Hey everyone!

For those that don't know me, my name's Lou (she/her) and I have recently gotten back into revamping the numerous fic projects I had in my vaults and trying to get back into my writing again.

I have put out this post to say that if anyone is also in a similar situation with their own fics, I am offering my fellow fic writers to beta & alpha read fics in exchange for coming on as an alpha or beta reader for my own projects.

As a beta & alpha reader, I am willing to not only check for grammar, punctuation, spelling and formatting but also:

identify weaknesses in the plot.

identify pieces in the story where engagement was high or lacking.

identify points in the story where clarity is needed.

help develop characters (both oc & canon)

canon check pieces of information (for canonverse/compliant fics)

As a writer, I am looking for someone to help with:

identifying inconsistent tense.

identifying where engagement was high or lacking.

identifying points in the story where clarity is needed.

writing relationship development (platonic/romantic)

editing plot structure and fluidity.

writing descriptive settings.

identifying monotone or repetitive parts of the story.

Most importantly, I am looking for people who can approach my story as both a reader passionate about the fic and a writer/editor passionate about helping improve the story.

My projects are also multi-chapter (150,000) and usually part of a wider series (minimum of 3 parts) ; therefore, I am open to working on fic projects that are of equal length!

M-E Rated (For that reason, I prefer to work with 18+ betas)

Plot-heavy but with a well-written romantic subplot (requirement)

Specific tags/plot I enjoy/write: Time-travel, Fix-It, Canon-Divergence, What-Ifs.

Canonverse fics.

Both OC (has to have the potential of good development, though) and Canon Character-centric fics.

Found family, healing from trauma, redemption arcs.

Crossover/fusion fics (where the original fandom is set in the universe of another fandom)

Zombie-Apocolypse fics.

Dark twists on characters, plots, and the wider canonverse.

The type of fics that I steer clear from or don't enjoy reading/writing:

G-T Rated.

No romantic subplot at all (I am a romantic girly, sorry to say)

A Mary Sue OC/Reader-Insert or Mary Sue plot.

Reader-inserts.

Established Relationships (unless I can read the build up first)

Specific tags/plot: P*dophilia, Incest (outside of canon-typical), Mpreg, Omegaverse (only under special circumstances).

Modern AUs, Human AUs, No Power AUs.

No Comfort, No Happy Ending, Major Character (Permanent) Death.

Character bashing (I do read fics that bash, but I find it hard to beta for them only because I like to discuss characters objectively - but there are exceptions, so feel free to check)

Anything that attempts to glorify or justify racism, homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, xenophobia, ableism, sexism, bigotry, abuse, r*pe or anything even remotely similar.

(feel free to check with me tho, I am open to discussion of everything except the bottom dot point)

Because I believe beta reading to be an experience that should be enjoyable and insightful for both the reader and writer, I am open to :

Discussing any ships, character arcs, or plot points that my betas personally wanted to see in the show or are very passionate about (read: this does not mean I will change my entire story but that I am open to possibilities)

Analysing and critiquing any of the above media (read: NOT BASHING, but genuine analysis of how different media were handled to apply to our own form of writing)

Giving out and receiving fic, tv, movie and book recs to aid in inspiring each other during the course of our writing, but also to support our fellow writing community!

So many flashbacks so like every Alex phase he’s had is in this. It gets so much wilder and better. Shout out to whomever wrote it. So good wtf. Should be a movie please. Book one is complete but book two has one chapter left (I think)

hello! so: i'm fairly new to vtm and i wanna read through the books, but i've heard that not all of them are worth reading, so i was wondering if you have any recommendations? thank you so much!

Anonymous!!! This question made me so happy! I love recommending books! Welcome to Vampire! 💜

For starters, some caveats. First, anything touched by White Wolf Publishing is going to be some level of Awful. The best approach to World of Darkness, I find, is that of a vulture. Scavenge, pick the bones, find the delectable meat among the rot, and use that good stuff to fuel your imagination. VtM is horror, and all that horror entails. BUT the writers ALSO have a lot of unexamined bigotry they didn't put in the stories with intent. Yes, sometimes harmful content is there on purpose. A good example would be in the Coteries of New York visual novel. No matter which PC you pick, Baron Callihan says something tailored to insult them, to show off his gross character. So, to start, a general Content Warning for racism, sinophobia, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and misogyny. Geeeeeeennnneerrraaaalllllyyyy, the more modern the book the less this sort of bullshit appears.

My second caveat is way funnier. Uh, when I was in your position, starting my VtM books journey, I was equally overwhelmed by where to start. With some encouragement from fandom friends, I decided I would become the Beckett Fandom Elder. I focused all my reading on this feral nerd. Now I lounge in the decadence of pristine Beckett knowledge, such as he's Bride of Dracula.

Okay, enough caveats! I don't know how familiar you are with Vampire: the Masquerade to start with, so I'm going to assume you know nothing! Links to my reviews, when applicable.

The Victorian Age Trilogy by Philippe Boulle. This trilogy is a stellar introduction to the world of Vampire. Boulle does a fantastic job slowly revealing the world, its rules, quirks, and characters. The final novel doesn't quite stick the landing, but it's overall p fun. Highly, highly recommend.

The Book of Nod by Andrew Greenberg & Sam Chupp is an in-universe collection of myths centering Caine, the first vampire. Despite some hiccups, the writing is beautiful and presented like actual historical source, with footnotes, scholastic arguments, and introduction!

The Seduction of Goratrix and The Sword in the Tower by punk_pseudo are smutty romps that will make you smile and laugh! Gold-tier! Also that's TOTALLY the canon beginning of the Tremere Clan. :D :D :D

Vampire: the Masquerade - Corebook, Fifth Edition by Karim Muammar et al - after reading the above, I would read the Corebook. It's not a novel, but it will clarify any remaining questions about VtM.

Beckett's Jyhad Diary by Myranda Sarro et al. This is the Motherload for Beckett fans, and VtM fans. There's just SO MUCH. One podcast I listened to recommended the Diary as the first book to read, but I disagree. The Diary assumes you already know the basics and swims in the very deep end of lore. While reading, I had the White Wolf Wiki open beside me, because the writing would constantly reference something I didn't know.

Other books I heard were good but I haven't read myself:

Dark Ages Clan Novel Saga, Book 13: Tzimisce by Myranda Kalis centers on Sascha (then, Myca) Vykos and I've heard much goodness about it from @ryttu3k

Walk Among Us by Genevieve Gornichec, Cassandra Khaw, and Caitlin Starling. Audiobook only. Khaw is an incredible, award-winning writer so super looking forward to this.

Haunting Shadows: A Wraith 20th Anniversary Fiction Anthology is not Vampire, but my colleague Catherine Lundoff has a story in it and she's awesome :D Also she has a MILF lesbian werewolves series.

Now, those are a lot of recs. You can purchase them on DriveThruRPG or find them here. However, if you're looking at the first caveat and grimacing, if you read A Morbid Initiation and it is no, DITCH IT. a03 has mass troves of VtM fiction, and they're more in line with slick modern sensibilities like "hey maybe gender and racial minorities are people." Below are fanfiction that stand very well on their own, without serious prior knowledge of VtM. You might have to still look up some terms on the White Wolf Wiki, and again, these are very centered on Beckett.

Labyrinth of Blood and Silver Scales by AsunderWolf aka @lairofsentinel - meshes together Vampire and Mage into a twisty tale of gay time travel and very important handkerchiefs. Reminded me of the beauty in grief.

The City That Never Sleeps + Radio Silence by Martin Iceworth aka @robotslenderman - these center on New York City and the Nosferatu. The second one chronicles the NSA breaching SchreckNET, the vampire internet. Oops.

The Wolf and the Unicorn by alchemagician- a sweet adventure of Beckett and a Salubri woman who could step on me and I'd say thanks

The Creature Known as Emma Blake by DraculaBackwards aka @draculabackwards69 - rewrite of the Victorian Trilogy with ALL the good bits and ZERO of the bad bits. Unlike the above, this one's not all posted, but the first few chapters already have me swooning.

Other fanfic is Very Good, but they tend to require knowledge of what they're based on. For example, the every skyline was a kiss upon the lips by @ryttu3k needs to be stapled into the Diary. @draculabackwards69's wrote up some very important, missing plot beats of Anatole/Beckett and Beckett/Dracula. Retellings of Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines are popular. (Let's Play here. Antitribu Mod here. Final Nights Mod here.)

Wherefore Means Why by Sloane aka @meteormemoirs - a re-telling of Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines with an extra special Malkavian twist :D Not quite finished, but close.

A Traitorous Affair by @missn11. Truly, any of missn11's re-tellings are my comfort reads. :D

The Many Clans of Sebastian LaCroix Challenge has produced many awesome fic, such as Sweet Corruption into Enlightenment, Crown, and Diviner Bureaucrat.

Dracula Daily : May 16 , May 18

Warning for spoilers, my little cats and kittens.

So I have a couple of ponderings after this diary entry. For one thing, how on earth could Jonathan STAND to take a nap on an old dusty couch like that??? Like imagine the likelihood of bugs or spiders and shit in there omfg. Not to mention the VAMPIRES.

Also, how in the heckity does his diary fit in his pocket?? Are his pockets huge or is this a very small book he uses for a diary? Huh. He does mention writing in it in shorthand I believe, in addition to writing in shorthand when he writes Mina, so that could minimize how much space he might need? Maybe??? But that still seems curious to me.

Why do like none of the Dracula adaptations keep his facial hair? It seems like mustaches and bushy eyebrows are so easily minimized in film adaptations. I'm looking at you, book!Gandalf, who had "bushy eyebrows that poked out from under the brim of his hat" :p Unrealistic body expectations for men.

I find it interesting that the ladies hear Dracula say "this man belongs to me!" And instead of making that a more obvious 'sucking the blood' kinda scenario, they accuse him of not having loved. It's also a point that they don't call it "biting" or "sucking" or even "eating," but "KISSING."

This, added to Jonathan Harker's embarrassed admittance that once he saw the ladies he DID feel like he wanted them to kiss him, his inability to move, and the sort of almost-ecstasy he described when one of the ladies nears him for a kiss, all seem to suggest a strong theme of sexuality being irrevocably linked to the "kissing" of the vampires.

I know this seems rather obvious, but compared to when I was young and first read this, these things didn't stand out too much. Lol So I'm reveling in the themes and such.

Ω 6x01/6x02 - Wake Up/Escape from the Citadel [WATCH] - Finn and Jake need to get to the Citadel, and Prismo agrees to help. But the Lich beats them to it, and it seems he's got some plans of his own.

♥ 6x03- James II [WATCH] - An excess of James.

6x04- The Tower [WATCH] [alt]- Finn's missing his arm, so he decides to build a tower into space so he can punch his dad and steal HIS arm instead. Solid plan, right?

¿ 6x05 - Sad Face [WATCH] - A circus, and a clown.

♪ 6x06 - Breezy [WATCH] - Finn's flower isn't doing so well, and Finn himself isn't feeling anything, but his new bee friend Breezy wants to help. Stay tuned for spook (me, that's me) starting a petition to retitle this show 'what the hell did I just watch.'

6x13 - Thanks for the Crabapples, Giuseppe [WATCH] - Ice King and his fellow offbeats go on a wizard road trip to form their own secret society.

6x14- Princess Day [WATCH] - Breakfast Princess gets rude with LSP. Mistake! Time for her and Marceline to mess up the Breakfast Kingdom way bad.

6x15 - Nemesis [WATCH] - There's a great evil in the Candy Kingdom which must be stopped.

6x16 - Joshua and Margaret Investigations [WATCH] - Finn and Jake's parents fought monsters, too! Even when their mom was way super about-to-pop pregnant, apparently.

6x17 - Ghost Fly [WATCH] - Jake kills a fly, because flies are disgusting. But ghost flies seem to be worse. Oops?

6x18 - Everything's Jake [WATCH] - Bender searches inside himself and finds that Fry has been with him all along Jake goes on an inner journey, but like, literally. not really spiritually so much.

♥ 6x19 - Is That You? [WATCH] - Jake and Finn mourn Prismo, and then things get super bananas up in their dreamspace.

6x20 - Jake the Brick [WATCH] - Jake observes nature as he spends some time as just another brick in the wall.

6x21 - Dentist [WATCH] - Finn's tooth is in real bad shape, and he has to face facts: it is time for him to Go Dentist.

6x22 - The Cooler [WATCH] - There's a crisis in the Flame Kingdom, and FP makes the (objectively terrible??) decision to turn to PB for help.

6x23 - Pajama Wars [WATCH] - Sleepover in the Candy Kingdom! Nothing terrible is happening.

6x32 - Friends Forever [WATCH] - Ice King tries to make himself some new friends. It goes terribly.

6x33 - Jermaine [WATCH] - After Jake has a shared dream with Jermaine, the boys go to visit their brother, who’s still living in their childhood home.

6x34 - Chips and Ice Cream [WATCH] - Chips, chips chips chips. Ice cream ice cream. (A travelling performer passes his curse on to Jake. It doesn’t go well.)

6x35 - Graybles 1000+ [WATCH] - Graybles, again, some more. Apparently the Candy Kingdom is still around however much further in the future, and someone’s still putting up string lights at Marceline’s. So there’s that.

6x36 - Hoots [WATCH] - The Cosmic Owl gets distracted by a mystery lady’s pretty set of tailfeathers.

6x37 - Water Park Prank [WATCH] - Finn and Jake (and the Ice King) spend the day at the water park.

6x38 - You Forgot Your Floaties [WATCH] - Magic Man, up to his usual biz, but this time he’s getting a helping hand from Betty. No way this will go horribly wrong??

6x39 - Be Sweet [WATCH] - For some inexplicable reason, Tree Trunks thinks LSP is a good choice for a babysitter. Yikes.

6x40 - Orgalorg [WATCH] - Gunther and the Gunts throw a houseparty.

6x41 - On the Lam [WATCH] - Martin finds another group of adorable creatures to try to exploit. yay.
