet and quiet, no one really thought he would choose a dragon for his house.
“I’m last so that means mine will be awesome!” you said between giggles.
You took a breath and flipped your paper over to reveal your flag. It was a three headed dog, with one head looking silly and lopsided and the other two looking fairly serious.
“He may not breathe fire but this dog is really big and can probably fight your dragon, Aemond,” you teased. “And her name is Jeremy Triangle Dot but we call her Dot for short. Mainly because Dot is the boss. She’s the middle head.”
Aemond rolled his eyes. “Vhagar is a dragon. A dragon.”
“I bet if I put Waluigi on Dot we could defeat Vhagar!” Aegon jumped in.
“Hey, not fair!” Aemond pouted.
“It’s okay, Aemond. My butterfly will be super big and protect you with her wings.” Helaena piped up.
“Auntie Alicent!” You called out for your friends’ mother. She was a mother figure for you as well. “Look at our Houses! Who would you pick?”
Alicent came to the table and smiled at all of you.
“They all look amazing! I’m afraid I can’t pick one house. But we can say that I rule over all your houses as a queen,” she joked.
“Queen Auntie Alicent!” you cried.
“Queen Mother!” the siblings yelled in response.
“Okay, Queen Mother I am then,” Alicent laughed and messed up Aegon’s hair. “You children are so creative. Would you like smoothies?”
“A strawberry one!” Aegon yelled out.
“Yes, yes, I know, Aegon. I’ll get you all your favorite smoothies.” She left after pressing a kiss atop all of your heads.
The four of you spent the next two hours making up stories of your Houses and how they all lived together in the same kingdom. The House of Waluigi warred with the Vhagar House while Butterfly House and Dog House stayed neutral through almost everything. The only time those two Houses warred was when the kingdom's flavor of ice cream had to be chosen.
It was the first time you, Helaena, and Aemond had fun with Aegon. For once, Aegon wasn’t on the side playing on his Gameboy or doing his own thing. The four of you grew together; the relationship between the siblings being the best it’s ever been and the relationship you had with them being built on a strong foundation.
Seven years went by and you were all still as thick as thieves. The only difference was that you found yourself hanging out more with Aegon than Helaena and Aemond. It wasn't noticeable to anyone else but it was to you. You found yourself sitting next to Aegon and talking to him more. Whenever you were playing a game with the siblings you were always on the same team as Aegon.
Together, the two of you were inseparable, even at that young age. Through some sort of finagling, your mother and Alicent got you, Aemond, and Aegon all on the same football team. Really, though, the three of you should not be in the same age bracket. To make things a little even, however, you and Aemond, at the age of ten, played with Aegon’s team; them at age thirteen. Nevertheless, it was chaotic fun for the three of you. Helaena, on the other hand, preferred to stay off the pitch and cheer you on from the sidelines.
“Aeg, through! THROUGH!” You called from the other side of the field. If he would just pass the ball, you could sprint through the two defenders in your way and take a shot at the goal without being offside.
Aegon was being a ball hog, playing around with the ball just to show off and keep it away from the opposing team. The opposing team actually being the Targaryen’s cousins’ team.
“Aegon, focus!” you tried to get his attention.
Eventually, Aegon looked up and saw your plan. He gave the ball a strong kick. It flew through the air, over you and the other defenders. You sprinted as fast as you could. Since you were behind the defenders when Aegon kicked the ball, if you got to it before they did you would be safe to continue towards the goal without any penalty.
One of the defenders, a cousin of the Targaryen siblings, Jace, came up next to you, also sprinting his heart out. The two of you locked eyes in a heated battle of dominance. Smirking at him, you dug deep for that extra burst of speed you needed to beat Jace to the ball.
The ball was still making its arc in the air when you finally passed Jace just a tiny bit. When it hit the ground it bounced once. Twice. Three times before you were able to catch it with your foot. Jace was right behind you. Already you dug yourself into the ground, ready for any hit from him that could push you off the ball. You dribbled fast, dodging the defenders that have come up to catch you. Swerving in and out you saw the perfect opportunity to take a shot. Grabbing that burst of energy deep inside you, you gave one final push so it was just you and the other team’s goalie. He dived at you but you were quick to avoid him and kick the ball to the back of the net.
Aegon whooped and threw his hand in the air before tackling you in a hug. Helaena and Alicent were cheering loud on the sidelines and Aemond jumped up and down in his goal box, getting ready for the next kick off.
Jace started the kick off. He passed it to his little brother, Luke, and they went straight for the goal. Pure force. That wouldn’t work, not with your team to stop them. Luke was fast but you were faster. You caught up to him easily and fought for the ball. You were able to kick it out of his control and pass it on to Aegon. Aegon took it and tried to boot it down the field but Jace got the ball back before he could. He was about to reach out and grab Jace’s jersey.
“Aegon!” you warned him. He didn’t need to give the team a free kick, not now.
Aegon looked at you and scowled but quickly replaced it with a playful wink. Then off he went, chasing after Jace.
Jace was a decent distance from the goal box when he let the ball fly. It didn’t actually go through the air, but was a fast and strong kick that stayed on the ground. Luke followed the ball and Aegon followed Luke. As Aemond dived for the ball, Luke attempted to slide tackle the ball out of Aemond’s reach. Instead of hitting the ball, though, Luke hit Aemond’s eye cleats up.
A scream of pain.
Blood.
So much blood was pouring out of Aemond’s face.
Luke just sat there, stunned at what just happened. Jace was quick to run to his younger brother and make sure he was okay but of course he was. He wasn’t the one who got cleats in his eye.
You grabbed Aegon’s hand and ran him over to his brother.
“Aemond, you’re gonna be okay,” he told his brother.
Aemond was holding his face with one hand. The goalie glove he had on was soaked in blood. He couldn’t speak. All he could do was barely shake or nod his head.
Alicent was running onto the field. “Aemond! AEMOND!”
Coach Otto, Alicent’s father, also ran to Aemond. He picked him up effortlessly. “I got you.”
Aemond mumbled something but you couldn’t make it out.
“Keep that hand on your eye, gotta keep the pressure there.” Coach Otto turned to his daughter. “Meet us at the emergency room.”
Alicent nodded silently. She looked at her children, her children and you. “Helaena, Aegon, and my dear, are you alright?”
Helaena nodded her head. She was in shock. You went over to her and gave her a tight hug. She held onto you hard.
Aegon just lowered his head. He didn’t say or indicate anything. All you could tell was that he was angry.
“I’m… I’m fine. I think,” you told Alicent. “I want to go with you to the emergency room. Is that okay?”
Alicent enveloped you in a hug of her own when you let go of Helaena. “Oh, my dear, of course you can.” She let you go. “Come now, all of you.”
With Alicent leading you all, you ran to the car and piled in. Alicent was normally a very safe driver but this time she was aggressive. When you arrived at the emergency it was clean. Almost too clean. You and Aegon stood out in your dirty football uniforms. Holding Helaena’s hand, you followed close behind Alicent.
“My son, my son, Aemond Targaryen was taken here. He was being carried by my father. There was blood pouring from his face,” she was telling the front desk.
“Yes, him,” the lady at the front desk seemed to be in no rush.
“Please, I’d like to see him.”
“You’re going to have to wait a bit -”
Aegon snapped. “Let us see our brother!”
“Aegon!” cried Alicent.
“Aegon, please, everything is going to be okay,” you tried to comfort him.
The lady coughed. “As I said, you’re going to have to wait. He was taken in for emergency surgery.”
Alicent’s face lost all color. “But, he’s alive, yes?”
“He should be fine.” The lady’s eyes softened. “Take a seat, it might be a long wait.”
“Thank you,” Alicent nodded her head.
You grabbed Aegon’s hand and took him aside to some chairs in a corner. Once you got to them, Aegon yanked his hand out of yours.
“Aegon, what’s going on?”
“What’s going on? My brother is in a freaking surgery because I couldn’t keep the ball away from our side. That’s what’s going on.”
“It isn’t your fault he got hurt. He’s a goalie, he knows the risks.”
“That risk shouldn’t be losing an eye!”
“It was Luke. You know it was. He shouldn’t have slide tackled like that. It’s illegal.”
“Yeah, and look where that got him. Luke isn’t the one facing the consequences,” Aegon spat. “Instead, it’s my little brother!”
You tackled Aegon in a hug and held him tight. His breathing, once rapid, slowed down. You felt his arms slowly circle around you, as though he was scared to do so. One deep breath. Aegon lowered his head to your shoulder and you felt his shudder. He was crying.
“It should’ve been me,” he whispered against you.
“Shh, I’m right here for you.”
You held him close and didn’t let him go. You’d never let him go.
By the time Aemond got out of surgery, Aegon was asleep with his head on your shoulder. Aemond had lost his eye. He came out with a white gauze taped over where his eye should’ve been. You shook Aegon awake when Alicent brought him over. Aegon looked at Aemond and instantly guilt filled his face.
“I should’ve done something. I’m sorry,” he told his brother.
“You weren’t the one who slide tackled into my face,” Aemond offered him a weak smile.
“He’s right Aeg,” you bumped him with your shoulder. “Everything is gonna be okay.”
After Aemond lost his eye, Aegon started to change. You don't know whether it was just because he wanted to or if it has something to do with not being able to protect his brother. He was more protective of Aemond but he started losing himself. His temper was a little shorter and he learned to hurt people with words. It was as though his thought process was that if he couldn't protect him then he might as well do nothing.
Throughout middle school and junior high he made friends with kids…different from you and his siblings. They were wilder and louder. It seemed as though Aegon thrived with them. He soon started to taunt you and his brother and sister in front of them but would be quick to apologize when you'd walk home together. Away from everyone else. It was as though Aegon, the real Aegon, wasn’t good enough to be at school. Instead, he created this caricature of himself who’s even more obstinate than he already was. For a while it seemed as though he thrived on the attention but you could see it in his eyes that it was tiring. Yet he kept it up.
His relationship with Helaena and Aemond faltered. They were no longer the close siblings they once were. Aegon’s actions outside of home began to drift in. He would ignore Aemond, order around Helaena, and make snide comments at both of them. Your relationship with him changed, as well. He was less genuine with you, his jokes were even more crass than they used to be, and he’d ask you to get to know some of the other girls so he could know who to flirt with.
But there were still small moments when you thought everything would be okay. You’d share a sweet smile with him over a stupid joke. He’d tease you by taking away your water bottle but then playfully give it back. Every now and then he’d surprise you with a big bear hug but then linger just a little bit. Aegon would look at you sometimes and refuse to look away, even if you caught him. If he saw that you caught him, though, he’d play it off with a cheeky wink. When he thought you weren’t looking you could see how soft his eyes were, how they lit up when he looked at you.
Those moments would never last too long. As soon as someone else would sit next to Aegon he broke out of whatever spell he cast on both of you. It was like nothing ever happened. Like you two never even met. You thought you’d get used to the disappointment and dull pain in your heart but you never did. Your emotions were bottled up and they festered deep inside you, ready to burst open at any moment.
“Why do you do that?” you asked Aegon one day.
The two of you were at his house working on some homework.
He looked at you, confused. “What do you mean?”
“Why do you hang out with them?”
“You mean my friends?”
“Yeah, them.” You leaned back in your chair.
“Because they’re my friends,” he said slowly.
“But they’re nothing like us. Me and your brother and sister are on completely opposite sides.”
“I’m allowed to have more friends, it’s not a competition.”
You looked at him, wondering if he was avoiding something else. “Okay. I just worry about you hanging out with other people, especially them.”
“I’ll take care of myself, don’t worry.” He gave you a reassuring smile then returned to his work.

content warning(s) :: none!
sypnosis :: miles is spending the evening with you, the tv playing in the background. he decides you look pretty on paper. requested here.
word count :: 0.587k
Miles loves rainy days, but he loves them more with you—the soft hum of your tv playing as your fairy lights add a soft warmth to your bedroom, the rain drumming against the window.
You look beautiful, undone for the night, wearing the matching pajamas you insisted on buying the both of you. He loves seeing you relaxed. He loves the calm you bring after a long day that he melts into. He loves you.
And maybe that's what compels him to grab his sketchbook from his backpack, taking out his pencils and markers. He takes in the details of your face, following the edges of your nose, your eyes glowing in the reflection of your lights and the tv. He copies every one of them on the paper. You occupy numerous pages in his sketchbook already—what’s wrong with another?
It's rough at first, a loose sketch of the more vague pieces of you and the window in the background. Miles takes in the different colors, the warmth of the room bouncing off your skin, and the changing colors of the scenes, and he mimics them with his pencils and markers.
Miles steals you from the world. He swiftly curls your image into his fingers and lays you flat on the paper, carefully tucking you away before the world can steal you back. He will have that peaceful picture of you forever, and Miles wants the world to be jealous of that. He wants it to envy him for being able to keep that exact moment of you forever because the world only got it for a second.
The show is a few more episodes in when he finishes—you've changed positions, your head resting on your mountain of stuffed animals and blankets, but he still managed to copy you perfectly.
“Miles,” You say, his eyes moving from his sketchbook and up to you. Your eyes are slightly droopy, your voice just slightly a grumble. “What're you drawing?”
The way you say drawing makes him feel like a kindergartener with crayons. Suddenly, his art has become a scribbled stick figure. “Just a doodle.”
“Can I see?” You ask, and it feels like it'd be illegal to say no—even though he knows you'd completely understand if you did. He hands you the open book with a hint of embarrassment. He's sketched you so many times before but rarely shows them to you. He worries you'll think they're terrible.
You grab it as if it will tear at the seams if you're not delicate, but you beam when you finally see the page. You pull it onto your lap, taking in every little detail, completely mesmerized in a way Miles wasn't expecting.
“Oh my god,” You say, the smile growing, and Miles wants to copy that onto paper, too. “This is amazing, Miles. Really.”
He can't help the way he smiles at your compliment. It's an ego booster, almost. His parents have showered him with comments about his creativity, but they've never affected him much because they're his parents. Yet when you say it, it's something completely different. He values your opinion and cradles every comment you have close to his heart. “Do you have more? Not one of me! Just more art you'd be okay with letting me see.”
“You can flip through all of it. I don't mind.” He says, scooting closer to you. You grin again, and he swears it's the prettiest thing in the world, and he knows it will look just as pretty on paper.

come get your very own crab drawing!
hi everyone! if you follow me i'm sure you have seen me reblog lots of posts about what's happening in palestine. i personally don't have a lot of money to donate, so this is what i've decided to do:
if you send me proof that you have donated to any of the organizations listed below the cut, i will draw a silly little crab for you!
here are some examples and how much to donate for each kind of crab.
for only $1 USD a friend like this could be yours!
for $3 USD:
for $5 USD you can have something a little fancier:
if you donate more than $5, you can choose between multiple crabs or one even nicer crab! this can be sorted out on a case-by-case basis.
for donations over $30 USD, i will paint a watercolor crab for you!
some organizations to donate to and further details about getting your very own shitty crab drawing are below the cut! free palestine!
here is a list of organizations and groups you can donate to:
palestine children's relief fund
medical aid for palestinians
palestine red crescent society
mutual aid diabetes- help diabetics in gaza (any of the gofundmes listed on their page)
esims for gaza (this post has some helpful info about donating an esim!)
feminine hygiene kits for gaza
and here are a few more basic details:
the crabs can have no color, or the color can be your choice between pen and colored pencil. you can pick any color, i just used red and blue for these ones because that's what i felt like doing.
please give me at least a day to get you your crab drawing! i am in school and pretty busy, so there might be things that get in the way, but i will get them done as fast as i can :]
i did not post an example of a painting i have done because the ones i have are also on my main account and i'd like to try to keep them separate, but if you want an example just message me and i can show you! and if you do figure out who i am just don't go shouting it from the rooftops, okay?
if you prefer i don't post your crab and/or tag you, just let me know and i won't :]
i've never sold any kind of art before so please be patient, i'm sure there will be some things i have to sort out.
i will update this post if/as necessary :]

Richkid!Ateez
a/n: no jongho in this because it was a request inspired by my original richkid jongho post as well as part 2.
hongjoong
you first met hongjoong when you stumbled upon him in an empty classroom long after school had ended
as the vice president for the arts club, you, along with the president of the club, were tasked with gathering some extra supplies
the two of you had gone to the administration to ask for more funding to buy some new supplies, ones that didn't look like they had been run through by a pack of first graders
but admin didn't seem to particularly care for such trivial things like the arts
dismissing you quite quickly and telling you to look for extra supplies around the school
and so, you and the president were tasked with going through every singly empty classroom in hopes of scrounging together some decent supplies
the president had taken the east side of the school, while you looked on the west side in hopes of covering more ground
dragging your feet, you walked towards the last classroom of your side of the school
so far, you had only managed to find a few more packs of colored pencils and markers
and although it wasn't anything remarkable, you were grateful to have found anything in the first place
so with low hopes, you prayed that you would be able to find something else in the last room
slamming the door open, you jump when you make eye contact with someone sitting in the middle of the room
all the desks are pushed to the sides of the room quite messily
some of the chairs are knocked over, like someone pushed them away in a rush and never bothered to pick it up
and in the middle of the mess sits Kim Honjoong
in front of him on the ground is a large black jacket that's spread out, different colored paints and markers surrounding him
of course, you know who he is
it's kind of hard not to
his family runs one of the biggest banks in the country, and they sent him to this school in hopes of properly preparing him to take over the family business
but (according to the rumors) Hongjoong had all but stuck his middle finger in his family's faces, slacking off and doing everything in his power to avoid learning anything about business and money
you had heard rumors that he was quite artistic, and looking at the beautifully painted jacket that lays on the ground in front of him, you believe the rumors are true
"Oh," you say awkwardly when Hongjoong looks up from his project to stare at you
"uh, sorry, I didn't think anyone else would still be here," you explain
Hongjoong tilts his head to side
"I like working here because no one ever uses this classroom so I can keep all my supplies safe," he gestures to the loads of paints that surround him
you nod, still feeling a little bit bad about walking in on him
"okay, well, I'm gonna go now," you point behind you and begin to close the door
"wait!"
you pause, peering into the classroom once again
"what are you doing here so late?" Hongjoong raises his eyebrow
"I'm part of the art club and we need more supplies, but this stupid school doesn't think the arts are worth their money," you roll your eyes, "so, we're stuck looking for extra ones in the empty classrooms."
"no offense," you add, realizing you just called this very prestigious school stupid in front of a kid who comes from a very prestigious family
Hongjoong cracks a small smile
"no offense taken"
it's quiet for another moment
"I didn't realize we had an art club," Hongjoong comments
you nod
"yeah, the school doesn't really like us promoting it. I'm pretty sure it's because they want everyone to join the fencing club or whatever rich people do on their free time," you joke
you can't help but feel a little bit proud at the way Hongjoong throws his head back in laughter
"maybe I'll join," he says once his laughter has died down
you're a little shocked, but do your best not to let it show on your face
"well, we meet every Thursday after school," you tell him
"just don't expect us to have all your fancy paints and stuff, we're on a budget"
Hongjoong giggles before sending you a cocky smile
"don't worry, I know some people who would love to make a very generous donation to the art club"
it's about a week later when you and your president get called into the office
the principal seems annoyed, tossing you guys a piece of paper that you soon realize is a check
grabbing it off the desk, you and the president can't help but stare with wide eyes and gaping mouths at the number of zeroes you see written
"wh-who donated this?" your president asks, completely floored
"The Kim family," replies your principal, muttering a "surprisingly" under their breath
later that day during lunch, you happen to pass by Hongjoong who's talking with his group of friends
the two of you make eye contact and he sends you a wink
looking away, you bite back the smile that threatens to appear on your face
seonghwa
"ohmygodimsofucked" you breathe out harshly, running through the doors of the building
you grip your bag tightly, praying that your stuff doesn't fall out of the small hole on the bottom
your cat had taken it upon herself to use it as a personal scratching post
although you're pretty sure she did it because she was mad that you started limiting her on how many treats she ate
you're not one for fat-shaming, but she was getting pretty chunky
your shoes squeak as you book it past different classrooms, ignoring the weird looks from the students inside of them
you were already late for your exam, and you had three minutes to make it to class before you exceeded the 10-minute grace period your teacher allowed on test days
you can already see the door at the very end of the hall and mentally cheer
almost there, almost there, almost the-
"what are you doing?"
you let out a scream as you feel the tip of your shoe scrape the ground, sending you hurdling forward
you shove your arms out in front of you and allow the palms of your hands to break the momentum of your fall
"ow" you wince, feeling the sharp sting from the tile flooring
"oh my goodness, are you okay?"
at the familiar voice, you look up, only to see none other than Park Seonghwa staring at you with concern
oh fuck
Park Seonghwa, top student in your grade and the entire school, teacher fan-favorite, and hall monitor
of course, not that Seonghwa was mean or anything
he has a reputation for being quite nice, causing all the students to love him
not to mention his other-worldly beauty
the amount of chocolate he gets on Valentine's Day could rival how much they sell at candy stores
but, he is also known for being quite serious when it comes to attendance and tardiness
whenever he catches students ditching class or being late, he has no problem lecturing them and giving them after school detention
which you absolutely cannot afford today because you have to go pick up your younger brother from his school across town
"excuse me?" his voice pulls you out of your worries
"huh?" you answer, staring at him wide-eyed
"are you okay?" Seonghwa stares at you concerned
"that was a pretty nasty fall," he comments, glancing down at the way you clench your hands to try and stop the stinging
reaching out, Seonghwa gently touches your hand
"May I?," he asks, looking up at you through his eyelashes
you can't reply, absolutely shocked at what's happening, only managing to give him a small nod
he ever so gently opens your hands and winces at the sight of your bright red and scratched up palms
without saying a word, Seonghwa brings his backpack to his front and opens the smallest pocket, rummaging around inside of it before letting out a satisfied hum and pulling something out
it's a cat band-aid
you can't stop the small "cute" that escapes your mouth at the sight of it
Seonghwa's face turns red
"they were the only ones left at the store," he mutters as he begins to carefully place the bandages on your hands
he says sorry when you let out a hiss at the sting
once he's done, Seonghwa helps you stand up and holds your bag out to you
"how come you're in such a rush?" he questions
you glance down at your phone, sighing when you realize that you've missed the 10 minute mark
"I had an exam today and my teacher allows us a ten minute grace period, so I was hoping I would make it," you explain, "but I already missed it."
Seonghwa frowns at the way you look so disappointed
"what class is it for?"
"statistics with Snow"
Seonghwa perks up at the mention of your teacher's name
"Snow? I had him last year, he loves me. If you want, I can tell him I needed your help with something and ask him to let you re-take the test, I'm pretty sure he'll say yes."
you stare at him, absolutely floored
"you would do that?"
what happened to the scary hall monitor everyone spreads rumors about?
Seonghwa hesitates, but nods
"I feel bad about scaring you and causing you to fall, which ultimately led to you missing class," he frowns
"I-Thank you, Seonghwa, I do't even know what to say," you tell him honestly
once again, a light pink flush makes its way onto Seonghwa's face
"y-yeah, of course"
taking a look at his watch, Seonghwa says something that shocks you even more
"well, since you aren't going to class, do you want to go with me to the convenience store down the block?"
did you hear that correctly?
not only is the Park Seonghwa letting you off the hook, he also bandaged your hands, offered to lie to your teacher to let you retake your exam, and now he's asking if you want to ditch for part of the day to go to the convenience store
what the fuck is going on today?
"I'm sorry, is the school's top student asking me if I want to ditch?" you can't help but tease
Seonghwa pouts slightly, crossing his arms
"I mean, I can just give you detention instead, if you want"
shaking your head no, you tell him that you'd be more than happy to go with him
"well then, let's go," he smiles, offering his arm to you, and the two of you begin making your way out of the building
yunho
you’re in your first period of the day, a chill class where your teacher allows everyone to do whatever they need/want
you sit quietly at your desk, working on some homework
some students around you do the same, while others chat quietly with their friends and some even use the time to sneak in a few more minutes of sleep
you’re so focused on completing this assignment that you don’t notice the student aid that walks into the classroom and hands your teacher a note
you only look up when the teacher calls your name
he motions you to come up to his desk
nervously, you place your pencil down and make your way to the front
“Looks like we have a new student and the office wants you to show him around,” your teacher explains, handing you the office note
you wordlessly take it from him, looking down at the paper
“Go ahead and grab your things, I’ll let your other teachers know that you might be late for your next class.”
nodding, you walk back to your desk to quickly pack up your things before heading out
once you reach the office, you walk in, sending a kind smile to the ladies who work in the front
one of them nods her head towards the principal’s room and you thank her before making your way over
knocking on the door, you wait until you hear the principal’s “come in” before opening the door and stepping inside
“Ah, (Y/n), thank you for coming in,” your principal smiles
“This is Jeong Yunho, he’s our newest student who just transferred from a different school district.”
the boy stands up from the chair and reaches out his hand
you shake it, slightly taken aback at his height
he’s incredibly tall, with black dyed hair, and yet, despite his intimidating stature, his face is kind
“Nice to me you Yunho,” you greet politely
he smiles a bit shyly, giving you a quiet hello and looking away
“As one of our top and most involved students, I knew you would be the best choice to guide Yunho around the school and help him get adjusted,” your principal smiles.
she claps her hands together
“So go ahead you two. Yunho, don’t worry, you’re in great hands with our (Y/n) here and I hope you have an excellent first day,” she smiles before ushering the two of you out
you and Yunho stand outside in the hallway, an awkward silence overcoming the both of you
“Can I see your schedule?” You ask politely
he nods, reaching into his pocket and digging out the paper
you scan your eyes over it, humming when you notice that you share most of your classes with him
“Well you’re in luck,” you send him a smile. “Looks like we share most of our classes so you can just follow me around for today.”
“Great,” Yunho replies, the tips of his ears turning slightly red
and so throughout the day, you guide Yunho to your shared classes, telling him what buildings are for which classes and some of the best spots for some quiet time
his last two classes of the day are different from yours, so you take it upon yourself to get a campus map and label where his classes are going to be
as the bell rings for lunch, you take your time packing up your things
most of the students have already filed out of the classroom by the time you’re done
and you can’t help but jump when you look up and notice Yunho standing in front of your desk
“Oh, Yunho, is everything okay?” you ask
he nods
“Yeah everything’s great, but I, uh-” his eyes flicker around nervously
“I was wondering if we could have lunch together? I don’t really know anyone else,” he admits, a shy smile taking over his face
you think about it for a second before nodding
“Yeah of course we can. But I’m sure by the end of the week you’ll have your own little group to hang out with, so don’t worry,” you reassure him
Yunho doesn’t admit that he quite enjoys spending his day with you
and so you two eat lunch together, sitting side by side in the courtyard and chatting, getting to know each other
by the time the lunch period ends, Yunho can’t help but pout
“We don’t have anymore classes together right?”
you shake your head
“No but I’m sure you’ll do great,” you send him a reassuring smile
he frowns for a split second and seems to curl into himself slightly before an idea pops into his head
“Let’s go eat after school!” he suggests cheerfully
You pause
“What?”
“After school, my family’s driver is picking me up, so if you don’t have anything to do, let’s go eat together!”
“I don’t know about that,” you trail off
you figured he would be tired of you by now, but offering to go eat together after school?
“C’mon, I’ll even pay,” Yunho attempts to bribe you
he can see the hesitance on your face and gently touches your arm
“I really enjoy hanging out with you (Y/n),” he stares into your eyes
“And I’d love it if we can become friends rather than going our separate ways.”
you feel your chest warm at his words
and the way Yunho stares at you with wide, starry eyes makes you falter
you sigh
“Alright, let’s hang out after school,” you relent
“Meet me here after your last class and we can leave together.”
Yunho’s smile is breathtaking and you have to force yourself to look away
maybe this won’t be too bad you think
yeosang
out of all your classes, you think this one has to be your favorite
orchestra
you’ve been playing cello for as long as you could remember, and to be able to take a class solely dedicated to the instrument is perfect
you sit in the corner of the room where you and few other cello players have set up, watching as your instructor claps her hands
“Okay students, as you know, our spring recital is coming up.”
a few of the students cheer and a smile takes over the instructor’s face
“This year, we've decided to do things a little differently. Rather than having student solos, I thought it would be a great idea to have you guys do duets with your classmates.”
there’s mixed reactions, some students groaning while others look excitedly at their friends
“But, before you all get excited, I already went ahead and paired each of you up with a player of a different instrument.”
this time, more groans ring out throughout the room
you fidget in your seat slightly
while you don’t particularly love this idea, it’s also not necessarily the worst thing that could happen
meanwhile, the instructor has already begun to read off pairs of names
“Yeosang and (Y/n)”
you blink
Yeosang?
as in, the best violinist in your school?
oh fuck
you look around the room before finding the back of his head
his long blonde hair is styled nicely, and you watch as he reaches a hand up to gently push some of his hair behind his ear
if you weren’t nervous before, you’re definitely nervous now
once your instructor has finished reading off the pairs, she allows you all to break and get together with your partner
you sit and fidget with your bag, unsure if you should make your way over to Yeosang, or if he’s coming to you
the sound of someone clearing their throat causes you to look up
Yeosang stands in front of you, hand gripping the case for his violin
“(Y/n), right?”
you nod
“Looks like we’re partners,” he says slightly awkwardly
you nod once again, unable to look him directly in the eyes
“Okay, well, I think it would be best if we meet up after school to practice together. Meet me in the main parking lot and we can go over to my house.”
his house??
you clear your throat before replying, “okay that sounds good."
Yeosang gives you a curt nod before the bell rings and he makes his way out of the classroom
after school, you stand alone in the almost empty parking lot
next to you is your cello case and in your hands is a box of chocolate croissants one of your friends had given you
where is he? you think, beginning to get a little nervous at the thought that Yeosang might've forgotten about you
you're about to begin walking away when you spot him running out of the doors
by the time he gets to you, his normally pristine hair is slightly messy and out of place, and he pants hard
you resist the urge to fix his hair for him
"Sorry about that," Yeosang apologizes once he's regained his breath
"One of my teachers asked me to stay back to help him with something and I hadn't realized how late it had gotten," he admits sheepishly
you wave him off, letting him know it's not a big deal
"I thought you might've forgotten about me," you joke
Yeosang shakes his head
"never."
before you even have a chance to comprehend his answer, he's reaching out to pick up your cello case
you frantically try to stop him from picking it up, but he gently shoos away your hands
"I'm stronger than I look, lovely"
he guides you to his car where he carefully puts away your instruments, opening the passenger door for you and getting settled himself
once the two of you reach his house, you watch in slight awe as the large gates to the property open up
pulling up to the very front door, Yeosang begins to get out of the car and you follow, clutching the box of sweets
you watch as he hands a man in a suit the car keys before guiding you inside the house
"If you don't mind me asking," he starts. "What are those?" he gestures to the pink box in your hand
"Oh!" you look down
"A friend of mine gave me some chocolate croissants during our last period."
you push the box towards him
"Feel free to have some, as a thank you for letting me practice here and for the ride"
with a small smile, Yeosang thanks you and reaches into the box, grabbing one and pulling it out
you grab one for yourself as well before the two of you get started on learning the music sheets
it's a few minutes later when you look up at Yeosang and let out a small laugh
he has chocolate smeared on the side of his mouth and he even managed to get some on the tip of his nose
"I'm guessing the croissant was good?" you gesture to the small mess on his face
pulling his phone out, he looks in his camera and begins to turn red
you laugh even louder, reaching into your backpack to pull out a tissue
you lean across the table, getting close to Yeosang's face and ever so gently wiping off the chocolate
when you finally move away, Yeosang doesn't know if his face is red from the embarrassment or from having you so close to him
san
"c'monnnn, you have to go to at least one of their games before we graduate!" your friend pesters you about attending the school's baseball game this upcoming Friday
sure, a lot of the boys on the team are nice to look at
but between academics, extra curricular's, and family obligations, you don't really have time to be going to watch boys in tight pants run around a field
you roll your eyes, shoving her off from where she's draped herself on your shoulder
"I really don't" you reply dryly, taking a bite of your sandwich
your friend rolls her eyes
"whatever, if you think I'm gonna give up on trying to convince you then you're sorely mistaken"
she grins, and you wince
you know better than anybody that when she puts her mind to something, she always gets what she wants
the bell signaling the end of the lunch period rings and you begin to pack up your lunch
"I'll meet you after school for our volunteer hours!" your friend waves goodbye as she begins heading towards her class
you wave back and continue packing up
you sling your backpack over your shoulder, beginning the walk to the science building
just as you turn the corner, you crash into something hard
you let out a small "oof" and stumble back
before you're able to fall on your ass, a hand reaches out and grabs you by the arm, helping to stabilize you
you look up to see who you crashed into
Choi San
star player of the baseball team and the it boy of the school
"I'm so sorry!" he apologizes, eyes wide
you wave him off
"it's okay, I wasn't looking where I was going either."
he bites the inside of his cheek and tilts his head
"I don't think I've seen you around before, what's your name?"
you hesitate a little
you're a scholarship student, and while you're very proud of how your work ethic that has gotten you this scholarship to such a fancy school
you can't help but be a little nervous telling one of the most popular and wealthy students in the school who you are
"(Y/n)" you eventually reply when San's eyes won't leave yours
his eyes light up
"I thought you looked familiar! You're one of the top students in our entire grade"
you feel your face get warm and look down at your shoes
"uh, yeah, that's me"
"do you think you could help me in my language class?" San questions
you blink, not expecting those words to come out of his mouth
"uhhhh"
quite frankly, you have a lot on your plate
and you're not sure you can handle taking on another student to tutor
"I promise I'm not a lost cause!" San all but begs
"I'm just a few points away from being suspended from playing on the team and I really can't stand the idea of not playing," he rubs the back of his neck nervously
San stares at you with such hope in his eyes that you can't find it in yourself to say no
so you sigh and relent, nodding your head as San breaks into a wide smile
you notice the dimples that pop up on his cheeks when he grins
cute
"thank you thank you thank you!"
he glances down at his phone before letting out a small "oh shit"
"class is about to start, I should get going,"
"Thank you again (Y/n), for agreeing to tutor me, I really do appreciate it"
just as he begins walking away, he pauses and turns back around
"Are you coming to our game this Friday?"
"I'm not really a huge sports person," you admit. "So, probably not."
San pouts and you immediately feel the need to take back your response
"But I guess I can try making it to one."
oh your friend is never going to let you live this down
another blinding smile makes its way onto his face
"I promise to play my best to make it worth your time."
San sends you a wink
"I gotta impress my pretty tutor"
mingi
you stand awkwardly next to your dad, staring at Mingi
when your dad had mentioned that one of his friends suggested this "really great mechanic" in the neighborhood who was also "kinda young", the thought that it might be someone in your grade had never even crossed your mind
you honestly didn't even think it would be a possibility
"oh, do you two know each other?" your dad asks, looking back and forth between you and Mingi
"sort of?" you reply hesitantly
sure, you knew who he s
one of the wealthiest, smartest, hottest kids in your grade
but the two of you weren't friends by any means
the most interacting you had done was a brief "sorry" when you guys had bumped into each other in the hallway that one time
you were brought out of your thoughts when Mingi sent your dad a bright smile, reaching forward to shake his hand
"Hi sir, I'm Mingi, I share a couple of classes with (Y/n)."
he knows my name?
your dad nods, seeming impressed by the boy's manners
"well, I'm here because I've been having some car trouble and a friend of mine recommended you. I was hoping you could spare some time to take a look at it," he pats the hood of the car
Mingi nods
"Of course sir. As long as nothing's causing major issues, I should be able to get it back to you in two days," Mingi says, taking a glance at the vehicle. "I'm a little backed up with appointments right now, but I promise to try my best to get it done as fast as possible"
your dad nods
"Thanks, son."
a grin makes its way onto your dad's face
"And just remember, I know what school you go to if you do anything to hurt my baby."
you groan, missing the way Mingi's eyes dart to you rather than the car
"I would never," Mingi replies seriously
"daaaaaad" you shove his shoulder slightly, feeling your face heat up
facing Mingi, you apologize for you dad's comments
the last thing you need is for his parents to show up at your house questioning you as to why your father decided to threaten their son
just then, the sound of a phone ringing begins to echo through the small garage
pulling his phone out of his pocket, you watch your dad's eyebrows furrow as he reads the name of the caller
"give me a second kids," he says, bringing the phone up to his ear and stepping out of the garage to answer the call
once the door is shut, you look back at Mingi, who, to your surprise, is already staring at you
"I'm sorry about that," you apologize once again. "He's pretty serious about his car, doesn't like to let a lot of people touch it."
Mingi nods understandingly
"No worries, I get it. I guess I should be honored he trusted me enough to bring it here," he grins
taking a look around, you can't help but be a little impressed by how legit everything looks
not that you know much about mechanic shops
"So, I didn't know you were also a mechanic outside of school," you mention. "I thought your parents would want you to focus on business and stuff like that."
Mingi's ears turn warm and he brings an arm up to rub the side of his neck
"That's because they don't really know I do this," he admits
your mouth drops open
"How do you manage to run all of this on your own without them finding out?"
he shrugs
"'s not hard when they're never home in the first place."
you frown
"but don't feel bad," Mingi continues, noticing the look on your face. "This is something I really enjoy doing and I'm glad I can do this all on my own."
the way Mingi's face brightens up when talking about something he's so obviously passionate about makes your heart feel fuzzy
before you can say anything else, the door to the garage opens and your dad walks back in
"Sorry sweetheart, but we're gonna have to get going. The guys back at the office are having trouble sorting this deal out and they need my help," your dad rolls his eyes
"Thanks again, son, for helping me out. Whenever my car's ready just go ahead and let my daughter know since you guys see each other at school anyways," your dad places a hand on your shoulder
"I didn't sign up to be your messenger," you mutter, crossing your arms over your chest
Mingi lets out a deep laugh
"Of course, sir"
your dad begins walking out after saying goodbye to Mingi, and you follow, pausing at the door to look back at him
"Bye Mingi," you smile, sending him a small wave
"Bye (Y/N), I'll see you in class," he calls out
once the two of you leave, Mingi gets to work taking a look at your dad's car
maybe, just maybe, this car will finally give him the chance to talk to you more
wooyoung
you and Wooyoung had actually been best friends for as long as you could remember
when you were younger, your mom had been hired by Wooyoung’s family to tutor him in any and all subjects
as she was a single mom and couldn’t always afford babysitting, she would often times bring you along with her when she went to Wooyoung’s family’s house
most of the time you would sit quietly on one of the large couches and work on homework or color
but one day, a small Wooyoung had managed to sneak away from your mom and come see you
he’d always see his tutor coming in and out of the house alongside a young girl around his age, but he never actually saw you up close or talked to you
and so, as any child would do, his curiosity got the better of him and he went out in search of answers
despite the initial scare he gave you when he screamed “BOO” in your ear, the two of you had gotten along quite nicely
after his tutoring sessions and when you were done with homework, your mom and Wooyoung’s parents would watch with fond eyes as you two chased each other around the large backyard
as you both grew up, and even when your mom stopped needing to tutor him, the two of you remained incredibly close
it’s how you were even able to attend this fancy school in the first place
the tuition certainly cost an arm and a leg, something your mom would never be able to afford on her own
but Wooyoung’s parents insisted that you attend as well, saying it was one of the best schools in the country and they would put in a good word for you
they also took it upon themselves to cover the cost of your tuition, saying that at least this way, they knew you would keep an eye on their son
and so you and Wooyoung had fallen into a comfortable routine with each other, knowing the other person inside and out
so when one day you were late leaving your last class, Wooyoung couldn’t help but grow slightly concerned
you’re an incredibly punctual person, and even on the rare occasion that you would be late, you always made sure to let him know ahead of time
tapping his foot on the pavement anxiously, Wooyoung leaned against his sleek back car and glanced at his watch
“Where is she?” he muttered to himself
only the sound of your laughter caused him to look up
you were finally walking towards him, but next to you was a boy
Wooyoung stared hard at the guy next to you, watching with distaste as you waved bye a little too enthusiastically to him before skipping over to the car
“Who was that?” he asks, intrigued and annoyed at the same time
“Oh, he’s in my statistics class,” you reply vaguely
Wooyoung stares at you, noticing the way you seemed to fidget nervously and the way you kept rocking back and forth on the balls of your feet
he knows you like the back of his hand, and he knew that you weren’t telling him something
quirking a brow, Wooyoung says nothing, only continuing to stare
you sigh, reaching into your pocket to pull out a piece of paper
“He asked me out,” you finally admit, handing him the number
Yanking it out of your hand, Wooyoung looks at the phone number and address the boy had written down
“He didn’t even offer to pick you up?” your best friend scoffs
you roll your eyes
“It’s not that big of a deal Woo” you argue
he fixes you with a stern look
“I thought I raised you better than to have such low standards,” he shakes his head
“I’m literally a few months older than you!” You cry out
Clicking his tongue, Wooyoung crumples up the piece of paper and tosses it carelessly to the side, ignoring your protests
“I’m not letting you go out with some mediocre boy,” he says, opening the car door and gesturing for you to get inside
He closes the door as you try and argue with him, beginning to walk over to the driver’s side
Wooyoung elects to ignore the jealous monster that has made itself known in his heart over the idea of you going out with someone else
someone other than him
getting settled in the drivers seat, Wooyoung starts the car before turning to face you with a cheeky grin
“Dinner?”
˚ʚ♡ɞ˚

-> The Paper Art Post <-
Let's make some Wild Life ep.3 snails together!
First of all, I make a sketch (usually it's already the size I want the final thing to be, because I'm a very lazy person).
At the point where everything is apparent enough to have a clear vision in mind, I go to my paper scrap drawer and think of what colors and textures I want to use (although sometimes I initially start from the color palette).
Here they are! But don't get too attached, we're gonna destroy them later >:)
And while we're on it, let's talk a bit about textures!
Textures are like candy for our eyes. They are an easy way to trick your brain into thinking that something is more detailed than it actually is, hence it adds interest and makes the whole piece fun to look at.
However, this is also why it's important not to overuse them — it's easy to get lost in the details and accidentally make your piece difficult to perceive as a whole.
You can make textured paper yourself using literally anything you can come up with: paint a sheet of paper with gouache or tempera, make swirls and gradients with watercolor or inc, scribble with colored pencils, make prints with various objects (I enjoy making prints of crumpled paper tissues soaked in ink), etc etc. Packaging film or candy wrapping also can be cool.
My only advice is be careful if you use gouache: some colors can make your fingers messy even after completely drying, so that has to be kept in mind to avoid accidentally leaving a dirty fingerprint somewhere you didn't plan for it to be.
For the tools I recommend using not only scissors, but a modeling knife/scalpel and an awl as well. Modeling knife makes cutting small things much easier, and awl comes in handy when you want to transfer a detail on paper but don't want to use pencil.
For gluing stuff I use gluestick, rubber glue and double-sided tape.
Now the fun part!
You can add details with colored pencils and markers ↑
As you can see, the process is pretty simple: I cut the piece I need from the sketch and transfer it to colored paper.
When it comes to assembling pieces, you can carefully cut them so that everything fits together like a puzzle, or simply glue them on top of eachother.
Keep the scraps (unless they're objectively tiny, of course)! You never know when you'll want just that amount of just that color or texture. It's also much more practical to cut new details from the side of the sheet from which you have already cut, rather than start from different edge every time you need a piece of that color.
Don't rush to glue things down! Along the way you might want to move something a bit or put one piece under another, and with quickly gluing everything it won't be possible. I like to work in big parts, making every object or character in the picture first and then, after putting them on their places and fumbling around, gradually assemble everything like lego.
Here are two parts of the picture (Bdubs' snail + Tango&Etho's snails) and a piece of red film I want to put on the background in some places. All that's left is to assemble everything by carefully gluing it on to my sketchbook page :)
You also can elevate certain parts of your artwork to create depth and areas of interest, using puffy tape or п-shaped / [-shaped piece of paper and glue. It looks really cool, but I usually don't do that because it's inconvenient for me to store & I like to keep everything in the sketchbooks.
TA-DAAA, we're done! The best thing about this technique is that you don't have to be good at actually drawing to make something that looks interesting!
Hope this post was useful and you've got inspired to try paper art for yourself! (And if you did — send me your art in ask box or replies, I'll be very glad to see it :] )

Welcome to Fall fest!
↓Happy rambling about this art piece↓
Now first of all I don't think this is finished. Lots of lighting and making is an actual poster to happen. I just know it's going to take me some time to get the motivation again, So I'm sharing it now.
But other than the fact this isn't really finished. I'm starting to really love this watercolor brush. I don't think I've really dedicated myself to a close-up drawing like this in a long time. Although I will point out that it's hilarious that the only times I can think of that I have. Are all of Jack. Man do I love this guy. Anyways. Close-ups are usually reverted to sketches. It's not exactly a normal thing that I color them. Takes too much time in my opinion.
But I was able to do this in one day. Sure there's a lot of extra pieces. Most importantly the lighting and a more proper background. But I was able to complete this sketch and color it in relatively easily. Sure I already had the sketch planned. But it's kind of interesting to see how far I've gotten with quickness.
But anyways. I am starting to get so engaged with this watercolor brush. I started using it in backgrounds. I enjoyed the texture and the way how stuff naturally blended without me having to go through a whole bunch of other loops. It was just a nice brush and it made for some nice out of focus backgrounds. But I hadn't used it as my main still because.. well. It blended too good. Colors are often lost. There's technically some colors lost here too. A lot of things got darker. But it's not as much as before.
I finally decided to mess with the brushes settings. I usually don't mess with them unless it's the scatter option. Which I use for easy stardust. But I finally decided to test some of the brushes. Most importantly the watercolor since I was enjoying it so much. I only really had one problem. I just had to figure out how to make it not blend as well. Turns out it was an easy solution. Just one little setting dragged to be a little lesser. And all my previous problems were practically fixed. Sure I still have to paint over a couple times and make sure the blend is seamless. But it is so much easier now.
I'm going to hopefully use this piece to test some lighting. Again with that watercolor brush. But I also have unique ways of doing my lightings. Mostly in the fact that I shade with pencil and light with color. So I guess we will see. But I really enjoy this piece. The pose is simple enough. Just Jack leaning slightly forward holding a pumpkin. Boy did I struggle with those hands. But it's technically built to be an animated poster at some point. His hands are supposed to float away from the pumpkin. Along with maybe a head tilt and ray retraction. But that's something definitely going to happen later. Otherwise it's a pretty great still poster. Even if I still got to put up the poster label.

It's doodling time fellas
I wanted to give myself a bit of a challenge so I decided to draw the ocs of a few people here on tumblr, with the added challenge of doing it fast-
Minimal erasing and redoing, basically whatever is slapped on the page first sticks whether I like it or not. And there is a little time limit on how much I can spent on each character so that I don't get distracted as easily.
Just a little exercise so that hopefully it'll get easier for me to throw down a sketch using few lines and not taking literal hours-w-" I know everyone has their own pace but I would like to be a faster artist.
Anyway my yapping aside and without further delay: The girlies💚💗💜❤
Now to who these lovely gals belong to:
Haiyang: @riptide-pools
Nawa: @auburnitzy
Suki: @peachy-puddin-cup
An he: @lumidotexe
For anyone interested I'll include some thoughts on each of these below the cut:>
Haiyang
The first one I did and I think it shows>~> I was basically more focused on just figuring out how I wanted to do this so I spent less time and energy on how I wanted the character to look in my style. In the end I settled on doing the basic shapes in pencil and then switching to colored fine liners for details.
With the colors also matches the way I draw digitally just a tiny bit more! Buuuut if I end up doing this again I definitely wanna redraw her, I wanna do this gorgeous character justice after all!/'w'/
Suki
Suuuuukiiii! I did draw her before so I decided to do this version, which I believe to be just her shadow form! While drawing I didn't actually give myself time to look it up cause ya know, no distractions which is why there is a question mark-
But my stupidity aside- here is where I started drawing a lot faster, I was in the zone if you will, so I spent what time I had left adding some variation to the line art. I do like this one and honestly she would probably be so much fun to render digitally so I'll see if I can if there is time:>
Nawa
NOW THIS IS WHERE THE FUN REALLY BEGAN-
Nawa just was such a blast honestly, probably because I was getting really comfortable at this point and let myself play around more with how I stylise the characters! I love me some funky eyes, its probably the most recognisable part of my style.
Also granted I don't know much on Nawa yet(fake fan I'm sorry-/j) I only recently followed the creator so I need to find time to just really browse through their blog and consume all the knowledge there is, but once I do I'll be unstoppable!>:D
An He
Last but certainly not least we finish with An He, who was a just a chill and nice lil drawing perfect to round out this doodle session-w- now I have actually read ERHS(shameless plug, read it it's so good- just need to find my attention span as I haven't caught up with it SOBS) so I have more knowledge on her.
For that reason I attempted to do a slimmer face shape, i wanted her built overall to read as visibly more thin and petite. Along side that I went for rings in her eyes as an allusion to sound waves as I didnt just wanna drop in a music note and call it a day.
however maybe I'll experiment more another time because I just dont think it reads that well:'<
That concludes my silly ramblings! Thanks for sticking around and if any of the creators of these lovely ladies see this- YOU HAVE AMAZING CHARACTERS AND I HOPE I DID THEM JUSTICE!- ahem.
If I do this again I'll definitely go for some male ocs as well for the sake of variety, it was a happy accident that I only drew girls here.

「 txt in kindergarten 」 。。。
𐙚 SOOBIN
• Passes by his friends’ houses to collect them, walking together to school • Pouts whenever someone else takes something he’s set his eyes on but doesn’t say anything about it. He tells himself it’s fine, as long as they're happy • Only brings essentials to school, but overpacks on situational things he might need like band-aids and bug lotion/patches — “What if I get bitten by a THOUSAND mosquitoes today?!” • Loves to play with house toys, such as kitchenware with fancy wooden stoves. A bit stressed when someone comes along and plays beside him. • At the playground he tries to conquer the seesaw. Unfortunately he is afraid the person on the other end might not let him down or catapult him into the air, so he just sits on it with nobody on the other side. • Lunchbox has every food group, sometimes even gets dessert when he’s behaved enough. Eats the longest because he may have to force himself to eat whatever he doesn’t like. • Favorite time of the day is nap time! Everyone is quiet and he gets to sleep, no complaints here
𐙚 YEONJUN
• In charge of looking both ways when crossing the road, grips hard when holding hands. • Overpacks toys and stationary, but still capable of forgetting something mildly important. • Loves to play with building blocks and matching games/puzzles. • At the playground he’s at the top of the slide, ruling over his minions and most likely hogging it. • Likes to trade lunches with other kids, particular about the quality to quantity ratio. Expert at haggling. — “I’m taking more from you because my dish is harder to prepare and has more ingredients! Maybe if you give me a piece of your sides, I’ll consider it.” • Favorite time of the day is recess! Likes mingling with other kids, there is no set agenda so he could talk about or do anything
𐙚 BEOMGYU
• Strays and wanders away from the walking group, sometimes gets lost. • Things are heavily personalized, same unsure handwriting that says "beomgyu" on every item he owns, and as much as possible they’re all the same color or have the same character. • Erasers are the gel fruit ones that get lost (or eaten) • Loves to play with very select plushies, may throw a tantrum if he doesn’t have it with him • At the playground he can be found in sandboxes, making castles and pretending to be a monster. • Steps on other kids’ work in the process. Sometimes it’s an accident, most times it's intentional — “I didn’t destroy your castle because it’s better than mine, which is a lie. I destroyed it because I’m godzilla.” • Brags about all of the snacks and candies his parents gave him (or what he takes from the cupboard) • Favorite time of the day is arts class! A subject where he can be as loud and messy as he wants for the sake of whatever project he’s making that day.
𐙚 TAEHYUN
• Has a map in his bag in case they forget the route • Loves to talk about his surroundings, eyes glistening when others ask follow up questions • Always asks questions in class, he’s so attentive !! • Complete stationery set, including a cool pencil case with a built in sharpener. Will let others borrow but will ask why they need it, asking every other second if he can have it back because he’s afraid they’ll lose it or keep it • Loves to play with interactive books, pop-ups and especially ones where you can feel the texture of things. • At the playground he loves being on the swing sets, telling other children to wait their turn or when 5 minutes have passed to let others have a chance on the swing. — “Your time was up two minutes ago! Why am I still here? I’m the reason you get turns in the first place!” • Always eats whatever his parents have prepared for him, boasts about being healthy and outliving everyone else. • Favorite time of the day is math class! Since math class is technically indirect and simple arithmetics, such as adding apples, sometimes it’s easy to cheat (count on his fingers)
𐙚 HUENINGKAI
• Stops to look at all the fauna and flora, squealing and telling those around him. My little arthropod lover! • Extensive art set that gets everyone's attention, other kids love to borrow from him and he can be kind of a pushover. Unfortunately, they end up losing them. • Loves to play with anything colorful that makes sound, such as a rainbow xylophone • At the playground he loves the roundabout, but he’s too shy to get on. He patiently waits for someone to invite him to ride, so instead he pushes the others around. • Tries to eat his lunch quickly in case someone might ask him to share. He will, but he will sulk a lot. It was prepared for him! • Favorite time of the day is music class! Generally this is a time where everyone just makes noise, but most eyes are on him when he learns a new toy instrument. He doesn’t like the attention, but it’s not so bad either. — “This? Oh, I guess it’s just easy for me. wait, sorry! I didn't mean to brag.... When I want to hear a sound, my hands move on my own to do it! Teach you? Um I’m not really good at that… But sure!”
i saw that pic of them in the unifs and imagined little tubatu crossing the street hand in hand :(

Watercolor painting of Nick Valentine
I originally started this back in January right around the start of the semester, and I just finished it Friday.
I forgot to take a picture of the sketch, but I found two work in progress drawings of the painting. Here's the line art and shading done
The next picture was after the color was done, before the line art touch ups, and I after deciding I want to do a background. This was taken in mid-February.
I'm not sure if it's the poor lighting or something but it does look like the paint faded a little between this point and when I finished it, which is strange because I've only had this problem with my watercolor pencils and usually that's after a year of sitting out. The final photo here is not as vibrant as it is in person (which is the case for a lot of my traditional art), but there is still a noticeable difference to me with the actual drawing. I used multiple different brands and palettes, so I'm not completely sure which one could have caused the fading (or if it was the paint at all. I'm guessing a major part of it also has to do with how long I had it taped to my desk waiting to be finished lol.)
Either way, I love how it turned out, especially since this is one of the first times I tried doing a background like this with watercolors.

Notes on Comic Art #2: To Hatch or Not to Hatch, also some coloring stuff
One of the most influential things I've ever read on the subject of comic art is a piece Jesse Hamm wrote on Alex Toth where he talks about flatpacking.
[I discovered while writing this that Jesse Hamm passed away in 2021. He was a brilliant educator, one of the best in the history of the comics medium, and will be sorely missed.]
In the piece Hamm basically discusses how over-rendering objects usually makes them function worse as comic art. Many other people have discussed how using thicker lines for objects closer to the "camera" is good practice, how colors can seperate shapes and create depth, etc.
The question is, where does cross hatching fit into all of this? Or rather, various methods of adding more detailed rendering to artwork? I'm trying to figure this stuff out as I'm doing layouts for my comic, because I want to know the answers before I start inking the final artwork.
I try/want to have an uncluttered, clean, easily readable art style. I occasionally add hatching to my drawings, because hatching is fun, but I often feel like I've slightly ruined my artwork when I'm finished.
I've decided to look at some of the art that I feel like my own work is trying the hardest to emulate, at least philosophically, to see how other artists "weigh in" on this debate. It's important to remember that inkers embellish artwork [hence the alternate title "embellisher"], and so I'm going to try and find inkers most representative of a given penciller's intentions when applicable.
As I was working on this piece, I read Hamm Tips vol 1.1, and I discovered this diagram, which seems to relate with what I'm going to discuss later:
I think it's accurate to say that my desired approach is Uninflected/Deliberate; I think most people going for a clean and cartoonish look fall into that quadrant. Some people might describe Toth's work as being "clean", and so I should clarify that I'm talking about clean in the spirit of "lines meet neatly".
Some of the artists I'll discuss have lines that fall somewhere between being Inflected and Uninflected, and I think a lot of this comes down to inker approach. I feel like, in spirit, all of these pencillers are Uninflected, but some of the inkers use brushes, which creates a sort of middle ground. Brushes add different weights to a line, whereas crow quill nibs and pens have a uniform width. [The technical term for unweighted inked lines is "dumb line"; I believe this was coined by David Mazzucchelli.]
Let's first look at Adam Warren's work in the Dirty Pair volume Fatal But Not Serious. I'm a huge fan of how this comic looks; the flat, cel animation-style colors are very clean and easy to read. It's a very pleasant look, and I'm surprised more comics don't do this.
There is some hatching here, but it's not "serious" hatching. Just a few lines on cheeks, hands, etc. 98% of the artwork is shapes delinated entirely by a clean line and color. The convention floor panel is able to have a ton of detail without really changing the visual "rules" of the comic. An artist who does things in a more highly rendered way may've, for instance, reduced the crowd to a series of heavily shadowed figures, or colored in a single expressionistic wash to paper over things, etc.
Warren's Magical Drama Queen Roxy used a very similar approach to Fatal But Not Serious:
Let's now look at Rick Mays. I'm not a huge fan of Rick Mays, I've only actual read a single issue of a comic by him, but as I was reading Gen 13 he immediately stood out as being the best artist on that series, aside from Adam Warren himself [speaking only about issues Warren wrote]. It feels very telling that Rick Mays later did the final art for a graphic novel Warren laid out called Livewires.
These are from Gen 13 vol 2 #70:
The biggest difference between this piece has nothing to do with Warren or Mays, and everything to do with the coloring approach. I don't think the coloring here is bad, but the gradient-y colors do create a vastly different visual effect than the cel look I highlighted earlier.
The inking approach feels quite similar between the two artists; while Mays's art takes one or two steps towards realism relative to the Fatal But Not Serious stuff, texture is largely used to the same degree [with the grass and tornado being understandable exceptions]. What's interesting is that this issue has three different credited inkers; Karl Story, Rick Mays, and Jason Martin. I'm assuming this happened for deadline reasons.
I feel like I'm maybe starting to sound a little repetitive, and so I feel like I should share an issue of Gen 13 that I disliked, and then we can move to things that aren't Adam Warren-adjacent. These are from #43 and #44, with pencils by Lee Bermejo and inks by John Nyberg:
I'm not a big fan of this. The borderline chiaroscuro inking makes everything look heavily referenced, labored, and weird, and the "acting" in the comic suffers because of the over-rendered faces. It's a real shame the artwork is like this, because this two-part story is actually quite solid and would be a minor classic with better artwork.
I notice that many newer comic artists [which is to say, people who began their careers during the 90s onwards] put a lot of heavy shadows on figures in a way that feels too slavishly devoted to a certain kind of realism. I say a "certain kind" because the high contrast look of black spots being put onto a figure make the shadows way darker than they'd actually look in real life, so it almost makes the figures look dirty.
Look at comic art from the olden days and figures are largely defined by outlines/color. If a figure in an old comic has a lot of shadow on them, it's for reasons that are obvious and motivated; noir-y venetian blinds stuff, a mysterious villain being obscured, someone being underlit, or having half their face obscured, etc. There's a clear reason shadows are being used in these cases, rather than it being done to add usually unnecessary detail.
Anyways, let's look at Amanda Conner's work. Image on the left is from a Vampirella story called Fantasy Feast, and the image on the right is from Power Girl #12. Texture is used, like on the walls of the bathroom, but sparingly.
Looking at Conner's work in this context makes me realize, I don't think I've ever seen Amanda Conner's stuff colored flat [at least after she fully matured as an artist]. I don't think the more three-dimensional rendering used in any of these panels is bad, but I'm not going to be doing that kind of coloring in my book, and so it's not quite as instructive to me.
That being said, I really love Conner's style. I've noticed that Marvel and DC are increasingly using artists with styles that are broadly similar to Conner's; I've included an example below. Maybe it's because the artist below is too lazy to draw a proper background, but their work feels so much more flavorless than Conner's in comparison. I think it's because the "acting" is not as impressive, and Conner brings a fun-factor that feels completely absent in the page below.
I realize "fun" isn't always the order of the day, but this page doesn't really reflect . . . anything. It's completely bland.
Here's Kirby, who couldn't be bland if he tried. The left image is from the Young Romance collection Fantagraphics put out, and the right is from OMAC. The former is from the 40s, latter is from the 70s. [By the way, the Young Romance image is photographed from my own collection; there's no warping visible because Fantagraphics knows how to design a book].
Looking at these pieces side-by-side really challenges a lot of my assumptions about Kirby's artwork, because in some ways his artwork changed less than I previously thought it did without direct comparisons. There are some things that are more abstract about the OMAC page, like the wiggly shadows. Someone unfamiliar with Kirby might assume these were drawn by two different people, but only because 30-odd years of growth seperate these two pages.
Kirby's style, in my mind, is highly geometric and defined more so by abstract shorthand squiggles than hatching or other forms of rendering, but there actually is a fair amount of hatching on the OMAC page.
However, that OMAC page I believe was inked by Mike Royer, or at least someone using a brush. I noticed that, by sheer coincidence, almost all of the Kirby art from my first post in this series was inked by D. Bruce Barry, who didn't use a brush and also followed Kirby's pencils perhaps more literally than any other inker he ever had. In those images, it's clear that most of the hatching in Kirby's work was added by his inkers.
When Kirby did ink himself [using a brush], his style was oddly clean. He did add in hatching, but it was never particularly dense.
Anyways, I want to close this by including some Jesse Hamm quotes from his instructional PDFs:
-Simplicity is great, but often you need extra texture to seel weirdness.
-Another sign of experience is texture. The pro-level artist has learned to give different textures to grass, hair, tree bark, bushes, etc. Meanwhile, the amateur uses the same one or two shading techniques on EVERYTHING, giving it all a samey feel.
-Open spaces of black or white may be "activated" with a bit of texture. A few pebbles/ripples/etc will spur the mind to fill what's missing.
-We talk often about spotting blacks, but spotting greys (i.e., details/texture) is also crucial to clear compositions.
The lesson in the bit of Hamm writing I most often revisited, the flatpacking post, was that too much texture and rendering can make a comic exhausting to read. But reading more of his work, it turns out he had a more nuanced, texture-inclusive view of things.
What's the lesson here? Discretion.
