1. How many works of art have you made this year?

Oh wow! I have no idea, I'm gonna go count. Okay so there was approx 160 drawings in the burger book! And approx 70 in my digital art folder from this year! And approx 30 posca pieces! So approximately 260!!! (Not including any study doodles, sticky-note doodles, phonecall doodles, etc). Not too shabby I'd say!😄

10. What inspired/motivated you this year?

Oh boy, this is a BIG question for me this year!Honestly this time last year I was pinnacle depression. Was half a year away from a degree but was DEEP down the spiral. Couldn't do any work, but also couldn't allow myself to enjoy anything. Came to the realisation that something had to change, otherwise nothing would change. It started out as forcing myself to drawing something, anything, make a mark on the paper, any old mark. And with that, it got easier. Bit by bit. Day by day. Having a set activity at some point during the day, then got everything else wanting to shift and move into place. I started to find myself wanting to work, so I could, play? If that makes sense? My reward system started healing. I went from wanting to feel anything to wanting to feel accomplishment. Not necessarily from uni work, because that was a Bigger Task™, so drawing gave me a smaller sense of it, a small feeling of accomplishment everyday! And that is when I started to feel drive/motivation again. It's been a year and now all my uni work is done! It's gonna be marked in the spring and hopefully I graduate in the summer! I'm no longer stuck between not being able to work OR play. And it all started by forcing myself to draw a silly lil scribble every day!😄

16. What piece was the quickest to create?

Hmm, I don't really look at my timelapses to know how long each (digital) drawing takes. I did a Jimmy Pesto At/Jr sketch a few days ago I did in a few minutes that I was really shook about lmao. But other than that the only thing I can think that might count is this load of 10-sec exercises I did when I first started drawing regularly!

17. What piece took the longest to create?

Hahah you know it actually might be a Fresh Meat!au piece. I'm gonna say the FM!restaurant gif as it was my first time drawing the restaurant exterior and my first time animating on CSP, so lots of trial and error on that piece!

23. What WIP(s) are you taking into next year with you?

Ideally none! I'm hoping to get them done as I'd rather go into the new year with fresh ideas ready to be created! I have a list compiled of drawings that vaguely spark joy so I'm excited to see what I can do with them! :D

I HAD to draw the ShortCake Project for this. I just had to. Anyway this took me a hella long time lmao. Tried to replicate Iz's hair shine, I'll decide if I like it in a few weeks.

And here it is! I'm putting the pen down, and leaving it alone! Prototype 12! Originally, it was going to be my backup character for my partner's VTM chronicle, the first artificial vampire! But now, it has become a character all of its own! I would've posted the timelapse for this piece, but it was 13 minutes long and wouldn't even export!

I'm thinking about making a comic, starring Prototype 12 and its ghost roommate, Ghost! Yet another project to distract my many other projects!

Because I don't wanna throw out the VTM character I've made, perhaps you'd like to see it! It has a Consentualist predator type. These were the advantages and flaws that gave birth to its character!

jesus fucking christ I was like "oh I'll cut together a timelapse from the 13 canvases this project required that'll be fun, procreate records by default after all :)"

wanna know how long the time lapses from just tidying the kirbs is? yknow, the way sped up version? 2 1/2 hours. a 2 1/2 hour speed draw. that's not even counting the 11 other canvases (although they're each only like a minute or so all-told). jesus fucking christ.

(fortunately procreate also has a 30-second timelapse available by default. so maybe using those ones instead.)

It was 9:51:47 PM, which meant Lance had exactly 8 minutes and 13 seconds before he could officially lock the doors. Unfortunately, someone else was having just as long a night as he was.

Lance slumped over the counter, staring ahead at the sugary rainbow of check out candy neatly stacked and ordered. Within an hour of opening tomorrow they were sure to be a mess, but he was kind of proud of how hard he’d worked to make them look nice. It was one of the few things he actually got joy out of in this miserable job, miserable life really.

It was 9:14:47 PM, which meant Lance had exactly 8 minutes and 13 seconds before he could officially lock the doors. Everything was accounted for, every other register closed out, everything cleaned up, but he couldn’t leave until exactly 10 PM. Damn corporate policy. Nobody was even going to come in the damn store. He’d worked closing for the past 4 days and hardly anybody ever came in after 9:45. That might have something to do with Keith shutting off the lights that spelled out the store name at that time, but still. Finally, Lance caved. Fuck it. It was only a minute or two until 10, and it’s not like Shiro was going to write him up for that, he was a pretty chill manager.

Suddenly the door chimed, signaling somebody entering the store.

Lance, figuring it was pretty much 10 PM anyways said “Sorry, we’re closed-”

“No you’re not, it’s 9:54.” Snapped a voice.

Internally, Lance groaned, not even bothering to look up. He didn’t have the patience to deal with any more bullshit today. He already had that one lady try to cuss him out when she accidentally put the card reader in Spanish and couldn’t figure out how to change it back. She said that it was a damn shame that now she couldn’t even get groceries without ‘witnessing the assault of American culture by the gangs and rapists from Mexico’ and told him Trump was going to deport his whole family. He didn’t have the heart to tell her he was Cuban.

Lance flipped his light back on and rebooted up his register, grumbling the entire time. He couldn’t even punish her by faking a register problem or faking a need to call management. He wanted to go home. He’d just have to rely on karma to get this entitled customer in line.

To his surprise, he heard footsteps rounding into his lane and put something on his counter by 9:57. As he thoughtlessly reached for the big ass chocolate bar this cretin was purchasing, he heard a sniffle. It was faint, and if the muzak that usually played hadn’t been shut off a few minutes ago he surely would have missed it. At first Lance waved it off as allergies as he passed the first item over the scanner, but then on a whim he actually looked up.

Her eyes were red and puffy, a tear slipping down her reddened face. He froze, unsure what to do. He was trained to handle all sorts of situations like active shooter, robberies, fake IDs, suspected human traffiking, and mislabeled merchandise, but Lance had never been through a course on how to comfort a crying customer.

“Uh,” Lance said, setting down the item in a bag, “are you okay?”

She wiped her eyes and shot him a glare. It would’ve been petrifying if it wasn’t for the fact more tears were spilling out already. Realizing what she was doing wasn’t working she looked away.

“I’m fi-ine.” She huffed out, the declaration punctuated by another sniffle.

“You’re crying in a grocery store at 10 PM,” Lance pointed out bluntly, “I think that’s like, the opposite of fine.”

“Well,” she tried wiping her eyes again, and this time Lance noticed little mascara smudges and a hint of a shimmery powder on her lids, “it’s closing and you probably have a girlfriend to get home to.”

It was almost like she was just throwing the words haphazardly at Lance. There was an edge of bitterness, but for the most part it was just sadness and maybe a hint of jealousy behind it. He took another look at her appearance. She was wearing sort of nice clothes, nothing formal or fancy, but really cute he had to admit. It was nice shorts with an off the shoulder top. Her hair was in soft ringlets, probably looser now than they’d been earlier, so clearly there was some effort put into it. All that combined with the makeup pointed at the strong possibility that she’d just been burned by Cupid.

Lance snorted, starting to ring her up. “Nah, I’ve been single for nearly a year now. I found out my last girlfriend of 3 years had been cheating on me literally the day I was going to propose.”

He flushed, realizing that he didn’t know why he’d just told her that. It wasn’t any of her business, and in fact Lance had told 3 people the truth about why he and Nyma weren’t together anymore. Maybe he just felt bad for her.

“Oh shoot,” the girl mumbled, “I’m sorry, that sucks.”

“Yeah, but don’t feel too bad for me,” Lance added dully, “I’d caught her cheating the month before but she promised it was a mistake and that she was so sorry. So I forgave her. It really shouldn’t have been a surprise when I walked into our bedroom and saw her being fucked by two guys at once. I should’ve known she didn’t just stop, I was the ultimate cuck.”

The customer cringed, but chuckled a bit. “Oh god, and I thought I was having it bad.”

“Well, whatever you’re going through,” he sighed, finalizing the sale with the cash she gave him, “I’m sure it’s not as bad as getting cucked.”

“Probably not,” she mumbled, accepting her change, “I just got stood up by guy who was dared to ask me out as part of his fraternity rush.”

Lance shut off his register as the lights in the back of the store went out. “Wait, you knew he was a frat boy and you still accepted?”

“He was my bio partner,” she explained, following him as he made his way over to the time clock, “and I didn’t know he was joining a frat. It’s not like he mentioned it to me and I don’t talk to people on campus who are part of that crowd, so I just didn’t know.”

You didn’t look this guy up on social media or anything?” Lance asked, raising an eyebrow. The pair made their way towards the exit. “That’s rule one of dating in college.”

She folded her arms over her chest. “I don’t really know those rules. It’s not like anyone ever told me about them.”

“Okay, fair,” Lance said, leading them over to a park bench so they could talk some more, “so this guy asked you out and you said yes.”

“I guess- I mean, yeah.” The girl sat down next to him, jiggling her foot, “he’s always been super sweet, talks to me in the hallways, and we would text a lot too. He’d ask for pictures of my dog like every day.”

“Ah, animal loving,” Lance whistled, “that’s how they get ya.”

She glowered at him, but continued anyways. “I agreed to meet him for a milkshake, and I waited 3 hours but he never showed up. Finally one of my friends texted me saying there was a timelapse of me sitting at the diner barstool for the first two hours taken from a security camera up on social media. I guess one of the fraternity members works there…”

Her bottom lip trembled and Lance’s heart really hurt for her. “Wow, that’s just… wow.”

“Yeah,” she let out a shuddery breath.

They sat there in silence for a bit, the cool night breeze playing with her curls. He couldn’t help but steal glances at her every now and then. He felt really, really bad for her. He’d been the victim of some cruel pranks in the past too, and he knew what it was like for someone to just toy with your feelings. He bit his lip, hesitant to offer this. Was he even ready?

“Hey,” Lance said, after a few moments, “do you still wanna get that milkshake?”

She looked up at him and he could see she’d been crying again.

“Only if you want to,” he added hastily, feeling his face heat up, “and it can just be as a friend thing, or well, not a friend thing, I’m just your cashier but like, hey, I don’t want this asshole to ruin your night, you know?”

She gave him a small smile. “Actually, I think I’d like that.” She got to her feet, offering her hand. “I’m Pidge, by the way.”

“Lance,” he grinned, accepting her handshake before getting to his own feet. “Let’s go bring all the boys to the yard.”

Using only trains, buses and boats, I travelled right across Europe, to the magnificent Altai Mountains in Russia and along the famous Trans-Mongolian Railway, through the vast plains of Siberia, along the crystal-clear waters of Lake Baikal, through the endless steppes and the Gobi Desert of Mongolia, along the impressive Great Wall of China, and finally to the unique karst landscapes of southern China... and all the way back again. Visiting 8 countries in total and spending approximately 335 hours on trains, this truly was the adventure of a lifetime, an epic journey I will never forget and for which I'll be forever grateful.

It was not easy to squeeze more than three hours of video and timelapse footage of an almost three-month trip into an 'aftermovie' of less than 7 minutes, but I hope this short film makes you dream away for a short while, and wonder about the incredible beauty of our world I got to witness.

Edit Day One - 4th May

Today we had a meeting with John and Peter and discussed the assembly edit of our film. The issue that we were having was that the whole thing amounted to 13 minutes long, nearly three times the length of the assignment specification. We were really struggling with how to cut it down, as every scene included seemed so crucial to the plot and the narrative. This was where showing the film to a fresh set of eyes was very useful, as John and Peter were able to question sections of the film and their relevance, and we were able to gain a more objective opinion. We left this meeting and went to the Edit Room, in which we had booked out computers (having completed risk assessments), and began the task of cutting it down.

It became clear through our discussions with John and Peter that actually, although useful to the narrative of a longer film, quite a few of our scenes were superfluous to the plot - they enhanced it and created a more developed narrative but actually without them the film still made sense and had a clear three-act structure. This meant that we could cut large sections of the film including the initial diary scene and also the final fight and street scene. Our film now began and ended in totally different places to what we had ever imagined, but still worked, which was pleasant surprise. There was also a point made that the post interception scene, whilst functioning as another example of Ryan's paranoia and controlling nature, lacked sufficient context to be deemed vital to the film, as we don't see the post arriving, nor do we necessarily see Beth going to get it. This was therefore another cut that could be made.

As a crew member it was difficult to see these cuts being made, as we all worked so hard to obtain them however it was clear when we began cutting and reviewing that they were able to be gotten rid of, and emphasised the part of the editor's role of needing to not be attached to footage you take, for it may always be discarded to the cutting room floor.

After these cuts the film was now at around 7 minutes, so we were making progress. The next area we turned to was the montage scene, comprised of several shots that had all been sped up to create a timelapse effect. Upon review, we considered that these shots actually didn't really need to be sped up and could instead be a quick succession of jump cuts. We also now had the score for the film, composed by Jack Marc Williams, a composer we sourced. The score he composed was perfect for the emotions of the scenes, and the one for the montage scene was very rhythmic, having a constant clock ticking and layers of rhythm overlapping. We timed the jump cuts to the beat of the song, speeding up as the sequence progressed.

Adding in the soundtrack to the other scenes allowed us to make more time-saving edits, fitting the sequences to the sound track's duration and pace. As well as music we also noticed that some scenes that were lacking music or atmospheric noise felt quite jarring to cut to. In some cases this could be remedied by taking the audio track from other scenes and putting it in, getting general ambience sound from the room in which the scene was shot in, even if it was just audible fuzziness it still worked better as background noise than pure silence. For the climactic paper ripping scene we really wanted to convey the intensity of the overwhelm that Beth feels, and how this affects all of her senses. As well as having the soundtrack Jack made we also pulled white noise and tinnitus clips off of YouTube and layered them in, varying their volume levels. We also used the audio of Marisa breathing and the audio track we had from a scene that we cut, in which groups of people were outside laughing and talking, and layered it in faintly, so as to further emphasise how life is and has been continuing as normal outside whilst Beth has been trapped inside. These different sounds and audio clips, when placed on top of each other with varying volume levels, and paired with the soundtrack, worked to create a sort of wall of sound that perfectly matched the intensity of the scene.

With knowledge that we needed time for credits we went about scrutinising each scene and cutting what we could - this meant unnecessary lines, extra shots, etc. We had to get pretty brutal with what we were keeping in! We were all quite reassured by the knowledge that we are going to have a longer edit that we may submit to festivals, and that this will be able to contain more of the shots and scenes that we didn't want to cut but had to.

After a good 6 hours of scrutinising and editing we were finally able to get the film down to exactly 5 minutes and 30 seconds, including credits, which was a huge relief. Now what we need to do is colour grade the film and add any final touches, in preparation for a feedback meeting with John and Peter on Thursday.

Guess who just binged the entire first season of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" in one evening/night/early morning and is now watching the second? That's right, it's me. (Sounds a lot like the opening line of a sitcom doesn't it?) Heard a lot about the show and had seen some clips from it, and of late thanks to recommendations of @tiny.sharma10, @mangopenciler2.0 and @mahartified I started watching it. I'm enjoying the show, appreciate the way the comedy comes from the characters but the detective/ police work depicted is taken relatively seriously. I drew Andy Samberg as Jake Peralta from the show. The drawing was done with @pentelofamerica Graphgear 1000 0.5mm mechanical pencil with 4B lead on A6 sketchbook. I'm also posting the drawing I did based on the teaser from "Zack Snyder's Justice League". I drew Superman in the black suit. A trailer is expected to drop at 10:44 PM India Time today and I am really looking forward to seeing it. Very glad that we are finally going to see Zack Snyder's vision for the Justice League after more than 3 years. The footage we've seen so far, makes it look like a completely different movie from what we saw (it apparently is — some reports say that only 30 minutes of what we saw in 2017 was what Snyder filmed, the rest was all Joss Whedon's reshoots, hence referred to as "Josstice League"). Seems very epic. Apparently they have some plan for the release in India. Let's see. The drawing itself isn't anything special, in fact it doesn't even look like the person it's supposed to be. But it was an experiment, I was attempting to draw with both hands simultaneously, and in 5 minutes for @rasa_by_sreelikhi's challenge. Swipe for the timelapse video. The supermassive black hole at the heart of the Milky Way, Sagittarius A*, is usually relatively quiet. It’s not an active nucleus, spewing light and heat into the space around it; most of the time, the black hole’s activity is low key, with minimal fluctuations in its brightness.

Most of the time. Recently, astronomers caught it going absolutely bananas, suddenly growing 75 times brighter before subsiding back to normal levels. That’s the brightest we’ve ever seen Sgr A* in near-infrared wavelengths.

“I was pretty surprised at first and then very excited,” astronomer Tuan Do of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) told ScienceAlert.

“The black hole was so bright I at first mistook it for the star S0-2, because I had never seen Sgr A* that bright. Over the next few frames, though, it was clear the source was variable and had to be the black hole. I knew almost right away there was probably something interesting going on with the black hole.”

But what? That’s what astronomers are on a mission to find out. We first reported on this story in mid August, and the results have now been published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. As of now, we still don’t know what caused the super bright flare.

“We have never seen anything like this in the 24 years we have studied the supermassive black hole,” said Andrea Ghez, UCLA professor of physics and astronomy and a co-senior author of the research.

“It’s usually a pretty quiet, wimpy black hole on a diet. We don’t know what is driving this big feast.”

Do and his team took observations of the galactic centre using the WM Keck Observatory in Hawaii over four nights earlier this year. The strange brightening was observed on May 13, and the team managed to capture it in a timelapse, two hours condensed down to a few seconds.

That brightly glowing dot right at the beginning of the video is the dust and gas swirling around Sgr A*. Black holes themselves don’t emit any radiation that can be detected by our current instruments, but the stuff nearby does when the black hole’s gravitational forces generate immense friction, in turn producing radiation.

When we view that radiation with a telescope using the infrared range, it translates as brightness. Normally, the brightness of Sgr A* flickers a bit like a candle, varying from minutes to hours. But when the surroundings of a black hole flare that brightly, it’s a sign something may have gotten close enough to be grabbed by its gravity.

The first frame – taken right at the beginning of the observation – is the brightest, which means Sgr A* could have been even brighter before they started observing, Do said. But no one was aware that anything was drawing close enough to be swallowed by the black hole.

The team is busily gathering data to try and narrow it down, but there are two immediate possibilities. One is G2, an object thought to be a gas cloud that approached within 36 light-hours of Sgr A* in 2014. If it was a gas cloud, this proximity should have torn it to shreds, and parts of it devoured by the black hole – yet nothing happened.

The flyby was later called a “cosmic fizzle“, but the researchers believe the black hole’s May fireworks show may have been a delayed reaction.

But – have a look at the timelapse again. See that bright dot at around 11 o’clock from the black hole? That’s S0-2, a star on a long, looping, 16-year elliptical orbit around Sgr A*. Last year, it made its closest approach, coming within 17 light-hours of the black hole.

“One of the possibilities,” Do told ScienceAlert, “is that the star S0-2, when it passed close to the black hole last year, changed the way gas flows into the black hole, and so more gas is falling on it, leading it to become more variable.”

The only way to find out is having more data. They are currently being collected, across a larger range of wavelengths. More observations will take place over the coming weeks with the ground-based Keck Observatory before the galactic centre is no longer visible at night from Earth.

But many other telescopes – including Spitzer, Chandra, Swift and ALMA – were observing the galactic centre over the last few months, too. Their data could reveal different aspects of the physics of the change in brightness, and help us understand what Sgr A* is up to.

“I’m eagerly awaiting their results,” Do said.

The paper has been published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
