One thing I absolutely adore about Dead Boy Detectives is the immaculate costume design. Specifically, how it perfectly encapsulates who the characters are, both as a whole and who they are in the moment.

From the very first scene of the show, we know immediately that Edwin is a bookish, somewhat stuffy guy from the Edwardian era who attended a boarding school, and Charles is a punk from the 1980's who's most likely the wildcard between the two of them, just going off of the way that they're dressed. Both of them have distinct color schemes and different styles, but the general shape of their outfits is actually relatively similar---both of them have collared shirts (Edwin's dress shirt, Charles's polo), something over those shirts (Edwin's vest, Charles's suspenders), a jacket of some kind (Edwin's suit jacket, Charles's flannel thing), a longer overcoat (Edwin's traveling coat, Charles's peacoat), something around the neck (Edwin's bowtie, Charles's necklace), slacks, and nice shoes. They're distinct, yet matching, two clearly defined separate characters yet part of a set.

Edwin's prim, proper, buttoned-up personality lends itself to the way he dresses throughout the season---in the first episode, he only dresses down when he's in the office with Charles, aka his safe place and his safe person, and he doesn't really dress down like that again for a good long while after getting stuck in Port Townsend (though, if my memory serves me correctly, he does take off the suit jacket while watching TV with Niko). But in episode six, he's changed up his usual look for a cozier, casual-looking sweater and a little bit of collarbone, and in episode seven... well, he's in his nightclothes, and he's about as open, raw, and vulnerable as you can get. Edwin's color scheme is also predominately blue, which lines up nicely with his logical and practical, yet deeply sad and closed off personality, and the only time he really wears anything other than his normal blue-and-brown outfit (willingly, that is) is when he's in that green sweater in episode six. And, uh... all I can say is that it's quite telling how blue and green---or, well, teal---are the main colors of the gay/mlm flag.

Charles, by contrast, dresses down a lot, and that makes a lot of sense when you consider the fact that unlike Edwin, he feels comfortable pretty much anywhere. On any given episode, he goes from wearing his peacoat to just wearing his flannel to ditching the flannel to not even wearing the freaking polo---though, again, the latter is something that only happens when he's in the office with Edwin. Safe space, safe person. And, well, plenty of people have analyzed Charles's polo shirt going from red to burgundy to black over the course of the series, and there being a little bit of red under the collar of his coat that's only visible when Edwin fixes it, and then it goes back to burgundy, and then it's red again when Edwin's out of Hell... for good reason! It's color symbolism at its finest! Not to mention, the red and black not only perfectly contrasts Edwin's color scheme, but it also lines up with Charles's personality---he's a rebel, he's hotheaded, he's bold and brash and loud... and yes, he's angry, but he's also so, so loving.

When we first meet Crystal after she loses her memories, her outfit choices feel very deliberate. They're stylish and vaguely trendy, they're arty and a little bit witchy---pretty fitting for a psychic who's also a showbiz kid, even if she doesn't know that last part. But all of her clothes appear thrifted, or at the very least vintage, and the patterns and the general vibe all feel natural and comforting. Her makeup's always fairly simple, her hair's either down or up in a couple of cute space buns... overall, this Crystal looks like the kind of person who'd make you tea when you're in a bad mood, who'll listen when you just need to vent, and who may not always know the right thing to say but will understand what you're going through. But when we see her in the flashbacks, her clothing's flashy and prioritizes high-end trends over comfort, she's either got her hair up or has it straightened, and she not only has dramatic makeup, but acrylics. This is a girl who talks shit about you behind your back, who's bitter and cynical and wants everyone to feel the same way, who makes up for the lack of love and stability in her life via material things. It's also worth noting that Crystal's color scheme has a lot of purple, which is a color that connects to wealth and luxury, but also creativity and magic---which, yeah, fits her two conflicting sides pretty damn well.

You cannot talk about Niko Sasaki without talking about her outfits, and the meaning behind each of them has already been talked about at length. However, one thing that really stands out to me is that the reason they're so iconic isn't just because of the monochrome color schemes, but because they're out there. They're weird, they're eclectic, they're a little mismatched in style sometimes, and they're so unapologetically her. Niko wears heart-shaped sunglasses, unironically. Everything about the way she dresses speaks to how, even though she's a recovering shut-in who initially doesn't want to be perceived, she's still very sure of who she is.

Jenny's design, like Charles and Edwin's, is a design that gives you the key information you need the minute she first appears onscreen. The dark makeup, the silver jewelry, the leather apron, and the hairstyle all point to a person who's tough, doesn't take anyone's shit, and has long since given up on caring what other people think---in other words, she's a badass. But the butterfly tattoo hints at a softer side, a side that we see time and time again throughout the series as she shows that she cares about Crystal and Niko, and even the boys... eventually. Also, Jenny's design is perhaps one of the most clearly queer-coded in the series, to the point where her being a confirmed lesbian is pretty much a no-brainer.

Esther's design oozes camp, from top to bottom. The fluffy coat, the bustier, the boots and the cane and the everything, speak to a woman who's kept with the times and yet has seen it all. There's really not a lot I can fully say about her design, other than what Charles has already said: "She looks like a witch... like, kind of a sexy witch, who smokes a lot." (Or maybe I'm just tired and running out of steam at this point, idk, I love Esther's design and I can't really put it into words.) It's also pretty fitting that her color scheme has a lot of yellow in it---after all, she's always striving for more, so what better color for her than the color of gold?

Everything about the Night Nurse's design speaks to a woman who follows rules and discipline above all else, from the pantsuit to the pinned-up hairstyles to the tie to the heels. She's also the most muted out of the main cast in terms of color, dressing mostly in browns, dull greens, and duller browns---and while I don't have a lot to go into detail about there, I feel like that's kind of a symbol of her narrow-minded and bureaucratic worldview.

And the animal characters... Jesus Christ, I fully forget that they're all being played by human actors. Tragic Mick dresses like a man who's always spent his life by the sea, layered denim and all, and it's never a stretch to see this sad, bushy-bearded, baggy-clothed fisherman and imagine him as a walrus lounging on a beach. Monty, at first glance, seems to only wear black, which would be perfectly fitting for a crow, but when he's in better lighting, you see that he dresses in layers of red and blue, calling to how he envies Charles and Edwin and clearly longs for something more---and this might just be me, but I think that even though his outfits seem fairly normal at first glance, they feel kind of like a costume for Monty more than anything else, like he's trying to emulate a teenager that he's seen on TV more than someone in real life.

The Cat King fits this just as well, with all of his outfits aligning perfectly with whatever his cat form is at the time---when he's a fluffy ginger, it's always sequins and fur coats and clothing pieces that are specifically designed to take up space and call attention, and when he's a black shorthair, it's sleek styles and shiny leather and pieces that are designed to cut an intimidating yet more subtle figure. And while I could go into detail about all of those, what really stands out to me is how clearly queer everything is---more than Jenny's alt lesbian attire, more than Esther's campy coat and corset. From the very first scene he's in, he's wearing a skirt, and it looks natural. Nothing about the way the Cat King presents himself is exaggerated, nothing about the way he dresses is played for laughs---he's flamboyant and feminine and flirty, and he looks so fucking hot while he does it. It's gorgeous.

So... yeah, uh, all the awards for the Dead Boy Detectives costume designers!

Carmy as Your Baby Daddy | Social Media AU & Headcanon Series | part three

part two | masterlist | part four me and @carmensberzattos are back again with more carmy as your baby daddy thots. no fr, this is pretty much just a leaked and edited version of our dms. telling people & your second trimester. #teambreaktheinternet

telling everyone at the bear is the most heartwarming and fluffy thing. tina absolutely knew the whole time. "i knew it!" she brags smugly. "what do you mean you knew?!" you exclaim while carmy looks perplexed. "just a feeling," she shrugs in her most 'i'm always right' tone of voice. "food poisoning, my ass."

richie's reaction is unexpected. while you think he'll say something snarky or crass, he has a much more emotional reaction. he gets quiet for a long time, and neither you nor carmy are going to say anything about the tears welling in his eyes. it's not till later, as you're getting ready to go, that he pulls you aside. "thank you for changing his life," he says, and you think it's the most genuine you've ever seen him.

the second restaurant, sydney's restaurant, is open and up-and-running, so you have to make your way there next. while carmy is working that night, you head over to the new restaurant with a cake you made that says 'best auntie ever.' it takes her a minute to realize that you're telling her that you're pregnant, and she practically stops any pre-shift duties as she tackles you in a hug while yelling: "we're having a baby!? we're having a baby!!!"

telling sugar and pete goes exactly as expected. sugar is so excited that their baby boy will have a cousin close in age to grow up with. "don't cry, pete," you all groan. (@carmensberzattos and I have a headcanon about this headcanon that sugar had a boy and named him michael 😭 and of course she asked carmy if it was ok before staking claim over the name).

while your first trimester is ROUGH, the fog begins to clear as you enter your second trimester. as your hormones change, the morning sickness is quickly replaced by a high sex drive and carmy can't get enough. it's everything: your hair is thicker, the pregnancy boobs are incredible, there's a glow about you and you just can't keep your hands off of him. the fact that he knows that you're carrying his child drives him absolutely wild. he is more than happy to help out when you're begging him to fuck you morning, noon, and night.

however, carmy gets all kinds of flustered when anyone else but you catches wind of how much sex you've been having. one day he shows up late to the restaurant and richie is laughing his ass of. "what's up?" "nothin'. just that you're late because you're gettin' some, cousin." and carmy is blushing beet red all the way down to his toes as richie shakes his head and says, "men can never resist a pregnant woman, cousin. tiff was the same way."

he comes home and grumbles about the long day he's had since richie's been so unprofessional all damn day. "so he knows you're gettin' some. what's the big deal, bear?" you ask him. "the big deal is... richie doesn't know when to shut the fuck up!" he huffs. "i hate to break it to you, baby, but i doubt anyone thinks you knocked me up by way of immaculate conception," you laugh, cheekily while running a hand over your belly, and he's blushing again.

ok but why is wearing overalls (in general, but also) while pregnant such a vibe?! you have a pair for your gardening and farm work, but your overall and dress collection expands dramatically when you start showing because all you want to do is be comfy.

you get an insatiable craving for trashy chicken nuggets. mcdonald's, sonic, dino nuggets made in the air fryer (or even just in the microwave), you name it! marcus makes fun of you considering you're married to a james beard award winning chef and yet all you want is fried chicken. carmy begins making you your own nugget sauces because, while he can't flip the bear into a drive-thru fast food chain, he CAN make a mean buffalo sauce, a homemade ranch, or a fancy beet ketchup.

you want to give the baby something gender neutral that you can refer to them as, still undecided about whether or not you want to find out. it slips out one day while carmy is talking to your belly before bed (because of course pete told him that was something he should do) and you're both a freaking mess when carmy calls them baby bear for the first time.

speaking of pete, he sees fatherhood as another way to connect with carmy. it's sweet, but in classic pete fashion, he's a tries a little too hard. he's in love with being a father and is more than happy to lend carmy books, recruit him for a daddy & me bootcamp, and asking the both of you if you want to hold his baby michael every chance he gets. while sugar pretends that she hates it (she loves it) you're more than happy to leave carmy with pete for the day. sure, it's annoying, and sure pete's A LOT, but it really IS sweet.

sugar insists on throwing you a baby shower and pete offers to help the two of you find a bigger apartment since you'll need more room. you decide to strike while the iron is hot (aka while you have the energy to) and the two of you move to a bigger unit in your building. you're most definitely wearing overalls and you're most definitely beginning to show. carmy doesn't want to let you lift anything where you have to remind him that you're pregnant, not breakable (which, still doesn't put his mind at ease). regardless, marcus, gary, sugar, and pete all come to help the two of you move on a saturday. (sydney is running a whole new damn restaurant so she's busy or she'd be there but she makes sure to send food over and stops by later to check in that night).

liz & maya send you the sweetest gift: a crocheted onesie with 'baby bear' embroidered on the front, while your parents have already purchased grandma and grandpa merch. they're on the first flight out as soon as soon as you and carmy facetime them and tell them the news.

carmy never misses a single doctor's appointment. it doesn't matter what shift he has to call out of or who he has to call in a favor with, he will be there. you have ultrasound photos everywhere: taped to the fridge, in your planner, in carmy's office at the restaurant, functioning as a bookmark in one of your books.

marcus runs a mean campaign to be godfather that would give any presidential candidate a run for their money. richie competes with him, partially just to stir the pot, and carmy has to talk him down, reminding him that he got to be the witness in your wedding. you make the argument that if anything ever happened to the two of you, you'd want your baby to grow up with a pastry chef for a parent-figure. "dark..." richie comments, shooting you a look, while you shrug it off with a laugh. "that was dark, babe," carmy says, nervously. "yeah the concept of godparents is dark, honey," you point out.

after going back and forth about it, you and carmy decide that you do want to know the gender of baby bear after all. when you finally share your decision with your OB, she's more than excited to share with you that you're having a girl. you and carmy, both teary-eyed, stare up at the ultrasound and declare that it's a new chapter for the berzatto family.

Amanda sounded so good while singing Faithfully. Her voice is absolutely gorgeous, I'm truly blown away by her talent.

They are all so freaking talented man. It's so wonderful to see them show off their vocal abilities and just have fun. It was beautiful and wonderful and I loved it so much.

Also, you've really got to appreciate his commitment to the bit. He did this almost the entire song lmao.

Favorite Album

So my current favorite album has got to be OUATIS because it has an overall great vibe with the music itself, it has Nastya present in the story, what more could you ask for? And also it has that SoundCloud live version with alternate roles and that absolutely fucks

But that’s my all time favorite, that’s always my favorite and probably (?) always will be, so I’m also going to give honorable mention to HNOC, its most certainly a love hate relationship depending on the day, but at the moment I’m loving it. It features some of my absolute favorite voices (Raph and Ashes), features a lot of Ivy on trumpet, has a fun little vibe, a solid story, and a tube sun! A lot of the songs from that album right now are favorites, so we take it

Favorite Mechanism

Okay so this one is always really hard, so I’m just going to do my top three in no particular order except that’s really hard as well but okay

So we have Ivy, she’s such an interesting character, her fiction makes me quite sad but also very intrigued you know? She also just has such style, in in love with the academic type style it’s lovely, and on the topic of academics she’s a bookworm and archivist!! (And Morgan himself I believe is a reader which is awesome). Her lines in the shows are always my favorite spoken bits too, especially Saturday DTTM “and now, unless you want us to sing…” *crowd screams yes* “see we like these ones”

Then Nastya, she’s definitely a character of all time. I agree with Kofi when they said that Nastya is probably the most developed character, I love it. Cyberian Demons is such an incredible song set on its own as well, and her backstory puts me in such pain. The “they were never meant to start a fight” goes so hard with the way she said it idk I mean this probably relates to her actor better but still. She’s like a tired older sister/carer role person in Lashings and it’s an absolute mood. She’s also very pretty

Ough who do I put here, do I put TS for its absolute wonderful madness, do I put Raphaella for her voice and her outfit and her WINGS, do I put Tim for his raw anger and energy (and goofy vibes), do I put Ashes for being both badass and terrifying, do I put Marius for his silly, larger than life personality and hidden sorrow, do I put Brian for his drum, banjo, everyotherinstrumentheplays skills and compelling backstory, do I put Jonny for… Jonny reasons, WHO DO I PUT?

At the moment I’d say it’s Gender Rebels for the pure chaos that comes with Tim being the narrator (nastya punching Tim away from the mic is dear in my heart as well)

I think I just like the shows where the crew has to make do without Jonny because a few days ago my favorite was certainly lashings, probably because of the absolutely wonderful song lineup (rocket girl <333), the presence of Carmilla, the fact that Jessica was making up most of TS on the spot or the night before (TS used to have a wind up key!), and Nastya and Ivy focus of course

But yeah all of them are peak I have watched and listened many times

OUAT(IS) - I absolutely love the whole album, I was going to say I love the second half but I think I just don’t like once/old king Cole as much as the others, but yeah the “second half” is peak, I think my favorite is either The Aurora Strikes (yes, the spoken track, it was the first one I memorized okay) Sleeping Beauty, or No Happy Ending, the vibes are immaculate and both of them just hit so hard, make me feel like fighting God

UDAD - This is a tie between Ties that Bind and Underworld Blues, because Ties is a Raph song and it’s just a lot of fun I really adore the rhythm of the chorus, and because Underworld Blues is such a SONG like HOLY SHIT they all get some singing time and it rocksssssss. Wait actually I forgot about Torn Suits them all singing over each other is absolutely fire never mind paragraph cancelled I love Torn Suits that’s it

HNOC - this may be the hardest one actually, picking my favorite out of Empty Trail, Hellfire, Blood and Whiskey, Skin and Bone, and Holder of the GRAIL feels impossible, I’m going to say Holder of the GRAIL is my favorite at the moment though because the captain is literally just a little guy it’s adorable and so sad :(((

TBI - fuuuuck uh okay we’re splitting this up into two, first half I gotta say Losing Track, hearing them all sing together and Odin go “mah train :3” as they’re all being so serious will never not slap, but also Loki and Sigyn and Red Signal and Expert Testimony exist but we’re saying Losing Track, and second half is definitely Ragnarok II The Calling because of “COSMIC MADNESS REIGNS” as well as the Tim/Raph overlapping singing it’s incredible

You know honestly the Cyberverse Quintessons were so good, probably my favorite versions of them (though I still haven’t seen g1, but I don’t think that’ll change things much)

I don’t entirely know how to describe why I like them, there’s just something about them. Them being a multiversal force that travels universes to judge them, making their targeting of Cybertron basically unrelated to any sort of beef with these Transformers, they’re just here because it’s their job. It’s entirely impersonal to them and it just adds to their atmosphere. And also them just having more knowledge and power that our bots just don’t understand; I think they reach a level of cosmic horror that actually makes them as such to the Transformers. If that makes sense. Like they’d probably need a level higher than us human considering their power and knowledge of space already for something to be cosmic horror for them

But also how they put everyone basically into the Matrix and how in reality, they’ve basically got face huggers on them as they’re being drained as living batteries to some creature we don’t see until the finale. How when a bot’s finally drained and dead, they just drop onto the floor unceremoniously like flies. Again it’s the impersonal and unceremonious nature of it all. Same with the way the bots are laid out, there’s no importance placed to anyone’s spot in the place they’re being kept, like Optimus and Megatron are just in random places amongst everyone else. The Quintessons just don’t care

And also their plot line itself was just peak; Season 3a of Cyberverse was just genuinely amazing, the finale maybe being the only eh, if only because of all the interjections from Kup or Starscream not being that threatening and some other things, but overall good. I do wonder how the Quintessons even took over Cybertron in the first place, because we never see how we got from the Season 3 premiere to this, but oh well, I suppose not that important. Cyberverse kind of likes to throw you in sometimes with little context

Or the Scientist and his episode. Don’t know how to describe what I mean, but his vibes were immaculate, truly terrifying and embodies a lot of what I like about the Quintessons in this show

While I may be a fan of how One has them all organic and weird looking, honestly I don’t think they can top the Cyberverse depiction, and it’ll take a lot to top it

- Defense got stops when it mattered

- Offense looked lost at first but started to look competent towards the end

- Establishing a solid run game is important to open up the field for Justin to air it out and make some big plays BUT they do not need him to take over to win games which is very important

- Vibes were IMMACULATE pregame, during the game and postgame I loved every second!!

Ana, what would you say your top 5 anime are?

The only secure place shall we say is #1 but the rest really are not set in any particular order. Regardless, I've already answered this question a while ago but my opinions changed a little bit and these ones are definitely my favorite of all time.

#1 Bungo Stray Dogs.

My all time favorite anime is this one - Bungo Stray Dogs. It really hits hard for me because it just sucked me in immediately upon first watching it. I also really enjoy reading so being introduced to Japanese literature was just such a lovely bonus to me, so much so that I actually own two books which were written by Osamu Dazai.

If you've been following me for a while, this anime needs no introduction and you probably already knew that it's my favorite.

#2 Moriarty the Patriot.

Such an underrated gem...

Moriarty the Patriot tells the story of a math professor, William James Moriarty and how he wreaks havoc amongst the upper crust of British society as the secret Lord of Crime. He's a very morally ambiguous character who yes, does want to ultimately do good but his methods can be considered very extreme at times.

The anime is set in 19th century London and just the overall vibe of the show is immaculate. Every episode starts by setting the atmosphere which really gets you going, wondering how William and his associates will handle the chaos. His natural foil is the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and watching the two interact is a blast.

If you're in for anime which is packed with mystery, crime and some cool 19th century vibes, this one is incredible.

#3 Code Geass.

This is also another really popular anime that I don't think needs much of an introduction.

I've rewatched this show I think close to 10 times and never ONCE did I get bored. Keep in mind, I do NOT like mecha anime and this is one of two I've seen in my lifetime, the other being Aldonoah Zero.

Even so, despite my bias, it's still one of my favorites.

Literally everything is perfect about it and Lelouch is just... I'm speechless. He has my heart, I love that man.

#4 Re:Zero.

This is another one that had me on the hook since episode one.

I've always liked isekai anime but this one is just built fucking different. The author of this series really knows his craft both inside and out and I don't see enough praise for his world building.

Re Zero tells the story of a loser 17 year old otaku, Subaru Natsuki and how he got isekaid to another world. Since he's a dumbass, he thinks that he can have any ability he wants and that things will instantly go his way but Subaru is in for quite the rude awakening once he realizes just how horrible his situation is.

At the time of writing this, season 3 literally just came out and I am eagerly waiting for each new episode to drop.

#5 Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Horror packaged in frills and ribbons is my whole aesthetic and this show feeds right into that.

It really does look like a simple little magical girl show upon first glance but by now, it has received the almost legendary status that it has for a damn good reason. The story manages to make the usually cheerful archetype of the magical girl into something much more sinister and tragic, exploring some interesting themes along the way.

I just finished watching Derry Girls and I can honestly say I think it's one of the greatest shows ever. No, fr. The jokes, the sad moments, the songs, the all the wonders of the teen show in the 90s and the overall vibe.. like it's just 20/10. I am literally so amazed. I cried my eyes out at the ending because it was so good and hopeful and happy and amazing and immaculate.

Jottings: Season 7, Episode 3. Bloody newspapers, never get anything right

You will not need any tissues for this sort of dependable wrap-up episode, that probably packs a punch with regard to the books' timeline and helps explain some obscure points to show-only people, like me. Ice-cream is still a welcome side addition (B&J's Cookie Vermont-ster, this week), though: it is, after all, a very hot, sleepless summer in Europe.

Timeline and our attention are split between 1776 at Fraser's (f)Ridge and somewhere around 1978 in Inverness. While there is drama at the Ridge (the fire at the Big House, the Bugs, the Jacobite gold), in Scotland all the emotions of homecoming are quickly turning into a muffled affair, thanks to SS's evergreen DGAF monotony.

Spoiler: Bree's line while seated with Roger on the front steps of a -now- derelict Lallybroch ("I'm really happy right here") sounds and translates exactly like the supremely anticlimactic "I'm your daughter" (The Birds and the Bees). I will never, ever, ever forgive SS for that and I can only be relieved this time it wasn't such a big deal, in the great scheme of things. Or was it?

Unpopular opinion: Claire's Ave Maria fell a bit flat in these Catholic ears. I was expecting more, given the uber-dramatic context, and found it wanting. But this fleeting disappointment was soon enough redeemed with the soulfully subtle wink to Robert Frost's Death of a Hired Man ("Yes, what else but home?/It all depends on what you mean by home. /(...) ‘Home is the place where, when you have to go there,/They have to take you in.’). Immaculately delivered by C. - the woman does understand and feel poetry, and that, my friends, is a rare gift.

John Bell will surprise you in a very, very good way. Puck grew up. I see great things.

The J&C/S&C bubble: unsinkable. Because 'a thing of beauty is a joy forever'. And, it is my absolute conviction (along with Keats', of course) "it will never pass into nothingness".

Overall, we get all the right vibes from fizzled out Season 4 and underrated Season 5 in this episode that brings the Frasers back to Bree & Roger's humble pioneer cabin, for lack of a better solution.

For obvious reasons, I cheered and booed at the 'blood of my blood` scene, featuring C's new sgian-dubh (FYI, the handle fits perfectly in her palm). I admit, I sometimes am a vainglorious cretin (wee joke, Antis), but hey: it's been a while since we haven't seen knives and blades so prominently featured in this gunpowder, treason and plot segment of the saga.

With Vandervaart still off my radar, this rushed transition left me a bit hungry for more. Ever the optimist, I can only hope next week will be bigger, brighter, better and more. And the kilt is back (what's not to like, I wonder), because tee-hee, J&C are on their way to Scotland, too.

Little do they know, however. Onwards!

overall thoughts:

it felt very gimmicky. the stage production felt gimmicky too but in a fun way, this was gimmicky in a way that kinda gave me a touch of the ick

it did not feel to me very much like a cohesive movie. it felt like browsing ig or tiktok and just seeing a hodgepodge of scenes stuck together. which is a cool idea but idk how well it worked in practice and i also don’t know if it was intentional.

this is not the word i’m looking for but in terms of personality they absolutely whitewashed all of the characters and i really don’t care for that. the visuals and the casting were so immaculate but in terms of personality they just made them all taste like unsweetened corn flakes.

i’m biased and didn’t care for most of the tweaks they made to the songs individually BUT i think they blended with each other more cohesively than they do in the stage production so that was cool. and i am able to understand why they made them more pop-esque than theatre-y it’s just not my personal vibe

it all felt very emma watson’s beauty and the beast. like. not deserving of much hate but also just not as good. it has its time and place but i still just. the changes they made were too much for me. that being said i am gonna be the #1 viewer whenever it’s released to streaming platforms was not kidding when i said this is a new favorite movie

the whole like. tiktok and iphone camera thing was an interesting??? idea. i really liked it for cautionary tale but the rest. i think it was a better idea than the way they executed it.

but again i feel like they took so much from her. in the show she’s this overexcited little bubbly (autistic again but still) thing and she’s naive and then it’s revealed she’s conniving and manipulative and has this serious dark streak in her. in the movie it felt like she was just. awkward and then straight to conniving and manipulative. it was interesting but i miss my little jumping bean i wish they had given her some more spice

this movie has turned me into a cadina shipper of THE HIGHEST ORDER i’m already writing a fic for them and i call diiiiibs nobody else do it i write slow /j

i honestly really liked what ifs. i didn’t enjoy it as much as it roars but i think for the screen and for angourie’s voice it was a better fit. and i think it blended better with the new versions of the songs than it roars would have. not mad at it and the staging of it was really cool

cady being the one with a single parent is so interesting to me!! idk why they did that but i think it’s interesting. makes me wonder what happened to her dad but also go mom!!! women in stem!!!

her relationship with the art freaks was so???? weird??? it seemed like damian was the only one who really wanted all of them to be friends. i love this version of janis and damian together but when they were with cady it was all just so BLAND. it didn’t really feel like she and janis were friends at all which is what’s supposed to make the betrayal sting so much

whatever they were aiming for with someone gets hurt they missed hard bc holy cadina batman that shits gay dude BUT THE STAGING WAS SO COOL with everyone like frozen and then they all kick back in all crazy with the music it was great

i can’t tell how i feel about the new middle school incident. i think it takes so much of the pain out of it for janis which is meant to be her main motivator. she was not supposed to be KICKED OUT she was PULLED OUT but i do kind of like that they clearly made it where regina kissed a girl and liked it and freaked out and that was the catalyst for everything

i do not ship this version of cadnis and that to me is unforgivable. they have sooo little chemistry as friends let alone lovers i just can’t stand it. janis doesn’t ever even seem like she wants cady around. it seems so much like they took away what makes janis janis just to turn her into another catalyst for regina and cady’s stories

apex predator was fun!! i honestly like it being janis and damian singing it better than janis and cady i think it works better as a warning and stuff! and also the band in the tree made me laugh so hard. i’m glad cady had them as her tour guides but again that’s all it felt like they were to each other and i miss them being a little posse

REVENGE PARTYYYYYYUH. i thought the staging was really fucking weird?? like all the pastels and shit didn’t really fit i would’ve much preferred it to start like that and then have blood dripping down the walls or something when they’re talking ABOUT PEOPLES HEADS ON SPIKES. but musically it was my favorite of everything!! i’m so happy they put the original verse back i almost screamed out loud in the theater when i heard it!!!!!

i never thought i would say this but i wish they had not canonically made her a lesbian. i will never forgive tina fey for having her end up with that random girl. no shade to the girl, she’s gorgeous and i’m glad we got some on screen, good, healthy queer rep. but in my eyes that is absolutely just a cop out because they know people wanted her to end up with cady or regina. they’re spitting on us and saying “here have your fucking lesbian and enjoy it this is what you get” and expect us to be happy with it. i get so angry every time i think about it and it honestly kind of ruined the whole thing for me. i would rather she have ended up with kevin g again. or like. honestly damian romantically would’ve made more sense in a twisted fucked up way. i just absolutely hate how they handled that.

Thinking about Cynthia’s visits to Caitlin’s summer home in Undella, specifically the guests she has randomly appear depending on the season. AUGH THIS IS JUST OVERALL MAKING ME LOVE THE IDEA OF PEOPLE LOOKING UP TO CYNTHIA. like I feel that she would take being a role model extremely seriously, and enjoys mentoring (when she has the time and energy to do so) but also doesn't have her head up her ass about it and like. Yeah she is definitely confident in herself but also I see her being very humble.

(also just as a side note. I am all over Roxie coming over bc there's no way she wouldn't treat it like some college kegger. I have so many Cinderella’s Castle thoughts but I don’t really know how to structure it. So I’m just gonna be all over the place

The costumes are so good!! Especially Ella’s dress for the ball. That costume is immaculate. Like seeing it glowing in the dark was so cool!!

The Narrator and Ragweed were great and I was wondering why their dynamic felt so familiar but I think I know what they were reminding me of. Gonzo and Rizzo in A Muppet’s Christmas Carol. No I won’t explain that’s just the vibes they gave.

Hearing the full versions of songs we just had demos for was an amazing thing to experience. Finally knowing the context for Trappings of Starlight was so cool. Which I may have been very wrong about when the song would happen, I was technically right about who sang it cause all my guesses sing the song. Glad I was wrong about it being a song sung while a character was sacrificing themself cause I didn’t want to see Crumb die.

KIM THE WOMAN YOU ARE! Her as the Fairy Queen of Sweet Dreams was incredible, Ash to Ash was definitely my favorite song in the show.

Overall this show just has such a unique feel to it compared to other Starkid shows, it honestly brings me back to when I first watched TGWDLM, cause I have the same exact feeling of this being a new step for Starkid in like the best way. I’m so excited to see what else is in store for the Lands That Are cause it’s really such a cool setting.

And last thing. THANK GOD I FINALLY HAVE A GOOD NEW ADAPTATION OF CINDERELLA. As someone who’s favorite fairytale was Cinderella as a kid, oh my god is it refreshing to see an actual attempt at an original take instead of corporate girlboss that so many companies have done. Looking at you 2015 live action remake. But like this show shows that you can make her a compelling and empowering character without taking away her struggles and the abuse she faces. And I love it for that.

he’s a taylor swift listener. you cannot change my mind. armin honestly is willing to listen to anything and give any kind of genre a try but his favourite is definitely taylor swift. he normally prefers softer, calmer music like TV girl or lana del rey. his playlists are kinda short but pretty. he will make a playlist for you because he loves you so much!!! please i beg you to make one for him. he will be so happy and that will remain his favourite playlist forever. my man’s levi listens to cigarettes after sex. it’s very calm and peaceful which is what i feel like he listens to. he’s not a big fan of loud kind of music cause it genuinely annoys the living fuck out of him. cigarettes after sex is his number one artist and there’s no doubt about that. but he also listens to other peaceful songs like je te laisserai des mots, show me how, cardigan and many kind of songs like that. he’s not one to make playlists but if he did it would be full of songs by CAS cause playing his recommended will be random and he doesn’t like that. this didn’t make sense but i hope y’all know what i mean💀

this is actually really difficult cause i’m not 100% sure what she would listen cause she has a calm kind of aura but also loves going wild. she’s the definition of ✨balance✨ which is why i feel like she would listen to a bit of everything. from the smiths to coldplay to even a completely different culture. but she definitely listens to sidewalks and skeletons cause she’s gothic like y’all come on. and if she’s going through those days, this girl is playing mitski. no questions asked. but honestly the others would as well. overall she’s kinda like armin as they both try to listen to everything but always has a favourite.

ok so she has a very chaotic energy kinda thing going on so she would listen to rap in my opinion. as long as she can dance to a song, she’ll listen to that. but life is a fucking stress and she has like a stress reliever playlist which contains calm music to take her mind off things. she’s not one to make playlists. she’ll just listen to her liked songs and move on
