This is my first post to the group. I did this in July 2023 at Lake Monroe, Sanford, FL. It reminds me of the three witches of Macbeth. "When shall we three meet again? In thunder, lightning, or in rain?"
[Karen Kimmons Johnson]

“Psychologists usually try to help people use insight and understanding to manage their behaviour. However, neuroscience research shows that very few psychological problems are the result of defects in understanding; most originate in pressures from deeper regions in the brain that drive our perception and attention. When the alarm bell of the emotional brain keeps signaling that you are in danger, no amount of insight will silence it.”
— Bessel van der Kolk, The Body Keeps the Score

is it impolite to ask how the three of you ended up together? how did you get where you are?
Hecate: I do wonder if they remember after all. I have never bothered to ask.

First Witch: When shall we three meet again? In thunder, lightning, or in rain?
Second Witch: When the hurly-burly's done, When the battle's lost and won.
Third Witch: That will be ere the set of sun.
First Witch: Where the place?
Second Witch: Upon the heath.
Third Witch: There to meet with Macbeth.

So many people forget that the Sandman comics started out as a revival and an homage to both obscure DC comics and abandoned superheroes, as well as the world of the DC Comics horror.
Cain and Abel, with their gargoyles and Houses? Horror hosts of DC Comics. Lucien? Horror host of DC. Even Destiny of the Endless started out as a DC horror host.
(This is also why the very first arc of the Sandman can feel a bit weird and strange to people entirely unaware of the DC Universe, because it heavily relies on bringing the character of Dream as a bridge between many different facets of the old DC world ; and the Dreaming being a sort of internal explanation for the existence of all these horror anthologies - they literaly come from the land of nightmares...)
Hey Mr.Gaiman, I came across this panel from an issue of Sandman and I have to ask, given your history and friendship with Terry, are these three based off of his witches from his Discworld series?
No, they were old DC Comics characters I grabbed and pulled into my story. They were first seen in 1969.
