imagine this: you're the baddest bitch in the Roman Republic. you have spent the past few decades fighting, fucking and planning to take control of the known world. you've killed millions of people. you became the fucking pontifex maximus and used some guy's idea to reinvent the calendar. you were the first roman to have a terrible vacation experience in the UK. you won a civil war. your best friend likes to commission naked statues of you and stand in front of them calling you a king at parties.
it's the 15th March 44 b.c.e and life is good. the people love you and you just became a dictator for life. you leave your mansion, ignoring your wife's pleas for you to stay (venus above that woman is in love with you) and shake off the soothsayer who keeps following you around and talking about your doom (spurinna is obsessed with you). you swagger into work, sit down, and are immediately stabbed by a bunch of your coworkers. you stagger around for a bit feeling sorry for yourself, before collapsing down dead at the statue of the guy that you had that civil war against. what a way to go.
#can you imagine?#all that work just to be stabbed by a bunch of wannabe revolutionaries#wearing togas#only for the guy after you to just use all of that power you created anyways?#kind of embarrassing ngl#ides of march#julius caesar#caesar#et tu brutus?#ancient rome#gaius julius caesar#gaius cassius longinus#marcus junius brutus#marcus antonius#spurinna#calpurnia#plutarch#life of caesar#classics#titus livius#tacitus#pompey the great

Out damned spot!
The results of my short lived career as a purpler. Long story short, don’t invite an archaeologist to a toga party if you don’t want historically accurate togas.

Rae do you know the difference between like a guy toga and a girl toga
Yes. Somewhat.
Men wore tunics (simple pinned shirts) with togas on top. Togas are layered and wrapped and that’s what you see all those cursed Augustus statues wearing. He wore like several at a time.
WOMEN were considered disgraceful if they wore togas. Instead they wore stolas. Women wore an under-tunic and the stola was a dress placed overtop the tunic sometimes with a draped accent called a PALLA used across the body, waist, or over the hair like a hood. I DONT OWN ANY OF THE FOLLOWING IMAGES
Here’s a woman in her clothes
we see the tunic (blue) the stola (white) and the palla (yellow)
here’s a man
we see his tunic (the dress-like item) and his toga is the tie-around piece he is wearing
As a bonus here’s an Augustus in his three billion layers from a museum that I technically wasn’t supposed to take a picture of but did anyway
IM STILL ON HELLA PAIN MEDICINE so i may be wrong please ask more questions from @historical-kitten she knows all this

Historical asks: 7, 10, 13
Thanks for the asks!
7. Historical dressing, uniform or costume?
I'm afraid I don't know that much about historical costumes unfortunately!
I'm going to be extremely predictable here and go with the Roman toga, maybe specifically the Toga praetexta. It may seem relatively simple but there were actually so many specific rules and social norms surrounding it. I find it fascinating that it was worn by both underage freeborn Romans and religious officers! Also, I just like the colour purple.
10. Pieces of art ( paintings, sculpures, lithographies, ect.) related to history you like most ( post an image of them)
I really like Eugène Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People! I know it's not about the first revolution, but I think it manages to perfectly capture the atmosphere. It just has this dynamic/epic vibe to it. There are depictions of death but also of hope.
Also, something about personifying abstract concepts (like Liberty and Marianne (symbol of the French Republic) as these larger than life female figures is just... *chefs kiss*
It's my laptop's lock screen for a reason!
13. Something random about some random historical person in a random era.
Lucile Desmoulins wrote a story called What I would do if I were in her place in which she imagines that if she were Marie Antoinette, she would orchestrate a ritual execution for herself and let herself be burned at a stake. You can read it here!
She sometimes seems like a sweet, gentle soul and sometimes she is straight up savage. That's probably part of the reason why I adore her so much.
#thanks for the ask!#oh this was so fun but also resulted in me procrastinating from working on my thesis#oh well#frev#history#french revolution#ancient rome#roman republic#1700s#send asks#lucile desmoulins#ask game#marie antoinette#historical fashion#toga#art#frev community#tagamemnon

Inspired by @just-late-roman-republic-things's toga alignment chart, I will look at images of things that have been called togas and rate them.
Up first, this specimen down below.
0/10 That is not a Party Toga Costume for Adults, that is a red scarf you've tucked into your belt. If this was what a toga was, Cato the Younger would NOT have gotten away with not wearing a tunica underneath.
Now this one below.
2/10 eBay is clearly very confused over if it's Greek or Roman, but it's certainly a step up over the previous one. This time, the scarf is not tucked into the belt (there isn't one) and is just hanging freely and honestly could kind of be a little like a toga if it wasn't scarf-shaped.
Now, this one below—oh hey that's me!
13-year-old me strikes again. Believe it or not, my French teacher will call my paenula a toga shortly after that picture was taken. I wonder what her idea of a toga was if a paenula with a hood sewn on counted.
1/10 it's literally a paenula.
Fun fact, before I sewed the hood on, it actually was toga-shaped, albeit too thick and too small.
For a second I was spooked out because I thought 13-year-old me had momentarily gained an extra ghostly finger in this picture. But no, the mirror was just dirty as fuck. Whoops!
For that one, 6/10 because it's the first one that actually resembles a toga! But I 100% draped it wrong and it was too small anyway. And so hot. I'm sweating just remembering how hot I felt taking that photo. It's not feasible to wear it if the temperature where you are is above 10°C.
But what if the temperature is below that?
I changed into a thin T-shirt and a short skirt, took out that exact paenula and wrapped it around my body, and stepped outside in the cold, Canadian night.
(it's actually obscenely hot out right now. Right now it's -6°C, which is around 20°F for you Amerians. That is extraordinarily hot for January. It's because of El Niño. Normally, at night, this time of the year, it's around -30°C, which is cold. That's like -22°F. And them usually there are a few days of at least -40°C, which interestingly is also -40°F. So -6°C right now is nothing. But it's cold enough to prove a point)
Once I was outside, I set a timer for five minutes on my phone.
Observations:
I probably should've put on footwear. My bare toes in the snow are not having a fun time right now.
My god, this thing stops wind like a brick wall. I feel wind on the exposed parts of my body and nothing on the covered parts.
My right arm is starting to get a little chilly. It's completely exposed.
My toesies...
Hmmm I've reached the half-way point and I don't really feel cold. Of course, the exposed parts of my body are a bit cold and my feet are quite numb, but the covered parts of my body are starting to get really toasty. Like, my left shoulder is actually starting to get quite hot.
One minute remaining and I'm fine. The night is peaceful and still, and quiet. The stars are bright tonight. Life is quite beautiful.
Oh. The time has finished!
This paenula-turned-toga is so warm that it actually is pretty appropriate to wear in -6°C. If I was wearing pants and a long sleeved shirt and most importantly shoes, I would've been quite comfortable outside. If the toga were longer, I could've covered more parts of my body, and that would've made it warmer too.
I don't know what I was trying to prove in this experiment but 10/10 would try again. Too bad I can't give this to Octavian because he wouldn't have to wear four tunics if he had this. It's a bit small as a toga but it's warm nevertheless. I forgot which fabric it was but it was the cheapest thick one.
I want to judge more "togas" later but now I'm tired and my feet need a warm bath. I hope you guys enjoyed!

I ALMOST did it. I almost took the lazy modern way and just downloaded an AI art app and told it what I wanted. But I won't do it. Making a difference and saving art means not being lazy or cheap.
So with that said I know theres a lot of art blogs I follow and who follow me and all that good stuff so if anyone thinks they would be up for the challenge of illustrating some historical figures for me I'd be very happy to see some examples of your art style and if it's what I'm looking for and come to an agreement on commissions and stuff.
Namely I need Pompeius Magnus in the style of a Lee Pace looking dude... So give me Lee Pace with gingery curls in a toga or Roman general's uniform basically

Ancient Roman Toga
The ancient Roman toga is often considered the item of traditional Roman clothing. The toga was made of wool. It could have different cuts and worn in different ways.
